Port Copenhagen cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Copenhagen, Denmark. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Copenhagen Malmo Port (abbrev CMP) is a major turnaround cruise port in Northern Europe and among the most popular departure ports for Baltic Sea itineraries. Among those are the round-trips to Norwegian Fjords (along the Norway's western coastline) and to Scandinavia and Russia (visiting ports in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Russia). Cruises leaving out of Copenhagen comprise ~45% of the ship calls. Copenhagen is also a significant port of call on Christmas cruises leaving from UK ports.

In April 2017, the Swedish Maritime Administration gave its permission to Copenhagen Malmo Port to receive large-sized cruise vessels in port Malmo. There was a previous constraint on cruise liners visiting Malmo that limited the port calls to ships with LOA length not exceeding 240 m (787 ft). In 2016-Q3 were carried out extensive simulations in Gothenburg Sweden in order to ascertain whether it's possible port Malmo to handle larger-sized vessels.

Simulations were conducted over several days with different types of vessels in different weather conditions and wind forces. A total of 18 berthings (dockings) were performed. The conclusion was that it is possible ships to maneuver in the cruise port at max speed 3 kn (5,6 kph / 3,5 mph) and side winds up to 36 kph (22 mph) without any pilot boat assistance. However, there is a wind speed restriction during maiden ship visits - 29 kph (18 mph). The newly allowed max LOA length for cruise ships in Port Malmo is 300 m (985 ft).

In early-October 2019, CMP and the Danish company DFDS Seaways signed a deal to construct a shoreside power facility . By this project (inaugurated on October 26, 2021), two DFDS-owned cruiseferries ( Crown Seaways and Pearl Seaways ) were able to receive dockside electricity (from the city's power grid) when berthed. Both ships were deployed on the Norway-Denmark route Oslo -Copenhagen. For the project were contracted Actemium SAS (Sweden, parent company VINCI Energies SA//design and building) and COWI AS (Denmark/technical advisor). Shore power for cruise ships in Copenhagen will be available in 2024. The other Danish cruise port with shore power capabilities is Aarhus (since 2023).

Cruise itineraries to and from Copenhagen Denmark

Follows a list of destinations visited by cruise ships leaving out of Copenhagen:

• Roundtrip Baltic cruise itineraries leaving from Copenhagen visit Norway (Norwegian Fjords), Scandinavia and Russia (overnight stay in St Petersburg ), Iceland (with Faroe Islands). Most round-trips from Copenhagen are to Norway (7-days in length) operated during summer.
• Transatlantic crossings on repositioning cruises from Copenhagen to USA and Canada-New England are one-way itineraries offered at the end of the season (late August and September). These are westbound ship relocation routes and often include stops in Iceland and Greenland, also in UK (England, Scotland, Ireland) and end in NYC New York .
• Relocation cruises (Baltic to Mediterranean) leaving from Copenhagen are offered mostly by Costa and MSC ships, repositioning to their turnaround ports in Italy ( Savona , Genoa , Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice ).

Copenhagen cruise port

Port's cruise shipping business generates around 4000 local jobs and contributes USD 192+ million to city's economy.

• (statistics) Port's cruise shipping traffic grew from 173 ship calls (2002) to 368 (2011). The visiting passengers increased from 175000 (2002) to 820000 (2011).
• (statistics 2012) the port set a record with 376 cruise ship calls (vessels by 38 companies) that brought 840,000+ passengers and ~240,000 crew. Of all visiting passengers, 27% were from Germany, 17% from North America (USA and Canada), 13% from UK, 10% from Italy and Spain.
• (statistics 2013) During 2013 season, Malmo Port handled 357 ship calls (71 different cruise liners by 38 companies), over 835000 passengers, 230000 crew.
• (statistics) during peak season, the port receives daily up to 7 cruise liners with over 25000 passengers and 8000 crew.
• (statistics 2016) In late-February 2016, Copenhagen Malmo Port announced a 9% increase (over 2015) in visiting cruise tourists (740,000 projected, based on berth bookings). Of all ship calls, 47% were roundtrips. Season 2016 had booked 304 ship calls (67 vessels from 35 companies). The single-day record was in June - 7 ships with 24,000 passengers and 7,000 crew. After finishing season 2016, Malmo Port reported total 311 ship calls with ~732,000 cruisers.
• In 2017, the port handled 325 cruise ship calls and 850,000+ passengers. For the summer here was homeported one of NCL' s largest vessels -  Norwegian Getaway . The ship replaced here the smaller  Norwegian Star and carries nearly 1000 more passengers (3957, max capacity 4819). The new deployment resulted in ~36,000 more cruise passenger movements for the port. Ship disembarkation is between 7-11 am, and the afternoon embarkation starts in 12-noon till 5 pm (departure). In that time period, the cruise port handles ~12,000 suitcases, 15 large trucks deliver provisions for the cruise vessel, 40 tour buses serve the passengers, together with around 800 taxis, plus public transportation (bus, train, metro). According to Copenhagen Malmo Port's CEO, the increased NCL cruise passenger number generated additional revenue of around EUR 7,3 million (USD 8,7 million).
• In 2017, the port reported a record year with handled 325 cruise ship calls (by 72 different vessels and 36 companies) and 849,000 passengers. Of all visits (16% increase over 2016), 153 were turnaround/roundtrips. Of all the 72 ships, 55 were large-sized.
• (statistics 2018) the port handled 346 ship calls and ~850,000 cruise passengers.

In 2019, the Port had scheduled 352 ship calls (including 165 turnarounds) with estimated 750,000+ cruisers and economic impact ~EUR 200 million. On May 20th were handled 6 liners with ~24,000 passengers (plus 8000 crew). Malmo Port's largest cruise vessel so far is MSC Meraviglia (capacity 4488 passengers plus 1536 crew). In 2019, the liner visited Copenhagen 22 times.

Following the COVID crisis, in 2022 the cruise port handled 326 ship calls (out of Denmark's 592 total).

