There are not very many marked trails in Denali, and most of the trails here are short (less than 2 miles) and near the park entrance. One of the reasons Denali exists is to provide people with a place to explore a trail-less wilderness, and a result of this is a limited trail network. Some of these trails are utilitarian—they travel alongside the Denali Park Road and connect the visitor center with other important facilities in the entrance area of the park. Other trails offer a departure from the immediate surroundings of the park's only road, allowing you to seek a bit of solace and quiet, while still having an obvious, established path to follow. Without a guided tour, visitors will be limited to Denali Park Road which only consists of the first 14 miles and severely limits the amount of wildlife and landscape you will see.

Plus, most tours include local guides who can provide interesting facts and insights into the park’s history as well as mindblowing stories! The first time we visited, our guide told us all about a landslide that just missed his bus full of people and stranded them for an entire day.

Having been to Denali more than a half dozen times now, we will never return without a tour.

Denali is exceedingly guilty of its unpredictable weather, so it’s important to have some items that will ensure comfort and readiness for any adventure that comes your way. Here’s a list of essentials we’d suggest bringing along regardless of when you decide to visit:

• Weather-Appropriate Clothing : Layers are key. Pack moisture-wicking base layers , a fleece or down mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer.
• Sturdy Hiking Boots : Ensure they are well broken in before your trip to avoid blisters! Columbia has some great options.
• Daypack : For carrying snacks, water, and other essentials during your excursions. This Osprey 26L backpack is my favorite!
• Binoculars : To spot wildlife from a distance without disturbing their natural habitat. This 25×70 set is some of the best I’ve ever used.
• Sunglasses and Sunscreen : Even in colder weather, the sun can be intense, especially when reflecting off snow.
• Insect Repellent : Mosquitoes in Alaska can be bothersome, particularly in the summer months.
• Reusable Water Bottle : Staying hydrated is important, especially at higher altitudes! This LifeStraw bottle has two filters and has kept me from getting sick all over the world.
• Camera with Extra Batteries : Cold weather can drain batteries quickly, so extras are a must for capturing all the scenic views.
• Snacks : Energy bars, nuts, and other portable food can keep you fueled during the day, just don’t bring more than you will consume in a day. Remember, food attracts unwanted attention from animals!
• First Aid Kit : Including personal medications and items like bandages and pain relievers.
• Bear Spray : For safety, especially if venturing into backcountry areas. You’ll need to pick this up in Alaska since you can’t fly with it (even in your checked luggage).
• A Map and Compass or GPS : If you plan on doing any hiking or unguided trips within Denali, these are a must.
• Headlamp or Flashlight : With extra batteries for any low-light situations.
• Thermal Hat and Gloves : Morning and evening temperatures can be frigid, even in summer.

What is the Best Month to See Denali?

The optimal time to visit Denali National Park to ensure the best chance of witnessing Mount Denali and the local wildlife is during the brief summer months, particularly from June to late August .

The warmest conditions occur in July, which is the time most likely to afford clear views of the mountain. However, we’ve also visited Denali in the middle of July when there was nothing but rain and clouds for two weeks straight and at the same time in September when we had perfectly clear views of Denali.

Typically, between June and August is best for wildlife spotting and the weather is supposed to be at its best for the year with lots of sunshine, but don’t be surprised if you end up with less-than-preferable conditions.

How Many Days Do You Need to See Denali National Park?

In our opinion, we usually recommend a minimum of 2-3 days to explore the park’s vast landscape and enjoy a variety of experiences without feeling rushed.

This allows sufficient time for an adventure tour through the park to see wildlife, day hikes, ranger-led programs, and possible flightseeing tours (weather permitting). Those with a penchant for leisurely exploration or who desire to undertake extended backcountry adventures may opt for a longer visit, potentially spanning a week or more, to fully immerse themselves in the wild beauty of Denali.

We usually visited for 2 days or so at a time, but some of the people we met staying at Teklanika River Campground at Mile 29 of Denali Park Road were staying for over a week! They were there to go fishing, do some day hiking, take a flightseeing tour, etc.

