Egypt Visa on Arrival

Egypt Visa on Arrival

Travellers can queue and pay for a visa on arrival in Egypt. Visa on arrival facilities have been available at Egyptian ports of entry for many years.

The alternative to the visa on arrival is the Egypt e-Visa . The modern online system was introduced in 2017 to streamline the visa application process.

If you’re unsure whether to apply for an Egyptian visa online or on arrival, you can use the information on this page to make an informed decision.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Eligible travellers can obtain an Egyptian tourist visa on arrival at immigration kiosks at any of the airport terminals .

If you have not applied for a visa in advance need to:

  • Wait in line at the visa on arrival window
  • Fill out the visa application form and provide documents
  • Pay the visa on arrival fee in cash
  • Attach the Egypt visa sticker to the passport

The visa on arrival must be paid for in one of the 3 accepted currencies (USD, EUR, or GBP) . Card payment is not accepted. You should aim to have the exact amount ready to pay for the Egypt visa .

If you wish to pay for your visa by card, you need to apply online. All major credit and debit cards are accepted.

You can stay in the country for up to 30 days with an Egyptian visa on arrival .

Which countries can get a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Nationals of several countries are eligible to request a visa on arrival in Egypt.

Citizens of some countries are only eligible if they already have a valid visa issued by one of the following countries:

  • New Zealand
  • Any Schengen Area country

If you can apply for the Egyptian e-Visa, then you are also eligible for a visa on arrival. However, you can save time on arrival at the airport by arranging the visa in advance.

Where can you get an Egypt visa on arrival?

You can apply for an Egyptian visa on arrival at border control when arriving in Egypt .

It is currently not advised that travelers cross land borders or checkpoints, as there is not always up-to-date information concerning which checkpoints and border crossings are open or issue a visa on arrival.

International checkpoints where you can get a visa on arrival for Egypt:

  • Cairo International Airport, Cairo
  • Hurghada International Airport, Hurghada
  • St Catherine International Airport, St Catherina
  • Borg El Arab International Airport, Alexandria
  • Sharm El Sheikh International Airport
  • Luxor Airport International Airport

Israeli citizens can now obtain a visa on arrival for South Sinai if they arrange their trip through approved travel agencies.

While visas on arrival are generally only issued at the above airports, the e-Visa for Egypt is accepted at air, land, and sea borders . Passengers with an e-Visa can head straight to border control at the airport.

Can I get a visa on arrival at any Egyptian border?

The visa on arrival is only available at the international airports in Egypt listed above. If you plan to enter Egypt by land, you will need to obtain a visa before traveling .

It's important to check the specific visa requirements for your country of origin and make sure you have all the necessary documents before traveling to Egypt by land. Note that not all border crossings allow entry for foreign tourists , so it's important to check the regulations and restrictions at land borders before traveling.

How much does a visa on arrival in Egypt cost?

You have to pay the visa on arrival fee in cash—British pounds, US dollars, and Euros are accepted. To avoid delays, you should have the exact amount on arrival at the border .

Following the visa requirements and providing the right information will help you to obtain your visa on arrival. However, presenting a valid passport and paying the visa fee is no guarantee of entry .

Difference between Egypt e-Visa and Visa On Arrival

The main difference between the tourist visa on arrival and the electronic visa is that e-Visa applicants obtain the permit online , in advance. If you opt for the visa on arrival, you have to wait until you arrive in Egypt to apply.

For greater peace of mind, many tourists prefer to arrange their visa before travelling. You are not guaranteed a visa on arrival at the border.

The e-Visa is also a convenient choice given that you can complete and submit the application from home , rather than at the airport.

Both the e-Visa and the visa on arrival allow you to stay in Egypt for up to 30 days . Single and multiple-entry online visas are available.

One other difference is that, as mentioned above, you must pay the visa on arrival fee in cash. Electronic visa applicants pay securely online by card.

Egypt e-Visa, the convenient tourism alternative to the visa on arrival

There a few basic visa requirements that you must meet to obtain an Egypt e-Visa . Firstly, you must be from one of the eligible countries, such as United Kingdom , Australia , Canada , the United States , and many European nations.

Secondly, it is necessary to have the following :

  • A passport with 6 months remaining from the date of entry
  • A credit or debit card to pay the e-Visa fee
  • An up-to-date email address to receive the electronic visa

The application form involves entering some basic personal information (such as your name, address, date of birth, and passport details), and answering some simple security-related questions. The process is safe and information is encrypted and secure.

It only takes a few minutes to complete the application form. After the application has been processed, the visa is sent to you by email. You should print a copy of the visa to present at Egyptian border control .

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Passport and Visas:

  • U.S. citizens must have a visa to enter Egypt.
  • U.S. citizens can obtain a renewable single-entry 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Egyptian airports for a 25 USD fee. A multiple entry visa is also obtainable for 60 USD.
  • The Government of Egypt has created a website for the issuance of “ e-visas .” There are other websites purporting to offer electronic visas, some of which reportedly charge double the official price, but this is the only official Government of Egypt portal for this service. U.S. citizens and the citizens of 44 other countries are eligible to apply through this means in advance of their travel.
  • Egyptian immigration officials occasionally have denied entry to travelers without explanation.
  • U.S. citizens who have experienced difficulty with their visa status in Egypt or are concerned about their eligibility for a visa upon arrival should apply for a visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate prior to travel, but a visa obtained prior to entry does not guarantee admission to Egypt.
  • Visas for gainful employment or study in Egypt must be obtained prior to travel.

Entry from Israel:

  • U.S. citizens arriving from Israel at the Taba border crossing should obtain a visa ahead of time.
  • If travelers do not obtain a visa prior to arrival, they may either apply for a no-fee, 14-day visa that is only valid for travel within the Sinai Peninsula, or they may obtain a 30-day tourist visa valid for travel throughout Egypt for 25 USD.
  • The 30-day visa requires the submission of a travel agency support letter that may be obtained from travel agents at the border; their fees for providing this service vary.
  • The Government of Egypt opens this border on an infrequent and unpredictable basis.
  • Travel groups and/or humanitarian aid convoys that wish to cross at Rafah would need to contact the  Egyptian Embassy  in Washington for permission prior to travel.
  • The Egyptian government screens travelers before allowing entry/exit through the Rafah border crossing with Gaza.
  • The U.S. government advises its citizens to avoid travel to Gaza; the U.S. Embassy does not issue travel letters or provide any assistance in crossing to and from Gaza.
  • Travelers to Gaza from Egypt should read the  Travel Advisory for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza and are reminded the Sinai Peninsula remains a particularly dangerous area, with frequent Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS) attacks on security forces and civilians.

Diplomatic and Official Passports:

  • Diplomatic and Official passport holders, when entering Egypt for official business, are required to have visas  before arrival in Egypt.
  • Diplomatic or Official passport holders must not use these passports to enter Egypt for unofficial travel, and should use their personal passports, following all appropriate regulations.
  • Travelers attempting to enter Egypt with diplomatic or official passports who do not have visas will be denied entry and required to remain in the airport transit area, at their own expense, until their immediate departure from Egypt can be arranged.
  • The U.S. Embassy in Cairo is unable to intervene in such situations. Military personnel arriving on commercial flights are not exempt from passport and visa requirements.
  • The  Egyptian Embassy  in Washington currently requires at least three weeks, and sometimes much longer, to process official and diplomatic visa requests, an expedite letter from the Department of State notwithstanding.
  • It is incumbent upon all official travelers to submit their visa requests and passports to the Egyptian Embassy well in advance of travel.

Work Permits:

  • U.S. citizens who wish to come to Egypt for work must obtain work permits and work/business visas before arrival.
  • All work permits must be obtained through the employer. These permits may be acquired from the Ministry of Manpower and Migration offices in the district of the employer; accordingly, these permits authorize residency in the country.
  • U.S. citizens who arrive as tourists but want to change their status after arrival in country may acquire a three-month tourist/non-working residency visa to allow sufficient time to change their status from tourist to worker.
  • U.S. citizens in Egypt on tourist visas are not permitted to work.

For additional information on entering Egypt, please contact the nearest  Egyptian Embassy  or Consulate.

Medical Requirements:

  • U.S. citizens arriving from an area that has been infected with yellow fever will need to provide proof of immunizations.
  • Please verify this information with the  Egyptian Embassy  before you travel.

Exit Requirements:

  • U.S. citizen women married to Egyptians do not need their spouse's permission to depart Egypt as long as they have a valid Egyptian visa or valid Egyptian passport.
  • A U.S. citizen departing Egypt with a dual-national child (U.S.-Egyptian) may be required by Egyptian immigration officers at the airport to demonstrate that they have proof of consent of the non-traveling Egyptian parent.
  • If travelers attempt to depart Egypt after the expiration of their visa, they may be required to pay a fine at the airport. Travelers should ensure that they arrive to the airport early with sufficient Egyptian currency to pay any fines.
  • The U.S. Embassy does not issue travel letters to exit Egypt.

