Though rightly famed for its golden beaches and picturesque cities, Portugal is less well known for its hiking paths. This is good news for those in search of incredible trails without the crowds to match.

This Iberian nation is packed with countless scenic routes, from clifftop journeys overlooking the crashing waves to craggy mountain trails in well-preserved parks and nature preserves. Hiking here is not only about enjoying panoramic views and spotting wildlife; stepping onto the trail can also take you back in time to traditional stone villages and along ancient routes once used by the Romans.

In general, the best time to hike is in the spring and fall, although if you’re heading south, the winter doesn’t disappoint. You’ll have cool but mostly pleasant days and enjoy a welcome lack of crowds wherever you go. Here are seven of our favorite hikes in Portugal.

A sign points in the direction of Fóia, the highest point of the Algarve in Portugal. A hiker stands on top of the peak in the background.

1. Via Algarviana

Best long-distance hike in the southern interior 300km (186 miles), 2–3 weeks, moderate

If you’ve had enough of lounging on one of the Algarve’s postcard-pretty beaches , a hike along part – or, if you’re really brave, all – of the 300km-long Via Algarviana is the best way to appreciate the magnificent landscapes of this region.

The trail stretches from Alcoutim in the northeast to the Cabo de São Vicente in the southwest. Some of the most beautiful sections are around Monchique , where splendid vistas open up as you climb through cork groves to the Algarve 's highest peaks.

For a two-day taster of the trail, stay in Monchique, walk up to Picota and back one day, and up to Fóia and back the next. Avoid high summer, when temperatures can be extreme and wildfires can pose a hazard.

2. Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

Best walk along sea cliffs   5.7km (3.5 miles) one-way, 2–3 hours, moderate

The central coast of the Algarve is the starting point for one of the loveliest seaside walks in the Iberian peninsula. Multicolored rock formations, the scent of the salt-tinged air, and the sound of crashing waves all set the stage for an immersive hike along coastal cliffs.

The light is most impressive in the early morning or late in the day, but in truth, there’s no bad time to go. Even if you go in the heat of the day, you can cool off at beaches along the way (or wait until lovely Praia da Marinha at the end of the trail).

Don’t miss key photo opportunities, like the Alfanzina lighthouse or the wind-carved arches jutting into the ocean at Praia da Mesquita. The walk also passes over the Benagil Caves , but if you want to see the spectacular interior, head down to Praia de Benagil, where you can arrange a boat trip.

The village of Piódão in Portugal. The rural mountain village is built on a steep slope, and consists of a number of traditional stone houses.

3. Piódão to Foz d’Égua Loop

Best village-to-village walk 6.8km (4.2 miles), round-trip, 2 hours, moderate

A trip to the tiny village of Piódão takes you deep into the Serra de Açor (Goshawk Mountains), a remote range of vertiginous ridges, deeply cut valleys, rivers, and virgin woodland. The village itself is extremely atmospheric, set among steeply terraced slopes with its grey schist houses clinging to the verdant hills, but it can get busy with tourists.

To escape the crowds and enjoy the serenity of this magnificent region, take the short signposted trail to the nearby village of Foz d’Égua, home to some lovely old stone bridges, schist houses, and a precarious-looking footbridge over the river gorge. You can loop back on a different path with magnificent views over the verdant landscape.

4. Paiva Walkways

Best river walk    8km (5 miles) one-way, 3 hours, moderate

Hidden in northern Portugal’s Aveiro region is one of the country's best inland walks. The Passadiços do Paiva take you along a series of staircases and walkways that cling to the hillsides overlooking the gurgling Paiva River.

Enjoy beautiful views over a rugged valley and plenty of opportunities to cool off, with three river beaches along the way. At the journey’s end (or beginning), you can make an optional visit to Ponte 516 Arouca, the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge .

Preparation is essential for this walk. It's located in the Arouca Geopark , and you must have a (very reasonably priced) ticket to go on the walk. It’s easiest and cheapest to book this online . You’ll also need your own vehicle to reach the trailhead since there are no buses here, as well as a firm idea of your itinerary.

You can start in either Areinho or Espiunca and take a taxi back to your starting point at the end. If you’re only planning to go one way, however, it’s less strenuous to begin in Areinho. If you’re planning to do a roundtrip hike, then you should start in Espiunca and get the harder bits out of the way first.

5. Via Geira Roman Road

Best historical trail  4.3km (2.7 miles), one-way, 1–2 hours, easy

One of Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês ' unforgettable hiking experiences is the Via Geira, an ancient Roman road that once stretched nearly 322km (200 miles) between Braga and Astorga (Spain) and now has World Heritage status. The most beautiful stretch begins at Portela do Homem, where the Roman milepost XXXIV still stands.

