How to save on travel with a Costco credit card

If you’re a regular Costco shopper, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi can make a lot of sense for your wallet. With savings both at the wholesale club and on additional everyday spending categories, it has a lot of savings potential.

Before you plan your next vacation, you should also consider its potential value as a travel credit card . Specifically, as a way to save more money when you book a trip through Costco Travel.

Whether you’re a Costco member already or considering joining the club, here’s what to know about saving on your next Costco Travel booking with a Costco credit card.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi details

Annual fee: $0 (though you must be a Costco member, which costs $60-$120 annually)

Welcome offer: N/A

4% cash back on eligible gas and electric vehicle charging purchases (up to the first $7,000 spent each year, then 1%)

3% cash back at restaurants

3% cash back on eligible travel purchases (including Costco Travel)

2% cash back on all other Costco and Costco.com purchases

1% back on everything else

More details: This card offers few added benefits beyond the cash rewards it offers. You’ll receive your cash-back rewards once per year as a rewards certificate, which you can redeem only at U.S. Costco warehouses in a single transaction.

Costco Travel details

Costco Travel is a service Costco members can use to book hotels, rental cars, cruises, and whole vacation packages at discounted rates. You can even find theme park tickets (including Disneyland and Walt Disney World ) and all-inclusive resort packages.

While you must be a Costco member to use Costco Travel, there’s no option to book your trip in-store at a warehouse. You can either search travel options through the online Costco Travel portal or speak with an expert by phone at 1-866-921-7925.

If you have a Costco Executive membership (the $120/year tier), Costco Travel purchases also count toward your 2% annual rewards. You’ll earn 2% rewards on the bulk of your travel costs, though taxes, fees, surcharges, and some other parts of the transaction may not be included.

When you book through Costco Travel, your package often comes with additional credits or other benefits to add even more value to your vacation. You may also earn Digital Costco Shop Cards with your travel purchase. These are essentially Costco gift cards that you can use on future Costco spending with Costco Travel, on Costco.com, or at Costco warehouses.

When you search for deals through the Costco Travel site, the itinerary overviews will typically indicate whether the trip comes with a Digital Costco Shop Card (along with info about daily resort credits and other savings). These gift cards can offer you hundreds of dollars in value back on your vacation to put toward future everyday spending with Costco.

Travel benefits of the Costco Anywhere Visa

When you use your Costco Anywhere Visa to book a trip through Costco Travel, you’ll get 3% cash back on the purchase. These 3% rewards are in addition to the 2% you’ll earn as an Executive Member and any potential Digital Costco Shop Cards.

Plus, your Costco Anywhere Visa includes a few travel protections that can help keep you covered on your trip. These include travel accident insurance, car rental insurance, travel and emergency assistance, and more. Make sure you read your card’s terms to see what your exact protections are.

Finally, this card has no foreign transaction fees — so you can use your Costco card and earn more rewards when traveling abroad without taking on any extra charges.

How much can you save on travel with the Costco Anywhere Visa?

With multiple ways to earn rewards, it’s possible to score a lot of potential savings on your Costco Travel booking.

Let’s take, for example, a family of four planning a vacation to an all-inclusive family resort in Cancun during the fall. They’ll leave from Dallas and want to book a room at the Hyatt Ziva Cancun from Oct. 6-11.

If they were to book this vacation through Costco Travel today — the all-inclusive resort, flights for four, and transportation to and from the airport — the cost would total $5,748.58. For comparison, we also looked up the price to book the same trip directly through the airline and hotel — today, that cost is about $5,700.

While, on the surface, the two bookings are almost exactly the same price, that doesn’t account for the extra Costco rewards.

Here’s the savings breakdown when we account for the Costco Travel rewards. The below amounts assume all costs are eligible for rewards and that our family has an Executive membership.

3% cash back with the Costco Anywhere card: $172.46

2% back with Executive membership: $114.97

Digital Costco Shop Card included with booking: $321

Total: $608.43

Of course, you can also save when you book directly with the airline and hotel if you’re a member of their loyalty programs. You could also use another travel credit card with rewards for travel bookings.

But there is a ton of value in the multiple ways to earn and save through Costco — if you’re already a regular Costco shopper and will get the full value of your rewards. In this case, you could essentially reduce your cost from $5,748.58 to $5,140.15, with those savings going toward your future Costco spending.