Dual Nationals:

  • If a dual national has the annotation “Egyptian origin” on their entry visa, they will require proof of Egyptian citizenship in order to exit Egypt.
  • This is also true for dual nationals who remain in Egypt for more than six months.
  • In some cases, if a dual national loses their U.S. passport, they will be required to present their parents’ Egyptian birth certificates and be documented as Egyptian citizens in order to obtain a temporary/replacement entry stamp to facilitate their travel out of Egypt.
  • Male U.S. citizens who also hold Egyptian nationality, between 18-40 years old, who have stayed in Egypt more than 180 days, are required to finalize their Egyptian military status before departure, or risk being refused departure from Egypt by Egyptian Immigration officials. The U.S. Embassy is unable to intervene in these situations. For more information see: https://tagned.mod.gov.eg/ .

Safety and Security

The Department of State Travel Advisory warns U.S. citizens to avoid travel to the Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) and the Western Desert. Travel to the Libyan and Sudanese borders is also not recommended. U.S. citizens in Egypt should maintain a high level of vigilance throughout the country due to the threat of terrorism.

Between December 2018 and May 2019, terrorist incidents in tourist areas in greater Cairo killed four tourists and wounded at least 18 others. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, and have targeted diplomatic facilities, tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, western businesses, resorts, and local government facilities. There is a possibility of terrorist attacks in urban areas, including in Cairo, despite the heavy security presence. In August 2019, a car bomb explosion outside of a hospital in Cairo killed at least 20. Additionally, terrorists have targeted religious sites, to include mosques, churches, monasteries, and buses traveling to these locations.

The Egyptian government has attempted to address security concerns and has visibly augmented its security presence at tourist locations, but challenges persist, and the threat of terrorism remains. Police and military are also engaged in operations to combat terrorism and disrupt terrorist cells in the Sinai Peninsula and the Nile Valley.

  • The Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) due to terrorism.

The Sinai Peninsula remains a particularly dangerous area, with frequent terrorist attacks on security forces and civilians.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens anywhere in the Sinai Peninsula as U.S. government employees are not authorized to travel to these areas (with the exception of the beach resort of Sharm El-Sheikh; travel to Sharm El-Sheikh is only permitted by air).

  • The Western Desert due to terrorism.
  • Egyptian border areas other than official ports of entry.

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Egypt’s borders are under military control; movement of non-military persons and vehicles is substantially restricted, and in some cases prohibited, within these areas. U.S. citizens should not travel in these border zones.

It is illegal to photograph police stations, military barracks, and certain other sensitive public buildings.

U.S. citizens are urged to remain alert to local security developments, avoid demonstrations, and be vigilant regarding their personal security at all times throughout the country. U.S. citizens should also carry identification and a cell phone or other means of communication that works in Egypt, and it is advisable to pre-program the U.S. Embassy’s telephone number (+20 2 2797-3300) and email address ( [email protected] ) into the device.

Travelers must obtain permission and a travel route from the Egyptian Military Intelligence and the Tourist Police Headquarters via a local or overseas travel agency to access Egypt's frontiers, including the borders with Libya, Sudan, Israel, and parts of the Sinai Peninsula off paved roads.

High concentrations of World War II-era unexploded landmines are located in the World War II battlefields along the Mediterranean coast west of Alexandria, the Eastern Desert between Cairo and the Suez Canal, and much of the Sinai Peninsula. Travelers are urged to be especially cautious in these areas.

Crime:  Crime levels in Cairo and Alexandria are moderate.

The vast majority of criminal acts against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, such as purse snatching and pickpocketing.

Harassment of women, including foreigners, remains a serious problem. Incidents of harassment range from lewd comments and gestures to indecent exposure and inappropriate physical contact.

Tourists should be alert to being overcharged for various services and for being victimized in scams common to tourist destinations worldwide. Tourists should expect to encounter aggressive vendors at Egypt’s shops in urban areas, as well as at the many temples and archaeological sites. Some will offer “free” gifts to tourists which, once accepted, lead to demands for money. Most sites have specially designated tourist police who can assist in uncomfortable situations.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Egypt. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers

The U.S. Embassy receives frequent reports of online financial scams, often involving a fraudulent romantic partner requesting money for hospital bills or legal expenses to depart Egypt. Be skeptical about sending money to anyone known only through online contact.

Victims of Crime:

U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Report crimes to the local police at 122 and contact the U.S. Embassy at +(20) 2-2797-3300. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime. The Embassy cannot intervene in legal disputes.

Failure to report crimes before leaving Egypt will make it impossible to seek prosecution at a later date. U.S. citizen tourists can forward their complaints for investigation to the Tourist Police Headquarters. For crimes involving children, you may call Egypt’s Child Emergency Help line by dialing 16000 . Egypt’s National Council for Women provides some assistance to women who are victims of domestic violence, or other complaints, at phone number 15115 or website: http://www.oo-ncw.org .

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and adventure facilities may not frequently occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are not always able to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: Travelers are subject to local laws. The Egyptian legal system is different from the legal system in the United States, with significantly different standards of evidence, due process, and rule of law. Travelers should be conscious of their behavior and how it may be interpreted by Egyptian authorities. If one  violate local laws, even unknowingly, one may be denied entry, expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Egyptian police and security forces do not require probable cause in order to stop, question, and detain individuals. Failure to carry proper identification, such as a passport, may result in detention and questioning.
  • Suspects may be detained without charges or access to immediate legal counsel for months during the investigative stage of a criminal case.
  • U.S. citizens have been detained for several days or more in non-criminal cases, including immigration violations.
  • Local laws prohibit protesting or demonstrating without a permit. Even being in the vicinity of anti-government protests can draw scrutiny from Egyptian police or security forces, including demands to search personal electronic devices. U.S. citizens have been detained for posting content on social media perceived as critical of Egypt or its allies.
  • Punishments often can be harsher in Egypt for comparable crimes than they are in the United States. Penalties for drug offenses can be particularly severe, including life in prison or the death penalty.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Dual U.S.-Egyptian Citizens : Egyptian law considers dual nationals to be Egyptian citizens and thus the Egyptian authorities do not automatically notify the U.S. Embassy when a dual national is detained, or provide information about their alleged crime. Family members, friends, and/or traveling companions may notify the ACS Unit at U.S. Embassy Cairo if the arrested U.S. citizen is unable to do so. U.S. citizenship does not provide protection from detention or arrest by Egyptian authorities and individuals detained may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention.  U.S. citizens arrested for any reason in Egypt may be deported, even if they are not convicted of a crime.  Detained U.S.-Egyptian citizens have been asked by the Government of Egypt to renounce their Egyptian citizenship as a condition of their deportation to the United States.

Consular officers must obtain authorization from Egyptian authorities to visit American detainees.

  • Entering or exiting Egypt with more than $10,000 is prohibited. Attempting to enter or depart Egypt with any instruments of currency in the sum of more than $10,000 could result in the confiscation of the money over $10,000 and other penalties.

Importation of all types of drones, including small civilian drones used for personal or touristic purposes is strictly prohibited. Potential penalties for violating are harsh, and a recently passed law authorizes the death penalty for using a drone in support of terrorist activity.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Cultural Property:  Travelers should note that Egyptian law prohibits the unauthorized removal of antiquities (including historic coins, ceramics, and architectural elements) both from archaeological sites and other sources in Egypt. Egyptian law also forbids the intentional damaging of antiquities, such as inscribing or painting on them or attaching advertisements. The trade, sale, or export in antiquities is also heavily restricted and regulated. Travelers may be prosecuted if found to be looting or damaging archaeological sites, buying antiquities, or smuggling antiquities out of Egypt. Penalties include fines and/or imprisonment.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See the  Department of State’s International Religious Freedom Report .

LGBTI Travelers: LGBTI individuals face significant social stigma and discrimination in Egypt. Egyptian law does not criminalize same-sex sexual activity, but LGBTI persons and advocacy groups have reported harassment, intimidation, arrests, and other forms of abuse, including by police. There are also reports that authorities have used social media, dating websites, and cell phone apps to entrap persons suspected of being gay or transgender in an act of “debauchery,” which is a criminal offense that carries sentences of up to 10 years. Police have confiscated rainbow flags and sometimes detained their owners. See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and sections 1c and 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

ACCESSIBILITY:  While in Egypt, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from in the United States. Businesses and institutions in Egypt generally do not make special accommodations for persons with disabilities, and Egyptian authorities do not enforce laws mandating access to transportation, communication, and public buildings by persons with disabilities. Pedestrian sidewalks and walkways are limited, uneven, high, and sometimes used by cars and motorcycles.

