New Amsterdam Theatre History

Completed in 1903 and named for the New Amsterdam settlement that eventually became New York, the New Amsterdam Theatre was one of the very first Broadway theaters to open in the Theater District of Times Square.

While the first show to open at the New Amsterdam Theatre was a 1903 production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream , it eventually became home to the Ziegfeld Follies , which ran for more than a decade from 1913 to 1927.

With its Beaux-Arts exterior and glamorous Art Nouveau interior, other shows that premiered at the New Amsterdam Theatre in its earliest decades of operation included Irving Berlin and Harry B. Smith’s Watch Your Step , the Gershwin brothers’ Rosalie , a 1933 musical adaptation of Alice in Wonderland and Dietz and Schwartz’s Revenge with Music .

Here’s a fun fact: the theater has long been rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Olive Thomas, a former Ziegfeld girl turned silent film star who died under questionable circumstances while on her honeymoon with husband Jack Pickford.

In 1937, the New Amsterdam was sold as a movie theater, which remained in operation through the early 1980s — though by the ’70s, the area surrounding Times Square had become run down and crime-ridden, prompting the 42nd Street Development Project to announce plans for its revitalization before ultimately leasing the building to The Walt Disney Company.

On January 10, 1980, the theater was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in the mid-’90s, Disney led the charge in renovating the theater through its research and development arm, Walt Disney Imagineering. Disney officially completed the theater’s restoration on April 2, 1997. Later that year, as its first Broadway production in more than half a century, The Lion King opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre in November 1997 and ran for nearly a decade there until it moved to the Minskoff Theatre in 2006.

The New Amsterdam then welcomed Mary Poppins to its stage, with the practically perfect nanny doling out spoonfuls of sugar through 2013 for 2,619 performances. Since 2014, the theater — which is owned by the City of New York, and operated by the Disney Theatrical Group — has been home to the original Broadway production of Aladdin .

New Amsterdam Theatre (Broadway) History

On October 26, 1903, the opening of the New Amsterdam Theatre was a highly anticipated New York City event. Designers Henry Herts and Hugh Tallent set out to build the most spectacular theatre in New York. They were so confident in their endeavor that they designed the theatre's interior specifically for her inaugural production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The following morning's review in The New York Times spoke little of the play, but hailed the New Amsterdam Theatre as "The House Beautiful," a nickname that still holds true today. Over 113 years later, the New Amsterdam is the oldest operating theatre of Broadway and an official New York City landmark.

The New Amsterdam Theatre closed as a Broadway theatre due to the effects of The Great Depression in 1936, and reopened as a movie theater in 1937. Eventually, the theatre fell into disrepair and was left unused for many years. The  Walt Disney  Company signed a 99-year lease on the New Amsterdam Theatre (it is now home to the Disney Theatrical offices!) in the early 90s and began a massive restoration on the building, bringing it back to its original glory. In 1997, the New Amsterdam reopened with the premiere of the Hercules film and a limited engagement of a concert version of King David, before bringing The Lion King to the stage.

Disney on Broadway Tour—Behind the Magic at the New Amsterdam Theatre

new amsterdam theatre tours

This highly exclusive, behind-the-scenes Broadway tour takes you on a guided journey through New York City’s theater district, along with an in-depth, VIP look at Disney’s landmark New Amsterdam Theatre, led by its in-house historian.

We’ve all got items on our bucket list, but “going to Disney” and “seeing a Broadway musical” are found pretty frequently on many of our do-before-we-die dockets. Fortunately, you can nearly knock two items off your list with one trip, since while you can’t be in New York and Florida at once, the extraordinary entertainers at Disney put on countless Broadway productions every year, and tickets are available far in advance. But, if you’ve already had the pleasure of taking in a Disney show (or several) in the Big Apple, it might seem like there’s not much else to see in New York City ’s theatre district. Well, allow us to let you in on a little secret: There’s more —a lot more. Enter: the Disney on Broadway Tour—Behind the Magic at the New Amsterdam Theatre .

new amsterdam theatre tours

But before all of that, an extremely knowledgeable member of Walks’s Broadway Insider team will lead you on an in-depth tour of New York City ’s historic theater district. Get ready to stop at some of the most famous theaters, not just in the Big Apple, but in the world , where legendary performances garner massive audiences and global acclaim. You’ll take a deep dive into the rich history of the area and lap up the lore of pivotal moments in the annals of the stage, such as the famed Ziegfeld Follies, a series of American musical performances which turned Broadway into the bustling theatrical mecca as we know it.

As if that weren’t enough, your personal Broadway Insider—whose team is composed of some of the best actors, crew members, and theater managers in the business—have first-hand experience of how many people it takes to put on a show and what it’s really like behind the curtain. Expect to hear everything from the sheer scale of an average Broadway production to almost unbelievable tales (like how a goat once fell from the roof of one of these very theaters). But more than anything, you’ll gain a deep, exclusive appreciation for just how much effort goes into each and every Broadway performance.

