Vedder introduced Watt, sharing the story of how the producer met Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready many years ago at the same venue and asked for career advice, which he followed “for about six weeks.” "He’s the reason why I’m here with you and these songs exist," Vedder said of Watt.

Before the encore he alluded to the pandemic, noting he had faced “a number of hurdles and challenges” to complete and release the record and make it to the stage. “I meant to ask about you, too,” he told the crowd. “I’m sure it wasn’t easy to get in this room tonight. So I’m happy!”

Eddie Vedder Officially Kicks Off “Earthlings Tour” at NYC’s Beacon Theater: Recap + Setlist

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Eddie Vedder Officially Kicks Off “Earthlings Tour” at NYC’s Beacon Theater: Recap + Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

Has anybody ever successfully covered a Tom Petty song? It’s a serious question. Despite the sturdiness of his material, it’s hard to name an inspired rendition — even after an inundation of “Wildflowers” covers after Petty’s too-young death. That said, Eddie Vedder — a close friend of Petty’s — came closer than ever on February 3rd at NYC’s gilded Beacon Theater.

But he didn’t reach for low-hanging fruit, like “Don’t Do Me Like That” or “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Instead, the Pearl Jam bandleader — backed by his new band the Earthlings — covered “Room at the Top,” the opener from Petty’s for-real-ones-only 1999 album with the Heartbreakers, Echo .

This relatively deep cut seems to sum up Vedder’s place in the rock landscape, both in its context and content. Echo was Petty’s “divorce” and “heroin” record — and while neither is applicable to Vedder at the moment, the deaths of his half-brother, Chris Mueller, and close friend, Chris Cornell, came in a one-two punch and knocked him off his axis .

Unlike grunge colleagues Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, and Andrew Wood, though, Vedder made it, intact and happy — and Thursday’s gig was a heartening reminder of that. (Vedder and his Earthlings played a private show at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on February 1st; this concert served as the official tour kickoff.)

Not only is Pearl Jam going strong after more than 30 years, with the underrated Gigaton in the immediate rearview. Vedder remains creatively vibrant in his own right, with Earthling , his first solo album since 2011’s Ukulele Songs (out February 11th). Plus, with Omicron on the retreat, he gets to kick out the jams with two of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Chilis in question are guitarist Josh Klinghoffer — who left pre-pandemic and was replaced by a returning John Frusciante — and drummer Jack Irons, who joined Pearl Jam for 1996’s No Code and left after 1998’s Yield . (The latter just celebrated its 24th anniversary; Vedder incorrectly shouted it out as being 25.)

Editor's Pick

With Earthling, Eddie Vedder Becomes a Rock Elder

Rounding out the Earthlings are guitarist Andrew Watt, who produced the album; bassist Chris Chaney, who hails from Jane’s Addiction; and Glen Hansard , who you may remember as the sensitive busker from the 2007 film Once .

Hansard opened the show, ably commanding the audience with just an acoustic guitar and some well-employed effects. His lapsings into full-bore screaming wore thin after a few tunes — maybe that’s just a side effect of trying to work a room of that size.

Still, hearing “Falling Slowly” — you know, the one that goes “I don’t know you/ But I want you” — after (possibly) more than a decade gave the audience palpable fuzzy emotions. Thankfully, Hansard didn’t overstay his welcome, emotively slugging out some solo and Frames tunes before exiting stage left.

The time-warp vibe continued as Vedder and his comrades took the stage, and not just because the audience screamed, “I graduated high school in 1992.” (Props to a colleague in the press section for that observation.) With his Earthlings, he opened with not one, not two, but three covers, all of which can ostensibly be found in any karaoke songbook in America.

Those were R.E.M.’s “Drive,” which Vedder inhabited beautifully; the aforementioned Petty cover; and the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” In the latter, Vedder couldn’t resist making a mildly cringe-y 2022 update: “I feel that ice is quickly melting.”

Sure, these were obvious picks, but that choice was nobler than buttering up the audience with selections from you-know-who. In the midsection of the setlist, the Earthlings tried out a good chunk of their titular album.

