Preparing for Your Cruise – Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of clothing, toiletries or other items should I pack for my cruise?

As a general guide, bring clothing you would take on a vacation to the itinerary you’re on, such as the Caribbean , Europe or The Bahamas .

You can pack a little lighter, because there is a hair dryer in every stateroom as well as shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and soap.

Important Items Be sure to carry all proof of citizenship, required documents , your method of payment, prescription medications (in original containers) and any valuable items with you.

Clothing Tropical itineraries or summer travel – Bring lightweight clothing such as shorts, slacks, sundresses, jeans and short-sleeved or sleeveless tops.

Northern itineraries or winter travel – Pack warmer clothing, including a light jacket, sweatshirt or sweater, and socks.

Footwear – You may want to do some walking during port stops, so be sure to pack comfortable shoes like boat shoes, sandals or athletic shoes.

Sun wear – Swimsuits, hats or visors and sunglasses are a must for most of our itineraries. Also pack a high-SPF waterproof sunscreen if you plan to be at the pool or outdoors.

Costumes – During themed cruises and onboard celebrations like Pirate Night, Guests are invited to dress in costume. We value safety and good judgment and ask Guests to choose costumes that are family friendly, not obstructive, objectionable, offensive or violent. To avoid any disappointment or delay in the boarding process, please refrain from bringing toys or props that resemble guns, knives or other related implements. Masks that completely cover a person’s face may only be worn when standing still at character photo locations and must be carried when moving around the ship. Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs. Guests that fail to comply with these guidelines may be removed from events unless their costume can be modified.

Dressy attire – If you are planning to dine at Palo , Palo Steakhouse , Enchanté or Remy during your cruise, be sure to pack appropriate clothing for these more formal, adults-only dining experiences.

Other Items Corrective lenses – If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, be sure to pack spare glasses or extra contacts.

Stroller – We recommend you bring your own stroller. However a limited number of strollers are available for rent on board .

Golf clubs – If you plan to golf at any of the port stops, you are welcome to bring your clubs. Please note that clubs do not count against your 2-bag limit, but you will need to store them in your stateroom.

Additionally, there are some items that you can bring on board, but they are subject to inspection:

  • Baby monitors
  • Humidifiers
  • Portable fans
  • Sleep machines
  • White noise machines

So, what happens if you pack a prohibited item in your luggage? Well, that item will be confiscated, and your luggage will likely be held up in the screening process — which means it may take a lot longer to get to your stateroom.

Disney Cruise Line Alcohol Rules

As you might imagine, there are rules about bringing alcohol on board your Disney Cruise — but it’s not totally prohibited.

First off, don’t pack alcohol in your checked luggage — it will be confiscated and result in delays on your luggage being delivered to your stateroom. You can, however, bring alcohol on board in your carry-on — up to 2 750-ml bottles of wine or sparkling wine or 6 12-oz. beers. You can enjoy these beverages in your stateroom. If you take a bottle of wine, you brought with you into a dining room, that’s fine, too — just note that you will be charged a $26 corkage fee.

Disney Cruise Line Luggage Limits

Packing for a cruise is a lot like packing for a flight — you are allowed a personal item (like a purse, fanny pack or backpack), a carry-on, and two pieces of checked luggage per person. You will receive luggage tags for the two pieces of checked luggage prior to your cruise.

Your carry-on cannot be larger than 22 inches high, 14 inches wide and 9 inches deep.

disney cruise packing rules

Hey, Mickey!

At the port, you will check your suitcases with porters, and keep your personal item and carry-on with you. Your suitcases will be delivered to your stateroom a few hours after you board. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • It will usually be an hour or two after you board before you can go to your stateroom. Keep this in mind when deciding on carry-ons. Do you need something to roll with you rather than a bag you have to carry around? Does everyone in your party NEED a carry-on, or can you get by with one?
  • Pack computers, tablets, and anything else fragile in a carry-on. You will also want to keep medications with you. If you are bringing alcohol on board in accordance with the Disney Cruise Line rules, it will need to be in your carry-on.
  • Many people pack swimsuits, cover-ups, and sunscreen in their carry-on, as the pools usually open shortly after you board, and you may not have your checked luggage yet.

Packing for your Disney Cruise shouldn’t be stressful — but it is important to follow the luggage rules, so that your trip gets off to a great start! One of the best tips we can give you for taking a Disney Cruise is to use a travel agent who specializes in Disney! They know the ins and outs of every cruise ship, and keep up with all the discounts and deals available for your trip — and their services are free to you. We have used Small World Vacations for years to book our Disney travel, and we recommend you use them, too!

Passports, birth certificates and important documents

Do you need to pack a passport for a disney cruise.

It's always a good idea to have a passport when you cruise , even if it isn't required. You never know if there will be an unexpected situation or emergency causing you to debark your ship early and fly home from a foreign country.

But it's not always feasible for everyone in your travel party to have a passport. The good news is there are lots of Disney cruises that do not require you to pack a passport.

For example, round-trip sailings from Port Canaveral, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, San Diego, San Juan, New Orleans and New York require only an original state-issued birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. Kids 15 and under do not need a government-issued ID.

However, if you are sailing from Vancouver to Alaska, you will need a passport if you are 16 or older. Those under 16 can do that sailing with a state-issued birth certificate, which works for land and sea crossings, but everyone who arrives in Canada by air from the U.S. would need a passport.

Pro tip: Don't put passports in your checked bags! You must show them in the cruise terminal when you check in for your sailing, so put them in your embarkation day backpack.

disney cruise packing rules

Other required documents

Be sure to pack any other documents you might need to show your identity, citizenship and ability to cruise:

  • Non-expired government-issued ID
  • A letter of permission to travel without the other custodial parent if sailing solo with your kids internationally (or if you're sailing with your grandkids or another child without their parents)
  • Your Disney Cruise Port Arrival Form with QR code (have this handy when you board)
  • A letter from your doctor if you're pregnant, saying you're not further along than 23 weeks and safe to travel

Pack your luggage tags when you travel to the port and attach them to the luggage that the crew will deliver to your cabin.

Related: These are the documents you need for a cruise

Don't stress about what you're going to wear on a Disney cruise. In most areas of the ship, casual, comfortable clothes are always appropriate.

disney cruise packing rules

How long your cruise is, where it is going and what you are doing will dictate what you need to pack per person. Here are some suggestions on wardrobe items to pack for your Disney cruise.

  • One casual outfit per day
  • One to two pairs of sleepwear
  • One to two swimsuits — two if heading to a warm destination and you plan to swim frequently
  • Rash guards or other UV protectant swim shirts if you want to spend the day outside in the sun
  • Swimsuit cover-up
  • One zip-up hoodie or sweater for the movies and evening shows if you get cold
  • Work out gear, if desired, for the gym, onboard walking/running track or the Castaway Cay 5K
  • Shoes: one pair of sneakers, one pair of sandals, one pair of water shoes (most important on Disney Wish, which has a hot deck) and one nicer pair of shoes for evenings (optional)
  • Nicer outfits if you want to dress up at night or are dining in an adult-only restaurant such as Palo , Remy or Enchante with fancier dress codes
  • Mickey ears: optional but fun
  • Excursion-specific gear: appropriate clothes for port activities, which may mean an extra casual outfit for that day if you expect to get hot or sweaty, or an umbrella or rain gear if your tour will operate rain or shine

disney cruise packing rules

If sailing to Alaska:

  • Rain jacket
  • Warmer outer layers, such as a vest or long sleeve shirt
  • Warm gloves and a hat
  • Hiking boots, if necessary

disney cruise packing rules

If on a seven-day or longer sailing:

  • Dressy attire for the optional "formal night" that takes place once every seven-night or longer cruise
  • Travel-sized laundry detergent or a travel-friendly laundry sheet if you want to use the washing machines and dryers on the ships (available for a small fee using your Key to the World Card, or you can buy detergent on the ship)

Themed outfits

Your Disney Cruise will likely have a themed night, though the theme will depend on where you're sailing.

Mexico and Caribbean cruises most reliably have pirate night, which is the most common theme on a Disney sailing. However, Alaska sailings often have a Frozen-themed evening instead. Many cruisers dress up for these events.

Pirate night

Most Disney Cruises have a pirate-themed evening where everyone, even the characters, dresses up in pirate attire. The crew may lay out pirate bandanas in your stateroom for you to wear, but you should bring your own pirate gear from home. It's a bunch of fun to lean into the theme — and it's much cheaper to bring from home than buy onboard.

disney cruise packing rules

'Frozen' night

If you're sailing to Alaska, you'll get a "Frozen"-themed night instead. Pack your Elsa dress, Nordic-looking sweater or Sven the reindeer outfit and join in the fun.

disney cruise packing rules

Princess dresses and other costumes

There's never not an appropriate time to dress in your princess best on a Disney cruise. You can buy princess dresses for your kids at the Bibbity Boppity Boutique, but you'll save some cash by bringing one from home.

disney cruise packing rules

The BBB package that includes the dress, backpack and makeup is about $200. If you bring your own dress, the hair-and-makeup-only package comes with a T-shirt and costs half that amount. I'm partial to the non-itchy dresses from Little Dress Up Shop if you want something both washable and wearable.

disney cruise packing rules

Either way, when you're in that magical age range, there's nothing like meeting your favorite princess onboard while being dressed in your own royal ballgown.

If you're sailing on one of Disney's Marvel, Pixar or other themed cruises, you may want to pack costumes or outfits to represent your favorite superheroes or movie characters. Halloween costumes are a must on Halloween on the High Seas cruises, and holiday apparel won't go amiss on Very Merrytime cruises around the holidays.

Lanyards — if it's your 1st Disney cruise

While the ships are working on transitioning to a DisneyBand+ system , most still give passengers a keycard to use as a room key and onboard charge card. Though it isn't the most stylish look, wearing your keycard around your neck via a lanyard is a functional solution to keep your card handy (and keep your kids from losing theirs), so pack a lanyard to hold your key card if it's your first Disney Cruise.

If you are a returning cruiser with Silver, Gold, Platinum or Pearl status in the Disney Castaway Club program , a free lanyard should await you in your cabin. It will be themed to your level in the Castaway program.

disney cruise packing rules

Refillable water bottle and coffee mug

Regular self-pour coffee and soda are free on a Disney Cruise — but only up on the pool deck and in the buffet area. Unless you like going up and down the stairs frequently to grab the small paper cups, pack a coffee mug with a lid or other container to hold the coffee or soda you want.

Refillable water bottle stations are available around the ship, so pack a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated for free.

You'll need to pay extra for soda in cans and plastic water bottles (unless you are staying in the concierge level and getting them for free from the concierge fridge). So you'll save money if you bring your own containers and refill from the dispensers.

Portable charger

You're going to be using your phone a ton on your Disney cruise, whether to find activities or message your sailing party in the Disney cruise app or to take plenty of pictures. Batteries can drain quickly — especially on port days.

Pack a portable charger or power bank , so you don't run out of battery juice while you're on the go.

Magnetic hooks

Cruise cabins are small. If you are traveling with a family, every nook and cranny can fill up quickly. Take advantage of the ship's metal frame by packing magnetic hooks that you can attach to your cabin's walls and doors. They create the perfect spots to hang your keycards, hats, light jackets, bags and/or swimsuits.

disney cruise packing rules

Amazon sells some affordable magnetic hooks .

For your port excursion days, long afternoons on the pool deck, and for your embarkation and debarkation days, you'll want a good backpack or large crossbody bag to keep the things you need handy.

Related: These are our favorite travel backpacks

What to pack in your embarkation day backpack

You will most likely hand your larger suitcases to the porters at the pier when you arrive, and they won't arrive in your cabin until mid-afternoon. Therefore, you'll want to pack anything you need to check in for your cruise or your first afternoon on board in the backpack you keep with you.

