VIP Private Rome Driving Tour Description
Your 3-hour private driving tour includes:
Door-to-door transport in an air-conditioned luxury vehicle (from central Rome accommodation)
Your own personal English-speaking tour guide
Stops at the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Aventine Hill, and more
Visit some of Rome’s best hidden gems
Flexible tour that can be tailored to you
Up to 7 people per vehicle (multiple vehicles available)
Because some sites on this small group tour are religious, knees and shoulders must be covered for both men and women. We know that Rome is hot in summer, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders only when necessary.
Rome Hotel Pick-Up
Don’t worry about figuring out transportation, your private driver will pick you up and drop you off at your accommodation in the center of Rome. If your accommodation is located outside the center of the city, another meeting point in the center will be organized for your convenience. After you book, we'll reach out to you and organize the specifics, but feel free to contact us first. Not sure where whether your hotel in Rome is central? Contact our Travel Experts by email or online chat to be sure.
Highlights of the Historic Center
One of the early stops on your private city tour is a true hidden gem of Rome. The Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva is built on the site of a temple built by Pompey the Great around 50 B.C., and stands as Rome's only Gothic church, bursting with fantastic Italian art.
Your driver will park as near as possible while your private guide leads you on a short walking tour of the historic city center, where many of Rome's most famous sites are clustered close together.
Rome’s Architectural Marvel: The Pantheon
The best-preserved building from ancient Rome, the Pantheon and was completed in 125 A.D. during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. In particular, its dome reveals the genius of the architects who lived and worked so long ago. A rare opportunity to step back in time 2,000 years, seeing the Pantheon is not to be overlooked on a trip to Rome.
Piazza Navona and Authentic Roman Gelato
One of the main squares in Rome, Piazza Navona is a delightful hub of food, culture and charming architecture. One of the first things you’ll notice when entering this piazza is the Egyptian Obelisk, towering over the surrounding buildings of the open square. You'll also visit the beautiful Fountain of Four Rivers in the center of the piazza, known for its intricate sculptures. Your expert guide will delve into the story behind the Stadium of Domitian, the ancient arena that lies beneath today’s piazza.
Near to Piazza Navona is one of our favorite gelato shops in Rome. Many gelaterias use artificial flavors, but this one is as authentic as they come! Cool down and enjoy gelato the Roman way on as you stroll around this beautiful part of Rome.
Gelato is optional and not included in the price of the tour, so bring a little cash with you if you'd like to try one.
See More of Rome by Car
To make sure you see as much of Rome as possible in a few hours, you'll hop back into your private vehicle. For the next portion of your tour of Rome, You'll drive by Piazza Venezia and the ruins of Largo Argentina. It’s here that Emperor Julius Caesar met his end, and a trio of ancient temples protrudes from the grass. Fun fact: this is also where the largest colony of stray cats live. It’s said that the cats play host for ancient Roman spirits. Plus, pass through the Greek Ghetto on the way to the Aventine Hill.
Aventine Hill - The Best Views of Rome
After departing from the city center, you'll drive up Aventine Hill to witness one of the most scenic views of all of Rome. From the top, you'll be able to look over large parts of the city, and you'll have the chance to take photos at some of the hill's most beloved spots: the Rose Garden, Orange Garden, and Rome’s Aventine keyhole.
The southernmost of Rome’s seven hills, the Aventine Hill is home to the the oldest Roman Basilica in Rome, the Basilica of Santa Sabina. Your private guide will make sure you see all the best spots on the hill while explaining the history of this famous site.
Walk Up Capitoline Hill
On the way to Capitoline Hill, get a glimpse of Circus Maximus from the car. Then, follow your guide to Capitoline Hill by foot. If you’re looking for that postcard view looking down into ancient Rome - this is it. At the best view point on the hill, admire the Roman Forum from an amazing vantage point. Then, head back down the hill to visit the Trevi Fountain.
As you continue your exploration of the center of Rome, you'll stop off at the beautiful Trevi Fountain. This 18th-century treasure is the most famous fountain in Rome, and possibly the world. Depicting the Greek god Oceanus, the fountain portrays the changing tides of the ocean. If you toss a coin into the fountain over your left shoulder with your right hand, it's believed that you'll be certain to return to the Eternal City. Your guide will explain the construction and restoration of this Roman icon and allow you to toss your own coin into the fountain.
