The Best Family-Friendly Safaris In South Africa 2024

One of our passions in life is letting our kids experience animals in their natural habitat. We love South Africa as a family holiday destination and we love to take the kids on family-friendly safaris in South Africa.

We have been to South Africa many times over the years and can say that it is the best country for taking the kids on safari.

We also go every year and are always trying different safari lodges in South Africa for families.

We’ve pulled together our recommendations for the best places to go on safari in South Africa with kids. These are places we have visited with our kids and have loved.

They are all very different and range in price so there should be something to suit everyone.

Before we list our recommendations for South African safaris that are kid friendly, we just wanted to touch briefly on why it is so great to go on safari with kids.

We’ll also explain why South Africa is the best choice for a family safari because we do get a lot of questions on this subject!

The Best Family-Friendly Safaris In South Africa 2024 1

Why go on safari with kids?

If you’ve never been on safari with kids but love the idea of it, we highly recommend it for a number of reasons.

  • It’s so much better for kids to see animals in their natural environment than visiting a zoo. Obviously going on safari is not always an option because of the cost (although we have written a post on how to plan a budget African safari ). If you can’t go on an African safari right now, check that the zoo or animal park you are visiting is ethical. You can also try some virtual safaris with Wild Earth .
  • It’s such an amazing educational experience for them. Many of the family-friendly lodges provide child-friendly safari activities and educate the kids on animal conservation and protection. We feel it’s so important to educate the next generation on these matters.

Why go to South Africa on safari with kids?

Having been on safari in quite a few countries across eastern and southern Africa, we feel you can’t beat visiting South Africa with kids . It’s a great place to go on safari with your family for a number of reasons.

  • South Africa has it all. From the Big Five animals – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and Cape buffalo – to antelope, zebra, hippo, giraffe, hyena and a wide variety of bird and marine animals.
  • There is an amazing choice of parks and game reserves where you can view these animals in their natural habitat.  Many of these parks are actually in the Western and Eastern Capes, close to the popular ‘Garden Route’ . These parks or game reserves are malaria free and so are easily accessible for families with young children.
  • Many of the parks are self-drive with good camping grounds so you can do a relatively cheap safari compared to some of the other African countries. There’s no doubt that an all-inclusive luxury game lodge with the Big 5 can be prohibitively expensive. There are, however, other ways to see the Big 5 without having to win the lottery.
  • South Africa has so much more than safaris to offer the family traveller. There are many family-friendly activities in South Africa that you can combine with a safari. You really should pay a visit to Cape Town as there are so many family-friendly things to do in Cape Town and lots of great family accommodation in Cape Town .

Our top 5 family-friendly safaris in South Africa

An African safari is one of our favourite things to do in South Africa so we decided to recommend the best family-friendly safaris in South Africa.

These are family-friendly South African safaris that we have done ourselves and have got the big thumbs up from the kids.

We have put our top picks in ascending price order.

1. Addo Elephant National Park

Big 5 – YES.

Entrance fee: R376 (adult) and R188 (child).

See here for the most current entry fees for Addo .

Addo Elephant National Park is located about 60km from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape – one of the best areas for malaria free safaris for families in South Africa .

If you are going to self-drive, all you need to pay is the entrance fee which makes it a really economical safari experience.

Addo Elephant National Park entrance gate

Addo Elephant National Park entrance gate

Addo started out as an elephant park back in 1931 with just 11 elephants and was set up to protect the remaining Addo elephants from being completely wiped out by hunters and farmers.

If elephants are your thing (or your child’s thing) – you will not be disappointed with Addo because they are everywhere!

Family of elephants heading to the watering hole at sunset at Addo

We were in the park a good 30 mins after closing time because we got stuck behind a family meandering up the hill to a watering spot.

We didn’t want to pass because they were clearly protecting their baby, so we hung back.

We were worried we would be locked in but the ranger found us and told us we could take our time. It was amazing watching them with nobody around as the sun was setting.

In 2003 they introduced six lions to the park. They now have around fourteen, although we didn’t see any on our drive.

Our chances of seeing them may have been improved on a guided safari, but we were happy doing our own thing on this occasion.

If you want to book a guided safari, make sure to do it well in advance through  SanParks  as they get booked up.

Addo Accommodation for families

There are various accommodation options in the park, ranging from campsites to pitch your tent, to luxury lodges, so there is something to suit every budget.

We stayed outside of the park where there are also plenty of accommodation options. These are all within a couple of kilometeres of the main gate.

Top recommendation : AfriCamps Addo – we have stayed in lots of AfriCamps accommodatio around South Africa. They offer affordable safari tent style accommodation.

Budget recommendation : Avoca River Cabins – lovely accommodation and so reasonable.

Luxury recommendation : River Bend Lodge – a private villa on a private concession in Addo Elephant National Park.

2. The Kruger National Park

Entrance fee : R460 (adult) and R230 (child).

See here for the most current Kruger entrance fees .

Visiting Johannesburg with kids and keen to take them on safari?  You wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to visit the Kruger National Park .

It’s an enormous national park relatively close to Johannesburg that borders Mozambique to the east and Zimbabwe to the north.

You can self-drive and stay at relatively inexpensive campsites within the park which is why we have put this second.

There are also some eye-wateringly expensive luxury lodges. If you’re looking for a luxury safari experience in the Kruger, here is a list of the most family-friendly accommodations in the Kruger National Park and our guide to Timbavati Game Reserve family accommodation .

We stayed at an inexpensive campsites located within the park in our own tent, but there are also chalets equipped with bedding. You can check on the SanParks website for more info .

Some of the campsites have pools which were great for relaxing and cooling down between morning and afternoon safaris, especially when temperatures were reaching 40 degrees.

We stayed at the Malelane campsite and Lower Sabie (with pool).

We entered via the Malelane entrance. Within two minutes of passing through the gates had a very close encounter with a rhino.

We saw him to our left as we were driving and he was not slowing down so we sped up a little to get out of his way. The rest of the game viewing was just as spectacular.

The Kruger National Park currently advises that people take anti-malarials because of recent cases of malaria but you should check the situation before you go as it can change.

See here for a guide to visiting the Kruger .

3. Buffelsdrift Game Lodge

Check prices for Buffelsdrift on Booking.com .

Big 5 – NO.

For prices, it’s best to check with the lodge because they have various different packages available.

Buffelsdrift is just outside the town of Oudtshoorn. We stayed in a traditional (but quite luxurious) family safari tent .

It had 2 bedrooms separated by the bathroom (with claw foot bath, double sinks and outdoor shower) and a lovely veranda that looked out over the lake and the hippos.

The perfect spot from which to enjoy a sun-downer!

Arriving at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge

We went for the half-board option and chose a game drive and elephant experience. Buffelsdrift wa a great choice because it was conveniently on our route to Oudtshoorn to visit the Cango Caves and crocodiles.

It was a bit cheaper than some other private game reserves because it doesn’t have the Big 5 animals. They have a lot of wildlife wandering between the tents, such as Nyala and during breakfast and dinner by the lake, we would see hippos.

There was also the option of elephant, meerkat or lion experience. We opted for the elephant experience – and it certainly was an experience!

You can book your Buffelsdrift accommodation here on Booking.com with flexible cancellation.

Another relatively inexpensive safari option if you want the safari tent accommodation and guided game drive is  Chandelier , also near Oudtshoorn.

They don’t have the big 5, but they do have a huge area to explore on foot which the kids loved. There was a giraffe feeding experience where you can buy food and hand feed them at breakfast time.

We just did one night here on the way back down the Garden Route.

4. Kariega Game Reserve

Price – check with the lodge or speak to Go2Africa about Kariega packages .

Kariega is situated in the Eastern Cape, about 40km from Grahamstown (and about 150km from Port Elizabeth) and incorporates both the Bushman’s and Kariega rivers.

We love that Kariega is family-friendly because it is built on the land that was once owned by the boy’s great, great, great, great, great grandfather.

He was one of the original English settlers in 1820 and the remains of his house can be seen on the Kariega land.