Note: These totals are just examples; the actual amount you’ll owe will change depending on when you’re looking to book and your specific travel details, as well as adding on fees and taxes not included here

More travel cards to consider

If you’re not sure a Costco credit card is the best option for your travel savings, there are plenty of great travel rewards credit cards available today with a range of rewards programs , categories, and added benefits. Here are some of our top picks:

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Why we like it: For a $95 annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Preferred offers travel rewards and great redemptions. After you’re approved you can earn 75,000 bonus points when you spend $4,000 within the first three months. Ongoing rewards include 3x points on dining, online grocery purchases, and select streaming services, and 1x points on all non-bonus category spending. You’ll also get an annual $50 statement credit each account year for hotel purchases through Chase Travel; travel you purchase through Chase Travel (excluding spending that qualifies for the hotel credit) earns 5x points and all other travel spending earns 2x points.

When you’re ready to redeem your Chase Sapphire Preferred points, you can get a 25% boost when you redeem for travel through Chase. That means that every point is worth 1.25 cents toward travel when booking through the issuer's portal. For example, you can get more than $900 in value with the 75,000-point welcome offer. You’ll also get an annual points bonus on your account anniversary equal to 10% of your total purchases over the year prior.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Why we like it: Solid travel rewards earnings don’t get more straightforward than the Capital One Venture . This card has a $95 annual fee and a welcome offer worth 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 within the first three months. For rewards, you’ll earn 5x miles when you book hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel and 2x miles on every other purchase.

To redeem your miles for travel, you’ll have the option to book a trip through Capital One Travel or to put the rewards value toward a travel purchase on your card statement. The Venture Card also offers a credit up to $100 toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry and a $50 experience credit when you book a hotel stay through Capital One Travel’s Lifestyle Collection.

American Express® Gold Card

Why we like it: The American Express Gold Card is another great travel option for earning rewards today to use on future travel. It carries a $250 annual fee ( see rates and fees ) but offers 4x points at restaurants, 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 spent per year, then 1%), 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, and 1x points on all other purchases. You can also earn 60,000 bonus points when you spend $6,000 within the first six months.

Despite the high annual fee, there is plenty of opportunity to get the value back through annual credits. When you add your Amex Gold card to your Uber account, you can get up to $120 annually ($10 per month) in Uber Cash — and get up to $120 ($10 per month; with enrollment) in dining statement credits for eligible spending at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar and select Shake Shack locations.

No annual fee

Editor’s Note: On March 31, 2016, Costco will stop partnering with American Express and TrueEarnings® Card from Costco and American Express will be discontinued. Citi, Costco's new partner, will send  TrueEarnings® Card from Costco and American Express  cardholders a new Visa card co-branded by Costco as a replacement.

The TrueEarnings® Card from Costco and American Express  is a versatile card: it earns you 3% on gas, 2% on restaurants and travel and 1% elsewhere. It’s true that, for each of those categories, you can find slightly stronger rewards rates with some other cards – we discuss some below – but we still recommend this one because this card’s rewards are so well-rounded. Plus, there’s a $0 Annual Fee with your paid Costco membership .

For gas, the TrueEarnings® Card from Costco and American Express  is a strong card for most Costco members. The wholesaler’s gas happens to be among the cheapest options out there; you also happen to need an American Express to pay with credit anywhere on Costco premises, and this card is a fine choice.

The gas-rewards cap isn’t ideal – only your first $4,000 in annual spending is eligible for that full 3% – but for most it won’t be a problem. To hit that cap, you’d have to spend about $76 on gas a week, but the average American spends just $51.

Travel benefits are decent, too. You’ll earn that 2% specifically on airfare, hotel rooms, car rentals, cruise lines, travel agencies, tour operators and purchases from Costco Travel – a broad swath of items.

Rewards Redemption

You can redeem only at the end of each year, when Costco mails you a coupon, can you redeem all that cash back.

Your rewards expire, too, so set your calendars: on August 31 every year, your annual rewards coupon will expire. Before then, you have to redeem for Costco merchandise. You can redeem for cash, too, but you’ll have to visit your local Costco to do it.

Most rewards-earning credit cards offer an opportunity to earn a welcome bonus during the months immediately following card approval.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card has a generous welcome bonus offer after meeting minimum spending requirements within the first 3 months after card approval. Depending on your redemption choice, which we’ll talk about shortly, the bonus could be worth more than $1,000 when redeemed for travel .