So, depending on what you want to do, you may need more or less time in the park.

What Kind of Wildlife Can I See on a Denali National Park Tour?

On a Denali tour, visitors may spot grizzlies and black bears foraging for berries, herds of caribou running, moose roaming the open landscapes, or Dall sheep on the rocky mountainsides. Foxes, wolves, and lynxes are more elusive but thrilling to witness!

We were fortunate enough to see all of these animals during our visits in July and September, but of course, every visit will be different.

Additionally, the park is home to numerous bird species such as golden eagles, ptarmigans, and wheatears. Sightings are never guaranteed, but early mornings and evenings (particularly in the hours surrounding dawn and dusk) often provide the best opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Is a Denali Bus Tour Worth It?

A bus tour in Denali National Park is undoubtedly worthwhile! Not only does it reduce personal vehicle traffic, supporting the park’s conservation efforts, but the knowledgeable drivers also offer insightful commentary about the park’s history, geology, and wildlife.

With their expertise, you’re more likely to spot animals and learn about their habitats. We were shocked at how many animals we didn’t see right in front of our eyes when we were navigating the first 14 miles of Denali Park Road on our own versus when we were on a bus tour!

Bus tours also provide access to areas of the park that private vehicles cannot reach, significantly expanding your range of exploration and increasing your chances of memorable wildlife encounters. Moreover, they come with the convenience of not having to navigate or park, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes around you.

Whether you choose one of the narrated tour buses tailored to educating visitors or a non-narrated transit bus which gives more flexibility for hikers, a bus tour is a gateway to the full breadth of experiences Denali offers.

Do I Need Reservations for Denali National Park?

Reservations for Denali National Park are highly recommended, particularly if you’re planning to visit during the peak summer months . The first time we visited, we wanted to rent bikes and ride through the park, which was only made possible because I reserved the two bike spots on the Eielson Visitor Center transit bus months in advance.

Accommodations within the park, such as campgrounds and the limited rooms at the Denali Park lodges, often book up many months in advance. Even backcountry permits for those wishing to venture into the wilderness require planning ahead as there are limits on the number of people allowed in each area per day. Reservations help ensure that you have a spot and can help in planning your Alaska itinerary more effectively.

What City is Closest to Denali National Park?

While technically Healy is the closest city to Denali, we wouldn’t call it much of a city at all. It’s home to a small population of under 1,000 people and primarily serves as the gateway to Denali National Park. The next closest city is Fairbanks , about 110 miles northeast, which has an international airport and 10x the accommodation, restaurant, and shop options.

The small town of Healy is only about 11 miles north of the Denali Park entrance and provides a very limited variety of services, lodging options, and dining establishments for travelers seeking proximity to their Denali adventure.

Can I Visit Denali National Park on an Alaska Cruise?

How to Spend One Epic Day in Denali National Park: Three Complete Denali Itineraries

Denali National Park is one of the largest national parks in the United States. With over 6 million acres of pristine wilderness to discover, it can be hard to see it all in one trip.

Many people plan their once-in-a-lifetime trips to Alaska and try to fit as much as possible into their short itineraries, leaving limited time in places like Denali. If you’re searching for a short and detailed Denali itinerary that allows you to see Denali National Park in one day , you’ve come to the right place.

While one day in Denali is truly not enough, this Denali itinerary will provide multiple ways for you to get the most out of one day in Denali National Park .

Overview of Denali National Park

Visiting Denali National Park can be challenging. While it is easily the most accessible of the national parks in Alaska , there’s only one road in the park.

Other areas can only be accessed by plane, on foot, or by boat. Perhaps the trickiest part of Denali’s single-road system is the limited access. A majority of the 92-mile road is unpaved, and only park buses are allowed on this portion, with the exception of the annual Denali Road Lottery .

IMPORTANT : As of August 2021, Denali Park Road is partially closed due to a massive landslide. It’s expected to reopen in 2026. Learn more here .

How to Spend One Day in Denali

One day in Denali National Park is simply not enough. The park is huge, the park is wild, and there are so many things to do. If you have to shorten your trip into only one day, below are a variety of options so you can find the perfect Denali itinerary to make the most of your short time.