Some of those items include:

  • Passports, IDs and boarding documents
  • Money and credit cards
  • Any necessary medication
  • Electronics and external charger/battery pack
  • Swimsuit, sunscreen, flip flops, sun hat

Related: Items you should always pack in your cruise carry-on bag

Pro tip: One of the best times to swim without crowds or use the waterslides without waiting is shortly after boarding. Don't be shy about popping into that swimsuit in a restroom (or wearing it under the clothes you board in) and taking a ride on the slide before half the ship has had time to embark. If you are one of the first to board, the pool deck attractions may not be open yet, but usually by noon or 1 p.m., you should be good to go.

disney cruise packing rules

Door decorations

If you walk the halls of a Disney cruise ship, you'll see decorations on many doors. Usually, these decorations consist of magnets, some personalized to the guests in the cabin or the cruise itself.

disney cruise packing rules

It's not only fun to have a decorated door, but it can also help your kids (and you!) easily spot your door while you're still getting used to the ship.

You can buy personalized items on Etsy or even find some Disney cruise accessories on Amazon . Just order with enough buffer to allow time for personalization.

Fish extenders and other Disney accessories

Ignore this part if this is your first Disney cruise or you're already overwhelmed with the packing and planning. We've sailed seven times with Disney and only done this once.

But if you want to go all-in on the Disney Cruise Line experience, you can join an informal group on Facebook whose participants exchange gifts throughout the cruise. Just search for your ship name and sailing date in Facebook to find your group.

To join the fun, you must pack a "fish extender," a pouch you hang from the fish-shaped mail holder above your cabin door. With enough advance time, you can order a personalized fish extender on Etsy or just get a basic one on Amazon .

disney cruise packing rules

Even if you don't join a gift-exchange group, you might want to hang up a fish extender anyway. Sometimes other cruisers will surprise cabins with small gifts like stickers and candies. Or you can delight your own kids with unexpected gifts you place into the pouches yourself.

disney cruise packing rules

If all of that sounds like too much, but you'd like to exchange a bit of Disney magic, some cruisers put up pin trading boards on their cabin doors. You can pick up pins on ShopDisney or Amazon before your sailing and then make pin trades as you walk the halls.

Food and drinks

Byo wine or beer.

If you are 21 or older, you can bring up to two bottles of unopened wine or Champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or six beers (no larger than 12 ounces each) at the beginning of the sailing and at each port of call. The catch is you must carry these on board yourself and cannot put them into your checked bags.

disney cruise packing rules

Nonalcoholic beverages

If you want to stock your stateroom minifridge with Gatorade, bottles of water or cans of soda, you can bring those on board, too. They must be unopened, and, as with the wine, you have to carry them on yourself, so the only real restriction is your ability to carry the drinks yourself.

You can also bring nonperishable snack foods in original factory-sealed packaging if you want specific snack items. If you have a baby who needs special foods or formula, bring that along, too. If you don't want to lug a bunch of jars, you can request fresh, pureed vegetables in the main dining rooms and via room service.

Related: Things you can't bring onboard a cruise

Cash and cards

You'll likely want some cash on hand for tips for excursion tour guides, your room host, the crew delivering room service and baggage handlers at the pier. While U.S. dollars are generally welcome as tips in ports such as Nassau and Mexico, you'll want local currency for tips and purchases in places like Europe.

Credit cards

In most cases, the purchases you make on the ship will be charged to the credit card you have on file. Maximize your spend by bringing one of the best credit cards for cruises , such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which will award 3 points per dollar for travel charges. For onshore purchases in the ports, you'll want to pack a credit card that charges no foreign transaction fees .

The Disney Visa is another popular credit card to consider if you are sailing with Disney Cruise Line.

Related: Is the Disney Visa worth it?

Disney gift cards

If you want to pay for some — or all — of your onboard purchases, tips added to your account, etc., with discounted Disney gift cards , be sure to pack those along for your trip. You can apply those to your account at the guest services desk.

Bottom line

It's hard to resist the urge to overpack , but there are only a few must-pack essentials for a Disney cruise — or any other cruise for that matter. Pack comfortable clothes and shoes, something to swim in, and necessary identification and funds, and the rest is just gravy. You can always wash clothes on board — or even visit a shop on board or in port for forgotten essentials.

But, if you want to be as prepared as possible, this Disney cruise packing list should set you up for a magical cruise.

Ultimate Disney cruise packing list

Ultimate Disney cruise packing list

Much of packing for a Disney cruise is like any other trip, but there are some specific things you might want to bring that you wouldn’t on most other vacations.

Worried about luggage space in your stateroom? While it’s true that staterooms are generally much smaller than an average hotel room, there is plenty of storage, including space under the bed for luggage.

Going on an Alaskan cruise? That requires different things than your typical Caribbean cruise. Check our our Alaskan cruise packing list for that .

In this article

Clothing Items

You’ll want to pack your normal clothes for the temps which will usually include things like shorts, shirts, capris, PJs, and swimsuits .

disney cruise packing rules

In addition to that, you might want to also include special clothing for themed nights (Pirate Night, semi-formal, formal) and dressy clothes if dining at 1 of the adult-exclusive restaurants.

CONSIDER PACKING:

  • Pants/capris/leggings
  • Suit/dressy clothes  (only if you are planning to dress up for formal night or have a reservation at 1 of the adult-exclusive restaurants)
  • Dress shoes  (for formal night)
  • Flip-flops or sandals
  • Hairbands & accessories
  • Hats/visors
  • Sunglasses w/strap
  • Swimsuit cover-ups

You probably have a set of typical toiletries that you bring on trips, so be sure to include those on a Disney cruise as well.

Disney Cruise Line does provide lotion, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner so no need to pack those unless you have a specific brand you want to use.

disney cruise packing rules

For sunscreen, check to see if any of the places your cruise is going require reef-safe sunscreen to be used.

  • Shower gel  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the shower)
  • Shampoo  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the shower)
  • Hair conditioner  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the shower)
  • Contacts/glasses
  • Contact lens solution & case
  • Sunscreen (might need a reef-safe option in some ports)
  • Lip balm w/sunscreen
  • Face lotion
  • Body lotion  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the bathroom)
  • Make-up remover
  • Nail polish
  • Nail polish remover
  • Tampons/pads
  • Foot powder
  • Shaving cream
  • Nail clippers
  • Hair brush/comb
  • Hair gel/mousse
  • Blow-dryer  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized hair dryers)
  • Travel hair diffuser  (Some ships will have them, but others don’t)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Kids shampoo
  • Kids toothbrushes
  • Kids bath soap
  • Kids hairbrush/comb

Laundry Supplies

You might consider bringing some basic laundry supplies on the cruise, just in case you want to wash some things – laundry detergent, dryer sheets , etc.

You can use your Key to the World room key to pay for the machines.

In addition to that, we always bring a collapsible hamper for dirty clothes which helps keep everything tidy in the small stateroom space.

  • Laundry soap
  • Dryer sheets
  • Stain remover
  • Pop-up hamper
  • Wrinkle release spray

Documents and money

While we used to have to bring hard copies of a lot more documents than we do now, there are still a few things you’ll need to bring.

Those items include your passports (make sure you have at least 6 months until they expire!) and your Port Arrival Form (can also save it to your phone if you don’t want to print it).

disney cruise packing rules

For money, you’ll likely use room charges and credit cards for most things, but cash is needed for tipping anybody who handles your luggage and any tips you want to give your servers and stateroom attendant.

I almost always bring $200 in cash when cruising.

  • Passports/Drivers Licenses/Birth Certificates
  • Hotel confirmations
  • Rental car confirmation
  • Boarding passes
  • Cash/credit cards
  • Dollar bills for tips & tolls
  • Notepad/notebook
  • Insurance cards
  • Membership cards (AAA, DVC)
  • Addresses for postcards

Download the packing list (PDF, Google Doc)

disney cruise packing rules

  • Download the PDF packing list
  • Get the Google Sheet packing list (make a copy from the File menu)

You’ll want to pack your prescription medicine , of course, but also consider packing more over-the-counter meds just in case. You can’t run to a pharmacy or have items delivered on a ship like you can on land, so it can be helpful to have some basics on hand just in case.

disney cruise packing rules

You might want to include sea sickness remedies as some cruises can be rocky.

  • Prescription medications
  • Moleskin (for blisters)
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Anti-itch gel/spray
  • Birth control (or other prophylactic)
  • Pain medicine (like Tylenol, Advil, etc.)
  • Kids pain medicine
  • Motion sickness remedies
  • Sinus/allergy medicine
  • Cough drops

Baby and kid stuff

Be sure to bring all of your basics and in plenty of supply as they won’t be as easy or affordable on the ship.

For little ones, that might also include a stroller which is very common to see onboard as you can do a lot of walking.

disney cruise packing rules

Also make sure your packing for littles includes entertainment that doesn’t require streaming as that can be difficult to do on the ship, even with the highest level of WiFi.

  • Swim diapers
  • Stroller
  • Baby monitor  (Will be inspected and returned if approved)
  • Blanket/toy
  • Board games
  • Handheld games
  • Kids ID tags
  • Outlet covers

Electronics and gadgets

Throw your normal gadgets in your bags, but also consider a few things that are handy when cruising.

That can include:

  • A waterproof lanyard pouch for your phone – if you’ll be getting in the water with your phone
  • USB hub for your stateroom – you can’t bring power strips, but you can bring a USB hub to make it easier to plug in all of your devices
  • DisneyBand+/MagicBand+ – if you already own a MagicBand+, you can bring it on your cruise to use on board. Disney Cruise Line calls them DisneyBand+ but it’s the same as MagicBand+.

  • Ear buds/headphones – with several people in a small space, it can be helpful for everyone to have ear buds or headphones to listen to their own devices. We are big fans of Bluetooth headbands which are easy to wear while in bed.
  • Binoculars – if you want to be able to see things at a distance, bring some binoculars.
  • MagicBand+/DisneyBand+
  • Camera or smartphone
  • Portable charger and extra batteries
  • Travel adapters (if traveling from outside the United States)
  • Waterproof phone case or pouch
  • Earbuds/headphones
  • Charging cords for all devices
  • Battery powered nightlight

Miscellaneous Items

In addition to all of the items above, there are some random things that we would highly suggest bringing.

Here are some ideas:

  • Magnetic hooks – the doors are magnetic (on some ships, the walls are too) so having hooks to use makes it much easier to keep the cabin organized
  • Lanyards – if you’ve cruised with DCL before, you’ll be given a complimentary lanyard in your room. First time cruisers will need to bring their own. This is helpful for carrying your Key to the World card and credit card.
  • Alcohol – Disney Cruise Line allows each person to bring a 6-pack of beer or two 750 mL bottles of wine/champagne. It needs to be brought on board in a carryon bag, not a checked bag.

disney cruise packing rules

  • Big cups – DCL has self-serve beverage stations where you can get unlimited drinks, but they only give you small cups. It’s convenient to bring your own for bigger refills. I like to have 1 cup for soda and an insulated cup for water (fill it before bed and it’ll still be cold by morning).
  • Door decorations – a big part of Disney cruises is the door decor on each stateroom. You can use magnets to decorate, string lights, etc.

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise

When you think of Disney Cruise Line, the first things that come to mind are fun, family, and vacation. While those elements are all present in a Disney Cruise Line experience, once you’ve decided where to book your Disney Cruise , there’s still a lot of planning to do and you’ll need to know what to pack for a Disney cruise.

