Located on the banks of the Nile, Egypt’s capital city of Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africa. This is Egypt’s sunniest southern city. The town is small enough to walk around, and life there is slow and relaxing. Aswan is in a perfect location along the Nile where visitors can watch sailboats passing by or dine in a floating restaurant. Every night, dancers and musicians perform in the cultural center.

Giza is the third largest city in Egypt. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River southwest of Cairo. The most famous attraction in the city of Giza, located on the Giza plateau, is the pyramids. Also on the Giza plateau you can see the Great Sphinx and perhaps ride a camel.

Abu Simbel:

The archaeological area of Abu Simbel consists of two temples. The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside as a monument to Pharaoh Ramesses II and queen Nefertari. The temples were saved when the rising waters of the Nile threatened, and were raised higher for protection in 1968. In the innermost shrine seats statues of the gods Ptah, Amun-Ra, the deified Ramses II and Re-Horakhte. The temple is so precisely placed that on February 22 and October 22, the first rays of the morning sun shine through the entire temple and illuminate the four gods.

Some believe that they had sloped sides so the pharaoh could symbolically climb to the sky and live forever. Today there are over 100 pyramids of all different shapes and sizes in Egypt, as archaeologists continue to uncover and identify previously unknown pyramids.

The Sphinx has been a symbol of Egypt for thousands of years. With the body of a lion and the head of what is generally believed to be Pharaoh Khafra, the Great Sphinx of Giza symbolizes strength and wisdom. For centuries, visitors have included poets, scholars and adventurers seeking knowledge about its history and the secrets it might hold.

Today, the boy king is one of the best-known pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Yet, from the time of his mysterious death at 19 until the year 1922, he was relatively unknown until his tomb was finally found. The entrance was covered with debris, but the inside was completely intact along with murals and so many artifacts that it took ten years to catalog them. Many of the artifacts travel the world on exhibit and provide insight into the fascinating ancient Egyptian civilization.

Camels in the desert:

Humans have used camels for transport for thousands of years. Built for traversing the desert, they can carry about 500 pounds, can go up to six months without food and water, and can easily trek their way through sandstorms. They are herbivores with tough, leathery mouths who can eat prickly desert plants that most animals cannot. When water is available, camels rehydrate faster than any other mammal and can drink up to 30 gallons at a time in just under 15 minutes.

Expert Advice

No one drinks the tap water in Egypt – not even the locals – so be prepared to buy lots of bottled water.

You should definitely pack comfortable walking shoes, preferably with crepe or rubber soles, as well as a hat for sun protection, and swimwear for free time when on the cruise. Please note that dress in the Egypt is conservative; however casual touring wear such as shorts and tee shirts are acceptable for tourists, though you may feel more comfortable in long pants or long skirts. Linen is recommended so as to protect you from heat and sun.

When I am traveling here I like to keep some cash on hand. I’ve found that many Egyptians rely on tips for the majority of their income.

The only largely intact survivor of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World," the Great Pyramid of Giza (a.k.a. the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Earth… and reigned as the world's tallest man-made structure for nearly 4,000 years! Completed sometime around 2500 BC, it's the oldest and largest of the complex known as the Great Pyramids of Giza, which also includes the Pyramids of Khafre (Chephren) and Menkaure (Mykerinos), as well as the Great Sphinx, from about the same period as the Great Pyramid. The Valley of the Kings

Nestled in Egypt's Theban hills west of the Nile River, near today's Luxor, stands the Valley of the Kings – where, between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, complexes of tombs were cut out of the rock to house the remains of the Pharaohs and other nobles of Egypt's New Kingdom, and prepare them for the afterlife. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains more than 60 identified tombs and chambers. While many were once filled with treasures, most have been plundered through the ages… with the exception of that of the famous tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered intact in the 1920s, whose artifacts and remains have been removed and preserved. Visiting any of these tombs today is an experience not to be missed.

Egypt Tours, Vacations and Travel Packages

With a population of approximately 90,000,000 people, Egypt is located in the northeast corner of the African continent on the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered to the northeast by Palestine and Israel , the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west. The geography of Egypt can be divided into four different regions: the Nile Valley and Delta, the Western Desert, the Eastern Desert and the Sinai Peninsula.