Denali Itinerary A: Take the Bus to Eielson Visitor Center

Time to Allow : 8 Hours (4 hours each way, which includes time for wildlife and bathroom stops)

Cost : $43.50 per adult (16 and up) plus a $15 per adult park entrance fee

Reservations : Reserve Denali

Dates : Typically, the road opens to Eielson Visitor Center on June 1. This is weather dependent. It can snow any day of the year in Alaska, so prepare for inclement weather no matter when you go. The road will close before the annual Road Lottery in mid-September.

While it may sound unappealing to spend eight hours on a bumpy bus ride, it’s going to be one of the most scenic trips you’ve ever taken.

Denali Bus Depot to Teklanika River (30 Miles, ~1 hour)

You’ll board at the Denali Bus Depot and start your journey on the 15 miles of paved road. Here, you have the option of seeing Denali itself for the first time, but you’ll get much closer throughout the day. This is also one of the most common stretches to see wildlife like moose and caribou, along with smaller critters like porcupines and snowshoe hares.

When you stop at Savage River, a park ranger will record your visit and hop on the bus to briefly welcome you to the park. This is when the true adventure begins, on the famous unpaved section of Denali’s single road.

From Savage River to Teklanika River, located at milepost 30, the road will slowly wind through the boreal forest. Wildlife is sometimes seen in this section, but the most beautiful scenery is still ahead. Your bus will stop at Teklanika River for your first bathroom break.

Teklanika River to Toklat River (23 Miles, ~1 hour)

Next, you’ll drive through Igloo Canyon with Cathedral Mountain on your left and Igloo Mountain on your right. Check the peaks for little white dots, which are actually Dall sheep clinging to the rocky mountains with their impressive hooves. Dall sheep were nearly extinct from market hunting, so Charles Sheldon and others fought to create Denali National Park in order to save the species. Today, there are over 1,500 in the park.

Once you depart Igloo Canyon, you’ll leave the forest behind and drive through Sable Pass. Keep an eye out for wildlife here – it’s so prominent in this area that it’s been closed to hiking and backpacking for over 50 years.

The bus will stop at Polychrome Pass next for a photography stop. There’s a short path here to lead to more vistas. Be sure to stay on the established path so you don’t destroy the park’s subalpine habitat.

About 20 minutes later, you’ll stop at Toklat River, your next bathroom stop. You’re now at milepost 53 with only a few miles left to reach Eielson, but the trek will take a full hour. Toklat is another great stop to look for Dall sheep on the mountain tops. Grizzly bears and caribou have also been seen near the river. Also located here is a small gift shop in a canvas tent.

Toklat River to Eielson Visitor Center (13 Miles, ~1 hour)

The next 13 miles are, in my opinion, the most exciting. The winding roads will take you through Stony Pass and lead to one of the most famous views of Denali at Stony Overlook, if the clouds are clear. If you’ve read my tips for visiting Denali National Park , you know that only 30% of visitors get a chance to see the mountain. You’ll have some amazing views of the Alaska Range from here until you reach your final destination, Eielson Visitor Center.

There are a few short hikes you can do at Eielson, detailed in my guide to every trail in Denali National Park . The bus will stop here for 30 minutes to give your bus driver a lunch break, so you’ll have a bit of time to explore. It’s also encouraged to stay here longer and take a different bus back in order to give you more time. Grizzly bears are common near Eielson, so if you decide to eat please be very aware of your food waste and crumbs.

Next, you’ll journey back the same way you came, stopping again at Toklat and Teklanika for bathroom breaks. Enjoy the views or take a nap until someone spots your next wildlife sighting.

Denali Itinerary B: Explore the Front Country

If you don’t want to ride a bus all day or the buses are full when you arrive, Denali’s front country is special in its own right. Almost all of Denali’s 20 hiking trails are located within the first 15 miles of the Denali Park Road. My favorite trail in the park, Savage Alpine, takes you from the Savage River east parking area to the Mountain Vista parking area with sweeping views from above.