Cruising with Disney for the first time ? It’s more than just a trip—it’s a magical vacation experience. The sights, the sounds, and even the smells of your cruise ship are all part of what makes a Disney voyage so amazing. If this is your first Disney cruise and you’re ready to set sail on Mickey’s floating paradise, read on for essential packing tips for your Disney Cruise.

Make sure you view our Complete Disney Cruise Packing List to make sure you don’t miss anything — but in the meantime, here are a few specific items to keep in mind.

What You Need on Disney Cruise Ships

Pack multiple swimsuits and coverups.

A Disney Cruise is a vacation, so you should pack multiple swimsuits and swimsuit cover ups. If you’re traveling to warmer climates, bring a lightweight swimsuit that can be layered under your cruise clothes as the weather warms up. In cooler climates, bring a lightweight coverup for lounging around the ship and exploring port stops.

Character Costumes for Children and Adults

Dressing up is a big part of the Disney Cruise experience. For children, pack their favorite princess dress, character outfit of their favorite Disney character, or pirate gear for themed events like pirate night. For adults, many Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears are available to purchase onboard, or you can make your own ahead of time.

Camera and Memory Cards

You may want to take lots of pictures while on your cruise, so don’t forget to pack a camera and extra memory cards. Many phones now have good cameras, so you may not even need a separate camera – just be sure you don’t forget your portable charger.

For each day of your cruise, pack a small beach bag with the essentials: sunscreen, lip balm, hats, sunglasses, swimsuits, reusable water bottle, cell phone, and your room key. This will help you keep track of your belongings and make sure you have everything you need for a fun day in the sun.

Cruise Clothes

Of course, you’ll need clothes for your cruise. Men may want to pack collared shirts and dress pants for formal night dinners in the main dining rooms. Women might prefer to pack dresses or skirts and blouses for dinner attire. Women can also pack dressy shorts and tops. Don’t forget comfortable clothes for exploring ports and relaxing on the ship. If you’re dining at some of the premier adult-exclusive restaurants, check their dress code in advance. Comfortable footwear like flip flops or tennis shoes for around the pool deck is a good idea.

Important Documents

Make sure to pack your passport, cruise documents, and any other important documents in a safe place. You don’t want to lose these items while on your trip. Additionally, you will need a driver’s license or a national ID. During docking days, the cruise ship management might suggest you leave your passport on the ship and carry your driver’s license or ID to avoid problems that may arise if you lose your passport in a new territory.

Medications

If you take any medications, be sure to pack them in your carry-on luggage. You don’t want to lose them en route to your cruise. Moreover, pack any over-the-counter medications, such as seasickness medication, pain relievers, and cold medicine.

Cash and Credit Cards

Disney cruises are completely cashless while onboard – everything is charged back to your stateroom folio account (but you can settle that account with cash if you like). But you may need to spend money while in port during your cruise, so be sure to bring cash and credit cards. Disney ships do not have ATMs onboard, but you might be able to find them in the ports you visit (possibly with high fees). It’s best to withdraw cash before your cruise or use a credit card. You can also bring traveler’s checks to settle your onboard folio – Walt Disney company accepts American Express-issued Travelers Cheques in USD only; your experience using traveler’s checks in port may vary.

Luggage Tags

Be sure to put luggage tags on all your bags. This will help the cruise ship staff know which room your bags should go to. When booking your trip, you will receive special airline-style luggage tags from the cruise line.

Travel Insurance

It’s always a good idea to purchase travel insurance before your cruise. This will help if you need to cancel your trip or have any problems while on your cruise. Also, knowing that you and your family are covered in case of any emergency will give you peace of mind while on your Disney cruise line vacation.

What Not to Pack for a Disney Cruise

over-full-suitcase-over-packing-for-a-disney-trip

  • Prohibited Items: Check Disney Cruise Line’s prohibited items list   for the full list of updated items  including irons, coffee makers, and certain toys.
  • Overpacking: Space is limited, so only bring what you need.

When planning your dream vacation, knowing what not to pack for a Disney Cruise is just as important as what to bring. Your Disney cruise packing list should exclude prohibited items like weapons, firearms, and marijuana products as these can pose safety hazards. Avoid overpacking; space in your stateroom is limited, and unnecessary items only add clutter. Leave behind valuables that you won’t need, as they might create worry rather than enjoyment. Remember, practicality is key when you are  packing for a Disney cruise . Streamlining your luggage by focusing on Disney cruise essentials ensures a hassle-free and enjoyable journey for the entire family. Something to take advantage of is the onboard laundry facility. There is a separate fee but it is less than paying for overweight baggage! Each wash and each dry is $3. There is also detergent available for $1. So just doing one load would only be $7!

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise: Embarkation Day Essentials

When it comes to cruising, you need to prioritize what you’ll be carrying on to the ship. Most cruise lines will take your luggage directly from the airport or cruise terminal to your stateroom. While this makes your arrival to the ship super easy, it also means you won’t see your bags for a few hours—especially with everyone boarding at the same time. Pack these essentials in a day bag so you don’t have to wait to start your vacation!

  • Day bag , backpack or large purse
  • Passport or required documents to board
  • Camera , chargers , memory cards , batteries
  • Contact lenses , contact solution and prescription glasses
  • Swimsuit and cover-up

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise: Disney Gear

Part of the fun of a Disney cruise is dressing up in Disney gear and decking out your stateroom! If traveling with extended family or friends, here’s a cute idea: buy pocket hangers with name tags to hang on the outside of everyone’s doors. During the day, you can leave small gifts or candy inside the pockets so that when everyone returns, they’ll find a fun surprise waiting.

  • Disney Door décor
  • Small gifts for friends
  • Mickey ears
  • Princess dresses
  • Autograph book
  • Disney backpack
  • Disney lanyards to hold your cruise card
  • All Disney apparel

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise: Themed Nights

On nearly all of the Disney cruises, there is a theme night—typically a pirate theme (but double check before you sail). On seven-night cruises, there is oftentimes a formal dinner night as well.

  • Pirate patch
  • Pirate bandana
  • Cocktail dress for women
  • Suit for men
  • Dress shoes

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise: Warm-Weather Cruises

Disney Cruise Line sails to many warm-weather destinations, including the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, Hawaii, and through the Panama Canal. Be prepared with these items.

  • Swimsuits and cover-ups

In this case, packing layers is the best thing you can do. Also consider your excursions when packing. If you’ll be doing activities in the snow, don’t forget to pack your winter gear .

  • Pants or jeans
  • Waterproof and windproof coat
  • Long sleeve base layer shirts
  • Light sweaters

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise: European Cruises

Disney Cruise Line sails to several European destinations, such as Greece, Italy, England, Norway, France, and Ireland. Your family will want to determine the temperature for your European port destinations and pack all the clothing essentials for that climate. Here are a few essentials to get you started.

  • Long skirt and shirts that cover shoulders (some religious institutions require this for entry)

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise: Dining Attire

Dining attire varies by ship, cruise and restaurant, but on most nights, families will eat in the main dining rooms, where attire is cruise casual (slightly dressed up). Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in the main dining rooms.

All of the ships also offer exclusive, adults-only restaurants for an additional charge. These restaurants are more elegant and have a dress code, so be sure to check the dress code for your specific ship and restaurant, as they vary. In general, no flip flops , sneakers , hats , shorts or torn clothing are permitted in the adults-only restaurants.

  • Casual dress
  • Dress pants or slacks
  • Collared shirt
  • Suit jacket (check if required)

What Not to Pack for a Disney Cruise

Disney takes care of everything and everyone. They will even puree your baby’s food! That said, you can and should leave some things behind when leaving for a Disney cruise. Here are some items Disney asks that you leave at home as they are not permitted onboard.

  • Perishable or precooked foods
  • Bottle warmers
  • Pool towels
  • Sporting equipmen t
  • Musical instruments

While your Disney cruise adventure will definitely be packed with action and fun, there will inevitably be some downtime.

This is where the reading material you have with you will come in handy.

Make sure to pack a couple of classic Disney fairy tales for your kids to help them get into the magical spirit too!

If you don’t want the extra weight in your bags, you can always download a few books on your Kindle or iPad.

3. Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Let’s face it, you haven’t spent all that money on a Disney cruise to stay cooped up in your stateroom all day.

You’re going to be spending a lot of time on the deck enjoying the many activities that Disney cruise ships have to offer.

This means that you’ll be spending plenty of time in the sun. In turn, you should make sure to pack sunscreen. We also recommend that you pack two pairs of sunglasses in case one gets damaged or lost.

That way, you can enjoy the sunlight without risking  sunburn  or hurting your eyes.

4. Swimwear

Throughout your Disney cruise, you’ll be doing a lot of swimming.

Therefore, packing a pair of swim trunks or a bathing suit for your trip is a must-do.

We recommend that you have an extra pair on hand too so that you always have something dry to put on.

Additionally, don’t forget to pack cover-up clothing to put on when you’re chilling poolside.

5. Shoes For Every Occasion

Let’s get one thing straight from the get-go. We aren’t saying you should take every pair of shoes you own. In fact, we advise against that.

However, only one pair of shoes is also not enough.

From our experience, the sweet spot is three pairs of shoes. We recommend a pair of sneakers, a pair of dress shoes, and a pair of flip flops or slides.

If you have this trio of footwear, you’ll be ready for every occasion you could find on your Disney cruise.

6. Personal Toiletries

bag of toiletries

Although your room on the Disney cruise ship will be equipped with the essentials, there are still plenty of personal toiletries that you’ll need to bring yourself.

The toiletries you’ll find available in your room will typically be lotion, shampoo, and conditioner.

Here are some other essential toiletries you should remember to pack:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairbrush and comb
  • Razor or shaving machine
  • Feminine hygiene products

Make sure to pack the medication that you or your family members may need during the cruise. In the case of medicines, keep them in your carry-on bag to avoid losing them if your luggage is misplaced.

7. A Disney Costume For Your Child

If you’re taking your child with you, it’s a great idea to pack a costume of their favorite Disney character. The look on your child’s face when you surprise them with it on the ship will be priceless!

You can even go the extra mile and get a matching costume for yourself.

Don’t forget to book an appointment at the  Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique  and watch your child get transformed into a royal prince or princess!

You could also consider a pirate costume for your child to wear on Pirate night!

There are also other themed nights on Disney Cruises that you may want costumes or accessories for, like Merrytime Christmas, Star Wars, and Halloween on the High Seas.

8. Multi-Port Charger

USB Wall Charger, Hootek 2Pack Wall Plug 3-Port USB Charging

Your room on the Disney cruise ship is unlikely to have any more than three power outlets.

If you and your roommate each have several devices with you, these outlets simply won’t be enough to charge them all every night.

This is where a multi port charger will come in handy. It’ll ensure that there’s enough space for everyone to charge their phones, laptops, and other electronics.

9. Backpack

girl wearing a backpack

Your typical day onboard the Disney cruise ship will involve plenty of roaming around.

These ships are quite large, so it would be inconvenient to rush back to your room each time you need one of your belongings.

In turn, having a spacious backpack with you is a great idea.

You can stow in it all of the essential items you’ll need throughout the day and have them on hand at a moment’s notice.

It’s also good to have a backpack with you as a day bag for embarkation day since you don’t get your luggage right away.

You can also use your backpack as a beach bag when you go to Castaway Cay.

10. Laundry Pods/Detergent

Instead of packing a bunch of clothes for your trip, you can do your laundry onboard and always have a clean outfit available.

All Disney cruise ships have laundry facilities for passengers to use. These facilities aren’t a free Disney service, but the cost is minimal.

If you want to make use of these nifty amenities, make sure to bring some laundry pods or detergent with you.