In 2023, the Port had booked 290 cruise ship berthings (out of Denmark's 432 total) including 9 maiden/first-time visits. In 2023, CMP (Malmo+Copenhagen=Visby) handled 389 cruise ship calls and ~940,000 tourists.

Copenhagen cruise terminal

The largest Copenhagen passenger terminal is Freeport Cruise Terminal, located north of downtown, in an industrial harbour. It is used by most major cruise lines and offers cafes, food kiosks, restrooms, Wi-Fi Internet, waiting lounge. Travel time from the cruise port to downtown Copenhagen is 1 hour (walk) and 20 min (shuttle bus or taxi). Copenhagen International Airport is 30 min from the terminal (shuttle bus or taxi).

The second cruise ship terminal is Langelinie. The pier is located 3 kn (2 mi) from downtown, close to the Little Mermaid statue.

The Langelinie is not a typical cruise terminal. The wharf has information centre and stores (near old warehouses). The shops sell jewelry, Danish clogs, porcelain, clothes, amber. Most city highlights are close for a walk. Often, cruise lines offer shuttle bus service to downtown Copenhagen. Alternative way is bus line 26.

Copenhagen-Oceankaj (Free Port) cruise terminals

Port Copenhagen has 3 cruise ship terminals - Freeport Terminals (Malmo Port), Langelinie Terminal, and Nordre Toldbod Terminal.

• Free Port Cruise Terminal is in an industrial harbor area located north of downtown. It is used by major cruise line ships and has fast food kiosks, cafes, waiting lounge. Free Port Malmo terminal building is a converted warehouse (sized 2400 m2 / 25800 ft2) and was inaugurated on May 1, 2014.
• Langelinie Pier (quay berths C190-199, no terminal building) is 3 km / 2 mi away from downtown. The wharf is used by large ships visiting Copenhagen as call of port. The pier has an info centre. Several stores are located nearby and sell traditional Danish souvenirs, jewellery, clothes.
• At Nordre Toldbod quay's berth (C177) dock mainly smaller ships and luxury megayachts.

Cruise ships leaving out of Copenhagen (departure port) dock at the old Free Port Terminal (Orientkaj berths C252, C254, and the Levantkaj berth C266) and at the new Oceankaj (berths C331, C332, C333).

In 2015 was opened the new pier at Nordhavn - Oceankaj (Ocean Quay). The new quay (berth C330) has pier length 1100 m (3600 ft), width 70 m (230 ft) and can accommodate 3 large liners simultaneously.

There are 4 buildings - Terminal 1 (quay C331), Terminal 2 (quay C332), Terminal 3 (quay C333) and Terminal 4 (quay C334). Each building is sized 3300 m2 / 35500 ft2, including 1800 m2 / 19400 ft2 passenger handling area, 1500 m2 / 16150 ft2 luggage handling area, solar-paneled roofs (800 m2 / 8600 ft2 solar panels providing all the power needed for the terminals).

Oceankaj terminals also have dedicated waste-water handling facilities (capacity up to 300 m3 per hour per ship). The new pier has connection points at every 60 m / 200 ft. The Copenhagen port's Oceankaj cruise terminals project cost around USD 100 million. The southernmost part of the complex was built on existing land (the remainder required landfill).

(NEW) Oceankaj Cruise Terminal

A new cruise terminal (at Oceankaj) is currently under construction, with initially scheduled completion in April 2022. However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, the project was postponed.

The new terminal has daily passenger capacity 5000, quay length 370 m (1214 ft), water depth 12 m (39 ft). The 2-story terminal building is sized 10000 m2 (107640 ft2) and connects with the docked vessels via 2x gangways (mobile passenger bridges).

Cruise ship terminal directions and parking

• Taxis are available at the Oceankaj Pier. The easiest way to get to the pier is by taxi. For call port stops at Oceankaj, the shipping lines usually provide bus shuttles to downtown (stopping in front of St Peter's Church). The shuttle service is the preferable choice since public transportation options at Ocean Quay are limited.
• Bus line 26 has a bus stop in Sundkrogsgade - some 50 m / 70 ft outside the port's entrance. Bus 26 service (to/from the port) is not available on Saturdays and Sundays.
• The Free Port Terminals piers Levantkaj and Orientkaj are at 10-15 min walking distance from the Nordhavn S-Tog (commuter rail) train station. Trains leave from Nordhavn Station every 5 min (going to Central Station). Tickets must be bought at the train station.
• In 2015 was opened a new Bus 25 route (between Norreport and Oceankaj) that runs only when cruise ships are docked.
• Bus 27 route (Osterport Station to Oceankaj) service is between 6 am to 7 pm (Monday to Friday) and between 8 am to 6 pm (on weekends).

From Central Station, the Copenhagen Airport (CPH, international airport) is accessible via the regular rail network and the city metro (from Kongens Nytorv, a 3-zone ticket is needed). Take the metro to Norreport Station, then transfer to Bus 25 or (if not operational) take the S-Tog (commuter rail) one stop to Osterport. Cross the tracks via the pedestrian overpass to the Bus 27 stop or take the S-Tog to Nordhavn (from the station continue by taxi).

Copenhagen Malmo Port ("Kobenhavn" in Danish), along with its cruise terminals also has passenger ferry terminals, container terminal and drydock facilities for major marine vessel refurbishments and shiprepairs.

Cruise ships usually arrive in Copenhagen in the early morning (5, 6:30, 7, 8, 8:30, 9 AM) and depart from Copenhagen in the late afternoon (4, 5, 5:30, 6 PM) or in the evening (8 or 10 pm with overnight stays in port).

Port Copenhagen is located at 20 min drive distance away from the city centre. The Copenhagen International Airport is at some 10 km / 6 mi (or 30 min drive distance) away from the cruise port.