Accommodations on public transportation are not offered for elderly individuals or persons with disabilities. Crosswalks are not in widespread use and motorists have the right of way. Pedestrians should exercise extreme caution.

Students:  See the  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  Many women travel safely each year without incident. However, when it comes to health and security, women travelers are more likely to be affected by religious and cultural beliefs of the foreign countries they visit. The truth is that women face greater obstacles, especially when travelling alone.

Women, especially those traveling alone, should exercise particular care in crowds, on public transportation, in rural areas, and in isolated sections of temple and pyramid complexes. Women have been groped in taxis and while in public places.

The Embassy continues to receive reports of U.S. citizen women subject to domestic violence, sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and rape in Egypt.

Some Egyptian NGOs provide assistance to victimized women within the Egyptian community. Women victimized overseas may be entitled to receive compensation for counseling and/or other services such as relocating back to the United States.

For further information see the travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Egypt, dial 123 .

Ambulance services are not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.

Insurance:  Travelers should make sure their health insurance plan covers them when outside of the United States.

  • The U.S Embassy cannot pay medical bills.
  • U.S. Medicare does not pay overseas.
  • Doctors and hospitals often expect cash payment for health services.
  • The U.S. Embassy strongly recommends  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation, since medical transport out of the country can be prohibitively expensive or logistically impossible.
  • See the webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Medical Care:

Emergency and intensive care facilities are limited. Most Nile cruise boats do not have a ship's doctor, but some employ a medical practitioner. Hospital facilities in Luxor, Aswan, and Sharm el Sheikh are adequate, but they are inadequate at most other ports-of-call. The Egyptian ambulance service hotline is 123. Although availability of ambulances is improving, getting them through Cairo traffic can be very challenging.

Beaches on the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts are generally unpolluted. However, persons who swim in the Nile or its canals, walk barefoot in stagnant water, or drink untreated water are at risk of exposure to bacterial and other infections and the parasitic disease schistosomiasis (bilharzia).

It is generally safe to eat freshly prepared cooked food in hotels, on Nile cruise boats, and in mainstream restaurants. When selecting a restaurant, travelers should select a clean and reputable place, eat only freshly prepared, cooked foods, avoid all uncooked food including raw fruits and vegetables. Tap water in some locations is not potable. It is best to drink bottled water or water that has been boiled and filtered. Well-known brands of bottled beverages are generally considered to be safe if the seal is intact.

Although the Embassy cannot provide medical advice or provide medical services to the public,  a list of hospitals and doctors in Egypt  can be found on the Embassy website.

Prescriptions:  Travelers should carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations:  Travelers should be up-to-date on all recommended  vaccinations , per CDC’s information.

Travel and Transportation

Traffic Laws:  Although the enforcement of traffic laws generally is lax, foreigners are subject to extra scrutiny and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs could result in arrest or detainment.

Road Conditions and Safety:  Driving in Egypt is extremely hazardous. Egypt has one of the highest occurrences of road fatalities per mile driven in the world. Intercity roads are generally in good condition, but unmarked surfaces, pedestrians, stray animals, sandstorms and fog, vehicles without lights, and disabled vehicles without reflectors are among the many hazards present on highways, especially after dark.

Driving Cairo’s busy maze of streets can be an extreme challenge to foreigners, especially those used to a culture of structured rules and regulations. Even residents of Cairo must use extreme care and situational awareness to navigate the capital’s hectic streets. Impatient drivers typically ignore traffic rules, which police seldom enforce. Most traffic lights in Cairo do not function; instead, police officers, using finger and hand movements to direct traffic, normally staff the main intersections.

Vehicle accidents remain a significant safety concern.

Visitors thinking about driving in Egypt should carefully consider other options, such as a taxi or hired driver. If visitors decide to drive, it is essential that they take the utmost precautions and drive defensively. Drivers should be prepared for unlit vehicles at night, few road markings, vehicles traveling at high rates of speed, vehicles traveling the wrong way on one-way streets, divided highways, and connecting ramps, pedestrians dodging in and out of traffic, and domesticated animals on the roadways. Motorists should be especially cautious during the rare winter rains, which can cause extremely slippery road surfaces and localized flooding; Egyptian drivers are not familiar with driving in wet conditions, making such periods particularly hazardous.

Pedestrians should also exercise extreme caution on high-volume/high-velocity streets, like Cairo’s Corniche, which follows the eastern bank of the Nile River, and Alexandria’s Corniche along the Mediterranean.

Public Transportation:  Public buses and microbuses are not safe, and Embassy personnel are prohibited from using them. Embassy personnel are also prohibited from traveling on Cairo’s metro system. Embassy personnel are prohibited from traveling by train, which is a particularly unsafe means of transportation, with regular accidents that sometimes involve mass casualties.

Embassy personnel are generally prohibited from traveling outside the greater Cairo and Alexandria areas by motor vehicle, with the exception of travel to beach resorts on the western side of the Red Sea and near Alexandria. Furthermore, Embassy policy prohibits personal travel via privately-owned vehicle to any part of the Sinai Peninsula or the Western Desert.

Do you need a visa to go to Egypt?

Almost all travelers require a visa to enter Egypt, but fortunately, the process is pretty simple, and a little advance planning goes a long way.

This guide will walk you through the entry requirements for visiting the land of pyramids on a tourist visa.

Who needs a visa to visit Egypt?

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Egypt, but citizens of many countries can apply for an e-Visa in advance or obtain a visa on arrival at Egypt’s international airports. Both cost US$25.

Getting an e-Visa is generally a smoother process than getting a visa at the airport. Apply for a tourist visa online in advance on  the Egyptian Government's official e-Visa website . All you have to do is fill out the online application form and pay.

If you decide to get a visa at the airport when you land in Egypt, be prepared to wait in line – bring your own pen to fill out the paperwork in line or on the plane – and pay in cash (US dollars, euros or British pounds only, not Egyptian pounds).

Citizens of Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macau, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can enter Egypt visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens of Malaysia can enter for up to 14 days.

If you're not eligible to get a visa on arrival or an e-Visa, head to the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your home country and apply in person. The visa process can take several weeks.

How to get an e-Visa for Egypt

To save time, apply for an e-Visa before your trip to Egypt. Citizens of these countries are eligible for Egypt’s e-Visa and can apply on the Egyptian government's official website . Your passport must be valid for at least six months before the date you intend to arrive.

The process is simple: sign up for an account, fill the form and pay the US$25 using a credit or debit card. You’ll receive email notifications as the application is processed.

If you’re issued a visa, you’ll be emailed a link to your e-Visa to download and print the document. When you land in Egypt, present the e-Visa to the Egyptian border patrol with your passport. Have a copy of your accommodation details or tour booking in case you’re asked to show them at the airport.

Egypt’s e-Visa can be single or multiple entry. The single-entry visa allows visitors one entry into the country for stays of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry visa allows travelers to come into  Egypt an unlimited number of times over a period of 180 days and for up to 30 days at a time. Apply for a multi-entry visa at least seven days before your trip.

Visa on arrival in Egypt

If you don’t have time to apply for an e-Visa, you can still get a visa on arrival at the airport if you’re eligible. Visas are available for purchase (US$25) at a kiosk in the arrivals hall before the immigration counters.

Have the correct amount in cash in a major foreign currency (US dollars, euros or British pounds) to avoid delays.

The visa comes in the form of a stamp that you’ll need to put into your passport to present at the immigration counters and passport control.

If you opt for a visa on arrival, you’ll need a passport that’s valid for at least six months from your arrival date, a travel itinerary and documentation to show you've booked accommodations or tours.

Visa on arrival is available at all of Egypt’s international airports. The downsides are that you can be issued a single entry visa only, and the lines at the airport can be long.

You don't need a visa to stay in Sinai on short trips

If you are visiting the resort towns on the Gulf of Aqaba coast and won’t be going to mainland Egypt, you can stay in Sinai for 14 days without buying an Egyptian visa. The Sinai-only visa allows travellers to visit Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab , Nuweiba , Taba and St Catherine, but you cannot go to Ras Muhammad National Park.

The Sinai-only visa is available at the airport in Sharm El Sheikh and the Egypt–Israel border crossing at Taba. If you arrive at Taba and plan to visit mainland Egypt, you must purchase a visa online in advance or at an Egyptian embassy abroad.

Next time we travel to Egypt, we plan on having our visas arranged with iVisa in advance. That way, we know for sure we have the visa in hand before traveling. Whenever you show up to a country expecting a visa on arrival, you are running the risk that you could be denied it.

But if you want to have your Egyptian visa in hand before you travel, click here for iVisa , which arranges Egypt visas for a service fee of $61.99 USD for passport holders from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, etc.