From the milepost, you can walk southwest, following the Rio Homem downhill through the beautiful Mata de Albergaria forest. This entire stretch is littered with Roman trail markers – some inscribed with the name of the emperor during whose rule they were erected.

6. Rocha da Pena circuit

Best off-the-beaten-path hike   6.6km (4.1 miles) round-trip, 2–3 hours, moderate

The Serra do Caldeirão's most worthwhile short walk is climbing this limestone escarpment via a well-signposted circuit. The area has 450 different plant species, including native daffodils and bee orchids. Among the birdlife you might see are the short-toed snake-eagle, Iberian green woodpecker, and Egyptian vulture.

Don’t miss the optional detour up to Talefe, the highest point in the Rocha da Pena at 479m (1571ft), with mesmerizing views over the Algarve’s hinterlands.

Museums in Salir , Alte, and Querença stock a basic map guide. Carry water and snacks (the only refreshment stops are small shops/cafes at the base and in Pena village) and heed seasonal forest fire warnings. The Rocha da Pena is also popular with rock climbers.

7. Rota Vicentina

Best coastal walk in Portugal Fishermen’s Trail 226km (141 miles), Historical Way 263km (163 miles), 14 days each trail, moderate

The Rota Vicentina comprises two walking trails – one coastal and one inland – and runs along the southwest coast to Cabo de São Vincente . The coastal walk (better known as the Fishermen’s Trail) uses paths forged by beachgoers and fisherfolk and passes through some of Portugal’s most dramatic coastal scenery.

The inland route (the Historical Way) is equally appealing. It passes through rural villages, cork-tree forests, and river valleys, with a scenic coastal section anchoring the southern end of the trail.

Both trails are made up of sections, and it’s rarely more than 25km (15.5 miles) between villages, where you can lodge for the night (thus, no need to bring camping gear). The Fishermen’s Trail has 13 sections, totaling 226km (141 miles), and the walk is slightly more difficult with some passages on dunes and thigh-burning sands.

At times it runs along the cliffs, mostly single track, and only walkers are allowed. The longer Historical Way has 13 sections totaling 263km (163 miles). Trails are wider, and the walk is generally easier; mountain bikes are permitted.

Best hikes in Portugal

The Algarve Walking in the Algarve  offers something for everyone. Inland, trails wind through rolling hills and pretty villages while the flatter eastern coastline is in stark contrast to the more dramatic, wilder west coast. Little known by tourists, the Via Algarviana stretches some 300km in the easternmost part and is characterised by traditional agricultural villages and farmland – a different Algarve altogether from the beautifully-preserved coastal Rota Vicentina path. The Azores The unspoiled archipelago of the Azores is characterised by volcanic landscapes, lush vegetation and charming fishing villages. Walk around a volcanic crater on Sao Miguel Island, explore the vineyards of Pico or spot whales and dolphins off the coast on our  Azores Island Hopping  trip. Madeira This lush volcanic island  is known for its year-round climate, making it ideal for a walking break throughout the year. Discover the island’s levadas (a network of narrow irrigation channels) and coastal paths that overlook the dramatic Atlantic coastline.

What to expect on a walking tour in Portugal

portugal walking trips

When is the best time to go walking in Portugal? The best times of year to visit Portugal are in spring and autumn, and this is particularly true for walking vacations. The climate is pleasantly warm outside of summer and so more comfortable for walking and exploring. There’ll still be plenty of sunshine, and you can swim in the still-warm sea, while the cooling Atlantic breezes mean it’s not too hot - perfect for hiking.

How challenging are walking vacations in Portugal? Our walking tours in Portugal are graded from easy through to moderate, and walks vary from three to six hours in a day. Landscapes and terrains are varied, from cobbled streets to ancient woodlands and coastal paths. Our small group trips all stop and regroup regularly, with plenty of rest breaks to take in the views along the way.

What will I eat on a Portugal hiking tour?  Portugal is well known for its delicious cuisine. Dishes are typically hearty - ideal for fuelling a walking tour - and packed with fresh local ingredients. Food varies between different regions. In southern Portugal try  cataplana , a flavoursome seafood stew cooked in a clam-shaped copper pot.  The Azores  are known for their seafood, particularly tuna, and traditional  cozido  (slow-cooked Portuguese hot pot), cooked in the volcanic fumeroles. In Lisbon, the custard tarts are a must. Throughout Portugal you'll find delicious wines, while in  Madeira  poncha  is the cocktail to order, made from distilled sugar cane juice.

Where will I be staying on my Portugal walking tour? Our small group tours to Portugal stay in small comfortable hotels. Wherever possible we stay in locally-owned and run hotels, and always choose the best locations for exploring the area. On our  Azores walking tour , accommodation on Horta Island is premium standard as is the centre-based accommodation on our  Eastern Algarve trip . Elsewhere, accommodation is a comfortable standard throughout.

