Delfin II on the Amazon river

The 14-cabin luxury riverboat, Delfin II, seduces travelers with its comfortable, contemporary style and 5-star Relais Chateaux service – indeed it and its sister ships are the only vessels in the Amazon with this accreditation of excellence. Departing from the port of Nauta, deep in the Peruvian Amazon, immerse yourself in the vessel’s casual sophistication and embark on a truly exemplary expedition cruise along the Amazon River.

Life Aboard The Delfin II

The Delfin II invites the outdoors in, thanks to the panoramic windows in every room. Light, airy spaces, with soft wood tones and neutral hues, feel chic and let you enjoy picturesque views from every angle. While onboard, you are invited to relax, unwind and watch as the Amazon slips past the windows. Snuggle into a plush couch to read or play a board game in the lecture room. You will return to this space for informative presentations from the ships’ naturist guides to help you understand the area’s wildlife and cultures.

Quench your thirst with a local beer or craft cocktail in the third deck’s open-air lounge. There, the bartender is always ready to serve, and the room encourages refreshing breezes to flow through. In the spa, massages, and therapies highlight the wellness philosophies of the local cultures. If you are looking for a more active pastime, use the onboard kayaks and paddle boards, or head to the exercise room for some yoga or cardio.

Excursions From Delfin II Cruises

After transferring from Iquitos, you will board the Delfin II in Nauta and set sail for either a four- or five-day cruise that blends downtime aboard the ship with soft adventure activities on the water and on land. While traveling through the wilderness, optional activities led by naturalist guides will encourage you to explore the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

In the Amazon Natural Park, take a nature walk to learn about the area’s medicinal plants. Then, visit the tiny and seldom-visited village of Yachay. This remote outpost is home to Carola, a native Shaman who spends her life serving as a healer and spiritual guide to the village. Spend some time with Carola, and her wood-carver husband, to learn about the ways of life in the Amazon. You will also have the opportunity to visit a local schoolhouse, search for birds and monkeys, and observe river dolphins.

Authentic Cuisine On All Delfin II Amazon Cruises

Peruvian cuisine embodies the country’s cultural diversity, and the team of the Delfin II prides themselves on bringing authentic flavors and carefully prepared Creole dishes to the ships’ dining room. Locally-sourced and wild ingredients infuse the menu with local flair. The experience is enhanced by handmade plate ware, locally-crafted table décor, and live instrumental music courtesy of the ship’s crew. Better yet, you will always enjoy a show along with dinner as you watch pink river dolphins, flocks of birds, and local villagers out of the dining room’s panoramic windows.

The ability to pick and choose activities, and two sets of family-friendly interconnecting rooms make Delfin II cruises a flexible getaway for every generation. Plus, the all-inclusive package allows you to let go of every care and soak in the serenity of the Amazon.

The early morning hours are the best time of day to watch birds, observe their special displays and listen to their songs. Full exterior of bow of Delfin II riverboat on the Amazon River

The Delfin II is an exclusive home base for Amazon River cruising. This luxury, 28-guest riverboat combines comfort and grace effortlessly with the wilderness of the Amazon. Expect world-class hospitality, fine dining and great company aboard.

Why Sail Aboard Delfin II

Choose the Delfin II for her operator’s local way of doing things, for sourcing local foods and hiring local guides. If luxury and authenticity are important to you, the Delfin II is the perfectly sized river vessel bringing influence and cultural awareness to every cruise through the Peruvian Amazon.

AdventureSmith founder and president  Todd Smith  was one of the first people to see the Delfin II under construction in the busy port of Iquitos in 2009. Her hull had just been built and huge steel deck and wall plates were beginning to form cabins on the upper decks. He was amazed at the resourcefulness and ingenuity that went in to building what has become one of the finest ships built in this remote port city. A huge palapa, perhaps 50 feet wide and 150 feet long, covered the work site to protect it from weather because Aldo Machiavello, the owner of Delfin Amazon Cruises, learned quickly that if it rained, which it frequently does in Iquitos, the workers would simply go home. Today, the Delfin II remains one of the most innovative and sustainable ships in the Amazon and is the first with a full fleet of kayaks for every guest to enjoy.

