Tour of Britain 2024 Stages and Routes

The first details of the 20th edition of the modern race will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Following the cancellation of the 2021 edition owing to the death of Her Majesty The Queen, organisers SweetSpot will continue to work with the local authorities who were due to host stages to explore opportunities to host the race in the future.

One of the most highly anticipated professional cycling events in the United Kingdom is all set to kick off in the first week of September. The Tour of Britain is gearing up for its 2021 edition, which will also be the 14th edition since the reincarnation of the event with several changes in 2004. The cycling Tour of Britain route was unveiled back in February 2021 with the addition of a time trial stage. It now means that the Tour of Britain 2021 has nine stages compared to 8 in recent years. Even those eight Tour of Britain stages were a bump up from the five stages the event used to have in 2004.

The Surprising Route

Tour of Britain 2021 race director Mick Bennett unveiled the cycling Tour of Britain route in the hope of keeping up with the recent momentum of popularity gathered by the event. Several changes to the Tour of Britain stages over the last few years have made it more competitive and brought it to the levels of Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana. Attracting the best riders in the world to the United Kingdom is one of the sole objectives of this event.

George Square in Glasgow will form the location for the start of the 2021 edition. The nine Tour of Britain stages will see riders cover just over 1300 km from September 4 to September 11. This will certainly take its toll on the riders, but there is a consensus that the 2021 edition will be slightly easier than the 2015 edition. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for riders to make use of every Tour of Britain stage to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Qatar. This reason alone is expected to increase general interest amongst riders in the competition.

Tour of Britain 2021 – Challenging Parts

The upcoming competition brings a lot of aspects like challenging races and sprint finishes. These are aspects which will have a lot to do at the World Championships. Glasgow last played host to the start of the event back in 2008. It provides a sprint finish to the Castle Douglas since there is no prominent climbs along the way. Stage two goes through various sections of the enchanting Lake District, which may not offer anything out of the blue for experienced riders. The Lake District has been a standard fare of the Tour of Britain in recent years. Even though much of the route will be familiar, riders will have to be prepared for the climb from Ambleside towards the end of the stage.

Stage three at the Congleton marks the beginning of the tough stages. As expected, the stage four takes its toll since it is the longest. As the competition enters into the final stages, riders go through Wales and Bath before a time trial event near London. The final stage will be a replica of the final stage in 2015, which received a lot of rave reviews. Each stage is tough and this will be on the minds of punters when it comes to Tour of Britain bet online.

The growing popularity of the event has also resulted in a number of punters looking for good Tour of Britain bet online opportunities. These opportunities are presented because of the Tour of Britain 2021 odds, which are once again leaning towards the favourites like Alberto Contador. Even though it makes a lot of sense to make an early judgement, Tour of Britain 2021 odds at a later stage will provide a more accurate picture about the favourites for the title.

Tour of Britain Women stages announced as countdown to Grand Départ begins

The hosts of the 2024 Tour of Britain Women stages have today been announced, as preparations for the inaugural edition of the race progress ahead of the Grand Départ in Welshpool on Thursday 6 June.

The race will see the world’s top female riders and teams go head-to-head across four tough stages of racing, in what will be the first major international stage race delivered by British Cycling Events.

Hundreds of thousands of fans will line the streets for what is the nation’s biggest free-to-attend sporting event, as the country gears up for another thrilling summer of cycling.

This year’s race will feature a number of familiar start and finish locations which have successfully hosted major international events in recent years.

The race will begin in Welshpool, situated in the heart of mid-Wales. Welshpool hosted the thrilling finish of stage four of the 2022 Women’s Tour, where Australia’s Grace Brown (FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope) sprinted to victory. The stage will see riders head north to the picturesque seaside town of Llandudno, in what will be a challenging start to the race.

Stage two will see riders stay in Wales for a start and finish in Wrexham, which also featured in the 2022 Women’s Tour. The rolling route will take in a series of challenging climbs in the dramatic Clwydian Range and Dee Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Wales.