Where to Stay in Cairo – Recommended Cairo Hotels

It is best to have your first few nights in Cairo prebooked, as once you leave the airport, you will see how chaotic Cairo is. We would also highly recommend having your hotel or a driver meet you at the airport.

This will get a trip to Egypt off on the right foot. The traffic in Cairo is insane. You’ll appreciate having something pre-booked with AC. We spent four nights in Cairo on our trip to Egypt. Here are some hotels in Cairo we’d recommend:

  • Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah Check Prices Booking.com
  • Le Meridien Pyramids Hotel and Spa Check Prices Booking.com
  • Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski Check Prices Booking.com

Recommended Cairo Tours and Things To Do In Cairo

If you are planning a visit to the Great Pyramids, you’ll be spending at least a night or two in Cairo. When planning your time in Cairo, don’t try and do too much in one day. The traffic in Cairo is terrible, and you could easily miss something if you don’t allow enough time between tours.

Here are a few recommended tours you can book in advance on Viator.com . I prefer to book a few things in advance. That way, I am not haggling for a fair price, and it’s less local currency to take out of the ATM. This is the best tour we took .

Step-by-step guide to obtaining a visa for Egypt

This article covers basic questions related to obtaining an Egyptian tourist visa, such as the documents required, the validity period, countries that qualify for e-visa, etc.

Step 1: Check If You Need a Visa for Egypt

Travelers from most countries in the world (including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia) must have the correct documentation before arriving in Egypt. Having all your paperwork done properly in advance saves time and unnecessary expenses.

On entering Egypt, the officer at border control will check your passport as well as other travel documents, such as your visa and additional documents demonstrating your purpose of travel and nationality.

More specifically (updated March 30, 2020), passport holders from the following countries and territories may enjoy a visa-free visit to Egypt for up to 90 days:

  • Macao, China
  • Hong Kong, China
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Lebanon — at Sharm el Sheikh International Airport, Hurghada Airport, or Alexandria Borg El Arab Airport (if arriving by a charter flight)
  • Malaysia (up to 14 days)

Passport holders of the following countries may also enjoy a visa-free visit under certain conditions:

  • Afghanistan (provided the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age)

  • Jordan (provided that the traveler holds a normal 5-year passport, and the passport does not contain a stamp on page 60 from the Jordanian Registration Office)
  • Lebanon (for all of Egypt, provided the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age; a visa is not required for Alexandria and South Sinai, for travelers of all ages)
  • Morocco (provided that the traveler is ≤14 years of age)

  • South Sudan (provided that the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age, or is a female national)

  • Palestinian (provided that the travel document has been issued by Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan for a female traveler, or for a male traveler who is ≥40 or ≤18 years of age)
  • Azerbaijan, Barbados, Belize, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Moldova (except female travelers between 15 to 35 years of age), Nicaragua, Russia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Turkey (for those travelling as part of a tourist group that includes at least five citizens of one of the nationalities; all travelers should hold a return ticket and pre-booked accommodation and have a signed guarantee letter from a travel agency in Egypt)
  • Sons and daughters born to an Egyptian father (except nationals of Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Qatar), or to an Egyptian mother if born after July 25, 2004 (except nationals of Syria, Iraq, Qatar, and Yemen), and to wives of Egyptian nationals who hold proof of marriage (except nationals of Syria, Iraq, Morocco, and Qatar)

Passport holders of countries and territories that are not listed are required to obtain an Egypt visa to visit the country.

Step 2: Find Out which Visa You Need

Egypt has introduced an electronic tourist visa, which has a quick and convenient application process. The e-visa can be used over a period of three months (90 days) and for a stay of up to 30 days from the date of arrival.

Passport holders from the following countries and territories may be issued an e-visa (updated March 30, 2020):

Albania, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the Holy See, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the former FYR Macedonia, Malta, the Republic of Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

Visa on Arrival

Citizens of the following countries may obtain a visa on arrival at any of the Egyptian ports of entry (updated March 30, 2020):

Consulate Visa

Visitors who hold passports from countries not eligible for an e-visa or visa on arrival must apply for a visa in person. A visa approval — which takes several weeks to process — may be sought from competent authorities in Egypt.

Step 3. Prepare the Required Documents

  • Completed and signed visa application form with one photograph stapled to the form and one copy of the completed application form with the photograph
  • Two 2x2″ (51x51 mm) recent high-definition passport photographs taken against a white background (the photograph must be no more than six months old)
  • Actual passport (valid for at least six months, with an empty page for the visa) and two copies of the information page
  • Two photocopies of a Green Card (front and back) or valid US visa (for travelers who are residents of the US)
  • Other supporting documents, such as copies of your round-trip tickets and itinerary. If you are a resident alien in the country from which you are traveling, you may need to provide a copy of your residency card.
  • A valid email address (to register and apply for the e-visa)
  • Passport valid for at least six months from date of arrival in Egypt
  • Valid debit or credit card (for payment)
  • Host information (such as hotel or local contact)
  • Travel itinerary (checked on arrival)
  • Hotel bookings / details about places on the itinerary, if traveling as a tourist (checked on arrival)
  • Applicant must be from one of the eligible countries
  • Passport valid for at least six months, with at least two blank pages
  • Payment in cash (USD) only

Step 4. Pay the Fee and Collect your Egyptian Visa

For the e-visa, the fee is paid when you submit your application online. You can simply print it out and present it at the port of entry.

The cost (charged on your card) is USD 25 per person for a single-entry visa (tourist), and USD 60 per person for a multiple-entry visa (tourist). You will obtain your visa in about 2–8 weeks depending on your location and nationality.

For a visa on arrival, the cost is USD 25 (single entry). You may only pay in cash, as credit and debit cards are not accepted at the airport terminal. After making the payment, you will receive a visa sticker which you will need to present at the immigration desk to gain entry to Egypt.

For the consulate visa, the cost for a tourist visa ranges between USD 15–30 depending on your country of origin. Please be aware that most consulates/embassies accept only cash or cashier's checks. It normally takes about 1–8 weeks for the application to be processed, depending on your location and nationality.

When to Apply for Your Egypt Visa

For the e-visa, travelers must create an e-visa application at least seven days prior to departure, according to the Ministry of Interior of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

For the consulate visa, we suggest you submit your application at least six weeks before your departure for Egypt.

A visa on arrival may be applied for at border control prior to queuing up for immigration. Simply bring your documents, tickets, cash, and cards along with you.

Egypt Visa: Everything You Need to Know

Egypt Tor Logo

Egypt is a fascinating country that attracts millions of tourists every year with its ancient pyramids, temples, museums, and natural wonders. If you are planning to visit Egypt, you may need a visa to enter the country, depending on your nationality and purpose of travel. In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about Egypt visa, including the entry requirements, the covid entry requirements, the visa options for Indians, the visa on arrival, the e-visa, and the vfs global services.

Egypt Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for Egypt vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you are applying for. Generally, you will need the following documents to enter Egypt:

  • A valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages.
  • A visa or an entry permission stamp, unless you are exempt from visa requirements.
  • A proof of accommodation or a tour booking, if requested by the immigration officers.
  • A proof of sufficient funds or a return ticket, if requested by the immigration officers.

You can check if you need a visa to enter Egypt by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

Egypt Covid Entry Requirements

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, Egypt has implemented some additional entry requirements for travelers. These include:

  • A negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours before departure. The test result must be in English or Arabic and have a QR code. Children under six years old are exempt from this requirement.
  • A health declaration form filled online at least two days before arrival. You can access the form at the official Egypt Health Entry Portal. You will receive a QR code after submitting the form, which you need to show at the airport.
  • A health insurance that covers covid-19 treatment in Egypt.

These covid entry requirements may change at short notice, so you should check the latest information with your airline or the official Egypt Tourism Authority  before traveling.

Egypt Visa for Indians

Indian citizens who want to visit Egypt for tourism purposes have two options to obtain a visa: online or on arrival. The online option is the Egypt e-Visa, which allows you to apply for a single-entry or a multiple-entry tourist visa in advance. The single-entry e-Visa is valid for 90 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry e-Visa is valid for 180 days and allows multiple stays of up to 30 days each. You can apply for an e-Visa at least seven days before your trip by filling an online application form and paying a fee of 25 USD for a single-entry e-Visa or 60 USD for a multiple-entry e-Visa. You will receive your e-Visa by email and you need to print it out and present it with your passport at the airport.

The on-arrival option is the Egypt Visa on Arrival, which allows you to obtain a single-entry tourist visa at the airport upon arrival. You need to wait in line at the visa on arrival window, fill out an application form, provide your passport and a photo, and pay a fee of 25 USD in cash (preferably in US dollars). You will receive a visa sticker that you need to attach to your passport. The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days.

