The Journey has a 5th lower anchor in the 2nd row – which theoretically allows a car seat to be installed in 2C with LATCH (but not when a car seat is in 2P)… but the reality can be quite different.

Below is an image from the owner’s manual, showing that there are 5 lower anchors (A through E). A and B are a pair to install a car seat in 2P, B and C are a pair to install a car seat in 2C, and D and E are a pair to install a car seat in 2D. B can NEVER be used by more than one car seat at a time.

Note: The 2009-2010 Journey does not have a head restraint in 2C – since 2011 there is a head restraint for 2C. Otherwise the back seats are identical in all model years.

3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Fit in a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey is one of the newest mid-sized SUVs / crossovers on the market, offering an alternative to a market full of SUVs like the Honda Pilot , Toyota Highlander , Ford Edge , Jeep Wrangler , and Jeep Grand Cherokee . It’s a sharp looking SUV and one of the only mid-sized SUVs out there that offers a 3rd row, along with SUVs like the Pilot, Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe , Ford Flex , and Volvo XC90 , which made me curious about how it does when it comes to successful 3 across car seat installations.

You know the basics of best practices in car seat safety: rear-face as long as possible ( ideally until 4 !), and then forward-face as long as possible ( ideally until 8 !), and then booster until a regular belt fits your child ( which typically happens between 10 and 12 ).

However, for this information to be helpful, you need to know if a particular car seat will fit in your particular vehicle. Here are my experiences fitting a range of seats inside various years of the Dodge Journey. I’ll periodically update each page as I try more seats in more positions.

Tips and Tricks:

This is the only generation of the Dodge Journey, and it is 192 inches long and 72 inches wide. Achieving 3 across installations should be relatively straightforward at that width in the 2nd row, but achieving even 2 across will be significantly more difficult in the 3rd row jump seats.

It may also be slightly easier to achieve a 3 across installation in the 2009 and 2010 model years than in the 2011 and later model years due to slight updates in the Journey’s interior trim linings.

It’s also important to note that in the Dodge Journey, there are no tethers in the 3rd row if a 3rd row is present, and there are only 2 tethers in the 2nd row. Some parents also state that the 3rd row Journeys are wider than the 2nd row Journeys, although I haven’t been able to verify this.

Furthermore, the center seat is the one I find most tricky for a good install with particular seats, due to the plastic hinges present as well as the locking latch plate on the seat belt itself. The buckle stalk is also fixed in place and rather short, which can also make things tricky.

For 2020, the Dodge Journey is sent once more unto the breach in an attempt to woo you over with its low price and ... well, not much else. This small seven-seat SUV was once available in a multitude of trim levels and offered a strong optional V6 engine and available all-wheel drive. Now Dodge has stripped the Journey down and simplified it to only two trim levels and one available engine and transmission. It also can only be had in front-wheel drive.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Dodge Journey SE Value 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Briefly ahead of its time, the Journey has been largely forgotten by Dodge and left with a low-budget interior, an underpowered engine and subpar driving dynamics. Even its low starting price isn't enough to make much of a case for the Journey since most of its main competitors can be had for similar money.

In its class, the Kia Sorento leads the way with more space, an abundance of features and an excellent warranty, with the stylish Volkswagen Tiguan coming in second thanks to its safety features and user-friendly tech interface. The recently rehabilitated Mitsubishi Outlander is a more distant third but is still a considerably better option than the Journey.

All Journeys are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (173 horsepower, 166 lb-ft) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive has been available in the past, but all 2020 Journeys are front-wheel-drive.

Selecting the SE Value trim delivers a bare-bones experience, with manually adjustable cloth seats, 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, and a basic six-speaker audio system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Available to the SE Value trim exclusively are the Blacktop Package , which adds black exterior accents and black aluminum wheels, and the SE Value Popular Equipment Group , which includes a power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, satellite radio and three-zone climate control.