AdventureSmith Explorations has been aboard the Delfin II firsthand. Read our dedicated Delfin Amazon Review  written by our specialists, or consult this page further for a detailed description of the river boat, including ship specs, deck plan, cabin images and photo gallery and current links to all  Delfin II Amazon River cruise itineraries , dates and rates. What Our Travelers Say About the Delfin II

Delfin II had great guides. They could spot things I never would have seen. I wish we had stayed on it for a full week instead of the short four days. All other hotels were above expectations.

The naturalists were excellent, full of information and willing to answer any questions--dumb or otherwise--we asked. The entire trip was a wonderful experience.

The entire trip was awesome. Delfin II was great. Wish we had stayed on it for a full week instead of the short four days. All other hotels were above expectations.

Meals Review

I think on meals, a little more explanation would be helpful. Included hotel meals were a nice surprise as I didn't realize as many were included as they were.

Crew & Guides Review

Delfin II had great guides. They could spot things I never would have seen.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Taylor was great. Setting up this trip was simple and easy and she was helpful with any and all my questions. Excellent management of all travel plans. On top of it when our flight was cancelled from Iquitos to Lima. Only hiccups were in the Lima airport. That place is crazy and we barely found our guide the first time and completely missed them the second.

We went to the Upper Amazon with a lay-over in Quito.  Everything went perfectly (except for a cancelled flight on the way home) and the entire trip was a wonderful experience.

Accommodations Review

Absolutely first class.

The were all exceptional.  The naturalists were excellent, full of information and willing to answer any questions--dumb or otherwise--we asked.  I learned a lot and I think the others did, too.

The crew/staff on both ships were excellent, as well.  The attention to detail on both ships was remarkable and everyone, from the top managers on down, went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of.

Could not have been better. The chef was exceptional at providing food that reflected the local cultures, yet catering to American (or Australian in some cases) tastes.  Every meal was fun and something of an adventure.

In addition to providing information, they were available for any questions we had.  AdventureSmith was great and answered any questions I had. They made all of our transfer arrangements and they were seamless!  Really well done.  We worked through Exito Travel for our flights to and from South America, and they were excellent, especially in the face of the problems with the reservation systems caused by the merger between American and US Airways.

Delfin 2 Amazon Itineraries

Delfin 2 amazon review, review of delfin 2 amazon.

The Peru-based Delfin Amazon Cruises is a small houseboat cruise ship operator. The company owns and operates two Amazon-deployed riverboats - Delfin II (2009-built) and Delfin III (2015-built). The vessels are same-designed (sisterships), with the newer Delfin 3 being slightly larger as to passenger capacity. Both ships are similar by design (exterior and interior), onboard amenities (dining, entertainment), services and staterooms (sizes, amenities).

As itineraries, both Delfin 2 and Delfin 3 cruise on tributaries leading out of Amazon River Basin in Peru. Both riverboats are designed with floor-ceiling and wall-to-wall windows to allow passengers to enjoy the unique rainforest scenery without obstruction.

History - construction and ownership

The fleetmates Delfin 2 and Delfin 3 are fully-owned by Delfin Amazon Cruises (Peruvian company established by Aldo Macchiavello and his wife Lissy Urteaga), in 2006. Aldo runs the firm, while Lissy (who is an interior designer) takes responsibility for the interior decorations of the ships. She also plans the daily activities along the itineraries and makes long-range dining plans - together with the ship's Master Chef.

RV Delfin II Amazon cruise ship

Internationally, RV Delfin II Amazon cruise ship is represented/chartered by Lindblad Expeditions  - a premium, small-ship cruise company that operates voyages via partnership with National Geographic (NatGeo, a US non-profit institution for science and education).

Another charterer of the Delfin Amazon riverboats is Abercrombie & Kent (aka A&K Travel) - UK-based luxury travel company.

Expedition equipment includes 10-person skiffs (per cruise ship). Passengers can swim directly from the skiffs by use of the convenient swim ladder. Delfin 2 and Delfin 3 are the only Peru Amazon cruise ships to have their own fleet of kayaks. All river cruises have a Lindblad-NatGeo certified photo instructor on board.

