Most recently in November of 2022 Drake and 21 Savage came out with a collaborative studio album titled  Her Loss . Update : Drake is continuing to give his fans what they want. The artist announced on Friday (April 28) that he’s adding three more shows in addition to the dozen he had already tacked on to his It’s All a Blur tour earlier in the week due to fan demand. He has now added second shows to Columbus, Ohio (July 2); Austin (Sept. 12); and Charlotte, N.C., (Sept. 23).

Original story below:

How Should Drake Feel About a No. 2 Debut for ‘Search & Rescue’?

The rapper also announced new dates in Columbus, Memphis, Denver, Austin and Charlotte, as well as announcing a new pair of back-to-back shows in his hometown of Toronto to close out the now 54-date tour at Scotiabank Arena on Oct. 5 and 7.

In the meantime, some dates have also shifted around. The New Orleans, Nashville, Houston, Dallas, Miami and Atlanta dates — which were originally slated to take place between June 16 and July 2 will be rescheduled to take place between Sept. 14 and Oct. 2.

Aerosmith announced that they would be postponing their tour on Friday, Sept. 29 with a statement on Instagram , citing frontman Steven Tyler 's recovery from a newly discovered fractured larynx. The news came just two weeks after the  "Dream On" group announced  that the frontman “sustained vocal cord damage” and that they would need to reschedule six of their September concerts.

Aerosmith's current lineup of original members  Brad Whitford ,  Joe Perry , Tom Hamilton and Tyler, as well as new drummer John Douglas, opened up about the singer’s condition in a post dedicated to their fans.

“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought,” the band wrote. “His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers added, “He is receiving the best medical treatment available to ensure his recovery is swift, but given the nature of a fracture, he is being told patience is essential.”

Tyler, 76, also said he was“heartbroken” by the change of plans for the group and their openers, The Black Crowes.

He added, “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world. I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Coachella was the gold standard of music festivals. Has it lost its shine?

I n 2015, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was one of the hottest tickets in town, selling out in record time: 40 minutes. AC/DC brought the house down with an electric set. Madonna planted a kiss on Drake on stage. Kanye West made a surprise appearance during the Weeknd's performance.

Ahead of Coachella’s start on Friday, tickets for the second weekend of the festival are still available (it took a month for the first weekend to sell out), and resale tickets are going for well below face value on StubHub and other secondary resellers in an unprecedented year of sluggish sales — the slowest in a decade.

So what happened?

After the festival expanded from one weekend to two in 2012, it sold out almost every year since then — from that sub-hour whir in 2015 to four-plus hours in 2022 in its post-COVID return. The following year marked the first time in 11 years that the event did not sell out both weekends. At full capacity, the fest drew up to 125,000 concertgoers a day.

Dave Brooks, Billboard's senior director of live music and touring, said the dip in sales and fan interest is “a natural off-cycle” for Coachella.

“I don’t buy that the Coachella brand is permanently diminished at all,” Brooks said. “Obviously this was an off-year, [but] it’s hands-down one of the best experiences out there.”

Still, the Coachella craze from about a decade ago has notably faded. Rising prices, a less buzzy lineup than years past and stiff competition in the live music space are all likely to blame.

Although interest has decreased, Coachella ticket prices have not. Before fees, general admission tickets cost $499 to $549 and VIP tickets are going for $1,069 to $1,269.

With lodging, transportation, parking and food expenses each racking up hundreds of dollars, some might think the cost isn't quite worth the experience.

But after a year when fans shelled out “insane amounts of money” for Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s concerts, Stig Edgren, a live event producer and lecturer in music industry at UCLA, said the lineup is more likely to blame for this year’s slump.

The internet was divided after Goldenvoice, the festival’s founder and producer, announced the performers in January. Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat are headlining with special guest No Doubt, and Edgren said the demand for these artists “just isn't there this year.”

Goldenvoice didn't respond to The Times' requests for comment.

Del Rey and Doja Cat both wrapped up tours at the end of 2023 and Tyler, the Creator performed at his Camp Flog Gnaw Festival in November, so fans may have recently seen the headliners at their respective shows and festival appearances.

This year’s artists also don’t have the same rabid fan bases as previous headliners, like last year’s international stars Bad Bunny and Blackpink, and Brooks said the lineup lacks the “commercially successful music stories” that past years have boasted.