The caravan then will cross the Welsh border to the north-west of England, where Warrington will host both the start and finish of stage three on Saturday, with a flatter route that will favour the sprinters. Warrington welcomed the men’s Tour of Britain in 2021, where Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) claimed a memorable stage win.

The race will then conclude in Greater Manchester, as part of the city region’s European Capital of Cycling celebrations. Riders will depart from the National Cycling Centre, the home of British Cycling, before taking in some of the region’s challenging climbs before they reach the finish line in Leigh, where the race winner will be crowned.

Full routes for each of the stages, along with the teams and riders competing, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tour of Britain Women

“A monumental effort”

The race route has been designed and agreed in just 10 weeks, when we launched our new vision for major cycling events in Britain, thanks to the hard work and support of an experienced team of event staff. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to Welsh Government, Conwy County Borough Council, Powys County Council, Wrexham County Borough Council, Warrington Borough Council, Manchester Active and others who have demonstrated such enthusiastic support for the race.

Jon Dutton OBE, CEO of British Cycling, said:

“Today is another important milestone in our journey and reflective of the enormous goodwill and support which major road cycling events continue to enjoy.

“Our primary focus has been to deliver a safe and competitive race in 2024, and while there is still a great deal of work to do, we remain every bit as determined to harness the race’s spotlight to make a real impact in the communities which it touches. We know that it is a vision which resonates strongly in the positive conversations we’ve been having with prospective commercial partners and hosts which continues to be extremely encouraging.”

Rod Ellingworth, who was announced as Tour of Britain Race Director in March this year, said:

“It’s been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year’s Tour of Britain Women. The race will take in four competitive and challenging routes, some challenging climbing in Wales and what I’m sure will be brilliant crowds on the roadside throughout.”

Lizzie Deignan, former road world champion and Olympic silver medallist, said:

“It’s always special to race in Britain, and I’m so pleased to have two top level stage races to look forward to on home soil as I ramp up my preparations for a busy summer ahead.

“There’s clearly so much support and fondness for the race, both at home and further afield. The four stage hosts deserve credit for their commitment to women’s racing and for helping to make the race happen, and I’m sure that together we can put on a brilliant show in June.”

Earlier this month, British Cycling announced that the Tour of Britain Men would be delivered over six days in 2024, with an ambition to bring future parity to the two national tours, following the alignment of the event names in 2024.

Positive conversations continue with a number of commercial partners along with towns and cities interested in hosting future stages of both the men’s and women’s events.

Lizzie Deignan

“An opportunity to showcase the best of our area”

Jeremy Miles, Welsh Government Economy Secretary, said:

“Wales and cycling go hand in hand, with our spectacular scenery and routes providing elite and recreational cyclists alike with both challenge and enjoyment.

“This is a welcome return to Wales for this fantastic event and provides an excellent opportunity to showcase Welshpool, Llandudno, Wrexham and the surrounding area to an ever-growing cycling audience. We are very pleased to have been able to support the event and look forward to providing a warm ‘Croeso’ to all in June.”

Diane Reynolds, Powys County Council’s Director of Economic Development and Growth, said:

“We are delighted that this year’s Tour of Britain Women is going to start in Powys, from one of our many beautiful market towns, Welshpool.

“It is a town that cycling enthusiasts will enjoy visiting and the area includes many places of interest, and lots of great places to eat or drink a coffee while taking in the race action and exceptional scenery.”

Councillor Nigel Williams, Lead member for Economy and Regeneration, Wrexham, said:

“Once again the sporting spotlight will be on Wrexham as we continue to be a welcoming location for national events.

“After the success of last year’s Tour of Britain we have another opportunity to showcase the best of our area and this will bring huge benefits to the local economy.

“I know many enthusiasts will be looking forward to the event and to seeing the elite of British cycling as they race through the area. It will give many within the city centre and surrounding areas the opportunity to give the cyclists a warm Welsh welcome to Wrexham as they pass through.”