Rome’s Iconic Spanish Steps
Located in the middle of Rome’s high-end shopping scene, the 18th-century Spanish Steps lead to the Trinità dei Monti church. At the base of the steps, you’ll find another one of Rome’s beautiful fountains, Fontana della Barcaccia, or “Fountain of the Longboat." If you're ambitious enough to climb the Spanish Steps later in your trip, you’ll find the Borghese Gardens, a beautiful park with stunning panoramic views of the city.
Once you've seen the best of Rome by car and on foot, your driver will be ready to take you back to your accommodation. If you'd rather stay out to explore more of the city by yourself, then no problem! We can even arrange transport to the airport or elsewhere in Rome, so just get in touch with our team for any special arrangements.

Best Rome Tour and Guide Ever
Dimitri was the best (and tallest) tour guide ever. His range of knowledge of history, art, and modern culture brought a learning experience like none other. We really appreciated his insights combined with a pleasant, down to earth style and a pleasing sense of humor. The tour was conducted with a comfortable, air conditioned van, and a safe, courteous driver. We would do this all over again in our next visit to Rome. Can we give him six stars somehow?!?
Mateo provided a fabulous tour!
Mateo provided a fabulous tour of Rome. His knowledge of the history was amazing and he shared so many interesting stories. He was very accommodating with our group. The private tour was the perfect way to see so many of the sites. It was very hot on the day we visited so the van saved us! We saw so many sites that we would have missed or not had time to view if we had tried to manage this on our own! Would highly recommend the tour and request Mateo! You won’t be sorry!
Private Rome, City Drive with Paline
She was a very personable and informative guide. We really appreciated all her knowledge and love for the city. We definitely give her high markings for the work she does! Excellent

What you’ll See Along the Way
Located just steps away from the Pantheon, the Basilica of Saint Mary Above Minerva was named fittingly, as it was built directly above the ruins of a temple dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis, who took the name Minerva in Greco-Roman mythology. The medieval church took on some Baroque and Renaissance style adjustments over the centuries, including some brilliant artistic embellishments. Francesco Lippi frescoed the ceiling in the 15th century while Michelangelo contributed his marble sculpture of “Christ Carrying the Cross” in 1521. Bernini also made his mark here when he erected his “Pulcino della Minerva”, a sturdy elephant sculpture with an obelisk on top, in front of the church in 1667.
The Pantheon is undoubtedly one of Rome’s most magnificent destinations, boasting both unique architecture and rich history. During our morning tours we will step inside to admire the oculus (the open hole in the center of the dome ceiling), the slanted marble floors, and the tomb of the famous Renaissance artist Raphael Sanzio. For evening hours, the Pantheon doors will be closed – but there is much to admire from the outside as well. The Pantheon we see today was built under the command of Emperor Hadrian in 126 AD, and its dome remains to be the largest unsupported dome in the world. The temple-style portico is made up of massive monolithic columns that were imported all the way from Egypt. Needless to say, the surrounding Piazza della Rotonda is a perfectly picturesque place to pause and ponder the 2,000-year-old structure and the advanced abilities of the Ancient Romans.
Since 1869 Campo dei Fiori has served as an important market square, bustling and brimming with marketeers, fruit vendors, and flower sellers every day, with the exception of Sundays. In the evenings it takes on an equally lively ambiance with tourists, locals, and international students mingling together amongst the surrounding bars and restaurants. While for many years the piazza remained empty, as it’s name “field of flowers” suggests, in the mid 15th century its development began. The area was paved and Palazzo Orsini was erected to look over it. It soon became an important commercial area where entrepreneurs and artisans could make and sell their products. From fresh produce to pretty flowers, liqueurs to baked goods, the Campo di Fiori market has what you need!
The popularity of this magnificent piazza grew exponentially in modern times when it was featured in Dan Brown’s thriller novel Angels & Demons in 2000 and later appeared in the popular film adaption in 2008. Nevertheless, this stunning square has a much wider significance. In fact, it is built directly above the 1st century Stadium of Domitian, of which ruins remain below, proving that Piazza Navona was a popular destination even in Ancient Roman times. Today visitors find an elegant cobblestone plaza centered on three beautiful fountains, the largest and most central one being Bernini’s “Fountain of Four Rivers”, nestled perfectly in front of the 17th century baroque church of Sant’ Agnese in Agone.