Named for Master Chef Rudi Sodamin, Rudi’s Sel de Mer is an intimate brasserie featuring classic French dishes reimagined with contemporary flair. Menu selections include whole Dover sole meunière with shaved pink Himalayan sea salt, oysters on the half shell, fruits de mer, and salt-crust baked branzino, as well as favorites such as steak frites, duck cassoulet and coq au vin. Holland America Line's youth activities program, Kids Club, offers an array of entertaining events for kids and teens ages 3-17, supervised by a full-time, professionally trained staff. They'll have an opportunity to join other kids their age for arts and crafts, sports, video game competitions, scavenger hunts, challenging team games and themed parties. Note: Kids Club is not offered on cruises of 25-days or longer, including all Legendary and Grand Voyages. TRAVEL TO THE Copenhagen CRUISE TERMINAL

Cruise Terminal Oceankaj:

Oceankaj, 2150 København, Denmark

From the South: Approaching the city, take Kalvebod Brygge and then Niels Juels Gade toward the centre. Continue straight on to Kongens Nytorv, then Bredgade for 1 Km and slightly turn left to Grønningen. Turn right at Folke Bernadottes Allé (just before the Østerport train station) and continue straight on along Kalkbrænderihavnsgade and turn right on Sundkrogsgade (at the PFA red brick building). Drive along Sundkrogsgade and Færgehavnsvej. Turn right on Baltikavej which will become Oceanvej, until you reach the port terminals. From the North: It is easy to find the new terminal building when arriving by car from the north. Upon reaching the city, proceed straight down Lyngbyvejen and then turn left at Nordhavnsvej. Join Strandvænget and turn left on Sundkrogsgade. Drive along Sundkrogsgade and Færgehavnsvej. Turn right on Baltikavej which will become Oceanvej, until you reach the port terminals.

Reaching the port by metro is the fastest option if you are in the city or coming from Lufthavn Airport. The closest metro stop to Ocenakaj Port is Orientkaj station, with the Metro 4 (blue line). At Orientkaj station, please walk towards Sundkrogsgade and look for the yellow and blue bus stop. A free shuttle service runs every 30 minutes and will take you directly to Oceankaj Terminal 1 (free shuttle service runs until 14:00, afterwards you can take the 164 regular bus service).

• The nearest station for Oceankaj Port is Østerport station (lines A, B, C & E). If you arrive by train to this station, please follow the signs to combine with the Metro service, at the same station. Take Metro 4 (blue line), direction Orientkaj. Orientkaj is the final stop for this metro line. At Orientkaj station, please walk towards Sundkrogsgade and look for the yellow and blue bus stop. A free shuttle service runs every 30 minutes and will take you directly to Oceankaj Terminal 1 (free shuttle service runs until 14:00, afterwards you can take the 164 regular bus service).
• The nearest train station for Langelinie Pier is Østerport Station, which is an 18 minutes’ walk away to Langelinie Pier. Alternately, outside Østerport station, look for the bus sign number 27, which will get you closer to Langelinie Pier, only a 5 minutes’ walk away.
• As a third alternative, there a taxi rank outside the station which could be used to reach either port.
• You can also request the MSC Transfer service by calling our contact centre or your travel agent.

Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport ( https://www.cph.dk/en ) is about 40 minutes away from the port, depending on the traffic.

If you prefer to take the public transportation service follow these instructions: Take the Metro 2 (yellow line) towards the city, until Kogens Nytorv station. At Kogens Nytorv follow the signs to the Metro 4 (blue line) direction Orientkaj. At Orientkaj station, please walk towards Sundkrogsgade and look for the yellow and blue bus stop. A free shuttle service runs every 30 minutes and will take you directly to Oceankaj Terminal 1 (free shuttle service runs until 14:00, afterwards you can take the 164 regular bus service). You can also request the MSC Transfer service by calling our contact center or your travel agent. Fly&Cruise guests have their transfer included in the package.

Essentials to Pack for a Cruise

Packing for any trip takes some planning, but cruise vacations present a unique challenge – particularly due to limited stateroom storage space and sparse (or overpriced) options for purchasing accidentally forgotten items.

To help you decide what to pack for a cruise, we've curated a list of essentials recommended by cruise experts who regularly sail the high seas. Find your perfect cruise

Carry-on bag

Regardless of whether you bring checked luggage, you'll need some type of carry-on bag . Since checked bags need to go through security as they do at airports – and because you may need to wait for your stateroom to be ready, just like at a hotel – you'll want to be able to access any necessities pre-cruise. These might include a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the pools; medications; a bottle of water; and your smartphone, of course. You'll also want to keep your credit card , passport, and any other important documentation or valuables close by. A carry-on backpack works especially well since it can double as a day bag for shore excursions.

Checked bag

While you'll likely want to bring a checked bag, consider sharing one with your ship mate(s) to maximize stateroom storage space. Or, consider bringing medium-sized luggage, such as the The Medium by Away , for checking in.

Garment bag

While many cruises are less formal these days, a garment bag can still be handy for keeping select garments wrinkle-free (since clothing irons are prohibited on cruise ships). Top-rated options include the The Garment Duffel by Halfday and the Briggs and Riley Baseline 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag , both of which double as traditional luggage. If you pack your luggage right, you can make this your only suitcase, in addition to a carry-on bag.

Packing cubes or vacuum-sealed bags

Packing cubes are one of the best ways to organize your belongings for travel – especially in a tight cruise ship cabin. Top-rated options include the Veken packing cubes on Amazon (usually priced around $20) and all of the Pack-It Sets by Eagle Creek. The Pack-It Starter Set is especially ideal for cruising since it includes a garment folder designed to minimize wrinkles in clothing. Some cruisers also swear by vacuum-sealed bags , even though they can be a bit more tedious to pack.

Carry-on caddy

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer at The Points Guy, recommends a carry-on caddy , particularly if you're flying to your embarkation point. "I have a fabric sleeve that slides down over the telescoping handle on my carry-on to provide pockets for my passport, phone, coffee – all the things I used to have to juggle during check-in."

Digital luggage scale

The compact Etekcity scale – approximately $10 on Amazon – can weigh bags up to 110 pounds and help you avoid overweight baggage fees.