The Crossroad upgrades the seating surfaces to leather and brings a power-adjustable driver's seat. It also adds a sunroof and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and dresses up the exterior with body-colored mirrors and 19-inch alloy wheels. The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group includes navigation, a more powerful audio system, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Once a child is seated on the booster, you should slide the latch plate (the metal part that goes into the buckle) on the seat belt as high as necessary to make the belt long enough to go around the child’s lap. When you buckle the seat belt, Dodge advises that the lap portion be low on the child’s hips and as snug as possible.

In our Car Seat Check of the Journey, we found that regular booster seats also can be installed in the second or third row, but one “tester” preferred the Journey’s integrated booster because it made him feel more like a regular kid than a youngster.

installing car seats?

i just bought a 2010 dodge journey and i can't install a car seat in the middle seat? (the middle row) because the seat belt doesn't lock?

is this a problem with just mine, or do all of them not lock?

i couldn't get it to install tight enough with the LATCH and it was too far over and taking up the other seat..

Do you mean that the retractor does not lock or that the latch plate will not lock in the belt catch?

Generally you should have one of these seatbelt clamps,

they usually come with seat sometimes affixed to rear

of childs carseat.

From the manual:

In this mode, the shoulder belt is automatically pre-locked. The belt will still retract to remove any slack in the shoulder belt. The Automatic Locking Mode is available on all passenger-seating positions with a combination lap/shoulder belt.

Use the Automatic Locking Mode anytime a child safety seat is installed in a seating position that has a belt with this feature. Children 12 years old and under should always be properly restrained in the rear seat.

• Allow the belt to retract. As the belt retracts, you will hear a clicking sound. This indicates the safety belt is now in the Automatic Locking Mode.

Unbuckle the combination lap/shoulder belt and allow it to retract completely to disengage the Automatic Locking Mode and activate the vehicle sensitive (emergency) locking mode.

I noticed the same on our 2011 Journey. Pulling the belt out all the way on the 2nd row middle seat does not engage the locking mechanism, even though the manual states that it should have the ALR. Not sure if it's an issue with our Journey, or if the manual is incorrect.

You really should use the latch system...much better than seatbelts. If you don't think its tightening enough, then kneel (put all your weight) on the car seat while tightening. That's how I do it and they are rock solid.

You're right, I just tried the center belt in my 2013 and it does not have ALR either, yet the 2013 manual says the same thing - that it is available in all passenger seating positions with a combination lap/shoulder belt.

I agree you should use the latching system. I had no problem getting mine tight enough. I used those foam pool noodles so it would not dent the seat cushion and it is nice and snug, and only denting the pool noodle.

I see that this is an old topic but im just curious if anyone ever found out if this was a defect or not. We need to be able to switch cars easily and the Latch system is not as easy as the seatbelt.

The dealership is clueless about what a locking seatbelt is.

There is a clip that comes with most child safety seat s that clips the belt together

this is what it looks like in my situation.This will stop it from unspooling keeping the belt tight.

I used the exact same clip for my daughter's car seat !  She 22 now, so these clips have been around for a while.

Locking seatbelts are on the outboard passenger seats (front passenger, second row left and right passengers, third row passengers.)  It is not available for the driver (as the installation of one would be a safety issue) and it doesn't exist in the second row middle seat.

To activate them, pull the seatbelt all the way out.  It will click, and then click repeatedly as you let it back in.  Only when it retracts to a certain point will the locking mechanism release.

To install a car seat using the ALR belts, position the seat first, route the seat belt through the seat, and insert the belt into the latch for that seat.  Then, fully extend the belt and release it, allowing the retractor to catch.  Tighten the belt as necessary.

For the middle seat, use the latch plate per the instructions of the seat manufacturer.

LATCH anchors are substantially easier to work with.  Keep in mind the weight restrictions of the vehicle (LATCH is usually about 65 pounds or so, but the exact amount is in the manual) for using LATCH anchors, and remember that this is the combined weight of the child and the seat.