Tourists travel from every corner of the world to visit Rome – to explore its incomparable collections of art, to admire its impeccable architecture, and to delve into its incredibly rich history. But, let’s not forget, no one plans a visit to Rome without a plan to try some truly authentic Italian gelato! While the Eternal City will undoubtedly bombard you with ice cream shops on every street corner, we want to be sure that you try the real thing. Italians take pride in making their gelato from scratch using fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients with no unnecessary additives. We look forward to offering you a truly tasty gelato experience – on us!
In Ancient times this area was heavily occupied by Greek merchant settlers, hence it’s name. Here we will find the oldest surviving marble building of Rome: the Temple of Hercules, which dates back to the 2nd century BC. Its Greek “monopteros” design includes a round temple encircled by columns, 19 of which remain of the original 20. Neighboring the temple is the 8th century Basilica of Santa Maria Cosmedin, which boasts the tallest medieval belfry in Rome but is certainly better known for its feature in the 1953 romantic comedy “Roman Holiday”. This is, indeed, the home of the ancient “Mouth of Truth” sculpture. Legends suggest that if a person swears falsely while their hand is inside the mouth, the mouth will close and sever the hand.
As if the smell of an orange garden weren’t blissful enough, this one comes with a spectacular view, too! Since Aventine Hill is not very central, many tourists unfortunately miss out on its treats and treasures. What’s even better is that you won’t have to climb to get to the top! The lush orange garden offers a fantastic backdrop as you take in one of the most breathtaking views of the city. Get your cameras ready or simply kick your feet up as you gaze over the treetops at St Peter’s dome glistening in the distance.
Take a look at one of Rome’s lesser known – but absolutely brilliant - secret treasures: The Knights of Malta keyhole on Aventine Hill. While unsuspecting tourists pass by without a clue, we’ll guide you directly to the most unique and unusual view of Rome. Located on the door of an unmarked building is the keyhole, but it’s not just any keyhole. When you look through it you will find rows of trees forming a perfect frame to St Peter’s Basilica in the distance. It is a truly spectacular thing to see, as photos simply do not do it justice.
Nestled in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills lay the remains of the largest stadium of Ancient Rome: the Circus Maximus. At a length of 621 meters and width of 118m, this massive venue once hosted up to 150,000 spectators at a time (as opposed to only 50,000 at the Colosseum) for spectacular games, chariot races, and even gladiator battles. Circus Maximus, which dates back to the 6th century BC, is now a public park and is occasionally used as a concert venue for large events such as the Rome concert of Live 8 in 2005 and The Rolling Stones in 2014.
Michelangelo’s 16th century Piazza del Campidoglio sits atop Capitoline Hill at Rome’s very center. The piazza features a grand sculpture of Marcus Aurelius on horseback, which is bordered by Medieval and Renaissance palaces that now house the Capitoline Museum and the modern Mayor’s office. Discover the symbolism behind Michelangelo’s design and why he chose to block the view of the Roman Forum and open the hilltop plaza towards The Vatican and get your cameras ready to capture the extraordinary views of the city below.
Though Nicola Salvi’s Trevi Fountain has been loved and adored since its completion in 1762, fashion house Fendi funded a $2.4 million restoration project in 2015 – which means that the fountain is currently the cleanest it has been in many years! The travertine spectacle, which rests at the end of the ancient Aqua Virgo Aqueduct, has been featured in films throughout the decades, from 1953’s “Roman Holiday” to “The Lizzie McGuire Movie” in 2003. Visitors come from every corner of the world to admire its beauty and capture postcard perfect photographs.
In 1725 the Spanish Steps were opened, connecting the Piazza of Trinità dei Monti, with its towering church, to the lower lying Piazza di Spagna. The 135 steps were built in order to create a link between the Bourbon Spanish Embassy and the Bourbon Kings of France. The plan indeed worked out, making the Spanish Steps a perfect area for the mingling of people of different cultures. Some famous frequenters of the area include many English Romantic poets and writers, like John Keats and Lord Byron. Now, the Steps remain to be a place for resting and socializing, by day and night, where visitors can admire the windows of high-end fashion shops and even Bernini’s “Fountain of the Ugly Boat”.