Professor Steven Broomhead MBE, Warrington Borough Council Chief Executive, said:

“Following the success of the men’s Tour of Britain stage finish in 2021, it’s great news that Warrington will host the pinnacle of the sport again, this time with both a start and finish for the Tour of Britain Women.

“We’re pleased to be playing our part in celebrating some of the world’s greatest cyclists, bringing elite sport back to Warrington once again. It will be a fantastic showcase that will equally generate societal, health and wellbeing benefits.”

Tour of Britain Women

Eamonn O’Rourke, CEO of Manchester Active, said:

“In the year Manchester was successful in becoming the very first European Capital of Cycling, we are delighted to be announced as a host stage for the 2024 Tour of Britain Women.

“Hosting such a prestigious event cements Manchester’s commitment to supporting women’s sport at all levels, and our dedication to encourage more women and girls to participate in sport and physical activity. Having hosted the Men’s Tour of Britain back in 2019 and more recently, the Grand Depart in 2023, it is a real honour to welcome and support the women’s stage to Manchester.

“We're also thrilled that the route will commence from the National Cycling Centre, our world-famous ‘medal factory’ and home of British Cycling, providing a spectacular backdrop for the start of this stage – a unique opportunity only available when hosting cycling events in Manchester.”

Tour of Britain 2022 Information

The Tour of Britain kicks off on September 4 offering the peloton a 1,352.1km of racing across eight stages that concludes on September 11 at The Needles.

Rich in history, it is a prominent stage race that has its origins back in 1945. However, the current version of the Tour of Britain, not organised by SweetSpot, began in 2004.

The multi-day event was registered at the 2.1-level but moved up to the 2.HC status in 2014, and then 2.Pro ranks in 2020, though cancelled that year due to COVID-19. While the event has never made the jump up to WorldTour, it remains as one of the most prestigious events of Great Britain.

Champions of the modern Tour of Britain include last year's winner Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel (2019), Julian Alaphilippe (2018), Lars Boom (2011 and 2017), Steven Cummings (2016) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (2009 and 2015), Bradley Wiggins (2013), and Dylan van Baarle (2014).

Tour of Britain Contenders

Positioned annually in September, the Tour of Britain offers many riders an opportunity to contest late-season stage racing and potentially to prepare for the UCI Road World Championships, which are held in Australia from September 17-25.

Defending champion, Wout van Aert and his team Jumbo-Visma are not scheduled to compete in this year's event, however, the eight-day race will feature 18 teams, including five WorldTour teams Ineos Grenadiers , Movistar , Team DSM , Israel-Premier Tech , and Bora-Hansgrohe .

The organisers of the event are yet to confirm the official start list, but they have revealed several key riders that will be participating.

In his final season before retirement, Australia's Richie Porte will lead Ineos Grenadiers at this year's Tour of Britain. Belgium's Dylan Teuns will lead the GC hopes for his team Israel-Premier Tech. British Cycling will also field a national team led by Connor Swift .

Tour of Britain most successful riders

  • Edvald Boasson Hagen (2009 and 2015) won more than one edition of the modern Tour of Britain, and Lars Boom won twice (2011 and 2017).
  • Wout van Aert won the most recent edition in 2021
  • Julian Alaphilippe and Mathieu van der Poel won the race in 2018 and 2019.

It’s mosty flat to gently rolling roads on the route east of Wrexham. In fact, the only KOM-worthy climb is Eyton Hill, which is hardly a climb at all with its 1.4 kilometres at 2.9%. The summit appears 18.5 kilometres before the finish on Wrexham’s Chester Street.

Exclusive: Men’s Tour of Britain stages cut to seek parity for women’s race

British Cycling aim to increase women’s Tour of Britain to six stages in 2025 in order to create full parity between the two events

Carlos Rodriguez and Stephen Williams

The men’s Tour of Britain will be cut to six stages in 2024 in order to lay the foundations for full parity with its women’s equivalent in the years ahead, Cycling Weekly has learned.