Kariega sitting above the Kariega valley

One of the great things about Kariega is that they run a daily kids programme between 11am and 2pm, offering guided trails in the bush (within the boundaries of the Main Lodge).

On this walk the kids will be tasked with identifying animals and making animal related arts and crafts. It is fun and educational.

Children can accompany their parents on game drives, although children 5 and under is at the ranger’s and general manager’s discretion based on a safety assessment.

If they can’t accompany you, there is a babysitting service.

George ever on the look out for animals

George ever on the look out for animals

There’s a play area in the Main Lodge, which is also where dinner is taken. If the kids have finished their meal, they can go and play, leaving you to enjoy a meal in peace .

If you are staying with children under 10, you will only be able to stay in the Kariega Main Lodge (log chalets).

They’re super cosy and some have private pools with a great deck overlooking the Kariega valley for sun-downers! Kariega is extremely warm and welcoming and you will definitely enjoy your stay here.

You can book Kariega family accommodation here on Booking.com with flexible cancellation.

5. Shamwari

Price – check with the lodge.

Shamwari is located around 75km from Port Elizabeth and is easily doable if you are driving the Garden Route.

It’s one of the world’s leading safari and game reserves and works hard in the areas of conservation and environmental education.

Shamwari is also famed for having had Mrs Thatcher and Paris Hilton among its clientele!

Rhino encounter at Shamwari

There are two family-friendly lodges at Shamwari ( Shamwari Riverdene and Shamwari Long Lee Manor for kids 8+) and a large main pool with shallow end for children. Shamwari Sarili Lodge is also available for larger groups.

Getting up close with the lions in Shamwari

Getting up close with the lions in Shamwari

It’s getting into the very expensive bracket but it’s truly a 5 star experience and you will be very well looked after!

We haven’t stayed with kids but have visited prior to having the kids and loved the set up there.

Children under 4 aren’t permitted on game drives but there is a childminding service. There’s a great activity centre for kids where they can zip line, wall climb and access tree houses with interconnecting walkways.

Arts and crafts are also offered in the kid’s centre.

If you’re looking for luxury family-friendly safaris in South Africa (in a non-malarial area), this is the one for you.

We have also recently stayed at these fabulous lodges in the Kruger. They deserve to be on the list of the best family-friendly safaris in South Africa so will update our post with details on our stay shortly.

The Best Family Safaris in South Africa

Your post is really informative and I love your photos! Safaris look like such an awesome experience for all but especially for the kids!

Thanks for your comment Tammy. Yes, we think the kids get so much from the experience. It’s massively educational and fun at the same time!

Thanks for this post. Very helpful as we plan a safari with our 4.5 year old. Just wondering about the Buffelsdrift Game Lodge as you mention an elephant, meerkat or lion experience options. Are these animals pets or trained in some way? How do they make them come close to people for these experiences? Worried about the animal welfare if there is an elephant or lion experience as I wonder about the training methods they are using and what the lions fate is after they are grown up. Thanks.

Hi Laurie, thanks for your comment. We are also concerned about animal welfare and have boycotted turtle hatcheries in Sri Lanka and Elephant orphanages there because we have heard bad reports. With Buffelsdrift, we believe the animals are cared for. The Lions and Meerkats are essentially wild. When they say ‘experience’ they mean viewing, as with other game reserves. The lion cubs were born in captivity elsewhere and brought to Buffelsdrift a few years ago so they had more space and can therefore never be released into the wild. The elephants were orphaned and are tame. We truly got the impression that they were cared for and loved. I hope this helps you with your decision. Thanks, Jacs.

South Africa Safari - Compare 1,026 Tours

South Africa is one of the world’s most varied holiday destinations. From the classic safari country of Kruger National Park to the stately ‘mother city’ of Cape Town; from the snow-sprinkled heights of the Drakensberg to the parched red dunescapes of the Kalahari; from the gorgeous Winelands around Stellenbosch to the idyllic beaches of the Garden Route – South Africa is a true all-rounder that attracts more than its fair share of repeat visitors. It is also the most affordable and well equipped of African safari destinations, particularly well suited to family holidays, to those seeking a malaria-free holiday, to dedicated foodies and wine-lovers, and for combining a foray into Big Five country with a beach holiday and/or city break.

8 Questions About South Africa Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

family safaris south africa

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

“There is no bad time to take a South African holiday. But certain parts of the country are far better at specific times of the year. If a safari will be the main event of your South African tour, most of the country’s key parks and reserves are at their best in the southern hemisphere winter months of May to September, when daytime temperatures are cooler, the bush is less dense allowing for better visibility, and wildlife tends to gather around limited water sources. For beach-lovers, by contrast, the main coastal resorts are at their best in the southern hemisphere summer (November to March). Special interest groups such as bird-watchers and photographers may also prefer to undertake a safari in summer, when resident bird populations are boosted by large numbers of migrant birds, and the clear sky and greener countryside make for a more photogenic backdrop.”

Why visit South Africa, what are the major attractions?

“Variety is the keynote of South African holidays. The country boasts one of the continent’s finest safari destinations in the form of Kruger National Park and nearby private reserves, while other key Big Five safari reserves include Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and malaria-free Madikwe and Pilanesberg. Safaris aside, South Africa is renowned for its fantastic beaches, limitless hiking opportunities, wonderful outdoor climate and good-value dining and wining scene. The main focus of non-safari sightseeing is Cape Town, which is gracefully perched below Table Mountain on a scenic stretch of Atlantic coastline, close to the whale-watching hub of Hermanus and the historical Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.”

How much does a South African safari cost?

“South African safari prices will depend greatly on the level of comfort you expect. At one extreme, self-drive camping safaris in somewhere like Kruger might work out at under US$100 for a couple per day. At the other extreme, all-inclusive safari packages at one of the country’s more exclusive private safari lodges might be 10 or 20 times more expensive. A good compromise between comfort and cost is a safari using the well-run rest camps that can be found throughout Kruger and in many other key national parks and provincial reserves. Accommodation aside, extras such as food, wine and other drinks are very cheap by international standards.”

How is the wildlife viewing?

“Excellent. Kruger National Park and neighboring private reserves host large populations of all the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), and rank among the top African safari destinations when it comes to spotting white rhino, as well as the rarer black rhino, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog. All these safari favorites are also likely to be encountered in Madikwe and Pilanesberg Game Reserves, as well as in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and the various small private reserves of the Eastern Cape. Outside of the major Big Five reserves, many parts of the country are still home to a variety of antelope, monkeys and small predators, all of which might be encountered by hikers and ramblers. Bird watching is consistently excellent throughout the country, while locally conspicuous marine wildlife includes penguins, whales and giant turtles.”

How safe is South Africa for tourists?

“Crime is a genuine issue in the larger cities, especially Johannesburg, but not so much in the game reserves, smaller towns and beach resorts that form the focal points of most South African safari trips. Follow local advice about safety, avoid walking around cities at night, and you should be fine. Malaria is absent from most parts of the country, the one major exception being Kruger National Park and its immediate environs, but even here the risk is far lower than in most other African safari destinations. Madikwe and Pilanesberg are Africa’s premier malaria-free safari destinations. Many reserves in South Africa offer guided walking safaris in areas inhabited by potentially dangerous animals such as elephant, black rhino and lion, but the risk of an incident is minimal provided that you listen to your guide at all times, and treat wildlife with respect. Possibly the biggest risk to life and limb in South Africa is a car accident, so self-drivers should adopt a more defensive and cautious approach than they might at home.”

How do I select a reliable tour operator for a South Africa trip?

“It’s worth doing a bit of research into operators before you book a South Africa tour. Look for reviews of any given operator on SafariBookings.com and possibly other online portals; the more reviews an operator has received, the more confident you can be of its reliability. If you have friends who have visited the country, or who live there, ask for word-of-mouth recommendations before booking any South African safari packages. Check out the company’s website too – as a rule its level of professionalism will reflect that of the company it represents. Once in South Africa, hotels and guesthouses can usually point you to tried-and-tested operators for day outings and other short local tours.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“South African safari accommodation ranges from no-frills campsites to exclusive upmarket lodges offering the last word in safari chic. In between these extremes, most national parks and provincial reserves have at least one well-run rest camp offering camping facilities and self-catering chalets (usually en suite but occasionally using shared bathrooms). For those who don’t want to immerse themselves in the bush, a selection of mid-range hotels can be found within easy driving distance of many national park and reserve entrance gates. Exclusive lodges are generally associated with private reserves and concessions that offer all-inclusive safari packages incorporating guided game drives and walks.”