As you can see, the Journey’s third row is rather cramped compared to the first two rows. The first two rows offer adequate space, but the same can’t be said for the third row. Like many smaller three-row SUVs, the Journey’s third-row seating is best reserved for small children. We can’t just imagine a full-grown adult or larger teens having a relaxing time in the third row. Those in the second row will likely have to sacrifice some legroom to fit passengers in the third row.

Thankfully, the Dodge Journey’s interior offers a good deal of versatility. The third row is foldable, giving you usable cargo space for your gear and luggage. This is good because you only have 10.7 cu-ft of space behind the third row. Folding the third row in a 50 ⁄ 50 split will give you access to 37.0 cu-ft behind the second row. Lastly, the second row is also foldable for a total of 67.6 cu-ft of cargo space. Additional cargo space is available via the underfloor storage bin under the rear cargo area.

Dodge Journey Interior Features

The 2020 Dodge Journey comes with a standard Uconnect infotainment system which gathered praise from critics and customers because it’s an easy-to-use system. However, the standard screen is only a 4.3-inch which is much smaller than many modern infotainment systems. The Crossroad trim brings an upgrade to an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen that features AM/FM radio, SiriusXM support, MP3 support, an auxiliary audio input jack, and a USB port. The Dodge Journey doesn’t support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

A six-speaker setup is the standard sound system with a subwoofer for all Journey trims, with an optional upgrade to a premium sound system. Customers can also pay for a rear-seat entertainment package with a 9.0-inch display for passenger entertainment.

The 2020 Journey’s interior is far from upscale. There are a lot of low-quality bits inside the Journey, from hollow door-trim panels to plasticky shifters. The Journey’s selling point is that it’s the least expensive SUV that provides three rows of seats for seven passengers, and that’s about it. Unfortunately, the Journey’s third row is insufficient for large and growing families. With only 23.4 inches of legroom, the third row can only realistically accommodate small children – teens and adults will not have a comfortable time in the third row. We’ve read reports that second-row passengers will have to give up some of their legroom to seat people in the third row, even children.

Therefore, we can only recommend the Journey SUV if you have a young family or are not planning to use the third row. If you want more passenger space, you’re better off shopping for the Journey’s competitor.

The interior of the 2012 Dodge Journey is well-liked by reviewers for its good cargo space, optional third row that increases seating for seven, handy optional booster seats, easy-to-use infotainment system and quality construction. The only aspects that receive complaints are the second and third rows that reviewers say are too small for most adults.

Five-passenger seating is standard in all 2012 Journey trims, and a third row, which increases seating to seven, is optional in all trims. Reviewers say the front seats are comfortable, the second row may be tight for taller adults and the third row is best for children. Integrated child booster seats for the second row are optional in all trims. Springing for them may be worth it, especially if you have kids in car seats, since they will eventually need a booster anyway.

Last year, the 2012 Dodge Journey got an extensive redesign, and reviewers are still impressed with the updates. They say that thanks to the interior’s modern design and quality materials, the Journey now has one of the best cabins in the class.

Though Bluetooth and satellite radio aren’t standard, the base 2012 Dodge Journey is still well equipped. Standard features include dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, a USB port and an auxiliary input jack. Dodge's Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system is also standard. Reviewers are impressed with the Uconnect system in particular. They say it is very easy to use, even when you add optional navigation, which absorbs the climate and stereo controls. These days, that’s a rare compliment for any car because interior technology is becoming more elaborate and tougher to use.

Cargo space in the 2012 Dodge Journey is in line with what the competition offers. Behind the optional third row is 10.7 cubic feet of cargo space. Behind the second row you’ll get 39.7 cubic feet of space or 37 if you have the optional third row. With both the second and third rows folded, the Journey has 67.6 cubic feet. Some competitors offer slightly more cargo space overall, but that’s still very good for the class. Reviewers say that folding the second and third rows is a simple process, and like that the Journey has a lot of storage bins that can make life easier for parents.