Bungee cord

"Especially for travelling with the family, I use a bright-green bungee cord to strap multiple pieces of luggage together," says Aaron Saunders, senior editor at Cruise Critic. "It's a lifesaver when boarding trains or disembarking ships, particularly when you ' re maneuvering a stroller and a little one around, too."

Luggage tracker

A luggage tracker isn't just useful for air travel. Attach one to your checked cruise luggage to see when it has arrived in your stateroom (or if it's stalled at security). Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic, doesn't go anywhere without her Apple AirTag after her luggage got stuck in Vancouver for over a week last June. "My AirTag use has expanded beyond my checked luggage, too. I also have AirTags in my handbag, my carry-on, my keychain and my wallet."

Cruise insurance

Due to the unpredictable nature of travel, cruise insurance can be a wise purchase ahead of your voyage. Travel policies can cover unforeseen expenses such as trip interruptions and medical emergencies.

While a passport is often required for cruising, rules can vary depending where you're traveling. Determine whether you need a passport for your upcoming cruise ; if you do, triple-check that you have it packed the day of departure.

Credit cards and local currency

When cruising internationally, consider getting small amounts of each country's currency to have on hand in port. Depending where you go, some local markets may only accept their own country's currency, not U.S. dollars or credit cards. It's also nice to leave cash gratuities for cab drivers, tour guides or servers; in the European Union, 1- and 2-euro coins are convenient and appropriate tips. In ports with vendors that do accept credit cards, be sure to carry a Visa or Mastercard , as some shops and restaurants do not take American Express .

RFID wallet

It's important to protect your travel documents with an RFID wallet like the TIGARI Passport Holder or the ZOPPEN RFID Travel Passport Wallet , the latter of which can hold multiple passports for a family. "Thieves and hackers can steal your credit card information just by using skimming devices," explains Jill Schildhouse, a cruise expert and U.S. News contributor who always travels with her RFID wallet. "And because your wallet wasn't even touched, you won't know it happened until you see your credit card statement."

Medications

Pack more than enough of your prescription medications as well as any over-the-counter medicines you'll need, just in case you encounter an itinerary change or travel delay. While some travelers find it easiest to bring personal medicines in their prescription bottles, others find travel pill boxes to be especially helpful for organization. The Sukuos Weekly Pill Organizer is a well-rated option, with detachable boxes for each day as well as compartments for morning and evening medications.

Sheet masks

Since flying can be so drying for the skin, Faust likes to use sheet masks. "My first step the night before I board (because you should always fly in a day early) is to hydrate with a sheet mask (usually from a Korean brand like Ballon Blanc or FaceTory )," she says. "If I'm meeting up with a friend, I bring an extra sheet mask so our trip starts out feeling a bit like a spa day!"

Magnetic hooks

A surprising fact: Cruise ship cabin walls are made of metal, which means you can optimize your storage space by hanging some of your belongings on magnetic wall hooks. The hooks are perfect for holding bulky coats or boots if you're traveling to a colder climate. You can also use them for wet gear on expedition ships and adventure cruises, or for drying out bathing suits after days at the beach or pool. Purchase a set of magnetic hooks for less than $10 on Amazon .

Like hotels, cruise ships can only provide so many hangers. Bring a few extras from home or pick up a pack from your local dollar store. You might also try packable hangers .

Wrinkle release spray

Whether or not you bring a garment bag, a travel-size bottle of wrinkle release spray, such as Downy Wrinkle Releaser spray , is useful to have on board. If you combine a spritz or two with the steam from your shower, you should be able to smooth out some of the wrinkles in your clothing.

Laundry detergent

"If you don't want to pay for laundry service or spend precious time in the self-service laundry room, bring a small bottle of laundry detergent like Woolite to wash key items in the sink: underwear, bras, quick-dry hiking shorts, bathing suits, etc.," recommends Schildhouse. "Every cruise ship shower has a retractable clothesline you can extend to drape the clothes over while they dry. This can also help cut down on the number of items you need to pack."

Over-the-door organizers

Over-the-door organizers with clear or mesh pockets allow you to find your feminine hygiene products, makeup, jewelry and other small items quickly – without having to hunt through multiple drawers or a tight stateroom closet. It's a good idea to purchase a two-pack like this option by Simple Houseware Store (available on Amazon), since you can also use one to store shoes and maximize floor space.

It goes without saying, but to say it anyway: A toilet spray like Poo-Pourri is a must for your cruise packing list. Any smell – pleasant or not – will travel quickly in small staterooms with small bathrooms. Buy a travel-size bottle to keep in your cabin.

Shampoo and conditioner

Cruise experts agree it's best to bring your own shampoo and conditioner in travel-size bottles, as most cruise ships don't provide separate shampoo and conditioner anymore; instead, they offer all-in-one dispensers. Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, likes to pack her shampoo and conditioner in the popular Cadence Capsules , noting she also uses them for another essential: sunscreen. "These capsules are easy to fill, never leak and have clear labels, which you can customize," she says.

Wine or Champagne

Most major cruise lines allow each guest to bring one to two bottles of wine or Champagne on board, while some luxury cruise lines allow even more than that. Disney Cruise Line also gives guests the option to bring a six-pack of beer instead of wine or Champagne. Be sure to consult your cruise line's policies when packing for your trip.

If you plan to bring wine or Champagne, you'll likely need a corkscrew . While some cruise lines may prohibit corkscrews, others allow them onboard; check your cruise line's policy before sailing. Bringing wine with a twistable cap may be a good alternative.

Portable humidifier

Cruise ship cabins can feel dry – especially in the colder months. A portable humidifier like the GENIANI Erie (around $25 on Amazon) can provide some relief. At about half a pound, this USB-powered device will fit neatly into your checked bag or carry-on luggage. The travel humidifier features two mist settings and has an automatic shut-off option, plus a night light to help you see around your cabin in the dark.

International travel adapter or converter

You'll likely need a travel adapter, since cruise lines homeported in international locales may have different electrical sockets and voltage strengths than you're used to in the U.S.