It has borrowed from Greek, Roman, Christian and Arab influences over time. But even the less enthusiastic will marvel at what is on offer. Imagine a country basically a desert totally redeemed by the River Nile which runs through a fertile well-watered lush valley.

What are the top places to see and things to do in Egypt?

This is a very large and sprawling city with an abundance of exciting places to visit on Egypt vacations. Probably your first one will be the Egyptian Museum and the best place to delve into Egypt’s amazing history and past glory.  It contains one of the world’s most important collections of ancient artefacts and the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities.  The Giza Pyramids on the outskirts of Cairo are the only remaining one of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World. They are 4,000 years old and are amazing because of their extraordinary shape, perfectly made structure, and sheer size. For a true Cairo experience, visit the Khan Al Khalili Bazaar with its mediaeval flavour and shops found in narrow lanes. The Cairo Citadel is a mediaeval Islamic fortification located high on a hill with amazing views of the city. It is now a well-preserved historic site comprising mosques, palaces, and museums.

Central Egypt

T his is the heartland of Ancient Egypt and an excellent area on Egypt tours to explore history and marvel at the wonders of a bygone time. 

You can start with the Luxor Temple, a temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes) constructed in approximately 1400 BC. It may have been where many of the kings of Egypt were crowned. Karnak is an outstanding complex of sanctuaries, temples, chapels, and obelisks. The complex is a vast open-air site and includes the Karnak Open Air Museum. It is believed to be the second-most visited historical site in Egypt after the pyramids. The Valley of the Kings is where, from the 16th to the 11th Centuries BC, tombs were constructed for Pharaohs. It has been the site of royal burials since around 2100 BC.

Southern Egypt

A bu Simbel is where you will find two enormous rock temples in a village in Nubia only rediscovered at the beginning of the 19th Century. The twin temples of Abu Simbe l were originally carved out of a mountainside in the 13th Century BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Ramses II. They are a monument to him and his Queen Nefertari. The whole complex was relocated to above the Aswan High Dam as it was in danger of being flooded by the creation of Lake Nasser. The amazing Aswan High Dam was built across the Nile in Aswan between 1960 and 1970 AD and had a significant effect on the economy of Egypt due to its ability to increase water storage.

Northern Egypt

Saint Catherine's Monastery, on the Sinai Peninsula where, according to the Old Testament, Moses received the Ten Commandments, lies at the foot of Mount Sinai, near the town of Saint Catherine. The monastery is one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world. It contains the world's oldest continually operating library and houses priceless works of art including mosaics, The Egyptian city of Alexandria is not only famous for its spectacular location on the Mediterranean Sea but also, for the man who built it to rule the world for thousands of years ago, Alexander the Great Highlights here include the Bibliotheca Alexandrina , a huge library with a unique design and the El Montazah Palace, once a summer getaway for the King. 

What about cruises on the Nile River?

This is certainly the most relaxing way to view Central Egypt’s treasures. Almost all Nile cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan in both directions and usually take a minimum of 4 days one way. There are cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan which last as long as 12 to 13 days one way. Most Nile cruises visit the popular sites of Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo before disembarking in either Luxor or Aswan. There are a lot of choices as it has been recorded that there are around 200 Nile River Cruise ships. These range from traditional paddle steamers to luxurious modern cruise ships. Most cruise companies employ the services of an Egyptologist, who will be your guide around the ancient sites you visit along the way. Modern vessels usually have a swimming pool while some provide nightly entertainment in the form of belly dancing shows. At night, many of the temples and monuments are illuminated and the sight of them from the river can be breathtaking on Egypt vacations.

What about Egyptian resorts?

Hurghada is the main tourist centre on trips to Egypt and is known for the excellent diving and snorkelling available on the Red Sea Coast on an Egypt tour. Visitors choose Hurghada on a trip to Egypt as it offers an excellent beach vacation. The waters here are clear and calm for much of the year making it a popular water sports destination. Located at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in Sharm El Sheik, once a simple fishing village, present-day Sharm El Sheik is a well-known port and resort town and is regarded as one of the finest diving spots in the world on an Egypt vacation.

Egypt Travel Information

When is the best time to visit egypt.

Egypt has two seasons. It enjoys a mild winter which lasts from October to April and a hot summer from May to September. It should be borne in mind that in summer, the heat can be uncomfortable. If considering a stay on the Red Sea coast, June to September is a good time to visit the beach resorts. Despite being the peak of summer, temperatures on the coast are much cooler than those of the rest of Egypt.