11. Formal Clothes

Every Disney cruise has a formal night where you dress up and go to dinner in one of the main dining rooms. You’ll want a formal outfit like dress pants or a dress to wear to it.

Depending on the length of your cruise there can be multiple formal nights during your vacation.

You can contact Disney Cruise Line ahead of time to see how many formal nights your trip will have.

There are certain items you can’t forget to add to your Disney cruise packing list .

These items include swimwear, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a backpack. You’ll also want to pack suitable footwear and any personal toiletries you may need.

The most important thing to remember to pack is your appetite for fun. That’s because you’ll have tons of it on your Disney adventure!

I hope these travel tips help you prepare for your amazing Disney vacation!

What To Pack for a Disney Cruise: Complete Packing List

disney cruise packing rules

This post contains affiliate links. Read the full disclosure here .

Packing for a cruise is unlike packing for any other trip. If you are taking your first cruise, there can be a lot of uncertainty. What is the right cruise attire? What items need to go in what bags? (If you’re confused by this question it will make sense in a minute.) What items might you want that would have never thought of? If you are planning a Disney Cruise, here’s our best guide on what to pack.

Essential Items

First of all, there are some essential items you’ll need to make sure you have. Like, you won’t even be able to get on the ship without some of these.

Essential Documents

These are going to be the documents you need to get yourself and your stuff on the ship and to take care of any issues you might have during your trip. My favorite way to pack these is to get an accordion folder like this and keep everything together in my backpack.

  • Cruise documents
  • Driver’s Licenses
  • Cruise Luggage Tags (sent by Disney)
  • Travel Insurance Information
  • Medical Insurance Information
  • Cash (just a few small bills for tips for room service or baggage handlers at port)

You’ll want to make sure you have any prescription medications of course. And even though they sell some over the counter medications on Disney Cruise ships, I always make sure to pack my own.

  • Prescription Medications
  • Over the Counter Medications (pain killers, stomach meds, etc.)
  • Medicine for Sea-Sickness or Nausea
  • Aloe Lotion (in case of sunburn!)

Sun Protection

On a cruise you definitely need sun protection. While a lot of your cruise will have activities inside, there is also the pool deck and ports you will stop at. And if you are sailing in the Bahamas or Caribbean, the sun can be brutal.

Disney Cruise Attire: Clothes to Pack

Figuring out what clothes you will want for your cruise can be a challenge! Especially as you are moving through different destinations, might have themed dinner nights, and might want to change clothes for different activities during the day.

When packing for a cruise, I like to think of the day in three parts:

  • Morning/Daytime (a casual outfit, like shorts and a t-shirt)
  • Activity time! (swimsuits, or whatever other clothes I might need for a certain activity)
  • Dinner (something a little dressier/nicer than what I wore earlier in the day)

While Disney Cruises do have themed nights like Pirate Night, participation in these themed nights is completely optional. Most nights, you’ll find “Cruise Casual” listed as the dinner attire, which pretty much means anything goes (except, you know, don’t wear a swimsuit to dinner). So you definitely don’t have to bring a different outfit for dinner.

Here’s a good cruise attire packing list to get you going! Obviously add your own clothes here based on personal preferences. And if you are taking a cruise somewhere non-tropical (like a Disney Alaskan Cruise!) you’ll want to make sure you pack the clothes that are appropriate for that different kind of weather.

  • Shorts — enough to wear a pair each day
  • T-shirts — at least one for each day
  • Dresses — optional for dinner
  • Pants — at least one pair because it can sometimes get chilly
  • Dressier shirts — optional for dinner
  • Light jacket — Again, it can sometimes be chilly in the mornings and evenings, or even in the restaurants.
  • Shoes — I usually bring a pair of sandals I like to walk around in, a pair of dressier sandals, and a pair of flip flops. If you plan on working out or running the Castaway Cay 5K, bring tennis shoes too.
  • Socks — Always good to have, and on the new Disney Wish you need them for the inflatable Incredi-course.
  • Undergarments — obviously
  • Swimsuits — at least two
  • Swimsuit coverups
  • Rash Guards — The sun can be brutal, so I like to have a rash guard with me at Castaway Cay I can throw on if I feel like I’m getting too much sun.
  • Dressier clothes — If you are planning on dining at Palo, Remy, or Enchanté, there is a dress code.

Toiletries to Pack

Obviously, your toiletry kit is up to you and your personal preferences and routines. But here’s a list to get you started. Also, I really love having a hanging toiletry bag like this , because I can hang it on the towel rack next to the sink and not have my stuff taking up so much precious counter space.

Also, note that shampoo, body wash, conditioner, and body lotion are NOT on this list. Disney Cruise Line provides these in each stateroom. Right now, they are from the beloved H2O+ line, which is really incredible. In the future, this line is eventually going to be discontinued, but I’m sure Disney will restock the ships with something equally great. So there’s not need to take up room in your bag with shower essentials.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Skin care products
  • Hair products
  • Straightener or curling iron
  • Contacts/glasses/contact solution

Convenient Items You Might Want

There are some items you might want to pack that are just going to make your life on a cruise easier. I wouldn’t call these essentials , but once you use them on a cruise ship you may find that they are must-haves!

  • Lanyard — To wear around your neck with your room key and ID in (often times when you leave the room these are the only things you really need).
  • Magnetic hooks — The doors in your room are metal, so these hooks can be really useful. I like to put one on the back of the room door and keep our lanyards there so we don’t forget them when we leave the room.
  • Refillable water bottle — You can use this on the ship, but also when you leave the ship for excursions!
  • Zip-top bags or dry bags — To put wet swimsuits or clothes in when needed.
  • Portable charger — This is especially great to have during excursions or on Castaway Cay if you are taking lots of photos and videos with your phone.
  • Excursion bag — Bring some kind of beach bag/tote bag/backpack to take on your excursions or on Castaway Cay to put your phone, water, essentials in.
  • Non-perishable snacks — While Disney has lots of food everywhere, I sometimes felt like there was a food lull mid-morning when I just really needed a granola bar. You can also bring your own movie snacks instead of buying them at the theater.
  • Books — I mean, hello, this is a travel blog for bookworms. So obviously.

Fun Disney Cruise Items to Pack

To make your Disney Cruise a little more magical, there are some items you can pack for extra fun!

  • Door Decor — Lots of families decorate their stateroom doors with custom magnets. I also love doing this because it makes it easier to find your room! (You can find lots of options on Etsy!)
  • Autograph Book — For the kiddos to get autographs from their favorite characters.
  • Pirate Night attire — Get into the theme with pirate clothes. Definitely not essential though, and on our cruise they provided everyone with a bandana to wear at dinner.
  • Beach necessities — If you have kiddos, you might want to bring a few easy to pack beach toys. Also…goggles!
  • Character costumes — If your kiddos are really into a certain character or princess, let them bring a costume to make it even more fun for them!
  • Pins for trading — If you are into Disney pin trading, you can trade on the ship!

Packing Your Embarkation Day Bag

When you arrive at the Disney Cruise terminal, you will hand your luggage over to be loaded onto the ship, but you will keep a carry on bag with you. Because it can take several hours for your luggage to show up in your room, you’ll want to make sure you have some essential items in your carry on bag.

  • Essential documents (IDs, cruise documents, etc.)
  • Medications (Pack any medications you might need between arriving on the ship and getting your luggage.)
  • Swimsuits and cover ups (If you board the ship early, you can go ahead and get in the pool even before the ship leaves port!)
  • Change of clothes (Your luggage may not arrive until after your dinner time, so pack a change of clothes for dinner if you are going to want it.)
  • Portable charger (You will likely have some time on the ship before you can get into your room, so pack a portable charger just in case!)

disney cruise packing rules

Packing for Castaway Cay

When you get off the ship at Castaway Cay, you want to make sure you have anything you might need during the day. You don’t want to have to make the trek back to the ship if you forget something!

  • Room Key and ID
  • Swimsuits and Coverups (Honestly, just wear these all day on the island.)
  • Medications
  • Beach toys, goggles, etc.
  • Portable phone charger
  • Refillable water bottles (stay hydrated!!!)
  • Wet bags/zip-top bags for wet clothes, swimsuits, etc.
  • A few dollars (if you want to mail a postcard at the post office)

disney cruise packing rules

Packing for Debarkation

When you pack up to leave your cruise ship, Disney has a service where you can put your luggage out the night before debarkation and then just pick it up in the cruise terminal the next morning. This saves you having to lug all your bags to breakfast the next morning and off the ship.

If you want to do this, you usually just have to have your luggage out in the hallway with the appropriate luggage tag (they will leave them in your room) by about 10 p.m. the night before.

Here are a few pointers for packing for this.

  • If you are packing up before dinner, leave out your pajamas.
  • Leave out an outfit for the next day. And don’t forget shoes!
  • Leave room in your carry-on to put your dirty clothes/pajamas you are still wearing when your luggage goes out.
  • Try to leave out just the essential toiletries so the rest can go in your regular luggage.
  • Make sure you don’t pack your essential documents in your regular luggage!
  • Leave out medications.

What NOT to Pack for Your Disney Cruise

Here’s what you shouldn’t or don’t need to pack on your Disney Cruise, from things you just won’t need, to items that are prohibited.

Things You Won’t Need

  • Towels — Beach towels are provided both on on the pool deck and at Castaway Cay. When you are getting off the ship at Castaway Cay, make sure to pick up towels before you take the tram or go down the walking path.
  • Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Body Lotion — These are provided in your stateroom (and they are great!). So unless you need something specific, there’s no need to have these take up room in your luggage.

Items Prohibited on a Disney Cruise

  • Weapons of any kind
  • Illegal drugs
  • Homemade or perishable food
  • Bottle warmers
  • Musical Instruments
  • Sporting equipment
  • Coolers (unless needed for medical, dietary, or baby food reasons)
  • Over the door hanging organizers

Find more details about prohibited items here.

Dining room dress code.

disney cruise packing rules

I usually pack outfits that I would wear to a dinner out with friends --- something a little dressier than what I'd wear to the grocery store.

Adult Dining at Enchante, Palo, PALO Steakhouse and Remy (Specialty Restaurants) Enchante, Palo Steakhouse, Palo & Remy are for adults only and have stricter dress codes to preserve their ambiance. REMY Remy offers brunch, dessert, and dinner reservations.

At dinner, this is the dress code:

  • Men : Jacket (such as a sports, suit or tuxedo jacket) is required, with dress pants/slacks and shoes. Ties are optional. No jeans, shorts, sandals, flip-flops or tennis shoes.
  • Ladies : Cocktail dress, evening dress, pant suit or skirt/blouse are required. No jeans, shorts, capri pants, sandals, flip-flops or tennis shoes.

During brunch and dessert, this is the dress code:

  • Men : Jacket is optional but dress pants and a nice shirt are required. No jeans, shorts, capri pants, sandals, flip-flops or tennis shoes.
  • Ladies : Dress or pantsuit is required. No jeans, shorts, capri pants, sandals, flip-flops or tennis shoes.
  • Men : Jacket is optional but dress pants and a nice shirt are recommended. Jeans in good condition (no holes) are also okay. No shorts, hats, capri pants, sandals, flip-flops or tennis shoes.
  • Ladies : Dress, skirt or pants are recommended. Jeans in good condition (no holes) are also okay. No shorts, hats, capri pants, sandals, flip-flops or tennis shoes.

Dress-Up Nights

Here is the typical schedule of "Formal Nights" and "Pirate Nights" on most Disney Cruise sailings:

3-Night Cruises:

  • One "Cruise Casual" night
  • One Pirate Night
  • One Formal Night (jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women)

4-Night Cruises:

  • Two "Cruise Casual" Nights

7-Night Cruises:

  • Four "Cruise Casual" Nights
  • One Pirate Night (or other theme, such as Star Wars or Marvel)
  • One Semi-Formal night

Is It Required to Dress Up for Formal Night or Pirate Night?