It follows on from the national governing body announcing it will organise both races in house under its new major events arm .

In a statement shared with Cycling Weekly on Wednesday, British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton confirmed the details of the plan and explained that talks were scheduled with the UCI in order to gain permission to scale back the ProTour event.

"We’ve taken the decision to run the 2024 edition of the Tour of Britain Men over six days rather than the current eight, and we intend to seek permission from the UCI to extend the Tour of Britain Women to six days from 2025," he said.

"This would bring full parity to the events after our decision to align the event names this year – something which is fundamental to our vision for major cycling events in Britain."

Cycling Weekly understands that full parity includes the overall length of the race as well as future prize money at this stage.

British Cycling has contacted various men’s teams to gather opinion on the potential reduction of race days. Dutton explained that there was support for the decision for a variety of reasons.

"From discussions with a number of men’s teams over recent weeks there is strong support for the decision, and a feeling that the reduction in the number of stages will provide more compelling and animated racing for riders at the roadside to enjoy," he explained.

Cycling Weekly revealed last month that the shortened Tour of Britain Women is set to start in Wales in June .

Dutton said that full route details regarding the women's race would be made public within the next fortnight.

He said: "Our host towns and cities for the Tour of Britain Women will be announced within the next two weeks, and we are also now very close to finalising our hosts for the Tour of Britain Men.

"Our team has worked around the clock to safeguard the future of the races in an incredibly short timeframe, and we’re also hugely thankful for the commitment of those who have stepped forward to support us this year and those that have pledged their support for 2025 and beyond.

"While 2024 was always going to be about protecting the immediate future of the races, we remain hugely excited by the opportunities to modernise and grow the events in the years ahead."

British Cycling took over the organisation of both events after the collapse of the former promoter, SweetSpot . After being beset by financial difficulty, the firm entered liquidation in January .

Preparations for the rebooted 2024 Tour of Britain Women are advancing, with today’s announcement of the stage hosts setting the stage for a thrilling competition. The Grand Départ is scheduled for Thursday, 6 June, from Welshpool. The previous organisers Sweetspot unfortunately were unable to continue their organisation and British Cycling had to take over the running of the Women’s Tour from 2024 for the foreseeable future.

Tour of Britain Women Stages Announced as Countdown to 2024 Grand Depart Begins

2024 Tour of Britain Route Women

The race kicks off in Welshpool, a town celebrated in cycling lore. Notably, it is close to where the men’s Tour of Britain featured a dramatic finish on the Great Orme in 2021, won by Wout Van Aert in a memorable sprint against Julian Alaphilippe, offering cyclists a scenic challenge beside the sea.

The first stage propels the riders from Welshpool to Llandudno, ensuring a demanding start. The second stage is a circuit in Wrexham, a town enveloped by the beautiful yet rugged terrain of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley.

The peloton will then move to England for the third stage in Warrington, which promises flatter roads suitable for sprinters. This town previously hosted the men’s race in 2021, celebrating Ethan Hayter’s victory.

Concluding in Greater Manchester, the final stage will depart from the National Cycling Centre, traversing tough regional climbs before culminating in Leigh. This stage is a highlight of Manchester’s European Capital of Cycling celebrations.

‘Monumental effort’ means Women’s Tour of Britain goes ahead in 2024

  • Condensed four-stage race begins in Welshpool on 6 June
  • Lizzie Deignan: ‘I’m grateful to the people who have pulled it off’

British Cycling has named the host towns for this summer’s Tour of Britain Women after what has been described as “monumental effort” to make sure the race goes ahead.

Ten weeks after the Guardian reported the governing body would organise the race in-house following the collapse of SweetSpot group, the outline of the route has been unveiled, with an opening stage starting in Welshpool and finishing in Llandudno on 6 June.