Hit Rome’s highlights with your very own guide from the comfort of a private car
As Rome is a city built on seven hills, it’s no small obstacle to cover its ground on foot. Throw cobblestone streets and an endless amount of small confusing streets into the mix and it becomes clear that navigating this metropolis would be significantly more enjoyable with someone else leading the way. That’s where we come in! Avoid wasted time, achy feet, and a public-transport-induced headache, and let us lead you to the must-see sights of the Eternal City. We go the extra mile with hotel pick-up and drop-off, so you and your loved ones can relax like VIPs from start to finish. Enjoy a few hours with a professional driver to keep his eyes on the road while a five-star tour guide pampers you every step of the way, taking you straight to the highlights and sharing their insider knowledge. And, since this private tour is all about you, you’ll have every opportunity to interact with your friendly Rome expert and have all of your questions answered. While we’ve hand-tailored our Best of Rome Private Driving Tour to cover some of the city’s most intriguing sights, it’s your tour and we’re more than happy to tailor it to fit you – so don’t hesitate to let us know about any requests you may have!
Take a casual stroll to admire the highlights of Rome’s historic center
Stretch your legs and walk in the footsteps of ancient Roman emperors, gladiators, and artists. With one-way streets and high-traffic areas, we guarantee that walking this territory is much more enjoyable than honking our way through it. This way we can relax as we reminisce and admire some of Rome’s most spectacular monuments, with an authentic Italian gelato in hand! Get up close and personal with the Trevi Fountain and revel in its incomparable beauty while we fill you in on the artist, the history, and the legend. We certainly won’t stop you from snapping some selfies and throwing a coin in over your shoulder! Admire the astonishing architecture of Rome, and the extravagant artistic contributions of centuries past. Cross modern roads and charming alleyways to stand before the glorious Pantheon, built in 126 AD. Gaze upon Bernini’s dazzling 17th-century sculptures at the Basilica of Saint Mary above Minerva and Piazza Navona. Sample some classic Italian products amongst the market stalls at Campo di Fiori. Kick your feet up while you relive stories from the Renaissance and Romantic eras at the Spanish Steps. And, certainly, wonder about the unparalleled brilliance of Michelangelo Buonarroti as you stand in his exquisitely designed Piazza del Campidoglio, at the very heart of Rome.

What our Customers say...
Highly recommend!
We bonded with our guide Giuliano immediately. He was energetic and extremely knowledgeable of the city and deep history. We loved the small group guided tour as we were able to ask questions and dig deeper into Giuliano's knowledge of history. Seeing the city come alive at night was wonderful and encouraging for the rest of our trip. The gelato stop was delicious. Highly recommend What a Life Tours.”
Best Tour ever
This was the best thing we did on our week long trip in Rome. Elaine was friendly, knowledgeable, and quite funny. She kept our four children engaged and entertained. We learned more from her in one day than we had in our lives up to that point. I highly recommend this tour and specifically Elaine.”
Wonderful Private Day Tour!
Elaine did a wonderful job showing my wife and me many of the top spots in Rome. She was very passionate about describing the sites and educating us on the history of this amazing city. We would highly recommend her and this tour!!”

Tour description
Explore rome off the beaten path and discover its hidden gems on a walking and driving tour..
Rome is a city brimming with attractions, yet some of its most unforgettable sites are tucked away from the usual tourist trail. Discover a different side to the Eternal City with ease on this meticulously planned tour of its lesser visited, yet equally captivating neighborhoods and monuments. Leave the hassle of navigating the city to us and get ready to uncover the countless surprises that await.
Your Rome tour starts in a fascinating corner of the city usually overlooked by visitors: the Jewish Ghetto. We'll explore the neighborhood on foot, seeing incredible landmarks like the Teatro di Marcello, a verifiable hidden gem of ancient architecture.
Next, we’ll make our way across Tiber Island to the medieval neighborhood of Trastevere. We’ll stop off at a traditional Italian bakery for a taste of delicious Roman cookies and admire a beautiful historic neighborhood church.
Hop aboard a private minibus and head further afield to areas not easily accessible on your own.
This tour covers a lot of ground, so after a brief exploration of Trastevere, you'll board a private, air-conditioned minibus. With a dedicated driver behind the wheel and accompanied by your knowledgeable guide, it’s time to explore some of Rome’s ancient wonders that lie on the outskirts of the city proper.
Our first stop on the Rome driving tour is the Park of the Aqueducts, where some of the original stone structures that brought water into the city have been beautifully preserved. Stroll among these ancient marvels of engineering that were once responsible for bringing 300 million gallons (over a billion liters) of water every day to the fountains and baths of the city.