McDaniel recommends the OneWorld65 Travel Adapter . "I've used a lot of different travel adapters over the years, but this is my favorite. It charges up to six devices at once, has USB and mini-USB options, and works in over 200 countries," she says. "While many cruise ships have U.S. outlets, most usually also have European outlets. This adapter lets me take advantage of that outlet I'd otherwise ignore." She also notes that while cruise lines are getting better about having more outlets on their ships, it never feels like enough to keep your phone, camera battery, tablet, watch, headphones/earbuds and laptop charged (times two or more if you're traveling with others).

Sound machine

Cruise experts agree a sound machine can be helpful for blocking out the sound of late-night partiers returning to their staterooms (or your snoring spouse). Schildhouse likes the LectroFan Micro 2 for cruising. "It plays non-looping white noise and doubles as a speaker to play tunes while you get ready for dinner."

Tech organizer

A tech organizer like the BAGSMART electronics organizer case – available on Amazon for about $20 – can store all your cables, plugs, SD cards and earphones in one zippered, compact bag that will fit easily in your carry-on luggage. Despite its small size, it can also hold bulkier items like a small laptop charging cord.

First-aid kit

A first-aid kit is a good thing to have on hand no matter where you go. You can make your own using supplies you already have at home, or buy a premade first-aid kit on Amazon for about $20. While all cruise ships have medical facilities, it's useful to have these items with you on shore excursions, especially those involving active adventures.

Hand sanitizer

Regularly washing your hands and/or using hand sanitizer is essential to staying healthy while traveling, especially on a cruise ship. Stock up on a few travel-size bottles of hand sanitizer (less than $2 each at Walmart) ahead of your trip. If you're looking for something with less alcohol that's also less drying, check out Babyganics Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer .

If you're a parent, you know that your infant or toddler needs a very specific size – and in some cases brand – of diapers, which may very well be unavailable to you on your cruise ship or in the ports of call. Bring more than enough diapers to play it safe at sea.

Most cruise lines also require that non-toilet-trained infants and toddlers wear swim diapers in the children's water play areas. For the sake of sanitation, kids must be toilet-trained to use the pools on cruise ships.

Many cruisers like to personalize their cabin with stateroom door decor. Not only is it a fun tradition, but decorating the door can make it easier to locate your room, too. You can find lots of fun decor ideas on Pinterest as well as Amazon.

" Duct tape is a life-saver in many situations," says Kosciolek. "I primarily use it to attach my printed luggage tags, but it's also great for mending clothing issues on the fly and fixing broken luggage until you can get it back home."

"As a parent, I like to bring lanyards with sleeves so my kids can wear their keycards and not lose them," says Erica Silverstein, senior cruise editor at The Points Guy. "We hang them on the magnetic hooks I put on the wall, so they don't get lost in the cabin either."

If you're prone to (or think you may be prone to) motion sickness on cruise ships, put a pair of Sea-Bands on your cruise packing list. These soft wristbands use acupressure to prevent and minimize nausea and vomiting on board, and they are a reusable, drug-free alternative to traditional anti-nausea medications. You can purchase Sea-Bands on Amazon or at most drugstores.

If you need something a bit stronger than Sea-Bands (or to use in conjunction with them), Dramamine remains a tried-and-true solution for both preventing and treating sea sickness. Choose the Less Drowsy formula to avoid getting sleepy, and consider the chewable tablets (dye-free) if traveling with kids who are prone to queasiness. Many travelers like Bonine as a remedy for sea sickness as well.

Mix-and-match clothing

Pack a variety of mix-and-match items, also known as a capsule wardrobe, for your cruise. To do this, choose a base color – black or navy blue – for your wardrobe. Next, pack plain, neutral-colored items, then add a few patterned items to the mix. Remember to include a variety of styles (T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, pants, shorts, dresses, rompers and jumpsuits) and also consider reversible clothing and outfits that can easily transition from day to night.

Sports jacket or blazer

Adam Coulter, executive editor of Cruise Critic UK & Australia, recommends packing a sports jacket or blazer. "While cruise lines are getting more casual, what happens if you get that last-minute invite to meet the captain, or there's a meet and mingle where you want to look put together? A jacket will always elevate your elegance (even if you're wearing a T-shirt underneath)," he says. If you're in need of a travel blazer, Bluffworks has some well-rated options; the Gramercy , in particular, gets great reviews.

Themed party attire

Some cruise lines host themed voyages or parties on select nights where passengers can dress up to participate in the fun. You'll want to review your cruise itinerary before you go so you're prepared for the festivities. Bring your buccaneer gear if you're sailing aboard Disney Cruise Line; ships host fun events like Pirate Nights, pirate-themed dinners and a "Pirates in the Caribbean" show. On "The Love Boat"-themed cruises offered by Princess Cruises , pack your platform boots, glittery dresses, bell-bottom pants and halter tops for the line's 1970s-inspired disco party on the deck. No matter the theme, you can't go wrong with a couple of captain hats .

Travel wrap

A travel wrap is a versatile accessory that's useful for any trip – even more so on a cruise ship where it can get chilly when the sea breeze picks up. Available in nearly 10 different colors, J.Crew's Oversized Cashmere Wrap is a timeless staple, albeit a bit of an investment; for something less expensive but well rated, try this off-brand pashmina shawl on Amazon .

Packable jacket

If you're cruising to a cold weather destination such as Alaska, you'll need something heavier than a travel wrap, but not so bulky that it requires additional luggage. Consider a packable jacket that folds easily and compactly; travel experts highly recommend the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket .

Packable hat

If you're headed to the Caribbean or another warm weather destination, you'll want a beach hat to protect your scalp and face from the sun. This packable straw hat by FURTALK (available on Amazon for about $25) is a stylish women's option that features a broader brim and offers UPF 50 sun protection.