Stage two will start and finish in Wrexham, stage three will begin and end in Warrington, and the final stage will start outside the National Cycling Centre in Manchester and finish in Leigh on 9 June.

This year’s race will be limited to four stages – down from six for the previous edition of the Women’s Tour in 2022 – due to the time restrictions British Cycling has faced, but there is an ambition to grow in the future.

Rod Ellingworth, the former deputy team principal of the Ineos Grenadiers who joined as race director last month, said: “It’s been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year’s Tour of Britain Women.”

The governing body’s chief executive, Jon Dutton, admitted there had been “many” moments in the last 10 weeks where he feared the race might not take place. “I dare say with 52 days to go there will be a few more bumps in the road,” Dutton said.

“We’ve had local authorities, start towns and finish towns who’ve said: ‘We’re in’ and then subsequently said: ‘We’re not in’ and that’s difficult. We’ve always had the idea of a condensed, compact race and when one pulls out that’s an issue across the board.”

British Cycling is also working on the men’s Tour of Britain, with that race due to take place over six days in September rather than the usual eight.

Dutton added that British Cycling is continuing to seek further investment for what he described as two “expensive races”. Much of the money will come from hosting fees and broadcast contracts, close to being agreed but not yet finalised, but there is a need for more commercial revenue.

All six of the UK’s UCI Continental level teams have signed up for the women’s race, and the former world champion Lizzie Deignan will swap her Lidl-Trek jersey for Britain colours to lead a national squad.

“Sometimes it’s easy to underestimate how much it takes to put on a race so I’m really grateful to the people who have pulled it off against the odds,” Deignan said.

The 35-year-old wants to use the race to prepare for a busy summer which will hopefully include the Paris Olympics, but admitted the broken arm she suffered in a crash at last month’s Tour of Flanders had come at a bad time.

“The main concern for me is it’s during Olympic selection time so I’ve missed a good chunk of races I was peaking for in terms of getting selected,” said Deignan. “There’s plenty of time until the Olympics itself to get fit and ready, but selection is harder than it’s ever been so it’s obviously bad timing.”

Officials confirmed details of the rebooted and rebranded Tour of Britain Women after a wild 10-week scramble to keep the race on the 2024 calendar.

Event organizer British Cycling revealed Monday a four-stage route from Wales and into Manchester for the inaugural edition of the race after its predecessor six-day “Women’s Tour” was effectively shuttered due to sponsorship shortfalls.

“It’s been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year’s Tour of Britain Women,” said newly appointed race director and former Team Sky/Ineos mastermind Rod Ellingworth.

“The race will take in four competitive and challenging routes, some challenging climbing in Wales and what I’m sure will be brilliant crowds on the roadside throughout,” Ellingworth said.

The news comes as a boon for the ailing British grassroots racing scene and gives hope for the future of the formerly named Women’s Tour.

The previous event was one of the OG stage-races of the Women’s WorldTour and counts Marianne Vos, Elisa Longo Borghini, and Demi Vollering on its roll of honor.

The first Tour of Britain Women rolls out from Welshpool in mid-Wales on June 6. Full stage details are due to be revealed in coming weeks.

“There’s clearly so much support and fondness for the race, both at home and further afield,” said Lidl-Trek racer Lizzie Deignan, who won the GC of the Women’s Tour in both 2016 and 2019.

“The four stage hosts deserve credit for their commitment to women’s racing and for helping to make the race happen, and I’m sure that together we can put on a brilliant show in June,” Deignan said.

It’s all-change this coming season for the Women’s WorldTour race and its partner 2.Pro-ranked Tour of Britain Men.

Both races faced shutdown at the turn of the year when former promoter Sweetspot entered liquidation  and new commercial partners could not be found.

National governing body British Cycling stepped in as organizer of both races at the final hour and established “British Cycling Events”.

Former Team Sky / Ineos Grenadiers staffer Ellingworth was appointed as race director soon afterward, and officials scrambled to design courses for both its men’s and women’s races.