The Costco Anywhere card does not offer a welcome bonus.

Woman paying at restaurant cafe dining out

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns flexible Ultimate Rewards points while the Costco Anywhere card earns cash-back. We’ll discuss how your rewards can be used, but first, let’s look at how rewards are earned on each of our featured cards.

While the number of rewards you earn will depend on your spending mix, let’s look at a simple spending scenario (including monthly shopping at Costco) to illustrate the earning differences between the 2 cards:

  • $300 per month at Costco ($3,600 per year)
  • $200 per month on gas ($2,400 per year)
  • $100 per month on dining ($1,200 per year)
  • Average $200 per month on travel ($2,400 per year using the Chase travel portal for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and qualifying travel purchases on the Costco Anywhere card)

If using the Chase Sapphire Preferred card , the yearly earnings would be:

  • 1x points on $3,600 at Costco = 3,600 points
  • 1x points on $2,400 on gas = 2,400 points
  • 3x points on $1,200 on dining = 3,600 points
  • 5x points on $2,400 on travel = 12,000 points
  • Total: 21,600 Ultimate Rewards points

Let’s add up the yearly earnings if using the Costco Anywhere card :

  • 2% cash-back x $3,600 at Costco = $72
  • 4% cash-back x $2,400 on gas = $56
  • 3% cash-back x $1,200 on dining = $36
  • 3% cash-back x $2,400 on travel = $72
  • Total: $236 in cash-back

If you spend a lot at Costco, on gas, and eligible travel, you may fare better with the Costco Anywhere card when it comes to earnings. However, earnings are just one factor in determining a card’s value. Let’s continue and look at the value of those earnings at redemption time for each of our featured cards.

Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns the most on travel purchased via the Chase travel portal, dining, online grocery stores, and select streaming services. The Costco Anywhere card’s biggest earning categories are gas stations, select travel, and dining. The mix of your actual spending will determine which card delivers the most total earnings.

While rewards earnings are important, the real value you’ll get from them is revealed at redemption time . Here are the options for redeeming your rewards for both of our featured cards:

Let’s refer back to our earlier spending scenario. Spending on the Costco Anywhere card yielded $236 cash-back and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card yielded 21,600 Ultimate Rewards points . If the Ultimate Rewards points were redeemed for travel via the Chase travel portal, the value would be $270 (1.25 cents per point).

However, by our valuations of Chase points at 2 cents per point, those points are actually worth $432 when you transfer Ultimate Rewards points to travel partners. With travel partners, you have the potential to receive greater value than cash-back or travel portal redemptions.

However, if you don’t spend a lot on travel and don’t prefer to redeem your rewards for travel, you may find cash-back rewards a better fit for you.

Bottom Line: Your spending mix, redemption preferences, and card benefits will determine which card is a better fit for your circumstances. If you prefer to redeem your rewards for travel, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card can deliver greater value.

Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Preferred card has a broader collection of travel and shopping benefits and protections. But the Costco Anywhere card does offer primary car rental insurance outside of the U.S. and shopping protections that include purchase protection.

Annual fees and adding additional users to your card account can add to the cost of being a cardholder.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card charges an annual fee of $95  while the Costco Anywhere card does not charge an annual fee . However, you must be a Costco member to be approved for the Costco Anywhere card. The current price of membership is $60 per year for a Gold Star membership and $120 for a Gold Star Executive membership.

While the Chase Sapphire Preferred card charges an annual fee, its generous welcome bonus can make up for the first year’s annual fee. After receiving the welcome bonus, travelers who use the Chase travel portal could receive value beyond the annual fee after purchasing just $2,000 in travel each year .

If you shop frequently at Costco, your cash-back earnings with the Costco Anywhere card could also more than offset the cost of membership. If you maxed out the 4% cash-back on gas or EV charging purchases alone, you would receive $280 cash-back each year.

Bottom Line: There is an annual cost associated with having each of our featured cards. However, both cards require a low spending threshold to realize enough earnings to offset those costs.

If you’re a Costco shopper, there is value with the Costco Anywhere card. If you spend $1,500 a year on gas (4% back) or $3,000 at Costco (2% back), you would cover the cost of a Gold Star membership fee.

One downside to the Costco Anywhere card is that the rewards are only distributed once a year . Fortunately, you can redeem that rewards certificate in-store for cash (or merchandise).