You’ll also get to know the most popular spots where the cast and crew of some of your favorite Broadway musicals like to hang out. Until then, though, take a look below at all of the fun and exciting destinations you’ll check out on your way to the uber-exclusive, VIP tour, Behind the Magic at the New Amsterdam Theatre.

NYC Theater District Destinations

new amsterdam theatre tours

  • Times Square — Ask any old-timer from New York City (or your Broadway Insider team member) what Times Square “used to be like,” and you’ll be regaled with a rags-to-riches story of how Disney was instrumental in changing the fate of Times Square from a notorious red-light district into what it is today.
  • Duffy Square — Named after Francis P. Duffy, a Catholic priest and military chaplain, Duffy Square is situated between 45th and 47th Streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Today, it’s known for the TKTS theater tickets booth, where customers can score Broadway and Off-Broadway tickets at seriously discounted prices.
  • Sardi’s — No trip to the theater district is complete without visiting Sardi’s—a gorgeous restaurant on West 44th Street—to see over 1,000 character portraits of famous Broadway celebrities. (Plus, it’s the very spot where they came up with the idea for the Tony Awards!)
  • Rodgers & Hammerstein Way — At the corner of 44th Street and Eighth Avenue sits Rodgers & Hammerstein Way, named after the well-known songwriting team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. There, you’ll find the St. James Theatre, where the pair made their Broadway debut with a little musical called Oklahoma!
  • Shubert Alley — Built-in 1913 for the Shubert family—who are largely responsible for establishing the Broadway district itself—this unassuming alley was where the family would park their cars, and where actors would gather while waiting to audition for parts.
  • You’ll also get to swing by and admire the beautiful facades of the world-renowned Marriott Marquis Theatre , Majestic Theatre , and American Airlines Theatre . Too many theaters to remember? No worries: By the end of the exclusive Broadway tour, you’ll be able to identify all of NYC’s most historically and musically important theaters with ease. Who knows—maybe you’ll be the one leading the next tour!

About the theater.

The New Amsterdam was the first theater designed by Herts & Tallant, who subsequently became great theater architects of the early twentieth century.

The partners met in Paris while studying at the École des Beaux-Arts. The New Amsterdam is a rare example of the art nouveau style in New York and one of the greatest examples of it in the country. The theater was built for producers Marc Klaw and A. L. Erlanger and became the home of the Ziegfeld Follies. At the producers’ request, the site incorporated two performing spaces with a ten-story office tower to house their varied theatrical interests. The theater originally featured a rooftop theater and Ziegfeld presented his Midnight Frolic , a nightclub revue, there. Very popular in its time, it afforded a spectacular view of New York. The interior of the theater was filled with oversized curvilinear designs of fruits, flowers, and vines that made the large theater feel more intimate. The architects also incorporated many innovative features including a sophisticated ventilation system for heating and cooling and a vacuum cleaning system. By 1937 the New Amsterdam was the last legitimate theater on 42nd Street. It later became a movie theater and fell into disrepair. In 1992, under the aegis of the New 42nd Street, a nonprofit organization responsible for the revitalization of theaters, the New Amsterdam attracted the attention of Michael Eisner, then the CEO of Disney, who purchased the theater and hired Hugh Hardy to restore it to its original state. It reopened in 1997 with The Lion King and what was once the rooftop theater now houses the offices of Disney Theatrical.

Theater Architect

Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, Columbia University

Hugh Tallant

1869-1952 Born in Nantucket, Massachusetts, in 1869, Hugh Tallant received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Harvard University.

He attended the École des Beaux-Arts on Harvard's Kirkland Fellowship, where he won the 1896 Grande Médaille d'Honneur for graduating first in the class, and met his future partner, Henry B. Herts. They opened offices in Paris and New York in 1900. Tallant focused on the architecture and decorative design of their projects. Herts & Tallant are also known for the design of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. After the partnership dissolved in 1911, Tallant became a member of Lord, Hewlett & Tallant until 1916. He served as an army captain in World War I and worked on his own after the war, retiring to Savannah in the 1930s.

Henry B. Herts

1871-1933 Henry B. Herts was known as a technical innovator and inventive designer. Born in New York, he was the son of Henry B. Herts of the Herts Brothers firm of decorators. He originally went to City College but left before graduation to work in the office of architect Bruce Price. Herts eventually graduated from Columbia University in 1893 then traveled to Europe to study architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts and the universities of Rome and Heidelberg.

Herts is best known for his partnership with Hugh Tallant. Although, Herts & Tallant were well-known theater architects, the partnership dissolved in 1912, and Herts continued designing with his assistant Herbert J. Krapp and on his own. Herts pioneered the use of steel cantilevers to eliminate the problem of blocked sightlines from pillars supporting the balcony. He also served as architect for the Playground Commission of New York City and helped improve fire codes.