Most Popular Peru Trips & Tours

Peru is a diverse country. With beaches, mountains, rainforest and desert, there is no off-season. But it does pay to know a bit about where you're going, and what you'll need on your Peru tour: The Andes - Though officially part of the dry season, April and May are considered the Andean spring, while June through October marks the Andean summer. Mid-day temperatures range from 70 to 80 F in the sun. Nighttime temperatures in Cusco range in the 40s F and can dip into the 30s F. Weather is usually clear in the morning with clouds accumulating in the afternoon. Rain can happen in any season, so quality rain gear is essential. The Amazon - A rainforest environment, the Peruvian Amazon has varied weather conditions and frequent unpredictable rain showers. It is generally hot and humid during the day with more comfortable temperatures through the night. Daytime high temperatures average between 82° and 93° F, and the average nighttime low is between 62° and 73°. Nevertheless, in some areas cold fronts can sweep into the Amazon and push daytime high temperatures down to 50° F and nighttime lows to 43° F. Any time of year, one should always be prepared for cooler temperatures and rain showers. Around 80% of the annual average 79 inches of rainfall occurs during the rainy season (December through March) when heavy rain may continue for hours or days. Delfin II (5D/4N)

delfin ii amazon river cruise

I have traveled many places in the world but the trip put together by Southern Explorations may well be the best. The amazing biology we saw on the Galapagos and in the Amazon, wonderful guides both on the Eclipse and at Sacha lodge, excellent food, and great coordination of the different parts of the trip made for an incredible journey.   -Marilyn Parsons, USA (Galapagos Island Cruise & Amazon)

We had an outstanding time on our Galapagos Adventure + stay at the Sacha Lodge. Everything ran seamlessly and our guides were fun and knowledgeable. It was the perfect mix of activity, education, and relaxation! We also highly recommend the Sacha Lodge. - Eric & Leah Monson, USA (Galapagos Island Land & Amazon)

Itineraries & Pricing

4 night itinerary.

Day 1     Wednesday     Arrive to Iquitos / Begin the Cruise

Upon arrival to the Iquitos International Airport, you will be met by the Delfin II’s guides and transported by bus to the city of Nauta, where you will board the ship to start your cruise. After check-in, you will have dinner, meet the crew and your fellow passengers, and have time to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Day 2     Thursday     Belluda Caño / Dorado River

Today will start with an early gourmet breakfast, after which you will prepare for your first excursion in the Pacaya Simiria National Reserve. During the wet season (Dec – May), you will explore Belluda Stream by skiff, from which you are likely to spot parrots, macaws and monkeys. You may also see Morpho butterflies, and various species of hawks, including the noisy “laughing falcon,” named for its loud falsetto call. During the dry Season (Jun – Nov), you will have the chance to do some hiking at Belluda Caño, where you can explore two different kinds of ecosystems: “flooded forest” and “terra firme” forest. Here you may see snail kites, black-tailed ant birds, manikins, tanagers, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, nun birds, orioles, blackbirds, and pygmy marmosets. Your hike will take you to a lagoon filled with endangered and unique fresh water fish, where you will explore the waters in a dugout canoe. After your excursion you will return to the Delfin II for lunch. In the afternoon you will head to Dorado River in the skiffs, with a good chance of seeing gray and pink river dolphins and possibly swimming with them. You may also spot snail kites, festive parrots, endangered scarlet macaws, olive-spotted hummingbirds, Amazonian parrotlets, iguanas, squirrel monkeys, and wood creepers.

Day 3     Friday     Atun Poza Lake / Rio Pacaya

After breakfast you will head out for your morning excursion. During the wet season (Dec – May), you will explore Atun Poza by skiff, where you are likely to see egrets, herons, hawks, long-legged neo-tropical cormorants, loud horned screamers. You will also have a chance to explore other black water lagoons linked to this huge lake, where wattled jacanas can be found along with a variety of spiders, grasshoppers, dragonflies, butterflies, moths, and beetles living along the freshwater swamps and marshes. You may also see social spiders and how their webs embrace huge parts of a tree. During the dry Season (Jun – Nov), you will go hiking at Atun Poza, passing through tropical rainforest with emergent trees and canopy trees reaching up to 55 meters in height. You may see giant otters, and this is an excellent location for spotting birds such as the bluish-fronted jacamar, collared trogons, and red capped cardinals. After lunch back aboard the Delfin II, you will continue up the Puinahua River towards the Pacaya River, in the heart of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, for further exploration of the largest protected wetland reserve in the world. Aboard the skiffs, you will explore the spectacular rainforest wilderness while searching for different species of monkeys, such as small family groups of red howler monkeys. You will be able to watch the sunset over the river, and once darkness falls you will start your night safari in search of night herons, pauraques, spectacled owls, fish bats, and the spectacled and black caimans that live in the water.