Comfortable walking shoes

Even if you never step foot off the ship, there is still plenty of walking to do between bow and stern. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps are safer than flimsy flip-flops when boarding a slippery tender into port (if your ship can't dock directly). Water shoes

Depending on your scheduled shore excursions, you might also need a pair of water shoes. For something that's both functional and fashionable, Crocs' Classic Clogs are a good option. While not totally waterproof, the Native Jefferson is a water-friendly, versatile option.

Versatile heels

"Over the years, I've learned that the key to avoiding overpacking is to bring one neutral pair of low heels that match every single eveningwear outfit I've packed – from flowy pants to dresses," says Schildhouse, who loves her Rockport Tabitha 2-Strap Heeled Sandals . "They have a cushioned footbed and shock-absorbing heel so you can dance the night away in the club, and a 3-inch block heel with traction to keep you steady on your feet even if the ship's rocking a bit."

Reusable water bottle

A reusable water bottle is useful for filling up at water and beverage stations on your cruise ship; it's also a necessity for shore excursions.

Bathing suit

Pack a couple of swimsuits for the pools, hot tubs and any shore excursions.

Swim cover-up

Another must-have for your cruise packing list is a swimsuit cover-up or two. These are great for wearing over your bathing suit during days at sea, as well as on excursions – especially if you're going on a Caribbean cruise . Amazon sells a variety of stylish, affordable cover-ups, and you can never go wrong with a classic white button-down shirt .

Dry bags are useful for shore excursions where you're likely to get wet but don't want the same to be true for your phone, camera and other precious items. "I use the Outdoor Research Unisex Dry Isolation Pack   and have never had so much as a drop of moisture enter it, which is important for me – it keeps my cameras, documents and important items from getting wet," says Saunders, adding that it functions as a great everyday backpack when it's not raining.

If you need more than one dry bag, cruise expert Brittany Chrusciel recommends the Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag Set . "Having these dry bags, in a variety of sizes, means I can bring all my gear along during a Zodiac cruise or snorkeling excursion without having to worry about it getting wet."

Waterproof phone case

"Although cruise lines provide guests with towels to take off the ship on excursions, they are often bulky and sometimes small," explains Chrusciel. Reef-safe sunscreen

When choosing a sunscreen, look for something that's reef-safe; not only are these sunscreens safer for the environment, but they're also better for you . The active ingredients in reef-safe sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or a combination of both. Top-rated mineral sunscreen brands include Think , Badger and Raw Elements , all of which also sell lip balm with sunscreen (another essential at sea).

After-sun lotion

You'll want an extra dose of moisturizer if you've been basking in the sun. COOLA makes an after-sun body lotion that cools and hydrates the skin with aloe vera, agave and lavender oil. Previous buyers rave about this lotion, noting they appreciate that the scent isn't overpowering.

A good book

Sea days are the perfect time to kick back and relax with a book you've been meaning to read. Find an oceanfront lounge chair in a shaded area on the pool deck, or grab a cup of tea and settle into a quiet nook indoors. There's no need to pack more than one book, however, as many cruise ships have libraries.

What not to pack for a cruise

Power strip.

Many cruise lines do not permit power strips as they present a fire hazard, while others allow them as long as they are non-surge-protected. Instead of a power strip, purchase a portable charger such as this highly rated one by Anker , which can power up multiple devices at once. This can be especially useful for shore excursions. When packing for your cruise, also think about your luggage: If it has an included charging port, you may not even need to purchase an additional charging block.

Weapons and restraints

Firearms, handcuffs and the like are not permitted on cruise ships. This rule also includes toy guns on most cruise lines.

While most major cruise lines allow guests to pack a limited amount of wine or Champagne per person, they do not permit hard liquor. Of course, those of age can purchase cocktails at any of the bars on board.

Household appliances

Irons and steamers are not permitted on cruise ships, which is why the aforementioned garment bags, wrinkle release spray and packing cubes are recommended for keeping clothing tidy and neat. Coffee makers and mug warmers are also prohibited.

While you can technically bring you own, it's not necessary as hairdryers are available in every bathroom on most ships.

CBD and marijuana

CBD that's derived from hemp and contains 0.3% THC or less is legal at a federal level. However, each state interprets and enforces this law differently; for example, many states require a prescription for it. Due to the ambiguity of the laws, most cruise lines continue to ban CBD in any form.

Marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law, which means you cannot bring it on a cruise ship – even if you're legally able to purchase it in your home state for recreational or medical use.

You’ll often find a DJ spinning decks in the courtyard at night – a dream for some, a nightmare for others.

Located in the hip Vesterbro neighborhood, this stylish 88-room hotel opened right before the pandemic and has since become one of the most coveted places to stay in Copenhagen. It featured on Travel + Leisure’s It List in 2022 and the World’s Best Awards in 2023, and as is often the case with any trendy new hotel, it is the destination du jour for professionals arriving for key cultural events, such as Copenhagen Fashion Week and 3daysofdesign.

Café Coco is located at the entrance of the hotel and is the primary dining offering on site, with a cool, casual atmosphere. But if you’re in the mood for something a bit more formal, Coco’s Mediterranean-inspired sister restaurant, Delphine, is located 30 steps away. Room sizes vary from singles at 150 square feet to junior suites at 270 square feet, and the larger rooms include a sitting area and bathtubs. It’s full of mid-century character and is located just opposite the Royal Danish Theater.

On-site dining consists of Sanders Kitchen – an all-day eatery with a simple evening menu serving delicious seasonal fare (think: dishes like salt-baked celeriac, vol-au-vent, and stracciatella with pumpkin and sage), and it is also home to Tata – a vintage-style cocktail bar that comes alive at night with both locals and travelers alike.

It’s not a traditional hotel, so it lacks some of the standard facilities that you may require (however, if you want a workout, it has a partnership with popular local gym Nordic Strong).

With only 10 well-edited rooms, The Audo Residence takes the concept of a boutique hotel to another level, feeling part concept store, part Airbnb. The rooms are spacious, with different residential-style configurations, ranging from the penthouse to studio suites, and it features stylish decor throughout, with pieces from Audo’s contemporary furniture collection, all available for purchase, should you be inspired to recreate the look at home.