No, both are optional. In my experience, however, most people do participate in some way! On Formal Night, some cruisers go all out and wear tuxedos and ball gowns. Others put on khakis and polo shirts. There are definitely those that don't, and that is totally fine.

If you just want something simple, try a bandana .

I definitely recommend joining in the fun!

What I Wear Each Day

When I’m on a tropical cruise, I pack the following for each day :

  • Day Outfit : shorts and a t-shirt or a sundress.
  • Pool Outfit : swimsuit with coverup
  • Night Outfit : either nice jeans/blouse, a casual dress/sundress, or a pant jumpsuit - all with a sweater to keep me warm. (Of course if it’s a dress up night or formal night, I'll wear a pirate outfit or formal attire.)

It's Easy to Do a Quick Change

I love cruises because you are always less than 5 minutes away from your stateroom. Because it’s so close, it’s easy to run back to your room for a quick change or refresh.

Mix and Match

The trick is to not over-pack and still have plenty of options. This is where mix and matching comes in handy.

Example: You could wear your day sundress as a swim cover-up and then a day or two later wear that same sundress as a night outfit with a cute sweater.

I try NOT to do laundry when I’m on vacation. So...

I tend to wear a pair of shorts or a pair of jeans a couple of times during the week with different tops. Since I change often during the day ( see above ), I'm only wearing an outfit for 3-5 hours and not the whole day. You can get away with wearing them twice without washing in between. The same goes for tops too.

I pack 3 swimsuits so I can let my damp suits dry for a day. I was surprised how often I put on a swimsuit. A lot of excursions at tropical spots are water based and we often like to lay out by the pool, take a dip in the hot tub, or float down the Aquaduck.

I also like to bring several different swimsuit cover-ups (you know, just to mix things up).

Disney Cruise Packing List Suitcases

It Gets Chilly at Night

If you're like me and you get cold easily, I can’t emphasize enough to pack a couple of sweaters or jackets.

Even my husband (who doesn’t tend to get cold) thinks it’s a bit chilly at night. I suggest taking a sweater with you once you get dressed up for dinner and keep it with you for the rest of the evening.

Shoes! Shoes! Shoes!

Shoes take up a lot of space, so minimize! Again, mix and matching is your friend.

You can change up your outfits with the type of shoes you wear with it. You could dress up your night sundress with a pair of heels instead of sandals or flip flops.

  • Ladies : I suggest 1-2 pairs of dressy shoes, 1-2 pairs of sandals, a pair of flip flops, and a good pair of walking/tennis shoes.
  • Men : I suggest packing 1 pair of dress shoes, 1 pair of flip flops, a pair of sneakers and/or comfy walking shoes.

These are my go-to items. You won't find me on any Disney Cruise without them.

1. Accordion Document Organizer

Why I love it? Everyone needs an accordion document organizer .

No more of this... "Which pocket did I put that in?"

Keep all of your important documents in one place. While on the trip, you'll always know where your passport, reservation numbers, and other travel papers are located. No more stress of digging through your suitcase, searching for a particular document.

Add your keepsakes such as nightly Navigators, Animators Palate drawings, etc in one folder without getting wrinkled or folded.

Accordion Document Organizer

2. Official Disney Character Autograph Book

Why I love it? If you have young kids you need this Disney Character Autograph Book !

Character Meet and Greets are such a fun part of your Disney Cruise. Goofy, Mickey, Donald, Minnie, Ariel, Belle, Elsa, Cinderella, Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain America, Captain Hook (that's a lot of Captains!), you name it! Your favorite Disney character will probably be on-board with you.

Take advantage of the chance to meet your favorite princess or hero while on the ship. Character lines are much shorter on DCL than in the parks.

Have an autograph book and sharpie for each child. Each Disney character has a distinct signature and having them sign your autograph makes such a fun keepsake from your Disney vacation.

Disney Official Autograph Book

3. Towel Clips

Why I love it? It's so relaxing to bask in the sun at the pool deck on a Day at Sea.

In my experience, however, it gets a little windy up there.

Throw a few of these towel clips into your beach bag and you'll easily secure your beach towel to your deck chair, no problem!

If you plan on spending any time in a beach chair, you'll be very glad you have these.

Towel Clips

4. Beach Tote Bag

Why I love it? You're going to need a beach-worthy tote bag to carry some sunscreen, sunglasses, bottle of water and maybe a magazine or two.

Material is premium leatherette with a top zip closure and inner zip pocket to keep the sand of Castaway Cay out of unwanted places.

Minnie Mouse Tote Bag

Why I love it?

A Disney Cruise will most likely be one of the highlights of you life! Plan ahead to document all those wonderful memories.

My husband takes both his digital camera ( Canon 60D ) and a GoPro on our Disney Cruises. He uses the DSLR camera for more staged photo opportunities (like Formal Night family portraits).

Most of the time, however, he prefers to carry the GoPro with him because it is so much lighter, compact and more versatile.

It is easy to pack due to its size and weight. You can strap it to your head, chest or put on a selfie stick for live action video. The wide angle of the GoPro makes it great for family selfies.

If you're going underwater (swimming with sting rays, snorkeling, etc), a GoPro with the right accessories is the ideal choice.

All in all, I love the GoPro to help make the perfect Disney Cruise travel video .

6. Mickey Mouse Luggage

American Tourister meets Mickey Mouse!

If you're going to pack up the kids and get on a big floating shrine to Mickey Mouse, what better way to do it than with some Mickey Mouse luggage .

There are also some cute  Minnie Mouse luggage options too!

PS - get more Disney luggage ideas here .

7. Power Bank / Portable Charger (for my phone)

This handy-dandy little gadget will charge up to three devices (in my case, my iPhone, my husband's iPhone, and one more iPhone).

Not only does it charge them. It charges them FAST!

What NOT to Pack for Your Disney Cruise

Now that I told you what to pack, here’s what NOT to pack. Everyone on-board a Disney cruise must comply with specific safety guidelines mandated by U.S. Customs and Port Security.

Please do NOT bring:

Firearms, ammo, knives, swords, whips or any other types of weapons are off limits.

Perishable Food

Homemade, precooked or other perishable items are not allowed.

Illegal Drugs & Marijuana

Illegal drugs inclusive of medically prescribed and synthetic marijuana are prohibited.

Some Other Random Stuff

Don't bring drones, irons, bottle warmers, sporting equipment, balloons, candles, musical instruments. No coolers, except for those carrying medications, baby food or items related to dietary constraints.

Beach Towels

DCL will provide beach towels to take at every port and at the pools.

A hair dryer is provided in your stateroom.

Pack and Play Crib / Stroller / Diaper Genie

Disney Cruise Line provides all of these. Read this article for all the details.

Power Strip

I guess they don't want us blowing the circuits in our staterooms.

Soap, Shampoo & Conditioner

Disney Cruise Line has its own line of hair care and soap. Called H20 Plus. It's awesome. They provide these free in your stateroom.

What travel documents do i need for a disney cruise.

It’s best to travel with your US passport if you are leaving from a U.S. port and then returning to that same port.

You can use a birth certificate to board the ship, but if you have an emergency in a port of call in a different country (like the Bahamas, for example), you’ll need a passport to travel home. Obviously, this isn’t a likely scenario, but I like to carry my passport just in case.

Disney Cruise Line puts specific passport guidelines on their website for each sailing/destination. It’s always a good idea to read their advice.

Do I need a passport for a Disney Cruise?

How Many Pieces of Luggage Can I Bring?

Each guest is allowed two pieces of luggage plus one additional carry on (about the size of an airline carry-on).

The less bags the better, as you have to store your suitcases in your stateroom.

There is ample room beneath your bed for a reasonable number of suitcases, even the large size. Under the bed clearance is a little more than 13 inches. I have found that all of our luggage (4-5 big pieces) will fit comfortably under the bed.

You can stack suitcases inside each other if you have bigger and smaller luggage.

Under the bed clearance is about 13 inches.

Can I Bring Alcohol on a Disney Cruise?

Thinking about saving some money on booze by bringing your own alcohol on the ship? Here I'll explain the basics, but I've made a full guide that can be found here .

Each guest 21 years or older can bring up to 2 bottles of wine/champagne (must be unopened) or six beers on board at the start of your sailing. The guest is able to bring the same amount on the ship at each port of call as well.

All alcoholic beverages must be carried-on, not stowed in checked luggage. Alcohol found in your checked bags will be removed and stored by the Disney Cruise Lines staff. Hard liquor and spirits aren’t allowed.

You can bring your own wine/champagne to the main dining rooms. The staff will charge a corking fee of $25 per bottle and will store it for you to drink each night at dinner.

Learn the tips and tricks when it comes to bringing alcohol aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship and how you can save money on drinks.

Can I Ship Supplies to Port Canaveral to Pick Up?

It used to be that you could mail a package to yourself at Port Canaveral. Disney’s stewards would then deliver it to your stateroom. There used to be a limit of one mailed box per stateroom. Your package had to arrive 24 hours before your sail-away time.

Unfortunately, this service is no longer available.

2024 Disney Cruise Packing List: Essentials to Pack & What Not to Bring

Disney Cruise Packing List

If you have ever been on a Disney Parks vacation before, you know there are essentials that you must pack no matter what. The same goes for a Disney cruise which is why a Disney cruise packing list is important. The essentials though are going to be slightly different because it is a different type of vacation with vastly different activities.

Going on any Disney vacation is exciting, but a Disney cruise has to be at the top of the list for vacations. Not only do you get a relaxing and remote vacation, but everything is Disney-fied! It really is the best of both worlds, especially if you are traveling with people who like Disney but not the stress that comes with the theme parks. You can see our Disney World vs. Disney Cruise guide for a full comparison if you are deciding how you'd like to spend your next vacation.

The other difference is that at Disney parks, most of the time you are dressing for comfort in the heat and walkability in your footwear. When embarking on your Disney cruise, you could be spending four days going to the Caribbean or a two-week-long Alaskan adventure. These two cruises are going to require many different items for you to be comfortable which we all list on our Disney Cruise packing list. Through our Disney Cruise packing list, we will try to be inclusive of all cruise needs as well as address what you may need for specific locations.

In this planning guide:

Disney Cruise Packing List- Boarding Day

disney cruise line boarding day

Boarding the cruise ship is better known as “Embarkation Day,” and many first-time cruisers don’t know or underestimate the items they need for the day for their Disney Cruise packing list.

When you get to the cruise terminal, Disney Cruise Line luggage handlers will load your luggage for you onto the boat and into your cabin or stateroom (this is your “hotel” room on the ship). While this is great because you don’t have to worry about boarding the boat with it, it also means you will be away from your belongings for most of the day. It could be late into the day by the time the crew members actually deliver your belongings.

When you board the cruise, there are many activities you can participate in that will help determine what you need for the day. Guests can eat, explore the ship, go swimming, attend welcome activities, and visit your room.

It is incredibly important when packing for your cruise that you make sure you have a bag packed with all the necessities for the first day that you won't check. We particularly like a backpack or day bag like this one as it squishes down to save space to carry with you. Not to worry though because we have you covered with the essentials you need.

Boarding Day Disney Cruise Packing List

Must have items:

What to Wear on Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line Packing List Alaska

Living on a cruise ship for 4-10 days can have you questioning, what clothes should I pack for my Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Line suggests that guests should pack clothing that will allow them to dress comfortably for vacation. Guests should also bring the appropriate attire for dinners and Port Adventures.