Other notable headliners include Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Frank Ocean. The latter caused a stir last year with his divisive performance and subsequent cancellation of his Weekend 2 set, which outraged festival-goers and possibly deterred future attendance.

There are also tough competitors in the festival space with flashier lineups than Coachella. Stagecoach , the popular country music festival, will take over the same Indio polo grounds starting April 26 with headliners Miranda Lambert, Morgan Wallen and Eric Church. The Lovers & Friends festival will hit Las Vegas a week later, boasting a lengthy list of headliners, including Usher, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and the Backstreet Boys.

That same weekend is packed with festivals across the country. Headliners Post Malone, Stevie Nicks and Noah Kahan will lead the Lovin’ Life Music Fest in Charlotte, N.C. Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters will take the stage at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta. Sting, Incubus and My Morning Jacket will perform closer to home in Redondo Beach at the BeachLife Festival . The Rolling Stones, Chris Stapleton, Hozier, Queen Latifah and more will close out the second weekend of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival .

The saturation in the concert and festival market that came with the spike in live performances after the pandemic may also be causing fan fatigue that could be hurting Coachella’s sales.

Bill Werde, the director of Syracuse University's music business program and author of the industry newsletter “ Full Rate No Cap ,” said the pandemic affected the promotion of festivals and concerts and fans' purchasing habits. As the availability of Coachella tickets ahead of its opening weekend shows, fewer people are buying tickets well in advance of events, Werde said.

“People want to look at something like this and want to pronounce the death of Coachella and it's just too soon,” Werde said. “This is one of the strangest times we’ve ever experienced in live music in the history of the business, which is to say, specifically, this rebound from a period of not having shows for a couple of years. Finding out what the new normal looks like is going to take a couple more years.”

Werde said the lack of early commitment from ticket buyers coupled with the increased cost of putting on a show creates a "dicey environment for festivals." Other major fests across the country, namely Jay-Z's Made in America Festival , have been canceled this year.

Another factor for those hesitant to take the plunge could be the allure of the "Couchella" experience. Thanks to Goldenvoice's partnership with YouTube, fans can livestream performances from up to six stages from the comfort of their homes. Beyoncé's 105-minute set attracted a record 458,000 simultaneous global viewers on YouTube in 2018. The festival's opening weekend amassed 41 million unique viewers.

"When you're standing at the back of 50,000 people, it's like, ‘Well, shoot, I can get a better seat at home and then I can do Uber Eats and have seven margaritas and this will be great,” said Tommy Dietrick, founder of the Desert Stars Festival in Joshua Tree.

The target audience for Coachella, the die-hard music fans who once duked it out for tickets, may have also changed their concert-going preferences.

“The consumer may be growing up a bit and may not want to be standing in a mud pit or in the hot sun,” Edgren said. “When you go to Coachella, you're basically standing up the whole time and it's an ordeal.”

Dietrick, who also produces music at Joshua Tree Recording Studio, noted that Coachella attendees now get an experience that is removed from the "community element that music is actually really all about.”

“They've squeezed too hard on the class people that were going there to escape and have fun,” he said.

Coachella also seems to attract a different kind of music fan today than it did at its inception and in its early years, when it boasted legendary headliners like Paul McCartney, Prince, Nine Inch Nails and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. With fewer rock bands and more brand partnerships, the festival has been criticized for becoming a "plaything for influencers," as Werde put it.

Beyond the changes to Coachella's audience, the music and entertainment industries are also experiencing shifts in terms of what it takes to become famous and build a following. Werde said the music world is facing "enormous fragmentation" because of the volume of musicians creating and sharing their work online. He called this new phase "the age of a thousand niches" and noted that fans' following of celebrities is getting wider, not deeper.

“These are real changes that are happening in the star system, and festivals are dependent on the star system. Festivals create this experience around all these stars and if those stars get smaller, those festivals get smaller. If those stars get fewer, those festivals are going to struggle.”

In its 23rd year, Coachella seems to be reaching a stabilizing point where it is no longer the hottest ticket of the year but is still attracting a wide audience.

"The form of struggle that Coachella is having is probably a form of struggle that a lot of people would kill to have," Werde said.