Egypt Visa on Arrival

The Egypt Visa on Arrival is available for citizens of several countries who are eligible to visit Egypt for tourism purposes. You can check if you are eligible for a visa on arrival by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate. To obtain a visa on arrival, you need to follow these steps:

  • Arrive at one of the international airports in Egypt where the visa on arrival service is available. These include Cairo International Airport, Hurghada International Airport, Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, Luxor International Airport, and Borg El Arab International Airport.
  • Go to the visa on arrival window before reaching the immigration counters.
  • Fill out an application form and provide your passport and a photo.
  • Pay a fee of 25 USD in cash (preferably in US dollars). You should have the exact amount ready to avoid delays.
  • Receive a visa sticker and attach it to your passport.
  • Proceed to the immigration counters and present your passport and visa sticker.

The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days. It is not extendable and it does not allow multiple entries. If you want to avoid the hassle of waiting in line and paying in cash, you can apply for an e-Visa online instead.

Egypt e-Visa

The Egypt e-Visa is an electronic visa that allows you to apply for a tourist visa online before traveling to Egypt. It is a convenient and fast way to obtain a visa without visiting an embassy or consulate or waiting in line at the airport. The e-Visa is available for citizens of 74 countries who are eligible to visit Egypt for tourism purposes. You can check if you are eligible for an e-Visa by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate. To apply for an e-Visa, you need to follow these steps:

  • Create an account on the Egypt e-Visa Portal via the registration page.
  • Confirm your account registration.
  • Log on to the Egypt e-Visa Portal.
  • Select Apply Now.
  • Select the type of visa (single-entry or multiple-entry) and read the instructions carefully.
  • Fill in the application form with your personal, passport, and travel details.
  • Pay the e-Visa fee using a Visa card, MasterCard, or other debit cards. The fee is 25 USD for a single-entry e-Visa or 60 USD for a multiple-entry e-Visa.
  • Receive an email confirmation with your application number.
  • Wait for your e-Visa to be processed. The processing time is usually three business days, but it may take longer depending on the volume of applications and the verification of information.
  • Receive an email notification with your e-Visa status. If your application is approved, you will receive a link to download your e-Visa.
  • Print out your e-Visa and present it with your passport at the airport.

The e-Visa is valid for 90 days for a single-entry visa or 180 days for a multiple-entry visa. It allows a stay of up to 30 days per entry. It is not extendable and it does not allow work or study activities. You should apply for an e-Visa at least seven days before your trip to avoid any delays or problems.

Egypt allows visitors from 78 countries to obtain tourist visa upon arrival

Ahram online , thursday 31 mar 2022.

Egypt will allow visitors from 78 countries around the world to obtain emergency tourist visas upon arrival at Egyptian ports or electronically starting 1 April.

Tourism

This is in addition to offering other special facilitations for a number of additional nationalities in the case of direct arrival to the cities of Sharm El-Sheikh and Taba, provided they have a return ticket, a reservation for their accommodation, a credit card, or enough to cover their stay in Egypt.

Tourist can receive the electronic visa here .

The number of nationalities who are able to receive tourist visas upon arrival in Egypt has now reached more than 180 nationalities, provided that they have a valid and used visa on their passports for the United Kingdom, the US, Japan, New Zealand, or Schengen countries.

The decision comes within the framework of the Egyptian government’s continued efforts to encourage tourists from many different countries to visit Egypt, which relies on tourism revenues as a vital source of foreign currency.

Tourism used to account for up to 15 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) before the pandemic.

Egypt recorded a peak of 13.1 million tourists in 2019, generating $13.03 billion. However, the sector was dealt a huge blow by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the number fell to 3.5 million tourists in 2020.

The sector showed signs of recovery in 2021, however, with 3.5 million tourists visiting Egypt in the first six months of that year, according to official statements.

Egypt hopes it will achieve a full recovery this year.

Officials have expressed concerns regarding a  possible drop in tourism flow  amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which are the main exporters of tourists to Egypt.

In February, the Egyptian government vowed to work on diversifying tourism sources by working to attract more tourists from other countries amid the crisis.

Entry to Egypt: How to Get an Egyptian Visa

Egyptian flag and visa application with passport

Egypt is one of the most epic countries we have ever visited. From the ancient pyramids to the glistening Red Sea, there are thousands of reasons to visit Egypt. The problem for many travelers is that they aren’t sure how to get an Egyptian tourist visa.

While many countries allow visa-free travel for most nationalities, Egypt is one that requires just about every traveler to attain a visa. Without a valid visa, entry into Egypt is impossible for most nationalities, including travelers from the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, most of Europe, and Australia.

This post will lay out everything you need to know about getting an Egyptian tourist visa.

What Is a Visa?

A travel visa is essentially a document permitting you entry into a country. Many countries allow visa-free travel, which enables your valid passport to act as your visa. However, in many cases, you need to take extra steps to secure a visa before you can pass through a country’s immigration enforcement.

Visas come in different forms , and it is important to decide what type of visa you need before you depart on your trip. Visas can be issued for tourism, study, business, and other reasons, and it’s crucial that you get the right type of visa to avoid breaking any immigration laws. If you want to make money while in the country, for example, most countries require you to apply for a business visa instead of a tourist visa.

Ways to Get an Egyptian Tourist Visa

In reality, most travelers to Egypt are tourists. The vast majority of people entering Egypt do so with an Egypt tourist visa. The government of Egypt allows travelers to get a tourist visa in several different ways, depending on their nationality.

The three most common ways to get an Egyptian tourist visa as an American are through your local Egyptian Consulate, upon arrival in Egypt, and online in advance of your trip. There are special rules regarding each one, as well as advantages and drawbacks that may lead you to choose one over another.

Visa on Arrival in Egypt

The first (and best, in my opinion) way to get an Egyptian visa is by completing the Visa on Arrival process. This is exactly what it sounds like; you land in Egypt and follow a few steps to get your visa before passing through the immigration counters.

Visa on Arrival is not available to all nationalities, but it is available to many. Specifically, travelers with passports from the EU, United States, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom are eligible, as well as some other nationalities as long as they have a valid visa to one of those countries.

The Visa on Arrival is only available in major international airports, including Cairo, Sharm el Sheikh, and Hurghada.

If you are entering via a land border or by sea, you should opt for one of the other tourist visa application methods.

There are requirements for the Egyptian Visa on Arrival. In addition to being citizens of eligible countries, foreign nationals must have at least two blank pages left in their passport, have at least 6 months of validity left until it expires, and they might have to prove that they purchased a flight home from Egypt. The Egyptian Visa on Arrival is only a single entry visa, meaning that once you leave Egypt, your visa is no longer valid.

Visa on Arrival at Cairo International Airport

The most common place to get an Egyptian Visa on Arrival is at Cairo International Airport. This is the biggest airport in Egypt, and it is the most common arrival point for U.S. citizens and other travelers from outside of the Middle East. Getting a Visa on Arrival in Cairo can be a bit confusing if you don’t know what you’re doing.

When you land in Cairo, you will follow the signs to the immigration area. Right before the immigration counters, there will be several signs pointing you in the direction of banks. You will need to proceed to any of these bank counters in order to purchase your visa on arrival.

The visa costs $25 US dollars and must be purchased in cash. They might have change for you, but I recommend bringing the exact amount you will need. The attendant will ask to see your passport to check its validity, and if all looks good, he or she will hand you a small visa sticker.

Do not stick this in your passport.

Instead, proceed to the immigration line with your stickers, passports, and the rest of your belongings. The immigration agent will stick the visa in your passport, ensure that you meet the Egypt visa requirements, give a stamp of approval, and send you on your way.

It’s very common for this process to take a little while, as the lines at the banks and the lines for immigration can both get long. It took us about an hour to get from the plane to the baggage claim, and our bags arrived shortly after we got through immigration.

Egyptian E-Visa

The second most common way to get an Egyptian visa is by applying online for the Egypt E-Visa. The Egypt EVisa, or electronic visa , is an online visa that can be purchased from the comfort of your home.

There is only one official place to get the Egyptian E-Visa, and that is from  visa2egypt.gov.eg . This is the official government website that is in charge of managing the online application form and electronic visa service. There are many other agencies that appear to be the official place to apply online, but only this website can be fully trusted.

This is the only website that can be trusted to apply for your online visa. visa2egypt.gov.eg

The application process is very straightforward and clearly laid out on the government website. You need to make an account with your email address, fill out the online application form, select your visa type, submit your payment, and wait for your approval email. It is as simple as that!

The Egyptian E-Visa can be purchased as either a single-entry visa or a multiple-entry visa. Naturally, the cost of the multiple-entry e-visa is higher than the single-entry, with current prices being $60 and $25 respectively. The processing time is usually within 5 business days, and you then have to enter Egypt within 30 days of the visa being issued.