From there, we'll drive to Via Latina, one of the best surviving examples of a Roman road. The impeccably planned network of roads in ancient Rome was instrumental in transporting people, goods, and supplies between the capital and the rest of Italy. Lined with tombs dating from the first and second centuries A.D., Via Latina in particular is especially fascinating. This slice of the ancient world is often overlooked by other visitors and organized tours—but you’ll be glad you had the chance to explore it.
Boarding the minibus once more, we’ll head back into the city and make a quick stop at Circus Maximus. Last but certainly not least, we’ll take you to our favorite panoramic viewpoint in Rome, perched high atop Aventine Hill. Gaze out across the river towards St. Peter’s Basilica and be sure to have your camera handy! After a few precious moments admiring the views, we’ll head back down closer to the city center and drop you off not far from the Jewish Quarter where we began.
Spend a perfectly planned morning exploring Rome in the company of local experts.
Perhaps the most satisfying part of this Rome driving tour is the peace and quiet you’ll find at so many of the sights. These attractions aren’t known to most travelers and are difficult to access by public transport—which is where we can help. On this exclusive exploration, you’ll enjoy a private vehicle with a group of just 18 people or fewer, a professional driver, and a tour guide who will bring Rome to life through stories and local legends. It’s an unrivaled look at the Eternal City that most visitors won’t get the chance to experience.

Enjoyed this tour to sites off the beaten track that were away from the crowds and more serene. There were only four people in the group and Alleria (sp?) did a fine job of providing information at each site and along the way as we walked, and answering questions we had. My only suggestion would be to have audio sets available, especially at the beginning of the tour because of the competing traffic noise. Alleria had said the tour company only provided audio sets for groups of 6 or more, but it was difficult to hear her when we first started off, even though she tried to speak more loudly. Would recommend this tour.

Highly recommend this tour if visiting Rome. Visited places most tour companies do not go. Sylvia our tour guide was excellent. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the places we visited and we enjoyed being with her on this tour. Augusto our bus driver was excellent too!
Silvia was an amazing tour guide. She had so much knowledge about Rome and took us to such interesting places

Very interesting tour seeing some of the less visited and harder to access places in Rome. Andy was a brilliant guide, clearly passionate about his subject.
This is our first time with Walks and we would recommend without hesitation. Exceptional tour guide (and we have experienced many). What is amazing about this company is that if you book a tour, they will provide that tour, even if there is only one or two people. Terrific!

Next, you'll head to the official seat of the Pope at St. John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano), where you'll also see the iconic nearby Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta). Continue to the historic basilica of Saint Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) and St. Peter in Chains (San Pietro in Vincoli) on a half-day full of incredible Christian relics and history!
This tour visits three out of the four major basilicas of Rome. The fourth major basilica is St. Peter’s Basilica, which we visit on numerous private and small group Vatican tours .
Basilicas of Rome Private Driving Tour Description
Your 3-hour private guided tour includes:

Your own personal English-speaking expert guide
St. Paul Outside the Walls, Arch-Basilica of St. John in Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore, and St. Peter in Chains
Christian relics and art including Holy Stairs, Michelangelo’s Moses, and much more!
Important! Since the basilicas on this tour are sacred places, both men and women must cover their knees and shoulders. Otherwise, you may be refused entry. We understand that summers in Rome are hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.
Door-to-Door Service
To make this private Rome tour even smoother, we include hotel pick-up in central Rome and you'll be dropped off back at your accommodation (or elsewhere in central Rome, if you prefer) after the tour ends. Using a luxury climate-controlled vehicle, your friendly local driver will collect you at your preferred time and whisk you through the city in style, along with your own personal tour guide who has a deep knowledge of Catholic history and the sites your visit today.
The first stop on this private driving tour is the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (San Paolo Fuori le Mura), where the remains of the Apostle St. Paul are buried. Built during the fourth century A.D., the basilica is the second largest in Rome after St. Peter's Basilica. The church features incredible marble columns and houses stunning mosaics from the thirteenth century, as well as important Catholic relics including the San Paolo Holy Door and Baths of Caracella.
Founded during the fourth century in honor of St. John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, St. John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano) is also known as the Cathedral of Rome. This church is very important as it holds the official seat of the Pope. Named an Arch-basilica, this is the highest ranked Major Basilica out of the four in Rome.
Located opposite of the Arch-Basilica of St. John in Lateran are the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta). They are believed to be the very stairs that Christ climbed on the day of his crucifixion. In 1589 they were transferred by Pope Sixtus the V from the Palace of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem to their current location. At the top of the staircase is the Sancta Sanctorum, a chapel originally dedicated to St. Lawrence. This special chapel was the first of its kind, providing a private place of worship for the papacy.