Like fellow long-running music festival Lollapalooza in Chicago, Edgren said Coachella has “settled” into a new phase and will likely continue to experience ebbs and flows with its sales in coming years.

“There's no way any event or festival like that can sustain that kind of success forever. There's just no way,” Edgren said. “There has to be dips, some years are slightly better than others. They're not the new kid on the block anymore.”

A message for Drake: Don’t respond to Kendrick!

OPINION: Here are seven reasons why Drake shouldn't respond to Kendrick Lamar's takedown on "Like That."

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own.   Read more  opinions  on theGrio.

This is a message for Drake and Drake only. If you are not Drake, please do not read any further. Thank you for respecting Drake’s privacy.

Aubrey, bro, are you OK? Or should I say, are you OK, fam? I’m sure you and your therapist have had a lot to talk about over the past two weeks. I have no doubt that “Like That” brought up a lot of emotions and had you in your feelings. That’s OK, you’re in your feelings all the time. But this time it’s not about some girl who’s breaking your heart, it’s about all of hip-hop waiting for you to respond to the absolute tongue-lashing Kendrick gave you on “Like That.” (That was really brutal. It was like a total beatdown of the sort we haven’t seen since Mike Tyson was in his prime. You must have been so embarrassed, fam. But I digress.) Many people have told you that you absolutely must respond, but there are many reasons why you shouldn’t. I made a list.

1.  Kendrick is a far better rapper than you. That sentence is a vast understatement. K-Dot is a Pulitzer-winning genius, and you’re more like the hip-hop equivalent of McDonald’s. No shade. You just cannot win this battle . I mean “Like That” had double and triple entendres and complex rhyme schemes. Your recent music, by comparison, has been mid . You (and your ghosts) can’t compete with Kung Fu Kenny, fam. It’s like he has a supercomputer and you have a calculator. Why battle someone who’s way better than you?

2. If you ignore my advice and you do respond, you know he’ll fire back. And he won’t do it right away; he’s not that type. He could wait three months. He could wait 30 months. Either way, you’ll have to wait and worry and look over your shoulder all the time wondering, is he going to drop a response today? Any time you’re at a strip club or at a steakhouse or whatever, you’ll be thinking in the back of your mind, maybe Kendrick will come back at me today. Who needs the sword of Kendrick hanging over their head while they’re trying to get their freak on? (I made a play on the sword of Damocles, but I changed it to Kendrick. Clever, right?)

Why is it so hard to say sorry as an adult? A discussion

Panama Jackson

3. You have a really nice life right now. You have mansions, you have a plane and you have Raptors tickets that no one wants. Why do something to jeopardize all that, Drake? You lost to Pusha T (badly I might add), and yet, it didn’t impact anything but how many losses can you sustain without it eventually impacting you? What if Kendrick says some crazy things that make fans rethink how they see you and this gilded life starts to disappear? Do you want to engage in something that could lead you to, one day, flying commercial?

4. We both know that there are a lot of embarrassing things Kendrick could say about you, Drake. There’s a lot of messiness in your life . You know what I’m talking about. Do you really want any of that out in public?

5. The flip side of that is what are you going to say about him? There ain’t much dirt out there about him, and he already told us a lot of it on his own records. So there’s no personal angle you can use. Also, you can’t diss his catalog. Cole tried that and failed. And his music is way better so how are you criticizing his music? So there’s no musical angle for you to take. You can say I’m richer than you, and I have more hits than you but that’s not going to win a battle. Maybe you could make a whole song around Kendrick being short. You could loop up Randy Newman’s “Short People” and rhyme about his height. Maybe call it “Short King.” That’s a terrible idea, but I’m just spit-balling here. Maybe you could rhyme about how you’re light-skinned and he’s not. That’s also a terrible idea. I’m struggling to see anything you could say that would hurt him.

6. Sometimes in life when we have conflicts, we have to take a step back and say, am I the one who’s in the wrong here? Right now, there’s a lot of people mad at you . You’ve got Kendrick, Metro Boomin, Future, Travis Scott, Rick Ross, Megan Thee Stallion and more. (You should talk about this with your therapist for sure, fam). Maybe, instead of making a diss record, you should look inward and contemplate why half of the industry is mad at you. Maybe it’s time to reflect on what Drake is doing to others.