What can I expect from South African safaris?

“Generally South Africa has a more developed feel than other African safari destinations. Most national parks and other reserves can be reached via good, surfaced roads, which certainly isn’t the case in many other parts of Africa. Some, such as Kruger, actually have an internal network of surfaced roads, and it is the only major African safari destination where a 4WD would be a luxury rather than a necessity, and the most suitable one for self-drive safaris. Likewise, most national park rest camps are well equipped for self-caterers, and many have well-stocked grocery shops. Further, the wildlife in South Africa is as wild as it is in most parts of Africa, the standard of guiding is unusually high, and people on organized safaris can expect excellent close-up sightings of everything from the Big Five to smaller animals such as birds and lizards.”

Young family on safari in South Africa.

Why is South Africa the best destination for a family safari?

1. malaria free safaris.

The main reason that South Africa is the best destination for a family safari is because there is a great selection of game lodges in the malaria free areas . This is a big consideration for many families who want to take young children on safari.

2. Children of all ages are welcome

There are lots of places where you can take a family safari in South Africa with some lodges accepting babies.

You need to check their terms regarding game drives though. Although they may accept babies at their accommodation, it is unlikely they will accept babies on game drives (unless they can offer a private vehicle for your family),

Most lodges will accept children 5+ on game drives. Any younger and it will be at the manager’s discretion.

The lodges that we have highlighted all offer some form of children’s entertainment. If you are taking a family safari in South Africa with very young children, these lodges also provide childcare.

3. Self-drive safaris available

The infrastructure in South Africa is also a lot better than many of the other African countries. This means that taking a self-drive family safari in South Africa is much easier than in other African countries.

This is an important consideration if you are looking at family safaris in South Africa on a budget .

4. There is so much to see and do in South Africa with kids

When you’re done with your family-friendly South African safari , you can head off to enjoy the other highlights of South Africa.

The beaches in South Africa are beautiful but so are the winelands. Wine tasting in South Africa can be surprisingly family-friendly!

The best family safaris in South Africa

There are four main areas that we recommend for going on safari with kids in South Africa: The Eastern Cape, the Waterberg region, Pilanesberg National Park and North West Province.

All of these areas are malaria free which is an important factor to consider when taking an African safari with kids.

The Kruger National Park is one of the best places to go on safari in South Africa but we haven’t listed it because it not malaria-free.

If you do plan to visit the Kruger with kids, the best time to go is during the winter months (May to September) when the malaria risk is lower.

Family safaris in the Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape is one of the best places in South Africa to go on safari with young kids because it is malaria free and a safari here can easily be incorporated into a typical Garden Route itinerary.

Many people who are visiting Cape Town and exploring the Garden Route will tag on a few days at the end of their trip and visit one of the game reserves in the Eastern Cape.

All of these family-friendly game lodges in the Eastern Cape are located fairly close to each other.

Kariega Game Reserve

Kariega Game Reserve is located close to Kenton-on-Sea and covers 10,000 hectares of bush land and incorporates two rivers.

There are daily children’s activities in the Kids’ Club including guided trails and animal related arts and crafts. Children are allowed on game drives but it will be at the safari guide’s discretion for children under 5.

Children of all ages are welcome at Kariega, although children under 10 cannot stay in the Ukhozi Lodge , River Lodge or Settlers Lodge

Family accommodation is found in the Kariega Main Lodge – 3 bedroom chalets with a private pool that sit on the ridge overlooking the Kariega River.

The Homestead is for large groups of 10 people.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Shamwari is perhaps the most luxurious of the game reserves in the Eastern Cape. It has some excellent facilities for families, including an incredible children’s centre and play area. You can read more about their Kids on Safari programme here .

Children under 4 aren’t allowed on game drives but there is plenty of childcare available.

We love how dedicated they are to wildlife conservation.

Family accommodation is found in the Riverdene Family Lodge,   Long Lee Manor or Sarili Lodge (which can accommodate 10 people).

If you have slightly older children (12+), you can stay at Eagles Crag .

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is located just north of Grahamstown. There are only 26 rooms in the 22,000 hectare reserve that lies either side of the Great Fish River so you won’t be jostling with other game vehicles to spot the wildlife.

Children of all ages are welcome. They receive a special welcome gift on arrival and game drives are tailored to suit families. There are also additional children’s activities for when you are not on safari.

Family accommodation is found in the Kwandwe Uplands Homestead and Kwandwe Melton Manor .

You can read more about kids on safari at Kwandwe here .

Amakhala Game Reserve

Amakhala Game Reserve is located 45 minutes drive from Port Elizabeth and comprises of 8,500 hectares of land once occupied by the original settlers in South Africa.

There is a large range of accommodation available here ranging from 3 to 5 stars so there is something for every budget.

Families are important at Amakhala Game Reserve and they have introduced a kids under 12 stay free policy (and kids aged 12 – 16 pay 50% of the adult price).

Family accommodation is found in:

  • Woodbury Lodge
  • Woodbury Tented Camp
  • HillsNek Safari Camp
  • Leeuwenbosch Country House

Children’s game drives have been specifically designed for children. They will stick to the gravel roads and avoid getting close to dangerous animals. The game drives are suitable for children aged 2 – 7 years old and one adult can accompany them.

There are experienced child minders available for children under 2.

You can read more about children on safari at Lalibela here including all the other activities available to children.

Family accommodation can be found in Mark’s Camp .

Addo Elephant National Park

If you are looking to do a self-drive safari on a budget in a malaria free area, Addo Elephant National Park is the best choice for you.

This started out as a sanctuary for elephants but has expanded to include the Big 5 . The animals roam over 125,000 hectares and while you have a good chance of seeing elephants, sightings of Lion or Leopard are much rarer.

You can book accommodation in the park through SanParks – but you do need to book well in advance. They have a wide range of options to suit all budgets.

Family safaris in the Waterberg Region Limpopo Province

The Waterberg Region in the Limpopo Province is located around 3.5 hours’ drive north of Johannesburg close to the border with Botswana.

The area offers some dramatic scenery with the majestic Waterberg Mountain Range dominating the skyline.

The best game lodge for families in the Waterberg region is:

Marataba Safari Lodge

Marataba Safari Lodge is one of the Top 20 Resorts in South Africa according to Condé Nast readers.

It is a 21,000 hectare area of the Marakele National Park on the foothills of the Waterberg Mountains.

Children of all ages are welcome and there are children’s activities at the Mack & Madi Kids’ Adventure experience as well as a fun clubhouse. You can even have a sleepout at the Thabametsi Treehouse!

Kids aged 3 – 5 can participate in bush rambles and kids aged 6+ can join adults on game drives.

Family accommodation is in the form of safari glamping tents . There are 15 tents at the Safari Lodge, 4 of which are suitable for families.

Clubhouse at Marataba Safari Lodge in the Waterberg Region in South Africa.

Family safaris in the North West Province

Just outside of the Waterberg region and bordering Botswana in the North West Province of South Africa is Madikwe Game Reserve.

It is made up of grassland, forest and the rocky Tshwene Tshwene hills. It is famed for its large population of African hunting dog and its wild and rugged landscape.

The best game lodge for families in the North West Province is in the Madikwe Game Reserve.

Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge

Within the Madikwe Game Reserve you will find Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge .

Note that the main lodge doesn’t allow children under 10 but Little Madikwe Private Camp is just perfect for families.

It offers a private 2-bedroom villa (with option of adding another 2 suites for larger families). There is a private pool, private chef and private game viewing vehicle. The nearby watering hole can also be seen from your villa

There is a Junior Ranger programme that gets the kids learning about the bush through hands on experiences.

Family safaris in Pilanesberg National Park

Pilanesberg National Park is just a few hours drive north of Johannesburg making it the closest game reserve to Johannesburg.