Day 4     Saturday     Caro Curahuayte Lagoon / Jungle Hike

This morning you will board the skiffs and head to Caro Curahuayte Lake. During the wet season you will be able to do some fishing, mainly for piranhas. During the rainy season the forest is flooded and many trees flower and bear fruit, tempting the piranhas and other fish to enter and eat. During the dry season you will explore in the skiffs and search for shore-birds. When the river is very low, broad white sandy beaches emerge and river islands form, creating a special ecosystem that harbors sandpipers, terns, black skimmers, egrets, jabirus, wood storks, and kingfishers. During lunch back aboard the ship, the Delfin II will navigate back down the Puinahua River toward Iquitos. In the afternoon your will visit the Yanallpa Community, a chance to interact with local villagers, observe their unique way of life, and learn about the local fruit trees and how they are harvested. Back aboard the ship in the late afternoon, you will continue down the Puinahua River toward the Ucayali River. Tonight you will have a farewell dinner and live music performed by the Delfin II staff and crew.

Day 5     Sunday     Puerto Miguel Community / Manatee Rescue Center / Return to Lima

This morning after breakfast you will board the skiffs and head to the village of Puerto Miguel to meet local villagers and learn about their culture, traditions and folklore. After lunch back aboard the ship, you will disembark at Nauta, where a bus will be waiting to take you back to Iquitos. En route you will stop at the Manatee Rescue Center for a brief visit before continuing on to the airport for your flight back to Lima.