However, if you spend a lot on travel, want greater flexibility and value when redeeming your rewards, and can use the additional travel and shopping benefits, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is the better card. The additional value of the 10% anniversary points contributes to making the card difficult to beat.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card also serves a broader purpose of establishing a valuable long-term relationship with Chase, a prominent financial institution providing additional financial services products you may utilize throughout your lifetime.

So, both cards can live harmoniously in the wallet of a Costco shopper . Before you apply for either, though, be aware of Chase’s 5/24 rule .

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the costco anywhere card worth it.

Yes. For frequent Costco shoppers the card offers plenty of value. The 4% cash-back at gas stations and EV charging alone delivers enough value to more than offset the cost of the Costco membership required to be eligible for the card.

How do I redeem my Costco rewards certificate?

Each February, you’ll receive an email with your rewards certificate (if you’re signed up for paperless delivery) or a paper certificate in the mail. The certificate contains your earnings for the prior calendar year and can be redeemed for merchandise, cash, or check by visiting a Costco warehouse.

Can I redeem Ultimate Rewards points with PayPal?

Yes. You can redeem your Ultimate Rewards points during checkout at a merchant that accepts PayPal by linking your Chase card to your PayPal account, then selecting to use Ultimate Rewards points to pay. However, it is not recommended that you redeem Ultimate Rewards points via PayPal, as you will only receive 0.8 cents per point in value.

Does the Costco Anywhere card have a welcome bonus?

No. The Costco Anywhere card does not offer a welcome bonus.

Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred card come with lounge access?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card does not come with airport lounge access. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, which includes worldwide access to associated airport lounges, participating restaurants, and Minute Suites.

5 Ways a Costco Membership Can Save You Money on Travel

T ravel costs can add up quickly, so any savings you can score are a win for your wallet. Before finalizing the details for your next getaway, look for opportunities to save money. If you're a Costco member, your membership perks could help trim your travel spending.

Sure, Costco has great prices on groceries, electronics, and clothes -- but that's not all. Here are a few ways you can use your Costco card to get better deals on travel expenses.

1. Save money by booking reservations through Costco Travel

Before you make a reservation for an upcoming trip, check the prices on Costco Travel. You can book hotels, rental cars, cruises, and vacation packages through Costco, which could offer significant savings.

Need help determining where to go for your next trip? Costco highlights limited-time travel deals that could offer considerable savings. You may even receive free daily breakfast or resort credits when booking eligible trips, which would provide additional savings.

2. Get a deal on new luggage

Good luggage can last a long time, but there may come a point when you need to replace your existing suitcase. Check to see if you can get a deal on quality bags at Costco. Here are three deals to explore if you're shopping for new luggage:

  • Traveler's Choice Granville II 2-piece Luggage Set for $169.99
  • Samsonite Amplitude 2-piece Hardside Set for $199.99
  • Traveler's Choice 30" Creekside Hardside Check-in Luggage Spinner for $139.99

Luggage sets from popular brands like Samsonite can cost $300 or more, so getting your travel gear at Costco could be a win for your personal finances.

3. Add a driver for free on eligible car rental bookings

Another way Costco members can save on travel is by adding a driver to their car rental reservation for free. This membership perk applies to bookings made with Alamo and Enterprise for U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Ireland, and Spain rentals.

The additional driver fee is also waived for Avis and Budget U.S. car rental bookings. Additional driver fees usually cost $13 to $15 per driver per day. This membership benefit could save you up to $150 for a 10-day road trip.

4. Pay less for travel gift cards

You can use your Costco membership perks to save money on gift cards to your favorite retailers. But that's not all. Costco sells gift cards for popular travel companies like Southwest. At the time of writing, Costco has a $500 Southwest Airlines gift card for $449.99. Saving over $50 on your next airfare purchase can allow you to stretch your vacation budget further.

5. Save money on gas

You can also use your Costco membership benefits to get a deal on gas when filling up at Costco. This is helpful for your day-to-day needs and can also help you save money on your next vacation. Before your next road trip, check to see if any clubs will be along your route so you can fill up your tank at a discounted rate.

How much money can this perk save you? Most reports suggest that Costco's gas prices are about $0.20 less per gallon than other gas stations. If you drive a car with a 15-gallon tank, a discount of $0.20 per gallon would save $3 every time you fill up.