What types of tours are available in Egypt?

The ideal itinerary to really enjoy an Egypt tour and discover its charms is to combine a stopover in Cairo followed by a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. Add on if required an excursion to  Abu Simbel. Cruises are available for all tastes and budgets. What else should I know about travelling in Egypt?

You will need a visa to travel to and inside Egypt. You can get one when you arrive at Cairo airport. We can include visa fees and proceeds in your itinerary upon request. When you leave Egypt, you must show proof of entry via a stamp on your valid passport. If you don’t provide this stamp, officials may prevent you from leaving Egypt.

It is a good idea to have insurance if you need to cancel your trip or any medical need while abroad. Most insurance policies also cover baggage loss/damage or problems completing the trip due to circumstances beyond your control. In general, for women traveling to Egypt, anything that is below the knee should be fine. Short sleeves should be fine as well, but nothing too short or too tiny. You do not need to cover your head in Egypt but do dress modestly. Wear pants or long skirts. It is hot in the summertime so that loose-fitting pants will be more comfortable than a pair of skinny jeans. It is also dusty and dirty, so that white clothing will appear soiled far more quickly than other colors’ clothing.

Egypt’s power grid is set up for 220V AC. Some rural areas only have 110V AC. Sockets are either the “Type C” Europlug or the “Type E” and “Type F” Schuko plug. You’ll need to purchase an adapter for devices from North America. Outlets marked as 110V or “For Shavers Only” won’t work for devices not rated for 110V and may even damage them. Egypt is very dry in some places and very wet in others. Be prepared for a hot and dry climate. It can get cold in the northern regions if you happen to visit in the Winter. Most tourists visit during the cooler months from December to February. February to April and October to November is the best time of the year climate-wise to see the pyramids and Valley of the Kings. It can be very hot and dusty in April because of winds blowing in from the Sahara, so visiting sites can be a bit of a problem during that month. Ramadan: Ramadan is perhaps the most important holiday in Egypt. Spring (March–May) and autumn (Oct & Nov) are the best times to visit Egypt, when it’s hot but not debilitating so. In summer (June–Sept) the south and desert are ferociously hot and the pollution in Cairo is at its worst, with only the coast offering a respite from the heat. During this time, sightseeing is best limited to early morning or afternoon “Historical places are opening almost from 06:00 to 17:00”. In winter (Dec–Feb), most places are reasonably warm during the day, but chilly at night, while the desert can get very cold indeed. The Mediterranean Coast can be windy and wet in winter.

If weather is your primary concern, it is clear now that the best time to visit Egypt is during the northern hemisphere fall, winter or early spring (October to April), when temperatures are cooler but you are still guaranteed sun. To avoid the crowds at ancient sites like the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel, try to avoid peak season (Christmas and New Year holidays). Tourism in Egypt is booming this time of the year so make sure you plan in advance.

To avoid roaming charges, it's probably best to buy a local SIM card in Egypt. Local SIM cards can be used on most unlocked phones from Europe, Asia and Australia and some unlocked phones from North America, but because Egypt's mobile phones run on a GSM network, a lot of cellphones from the US may not work. You'll still be able to access WI-FI when it's available, but a mobile plan may not be an appropriate way to get connected.

For most other travelers, picking up a local SIM is probably your least expensive course of action. Egypt has four main telecommunications providers – Orange, Vodafone, Etisalat and WE – and you can visit one of their kiosks or stores to get a SIM card. Here, they may ask for a passport and confirmation of address, then you will be able to get your mobile connected.

The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP, E£ or LE). You don't have to change money before arriving in Egypt. Money exchange service is easily available through banks and the Money exchange bureau. You will get a better rate for your USD, Euro or Sterling pounds, etc. in Egypt.

Many travelers like to arrive with some local money to pay for initial expenses. Egypt is a desert country that means the climate will be hot, sunny and dry.

Summer temperatures in southern cities like Luxor and Aswan can reach heights of 50°C (122°F) and don’t always drop at night. So, Light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. Just remember to cover up from your shoulders to below the knee.