3 Night Itinerary

Day 1     Sunday     Arrive to Iquitos / Begin the Cruise

Day 2     Monday     Belluda Caño or Yanallpa / Dorado River

Day 3     Tuesday     Rio Pacaya / Atun Poza Lake

This morning will start early, and breakfast will be served onboard the skiffs as you head into the heart of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve for further exploration of the largest protected wetland reserve in the world. The wildlife tends to be very active in the early morning, and you are likely to see parrots, macaws, toucans, kingfishers, black collared hawks, southern swallows, white winged swallows, and manikins, plus troops of squirrel monkeys and small family groups of red howler monkeys. As the sun starts to heat up, you will continue along the shores of the Pacaya River, and breakfast will be served as you float amidst a favored dolphin feeding spot. After breakfast, you can jump in the water for a refreshing morning swim. Back aboard the Delfin II, you will enjoy another gourmet lunch as the ship navigates back down the Puinahua River toward Nauta. In the afternoon you will explore Atun Poza. Calls/emails not returned, wrong information and questions answered incorrectly. We came very close to not going because of the “front end.” We did go and had a great time. That being said, rooms are very small, limited space for storage and my room was extremely noisy. Read more Written April 11, 2024
  • God_699 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Unforgettable and incredible Absolutely incredible! Me and my partner are travelling through Peru and the Caribbean for my 30th and decided to book this tour (it is still available to book online). Hands down, this was the most amazing experience of my life! On the first day, we were picked up from our accommodation and visited the Yagua indigenous tribe, the Fundo Pedrito animal sanctuary and went out for a jungle excursion. At the tribe's village you take small presents for the children of the tribe (sweets and colouring pencils purchased from Iquitos port), which they were very excited about. We bought a couple bracelets made from Anaconda teeth and local berries/ seeds as a little memento, got to try our hands at some target practice with a traditional dart blow gun, and took part in a small ceremony. At the animal reserve we saw Macaw's, Caiman (which we got to feed), Anaconda (which we got to go inside the enclosure with), and giant Paiche (huge fresh water fish which we also fed and got to touch). Then, once at the Avatar Lodge, we went out for a jungle excursion where we learned all about the Flora and Fauna of the jungle, including very useful survival tactics such as how to use termites to keep mosquitoes away (very useful and effective!). Day 2 we went out looking for pink and grey river dolphin (beautiful, majestic creatures!), fished for Pirhana (however only one small one was actually caught on this occasion so it was put back), and then got to swim in the amazon river - which was a bucket list item for me. We went out for another jungle excursion looking for finger monkeys (which we found after only a short while), and then lazed around in the pool to cool off before going for a night time jungle excursion and saw Tarantula and many other large Spiders, loads of lizards, frogs, and other critters - the jungle comes to life at night!! Day 3 we went out for a sunrise boat trip to see the dolphin once more (early morning is a much better time to see them as they are hunting for fish), and then went to a monkey sanctuary; prior to the trip I was not overly fussed about seeing the monkeys but it was such an interactive experience as they climb all over you and you feed them, and it was just great, I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. Finally, we did the Mirador zipline and jungle swing experience (which is like GoApe on steroids), and then finally, we chilled in the pool once more to calm our nerves before, sadly, leaving to return to Iquitos. I have to take the time to give a HUGE shout out to Alex, our tour guide, who was one of the most wonderful people we have ever met. His knowledge and expertise were priceless and seemingly endless; he is such a kind and interesting individual and made our trip truly unforgettable. He has some mind blowing stories and goes out of his way to make sure your trip is an unforgettable one. I also have to shout out the chef's while we stayed at Avatar Lodge, as the food they cooked us fresh each day, most of which was from local plants/ tree's, was delicious and far exceeded our expectations. Also, there is a cute dog who lives at the lodge and another couple more that live in the jungle, all of each are so lovely and friendly! 1000/10 would recommend to anyone with a passion for nature and adventure. I would absolutely love to return here as often as I can! Read more Written April 3, 2024
  • Hannahrobin995 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Alex went above and beyond This was the most incredible experience! Alex, our tour guide, knew everything about The Amazon and more! He ensured we were safe but still allowed us to get up close and person with what the jungle had to offer. His passion for the aminals and creatures was very inspiring, he made the trip for me, genuinely amazing guy, with some great stories to tell. The accodation fed us very well, big portions, we didn't need to use our snacks, the food was amazing! The rooms were cosy, the swimming pool was right outside our room and was very much needed, and kept clean. The activities were great, we went to the aminal sanctuary, met the indigenous tribe, went swimming in the Amazon river, went pirhana finishing, saw dolphin's, went on a night walk, watched the sunrise and saw the river dolphin's. I will remember this trip for the rest of my life. To see the lack of reviews is shocking! If you're thinking about going here, do it!! Read more Written April 3, 2024
  • 818alliep 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles WOW! I absolutely cannot recommend the Aqua Nera enough! Our experience was a 10/10 all around from the excursions, to the dining, to the staff. Jordano was one of the best bartenders I have ever seen (and I’m from Nashville)! His knowledge and friendliness helped make our trip unforgettable. Maximo was an incredible server who shared so much of his knowledge of the Amazon with us! We were so grateful for everything he taught us. Neycer often led our excursions, and he did a fantastic job! He could spot animals that we couldn’t see even after a few minutes of searching with him pointing directly at them! • LesleyYang 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience with a couple notes in the review The service is 5 stars with very attentive and one to one ratio of crew to guest. The food is the highlight with special attention to Peruvian and local ingredients. When the weather is good the excursion is also a lot of fun! We did the four days cruise they also offer longer ones. We had a great time and would recommend to others. However, because the experience is not exactly cheap you should be aware: - when the weather is not good meaning raining and it rains fairly frequent as you can imagine, the animals are NOT out and you do not have much to do onboard (the boat is not equipped with any entertainment) - it does not have like professor or other distinguished naturalists onboard. The guides are mainly local and offers great guidance to casual observers (us). However, if you are some avid animal enthusiasts I suspect you may find it a bit superficial - the rooms and indoor areas are perfectly comfortable but you will smell something in any area not fully enclosed or air conditioned (enter the doorway). There are some wears and tears of the boat but nothing to be concerned of - there will be bugs onboard so just be prepared. Kinda a package of the place - there is a 10% suggested gratitude (give or take) of your booking value so just be prepared Read more Written January 20, 2024
  • jasonrP8088HT 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles An non-bank-breaker way to see the Amazon river After a 4:25 am flight from Lima and then a five hour wait at the Hilton Garden Hotel, we boarded a bus for a 2.5 hour ride to Iquitos where we boarded the boat. Staff was very pleasant. Food was average. Ordering wine with your meal involved someone having to running upstairs. Cabins were small and very basic but comfortable. It was a bit visually jarring when you turn into the hallway of rooms and see what for me are white aluminum, exterior door. The trip involved a number of daily excursions on skiffs which at first felt like a bit of a scam but then the monkeys, sloths, snakes, dolphins and piranha made a number of appearance. The guides were very knowledgeable…and chartty. If they had read the room, they have seen a punch of sweating, exhausted people swatting flies away but just the moment “let’s turn around and watch more pink dolphins.” The despair was palpable. . The size and cleanliness of the boat, the friendly and knowledgeable crew, and the Amazonian experience was all truelly memorable. We visited villages and learned a lot about their cultures/traditions. We were fortunate to see many pink and grey dolphins, sloths, anaconda, boa, bats, many birds, an assortment of monkeys, capybara (at a rescue), turtles, lizards, etc. Our guides were so knowledgeable and passionate of the Amazon and their culture. We learned so much and loved every minute of this Amazon vacation. Read more Written October 30, 2023
  • 64Joanne 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Incredible, beyond amazing An amazing experience, truly incredible. The staff on the boat are so helpful, kind and nothing is too much trouble. Beckett and Carlos in the dining room along with Charles the barman serving drinks and the amazing 5 course meal in the evenings. The dining area was always immaculate and the buffet breakfast and lunch and the served evening meal were of excellent standard and very yummy. Congratulations to the chef and his team. Robinson and Daniel were amazing naturalists. Their incredible ability to be able to see the smallest of insects or birds from a distance amazed us all. Their wealth of knowledge and great sense of humor helped to make my trip unforgettable. Marcos, the medic, was always on hand. When we went out on excursions , when humidity was high he was, there just in case. Continuously helping and checking that everyone was ok. Emily, the cruise coordinator, who made a difficult job look easy. Always with a smile, ready to help, and provide the best experience for every passenger. Karen who is the masseuse, her hands are magical. The room attendants who keep the rooms spotlessly clean and the beautiful flowers and animals that they surprise you with when you come back from an excursion are incredible talented. The two skip drivers who instantly fill you with a sense of security on the skip and their eagle eyes at helping to spot wildlife. The guys in the engine room and those who help to steer the Zafiro who never seem to tire. The Zafiro band, what can I say, GREAT entertainment. Finally, the most important member of staff, the Captain. Thank you for keeping us safe. Congratulations to all the staff on board and a big thank you to each and everyone of you. You all did a great job. You made my dream a reality and surpassed all expectations. Read more Written October 29, 2023