This ranged from the lackluster and generically uplifting “Invincible” to the fantastic “Fallout Today,” which boasts a craggy melody and philosophical vibe. Somewhere in between, quality-wise, were “The Dark,” “The Haves,” and “Long Way” — not to be confused with Pearl Jam’s “Take the Long Way,” whether or not it’s meant to be a sequel.

After the showcase of new tunes for fans — besides “The Haves,” almost nobody outside of journalists had heard these — the Earthlings hurtled back into cover-band mode (including Patti Smith and Pretenders covers), with a few Pearl Jam songs sprinkled therein.

Without the muscle of his main band, “Porch” fell flat; however, “Better Man” sparkled on the merits of just being a sublime pop song. “Wishlist,” from Yield , came close, although the accelerated tempo didn’t do it any favors — nor do the lyrics, which include an embarrassing line about a Christmas tree.

But after a muscular rendition of “All Along the Watchtower,” any misgivings with the gig melted away: it’s arresting to watch Vedder smilingly rock out in a gorgeous sold-out theater with old friends, after so much time off as a solo act and two years of interminable pandemic doldrums.

What more could a musician ask for? Despite the insanity and grief and elation that come with such a long and complicated career, he had a room at the top of the world — and he ain’t coming down.

Vedder plays the Beacon Theatre again tonight (February 4th). Tickets for that date, and the rest of the tour, are available via Ticketmaster .

Eddie Vedder Announces 2022 U.S. Tour With New Band the Earthlings

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Eddie Vedder is hitting the road in February to support his upcoming LP Earthling , and he’s bringing along his new band the Earthlings. The group includes Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, former Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, guitarist/vocalist Glen Hansard, and guitarist Andrew Watt.

The tour kicks off Feb. 3rd at the Beacon Theater in New York City and wraps up Feb. 22 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. Tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan Registration system. Click here for more information.

Eddie Vedder and the Earthlings made their live debut Sept. 25 at the Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California. Their set featured a handful of Vedder originals (“I’ll Be Waiting,” “Tender Mercies”) along with numerous classic rock covers (The Who’s “I’m One,” the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go”), and a few Pearl Jam tunes (“Better Man,” “Corduroy.”)

This time around, expect to hear a few more songs from Earthling , which arrives on Feb. 11. It’s Vedder’s first solo alum since 2011’s Ukulele Songs , and it was produced by Andrew Watt.

The tour is a mere eight shows because the band members need to return to their day jobs not long after it wraps. The Red Hot Chili Peppers begin their reunion tour with John Frusciante on June 4 in Seville, Spain, and Pearl Jam start a European tour two weeks later at the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands. They’re also going to announce makeup dates for their aborted 2020 American arena tour, which may take place before they head to Europe.

Eddie Vedder Forms New Band for Last-Minute Replacement Set at Ohana Fest

The Pearl Jam frontman filled in for Kings of Leon and delivered an 11-song set of solo songs, Pearl Jam staples, and covers

Eddie Vedder Forms New Band for Last-Minute Replacement Set at Ohana Fest

After Kings of Leon were forced to cancel their headlining set at Ohana Festival due to the death of the Followill brothers’ mother, the festival’s founder, Eddie Vedder , stepped in as a last-minute replacement. Joined by a backing band that included Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, ex-Chili Peppers guitarist/ current Pearl Jam touring member Josh Klinghoffer, bassist Pino Palladino, Glen Hansard, and Andrew Watt, Vedder performed an 11-song set that leaned heavily on covers and some Pearl Jam staples.

After kicking off the set with performances of R.E.M.’s “Drive” and Pearl Jam’s “Long Road,” Vedder offered his condolences by playing KOL’s 2003 track “Molly’s Chambers.” He then offered the first public performance of his new solo single “Long Way,” and was joined by his 17-year-old daughter, Olivia, for a rendition of “My Father’s Daughter,” from the Flag Day   soundtrack. Watch fan-captured footage of the concert and see the full setlist below.