A lot of the clothing that you will pack is going to depend upon your destination. If you are cruising somewhere warm, then shorts, t-shirts, and dresses will probably make up most of your wardrobe. If you are cruising somewhere colder, then jeans, sweatshirts, and jackets may be the go-to. We also always end up doing some workout during the sailing to burn off the endless good food that you can enjoy while onboard. Here's a look at the workout facility onboard the Disney Wonder ship.

disney wonder work out room

Disney Cruise Line pools are all heated, so a bathing suit is recommended no matter which cruise destination you are sailing to. You may want to pack more than one bathing suit if you are going to a warmer destination and have water excursions planned.

Generally for Disney Cruise Line we recommend the same thing that we do for all Disney vacations – wear clothes that are comfortable but nice looking. Throughout your trip you'll want to be capturing photos and making memories. By no means are we saying to wear a collar the whole time, but maybe leave the t-shirt with the holes in it at home. You will be seen by hundreds of other people on the ship each day and have photos from this trip forever.

Below we dive into more of what you should wear on a Disney Cruise for the various activities on the ship and off.

Disney Cruise Line Dining

When dining on a Disney Cruise, there are multiple dining experiences that each have their own dress code. Also, depending on the length of the cruise there can be specialty dining events.

Before packing, make sure to check what dining experiences you have booked to ensure you have the right level of dress.

3-night cruises:

One cruise casual night One pirate night themed deck party One optional “dress-up night”

4-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual One pirate night themed deck party One optional dress-up night Final night is cruise casual

7-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual One pirate night or other themed deck party 3 additional cruise casual nights One formal and one semi-formal night

Typically we will wear the same clothes we wore to dinner to the show afterwards because there isn't really enough time to change without being rushed.

Disney Cruise Packing List- Dining

Cruise casual dining attire is in the majority of the dining restaurants. This simply means no swimwear or tank tops. It is completely optional to dress up.

What to Wear on Disney Cruise Formal Night

On a Disney Cruise, formal attire means more dressed up than your cruise casual. This would be attire that makes you feel a little more fancy than just your normal grabbing a bite to eat. Cocktail dresses, skirts, button-down shirts, jackets, a tie, are all acceptable forms of formal attire on a Disney Cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Specialty Themed Nights

On almost all sailings in the Caribbean and Bahamas, as well as some other destinations, Disney hosts a Pirate Night for guests. On this night, guests can choose to dress as a pirate and there is a special deck party. Disney will give every guest a pirate-themed bandana to wear on Pirate Night.

If you didn’t bring anything with you and want to dress up, the onboard shops will sell full pirate costumes for children as well as faux hook hands, eye patches, and other related accouterments. Guests are welcome to dress up how little or how much they want to with the themed night.

Pirate Night Disney Cruise Line

Pixar nights happen on most seven-night Alaska cruises. Again, dressing up is optional, but many guests will typically adorn a Pixar-themed shirt.

Adult Exclusive Dining

Disney understands that adults love the Disney Cruises, but sometimes they need to have an adult-only experience.

Each cruise ship has adult-exclusive restaurants. These restaurants are elegant dining experiences and the dress code is formal or semi-formal (dress casual is permitted). Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted at all.

disney cruise line palo restaurant

Adults-only restaurants will vary depending on the ship. Below are the restaurants available in the Disney Cruise Line fleet:

Palo: An elegant northern Italian-inspired dining venue aboard the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Remy: A love letter to the City of Lights, serving up sophisticated French cuisine aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Palo Steakhouse: Acclaimed Italian cuisine is paired with world-class steakhouse fare aboard the Disney Wish. Enchanté: A romantic dining venue featuring French-inspired delicacies aboard the Disney Wish.

Disney states that “guests are requested to dress in a manner consistent with the restaurant’s atmosphere. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended.” Though a dressed-up casual look is now permitted, we really recommend that you take the opportunity to get dressed up to really enjoy the fancier meal away from the kids and other families.

Can I Bring My Own Food and Drink?

At Disney Parks it is not uncommon for guests to bring their own food and drinks to the hotel rooms as well as the parks to help save costs but also for the familiar foods that help keep your body happy.

With a Disney Cruise, guests can also bring their own food and drinks, but there are rules and limits. The first and major rule is that all food and beverages must be packed in your carry-on item. This is why we listed it on your boarding day packing essentials.

If you want to bring food aboard, Disney Cruise Line asks for guests to follow the following packing restrictions

Non Perishable snack foods packed in sealed, original packaging. All items must either be consumed prior to returning to your home port or remain unopened.

Breast milk brought on board in carry-on luggage only.

Coolers no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 12″, as carry-on luggage for storing medications, baby food or items related to dietary restrictions only.

Alcohol & Other Beverages

On a Disney Cruise all sodas, coffees and teas are included in the cost of the cruise with meals and at the beverage stations. Bar drinks, beer, wine, smoothies, specialty coffees and bottled water are an additional charge.

Guests 21 and older boarding the cruise are able to bring two bottles of unopened wine/champagne or six beers at the beginning of your sailing. You will need to provide your own corkscrew to open the bottles if you plan to enjoy it in your room. You can also purchase additional alcohol at port when you are on land. Each time that you go to port you can bring on an additional six pack or two bottles of wine per person.

If you bring your wine/champagne to the main dining rooms, there is a $25 corkage fee per bottle brought to dinner. The Cast Members will store your bottle for you to drink each night at dinner.

Port Excursions Disney Cruise Line Packing List

Depending on your cruise destination, you will be able to book excursions at your port to fully experience the destinations that you cruised to.

For Bahamian Cruises, Disney usually books a day at the Disney Owned island, Castaway Cay. Guests will want to pack sunscreen, bathing suits, water-bottles, maybe some sand toys, and anything else you may need to enjoy a day at the beach. These are some perfect water-bottles that are good for bringing along with you.

During Alaskan Disney cruises , the beach and your bathing suit will most likely not be used when you get off the ship. Many cruisers have needed multiple jackets, hats, and gloves depending on the time of year.

The best thing to pack for port excursions is to look at the Disney Website and what they recommend for your excursion attire.

Disney Items

Mickey Ears: No Disney trip would be complete without a pair of Mickey Ears. Disney has specific cruise line merchandise, including ears to buy, but check out the official Disney ears here on Shop Disney or find other licensed Disney Mickey ears that cost less on Amazon here .

Princess Dresses & Costumes: There are many character meet and greets available on board the cruise ships. Your princes and princesses may want to bring their dresses or costumes aboard the ship for pictures. For costumes the following toys are allowed: Store-bought light sabers, Plastic toy “pirate” swords & Plastic store-bought toy “Mjolnir” hammers (Thor's hammer) You can find good deals on all of these here .

Disney Apparel: Everyone in your party will find themselves wanting a Mickey shirt at some point. Make it easier on yourself and buy these items ahead of time! Check Shop Disney, Amazon, and Etsy for some great items.

Autograph book: Don’t forget an autograph book for your kids (or you!) to collect character autographs! Don't forget a fat pen.  There are some great options on Amazon!

disney door magnets for packing list

Disney Magnets: Almost everyone on a Disney cruise decorates their stateroom door with personalized magnets. The purpose of the door decorations: it makes it easier to find your room in a long hallway of similar looking doors and it is super fun. You have to see these Captain Mickey and Minnie door magnets that are surprisingly affordable. Feel free to be a little extra in your decorations. No tape or adhesive is allowed, only magnets.

Disney Cruise Packing List For Traveling with Babies

Children over 6 months of age are eligible to sail on cruises. Having items that are comfortable to them and that you are used to using every day will be incredibly important.

If you happen to forget something, there are typically some items available in the on board shops, but it is always best to try to pack your own.

Items you may want to bring: Bottles/sippy cups, Diapers, Wipes, Pacifiers, Baby food, Breastmilk/formula, Swim diapers, Baby carrier.

Pack n play/Cribs are available on board. A limited number of approved bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers are available upon request through Guest Services on board.

Disney Cruise List Packing List- Misc Items

verandah room view disney cruise line alaska

There are a variety of Disney Cruise Line packing list items that you should bring to have just in case or to improve your stay in your state room.

Bag or backpack to carry with you: You don’t want to drag your entire suitcase with you around the ship or want to have to constantly go back to your room when you need something. Make sure to pack a small bag that you can carry essentials (hand sanitizer, chapstick, sunscreen, bathing suit cover-up, etc) around the ship.

Camera: If you have a professional camera, decide whether you want to bring it along.

Battery Pack: You may want to bring a battery pack for your phone or other devices. As we mention above, we swear by the Anker PowerCore Portable charger . This charger holds 3-4 phone charges, is light, small, and affordable. Buy it here >

Ponchos: When traveling, you never know when rain is going to hit. Some of the excursions you book may also get you wet. Having your own poncho can help to keep you dry. You can order these on Amazon.

Lanyards: Lanyards work great for holding trading pins or your Key to the World Card. This card is used to get into the rooms and make purchases on board. See best lanyard options .

Your own glow sticks: Partying on the cruise deck late at night can be a ton of fun. Add even more fun with glow sticks. You can order these here.

Sunscreen & Aloe Vera: This is important- no one wants a sunburn on vacation. And sunscreen will cost more on the ship. You can never have enough.

Seasickness Medication/ Band/ Patch: Many people don’t know that they get seasick until they are aboard a cruise ship. I never get seasick, carsick, or have issues on roller coasters, but we sailed during a tropical storm once and I was incredibly sick. Having some sort of seasickness medication, band, or patch can be helpful in those just in case moments. Check out these options on Amazon.

Chapstick or lip balm: You would be surprised at how quickly your lips get chapped. Buy chapstick here .

Small pack of Kleenex: You don’t want to have to run to the bathroom or your stateroom every time you need to blow your nose. Grab a travel tissue pack to keep in your ship bag. Buy Kleenex travel packs here .

Anti-bacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer: Keep the germs away and buy travel hand sanitizer here.

Medications: Don’t forget to pack some pain reliever and tums/ Pepto Bismol! Always good to have just in case. Make sure it is in the original packaging.

Ear plugs: If you’re jammed in a room with others, bringing ear plugs can be a great choice. I prefer to bring a bulk bag and particularly like these earplugs with the connecting cord so you don't lose them.

Anything you need to make your child comfortable: Make sure to access the sleeping situation of your children before leaving home. Even the littlest thing to improve the amount or quality of sleep is valuable.

Books: During the day you are on the cruise ship there are a ton of activities that you can take part in (trivia, spa, swimming, games, athletics, etc.), but there may be times you want some down time to relax. Grabbing a book to read may be the best way to enjoy a relaxing day at sea.

What Not To Bring- Disney Cruise Packing List

The Disney Cruise Line has provided a list of items guests should not include in their packing. This list is compiled with the safety guidelines that are mandated by the US Customs and Port Security, so it is important for guests to leave these items at home. These are some of the items on the list:

  • Diving Equipment
  • Flammable Liquids & Combustible Substances
  • Restraining devices
  • Perishable items
  • Electrical Appliances (heating pads, power strips, diffusers, blenders, streaming devices, bottle warmers, irons, etc.)
  • Illegal narcotics/drugs, medically prescribed marijuana, drug paraphernalia

  • Wheeled Recreational Equipment
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers, over-the-door hooks
  • Weapons: Firearms and ammunition, explosives, knives, sword, dagger, bullwhip

Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to seize and secure any item deemed to be dangerous or pose a security or safety risk, so it is better to just leave these items at home than try to sneak them in.

 essential documents and necessities.

This section might be the most important section of the Disney Cruise Packing List! Make sure you don’t skip it!