Both events were shortened for 2024 due to both logistical and financial reasons.

The Tour of Britain Men  will take place across six days this September.

The formerly named “Tour of Britain” typically serves as a key tune-up for many riders heading to road worlds, with Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, and Julian Alaphilippe among recent GC winners on British roads.

British Cycling intends to bring both the Women’s and men’s tours to six days in the future as it continues to seek sponsorship partners.

Wales to host opening stages for rebranded Tour of Britain Women in June

B ritish Cycling announced today the host cities stretching from Welshpool to Manchester for a "monumental effort" to launch this year's Tour of Britain Women , formerly known as Women's Tour. The rebranded event, which was cancelled last year and has had a turbulent path to a rebranding by British Cycling, will begin in 10 weeks, scheduled for June 6-9 as a Women's WorldTour event.

"Our primary focus has been to deliver a safe and competitive race in 2024, and while there is still a great deal of work to do, we remain every bit as determined to harness the race's spotlight to make a real impact in the communities which it touches," said Jon Dutton, CEO of British Cycling.

"We know that it is a vision which resonates strongly in the positive conversations we've been having with prospective commercial partners and hosts which continues to be extremely encouraging."

It was two weeks ago that British Cycling confirmed the men's Tour of Britain would be set up with six stages, down from a total of eight days contested in 2023. It was the goal of the governing body to have "parity to the two national tours, following the alignment of the event names in 2024", a press release noted. The dates have not been confirmed on the UCI calendar at the time of this report.

Last spring the Women's Tour was cancelled as then-organiser, SweetSpot Group Limited, which held the licence to manage both the men's and women's race, was unable to sign sponsorships needed to support the race. The men's race proceeded in September, won by Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma).

Then in November, British Cycling cancelled their deal with SweetSpot as it came to light that licence fees of £700,000 were still unpaid, according to the governing body, which holds the rights for the Tour of Britain brand. Cycling Weekly also reported that the Isle of Wight council was looking for £350,000 from SweetSpot for money owed when the final stages they were to host at the 2022 Tour of Britain were cancelled due to the death of the Queen.

Both the Tour of Britain and Women's Tour had been removed from the UCI's 2024 calendar, the women scheduled to race in June and the men the first week in September. British Cycling came to the rescue and reclaimed operations for both races, rebranding the women's race but not confirming other details. In March, they named Rod Ellingworth as race director of the Tour of Britain, his first role since departing the management of Ineos Grenadiers during the winter.

"It's been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year's Tour of Britain Women," said Rod Ellingworth, who was announced as Tour of Britain Race Director in March.

"The race will take in four competitive and challenging routes, some challenging climbing in Wales and what I'm sure will be brilliant crowds on the roadside throughout."

The first half of the four-day stage race will be held in Wales, with Welshpool serving as the host for the Grand Départ on Thursday, June 6, with a northerly route taking in the picturesque seaside town of Llandudno. Wrexham takes up the reins for the stage 2 start and finish, taking in a series of challenging climbs in the dramatic Clwydian Range and Dee Valley.

Warrington, in north-west England, will host stage 3 and a flatter route for the sprinters.  The finale will take place in Manchester, with the start from the National Cycling Centre and a finish in Leigh. Full route details for each of the four stages will be announced in the coming weeks.

Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) won the last edition of the Women's Tour in 2022, with a one-second margin over Grace Brown (FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope).

Briton Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek) is a two-time winner of the Women's Tour, in 2016 and 2019, and was pleased to have a Women's WorldTour event return to Great Britain.

"It's always special to race in Britain, and I'm so pleased to have two top-level stage races to look forward to on home soil as I ramp up my preparations for a busy summer ahead," she said in a British Cycling press release.

"There's clearly so much support and fondness for the race, both at home and further afield. The four stage hosts deserve credit for their commitment to women's racing and for helping to make the race happen, and I'm sure that together we can put on a brilliant show in June."