Women are expected to dress more conservatively than men, for visits to mosques, female travelers should wear clothing that covers from ankle to elbow as well as decolletage and hair. Aside from mosque visits, you don’t have to cover your head. But being culturally sensitive by covering up is expected and respectful. The people of Egypt are well aware that not all people travelling are Muslim. If you want to swim, you can pack your regular swimsuit. All hotels with pools that cater to foreigners do not have dress codes.

Winters are generally mild, although temperatures can fall below 10°C (50°F) at night. If you’re travelling in winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. A light fleece or jacket should be sufficient to keep you warm on Egypt’s chillier nights specially at the end of December and January.

Tipping is customary for pretty much all services in Egypt. If you’re happy with the service provided by waiters, drivers and other workers, leaving a small tip is a good way to show your appreciation. For smaller purchases, rounding up the bill or not asking for any change is an appropriate way of leaving a tip. The amount you tip in Egypt will depend on where you are and what type of services you’re buying. As a general rule, expect to tip around 5-10% of your bill. Tipping encourages excellent service in the future and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry. Carrying small notes in the local currency will make tipping easier in Egypt. Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Cairo’s bazaars offer an infinite choice of jewellery, cotton textiles, leatherwork, glassware, brass and copperware, plus the world’s best selection of bellydancing costumes. The most popular souvenirs are Egyptian Papyrus Paper, the gold or silver cartouches with names in hieroglyphics. Alabaster figurines and vases are cheaper in the alabaster factories on Luxor’s west bank. While Aswan’s market is the best for spices, incense, basketwork, perfumes and natural essences and the elegant handmade perfume bottles are another popular souvenir.

Cotton textiles, the worldwide famous Egyptian cotton made products would be a good choice to buy in Egypt. Many shops, found in touristic and local markets and in large shopping malls sell pure cotton made shirts, trousers, and the famous traditional Galabeya, the Egyptian loose all in one robe. There are also some nice scarves, bed sheets, and bed covers sold almost everywhere in Egypt.

The tour was fantastic! A lot of early morning starts, however it meant we were able to see all the sights we wanted to, maximising our time! The guides were all so knowledgeable and friendly. The accomodation and food was great, however the cruise boat was a bit loud when sailing at night. Highlights were the hot air balloon, Abu Simbel and Karnak temple.

Particularly Saqqara as it is so much quieter than Giza and was interesting to see another type of pyramid. Our trip to Egypt was outstanding. We arrived early on check in day. We paid 20.00 to check in early and found our room at Tolip to be very nice. We checked out the pool and eating options that were very close. We felt safe. They scan everything through metal detectors everywhere you go. We changed our tour order and started with Alexandria. It’s a long bus ride with a nice stop to stretch in the middle. We had a delicious lunch at the fish place. The view over the sea was 10/10. The next day we went to Giza. We had Gabe as our Egyptologist. He was phenomenal. This was an advanced collegiate level tour - his knowledge was second to none. We learned so much and loved every single second of it. We were sad not to have him for the rest of our trip; however, when we transferred to Luxor we were met by Saladino and we were not disappointed. He also was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond to ensure everyone was taken care of. Our group was a tough one. My husband and I were the youngest by 26 years. This tour is NOT for those who need wheel chairs or can’t walk on very tough terrain. We spent a lot of our time helping the other elderly couples. Some tips - make sure you have 10 Egyptian pounds on you any time you need to use the restroom. It’s not free just about anywhere. Take your own bathroom paper. Most of them have none. Or they touch it and expect you to use it. We packed small toiletries in our day bags and took it everywhere. Bottled water in your BFF. Do not drink the water. Sunblock and bug spray are also a must. I didn’t love the boat. I know we were upgraded but it felt dated. Our cabin flooded in the bathroom. We were very quickly moved. The food was decent - but the people were fantastic. Every single one of them went above and beyond. My husband was hurt at Karnack by some guy who ran into his heel while pushing someone in our group in a wheelchair. I brought a first aid kit. I highly recommend taking one with you. Overall, it was an incredible trip. It was safe, we saw the most amazing temples and sites. It marked a huge check off of our bucket list.