My sisters and I took our mom on the Aqua Nera as a surprise for her 80th birthday. We came home incredibly impressed and agreed it was indeed the trip of a lifetime. The boat is 6 star!! Huge, luxurious cabins with beautiful bathrooms and furnished like a modern, luxury hotel. 3 times a day housekeeping - including all laundry (back same day, folded). The staff on the boat were so positive, helpful and always went over and above. The wine and cocktails were fantastic - but the food was indescribable. Creative, fresh dishes using local ingredients and a chef that loved sharing the art of his craft. The spaces within the boat - especially the living room/bar were wonderful. Privacy when you needed it - but otherwise a social atmosphere with endless views. The outdoor spaces are well thought out and again offer something for everyone. The naturalists are fountains of knowledge and make the trip! They know where to take you, at what precise time and then bring the Amazon to life day after day. The staff also surprised us with cocktail and appetizers on a sand bar to watch the sunset our last night. What you are expecting - double it! We are already planning our next Aqua adventure! p.s. we never saw a single mosquito. Read more Written October 21, 2023

Everyone went above and beyond to make the trip great. The nature guides were both extremely knowledgeable and fun. They want you to see and experience everything the Amazon has to offer. Every day has 3 excursions starting bright and early at 6am. Obviously you don't have to go on them all but we didn't want to miss anything. We saw pink river dolphins, monkeys, sloths, cayman, tons of birds. Even an anaconda! We went on the 8 day 7 night and I'm glad we did the full tour. The food was excellent. Breakfast and lunch are both delicious buffets and dinner is a 5 course meal. I think lunch was my favorite but they were all great. Again, the staff was super lovely and amazing. If you are on the fence about this trip, trust me...book it and you will not be disappointed. Read more Written August 19, 2023