Bathrooms follow the same Scandi luxe theme, and there is a restaurant on site, where organic sharing plates are served during the day and a seasonal three-course menu is offered at night (a favorite is the rib-eye sandwich on brioche with wasabi and leek mayo). Also within the same complex is the official showroom for Audo Copenhagen, so if you’re a design aficionado, this is an excellent option.

It has a lovely tropical-style pool that feels more like Bali than Copenhagen – a unique culture mash.

If you’re seeking something that feels distinctly Scandinavian, this is not the place – it has a jungle-style theme rather than the classically minimalistic vibe that the city is known for.

Located in a former factory in the ultra-hip Vesterbro neighborhood, Manon Les Suites is unlike any other hotel in the city. The aesthetic takes inspiration from Bali, with a pool that is supremely photogenic and a rooftop that is perfect for sunbathing, should you want your city escape with a side of resort-esque relaxation. The 87 suites are generously sized, outfitted in eco-friendly furnishings with kitchenettes and sofa beds, making it a great option for families or groups of friends (especially if you don’t intend on having every meal out). The hotel’s restaurant, Chapung, is also notable, serving Asian fusion classics from the sixth floor overlooking the city.

Its standout attraction is the rooftop terrace, which offers impressive views across the city, and in the summer months, it hosts a series of events and musical acts, attracting a mix of local denizens and international guests. There are 89 rooms that are indeed compact: the largest of them all is the junior suite, which is 322 square feet, and the smallest is a mere 130 square feet – just enough space to undress and roll into bed. It also has a bunk room category, which is a great option for groups of friends touring the city and simply seeking a clean and modern crash pad with an abundance of photogenic backdrops.

It is located at the edge of Tivoli – Copenhagen’s equivalent of Disneyland – so it is a great option for families with kids.

It is one of the more costly options in the city (but it is worth it in our opinion).

Tivoli is one of Copenhagen’s most beloved attractions and the Nimb Hotel sits right alongside its fairytale grounds on the western side of the gardens. The exterior looks more like an opulent Moorish palace rather than a historic Danish building, and it’s particularly enchanting at night, when it’s illuminated with glowing lights.

As for the actual accommodations, there are 38 spacious rooms with views across the theme park and the gardens, all furnished with elegant, modern interiors. Amenities are a step above standard, with Bang & Olufsen televisions, Nespresso machines, cocktail cabinets filled with spirit decanters, and some with fireplaces and balconies. It also has a rooftop swimming pool and six restaurants on-site, so there are options to suit everyone.

Some of the rooms are located on street level and people can peer in, so there is not a lot of privacy – we would suggest requesting something on a higher level.

Located in the building that formerly housed the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music , Nobis is the sister property of the luxurious Nobis Hotel Stockholm, marking the Swedish hospitality group’s first foray outside of Sweden. The interiors have been designed to respect the building’s heritage, blending original period details with modern Scandinavian minimalism.

It has 75 rooms, including four suites, all of which contain high ceilings that provide the illusion of having even more space. Interior highlights include plush furnishings, such as the Duxiana mattresses on steel four-poster bed frames, Italian marble bathrooms, and bath products by Byredo – certainly better than your average list of amenities. Modern renditions of Nordic fare can be found at the hotel’s restaurant, NOI, and you can enjoy elegant seasonal cocktails at the sleek Marble Bar (which does an excellent espresso martini with butterscotch foam). It also has a wellness center with a pool, sauna, gym, and lounge – ideal for all of those hygge moments.

It’s a dream destination for beer lovers, housed in the former Carlsberg brewery building. And in the spirit of imbibing, it has a wine hour and a nightcap hour, on the house for all guests.

The area is still being developed, so there aren’t as many shops and cafes nearby as there are in other neighborhoods.

This industrial hotel is housed in the former Carlsberg brewery building in the up-and-coming Carlsberg City district. It has a distinct façade lined with giant Instagram-worthy gold circles, and inside, you’ll find original architectural details, including steel beams and concrete walls.

The raw, minimalist theme continues throughout the hotel’s 155 rooms, dressed with herringbone floors with metal tables and clean, simple furnishings rendered in a mosaic of block-colored neutrals – think charcoals, tans, and icy whites. On top of the hotel, you’ll find Tramonto Rooftop – an Italian restaurant and bar with impressive 360-degree views across the city – a popular place for both locals and travelers during the warmer months. It also features a small fitness room and in-room fitness kits are available as well.

It has 390 rooms, which is on the larger side for any hotel.

Since opening its doors in 2020, Villa Copenhagen has made a favorable impression among travel industry insiders, including Jaclyn Sienna India, founder and CEO at Sienna Charles, a luxury travel concierge. “My go-to accommodation is Villa Copenhagen, housed in a gorgeous century-old building. Their designer-furnished suites typically feature a master bedroom, a dining area, and a bathroom complete with a spacious freestanding bathtub.” Rooms are indeed more spacious than most in the city. As for the other highlights? “I highly recommend trying the pastries at their on-site bakery and the fish at the brasserie, which uses only locally-sourced ingredients,” India adds. “And I love starting my mornings doing yoga in the fitness room, and occasionally wrapping up the day with a session in the sauna."

The Darling

It has a homey ambiance; plus, complimentary slippers and a bottle of champagne are served on arrival.

There is no elevator as the building dates back to the early 1700s.

This exclusive guest house contains two beautifully decorated residences that feel like you’re staying in the private apartment of a hip Danish friend rather than a hotel that you’re paying for. There are abstract artworks, whimsical wallpapers, and stylish examples of Danish decor throughout – everything looks like it’s been carefully collected over time by someone with good taste.

If you’re looking for more of a residence-style accommodation, where you have all the facilities that a private apartment would offer, this is a great option, given it includes a kitchen, living room, dining room, and a study, in addition to a spacious bedroom and bathroom. The inaugural residence named “The Grand,” also has a private outdoor terrace overlooking The Church of the Holy Spirit – a tranquil place to enjoy coffee in the morning. And despite the residential-style set up, it has a concierge that can provide all the services you would be able to access at a luxury hotel, including a driver, a chef, a masseuse, and even a florist.