  Passports, Identification, and Travel Documents

Before you embark on your Disney Cruise, ensuring you have all the necessary identification and travel documents is crucial. For international cruises, a valid passport is helpful. Sometimes you can use a birth certificate but double-check to ensure you have all the documents you need for your Disney Cruise. Even if your cruise remains within your home country, having a passport is still advisable as it is a universally accepted form of identification.

Double-check the expiration date on your passport and ensure it remains valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date. Some countries have specific entry requirements, so having a valid passport is essential for a smooth sailing experience.

In addition to your passport, bring a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license) for domestic cruises and any other identification documents you might need during your journey.

You’ll also want to ensure you have your credit cards and any cash you need. Pack them in a safe place where you’ll easily be able to find them. Please make sure the bag you put them in will be with you at all times.

Disney Cruise Line Reservation Confirmation and Other Paperwork

Print out all the necessary paperwork for your Disney Cruise reservation and keep it in a safe and easily accessible place. This includes your cruise tickets, booking confirmations, and any pre-purchased shore excursions or special event tickets.

Having physical copies of these documents can be helpful in case of any unexpected technological glitches or connectivity issues. However, you can also store digital copies on your smartphone or other electronic devices as a backup.

Important Contact Numbers and Emergency Information

Before setting sail, make a list of important contact numbers and emergency information. This list should include:

  • Disney Cruise Line contact number: This will be essential for any last-minute inquiries or changes before or during the cruise.
  • Emergency contact information: Share your cruise itinerary and ship details with a trusted friend or family member who will not be joining you on the trip. This way, they can be reached in case of an emergency.
  • Important phone numbers for credit card companies or banks: Notify your financial institutions about your travel plans to avoid any issues with your cards while onboard or during excursions.
  • Medical information: If you have any allergies or medical conditions or require specific medications, it’s vital to always carry this information with you. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the ship’s medical facilities and procedures.

Clothing and Attire

When it comes to clothing for your Disney Cruise packing list, versatility is key. You’ll want to be prepared for a range of activities, from exploring the ship to dining at upscale restaurants and attending themed events. Let’s dive into the essential clothing items you should pack for a magical and stylish voyage:

Casual Daywear for Exploring the Ship and Excursions

During the day, you’ll likely be busy exploring the various amenities of the ship and participating in exciting excursions at port destinations. Comfortable and casual clothing is essential for these activities. Here are some must-have items:

  • T-shirts and Tank Tops:  Pack a variety of lightweight and breathable tops that you can mix and match throughout the trip.
  • Shorts and Skirts:  Opt for comfortable shorts or skirts for warm-weather destinations. For cooler climates, consider packing a pair of lightweight pants.
  • Cover-Ups and Sarongs:  These are useful for heading to the pool or beach and can double as a quick cover-up over swimwear.
  • Sun Hat and Sunglasses:  Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Light Jacket or Sweater:  Even in warm regions, evenings at sea can get breezy, so a light jacket or sweater is handy.
  • Rain Gear:  If your cruise takes you to a region with unpredictable weather, consider packing a compact rain jacket or poncho.

  Swimwear and Beachwear Essentials

For fun-filled days by the pool or at tropical beaches, make sure to pack the following swimwear and beach essentials:

  • Swimsuits:  Pack a couple of swimsuits so you have a dry one to wear while the other is drying.
  • Flip-Flops or Sandals:  Easy-to-wear footwear for poolside lounging and beach outings.
  • Beach Bag:  Carry a spacious, waterproof beach bag to hold your towels, sunscreen, and other necessities.
  • Beach Towels:  While Disney Cruise Line provides towels for onboard use, you’ll need to bring your own for excursions.

Semi-Formal and Formal Attire for Themed Nights and Fine Dining

Disney Cruises offer themed nights and elegant dining experiences, allowing you to dress up and create magical memories. Some cruises no longer host a formal night and have eliminated the dress code at most restaurants, so you may not need formal clothes. It’s best to check with your specific ship to see if they’ll be hosting a formal night. Be sure to pack the following semi-formal and formal attire:

  • Cocktail Dresses and Dress Shirts:  Ladies, bring a stylish cocktail dress or dressy outfit. Gentlemen, pack dress shirts and ties.
  • Semi-Formal Shoes:  Comfortable heels or dress shoes for ladies and dress shoes for gentlemen.
  • Formal Attire:  Consider packing an evening gown or tuxedo for formal nights.

Recommendations for Themed Costume Nights and Character Meet-and-Greets

disney cruise packing rules

Disney Cruises often include themed nights, such as pirate nights or Disney-themed costume parties. Embrace the spirit of these events with the following items:

  • Pirate Night Outfits:  Eye patches, pirate hats, and bandanas for a swashbuckling good time.
  • Disney-Themed Costumes:  Get creative and pack costumes inspired by your favorite Disney characters.
  • Autograph Books and Markers:  Have a designated autograph book ready for character meet-and-greets.

Lightweight and Comfortable Shoes for Various Activities

The proper footwear is essential for exploring the ship, participating in shore excursions, and enjoying various onboard activities. Pack the following types of shoes:

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes:  Sneakers or walking shoes are essential for excursions and exploring ports.
  • Sandals or Flip-Flops:  Lightweight and comfortable footwear for casual days onboard.
  • Dress Shoes:  For formal nights and themed events that require a more polished look.

 Disney-Themed Accessories and Gear

As you set sail on your Disney Cruise, why not add a touch of enchantment and show off your Disney spirit with some magical accessories and gear? Here are some delightful Disney-themed items that will elevate your cruise experience to a whole new level of fun and excitement:

Packing Ears: A Must-Have for Every Disney Enthusiast

disney cruise packing rules

No Disney vacation is complete without a pair of iconic Mickey or Minnie ears! Whether it’s the classic black ears with a red bow or a pair inspired by your favorite Disney character, wearing ears is a tradition that Disney fans of all ages embrace. Not only do they add a touch of whimsy to your outfits, but they also make for fabulous photos with your favorite characters. My favorite ear shop on ETSY is Alli’s Ears ! She makes most of my ears and made me a few pairs of ears just for my Disney Cruise! Use my code MIXINMAGIC15 for 15% off!

Disney-Themed Apparel and Accessories for a Touch of Magic

Pack a selection of Disney-themed clothing and accessories to showcase your love for all things Disney throughout your cruise:

  • Disney T-shirts and Hoodies:  Choose from T-shirts featuring beloved characters, iconic quotes, or Disney Cruise Line logos. Remember a cozy hoodie for more relaxed evenings at sea.
  • Disney Hats and Caps:  Shield yourself from the sun with a Disney baseball cap or a cute Minnie Mouse sun hat.
  • Disney Bags and Backpacks:  Opt for bags adorned with Disney characters or cruise-themed designs to carry your essentials during excursions and activities.
  • Disney Jewelry:  Add a touch of elegance to your cruise outfits with Disney-themed necklaces, bracelets, or earrings.

Autograph Books and Markers for Character Signatures

Meeting Disney characters is a highlight of any Disney Cruise, especially for the little ones (and the young at heart!). Be sure to pack autograph books and markers to collect signatures from your favorite characters. It’s a fantastic keepsake to cherish long after the cruise is over. Some fun options include character-themed autograph books that make the experience even more magical.

Disney Pins and Lanyards for Pin Trading Fun

Pin trading is a beloved tradition among Disney fans, and it’s no different on a Disney Cruise. Bring a selection of Disney pins to trade with crew members and fellow cruisers. It’s a fantastic way to interact with others and expand your pin collection. Don’t forget to display your pins on a lanyard so they’re easily accessible during your cruise.

Sun Protection and Beach Day Must-Haves

As you embark on your Disney Cruise, you’ll likely enjoy sunny days by the pool and beautiful beach excursions. To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time under the sun, it’s crucial to pack the proper sun protection and beach essentials. Here’s what you need to make the most of your beach days and bask in the glorious sunshine:

Sunscreen with High SPF and Broad-Spectrum Coverage

Packing for a Disney Cruise isn’t complete without sunscreen! Sunscreen is your best friend when it comes to protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Choose a high SPF sunscreen (at least SPF 30) that offers broad-spectrum coverage to shield you from UVA and UVB rays. I prefer  mineral-based sunscreen  because it protects my sensitive skin better. Apply sunscreen liberally and frequently, especially after swimming or sweating.

Sunglasses, Hats, and Other Sun Protection Gear

In addition to sunscreen, it’s essential to wear sun protection gear to safeguard your eyes, face, and head from the sun’s rays. Pack the following items:

  • Sunglasses:  Invest in good sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the bright sunlight.
  • Hats and Visors:  Wide-brimmed hats or visors are excellent for shading your face and neck from direct sunlight.
  • Lightweight Cover-Ups:  Long-sleeved cover-ups made from lightweight, breathable fabrics can provide extra protection over your bathing suit when not in the water.

Beach Towels and Portable Chairs for Shore Excursions

Having a comfortable spot to relax is essential for beach days during shore excursions. While Disney Cruise Line provides towels onboard the ship, you’ll need to bring your own for beach excursions. Consider packing lightweight, quick-drying beach towels that won’t take up much space in your bag.

In addition to towels, portable beach chairs or loungers are a fantastic addition to your beach day must-haves. Look for collapsible chairs that are easy to carry and set up at the beach. Having your own chair ensures a comfortable place to relax, especially in popular beach destinations.

Waterproof Phone Pouches or Camera Bags for Beach Activities

Preserving your electronic devices while enjoying beach activities is crucial. Invest in  waterproof phone pouches  or camera bags to protect your smartphone, camera, or other gadgets from sand and water. This way, you can capture stunning beach photos and videos without worry.

Waterproof pouches  also come in handy during water-based excursions, such as snorkeling or water sports, allowing you to keep your phone close by while protecting it from potential splashes or accidental drops.

 Gadgets and Electronics

In the digital age, gadgets, and electronics play a significant role in enhancing our travel experiences. On your Disney Cruise, these technological companions can capture magical moments, keep you connected, and provide entertainment throughout your journey. Make sure these things are included in your Disney Cruise packing list! Here are some essential gadgets and electronics to pack for an even more enchanted cruise:

Camera or Smartphone for Capturing Magical Moments

This probably goes without saying, but you need a camera on your Disney Cruise packing list! Preserving the precious memories of your Disney Cruise is a must, and a camera or smartphone is the perfect tool for the job. Whether you’re capturing character meet-and-greets, onboard entertainment, or breathtaking views at the ports of call, having a camera ensures you’ll have a treasure trove of photos and videos to cherish long after the cruise.

Smartphones with high-quality cameras are incredibly versatile and convenient, making them popular for capturing moments on the go. To maximize your smartphone’s camera capabilities, consider bringing external lenses, a tripod for stable shots, and a selfie stick for group photos.

Power Banks and Portable Charger to Stay Connected Throughout the Cruise

Staying connected during your cruise is essential for various reasons, whether to keep in touch with loved ones, access useful apps, or enjoy your gadgets without worrying about a dying battery. Here’s what to consider:

  • Power Banks :  Invest in a good-quality power bank to recharge your devices while on the go. Opt for one with multiple USB ports and enough capacity to charge your devices several times.
  • Chargers and Cables:  Don’t forget to pack all the necessary chargers and cables for your gadgets, including your phone, camera, tablets, and any other electronics you plan to bring.

  Travel Adapters for International Cruises

Remember to add  travel adapters  to your Disney Cruise packing list for international cruises to ensure your gadgets can be plugged into foreign electrical outlets. Different countries have varying plug shapes and voltages, so having the appropriate travel adapters will keep your devices charged and ready to use no matter where your Disney Cruise takes you.