Approximately 2-hour trail where you can enjoy the fantastic views over the Douro river valley in the Pinhão area. Those more connected to cameras may need a little more hehe. In this walking tour, I'd also highlight the typical gastronomy of the region with which we were presented at the end of the hike and the visit to one of Sandeman's emblematic farms, Quinta do Seixo. Many thanks to our guide Daniel, who in an enthusiastic and fun way transmitted us the local culture and provided a fantastic day among friends and family.

Amazing sights, good food, and great company

So glad we picked them to guide us on our family’s first walking tour in Portugal. Daniel was not only a foodie like us, it was like having a friend hike with us and help us get acquainted with the Portuguese culture and people. His easygoing nature and knowledge of the hikes made it so enjoyable, from the picnic with wine, sausages and bread to the delicious dinner at a winery. If you want a more intimate hiking experience without the quirks of too many strangers, I highly recommend them for a hiking tour!

Portugal Coastal Hiking Tour

Portugal Coastal Hiking Tour

  • What's Included
  • Delicious Meals
  • Great Hotels

Set out on an incredible 6 days of hiking along Portugal’s sun-drenched southwestern Atlantic coast.

From the rich culture of Lisbon to the sparkling white villages of Algarve, take a turn through one of the best preserved coastlines in all of Europe. Hike to quaint towns, rocky seascapes and unspoiled beaches along our journey. Beginning near Lisbon in romantic Sintra, where forested hillsides give way to white sandy beaches, we hike by centuries-old castles and palaces. The scenery can only be described as absolutely quintessential.  Savor the fresh, salty air and indulge in traditional southern European cuisine. Tour through inviting plazas and savor quiet conversation in a charming café. Explore jumbled rocks along vast stretches of shoreline. We find the end of our route in Sagres. This bluff, once thought to be the end of the world, is where ships departed from the sailing school of Prince Henry the Navigator in a quest to discover far-off lands. Take in the beauty of the shoreline before we ourselves depart home.

Trip Highlights

  • From Sintra to Sagres, discover Europe’s best preserved coastline.
  • Hike the finest sections of famed Rota Vicentina—the Fisherman’s Trail.
  • Absorb Portugal’s heritage visiting historic sites built by conquerors and kings.
  • Delight in fresh local cuisine—seafood, homemade cheese and Alentejo wines.

Activities – Hiking

This trip can be rated Easy Active [2] by doing the standard walks or Moderate [3] by continuing and doing the optional parts of the hikes as well.

Easy Active [2]. Trip members should be capable of walking up to 3 hours (up to 4 miles) on consecutive days. Hikes may include trails with some loose dirt, rocks, sand and stone stairs of variable height, and sections with some ascents and descents. Elevation gain/loss is minimal on this trip.

Moderate [3]. The first three days are a mix of culture and hiking; the last three days are dedicated to hiking and exploring nature. Days are full and you should anticipate rising early and retiring for the evening after 9pm. The daily hikes range from 2.5–10 miles (4–6 hours). The terrain will vary and includes forested trails, grassy lanes, dirt pathways and sandy beaches. It is important to note there will be uneven, rocky, steep and/or hilly sections, and some trail sections have areas of exposure. Hiking in sand is more strenuous than hiking on dirt trails; likewise hiking in very warm weather can make the hills feel more strenuous. The better shape you are in, the more you’ll be able to enjoy all that ruggedly beautiful Portuguese Coast has to offer!

Hike to Guincho beach and the Cresmina Dunes from Peninha Sanctuary.

Our trip begins in Lisbon, Portugal with a 9am group rendezvous.  A short drive brings us to the dramatic Peninha Sanctuary. According to local legend, the 17th-century chapel was built after the Virgin Mary appeared to a hermit. We begin our hike here or in the village of Biscaia, heading downhill on trails to Guincho beach and then onwards to Cresmina Dunes Nature Center for lunch. The views, not the exertion, will render us breathless! Our next stop is Cascais to check into our hotel and freshen up before dinner. Lunch and dinner included.

Hiking: 6 miles; terrain: some rocky sections. Driving: 1h15 min

Hike to Cabo da Roca, stroll the streets of Cascais.

At Praia Grande Beach we hike on trails hidden among the coastal flora to Cabo da Roca, the western-most point of continental Europe. From the windswept landscape of this historic Cape we marvel at views of the wild Atlantic and local fisherman perched on the cliffs ready to hook their day’s catch. After lunching on local specialties in Azoia we head to the quiet and green of Capuchos Convent nestled in the forest. Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a wide diversity of landscapes including mountains, forests, lakes, sand dunes, and a rugged coastline with high cliffs interspersed between lovely beaches. Transferring to the seaside village of Cascais, we’ll check in to our hotel in the 15th c. citadel overlooking the bay, the lighthouse and the old town. Breakfast and lunch included. Dinner on your own.