Update – September 27th: The band is officially called Eddie Vedder and The Earthlings, a nod to Vedder’s upcoming solo album Earthling . They returned to the Ohana stage on Saturday night for a second set.

Vedder will return to the stage as a headliner Saturday, and again with the rest of Pearl Jam on Sunday. Earthling,  Vedder’s first solo LP in ten years , is set to arrive soon, though its release date is still TBD.

Setlist: Drive (R.E.M. cover) Long Road (Pearl Jam song) Molly’s Chambers (Kings of Leon cover) Porch (Pearl Jam song) Long Way Tender Mercies My Father’s Daughter (Olivia Vedder cover) (with Olivia Vedder) I’m One (The Who cover) Corduroy (Pearl Jam song) Precious (Pretenders cover) Purple Rain (Prince cover) (with Josh Klinghoffer) (on vocals & guitar)

Setlist + Video – Pearl Jam Launch 2024 Tour

Pearl Jam kicked off their 2024 global tour on Saturday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The evening’s set list included classics like “Daughter,” “Alive” and “Yellow Ledbetter,” plus selections from the band’s recently released album, Dark Matter . There was also a jarring moment in which guitarist Mike McCready fell off the stage during his solo in “Porch,” though he appeared to be alright.

You can view fan-filmed footage from the concert, as well as a complete set list, below.

Dark Matter was produced by Andrew Watt, who Eddie Vedder recently described as the “perfect producer” for Pearl Jam.

“His style is he has got a guitar on the whole time you’re playing with him, he’s playing with you, he’s playing with the band. We’ve never done anything like that before,” Vedder explained to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “He actually can fit in a way that it sounds right, and that’s just how he produces. He plays along. He’s got to feel the music in the way that the band does.”

Where Does Pearl Jam Head Next?

Pearl Jam will play a second show at the same venue in Vancouver, before traveling south to the U.S. They’ll perform in cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Seattle and then take the tour overseas to the U.K., Germany, Spain and Portugal. The band will return to the States in August, hitting east coast locations like Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and more, and finally fly to New Zealand and Australia for September shows.

NME  gave ‘Dark Matter’  a glowing four-star review , and praised it as “some of their strongest work in recent memory”.

“For those longing for the charismatic songwriting that first put the band on the map over three decades ago, ‘Dark Matter’ will come as a pleasant surprise,” it read. “Not only does it showcase Pearl Jam reclaiming the charm that first made them a force to be reckoned with back in 1991, it comes alongside some of their most impressive musicianship yet, as well as a determination to take risks after years of playing it safe.”

Eddie Vedder recently said that  he thinks the band have “one or two” good records left in them  after ‘Dark Matter’.

“The older you get the better you are at living in the present,” he said. “The understanding you have less time is the biggest number in the quotient. The goal is to keep making music.”

The band’s drummer Matt Cameron has also been speaking about the time that he received a cease-and-desist letter from KISS as a teenager .

Pearl Jam and Vancouver have a history, as Eddie Vedder reminded an arena of faithful last night.

Concert review: Pearl Jam opens new tour with an epic night in Vancouver Back to video

It was the first date of the Seattle band’s current North American tour and the vocalist laid it on thick, praising the city, recalling their first gig here at the Town Pump (in ’91, opening for Alice in Chains), mentioning how they had decided we were the right choice for opening night of their new world tour, and referencing the Canucks and even today’s Vancouver Marathon .

In between the kind words, Vedder and crew played the hits, the deep cuts, the new stuff, and a few covers in a Rogers Arena concert that lasted for over two-and-a-half hours.

It was longer than Napoleon.

To start, the band eased into the evening with a few midtempo sure bets, including the sepia-toned Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town. The slowburn paid off with song four, Given to Fly, a jet-fuelled rocker that segued into world premieres of four new tracks — the barnburners Scared of Fear, React, Respond, and the new album’s title song, and the moodier, delicate Wreckage. The latter, with its trademark PJ guitar riffage, sounds destined to join the ranks of fan favourites.