It is the ideal place to take a South African safari with kids if you don’t have time to travel further from Johannesburg or you are tagging on a safari to the end of your South African adventure.

Note that Sun City is not far away so you could even squeeze a visit in here which the kids will love.

Some of the best game lodges for families in the Pilanesberg National Park are:

Ivory Tree Game Lodge

Ivory Tree Game Lodge offers a family room with a private plunge pool. Children under 6 are not allowed on game drives.

Key Questions:

Are children allowed on safari .

Most game reserves and safari parks will be open to families with children, and many will have child-friendly activities. Game drives can be a wonderful chance for children to engage with the natural world, and camps — such as those inside places like the Kruger National Park — are fantastic for allowing kids to roam freely while staying safe.

Which safari is best for kids?

Both Madikwe and Addo offer family-friendly safaris, providing specially crafted activities and accommodations suitable for young adventurers.

Can you take children on safari in South Africa?

Absolutely! From the Kruger to the Kalahari, there are so many family-friendly game reserves. This self-drive safari will take you through Cape Town and parts of the Western Cape, through to a Big Five safari at the Eastern Cape’s Shamwari Game Reserve. South Africa is amazingly family-friendly, as this Garden Route safari will show. Explore Cape Town, Hermanus, and end off in the Gondwana Private Game Reserve. Here, kids can enjoy an exciting array of activities such as Big 5 game drives, mountain biking, hikes, and the popular Junior Ranger program (while you enjoy the Africology spa treatments).

How to do a family safari?

A family safari is most successful when everyone is engaged and enjoying themselves. Here are a few tips to ensure your safari goes smoothly:

  • Choose family-friendly destinations: Opt for safari destinations like Madikwe Game Reserve, Shamwari, or the Addo Elephant National Park, known for their family-centric approach. These parks offer tailored activities and accommodations, ensuring an engaging experience for children. Many family-friendly reserves will also have child-minding and babysitting services available, which can contribute to ensuring the vacation is relaxing for everyone. Book a babysitter for a parent-only candle-lit dinner, or even a sleep-out under the stars.
  • Educate and excite: Before the safari, share interesting facts about the wildlife they might encounter. Engage their curiosity by discussing the Big Five and the unique features of each animal. This knowledge enhances the excitement and appreciation for the safari experience.
  • Timing is key: Consider the timing of your safari game drives. Morning and late afternoon drives are optimal for wildlife sightings, and frequent sightings keep kids engaged. Plan breaks in between to accommodate the attention span of younger adventurers and prevent fatigue. Find a lodge with a pool and activities geared towards kids — it gets hot out in the bush, and a cooling swim is great for everyone. Traveling with teens? Nighttime drives can be the perfect way to keep teens engaged — it’s exciting and unusual, and night-prowling animals are just something else to experience in person.
  • Pack essentials for comfort: Ensure your safari vehicle is equipped with essentials like snacks, water, and comfortable seating. Pack sunscreen, hats, and insect repellent to protect against the elements. A comfortable child is a happy child on safari. Just remember that many parks have very bad cell service and internet coverage, so packing the iPad for a self-drive trip may not be as helpful as you think.
  • Involve them in the experience: Encourage kids to actively participate. Provide them with binoculars and a small camera to capture their perspective of the safari. Engaging them in the experience fosters a sense of ownership and excitement. Put together a bingo card of animals they might see while on game drives — kids love having something to tick off a list as much as we do!
  • Wildlife-themed activities: Extend the safari experience beyond game drives. Incorporate wildlife-themed activities like nature walks, junior ranger programs, or storytelling sessions around the campfire. These activities add a layer of fun and education to the vacation, making it one they’ll remember forever.
  • Be flexible with itinerary: Flexibility is key when traveling with kids. Be open to adjustments in the itinerary based on their interests and energy levels. A flexible approach ensures that the safari remains an enjoyable adventure for the entire family.

What is the best age to take a child on a safari?

The best age to take kids on safari will depend on your child. Young kids and babies might sleep for the bulk of a game drive, but an inconsolable baby or toddler is going to be hard for you to deal with when out in the bush. In general, we find that kids upwards of about four or five years old enjoy safaris, with their interest peaking as they get older. If you’re traveling with younger kids, try to keep game drives short — 1 to 2 hours at the most.

Another thing to note is that many game reserves will not allow children under six on group game drives. So if you’re traveling with young kids, make sure to book private game drives, so the kids can come along. Many South African reserves have plenty of rest stops, bird hides, and lookout points for a chance to stretch your legs. While you might not struggle to sit in the car for hours on end, a 15-minute stop at a viewpoint for a run around can make all the difference for kids.

Where is the best place to go for a family safari in Africa?

You really can’t go wrong with Addo Elephant Park, anywhere in the Kruger or Greater Kruger areas (such as the Sabi Sands ), and the many parks in the Western and Eastern Capes are incredible for kids. The Pilanesberg is right next door to Sun City, and a combination holiday of those two locations can be the ultimate vacation that suits all family members.

9 Best African Safari Lodges for Families

Giraffe Manor; Courtesy of Giraffe Manor

Can you imagine waking up to a brilliant sunrise over the savannah before heading out on a real African safari? Africa is a beautiful and diverse continent, and choices abound when it comes to game-viewing destinations for families.

If planning a trip there, you’ll want to select a location with easy access (close to an airport) and facilities designed with children in mind. You’ll want to stay in a Malaria-free region, too, so that your family doesn’t need to take preventative medication. You’ll want to confirm any age requirements before booking your safari accommodations, as well, since many lodges set an age limit on game drives. Still, many offer kids’ programs with age-appropriate activities so your little ones can get the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

1. Madikwe Safari Lodge

Located in the Malaria-free Madikwe Reserve in the North West Province of South Africa,  Madikwe Safari Lodge  gets top ratings from families for the accommodations and age-appropriate introductions to the African bush. The lodge also welcomes children as young as 2 years old.

Book one of two spacious family suites in the Lelapa Lodge that can accommodate up to two children under the ages of 10. The suites even have private pools that are covered with a safety net when you’re not using them.

Many of the lodge employees have children themselves so they know what kids like. But, the lodge will also take your kids’ food preferences into account. Just let them know what works best for your family and the staff will do their best to accommodate.

“Adult” safaris in open vehicles are available for those ages 6 and older, while “Family” safari drives—also in open vehicles—can accommodate children between the ages of 2 and 6. There are also a ton of fun activities for kids, like Bug CSI with a field ranger; painting and coloring; making pizzas in the lodge’s new pizza oven at the boma; impromptu soccer games; and viewing the night sky. Best of all, Madikwe Safari Lodge doesn’t charge for children 6 years or younger.

2. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Family safari vacations are an expensive proposition and the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is a no budget option. However, it’s a fabulous destination in Tanzania that is ideal for families with deep pockets. The lodge and its 77 guest rooms are tucked into the plains of the Central Serengeti.

East Africa is home to places your kids have read about in school—Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Victoria. The Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is located in the homelands of the Maasai people. Known originally as warriors, the indigenous population now survives as craftsman, farmers and ranchers. They wear distinctive brightly colored traditional clothing.

Most impressively, this lodge is smack dab in the middle of the path of the annual Great Migration of millions of animals, including wildebeests, antelopes and zebras; it takes place between July and September. You’ll also have no trouble viewing the Big Five here.

In addition to the Four Seasons’ top-notch service, families can take advantage of the Discovery Centre. It’s the gathering place where guests learn about the Maasai people and Africa’s history, and take part in programs that support local schools and wildlife conservation.

Finally, the Kijana Club is open to kids ages 8 to 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Here, children can work on arts and crafts projects, take part in environmental programs, learn about the animals of the Serengeti, or simple enjoy some downtime playing videogames or watching a movie. This is a nice option in case your kids get tired and don’t want to go on every single game drive during their stay.

3. Camp Jabulani

Magic happens every day at Camp Jabulani , located nearKruger National Park in South Africa’s Kapama Game Reserve. Here, your family will meet a herd of very special elephants that live on the property.