The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest church in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Built in the fourth century, legend has it that the Virgin Mary herself influenced where the church was built. In a dream that came to both Pope Liberius and the Patrician John, she requested that a church be built in a spot that she would reveal.
Back then, a blanket of snow covered the Esquiline Hill on August 5th as an indication that this was the spot. For this reason, the church is sometimes nicknamed ‘Our Lady of the Snows’. The basilica still retains the bell tower (the highest in Rome) as well as some impressive fifth-century mosaics and marble columns from the medieval era. You'll also see the tomb of famous sculpture Bernini here.
Just outside, in Piazza di San Giovanni, your guide will also show you the remarkable 300-ton Lateran Obelisk—the largest standing ancient Egyptian obelisk in the world.
The last stop on this tour is the church of St. Peter in Chains (San Pietro in Vincoli), which houses the relic of Saint Peter’s chains from the time he was imprisoned in Jerusalem. With its simple decoration, the Basilica San Pietro in Vincoli stands apart from other churches built during the same time period.
The church is also home to Michelangelo’s wonderful Statue of Moses which was intended as a funeral monument for warrior pope, Pope Julius II.
After a few hours exploring incredibly Catholic heritage, your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel. If you'd rather stay out and explore the city and find a place to eat, just ask your private guide for recommendations.

Wonderful Tour
An excellent introduction to the major basilicas of Rome. Our guide, Pia, was superb and her knowledge base is impressive. I wish I were younger and could take one of her classes! Would definitely recommend this tour, and Pia, to others.
Fantastic Tour!!
Our tour of the major basilica’s was nothing short of spectacular. Our wonderful guide explained so much about papal history and details within each one, and how they differ based on when they were first constructed. Our driver was superb and got right next to the entrance of each place.
Dr M B Harkins
Our driver and guide did an amazing job at getting us from place to place in comfort an ease of access. Pia was very knowledgeable and great at providing a detailed description of the four beautiful basilica's we visited. I will definitely ask for her by name for my net trip to Rome in two years!

Why This Unique Tour In Rome Was My Favorite Way To Explore The City
R ome has a rich history and vibrant culture that can transport you to a different era. Long before I ever visited Rome, what I knew of the ancient city came from the movies. I’m a classic movie buff, and Roman Holiday , the 1953 romantic comedy, is my favorite film.
The story unfolds as Princess Ann, who, during a visit to Rome, escapes her guardians to explore the city. Enter a handsome newspaper reporter who whisks her away on the back of his Vespa. I’ll never forget the images of iconic landmarks in the eternal city whizzing by as the movie unfolds.
On a recent visit, I found that exploring Rome by Vespa Sidecar Tour can make you feel like you’re living a similar fantasy.
My private Vespa Sidecar Tour was provided by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi as part of a hosted stay at the beautiful hotel. As always, all opinions are my own.
The Vespa Sidecar Tour
The Vespa Sidecar tour offers a unique way to discover the city’s famous landmarks, hidden gems, and picturesque squares. As you motor through the bustling city, you can imagine yourself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure.
The company’s owner, Luca Di Trapano, explained that the Vespa Sidecar Tour was born in a flash of inspiration after 2 decades of giving tours in Rome. He thought the concept was genius but later learned his idea was 45 years too late.
The makers of the Vespa stopped producing the model equipped with a sidecar in 1968. Not easily deterred, he persevered and brought his dream to reality. Since 2018, Luca has welcomed over 20,000 passengers on board without a single accident. He told me, “It is like having sailed through the streets of Rome with four or five gigantic cruise ships!”
The tours are 3 hours, depending on traffic. The price is 110 euros per person (about $117) on the small group tour (12 guests max). You can take the tour solo as I did or with a companion or group. Trade places halfway through for a new perspective. A private tour’s price depends on the number of guests.
Here are several reasons why you should explore Rome on this unique Vespa tour.
Easy Meeting Point
Piazza della Repubblica is the tour meeting point. The square is well-connected and easy for drop-offs by taxis and vehicles. Take the subway Line A to the Repubblica-Teatro dell’Opera stop. It’s just a 2-minute walk from the Central Termini Railway Station.