The Egyptian E-Visa is available to travelers from about 80 countries, including Europe, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, most of Latin America, and most of Asia. One notable country that is ineligible for the Egyptian E-visa is Israel. Israeli nationals must obtain a visa from the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

Visa Granted Through an Egyptian Embassy or Consulate

The least common way to get an Egyptian tourist visa is through your local Egyptian consulate or embassy. These places are the international offices of the Egyptian government, and they have the power to grant all types of visas to travelers. Historically, the only way to get a visa was by visiting an embassy or consulate, but that has changed with modern technology.

There are 5 locations in the U.S. where you can apply for an Egyptian tourist visa. The Egyptian Embassy is in Washington D.C., and there are consulates in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston.

Disadvantages of Applying for an Egyptian Visa at the Consulate

There are some major advantages to applying for a visa through a consulate or embassy, but there are just as many drawbacks. First and foremost, it is tedious and time-consuming. The embassy visa process requires many more documents, much more correspondence, longer waiting periods, a higher service fee, and potentially even mailing important documents around.

Beyond that, many people don’t live within a short drive of a consulate, which means applying can be a real task. Since applicants may have to appear at the consulate in person depending on the country, an added challenge is gathering up all the family members for a trip to whatever city houses the consulate. Put briefly, it’s a major hassle.

Reasons to Apply for an Egyptian Visa at the Consulate

With that being said, sometimes it is the best or only option. Citizens of certain countries, like Israel, can only obtain an Egyptian tourist visa from the embassy or consulate. Additionally, any type of visa other than a tourist visa must be issued by a consulate or embassy, which makes the e-visa and visa on arrival impossible for educational or business activities.

Another major benefit of applying for a visa at the embassy or consulate is that you can apply for a visa of longer than 30 days. The E-Visa and Visa on Arrival are only valid for 30 days from entry. If you want to visit Egypt for tourism purposes for longer than a month, you can apply for a visa at the embassy for a longer period of time.

In addition to that, you can apply at the consulate much earlier than you can apply online. As soon as your travel information is booked, you can apply locally for your Egyptian tourist visa and avoid a hassle right before your trip. The visa is valid at any port of entry, too, meaning you can drive, sail, or fly into any part of Egypt without any issues.

What Is the Best Way to Get an Egyptian Visa?

The best option is visa on arrival.

Of all the different types of visas you can get to go to Egypt, I think there is a clear best option. As long as you qualify and your travel plans are less than 30 days in total, the Visa on Arrival is the clear best choice. It requires no work before your trip, no additional required documents, and no hidden fees.

As long as your passport meets the entry requirements and you bring cash for the visa, there is very little room for the process to go wrong. The Egyptian authorities were very friendly in helping us figure out how to buy our visa on arrival, and the immigration officers never even asked to see our travel itinerary.

E-Visas Are a Good Choice Too

If you don’t trust the visa on arrival process, or if you will need multiple entries into Egypt during your trip, the Egyptian E-Visa is the best bet. It is very straightforward and costs the same as the visa on arrival. The only drawback is that you need to spend some time filling out the online form before you travel, and you need to keep track of a printed copy of the e-visa while you travel to Egypt.

Personally, I think it is already enough of a task keeping track of my family members’ travel documents, and I’d much rather just handle it upon arrival at the Egyptian border in the airport. If you do decide to get an online e-visa to Egypt, make sure to use the  official government website  instead of an agency. The process is easy to do on your own, and agencies add fees that you simply shouldn’t have to pay.

Avoid the Embassy Route Unless It’s Your Only Choice

The least preferable way to get your visa is at a consulate or embassy in advance. If you need Egyptian travel visas for tourism of longer than 30 days, business, or something else, this is your only option. If all you need is a tourist visa for less than 30 days, and you’re eligible for one of the other two methods, definitely stick to those.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Egypt set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Consulate General for Egypt in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the date you arrive. Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

Visa requirements

British passport holders travelling to Egypt normally need a visa. Visa processing fees are non-refundable.

We advise you to get a visa before you travel, particularly if travelling for work or business. You can apply for a visa from the official Visa2Egypt portal or at your nearest Egyptian Consulate . Tourist visas granted using the e-visa system are valid for a maximum of 3 months.

The online e-visa portal (Visa2Egypt) does not currently accept applications from variant British passport holders (those from British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies).

All British passport holders can get a visa in advance by submitting an application in person or by post to the Egyptian Consulate in London . The specific requirements for the visa are listed on the website.

Alternatively, if you wish to get a visa on arrival, you can do so at approved bank kiosks within airport arrival halls, before reaching immigration counters. The visa fee is 25 US dollars, payable in dollars as the preferred currency, although you may also be able to pay in pounds sterling or euros. Visas granted on arrival are valid for a maximum of 30 days. There’s no need to buy a visa from an agent. In many cases agents will charge more than US$25 for a visa. If you’re harassed by an agent, report the incident to the tourist police in the airport terminal.

If you’re travelling to Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resorts for up to 15 days, you will receive a free entry permission stamp on arrival. If you intend to travel out of these areas or stay longer than 15 days, you must get a visa.

If you have travelled to one of the South Sinai Red Sea resorts, entered without a visa and your plans have changed, you can normally purchase a visa at Sharm el Sheikh airport to allow you to travel elsewhere.

Applications for visa extensions should be made at Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices. You may have difficulties leaving Egypt with an out of date visa. You will normally have to pay a fine if your visa is out of date by more than 14 days.

For further information and enquiries, contact the Egyptian Consulate in London .

Visa extensions

Apply for visa extensions at the Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices. You may face difficulties if you try to leave Egypt on an expired visa. You may be fined if your visa has expired by more than 14 days.

Contact the Egyptian Consulate in London for more information.

Visas at the Egypt-Sudan Border Crossing

If you’re crossing the border from Sudan, the Egyptian authorities have advised it is still possible to get a visa on arrival for the regular cost of 25 US dollars.

HIV test for work permits

You will need to show your result from a HIV test to apply for a work permit.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need on TravelHealthPro’s Egypt guide . Depending on the country you’re arriving from, this may include a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Egypt . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

You’re allowed to bring in or take out up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds. There is no limit to the amount of hard currency that you can bring in, but you must declare it when you arrive if it’s worth more than 10,000 US dollars.

You must also declare certain valuables, including electrical equipment or video cameras, when you arrive. These will be noted in your passport. You may be asked to show these items again when you leave the country. If you do not have them on you, you may have to pay a high rate of customs duty.

Officials are likely to confiscate satellite phones or radio communications equipment unless you have prior clearance from the Ministry of Telecommunications.

Contact the Egyptian embassy in your country of residence for further information on customs requirements

Do you need a visa for Egypt?

Group walking into the entrance of one of the pyramids on a clear sunny day, Cairo, Egypt

The short answer is yes; foreign nationals from most countries - bar 10 - must obtain a visa before travelling to Egypt. For most nationalities, organising a visa for Egypt  can be done on arrival at Cairo International Airport or online via the Egyptian government's official e-visa portal. This includes citizens of Australia , New Zealand , the EU and the USA *. If you're not eligible to apply for a visa online, you'll need to do so through your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

A single entry visa is valid for three months from the date of issue and entitles the bearer to one month of travel in Egypt. If you're from a country that doesn't require a visa before travel, such as Bahrain, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, you can stay in Egypt for up to 3 months.

*As of September 3rd, Canadians can no longer apply for a visa on arrival and will have to obtain an e-visa before travelling.

If you wish to obtain your visa on arrival at Cairo Airport:

  • Purchase the visa at an approved bank kiosk within the arrivals hall before proceeding to the immigration counters.
  • You will be given a stamp to put on your passport.
  • Proceed to the immigration counters and a passport control official. Here, you must present your stamped passport with at least six months validity after arrival, a travel itinerary and documentation outlining accommodation and tour bookings.

Visas on arrival can be purchased in US dollars, British pounds or euros, and only in cash. Currently, the cost for a single entry tourist visa is equivalent to AUD$38 (USD$25).

  • Go to  visa2egypt.gov.eg . This is Egypt's only official government e-visa portal; however, other websites falsely claim to provide this service, sometimes at double the price.
  • Follow the prompts to sign up, sign in, apply, and pay online. Please note that Egypt e-visas can only be paid for in US dollars or euros. Egyptian pounds are not accepted as a form of payment for e-visas.
  • After your visa application has been processed, you will receive an email updating you on the status of your application.
  • If successful, you will be emailed a link to download your e-visa to present on arrival in Egypt. Passport control officers at Egyptian ports of entry will verify your e-visa on their system.