Furthermore, if you have a vehicle, you can drive on that portion of the road. Don’t worry – if you don’t have a vehicle, there’s also the free Savage River Shuttle available to transport you. While it’s certainly not the most scenic portion of the 92-mile road, it’s still worth a drive and you have a chance of seeing both wildlife and Denali.

Visit Denali’s Sled Dog Kennels

If you’re worn out after exploring Denali’s trails, why not visit the only sled dog kennel in the National Park Service? These working dogs assist with research projects in the winter in addition to transporting gear for climbing expeditions on Denali. In the summer, they enjoy the off-season with thousands of visitors offering love and attention.

Park Rangers also offer a unique program called Sled Dog Demonstrations. During this 30-minute program, you’ll hear all about the great work the dogs do, why they’re perfect for the job, and see them pull a Park Ranger around a small track on a wheeled-cart. The best part is the excitement and enthusiasm you’ll see from the dogs, who know it’s time to run.

Remember that visiting the Kennels comes with strict rules. Don’t feed any of the dogs or approach them if they’re inside their houses. You’ll also see ropes around most of the dog houses – don’t climb over those; the dogs love their privacy after thousands of people come to see them every day. Usually, there are 1-4 dogs available to pet without any ropes around their houses. The dogs are all friendly and ready for love from park visitors.

Denali Itinerary C: Join a Park Ranger on a Discovery Hike

If you’re seeking more adventure than the previous Denali itinerary options have to offer, you’ll like Denali Itinerary C.

One of the unique things about Denali National Park is you can hike off-trail. In fact, there are only about 35 miles of hiking trails in the entire park! Many visitors are not used to this terrain or hiking in the wilderness, which is why Park Rangers are there to help with daily Discovery Hikes .

Difficulty : There are two hikes offered every day, one being moderate and the other being moderate or strenuous. There is no such thing as an easy Discovery Hike. Moderate hikes have an elevation gain under 1,000 feet while strenuous hikes may gain more. Strenuous hikes may also involve creek or river crossings.

Cost : While the Discovery Hike itself is free, a bus ticket is required. It costs the same as a ticket to Eielson.

Dates : Discovery Hikes are typically offered from June 8 to August 31 or early-September.

Time to Allow : You should expect to be in the park for a full day. One hike is within the first 45 miles of the park, the other is anywhere from 45 to 66 miles from the Denali Bus Depot. Depending on how long you’ll ride the bus, you may hike anywhere from 2 to 5 hours and spend another 1 to 4 hours on the bus (each way).

How to Register : You must sign-up in person at the Denali Visitor Center or Eielson Visitor Center, and you cannot sign-up any more than two days in advance. All members of your party must be present to sign-up. Arrive as early as possible; the hikes fill up quickly. Only 11 hikers are permitted on each hike in order to preserve the character of the wilderness. Park Rangers do not keep a waiting list. There are no exceptions!

What to Expect : Hiking off-trail is very different than hiking on a trail. You will not cover a great distance despite hiking for many hours. It can be very hard on your knees; the tundra is like walking on a bouncy mattress or a giant sponge. You can expect everything from uneven terrain to stream crossings and dense vegetation. Because of the spongy tundra, expect wet feet even in dry conditions.

What to Pack For Your Discovery Hike :

• Tall, sturdy hiking boots with excellent tread
• Wool hiking socks
• A pair of dry socks for the bus ride back (you may also want a change of shoes)
• Rain jacket
• Rain pants (even if it’s not raining, you may be walking through wet vegetation)
• Long hiking pants (shorts are not ideal)
• Layers: long-sleeve fleece , long-sleeve shirt , short-sleeve shirt
• Hat ( ball cap and fleece cap )
• Trekking poles
• At least 2L of water and a water filter
• Lunch and snacks
• Bear spray (optional; the Park Ranger will have bear spray)

An insider’s guide to Denali National Park and Preserve

Denali National Park and Preserve is named for the nation’s mightiest mountain, but the 6-million-acre park encompasses so much more. Denali has options for every type of visitor. Whether you’re an avid backpacker looking to forge new trails or a relaxed traveler content to watch for animals on a tour, you’re sure to experience jaw-dropping scenery.