7. It’s important to remember that K-Dot is hood. You are not. I’m not saying he’s going to shoot you; I’m saying this: Generally, hood dudes are tougher than us non-hood dudes. If I were you, I wouldn’t want beef with a hood dude at all. I’d rather you battle Talib Kweli or De La Soul or Questlove. Maybe you could make a surprise diss song about one of them and divert everyone’s attention like a cartoon world switcheroo. Maybe people will just forget about “Like That.” I doubt it because “Like That” is everywhere — people love that song.

Look, I know I have nothing but terrible ideas, but that’s because you’re in a bad situation where the options are bad and worse. Maybe you should’ve been a little more thoughtful when y’all were making “First Person Shooter.” Just sayin’, fam.

Kendrick Lamar

“South Park” co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are teaming with Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free on a new live-action comedy that will hit theaters just in time for our nation’s birthday.

From the stage, Paramount CEO Brian Robbins said: “This script is one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read and it’s certain to create some fireworks.” Get the pun?

The live-action comedy was written by Vernon Chatman. The studio didn’t share any details about what the film is about beyond the involvement of its top-shelf talent.

Lamar and PGLang partner Free will produce the project alongside Stone and Parker. The duo launched their company in 2020. Lamar has created such chart-topping hits as “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “Poetic Justice” and “The Blacker the Berry.” He also curated the soundtrack album for “Black Panther.”

In addition to the long-running “South Park” television show, Stone and Parker also created 1999’s feature “South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut” and the 2004 feature-length film “Team America: World Police.” They also worked with Robert Lopez to create the nine-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Book of Mormon.”

NFL executives, scouts rank draft’s top QBs: ‘He scares the hell out of me’

“ The Beast, ” Dane Brugler’s expansive guide to the NFL Draft , is here.

One general manager’s text summarized his annoyance about pre-draft “noise.”

“Everything now is speculation,” he responded amid a series of exchanges. “The draft is the IPO, and the stock price of the pick will fluctuate with each practice, game and season. Time always tells the tale.”

Assessments from outside evaluators and information shared by reporters following the college football season shape the initial draft narratives. Anyone can watch game tapes. However, interviews with players or individuals who help teams fill in bios and backstories are one crucial piece of the prospect puzzle that is inaccessible to the public.

“I judged on film alone,” one former head coach said upon sharing his QB thoughts. “Not knowing the kid makes this tougher.”

As narrative shifts occur, online debates often become inflamed. Talking heads and opinionated fans become swayed or more entrenched. One example is the banter about Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s apparent rise from a mid-to-late first-round pick to joining the top-five conversation with LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.

Led by general manager Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn, the Washington Commanders have remained mum about their plans for the second overall pick. That makes life tricky for the mock draft community, national news breakers, sanity-seeking reporters and, more importantly, teams picking after Washington. The QB-needy New England Patriots have the third selection.

“I don’t think anyone in here really knows exactly what Washington is going to do,” Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said at last month’s league meetings .

NFL coaches, execs split on which QBs Commanders, Patriots should take at Nos. 2 and 3

Seventeen sources shared their takes on the top passing prospects in this year’s draft. This combined ranking used a 5-3-2-1 scoring system, with first-place votes in parentheses. Our group:

  • Two active general managers
  • Three personnel executives
  • Three scouts
  • One assistant/QBs coach
  • Three former general managers
  • One ex-head coach
  • Four former players-turned-analysts, including two ex-quarterbacks

Other sources discussed the prospects but declined a rank order. The first-round answer key will be revealed when the draft commences April 25. The conjecture over which teams fared best will have only just begun.

1. Caleb Williams , USC — 78 points (14 first-place votes)

Outside of Williams going the John Elway or Eli Manning route, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner is headed to Chicago as the No. 1 selection. No wonder all draft speculation starts with the Commanders at No. 2.

Trait comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes were sprinkled throughout discussions, though sources shied away from tagging Williams as the next Mahomes. Several sources mentioned Williams’ high floor as the highlight rather than the potential upside. Three panelists preferred Daniels, with one — fearing possible disruption from Williams’ famously involved camp — slotting the USC quarterback third. Otherwise, the panel has high hopes for one of the best QB prospects in years.

Scout 1: I understand the leadership concerns, but Williams has the most talent. He’s easily No. 1.