Hiking: 5 miles; Terrain: some steep, rocky sections on ascents and descents; City walk: 1 mile; Driving: 1h25 min

Visit an Azulejo tile workshop, then hike along Rota Moinhos for panoramic views.

We stretch our legs with a boardwalk stroll from Cascais to Estoril before transferring south of Lisbon over the Tejo River. We visit a tile workshop to discover the five-centuries-old tradition of Azujelo painted ceramic tile work; these decorative tiles are found everywhere from churches and palaces to ordinary homes and railway stations. There is free time for lunch in town before beginning our hike along a portion of the Rota Moinhos (“Windmills Path”) in the Arrábida Natural Park. The trail, named for the traditional windmills along the path, offers panoramic views of the region’s mountain ranges, Palmela Castle and the Tejo River estuary. Tonight we stay in the whitewashed village of Vila Nova de Milfontes, at the Mira River estuary and dine at a favorite restaurant. Breakfast and dinner included.

Hiking: 2.4 miles; Terrain: mostly rolling with an initial steep ascent; Driving: 3.5 hours

The famous Rota Vicentina leads us to the coastal village of Almograve.

We begin with a short crossing of the Mira River in a traditional Moliceiro boat. We hike from Praia das Furnas to Almograve, a quiet coastal village blessed with two distinctive beaches. The northern Almograve beach is spread over gentle sand dunes, while the southern beach has dramatic black shale rocks jutting from the steep cliffs. We enjoy a picnic lunch that includes famous local cheeses. This afternoon, trip members can choose to transfer to our lodgings or opt to continue hiking. The optional hike brings us to Cabo Sardão, where storks nest on the cliffs above the Atlantic. Overnight for the second night in Vila Nova de Milifontes. Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner on your own.

Hiking: 6 miles; Terrain: mostly flat trails with some steeper up-and-down sections; Optional hike: 5 miles; Terrain: sandy trails

Hike to Ponta em Branco for stunning views of Odeceixe beach.

We continue our hike on coastal trails with sea breezes and sweeping views of the rugged coast. The jumbled geology of the sedimentary rock along this stretch of shoreline is evidence of the force of nature here. We are rewarded with an exceptional view of Odeceixe beach from Ponta em Branco (White summit). Hiking down to Odeceixe beach on the Seixe river delta, we take time to stroll the soft sands before heading to Sagres, on the southern Algarve coast where Henry the Navigator, a famed figure during the Age of Discoveries, walked along the cliffs in the 15th century and built a church and his home. Guests choosing to opt out part of today’s hike will enjoy the countryside views of Alentejo, with free time to explore the fishing village where we stop for lunch before transferring to Sagres. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Hiking: 8.5 miles; Terrain: sections of hard packed dirt trail and sandy trails; Driving: 1.5 hours

Our final hike along golden sand beaches and clifftops ends in Zavial.

Hiking : 5.6 miles; Terrain : hard-packed dirt trails and sandy beach sections.

From the rugged Algarve coast we return to Lisbon to say our goodbyes.

Our journey along Portugal’s wild Atlantic Coast comes to an end. Continue exploring the famed Algarve coast on your own, or transfer back to Lisbon with the guides for arrival at around 7pm. We provide a drop-off at the Lisbon airport and Lisboa Plaza hotel.

Driving: 3 hours

Although we do our very best to adhere to the schedule above, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions.

The best times of year to visit Portugal are in spring and autumn, and this is particularly true for walking holidays. The climate is pleasantly warm outside of summer and so more comfortable for walking and exploring. There’ll still be plenty of sunshine, and you can swim in the still-warm sea, while the cooling Atlantic breezes mean it’s not too hot - perfect for hiking.

How challenging are walking holidays in Portugal? Our walking holidays in Portugal are graded from easy through to moderate, and walks vary from three to six hours in a day. Landscapes and terrains are varied, from cobbled streets to ancient woodlands and coastal paths. Our small group trips all stop and regroup regularly, with plenty of rest breaks to take in the views along the way.

What will I eat on a Portugal walking holiday?  Portugal is well known for its delicious cuisine. Dishes are typically hearty - ideal for fuelling a walking holiday - and packed with fresh local ingredients.

Where will I be staying on my Portugal walking holiday? Our small group tours to Portugal stay in small comfortable hotels. Wherever possible we stay in locally-owned and run hotels, and always choose the best locations for exploring the area. On our  Azores walking holiday , accommodation on Horta Island is premium standard as is the centre-based accommodation on our  Eastern Algarve trip . Elsewhere, accommodation is a comfortable standard throughout.