In 1997, a 4-month-old elephant was found abandoned. He was taken to the nearby Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, where he was hand-reared and named Jabulani. Later, in 2002, HESC launched a rescue mission for a dozen Zimbabwean elephants whose lives swung in the balance when they were tagged for meat after the war. When the elephants arrived in South Africa, it was clear that Jabulani would become part of their family. Camp Jabulani was created as both a home for the elephants and a place were visitors could come to spend time with them. Fifteen elephants now reside on the property.

This is a high-end Relais & Chateaux property, and staying at this all-inclusive lodge doesn’t come cheap. But the elephant-back safaris and time spent interacting with the herd is priceless. Kids must be 12 years or older to stay at the main lodge.

A few days at Camp Jabulani’s Zindoga Presidential Villa is a must for families who can afford it. This is a camp-within-a-camp, and includes two spacious suites connected by a living and dining area. There’s also a private heated plunge pool and roomy wooden deck for game viewing. You’ll have your own safari team, including a ranger (and private 4×4 vehicle), and a chef and butler. Children of any age are welcome at Zindoga.

Young guests are also invited to take part in the camp’s excellent children’s program, Team Tusker. Activities include storytelling, dress-up parties, arts and crafts projects, tracking tutorials, bird watching and bug catching, as well as survival basics.

4. Giraffe Manor

While not exactly a game lodge, Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya, is an incredibly child-friendly small hotel that is home to a herd of very playful Rothschild giraffe. You can even hand feed them at the kitchen table or at the front door of the hotel, which was originally built to resemble a Scottish hunting camp.

There are 10 bedrooms here, along with two suites with direct access to the courtyard, ideal for families. Rates are all-inclusive and even include transportation to and from the airport, along with admission to the AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife) Giraffe Centre on property. Children of all ages are welcome.

The hotel is just outside Nairobi and is surrounded by forest with views of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the south. The resort’s giraffe population shares its home with many different types of birds, warthogs and even the rare bushbuck.

5. King’s Camp

King’s Camp is one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to affordable luxury while on safari in South Africa. Located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, this is one of the only places in the world where you can see rare white lions in the wild. The “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo and black rhinoceros) and many other species are spotted here, pretty much on a daily basis.

This camp, which accepts children 6 years and older, harkens back to Colonial days and strikes the right balance of elegance and comfort. You can book one of 11 standalone thatched-roof bungalows, or Waterbuck Private Camp, a four-bedroom villa that comes with its own safari vehicle, ranger, butler and chef. The camp is roomy enough for a family of eight and is situated on a dry riverbank that offers fantastic game viewing. In-room decor includes beautiful and functional mosquito nets, claw-footed tubs, indoor and outdoor showers and a private patio decked out with a hammock. The rangers, trackers, camp managers, chef and staff create a family-like environment, and guests feel welcome the moment they arrive.

An on-property watering hole draws the attention of animals all day long, and guests either relax by the camp’s pool or in the shade of the thatched viewing deck to watch the elephants and impala stop for a drink or dip.

6. Luangwa Safari House

Here’s an option for reticent safari-goers: a private house in  Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park that offers the comforts of home. Luangwa Safari House , one of the accommodations offered by Robin Pope Safaris, can comfortably house up to eight people in four bedrooms and a spacious dining/living area. A chef, house manager and private guide (and vehicle) are all at your disposal. Meals and activities are carefully matched to your family’s interests, too.

There’s also a solid children’s program that extends from game drives to guided nature walks to trips to the Kawaza Village School and Chimpembele Wildlife Education Center. Back at the camp, kids can help collect eggs from the hen house and bake cookies in the kitchen with the chef. Children age 7 and up are welcome at Luangwa Safari House.

7. Richard’s Camp

In southwestern Kenya, look no further than family-owned and operated Richard’s Camp, where you’ll find traditional tented accommodations near the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Forest Camp sits on the edge of a riverine forest with grass plains stretching away from it. This means game drives easily sight elephants, big cats and herbivores like zebra and impala that graze the plains each day.

Six tented suites are available with either twin or double beds, and extra beds can be brought in for families sharing accommodations. The tents operate via solar power and offer 24-hour light, heated showers and flushing toilets. Meals are enjoyed outdoors or in the camp’s sitting area in front of a roaring fire. There is also a private camp on the property that can accommodate up to 10 individuals; this is ideal for families who want complete privacy. There are also additional lodgings at River Camp located about a half-hour away.

Game drives and escorted bush walks are the core of the experience here, but you can also go on a day trip to nearby Lake Victoria, visit a Maasai village, go on a hot air balloon safari, or flight-see over the gorgeous Masai Mara. The camp’s owners are raising their own child right on the property and can expertly answer questions about age-appropriate safari activities.

8. &Beyond’s WILDchild Program & Family Suites

&Beyond is an African safari specialist offering accommodations throughout southern and East Africa. The company recently devised its WILDchild program that’s available at all lodges. Rangers trained in working with children keep kids engaged throughout their vacation with special programs about wildlife, conservation, and African culture.

The company also installed new family suites at select lodges in South Africa and Tanzania. &Beyond recommends many lodges for families, including Kirkman’s Kamp, Phinda Zuka Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, and others.

&Beyond Kirkman’s Kamp is a favorite with families due to its location in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve next to Kruger National Park. It’s an easy 90-minute charter flight from Johannesburg and yet the animal viewing is exquisite. That’s because there are no boundary fences between the Reserve and National Park. Animals—and game drive participants—roam across that invisible line. It’s not unusual to see leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino here. This area also allows off-road driving so your guide will get you as close to the wildlife as possible.

Photo Courtesy of Shamwari Riverdene Lodge

9. Shamwari Riverdene Lodge

The Riverdene Lodge in the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape is an ideal spot for your family’s first safari adventure. Located in Port Elizabeth, in a Malaria-free area, the lodges here—Riverdene in particular—happily welcome families with children as young as 4 (although kids must be older in order to go on a game drive).

There is so much to do here beyond normal game drives, including visits to the Born Free Foundation Big Cat Rescue Center that houses lions and leopard that have been saved from circuses and zoos, and the Shamwari Wildlife Hospital that nurses wounded wild animals back to health before releasing them back into the wild.

Riverdene Lodge features nine interconnecting, air-conditioned rooms, satellite television, a lounge area, private balconies leading to the garden and BBQ area, and a swimming pool. An onsite children’s coordinator is on hand to suggest activities custom-tailored for your family’s unique interests.

Pride of lion in Kruger National Park

Family vacations & safaris in South Africa

  • Kruger National Park

By Audley South Africa specialist Toby

Standing on the shoreline of Walker Bay, my seven-year-old daughter stared at the ocean, open-mouthed. A pod of ten southern right whales were surfacing barely a stone’s throw away. If my experiences are anything to go by, it’s occasions like this that make South Africa so rewarding for a family vacation.

When I look back on trips I’ve taken with my family in South Africa, some of our most enjoyable moments were on the open road. There’s a sense of freedom driving out of Cape Town, with Table Mountain looming behind you, and the rugged coastline ahead. You can drive onward to copper sand beaches, countryside speckled with rare wildflowers and shaped by mountain ranges, and to malaria-free national parks for safari.

Recommended experiences for families in South Africa

Explore cape town, table mountain and robben island.

Penguins on Boulders Beach just outside Cape Town

Nestled between striking Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Town has an endearing charm that stems partly from its superb natural setting and partly from its vibrant and multicultural spirit.

From the city flea markets to the great beaches and amazing wildlife, there's lots for families to see and do. One great way to explore is on a Cape Town Eats gourmet walking tour, where you'll experience the ethnic diversity of the city through its food, tasting unusual dishes — such as spicy bunny chow and the moussaka-like bobotie — as you go and chatting to the people who make them.

Wherever you go, Table Mountain  dominates the view. The cable car is a great way to reach the top and on a clear day the views from the summit stretch right down over the coast. You can hike along a network of walking trails with rock hyrax, guinea pig-like creatures, scurrying around you.

The story boards on Robben Island

For older children a trip to  Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, offers a chance to learn about the history of apartheid. It's an enjoyable boat trip followed by a tour of the island from one of the former inmates.