We were extremely satisfied with the booking, which can be done online or with very friendly and experienced staff on the phone. Even the arrival at the airport in Cairo was perfectly organized and an SUV with a very friendly and very safe driver and a travel companion took us to the hotel. Everything was perfectly organized and carried out throughout the entire trip. Both tour guides from Beyond The Nile Tours in Cairo and during the Nile cruise were studied experts (languages, history, tourism) and explained everything in a very friendly, passionate and understandable way. The cruise ship was equipped with large cabins, was modern and had friendly staff and good food, mostly in buffet form. Abu Simbel is a must, we had 2 drivers in a small coach for the long journey and here too, despite our extra requests, everything was perfect and on time. We did this tour starting 6th April 2024. Overall it was really well organised and we had a fantastic experience of the ancient Egyptian history which we were after. Mahmoud is an excellent local guide and we felt safe and well looked after throughout the cruise and excursions. He was especially very good with kids. The communication from the tour operator was clear, responses were prompt and the website and apps are well designed. The hotel in Cairo, the cruise cabin and facilities were a bit dated and in need of repairs and upgrades, but that reflects in the price. We knew this from other reviews so there were no unwelcome surprises. We managed to do all the optional excursions and they were all well worth it and highly recommended.

We were a group of 7 people from Switzerland and did the "Enchanting Egypt Tours - Internal Flights Included" with the organizer "Beyond The Nile Tours". Everything was very well organized and the guides did a very good job. We would especially like to praise Mahmoud Noby. He fulfilled all of our wishes, even on the last day, when the tour was already over, he organized a boat and taxi for us. Mahmoud - THANK YOU SO MUCH. In Cairo we stayed in the “Tulip Golden Plaza” hotel and on the Nile in the “Princess Sarah” cruise ship. Both accommodations were fine, clean and with good meals. We didn't eat salad on the trip for fear of diarrhea. At the end of the trip we learned that in the kitchen the food was only washed with water from "controlled bottles". So we could have easily eaten the salad. Nobody in our group had diarrhea, and we didn't meet anyone else with diarrhea either. For us the highlights were: the pyramids, hot air balloon flight and the Valley of the Kings. We were surprised that photography is now allowed in the Valley of the Kings. When we were there in 2017, it was still strictly forbidden. The hot air balloon flight must be booked in addition. It will remain an unforgettable experience for us and we would repeat it at any time. Although the war in Egypt is close, we felt safe at all times. We love Egypt and the Nile and hope to come back soon.

Queen Cleopatras is a great tour, highly recommended, Anas is a great guide, he explained everything about Egyptian culture and toke care about our group! I will recommend to head office to deliver schedules with the tours to be able to plan our days. Cruse was amazing, service is great and everyone is very friendly! Also there is laundry available at your room! Ruby II is a great option, the room is very nice! I won’t recommend to take the train from Cairo to Aswan, service is great but services are not good (very old and dirty), washrooms very dirty!

Best time to visit egypt.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius - perfect for snorkelling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo. 

Choose to escape the crowds by travelling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating on reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humour to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Foods to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chilli paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the north-east corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterised by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defence. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighbouring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognise Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians and travellers are all amazed by this civilisation which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting of crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you. 

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artefacts and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewellery, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. 

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple, and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customise them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

Is tipping customary in Egypt?

Tipping is customary for pretty much all services in Egypt. A tip of 10–15% is customary at cafes and restaurants and loose change is acceptable for food purchases from street vendors and markets. It’s also a good idea to tip local guides and drivers AUD$4–5 per day.

What is the internet access like in Egypt?

Internet access is growing in Egypt, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hotspots becoming increasingly common in large cities, especially Cairo, though access may be limited in smaller town and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone in Egypt?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Egypt’s urban areas, but may not be available in remote and desert areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Egypt?

Squat toilets are most common in Egypt, although Western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas.

Can I drink the water in Egypt?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Egypt. Remember to avoid drinks with ice and to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Ask your leader or hotel where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Egypt?

Credit cards are usually accepted by modern hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors in remote areas. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Egypt?

ATMs are commonly found in larger cities, like Cairo and Alexandria, near shopping centres, tourist areas and 5-star hotels, but are far less common in small towns and rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Is Egypt a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI-travellers in Egypt. Though homosexuality is not officially outlawed, gay men have been prosecuted using debauchery and public morals laws and given long prison sentences. Be aware that signals are ambiguous in Egypt as men commonly hold hands, link arms and greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. As long as you use common sense, travel in Egypt should not be a problem.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re travelling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-coloured clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.