Get the most out of your Costco membership

A Costco membership costs $60 to $120 a year, depending on the level you choose. Use the benefits available to get the most out of your investment. You can save money on expenses beyond groceries and household goods. The travel savings mentioned above are just a few other ways to use your membership perks.

Check out our ultimate Costco guide for tips on maximizing the value of your membership. You should also consider using a credit card that earns rewards when paying for your Costco haul. Review our list of the best credit cards for Costco to learn more about the rewards potential.

A guide to the best credit cards for Airbnb stays

Chris Dong

Home rentals are a popular alternative to hotels, and you may be considering an Airbnb for your next trip. While the topic of the best credit cards for hotel stays gets a lot of attention, it's a different matter for Airbnb stays. That's especially true when you consider that hotel chains have their own credit cards, yet Airbnb does not.

If you've decided to go the Airbnb route, which travel rewards credit card should you use to make the purchase? Let's take a closer look at your best options.

What is Airbnb?

If you're unfamiliar with Airbnb , the site offers a wide variety of lodging options when traveling. In many cases, Airbnb provides privately owned rooms, apartments, houses, boathouses and hotel rooms. They're available for both short- and long-term stays.

While prices are sometimes more affordable than equivalent hotel rooms, it should be noted that Airbnb is not exactly a hotel on a budget. There are tradeoffs: things such as room service, daily housekeeping and other full-service amenities aren't usually found. However, if you are searching for unique accommodations — or want the feeling of being in a home while away from home — Airbnb could be a good option. Groups and those traveling with others also tend to prefer Airbnb, since it's easy to reserve multi-bedroom lodging.

costco travel amex card

Beyond stays, Airbnb offers experiences. These can include tours, outdoor activities like whale watching, cooking classes or even a great photographer to snap photos for your Instagram during your next vacation.

Airbnb doesn't have a loyalty program, so the best way to make the most of these types of purchases is by using the right credit card.

You may see some familiar names among the cards listed above. That's because several of the best credit cards for Airbnb are on our list of the best credit cards for travel .

Earning rates on the top cards for Airbnb

A closer look at the best credit cards for airbnb.

Airbnb typically codes as "travel" on your credit card statement. This means it will trigger any bonus points or annual credits offered in the travel category . Here's a deep dive into the best cards for Airbnb.

(Photo by Wyatt Smith/The Points Guy)

Annual fee: $150 (see rates and fees)

Welcome offer: Earn 40,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership

Earning rates: You'll get 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar on restaurant purchases , 3 points per dollar on transit including ride shares, subway swipes, tolls — and most importantly for Airbnb — plus 3 points per dollar on the broad category of travel, which includes things from flights, car rentals, hotels and home shares (yes, including Airbnb). You'll earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

Why we like it: Other cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express and American Express® Gold Card , have more limited travel categories that don't go beyond the scope of airfare and hotels . While the Platinum card has a higher bonus earning on airfare (5 points per dollar), it only applies to airfare booked directly with airlines or through the American Express Travel Portal (and the bonus earning potential is limited to the first $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year). In the Platinum's case, you'll also get 5 points per dollar spent on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel.

The Amex Green is the most flexible of the bunch when it comes to earning 3 Membership Rewards points for every dollar spent on Airbnb. Those 3 points equate to a 6% return based on TPG valuations . If you're flying to get to your Airbnb, you can also take advantage of an up to $189 Clear Plus annual statement credit and a $100 LoungeBuddy annual statement credit . Enrollment required for select benefits.

Annual fee: $550

Sign-up bonus: Earn 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Earning rates: Besides getting a $300 annual travel credit (that can be used toward Airbnb), you'll get 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on travel — after using the $300 credit — and 3 points per dollar on dining at restaurants worldwide. Other bonus categories include 10 points per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal and 5 points per dollar on flights booked in the portal. You can also earn 10 points per dollar on Chase Dining purchases and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Why we like it: First and foremost, you get to use the card's $300 travel credit toward a broad range of travel purchases , including Airbnb. Earning 3 points per dollar on Airbnb makes this card is useful for earning maximum Ultimate Rewards on your purchases after exhausting your $300 travel credit. Those 3 points equate to a 6% return based on TPG valuations — the same as the Amex Green . Additionally, the 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points sign-up bonus is worth $1,125 based on TPG valuations.