Getting there

Located roughly four hours north of Anchorage and two hours south of Fairbanks on the George Parks Highway, it’s an easy drive to the heart of the state — after all, there’s only one road entrance to the park.

If you don’t have your own wheels, here’s how to get there:

Bus: One option is Alaska/Yukon Trails, a passenger van company that can transport up to 16 passengers. They run from Anchorage to Talkeetna to Denali to Fairbanks and the same route in reverse. Expect to leave town early for either departure and to get in around lunchtime. For a ride in a deluxe motorcoach, one option is The Park Connection, where travelers can either book tickets from Anchorage or Seward. Another is the Alaska Shuttle, which runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to get out at any point along the journey and rejoin via a later bus.

Train: Taking the train (the Alaska Railroad turns 101 this season) adds about three hours of travel time to your journey, but it goes through wilderness only accessible on the track. Plus, there’s a dining and bar car, knowledgeable guides and dome cars with sweeping views of the mountains and valleys along the way. The train makes a stop on the nearly 1,000-foot-long railroad bridge over an enormous gorge known as Hurricane Gulch. On a clear day, you can see Denali from there. (A more economical option both in terms of funds and time is taking the rails one way and a motorcoach back. Bonus: You’ll see even more of the state.) Getting around

The National Park Service maintains the only road leading into the park. It’s a 92-mile, mostly gravel route running parallel to the Alaska Range to what was once the mining community of Kantishna. Normally, from late May to early September, visitors can drive the first 12.5 miles of the road to Savage River with just their park pass.

To go farther than the dozen-ish miles allowed to personal vehicles, travelers have to be on foot, bike or riding on one of the school-bus-style shuttles. You can hop on a cheaper, more flexible bus tour that allows you to get off and on and explore on your own, or you can take a narrated bus tour with a driver who crafts an itinerary for you. There are also courtesy buses that serve the portion of the park road that is publicly drivable, which includes stops at the sled dog kennel and Visitors Center.

For summer 2024, the road will only be open to Mile 43 due to rock slides (the road is expected to remain closed through summer 2026). Be sure to check the National Park Service site for updates.

‘Will the mountain be out?’: Where to see Denali

Rising 20,310 feet, Denali can be seen from parts of Anchorage to Fairbanks on a clear day. But clear days can be hard to come by. National Park Service rangers stress to visitors that the mammoth mountain is out only one of every three days (a rule that isn’t hard and fast — it could be out for days at a time and then hidden for a month straight).

Even with its great height, the mountain isn’t visible from the park entrance, the surrounding campgrounds or nearby hotels. Miles 9 and 11 are your first chances of spotting it, the latter spot having a pullout and interpretive waysides with information about the cliff. There are many other spots along the road that allow for peeks of the peak. While the most iconic view of Denali is at Reflection Pond, near Mile 85, the road to that view is closed in 2024, unless you’re staying at one of the fly-in-only accommodations in Kantishna.

For sure open in 2024

Sled dog kennel: Denali is the only national park in the U.S. where rangers do winter patrols via dog sled. But during the few precious months when there isn’t snow on the ground, the dogs have different duties: educating tourists, posing for pictures and getting belly rubs. Their kennel is free to visit, and their handlers are available to chat about what goes into making a sled dog. (Bonus: There’s usually a litter of puppies there training to become full-fledged sled dogs.)

Denali National Park Visitors Center: If you come in by train, the visitors center will be one of the first buildings you see. It’s the main information center in the park, with exhibits on the park’s history and the animals you might see in the boreal forest outside its doors. There are also various ranger-led activities and hikes that launch from there.

Adventure sports and flightseeing: Various operators tout all manners of escape from their storefronts on Glitter Gulch, a half-mile stretch of road near the park entrance. Activities range from ATV rides and ziplining near the park to rafting down the Nenana River or flightseeing around the mountain. Shop around to find an itinerary that matches your interest and budget.