Another impressive activity is to take a tour down the  Cape Peninsula  where you'll see lots of African penguins at Boulders Beach and the dramatic seascape at Cape Point. You can also go kayaking, take a cycle tour of the city or just relax on the beach at Camps Bay.

Family-friendly hotels in Cape Town

The Vineyard Hotel is on the outskirts of Cape Town

Many families stay in the V&A Waterfront area, which has lots of good hotels, shops and restaurants. There are some fantastic luxury hotels like Cape Grace , but for families I think the Waterfront Village is a better option. It has a choice of self-catering apartments, is right on the waterfront and they'll even pre-stock the fridge for you.

Another good, if less obvious, area for families to stay in is on the other side of Table Mountain, where upmarket suburbs like Newlands and Constantia  are lush and green, and relaxed and welcoming to stroll around. Hotels such as The Vineyard combine being close to the city with natural surroundings and plenty of space.

Go whale watching in Hermanus

Southern right whale close to the shore in Hermanus

A beautiful town renowned for its whale watching , Hermanus overlooks Walker Bay, a deep inlet that attracts southern right whales between June and November. The whales swim very close to the shore here, and if you have younger children you can just walk along the cliffs and watch them gliding through the water below you. Older children will enjoy a boat trip out into the bay where you'll get so close you'll feel the spray off the whales.

Hermanus also has great beaches, some of them with little lagoons and natural swimming pools. I'd recommend at least two nights here to have time to enjoy it all. It's about an hour and a half's drive from Cape Town along the rugged Atlantic coastline and there's a good choice of hotels in the area.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve makes a great base for families. It's a beautiful ecolodge with big, detached family rooms set in a milkwood forest. You get a real sense of seclusion here and children are very well taken care of with farm trips, pony rides and lots of interaction with the local village including football matches and botany lessons.

Explore the Garden Route

Lookout Beach in Plettenberg Bay

Some of South Africa's most beautiful coastline, the Garden Route, stretches for 185 miles (300 km) between Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay , passing vast stretches of white sands, lagoons, lakes, indigenous forest, unusual rock formations and rolling hills en route. It's an incredibly scenic area with lots of pretty towns, animal sanctuaries, walking trails and outdoor activities.

Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre near Plettenberg Bay is worth a visit to learn about local wild cat conservation efforts while the Tsitsikamma Forest is a wonderful place for children with plenty of outdoor activities such as bungee jumping and zip-lining, as well as lots of wildlife. You can take an ocean safari and visit a huge seal colony and enjoy the sight of dolphins popping up alongside the boat on the way.

Consider staying at either Emily Moon River Lodge or Hog Hollow Country Lodge , both of which offer wonderful views and excellent service and facilities for families. Hog Hollow in particular has loads of monkeys in the grounds and you'll be given a giant water gun with your breakfast just to keep them from stealing your food.

From Hermanus it's about a five-hour drive to Mossel Bay, so it's worth considering breaking your journey with an overnight stay in Rothman Manor in Swellendam .

Family safaris in South Africa

Elephant are one of the Big Five you can see in the Eastern Cape

The malaria-free Eastern Cape  makes the ideal safari destination for families with Big Five wildlife spotting and a choice of game reserves. The landscape here makes the reserves some of the most scenic in South Africa with lush vegetation and high hills offering superb views over the plains below. You'll have the chance to see lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, giraffe and zebra as well as a wide variety of antelope.

Typically, you'll go on two game drives a day, one in the early morning and one in the late afternoon. You'll get amazingly close to the animals. One morning, the rangers took my group to see a family of lion that had made a kill the night before and were lying around with full bellies. We got quite close and just watched them, there must have been eight lion. Then we heard the call of another lion just before the eldest son of the family padded softly around our vehicle and joined the group. His younger brothers and sisters jumped up to play with him.

The rangers are very good at adapting activities for a young audience and I suggest spending three nights on safari in Shamwari , Kwandwe or Amakhala . Shamwari, for example, has two lodges — Sarili and Riverdene — specifically designed for families. Sarili is bright, modern and minimalist, and a better option for older children. Riverdene offers lodge rooms in old farmhouses and is a better choice for younger children as it’s completely fenced in.

It's a three to four-hour drive from the Garden Route to the Eastern Cape game parks, with about 45 minutes of off-road driving to reach your lodge once you turn from the main road.

Less obvious highlights for families in South Africa

Discover the madikwe game reserve.

Rhino in the Madikwe Game Reserve

Vast savannah plains dotted with rocky kopjes (outcrops) stretch across the Madikwe Game Reserve on the border with Botswana . It's a remote park that offers a more off-the-beaten-track safari experience yet still remains malaria-free. Rhino, leopard, lion, buffalo and elephant can all be seen as well as wild dog, rare predators famed for their hunting techniques.

Explore the KwaZulu-Natal region

The battlefield site of Isandlwana in KwaZulu-Natal

If you’re planning a trip to South Africa with older children who are interested in being more active and can handle longer drives, you should consider a trip to the KwaZulu-Natal region  in South Africa’s northeast.

It's an area steeped in history, home to the Anglo-Zulu battlefields , untouched wilderness, and beautiful game reserves such as Phinda and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi . That’s as well as the wetlands, dramatic coastline, remote lodges and the Drakensberg Mountains with their ridges of incisor-shaped peaks.

Visit the Cape Floral Kingdom

Red hot pokers (torch lilies) flowers in the Western Cape Province

South Africa's Western and Eastern Capes encompass one of just six floral kingdoms in the world and feature many rare and endemic species. Although your children may not be avid botanists, the transformation of the desert here in August and September is so dramatic it will catch the attention of even the smallest child.

Eating with your family in South Africa

A traditional braai at Bushmans Kloof, Western Cape

South Africa is the best country I've ever been to for food. Eating out here combines high quality with great variety, and there are always plenty of international options that will your children happy. Local dishes are generally meat focused with the traditional South African braai, or barbecue, a popular option.

In the bush you'll find grilled kudu and springbok and even crocodile, while on the coast great fish and seafood are the mainstay of menus. Bobotie, a baked dish of spiced minced beef or lamb with a creamy egg-based topping, is a really popular local speciality to look out for.

Best time to visit South Africa with your family

Ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn, on the Garden Route

The South African spring, between September and November, is a great time to visit. The deserts are in bloom and lots of whales congregate in Walker Bay, which makes a half-term break in October well worth considering. March, April and early May are also good months to travel to South Africa, making an Easter visit a good option. Christmas is also a good time to visit, but you'll need to book well in advance — we advise at least a year.

Practicalities of visiting South Africa with children

  • The regions of South Africa we recommend on this trip are all malaria-free, but we would advise you to discuss the latest requirements for travel with a doctor. Your doctor is also likely to tell you to make sure your tetanus and polio shots are up to date and that you have a hepatitis A vaccination.
  • Parents of under 18s must carry their original, unabridged birth certificate to enter the country.
  • Game drives can last up to three hours and, for safety reasons, children need to remain seated, particularly when game is spotted. Children prone to wriggling might find this too much sitting in one spot.

Scenic and beautiful, Cape Town offers something for every family: rugged mountains, lush gardens, and a range of vibrant markets, shops, restaurants and activities. Your boutique hotel in the City Bowl, a scenic area ringed by mountains, is the perfect base for your family’s time exploring this iconic metropolis.

Cape Point Peninsula and Penguins

Search for penguins and animals as you leave the city behind and head out for a day of exploration with your private guide. Visit the seals in the quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay. Stop for some treats at a local bakery, enjoy a hot chocolate, and listen to a few of the local shark stories or try your hand at fishing.

Heading back out away from town, discover a local beach that is home to penguins. Dip your feet in the sea water and try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking to get an up-close look at these fascinating little creatures.

From there, continue on to Cape Point to seek out the Cape 5: ostriches, baboons, mountain zebra, bontebok, and tortoises. Wander along hiking trails through indigenous fynbos, past hidden coves and rocky beaches. Learn about the shipwrecks on this coastline, keeping an eye out for lost treasure, then head up the funicular or take a gentle hike to the Cape Point Lighthouse, for an incredible panoramic view over the ocean. Take the scenic return drive back to the city, stopping along the way at a local farm village for homemade ice cream.