This authentic hotel is located in Frederiksstaden – an area known for its architectural beauty and well-preserved buildings from the Rococo era. Nearby you will find notable historic attractions, including Amalienborg Palace, where the Danish royal family resides, as well as the Marble Church (Frederik's Church), Amalie Garden, and the Nyhavn neighborhood is just a three-minute walk away.

Accommodations vary from the penthouse to apartments, suites, and rooms that are suitable for solo travelers and couples, and the decor has a warm, lived-in feel.

SP34 is a hip establishment from the hoteliers behind some of Copenhagen’s most revered design hotels, and the group’s signature style is evident throughout, with Nordic decor and a cool, minimalist vibe. The 188-room hotel opened in 2014, with three restaurants (including an organic burger joint, a plant-focused bistro, and a casual eatery, Din Nye Ven), four bars, a private cinema, and a terrace across three connected apartment buildings.

There are exposed brick walls, calming neutral tones, and clean, minimal Scandinavian furniture is featured throughout. It’s a great place for creatives that thrive in a lively scene, and on Friday nights, there are DJs and musical acts, which is ideal if you want to immerse yourself in the local nightlife culture without having to leave the property.

For dining, there is a Peruvian Japanese restaurant, ISSEI Copenhagen, that is not to be missed, as well as a classic breakfast selection. Know Before You Go

Embrace the concept of hygge.

“The essence of hygge is something that is very unique, though hard to pinpoint, especially in the English language where it often gets translated to cozy,” says Mads Østergaard, U.S. head of PR and Press for VisitDenmark. “Hygge is more like a state of mind, an ambiance, a feeling, or a vibe. Think cozy sweaters, a warm fireplace, good friends around you, a laid-back feeling, family, the feeling of being sheltered. Though all that is not uniquely Danish, the Germans call it ‘Gemütlichkeit,’ the Norwegians call it ‘Koselig,’ and the Dutch call it ‘Gezelligheid,’ we are probably the only ones who use it as a verb. We can 'hygge' with each other. We can ask a good friend if we want to 'hygge.' As an adjective or an adverb, it constantly gets thrown around in the Danish language as a way of saying ‘nice.’ Was it a good party? Yes, it was ‘hygge-ligt.’ That shows how highly valued hygge is.”

Most people speak English

“Undskyld, jeg forstår ikke, hvad du siger! Just kidding!” Østergaard jokes. “Practically everyone in Denmark speaks English. Nowadays, we start learning in first grade, but my grandparents’ generation spoke English very well, too. As a tiny nation that wants its voice to be heard on the world stage, we quickly realized that we needed to speak English.”

The best way to get around is by bicycle

“About 50 percent of Copenhageners bike to work every day, including politicians and on rare occasions, the royals,” Østergaard says. “Biking is a safe, affordable, and green way to get around in the city, and continued municipal investment has made this number rise over the last years. Copenhageners might bike fast to get from point A to B, so watch out in rush hour. Luckily, most of our designated biking lanes are quite spacious. And if you’re not comfortable on the ‘iron horse’ as we call it, our new subway system will get you anywhere in the city with new improvements getting you to places like Sydhavnen in the southern part of Copenhagen.”

Experience the city like a local

Østergaard recommends experiencing Copenhagen like a local. “Ride a bike through the biking lanes that snake through the city like green highways. Share a meal with Copenhageners at one of our great communal dining destinations. And if the temperature allows it, jump in the water in our clean canals at some of our designated harbor-baths. As a former Copenhagener, these were all part of my everyday life,” he explains. “And don’t just stay in the city center. Explore the many neighborhoods like the new Carlsberg neighborhood on the former brewing grounds of the beer giant with an eclectic mix of new and old architecture or the vibrant and multicultural neighborhood of Nørrebro. Or go even further – with a train ride of 30 minutes you can experience idyllic fishing villages with colorful houses like Dragør or see King Hamlet’s Elsinore with the Majestic Kronborg Castle overlooking the narrow strait between Denmark and Sweden.”

Oceania Cruises’ Vista Completes First Year in Service

• May 4, 2024

Oceania Cruises’ Vista is completing its first year of service this month. After being delivered by the Fincantieri shipyard, the 67,000-ton cruise ship was officially welcomed into the company’s fleet on May 8, 2023.

On that day, the Vista was christened during a special ceremony held in Valletta, Malta . The chef, author and restaurateur Giada De Laurentiis served as the ship’s godmother during the event, which also included an exclusive 60-minute concert by musician Harry Connick, Jr.

A few days after the christening ceremony, the Vista departed on its first revenue sailing on May 13, 2023.

Sailing from Civitavecchia to Trieste, the seven-night cruise sailed to the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, featuring visits to destinations in Italy, Greece and Croatia.

The Vista then continued to offer itineraries in Southern Europe before repositioning to North America in early September.

Following a fall program in Canada & New England, the vessel repositioned later repositioned to Miami ahead of spending the 2023-24 winter season in the Caribbean.

In 2024, the 1,200-guest cruise ship is set to return to Europe for a second summer season in the Mediterranean.

Extending through December, the program features seven- to 22-night cruises departing from various ports in the region, such as Trieste and Civitavecchia, Italy; Istanbul, Turkey; Barcelona, Spain; and Piraeus, Greece.

After a second winter season in the Caribbean, the ship is scheduled to debut in Northern Europe for the 2025 summer.

The Vista is also scheduled to sail Oceania Cruises’ 2026 180-day Around the World. Marking the first time the global cruise is offered by one of the company’s newest ships , the vessel is set to sail from PortMiami on January 6, 2026.

During the cruise, the Vista is scheduled to cross three oceans, sailing to Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, Europe and South America, while visiting a total of 101 ports of call across 43 countries and territories.