Wonder Lake: This is where Ansel Adams’ famous photograph of the mountain was taken. When Denali isn’t shrouded in clouds, its image is mirrored in the water below, making Wonder Lake a favorite spot for photographers. However, because it’s located at Mile 85 of the Denali Park Road, it’s only accessible to those staying in Kantishna this season.

Reopening after 2026

The National Park Service has announced that the road will remain closed at Mile 43 through the 2026 season. If you’re planning ahead for a later summer, however, you can add Eielson Visitor Center to your list. Located at Mile 66, you can reach the Eielson Visitor Center by shuttle. On a clear day, the views of Denali are stunning. Three maintained trails spider out from the center, though hikers are welcome to go off path. Inside the center is also a small art gallery with works depicting the wilderness of Denali.

Due to the Park Road closure, Eielson Visitor Center will be closed at least through 2026. Be sure to check with the National Park Service for updates on when the Visitor Center will reopen.

Where to stay

There are four campgrounds in Denali National Park that will be accessible in 2024: Riley Creek (at the park entrance), Savage River (13 miles in), Sanctuary River (23 miles) and Teklanika River (29 miles).

The sites have anywhere from seven to 53 tent-only campsites, with the exception of Riley Creek, which has 150 sites suitable for camping and RVs. Considering how few campsites there are in the park, we highly recommended you make a reservation ahead of time. For more information, go to reservedenali.com .

There are also many hotel, cabin, B&B and hostel options for visitors to Denali National Park. Many are clustered just outside the park entrance, a few are found at the end of the park road and more are located in neighboring towns.

While remote, the accommodations at the end of the park road in Kantishna are far from roughing it. Places like Denali Backcountry Lodge, Kantishna Roadhouse and Camp Denali may be 92 miles into the national park, but they don’t skimp on creature comforts like running water, electricity, heat and private bathrooms (granted, there’s no Wi-Fi or cell reception). Generally much spendier than the options at the park entrance, these lodges are usually all-inclusive. During the 2024 season, these accommodations are fly-in only.

Outside the park, your options vary widely. Crow’s Nest is made up of terraced rows of cozy cabins tucked up on a hillside, offering exponentially better views of Mount Healy the higher you go, and Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge is one of the biggest lodging options with high-end amenities, including an espresso bar, a dinner theater and laundry services. Alaska State Law requires children to be in a car or booster seat as follows:

• Children younger than 12 months of age or less than 20 pounds (9 kilograms) must be in a rear facing infant seat.
• Children older than 12 months and younger than 4 years, and at least 20 pounds (9 kilograms), must be in a child restraint.
• Children aged 4 through 7 years who are less than 57 inches (1.4 meters) tall or less than 65 pounds (30 kilograms) must be in a booster seat. Booster seats are no longer required for children of this age once they reach 57 inches (1.4 meters) tall or weigh 65+ pounds (30 kilograms).
• Parents are responsible for providing the appropriate car seat.

Day hiking or backpacking may require extra logistical planning if your children require a car seat.

Beyond the Savage River Check Station at mile 15 of the Park Road, you'll need to be on a bus, bicycle, or on foot. Prior to the 1972 completion of the George Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3), which is the main travel artery into interior Alaska, visitation to Denali National Park and Preserve was fairly low. Anticipation of major increases in traffic resulting from a direct route to the park prompted park officials to implement a mass transit system beyond Mile 15 on the Denali Park Road. To provide for visitor access and enjoyment of the world class resources, our concessioner, Doyon/ARAMARK Joint Venture , offers several types of bus services along the park road.

Extending 92 miles from the park entrance to its terminus in the old mining community of Kantishna, this mostly-gravel road traverses boreal forests and sub-arctic tundra. The eastern half of the road (from Mile 0–43) crosses rolling mountainsides and scenic river valleys as it meanders through spectacular vistas and prime wildlife viewing areas. By riding a bus, you help to reduce traffic congestion and to protect the natural resources of the park. Planning a trip to Denali can be a big undertaking! Just getting to the park can take quite a while, and it is distinctly different from many national parks, so even seasoned park travelers can be unsure how to plan their trip.