Table Mountain and City Tour

Top view of the Atlantic Ocean. National Park Table Mountain, South Africa, Cape Town

See all of Cape Town at your feet from the top of Table Mountain. Take a scenic cable car ride to the top, as the vistas of the city and surrounding ocean are slowly revealed. At the top, explore the mountain top and look for dassie (local rock rabbits), then visit a cafe for a well-earned hot chocolate and delicious local baked goods.

Returning to sea level, you have the option to hop on bikes and cycle along the Sea Point Promenade. Explore the coast, letting the kids lead the way with their own interactive maps. Stop at art installations en route, and hear the story of Nelson Mandela while gazing out toward Robben Island, where he spent so many years imprisoned. Staying safe and off road, head into Green Point Park for a fun look at the unique Cape flora and fauna before lunch.

After lunch, explore the city’s uplifting urban art projects, District Six and interactive sites like the Apartheid Benches, which bring to life the history which has shaped South Africa. This is terrific for teens and older children. Families with younger kids can head to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens for an afternoon of exploration within the estate. Follow a treasure map along tree-top canopy walkways and prehistoric cycad gardens. Jump over steppingstones, climb Van Riebeek’s historic hedge, and barrel down lawns in search of Claud the Clawless Otter.

End the day at the beach with a private picnic, and sip a sundowner with your feet in the sand while the kids play beach games with their energetic guide.

Family and Kid-Friendly Safaris

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris.

Team Member Headshot

By Megan Warrington

Safari Travel Planner

In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, finding opportunities to truly connect with family has become increasingly rare. A family safari emerges as a serene oasis, offering families a chance to step away from the digital clutter and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. Going on a family safari tour is not just a vacation; it’s an immersive experience that combines the thrill of adventure with the invaluable lessons only nature can teach.

Africa’s diverse landscapes serve as the backdrop for a variety of family-oriented safaris. Imagine witnessing the grandeur of the wildebeest migration across the plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara or coming face-to-face with the gentle giants of the forest during a gorilla trekking expedition in Uganda. Each kid-friendly safari is designed to provide thrilling encounters that captivate the young and the old alike.

The experiences on a family safari extend far beyond the wildlife sightings. It’s about the shared moments of discovery and wonder, from the exhilaration of spotting a pride of lions during a game drive to the simple joy of listening to stories around a crackling campfire under a canopy of stars. These moments, free from the distractions of everyday life, allow families to forge deeper bonds with one another.

The Best Destinations for a Family-Friendly African Safari

family safaris south africa

TripSavvy / Jess Macdonald

Going on a family safari will be one of the most rewarding and exciting vacations you'll ever take. However, traveling on a shoestring is more difficult when you have kids in tow and as such, your African adventure is unlikely to be cheap. Because of this, it's something you may only do once - so choosing the best destination and itinerary possible is important. In this article, we take a look at Africa's most family-friendly countries along with itineraries and lodges that cater specifically to children.

Choosing Your Destination

The first step to planning any safari is deciding where you want to go. If you're traveling with children, there are several things you need to consider. Safety is always the top priority for parents, so a politically stable country with access to decent medical care in case of an emergency is a good idea. The fewer vaccinations required the better, while malaria-free destinations win top marks for obvious reasons.

Cost is another factor when you have more people to pay for, so choose a country with reasonable accommodation and tour prices. Destinations that lend themselves well to self-drive safaris are another great choice for families on a budget and give you the benefit of being flexible with your travel plans. For all of these reasons, we recommend Southern African nations like South Africa, Namibia and Botswana over the iconic safari destinations of East Africa .

South Africa for Families

With its first world infrastructure and world-class national parks, South Africa is the obvious choice for a family safari. There are game-viewing destinations for every budget, ranging from exclusive private reserves like Shamwari and Ulusaba to national parks like Kruger and Addo . The latter are a great option for families on a budget, as they allow self-driving and offer affordable accommodation in the form of campsites and self-catering chalets.

Self-driving is an excellent option for families, giving you the flexibility to stop whenever you like, cut game drives short if your kids get tired and deal with tantrums without worrying about other guests. South Africa is made for independent exploration, with good roads and car rental services in every big city. Many South African game parks are malaria-free and you don't have to worry about other tropical diseases like yellow fever or Zika virus.

Finally, there's more to South Africa than its incredible game reserves. If a full two weeks of wildlife-viewing sounds like a stretch for your kids, there are countless other activities for children . Consider township tours in Joburg, breathtaking Cape Town beaches, whale-watching off Hermanus or ostrich-riding and caving trips near Oudtshoorn.

Recommended itineraries: Best of South Africa for Families , Cape & Kruger Family Holiday , The Ultimate South Africa for Families

Recommended lodges: The Motse, Tswalu Kalahari, Ant's Nest, Waterberg

Namibia for Families

Namibia offers many of the same benefits as South Africa. With the Namibian dollar pegged to the South African rand, you can expect to pay similarly low prices for accommodation, park fees, fuel and day-to-day living. Though they're often gravel instead of tarmac, the roads are exceptionally well-maintained and many travelers claim that they feel safer in Namibia than anywhere else on the continent. Much of the country is malaria-free (except for the magnificent Caprivi Strip ).

Namibia's most famous national park, Etosha, is one of the best wildlife-viewing destinations in Southern Africa with almost guaranteed rhino sightings. In between game drives, there are plenty of other attractions to keep kids interested, from dune surfing in the Namib Desert to visiting traditional Himba villages in Damaraland and exploring Sossusvlei's otherworldly landscapes. Bear in mind that Namibia is a huge country and kids will need to be able to cope with long journeys.

Recommended itineraries: Namibia Family Camping Safari , Northern Namibia for Families , Namibia Self-Drive Family Safari

Recommended lodges: Sossusvlei Desert Lodge , Mushara Bush Camp

Botswana for Families

Botswana is another excellent option for a family safari. It offers the perfect balance of safety and adventure, with good infrastructure, a stable government and some of the most rewarding game parks on the continent. It's probably best for families with a bigger budget, however, because it's more geared for fly-in safaris than self-drive itineraries, especially if you want to visit the Okavango Delta (and trust us, you do). You'll also need to fork out for malaria prophylactics , the most child-friendly of which are expensive.

The need to take malaria medication is one reason why Botswana is suited to slightly older kids. Older kids will also be able to enjoy walking safaris and traditional canoe or mokoro trips which are two of the country's best experiences. Game parks like Chobe , Moremi, Kgalagadi and Savuti are arguably better for wildlife-viewing than those of Namibia or South Africa, but bear in mind that there are fewer alternative activities for kids that are easily bored. Unlike in the other two countries, you can't divide your time between the bush and the beach.

Recommended itineraries: Classic Botswana Family Safari , Northern Botswana Family Explorer Safari , Botswana Family Safari Adventure

Recommended lodges: Footsteps Camp , &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Delta Lodge

During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. Nelson Mandela was one of them. Those imprisoned on the Island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison 'hell-hole' into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation. Let's face it, theme parks are great but can't compete with a family safari in Africa. Wouldn't you love to give your kids a chance to form lasting memories watching actual wildlife on exciting adventures in the African bush? Imagine their wide-eyed wonder as a giraffe stretches its neck across the jeep, or the squeals of delight when a playful troop of monkeys swings through the trees.

An African safari isn't just for adults anymore! Sure, the thought of long journeys and limited Wi-Fi might have you picturing tantrums instead of zebras. But fear not, intrepid parents! Your children will gain a newfound respect for nature, a curiosity about the world, and maybe even a lifelong love of wildlife documentaries (goodbye to endless cartoons!). We bring you 11 of the best places in Africa to embark on a family safari designed to keep your little adventurers engaged and enthralled!

A ride in one of the hot air balloons is also a must for getting a special perspective of the beautiful Masai Mara region. They also are in prime position for wildlife spotting during the Great Wildebeest Migration from July to September each year.