 Medications and First Aid Supplies

While a Disney Cruise promises a magical and enchanting experience, it’s essential to prioritize your health and well-being throughout the journey. Packing the proper medications and first aid supplies ensures you’re prepared for minor health concerns during the cruise. Here are the essential items to include in your travel medicine kit:

Personal Medications with Proper Labels and Documentation

If you take any prescription medications, ensure you have an adequate supply for the entire duration of your cruise, plus a few extra days in case of unexpected delays. It’s essential to keep these medications in their original containers with clear labels showing your name, the medication name, dosage instructions, and prescribing doctor’s information.

Motion Sickness Remedies for Smoother Sailing

While Disney Cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers to minimize motion, some individuals may still experience seasickness, especially during rough weather or when sailing through open waters. Be prepared with motion sickness remedies to ensure a smoother and more enjoyable voyage:

  • Over-the-Counter Medications:  Consider packing motion sickness medications like Meclizine or Dramamine.
  • Motion Sickness Bands:  Acupressure bands that apply pressure to specific points on your wrists may also help alleviate motion sickness symptoms.
  • Motion Sickness Patches:  Motion Sickness patches are an excellent way for many guests to stave off motion sickness.

Basic First Aid Kit for Minor Injuries and Ailments

A well-stocked first aid kit can come to the rescue for minor injuries and ailments that may occur during your cruise. Here’s what to include:

  • Adhesive Bandages:  Assorted sizes to cover cuts and blisters.
  • Antiseptic Wipes or Solution:  To clean wounds and prevent infection.
  • Pain Relievers:  Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Antihistamines:  For allergic reactions or minor allergic symptoms.
  • Hydrocortisone Cream:  To relieve itching from insect bites or skin irritations.
  • Digital Thermometer:  For monitoring body temperature.
  • Medicated Ointment:  For minor burns or skin irritations.

Disney Cruise Packing List Miscellaneous Essentials

Adding some of these miscellaneous items to your Disney cruise packing list will enhance your comfort, convenience, and overall experience throughout the journey. These essentials are the little things that can make a big difference in ensuring your cruise is nothing short of magical. Let’s explore some must-have miscellaneous items:

 Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is crucial during your cruise, especially when exploring the ship or participating in shore excursions. Bring along reusable water bottles for each member of your travel party. Disney Cruise Line provides complimentary water at various stations onboard, so you can easily refill your bottles throughout the day.

Power Strips  and  Extension Cord

There won’t be nearly enough outlets in your Disney Cruise stateroom. I promise that you will need more than is offered! Bring a power strip and extension cords; you’ll be happy that you did!

Waterproof Bags  or Pouches for Wet Items

Whether heading to the pool, beach or enjoying water-based excursions, having waterproof bags or pouches is essential for keeping your belongings safe and dry. These bags are perfect for storing a wet swimsuit, towels, and water-resistant gadgets like waterproof phone pouches or camera bags.

  Travel-Size Laundry Detergent

Disney Cruise Line offers convenient laundry facilities for guests during the cruise. Pack some travel-size laundry detergent or laundry pods to keep your clothes fresh and clean. This way, you can easily do light laundry throughout the trip and pack fewer clothes, especially on an extended voyage.

Digital Clock(Battery Powered)

You won’t find any clocks inside Disney cruise line ships. I like to bring my own so I can easily keep track of time, especially in the middle of the night!

Shoe Organizer

There’s not a lot of storage space in the bathrooms on a Disney Cruise. Many guests like to bring an over-the-door shoe organizer to hang up in the bathroom to hold their toiletries in an easy-to-access space.

Princess Dress

If your child is visiting the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on your upcoming Disney cruise, consider princess dress from home to your Disney Cruise packing list. They can change into it before there appointment.

Essentials For Your Bag On Embarkation Day

The excitement of embarking on a new journey is palpable, but there’s one minor inconvenience that most travelers face: waiting for their luggage to be delivered to their state rooms. It’s common for checked bags to take some time to reach your room. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable first day of your trip, it’s essential to pack a well-prepared bag with all the necessities you’ll need until your main luggage arrives. Add these things to your Disney cruise packing list:

1. Travel Documents:  First and foremost, ensure you have all your essential travel documents in your bag. These may include your passport, ID, travel itinerary, boarding passes (if you’re on a flight), hotel or cruise confirmation, and any necessary visas or travel permits. Keeping these documents close will help ease any last-minute travel anxieties and make the check-in process a breeze.

2. Change of Clothes:  While waiting for your luggage to arrive, having a change of clothes is a game-changer. Pack a set of comfortable attire suitable for the weather and the activities you plan to undertake on your first day. You might want your swimming suit so you can head right to the pool!

3. Toiletries:  Toiletries are essential to freshen up after a long journey. Include a toothbrush, toothpaste, travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and facial wipes. You’ll feel rejuvenated and ready to explore without relying on what the hotel or cruise ship may provide.

4. Medications and Personal Care:  If you take any prescription medications, pack them in your bag. Also, bring a small first-aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, antacids, and any other personal care items you might need.

5. Electronics and Chargers:  Keep your essential electronics, such as your phone, camera, and any necessary chargers, in your bag. Capturing the first moments of your trip and staying connected is crucial for creating lasting memories and ensuring convenience.

6. Sunscreen and Sun Protection:  Sun protection is a must if you’re heading to a sunny destination. Carry a travel-sized sunscreen with an adequate SPF to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Remember to pack sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the sun’s glare.

 Packing Tips and Organization

Now that we’ve covered everything you should have on your Disney Cruise packing list, let’s talk about a few packing tips. Packing efficiently and staying organized can make a difference during your Disney Cruise. From maximizing suitcase space to quickly locating your belongings, a little planning can lead to a stress-free and enjoyable vacation. Let’s dive into some essential packing tips and organization strategies that will ensure you have everything you need at your fingertips:

Rolling vs. Folding Clothes: Pros and Cons

When it comes to packing clothes, the age-old debate between rolling and folding continues. Both methods have their advantages, so consider these pros and cons to decide what works best for you:

Rolling Clothes:

  • Pros: Rolling clothes can save space and reduce wrinkles. Rolled garments are easy to stack and access in your suitcase, making them convenient for grab-and-go situations.
  • Cons: Bulkier items, like jeans and sweaters, may be more challenging to roll neatly.

Folding Clothes:

  • Pros: Folding clothes may work better for dressier attire and structured fabrics. It keeps clothes neatly stacked and wrinkle-free.
  • Cons: Folding can be more time-consuming, and tightly packed folded clothes might take up more space.

A combination of both techniques can be effective. For example, roll casual items like T-shirts and fold dressier outfits to balance space-saving and wrinkle prevention.

Utilizing Packing Cubes for Better Organization

Packing cubes  are a game-changer for staying organized during your cruise. These lightweight and compact zippered bags come in various sizes and can help you categorize and separate different types of clothing and accessories. Consider using packing cubes for:

  • Separating tops, bottoms, and undergarments.
  • Organizing swimwear, beachwear, and accessories.
  • Keeping kids’ clothes or specific outfits together.

Packing cubes keep your suitcase tidy and make it easier to find specific items without rummaging through everything.

Bonus Tips for a Magical Disney Cruise Experience

disney cruise packing rules

I know this post is about a Disney Cruise packing list, but here are some bonus tips to ensure an unforgettable and magical experience. From planning your activities to embracing the onboard entertainment, these tips will help you make the most of every moment:

Booking Shore Excursions and Activities in Advance

Disney Cruise Line offers a variety of exciting shore excursions and activities at each port of call. Consider booking in advance to secure your spot in popular tours and experiences. Keep an eye on the cruise line’s website or app for the opening of excursion reservations.

Whether exploring ancient ruins, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or enjoying a thrilling zip line adventure, booking in advance ensures you will experience the activities that interest you the most.

Understanding Disney Cruise Line’s Dining Options and Rotational Dining

Disney Cruise Line’s rotational dining is a unique and delightful experience. Throughout your cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to dine at different themed restaurants, and your serving team will rotate with you, providing personalized service each night.

Take the time to familiarize yourself with the dining schedule and menu options. If you have any special dietary requests, inform the cruise line to accommodate your needs.

Participating in Onboard Activities and Entertainment

Your Disney Cruise is not just a means of transportation; it’s a destination in itself. Embrace the onboard activities and entertainment options, from deck parties and live shows to character meet-and-greets and family-friendly games.

Check the daily cruise newsletter, the Personal Navigator, for a schedule of events and activities. Plan your days to include a mix of thrilling experiences and relaxing downtime so that you can make the most of every magical moment onboard.

Taking Advantage of Photo Opportunities with Disney Characters

Meeting beloved Disney characters is a highlight of any Disney Cruise. Take advantage of photo opportunities at various character meet-and-greet locations throughout the ship. Bring your autograph book, camera, or smartphone to capture these magical interactions.

For an extra unique experience, consider attending ticketed character events or character breakfasts to enjoy more one-on-one time with your favorite Disney friends.

Making the Most of Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island Paradise

A Disney Cruise isn’t complete without a visit to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island paradise in the Bahamas. Explore the island’s pristine beaches, embark on exciting water sports, or relax in a hammock with the sound of waves lapping nearby.

Be sure to book the Castaway Cay 5K run in advance if you want active fun on the island. Enjoy the complimentary beach barbecue and explore the family and adult-exclusive areas for a well-rounded experience.

Decorating Your Stateroom Door on a Disney Cruise

One way to make your voyage even more special is by customizing your stateroom door with delightful decorations that showcase your family’s unique style and Disney spirit. In this section, we’ll explore the joys of decorating your stateroom door and share some creative ideas to help you get started. Add door decorations to your Disney Cruise packing list if this interests you.

Why Decorate Your Stateroom Door?

Decorating your stateroom door on a Disney cruise is a time-honored tradition, and it’s easy to see why so many guests participate. Here are some compelling reasons why you should consider adorning your door:

1. Personalization:  Your stateroom door is like a blank canvas that allows you to showcase your family’s personality, interests, and celebration themes. It makes your door stand out in the long hallways and adds a touch of home during your voyage.

2. Festive Spirit:  Disney cruises are all about celebrating and decorating your door, setting the tone for a fun-filled vacation right from the start. The vibrant and creative door decorations create an atmosphere of joy and excitement.

3. Wayfinding:  When you deck out your door with distinctive decorations, it becomes much easier to locate your stateroom, especially in the vast sea of doors along the corridors.

4. Social Interaction:  Your door decorations can be a conversation starter with other guests. You might make new friends or find fellow cruisers with similar tastes or interests.

Tips for Decorating Your Stateroom Door

Now that you’re ready to embark on your door-decorating adventure, here are some practical tips to make your stateroom door truly shine:

1. Magnetic Decorations:  Stateroom doors on Disney cruises are metal, which means you can use magnetic decorations. Stock up on fun and colorful magnets, including Disney characters, cruise-themed designs, and any other appealing personalized items. Magnetic hooks are a great idea!

2. Avoid Damage:  Remember that you should not use adhesives or tape that could damage the door’s surface. Magnetic decorations are the way to go to ensure a damage-free experience.

3. Embrace the Theme:  Get creative and incorporate the Disney theme into your decorations. Whether you’re a fan of Mickey Mouse, princesses, pirates, or Star Wars, there’s a vast array of themed decorations to suit your preferences.

4. DIY Crafts:  Consider making your decorations to add a personal touch. Get the whole family involved in crafting fun and memorable door ornaments that reflect your unique style.

5. Celebrate Special Occasions:  If you’re cruising to celebrate a special event, such as a birthday, anniversary, or engagement, tailor your decorations to match the occasion. Disney offers celebration packages that include door decorations, so be sure to check those out.

6. Respect Others:  Remember to be mindful of your fellow cruisers when decorating your door. Avoid blocking cabin numbers, peepholes, or any important signage on the door. Also, don’t use noisy decorations that could disturb your neighbors.