Cruise director Emily and a team of true experts on the flora and fauna of the region, naturists Robinson and Daniel, make the experience both educational and highly stimulating. On top of that, the Zafiro offers a culinary experience with elegant multi-course meals, enabling passengers to taste memorable food such as fresh Amazon fish and Peruvian desserts that are impossible to forget. All of the cruise staff we encountered are musicians, believe it or not. Joining the trip was easy by flying to Lima and meeting the tour group mid-morning at the Hilton Hotel in Iquitos. All transfers are arranged. We loved the whole experience! Read more Written August 18, 2023

We had an amazing time during this adventure. They kept us busy with activities before, in between and after meal times. This tour was definitely a highlight of our Peruvian adventure. Loved the dolphin-finding-mission, jungle walks, piranha-fishing, star gazing, bird watching and much more! Meals were interesting with many different types of fruit juices I have never seen anywhere else. Rooms were comfortable and swimming pool was a very welcome cooling-down mechanism. • DrLainey1 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An unforgettable trip! Aqua Expeditions reviews An incredible experience on the Amazon River! We did the 4-night expedition cruise on the Aria Amazon. It was a first-class trip that exceeded our expectations. The ship was luxurious and comfortable. The food was Michelin-star worthy and highlighted the bountiful flavors unique to the region. The crew could not have been more pleasant, eager to assist our every request and anticipated our needs. They had cold drinks and smiles waiting for us after hot days in the Amazonian sun, brought chilled towels during our jungle hike, and insect repellent and hand sanitizer always on the ready. Everything was included in the price (except alcohol, tips, and souvenirs - which is fair); it made travel planning so easy. We saw so many Amazonian animals that the crew went through a long list after just the second full day. Mammals, birds, reptiles, insects - all in the wild and in their natural glory. Our naturalists were incredibly knowledgeable of the animals, plants and region. They made the experience unforgettable, with their eagle eyes to spot animals, superpower quickness to catch predators for our education (and respectfully release them), and encyclopedic knowledge. They, and most (all?) of the crew, are from the local areas so their ability to educate us from their deep and personal understanding of the life, culture and people on the Amazon River was truly special. Their focus on sustainability was meaningful. We were very pleased with our trip - and are eager to try Aqua Expeditions’ other cruise destinations. Read more Written August 11, 2023

The dining staff was so eager to please and the food was different for every day and meal and totally delicious. You couldn’t go hungry there! The room was perfect with the sounds of the jungle and the hammocks to rest on, on the porch! Fresh water and towels everyday. But the absolute best was our guide, Edgar. He could not have been more accommodating for our group of ten family members. When we were late getting there our first day, we told him we wanted to do EVERYTHING! And he managed to work everything in, along with two kayaking trips, two fishing for pirrhana trips. No one could have worked harder to please us. His knowledge of all things, Amazon, was beyond belief! From our sunset boat tour, to our daytime and night time boat excursions, daytime and night time hikes in the jungle, spotting pink dolphins and swimming in the Amazon River! And a medicinal plant hike. I could never name the number of animals and birds we saw, from three toed sloths to four different kinds of monkeys, including the American Pygmy marmoset, anaconda, two kinds of boas, lizards galore, tarantulas, which we held, scorpions, pirrhannas and too many birds to mention! And Edgar was so helpful to me who has some mobility issues and eyesight difficulties. He made sure I saw everything and even took photos and videos for me! I can’t thank you enough, Edgar and all the staff and Muyana Lodge itself for this experience I will NEVER forget Read more Written July 9, 2023

Luxury Amazon River Cruise with Delfin II

Luxury Amazon River Cruise with Delfin II, Aracari Travel

The best way to visit the Peruvian Amazon in style is by luxury Amazon Cruise . Aqua Expeditions and Delfin are the two top cruise companies, with different size vessels than undertake cruises of differing durations. Aracari’s team member Giovanna recently tested out one of the top luxury amazon river cruise options in Peru, the Delfin II . Here Giovanna shares her first hand review and impressions of the luxury Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II.