Annual fee: $95

Earning rates: You'll earn 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on travel — which doesn't apply to the card's $50 hotel credit , though you must use this in the Chase travel portal , so Airbnb bookings aren't eligible — and also earn 5 points per dollar on travel purchases in the Chase travel portal. You can also earn 3 points per dollar on dining , select streaming services and online grocery (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs). Through March 2025, you can also earn 5 points per dollar on Lyft rides . Cardmembers earn 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Why we like it: Firstly, the card has a low annual fee while still possessing strong earning categories. This includes a broad range of travel purchases, such as bonus points on bookings made directly with Chase or Lyft rides, as well as 2 points per dollar with Airbnb. Those 2 points provide a 4% return based on TPG valuations . Additionally, the 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points sign-up bonus is worth $1,538 based on TPG valuations.

Ink Business Preferred Credit Card

Sign-up bonus: Earn 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first three months after account opening.

Earning rates: You'll earn 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on the first $150,000 of combined spend on the card each anniversary year in the following categories: shipping purchases; internet, cable and phone services; advertising with social media and search engines and — most importantly for this discussion — on travel.

Why we like it: This is another Chase card that earns a fantastic 3 Ultimate Rewards points on travel, including Airbnb stays. Although the huge 100,000 Ultimate Rewards sign-up bonus is a great perk, it's important to note the card's hefty initial spending requirement. While this isn't a consumer card, getting approved for a business card may be easier than you think.

Annual fee: $95 (see rates and fees )

Sign-up bonus: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Earning rates: You'll earn 2 Capital One miles per dollar spent on almost everything with no annual cap, which means you're getting 3.7 cents' value (factoring in TPG's latest valuation ) every dollar in purchases.

Why we like it: The Venture card is an excellent choice for those who value a straightforward earning rate on all purchases, including vacation rental bookings and anything else you buy. In exchange for a $95 annual fee, this Capital One credit card earns you a flat 2 miles per dollar spent on every purchase you make, and you can even redeem your rewards to cover your Airbnb stay at a rate of 1 cent per mile. If you decide not to use your rewards for Airbnb bookings, you can use them to cover any travel purchases made with your card in the last 90 days or transfer them to its 15+ airline and hotel transfer partners .

Plus, the card currently offers a 75,000-mile bonus offer worth $1,388, according to TPG valuations . Add in the fact that Capital One has made some exciting additions to its program, and it's no surprise that this card is still one of our favorites here at TPG.

Why we like it: The Venture X card offers a straightforward 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases not booked in the travel portal, which includes a pack of gum or your next Airbnb booking. You can also redeem your rewards to cover your Airbnb stay at a rate of 1 cent per mile. If you decide not to use your rewards for Airbnb bookings, you can use them to cover any travel purchases made with your card in the last 90 days or transfer them to its 18 airline and hotel transfer partners . Annual fee: $0, but you must have an Amazon Prime membership

Sign-up bonus: $100 Amazon gift card immediately upon approval.

Earning rates: You'll get 5% back on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases and 2% back at restaurants , gas stations and local transit and commuting (including rideshare). You will earn 1% back on other purchases.

Why we like it: How does the Amazon card make our list of best cards for Airbnb? Two words: Gift cards. Airbnb gift cards are available on Amazon, and you can easily get 3% back this way. First, use this card to buy Airbnb gift cards; then, use those cards to pay for your upcoming stay. You can redeem your 3% back on cash back, gift cards or travel rewards, and it's all worth the same. Note that Airbnb restricts, in fine print, the use of gift cards for long-term stays (28+ days).

Maximizing your next Airbnb stay

Courtesy of Airbnb

One of the most important factors in making the most of your everyday spending is choosing the best travel rewards credit card for every purchase. This isn't always an easy task, as some cards earn valuable transferable points while others give bonus points for certain categories of purchases . Deciding what is more important is a personal decision.

For any Airbnb stay, though, see if you can double dip. For instance, you can easily earn bonus points or miles with programs like British Airways Executive Club, Delta SkyMiles or Qantas Frequent Flyer by clicking through their Airbnb shopping portals , regardless of what credit card you use to book.

These cards are all great options for Airbnb, but there are many others out there. For instance, if your local grocery store also sells Airbnb gift cards, you can use a card that earns bonuses at grocery stores to maximize your purchase. The same applies to office supply stores .