The band returned the show to terra firma with Daughter, one of the long-running outfit’s most revered numbers. Correctly gauging that the audience would lose its collective s–t if he did something like, oh, I don’t know, drop a few lines into the song from one of the country’s most beloved musical institutions, Vedder added a verse from Tragically Hip’s Bobcaygeon. 15,000 or so Canadians roared their approval.

Pearl Jam kick off their Dark Matter World Tour in Vancouver with a full house at Rogers Arena. Great show. They killed it. @PearlJam #vancouver pic.twitter.com/isArgKYWK3 — Alicia Doyle (@digital_newsgal) May 5, 2024

The reference brought to mind the late, great Gord Downie, who connected to the audience in the same intentional, committed way that Vedder does.

Anyway, back to the show. If you wanted deep cuts, you got ‘em, with Leatherman, played live for the “first time since 2016” according to setlist.fm , and the deepest cut of all — Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns by Mother Love Bone, the proto-Seattle band co-founded by future Pearl Jammers Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament.

It was about an hour into the proceedings that Vedder started reaching for the wine. I must say, it’s refreshing to see someone enjoying a tipple onstage in today’s careerist, ultracautious live music environment. Or maybe I’ve just been going to the wrong shows.

First night jitters were apparent: The band screwed up a song (Red Mosquito, from 1996’s No Code) — and this right after the singer had pointed out the soundman to the crowd, saying that he’d been with the band for 20 years and his only job is to adjust two buttons, the “Suck” and “Don’t Suck” buttons. Talk about jinxing yourself.

Otherwise, the players were in the pocket, as one would expect from an act at this level. And Vedder’s voice sounded phenomenal; he seems to have lost none of his emotional power or grit or range. But were they on fire?

Let’s just say that their second Vancouver show, Monday night, could leave this one in the dust.

Not to jinx it …

Another set of Dark Matter material included Upper Hand, with a chorus stickier even than the Rogers Arena floor; Won’t Tell, a ringing slab of ‘90s guitar-rock; and Running, the record’s leanest and meanest. The lyrics of Won’t Tell, Vedder informed us, are based on a dream that bassist Jeff Ament had that involved “a Canadian woman.” Make of that what you will.

A taste of Upper Hand #PearlJam pic.twitter.com/yeG0FqCUPw — father hubbard (@fatherhubbard) May 5, 2024

Ament, by the way, wore a tour T-shirt from the band Idles — perhaps bought at the British act’s much-raved about show the previous night at the PNE Forum.

Throughout the concert, a V-shaped wall-to-wall screen behind the band complemented the performance with graphics, including musician and audience close-ups and cosmological images, as befits the album title (“dark matter” being a scientific term for matter that does not interact with light or the electromagnetic field).

After a jammy, long-winded Porch, the first selection of the night from the group’s 1991, 13-million-selling debut Ten, the gang of pushing-60-somethings took a well-earned breather. Vedder returned for a solo version of Tom Petty’s I Won’t Back Down before Ament, lead guitarist Mike McCready, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, drummer Matt Cameron, and touring musicians Josh Klinghoffer and Kenneth “Boom” Gaspar, filed back out.

After Black, another Ten cut, Vedder dedicated Dark Matter’s sweetest song, Something Special, to one of his daughters, who he said was at the show.

No one, not band or audience, wanted to leave as the house lights came on and Pearl Jam, one of the last standard-bearers of the Gen X dream, blasted through Alive, a signature anthem that has never sounded more relevant, and Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World (ditto). Setting Sun, Dark Matter’s last and perhaps most hopeful track, saw us out into the night.

Side note: Opening the current month-long West Coast leg of the Dark Matter World Tour is Seattle’s Deep Sea Diver. Before the headliner’s Saturday night set, vocalist/guitarist Jessica Dobson tossed off barbed, scrappy licks as she led the five-piece through songs from Impossible Weight — KEXP Seattle listeners’ favourite album from 2000 — and from a forthcoming record.