Former NFL QB and current NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms: (Williams) can throw every ball in the book. … He’s the best scrambler in the draft and the best off-platform. He’s got the best feel in the pocket. And then when there is nothing there, there is nobody better.

NFL mock draft: Vikings trade up, leading to QB-heavy top-4 selections

2. Jayden Daniels , LSU — 50 (3)

Only Williams and Daniels, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, received first-place votes. Daniels’ experience (53 starts with Arizona State and LSU), development as a passer (40 touchdown passes in 2023, nine fewer than his previous four seasons combined) and dual-threat playmaking (1,134 rushing yards last season) had several sources speaking in glowing terms.

His thin frame — 6-foot-4, 210 pounds — and penchant for playing in traffic led to wicked collisions and long-term frets with panelists. However, his improvement and apparent fit with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s up-tempo offense have made him a mock draft staple at No. 2. Washington will host Daniels for a visit starting Monday, a league source told The Athletic .

% of 3rd down pass attempts that resulted in a 1st down in 2023: 48.21 – Jayden Daniels 48.10 – J.J. McCarthy 43.82 – Bo Nix 42.31 – Caleb Williams 39.29 – Drake Maye 37.93 – Michael Penix pic.twitter.com/P867fU48dH — Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) February 5, 2024

Assistant coach: Daniels is so good. … He is so much better than Maye and McCarthy. It’s not even close. Daniels can play NFL football right now.

Scout 2: Jayden probably made more progress than any quarterback coming out in the last five or six years. He can anticipate, make all the throws and is an explosive athlete. (As a scrambler), he’s not Lamar Jackson or Michael Vick. His ability to process (pre-snap) has improved as a passer, which is hard to do in one year. We know he started working with (virtual reality) this season . Got those VR reps, and that’s when he took off.

Scout 1: High upside but has a ton of room (to grow). It will take a couple of years, and the offense has to be tailored (to him). It’s going to be some wow but some ugly (plays). A lot like Justin Fields .

Former head coach: Jayden is QB2. He can start immediately, but he better learn to protect himself or he’ll be in the cold tub often.

Personnel executive 1: He could end up being the best one. Good athlete and arm talent. I think he sees it and can process. Big drop-off after him and Williams.

3. Drake Maye , North Carolina — 24

If these six passers were ranked on the level of polarization, Maye would be the runaway leader. Following the 2022 season, some circles saw him as Williams’ rival for QB1 draft status due to his prototype 6-foot-4, 223-pound size, deep passing strength, mobility and competitiveness. As a first-time starter, Maye was named ACC Player of the Year.

Following several offseason personnel changes at UNC, including losing offensive coordinator Phil Longo to Wisconsin, Maye’s performance and passing statistics dipped in 2023, especially against higher-end foes. The variance among these sources on Maye ranges from QB2 (Scout 1: “I think he will be the best of the group”) to being outside the top four. The highlight reels are strong , but so is the discussion of regression in decision-making, footwork and fundamentals amid a choppy final college season.

“I know a lot of people look at the ceiling, but you’ve also got to see how low the floor is,” Mayo said last month. “A guy like Drake Maye has a lot of room to grow. He’s a young guy. He hasn’t played football nearly as much (26 starts) as these other guys.”

The panel cited Maye as the quarterback in most need of a redshirt NFL season. That’s logical for a player who turns 22 in August. However, the assessment also shows a lack of clarity about the future.

Drake Maye on 4th down. pic.twitter.com/LqEzLwSfNO — Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) November 12, 2023

Current GM: People are going to pick Maye apart. If he ends up being the best of the group, it won’t shock me. He is made of the right stuff.

Simms: If you watch 20 throws, you’ll see good throws. Then … the ball is all over the place. The decision-making can be all over the place, and the pocket presence is all over the place, let alone some mechanical flaws in how he throws the football. It (was) confirmed to me in his pro day, (which) was underwhelming. … He’s got all the size. He’s pretty athletic when he runs. I always hear (Maye is) like Justin Herbert coming out or Josh Allen , and my brain wants to explode.

Scout 1: Maye reminds me a lot of Herbert.

Assistant coach: Maye is Herbert light. Take everything Herbert does and make it less. They’ll be compared (because of the prototype size), but there’s no comparison. I like Maye, but when I see the amount of work it will take to have him reach his potential, we’ll be fired first.