Since several credit cards offer annual travel credits , consider these as well. Using these credits can be a way to offset your travel costs when staying at Airbnb, since you can't transfer your points to Airbnb for award bookings.

Bottom line

Airbnb is a great lodging option for trips, as the platform represents a nice alternative to traditional hotels. I've personally stayed in dozens of Airbnbs throughout my travels and usually favor it over a chain hotel.

In addition to the unique properties you can book, there are also some solid credit card options that allow you to earn a decent haul of points or cash back. Just remember to review each listing's cancellation policy and reviews carefully before booking.

How to use credit cards to save money on gas

  • Published: Jun. 02, 2024, 11:22 a.m.
  • NerdWallet | special to cleveland.com

If you’re paying full price at the gas pump these days, you might be missing a way to fuel your household savings. That’s because many rewards credit cards offer bonus points when you use them at the gas station.

Used right, those rewards are like a discount on every gallon you buy. Few consumers would turn down these savings when the average price of a gallon of gas as of May 2024 was $3.61, according to AAA.

It’s fairly common now to get triple points — 3 points per dollar spent — for using a rewards card to pay for gas. Notably, some of the best cards for fill ups don’t feature the names of big oil companies or their service station brands. Instead, you’ll likely save the most with general rewards credit cards or cards associated with warehouse clubs and credit unions.

As you shop around for a card that will shrink your gas budget, keep these tips in mind.

Use 3% as a benchmark

The most lucrative cards for gas offer the equivalent of 3% or more in rewards. Better still, many cards with high rewards rates don’t charge an annual fee, so you’ll pay nothing to earn rewards that can be redeemed for cash back, gift cards, travel and more.

Credit score matters

More often than not, rewards rates of 3x and above are found in cards that require at least good credit , or a FICO score of at least 670, to qualify. If you have a low credit score, expect your credit card options to be limited. Nonetheless, there are a few cards for people with bad, limited or no credit that earn rewards, albeit modest ones.

Mind the caps

Some cards — especially those with 5% rates and no annual fee — limit how much gas spending will earn bonus rewards. For example, you might get 4% on gas purchases up to $7,000 in annual spending. After hitting the cap, gas purchases earn just 1% until the new year. Before applying for a card for gas purchases, check the rewards cap, if any, and decide if it’s generous enough to accommodate your spending.

Beware of ‘cents off’ rewards

Instead of a percentage of cash back or points per dollar spent, some cards — especially gas station-branded cards — give you a specific discount, such as 6 cents off per gallon. But when gas costs $3 per gallon, that 6 cents off is a mundane 2% discount. Plus, gas station cards typically earn rewards that can only be spent at that particular merchant.

Rewards at the gas station vs. pump

Many cards that offer outsized rewards on gas spending also reward purchases inside the service station such as snacks and wiper fluid. But some cards limit rewards to gas spending paid at the pump, and some gas cards earn elevated rewards only on in-store purchases, not fill ups.

Rewards credit cards have terms and conditions that govern their rewards programs; read through them to see what purchases earn rewards and if that list aligns with your expectations.

Warehouse cards have pros and cons

Warehouse clubs like Sam’s and Costco can be great places to get cheaper gas, savings that are compounded when combined with the stores’ co-branded credit cards that offer high rewards rates on gas. However, these same cards only earn those desirable cash-back rates up to a certain annual cap, and the reward redemption process can be cumbersome.

Remember, too, that you must be a member of those warehouse clubs, which means paying an annual membership fee.

Stack rewards with card-linked offers

Many rewards cards offer digital coupons in the form of card-linked offers through the issuer’s app. You “clip” the coupon by adding it to your card, and once you make a qualifying purchase, you’ll receive your savings, often in the form of a statement credit. It’s common to find card-linked offers for gas purchases, so before your next fill up, skim through your card’s digital coupon list for a station near you. You’ll save with the card-linked offer and earn rewards from that fresh tank, if your card earns rewards on gas.

Look beyond gas rewards

As you shop for a good gas credit card, consider whether the card offers rewards in other categories that align with your spending habits. That way, your gas credit card card transforms into an everyday card that you can use to pay for things like groceries, take out and streaming.

Plus, you might not spend as much on gas as you think. In 2023, U.S. households spent an average of $2,635 per year on gasoline, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even with a 3% rewards card, that’s $79.05 cash back per year, or about $6.50 per month.