Luxury Amazon River Cruise –  Delfin II

Luxury Amazon River Cruise with Delfin II, Aracari Travel

Day 1 – Arrival in Iquitos

When the day finally arrived for me to go on my first Amazon river cruise , I excitedly headed to the airport in Lima for my flight to Iquitos. I took the earliest flight available so that I could get to know the city of Iquitos prior to boarding the cruise. In particular, I was interested in visiting the Quistococha Zoo, which I had heard a lot about. Upon arrival, one of the guides from the Delfin II cruise was waiting for me and accompanied me to the zoo. During the visit, I saw and learned about local flora and fauna, which made it a worthwhile visit, even though the zoo looked as if it could use some renovations. In the afternoon I headed back to the airport to wait for the rest of the guests that would be joining me on the cruise. Together we continued to the private dock in Iquitos from where Delfin’s cruise ships embark and we took a boat to the main ship. The sun was already setting as we arrived and saw the silhouette of the cruise ship floating in the distance. Once I was all settled on the Delfin II, I met some of the other guests and we talked about how we were looking forward to our four-day Amazon adventure.

Day 2 – Pink Dolphins

The following morning after breakfast we set off on our first excursion through the Quebrada Yanayacu on one of the skippies to get a closer look at the jungle around us. A family of pink dolphins passed by right near us as if welcoming us to the Amazon. There are over 6,500 species of birds endemic to the Amazon rainforest, and we spotted all sorts of birds of various sizes and colors during our excursion.

After returning to the ship, the guests were gathered for a brief explanation of the course of the trip and where we were going to stop along the way, pointed out to us on a detailed map. Afterwards we enjoyed lunch. During the whole trip, lunch and dinner were amazing. Not only was the food superb but for each meal the decoration of the entire room was changed , from the place mats to the curtains. I thought it was a great idea because although we were on the same cruise ship for a few days, each meal felt like dining in a new restaurant. It was just one of the many details that kept each moment on the Delfin II interesting and exciting.

That afternoon was the best of the whole trip for me. We had the opportunity to swim in the river and it was an unforgettable experience. Not only was it the first time I had ever swam in a river of that size–let alone part of the famous Amazon river–but we had the unique experience of seeing another group of pink dolphins, but this time they were swimming along with us! Afterwards we continued along the Quebrada Cumaceba in the skippy on our way back to the ship. In the evening before dinner the guests attended a lecture that provided more information about the different kinds of dolphins native to the Amazon river and its tributaries.

Day 3 – Kayaking & Local Life

On the third day, we left bright and early before breakfast to explore the Laguna Clavero by kayak. After returning to the ship for breakfast, we returned to the skippies for another excursion. While out exploring Caño de Flor de Castaña, we were lucky enough to see a few exotic creatures such as a sloth, various species of monkey, spiders and many beautiful birds . Once we returned to the ship, we attended a cultural lecture about villages throughout the Amazon, to prepare us for our afternoon visit to Puerto Miguel, where we witnessed how locals live in this small village, admired their handicrafts, and gave small gifts to the children we met along the way. In the evening we enjoyed a gorgeous view of the sun setting over the water where two tributaries meet, the Marañon and the Ucayali rivers. The impressive sunset was accompanied by tasty exotic fruit cocktails served by the friendly barman on board. After the sun disappeared below the horizon, we watched a short film about the Amazon and then enjoyed dinner before settling in for the night.

Day 4 – Piranha fishing

On our final day aboard the Delfin II, we were set to have a picnic breakfast in the rainforest but it began to rain heavily and so we enjoyed our buffet breakfast on the ship. The scheduled activity for the day was fishing for piranhas in the Quebrada Tamshiyacu and we were all enthusiastic about the prospect of catching this notorious sharp-toothed fish. However, of the few skippies that set out for this fishing adventure, no one on our boat was fortunate enough to catch one. We were back on the Delfin II by midday in order to enjoy one last delicious lunch on board and then pack our bags as the ship continued on towards Iquitos. Once on land we visited a market, the floating neighborhood of Belén, the Eiffel house, and the Manatee Rescue Center where we fed these cute, large mammals.

After an amazing four days and three nights aboard the Delfin II, it was time to head back to Lima. I was grateful to Delfin for their impeccable service, from the guide that meets guests at the airport to the barman on the ship, to the knowledgeable staff. The rooms were comfortable, with beautiful jungle views through panoramic windows and the food was excellent. The excursions were fun and educational and the lectures were interesting and informative. All and all it was a fantastic, comfortable and luxurious way to explore the Amazon.