Personnel executive 1: He scares the hell out of me. Longer thrower with a big arm but not quick release. Nothing feels like it happens in rhythm, and accuracy is average. Needs a year on the bench.

Former GM: He has accuracy you can’t teach and is only scratching the surface with his upside while he physically matures. Wait for years two and three. If he progresses, he can end up like Troy Aikman.

Commanders could have a Drake Maye-Jayden Daniels decision to make at No. 2

4. J.J. McCarthy , Michigan — 23

Let’s start with the elephant in the room.

“I think the J.J. hype is real,” texted another personnel executive, who has McCarthy over Maye in his top four. “He’s extremely talented.”

Two sources ranked McCarthy QB2, and multiple panelists prefer his play-time processing and intangibles over other quarterbacks in this class. McCarthy’s sharp pro day has garnered praise beyond former Michigan coach and new Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh .

#Michigan QB JJ McCarthy was my QB3 entering the season and he has absolutely lived up to that so far. Eager to see him vs. Penn St and Ohio St defenses in a few weeks. 56.0% of his pass attempts in 2023 have resulted in a 1st down or TD, which ranks No. 1 in the FBS. pic.twitter.com/0MYlCU9RH5 — Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) October 23, 2023

Some panelists pushed back on the top-five potential based on limited usage at times despite effectively quarterbacking the Wolverines to a national championship and a 27-1 record over the past two seasons.

“I need to watch McCarthy more,” said one GM, who grades McCarthy outside of Round 1, “but I never saw (the positives) we’re hearing about him now. J.J. never had to carry Michigan and was driving a damn Cadillac.”

McCarthy executes plays on time in structure, is willing to take shots over the middle and has needed athleticism. One source compared him to San Francisco 49ers starter Brock Purdy , whose traits meshed perfectly in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

Assistant coach: (McCarthy’s) technique is jacked up, but when we met him (this draft cycle), he knew he had to work on layering the ball. Maye is more of a sandlot passer. J.J. is probably better at working from the pocket in the long term. I’d probably take him (third).

Scout 1: I don’t love (McCarthy). He’s a winner and has all the intangibles, but I wouldn’t say I like his arm and think the athlete is a little overrated. He reminds me of Daniel Jones .

Scout 2: These top four quarterbacks are all better than Zach Wilson (2021 No. 2 pick) and Trey Lance (2021 No. 3 pick) coming out. Daniels, Maye and McCarthy could go in any order, depending on your preferred flavor.

go-deeper

Commanders mock draft 2.0: The QB debate continues, 2 trades help fill roster holes

5. Michael Penix Jr. , Washington — 8

It’s unlikely Penix will be picked in the top 10 and perhaps not in the first round — only five of the panelists placed the Heisman runner-up in their top four. Some were freaked out by his injury history before the past two seasons. However, some evaluators swoon over Penix’s pocket presence and arm talent enough that they see a player worthy of going in the 11 to 13 range.

Assistant coach: Penix is better now than Maye and McCarthy for NFL football. He can read (defenses), throw accurately, is quick and has a strong enough arm. He’s more of a sure thing to play in the NFL, but I’m not sure where he goes from here because he doesn’t have the same upside.

Scout 2: I think (Bo) Nix is much better than Penix. Penix is serviceable and a different player when he’s playing on schedule. But he’s not a good foot athlete, and I worry about him when he gets traffic in his face.

Michael Penix has been inconsistent this season when moved from his spot. But that wasn't the case last night. Great win by DT Byron Murphy to create the pressure (has to finish there), but even better job by Penix for the quick evade and dart to Odunze. pic.twitter.com/udXdxamwK8 — Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) January 2, 2024

6. Bo Nix , Oregon — 3

Teams choosing in the teens or between 25-35 might step up for Nix or Penix rather than wait another year to start their quarterback clock. They are ready-set-go bona fide: Both are five-year starters who will be 24 before Week 1.

Nix is one of the better scramblers in this group, and the Auburn transfer set the FBS record for single-season completion percentage (77.45) in 2023. Those not seeing first-round talent mention Nix can lose touch with his fundamentals and play too loose.

Former GM: Daniels and Nix will be the best pros early.

Personnel executive 2: Nix is just good enough at everything. I don’t wanna knock him for hitting open wide receivers on easy throws. I walked away wanting more from his tape.