Pro Tip: If you want somewhere to stay close by, I recommend Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel . A restored 19th-century, crescent-shaped palazzo, it fronts Piazza della Repubblica, where the Vespa tour starts. At the assigned time, I met my guide, Alessio, at the concierge desk. My chariot, i.e. baby blue Vespa, was waiting just outside.
The Iconic Landmarks Of Rome
Exploring the highlights of the Eternal City, we visited 12 sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens. There were several opportunities to stop, stretch our legs, and linger, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.
It’s A Blast!
When exploring the beautiful city of Rome, I loved all the astonished looks on people’s faces as we made our way down tight alleys and broad avenues. I felt like a movie star — everyone was smiling, waving, and snapping our photo. We must have been quite a sight; something special to share with family members when you get home.
Avoid The Crowds
What’s the best way to avoid crowds and see a different side of Rome? See it on a Vespa! If you’re fearless, you could rent one yourself. But my advice? Enlist a pro. You will feel much safer riding next to or behind someone who understands the ins and outs of Rome’s streets, where locals think traffic lanes are merely suggestions.
It’s A Beautiful Ride
The Vespa is a classic: These stunning coupes from Italy are iconic on the streets of Rome. Piaggio & Co. started making the Vespa after WWII as cheap, affordable transportation. Eventually, in 1953, the hit movie Roman Holiday showed the world how great a Vespa could be, resulting in record sales. Like the Colosseum, the Italian scooter has remained a part of Italy’s landscape. You will feel like an authentic Italian in the sidecar of a Vespa.
Unique And Unforgettable Way To See The Eternal City
Unlike larger vehicles, a Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As you zip through the streets, you’ll experience the city in an exciting and unique way. Your guide will share his knowledge of the city’s history and culture, providing insights into the backstories of the pivotal figures in the Roman Empire.
A Driver And Official Guide Rolled Into One
My driver, Alessio, wasn’t just a history buff: He’s also an official guide, which means he’s been trained to lead tours and provide in-depth information on all the sites you’ll see. He knows how to keep you engaged, entertained, and informed, making your Vespa tour an unforgettable experience. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating facts, historical anecdotes, and his favorite neighborhoods and restaurants. With his expertise and passion for sharing the city’s rich history, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind adventure that you’ll remember for years to come.
Radio-Connected Modern Whispers
As we cruised along the streets of Rome, Alessio provided commentary directly into my ear through a modern whisper system. He pointed out the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square where the Pope makes his Sunday address. It was chilling to see the balcony above the Piazza Venezia, where Mussolini delivered his most famous speech, the declaration of war on France and Britain in 1940.
A Sense Of Freedom And Excitement
Take in Rome’s sights, sounds, and smells from the open-air Vespa sidecar. You can enjoy the warm breeze on your face, witness the daily life of Romans, and immerse yourself in the city’s timeless beauty.
Pro Tip: Three hours is about the right amount of time to get a taste of Rome. I saw much more than I would in a walking tour, and it was a better experience than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour — we could go where large coaches could not.
I Felt Safe
The guides are expert drivers and the top-class helmets have face shields and disposable head covers. The passenger wears a seatbelt with a shoulder harness. We traveled at the most 24 miles per hour; just the right pace. Once you are on board, your unease fades away as you sit back, hold on, and enjoy the thrill of exploring Rome on a Vespa.
The Hidden Gems Of Rome
Rome is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and a real bucket-list destination. But allow some time to visit the hidden gems many tourists miss. Janiculum Hill, called the “Eighth Hill of Rome,” is a beautiful, often overlooked area with the best views of Rome. It’s a bit of a climb on foot, but on a Vespa, sit back and enjoy the ride. Piazzale Garibaldi in the center has the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument with a cannon that fires daily at noon. Don’t miss the 17th-century Aqua Paola Fountain.
Cappuccino And Cornetto
After visiting the Pantheon, we stopped for a cappuccino and cornetto, the traditional Roman breakfast choice. Our baby blue Vespa was parked nearby and I enjoyed watching how much attention it got from passersby. On the afternoon tours, customers are offered gelato instead.
Unforgettable Experience
This is the perfect gift for someone who has done everything and an unforgettable experience for curious travelers of all ages. You will carry home remarkable moments and fun memories.
Would I recommend Vespa Sidecar Tour? Absolutely. If this had been my first time in Rome, it would have given me a good overview of the places I would like to return to for a deeper dive. I have been to Rome several times, but until now, I’ve never seen the eternal beauty of Rome from the seat of a Vespa sidecar. And the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain guarantees I’ll be back.