If you are eligible for an Egypt e-visa, you must create an application at least seven days before arrival. Currently, the cost for a single-entry tourist e-visa is equivalent to AUD$38 (USD $25). On arrival in Egypt, you must present a printout of your e-visa, along with a passport of at least six months validity after your arrival date, a travel itinerary, and documentation outlining accommodation and tour bookings.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain the relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Egypt Visa Application Requirements

Types of visas for Egypt

If you are applying for an Egypt visa, you need to know which one you need to apply for. This is based on your reason for traveling to Egypt:

  • Tourist – for tourist purposes
  • Entry – for business, work, study purposes etc. You must have an entry visa in order to complete the residence procedure in Egypt

Egypt visas are issued as single entry or multiple entry which means you can enter Egypt once or unlimited times within the validity of your visa.

  • Single entry – valid for 6 months for stays up to a maximum of 60 days
  • Multiple entry – valid for 6 months for stays of up to 90 days (30 days each stay)

Where to apply for Egypt visa

If you are a citizen of a country that is not eligible for visa exemption or visa on arrival, you must apply for a visa prior to your trip. You can do this through an Egyptian Embassy or Consulate located in the area you reside.

To find the nearest one, first go to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt and click on: “Ministry” and then “Egypt around the world”:

Egypt Visa Embassies and Consulates

On the next page, you will find a list of all the Egyptian missions around the world:

Egypt Visa Missions Worldwide

There are contact details, but no website addresses, so you can just enter the embassy or consulate in your location into a search engine to go to the relevant website.

The Egypt Visa Application Process and Requirements

Your Egypt visa will be processed between 5 and 10 days, but it’s worth checking with the embassy or consulate you will be dealing with because their timescales may be different. In any case, you should apply well in advance of your trip to allow for your application to be processed in time.

Please, note if you are from any of the countries that require pre-approval, the wait time is 6-8 weeks.

When you submit your application, all you need to do is to go to the respective embassy or consulate during their working hours and hand over your file. There is no need to make an appointment unless this is a requirement of the office you are dealing with. Check the website of the embassy or consulate to check this before arriving.

Step 1: Complete your application form

You need to complete an application form for your Egypt visa. Most of the embassies and consulates have links on their websites where you can download the form.

Alternatively, you can go to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt and click on: “Consular section” and then “Visa application”:

Egypt Visa Application Form

On the next page, scroll down and you can complete your application before printing it off:

Egypt Visa Application Form1

If you are applying for an e-visa, there is a link on the same page that will direct you to the e-visa portal :

Egypt Visa e-Visa Portal

Step 2: Get your documents ready

The next stage of the Egypt visa application process is to get your supporting documents ready to submit along with your application form.

It is very important to make sure you check what is required for your visa application, so spend some time looking at the website of the embassy or consulate you are dealing with before you start. This will save time later and ensure you don’t miss anything. If you submit an incomplete application, it will be rejected.

Please note, you are also required to provide originals AND photocopies of everything. Don’t forget to do this, as it will be seen as an incomplete application and it won’t be accepted.

Required documents for your Egypt visa:

1) Passport of all nationalities – must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel and have an empty visa page. Also, 2 copies of the passport’s information page are required

2) Photographs – 2 x recent color passport-sized photos, against a white background. The name of the applicant must be written on the back and the photo must be attached to the application form

3) A completed application form for Egypt visa

4) 2 x copies of the green card and/or valid visa

5) 2 x copies of school registration

6) 2 copies of round-trip ticket or confirmed itinerary

7) Hotel reservation

8) 2 copies of a letter from your company stating the purpose of the trip and financial guarantee of company and company name in US and Egypt; details of conference or seminar, dates of travel and length of stay

9) Marriage/birth certificate

10) Parent’s/Egyptian national’s passport or ID

11) A self-addressed envelope (for returning passports)

If you’re planning to obtain your flight reservation for visa without paying for the ticket, all you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

  • Visit the Visa Reservation website to choose the right package
  • Submit the travel details and make the payment online
  • Receive flight itinerary in email

Flight reservation without payment

Step 3: Submit your application

Depending on the Egyptian Embassy or Consulate you are dealing with, it is possible to submit your file in person or by mail, so check with the respective office of the options available to you.

When the visa staff processes your application, they may wish to ask you extra questions about the information you have supplied, and they may contact you to attend an interview. They could ask you:

  • Is this your first trip to Egypt?
  • What do you know about the country?
  • Are you meeting anyone in Egypt?
  • What work are you planning on doing when you are there?
  • What is your role in your home country?

If you get asked questions like these, all you need to do is answer to the best of your ability and remain calm. The visa staff is only trying to get all the information they need to make a decision about whether to approve your visa or not.

You’ll also have to pay the relevant fee for your visa. You can usually pay by cash, postal order, money order or cashier’s check, but again this depends on the embassy or consulate you are dealing with, so check their website first.

Egypt Visa Fee

Please note, these fees will be charged in the local currency of the country you are applying from.

You may also have to provide biometric data in the form of a scan of your fingerprints and a digital photo.

Step 4: Receive your visa

Once your visa application has been processed, the embassy or consulate will notify you and you can either collect your passport from the visa office or have it returned by mail. You need to check with the respective office which services they provide for returning passports.

Hopefully, you will find your visa inside your passport, but if it is not there, it may have been rejected for a reason. Common rejection reasons include:

  • Personal details don’t match your passport
  • Invalid passport
  • Missing documents
  • You already have a valid visa

Firstly, your passport must have at least 6 months remaining, so make sure it does, otherwise, you need a new one before you can apply for your Egypt visa. If you have a valid visa for Egypt already, you may not need to apply for a new one, so this should be the first thing to check, especially if you have been to Egypt before. Your personal details should match those in your passport, and if any of the required documents are missing, the embassy or consulate won’t accept your application, so check everything before you submit your file.

1) Do I need a visa to travel to Egypt?

Unless you are from those countries that don’t need a visa, you do need a visa to travel to Egypt

2) If I get a visa on arrival, how much does this cost?

The cost of a visa on arrival is $25

3) Should I apply for an Egypt visa at the embassy or should I apply for an e-visa?

Only citizens from certain countries are eligible to apply for an e-visa. If this is the case for you, it’s really up to you

4) Do I need to be pre-approved before I apply for an Egypt visa?

See above for the list of countries whose nationals require pre-approval

5) What is a multiple entry visa?

A multiple entry visa allows you to enter Egypt as many times as you like within the validity of the visa

6) Can I get my visa application processed any quicker?

This depends on the visa authority you are applying through, but most aim to process visa applications within 10 days. It’s up to you to apply well in advance of your trip

7) Can someone else apply on my behalf?

Yes, you can get someone else to submit your file and collect your passport, but you must sign your own application form, and if the office wish you to attend an interview, you must attend in person

8) Do I need separate visas if I am visiting more than one city in Egypt?

No, you just need to apply for one visa, either single or multiple entry

When you know where to apply for your Egypt visa, all you need to do is to:

  • Complete Egypt visa application form
  • Get your documents ready
  • Submit your file
  • Receive Egypt visa

Before long, you’ll have your Egypt visa in your hand and then you can prepare for your exciting trip away!

Egypt eVisa vs. Visa on Arrival: The easier way to travel to Egypt

Important information - The Egypt Visa on Arrival has currently been suspended. The suspension applies to US Green Card holders and US citizens; they cannot currently get a Visa on Arrival in Egypt. They should apply for the Egpyt eVisa before their trip to ensure entry to the country. This is recommended for tourism purposes.

Exploring the mystique of Egypt begins with choosing the correct visa. Most travelers to Egypt have two primary options without visiting an embassy: the Egypt eVisa and the Egypt Visa on Arrival . Each option offers unique benefits and processes, but understanding their differences is key to a hassle-free journey.

This article will delve into the specifics of both visa types, helping you decide which Egypt visa suits your travel needs for an unforgettable Egyptian adventure. Let’s unravel the application process and prepare for this trip!

Egypt eVisa: Apply online for your Egypt visa

The Egypt eVisa, an electronic visa , simplifies the application process and allows entry into Egypt for tourism, business, or medical purposes. It's a modern alternative to traditional visas, eliminating the need to visit an embassy or consulate. It gives you the convenience of applying online and securing a visa before departure . Travel with the peace of mind that your arrival will go smoothly.

Eligible criteria to apply for an Egypt eVisa

The eVisa is available to citizens of over 74 countries , including all EU member states, the UK, and the USA. Travelers can check their eligibility using the Visa Checker Tool . Tourists from the United States, the European Union, or the United Kingdom visiting Sinai Red Sea resorts for up to 14 days don’t require a visa. Still, a visa is necessary for traveling beyond these areas.

How to apply for an Egypt eVisa

Applying for an Egypt eVisa is a straightforward and efficient process. In just three simple steps, which you can complete in 15 minutes or less, you can secure your Egypt eVisa online :

Provide your contact and travel info on our website or use the iVisa app . Select your preferred processing time and pay the visa fees.

Complete the rest of your Egypt eVisa application form and provide a scan of your passport.

Submit your application. You’ll receive your Egypt eVisa within the chosen timeframe. Print a copy and keep a digital version on your mobile device for ease during travel.

Find all the details about the Egypt eVisa application here .

Getting an Egypt Visa on Arrival

The Egypt Visa on Arrival is also an alternative to Embassy visas. This process is relatively simple, and you can apply at certain Egyptian airports when you arrive in the country. You don’t need to worry about visa application before the trip, but it’s a risky choice. If anything goes wrong, you may not be allowed to enter Egypt. Be prepared to face long lines at the airport .

Eligibility criteria for the Egypt Visa on Arrival

Like the eVisa, citizens of many countries, including the U.S. and the UK, are eligible for the Visa on Arrival . Since the list of eligible countries may change yearly, we recommend consulting the nearest Embassy of Egypt for updated information. Besides your nationality, you must consider arriving in Egypt at one of the following airports to get an Egypt Visa on Arrival:

Cairo International Airport, Cairo

Hurghada International Airport, Hurghada

St Catherine International Airport, St Catherina

Borg El Arab International Airport, Alexandria

Sharm El Sheikh International Airport

Luxor Airport International Airport

How to apply for an Egypt Visa on Arrival

The Egypt Visa on Arrival process offers flexibility for travelers who haven’t secured a visa beforehand. However, note that getting a visa on arrival can involve waiting in queues, and there is no prior guarantee of visa approval, making it less predictable than the eVisa option. Follow these steps to apply for this visa type:

Arrive at an Egyptian airport and find the bank kiosks within airport arrival halls.

Complete the visa application form and provide the necessary paperwork to the immigration officer.

Pay the visa fee in USD, pounds sterling, or euros, with USD preferred. The cost for a single-entry visa is US$25, and US$60 for a multiple-entry one.

Egypt eVisa vs. Visa on Arrival

Choosing between the Egypt eVisa and the Visa on Arrival is a key decision for travelers to Egypt. While both facilitate entry into this historic land, they differ notably in application process, convenience, and predictability.

Application process: The e-Visa offers a seamless online application, ensuring you have your visa before departure. In contrast, the Visa on Arrival requires applying upon reaching Egypt, which can involve waiting and uncertainty.

Eligibility: The eVisa is available to over 74 countries, making it accessible to a broader audience. The Visa on Arrival is also widely available but has specific conditions for some nationalities.

Convenience and predictability: The eVisa is processed quickly and efficiently online, providing a stress-free experience. The Visa on Arrival doesn’t require applying in advance but entails airport queues and lacks the pre-trip assurance of an approved visa.

Cost: The eVisa and Visa on Arrival have the same government fees. In summary, the eVisa generally stands out as the better option due to its convenience, ease of application, and greater predictability, making it a preferred choice for a hassle-free visit to Egypt.

When planning your trip to Egypt, timing is crucial. The best time to visit Egypt is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are milder and more comfortable for sightseeing. Here are some key factors to consider:

  • The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
  • Peak season brings more tourists, but if that’s your only option, be prepared for the crowds.
  • Summer months in Egypt can be scorching hot, so consider that if you’re particularly heat sensitive.

When planning your trip to Egypt, consider attending major festivals like Ramadan or national holidays, which can impact opening hours and crowd levels at popular attractions.

To help you, I’ve created a guide covering everything you need to know while Visiting Egypt During Ramadan: Insider Guide to Celebration .

Before embarking on your Egyptian adventure, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements and travel costs. Check the visa requirements for your nationality well in advance. Many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports, but it’s best to confirm and be prepared. The visa fee is generally around $25 USD.

As for the trip to Egypt cost is relatively affordable compared to other popular destinations. You can expect to spend around $50-$100 per day for a mid-range traveler, including accommodation, food, transportation, and entry fees to major attractions. When exploring attractions, transportation like local buses and taxis is budget-friendly. Consider a Nile Cruise package for an all-inclusive experience.

Here are some unique adventures that you must experience when traveling to Egypt.

Planning a trip to Egypt can raise a lot of questions, so we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your journey.

Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially when traveling with a reputable tour company or guide. However, it’s always important to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and follow the advice of local authorities.

For long-distance travel, consider taking domestic flights or booking a Nile River cruise. Within cities, taxis and public transportation are affordable and convenient options. Hiring a private driver or tour guide can also make navigating Egypt more comfortable.

While it’s possible to explore some sites independently, booking guided tours in advance can provide invaluable insights and ensure a smoother experience. Guided tours are highly recommended for complex sites like the pyramids, Valley of the Kings, and ancient temples.

It’s important to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or Islamic mosques. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Women may also want to carry a scarf to cover their heads when entering mosques.

No specific vaccinations are required for most travelers, but it’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip. Ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid fever. Bringing insect repellent and staying hydrated are also recommended.

Yes, most nationalities require a visa to visit Egypt. However, the process is relatively straightforward, and there are a couple of ways to obtain one:

Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egypt’s international airports. The process involves filling out a form, paying a fee (typically around $25 USD, payable in cash), and having a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

E-Visa: For added convenience, many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa in advance through the official Egyptian government portal ([invalid URL removed]). The process is entirely online and typically takes a few days for approval.

Important Notes:

Specific Requirements:  Always double-check the visa requirements for your specific nationality, as there may be variations. Some countries may have additional requirements or longer processing times.

Visa Validity:  The most common tourist visa for Egypt is valid for 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, consider applying for a multiple-entry visa or inquire about visa extensions upon arrival.

Resources:  For official visa information and updates, visit the Egyptian government website or consult your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

By following this expert Egypt travel guide, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and insider tips to plan an extraordinary journey through Cairo and the heart of ancient Egyptian civilization, Nile.

Egypt promises to leave a lasting impression and will surely capture your heart. So, pack your sense of adventure, embrace the rich culture, and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to this bucket list-worthy destination.

Eid holiday travel: top 10 destinations, visa requirements and more.

Peninsula

Mahmoud Elmazaty | The Peninsula

Doha, Qatar: As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close, people in Qatar are eagerly anticipating the announcement of Eid holidays to plan their next travel destination. With many countries experiencing ideal weather conditions during this time of year, it's essential to make thorough arrangements to ensure a memorable and enjoyable trip.

In an exclusive interview with The Peninsula , travel experts provide valuable insights into choosing and planning destinations for Eid Al Fitr holidays, covering everything from popular places to visa requirements, travel budgets, accommodations, and more.

Destinations

Harshad Kamarudeen, Director of Operations at Maps and Vogs Holidays, has spotlighted the top destinations for Eid this year, highlighting Dubai, Turkiye, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Thailand as the most sought-after locations. These places provide a variety of experiences, from cultural explorations and beach vacations to spiritual retreats.

He also pointed out a variance in travel preferences between citizens and expatriates. Kamarudeen noted, "Qataris prefer destinations such as Istanbul, Phuket, London, and Paris, whereas residents, including expatriates, usually lean towards Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan."

egyptian tourist visa on arrival

Ahmed Marouf, Marketing Officer at Victoria Travels, emphasized the popularity of cities like “Dubai, Cairo, London, Paris, Geneva, and Vienna during the Eid holidays, alongside rising favorites like Phuket, Tbilisi, and Baku.”

Marouf observed that “recent trends have shown a growing interest in lesser-known destinations, eco-tourism spots, and locations that provide unique cultural experiences.”

Accommodation

Apartments, hotels, resorts, and dormitories, there are a variety of options to choose from when it comes to accommodation. But then hotels and resorts have an advantage as far as safety and comfort are concerned.

Travel experts always recommend hotels and resorts as they offer safer and more comfortable stays, providing essential services and amenities that enhance the overall travel experience.

While Airbnb options may be cheaper, hotels offering basic essential services and amenities are a preferred choice for many, especially families.

Cost estimations

For a one-week stay in a popular Eid holiday destination, budget trips typically range from QR4,000 to QR6,000, while luxury travel options can cost from QR12,000 to QR30,000. These costs vary based on factors such as hotel accommodations and flight choices.

Visa advice

According to the experts, GCC residents enjoy visa-on-arrival in Georgia and Armenia, while Indians receive it in Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan offers e-visas for most nationals, and Turkey requires various documentation, including flight tickets, hotel bookings, and bank statements.

Qataris benefit from visa-on-arrival arrangements in almost all these countries.

Travel Advice

"Pack Wisely: Pack light and bring essential items. Stay Safe: Keep your belongings secure, avoid risky areas, and be aware of local scams or dangers. Stay Connected: Keep friends and family updated on your whereabouts, and have emergency contacts readily available," advised Marouf, emphasizing travel safety.

Kamarudeen stressed the importance of travel insurance for all travelers, providing protection against unforeseen circumstances such as flight delays, cancellations, lost baggage, and medical emergencies, including COVID-related issues.