Elsa’s Kopje

Situated in Meru National Park, Elsa’s Kopje gives you access to some truly exquisite nature. The park has its own unique Rhino Sanctuary as just one option for some fantastic game drive experiences. You can also go on guided walks, fish in the river, eat canapés, swim in the pool or relax at the spa. The site is also very strongly connected to the nearby Tharaka community and has a number of options to get involved and experience the real Africa.

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge really understands the importance of quality family time. They have a number of stunning family rooms, special children’s menus, babysitting and entertainment to keep the kids (and parents) jumping with excitement their entire stay. You’ll get fantastic views of the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro from the lodge. You can take personalized nature walks or game drives. And there’s even a special cultural display area to introduce you all to the Maasai culture. Following this, kids are provided options for ‘edutainment’ – they can make Maasai beadwork, learn the tricks of tracking and even uncover the secrets of the Maasai warrior-hood. With the kids occupied, parents can also find time to indulge in some luxurious spa pampering.

Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor guarantees you an animal encounter that simply cannot be duplicated on the savannah – or anywhere else in the world, for that matter. The manor is a stately 1930s building set on private land in Nairobi. The highlight? A herd of Rothschild giraffes who are quite accustomed to poking their gangly necks through the windows in the morning and evening in search of a tasty treat. The two suites sleep two adults and up to three children and all meals are included during your stay.

Lion World Travel: The Best of Cape Town & Botswana

African safari vacation

Courtesy of Lion World Travel

Length: 10 days Starting price: $4,899

As the trip name implies, the 10-day Best of Cape Town & Botswana vacation package from longtime safari operator Lion World Travel combines a few days of sightseeing in Cape Town, South Africa – where you'll visit the iconic Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula – with a classic safari in Botswana. During the latter half of the itinerary, visitors will explore Botswana's Okavango Delta, home to cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos and more; you'll have the option of a helicopter flight to spot wildlife from above for an extra fee. Then, you'll visit Chobe National Park, which is believed to have the world's largest African elephant population.

Prices start at $4,899 per person based on double occupancy. Rates cover game drives; many of your meals; and stays in a four-star hotel in Cape Town as well as luxury tents in Botswana. You'll need to pay an extra charge for the flights within the tour (from Cape Town to Botswana and from Botswana to Johannesburg ).

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day trip through the country's sprawling game reserves and national parks is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for spotting elephants – before moving on to the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals like leopards, rhinos, hippos and more. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife such as zebras and buffalo on the savannah as well as the ethereal white salt pans from a former lake.

You'll stay in upscale lodges and camps within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person and varies by time of year), but international flights to get to Botswana are excluded.

Length: Eight days Starting price: About $4,160 for self-drive option

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some local history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush & Beach Safari. With an itinerary focused on the east of South Africa, you'll start off visiting some of the country's historic sites from the Boer wars, including locations where local Zulu warriors defeated the British, before moving on to Phinda Private Game Reserve. This park doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the "big five" without too many crowds.

The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Kayaking and walks through coastal forests are other activities on offer here. As far as safaris go, this one is a somewhat more affordable option, starting at about $4,160 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

This safari includes a wildlife spotting boat cruise on the Chobe River as well.

The price starts at $1,015 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and well-rated lodging in Victoria Falls. Travelers will need to pay for their own travel to Victoria Falls. Expert Africa: Big Cat Fly-in Safari

Lewa Safari Camp animal sightings with Expert Africa.

Length: Nine days Starting price: $5,010

Expert Africa offers safaris and other tours in a host of African countries. For a relatively classic tour, consider the Big Cat Fly-in Safari. It offers two different looks at Kenya's stellar wildlife. Firstly, you'll fly north for four nights at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a sanctuary that channels all its profits into protecting the wildlife in its roughly 100-square-mile reserve. You'll stay in classic tented rooms and enjoy three-course dinners, with the option of going on horse- or camelback safaris for an extra fee.

Despite the tour name, you're most likely to see elephants, giraffes, zebras and rhinos here. In fact, you're more likely to see big cats at the tour's second stop, when you fly south to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The tour company reports a high success rate for travelers spotting lions (and a decent chance of spotting leopards or cheetahs too). Here, you'll spend four days in upscale tents and have the option of soaring over the plains in a hot air balloon. The tour starts at $5,010 for eight nights, with all transport within Kenya included – although Expert Africa customizes most of its tours, so you can likely adjust your safari to your preferences.

Volcanoes Safari: 7 Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safari

The Deluxe Room at Bwindi Lodge from Volcanoes Safaris.

Length: Seven days Starting price: $8,430

If you're looking to spot some great apes, Volcanoes Safari focuses exclusively on primate tours within Rwanda and Uganda – and with partnerships with the Jane Goodall Institute and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, they're responsible too. One of its signature tours, this seven-day itinerary kicks off in Uganda, taking travelers to the famed Kyambura Gorge to spot chimpanzee communities, as well as on a trek through the Bwindi Forest to look for gorillas.

But it's not all about monkeys: The tour also includes chances to see lions on the Ugandan plains and to meet locals engaging in cooperative work raising bees and roasting coffee. Along the way, guests stay in stylish lodges with views of Uganda's mountains and forests. The tour starts at $8,430 per person based on double occupancy in the low season, with all meals included.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Although COVID-19 vaccination requirements no longer exist, it's not uncommon for countries to require you to be vaccinated against illnesses such as yellow fever before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

For many destinations, there are a number of other vaccinations that aren't mandatory but are still recommended, such as for cholera or rabies. Consult with a doctor and ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor about potentially bringing anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of July 2024:

Botswana: If you have recently visited or transited through a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa as well as Central and South America. Consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days per year without a visa.

Kenya: Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places where yellow fever is endemic to be vaccinated against it. The CDC recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an eVisa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no less than two weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less per year.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50 for a single entry or $70 for multiple entries, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission, including transits of 12 hours or longer in such countries. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country. The vaccine should be administered 10 days or more before arrival

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 or a multiple-entry, one-year visa for $100. Be sure to print a copy of the approval (called a "grant notice") to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a single-entry visa on arrival in most cases, although the Tanzanian government still recommends the advance online application. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure. The processing time is around seven days, but the Ugandan government recommends applying 30 days before you travel; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. A single-entry visa costs $50. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk, including long transits (12 hours or more) through such countries. Visas are not required for U.S. citizens visiting Zambia. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks require a vaccine against this illness. This includes long transit stopovers of 12 hours or more.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Travel + Leisure Readers’ 20 Favorite Safari Lodges and Safari Outfitters in Africa of 2024

Readers voted for their favorite African lodges and safari outfitters in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2024.

family safaris south africa

How Voting Works

What readers loved about africa safari lodges, safari lodges winner, safari lodges full list, what readers loved about africa safari outfitters, safari outfitters winner, safari outfitters full list.

Travel + Leisure readers’ votes this year proved that people are essential to the best safari experience, in regards to both lodges and outfitters. From warm, welcoming on-the-ground staff to a reliable and knowledgeable travel specialist pulling all the trip details together, readers highlighted how a great team can make all the difference — in addition to epic wildlife sightings and transportive accommodations.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Staff/guides
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Accommodations

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

South Africa was the most popular country this year, with three lodges in the top ten. Coming in at No. 1, Monwana Game Lodge is a solid all-rounder, overlooking a waterhole in a wildlife-rich safari reserve, supported by a compassionate team.

Asilia Namiri Plains (No. 2) in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park garnered plenty of praise for its team, too. “The staff were kind and made this a trip of a lifetime,” wrote one reader. The tents were also a highlight: “The rooms were huge, comfortable, and gorgeous, and the outdoor tub overlooking the Serengeti was unbeatable.”

But it wasn’t only lodges in famous Big Five destinations that T+L readers loved. Uganda’s Mount Gahinga Lodge, Volcanoes Safaris (No. 4) with direct access to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Kyambura Gorge, Volcanoes Safaris (No. 6) — where chimpanzee trekking is the big draw — reveals the popularity of primate safaris.

Monwana Game Lodge: Thornybush Nature Reserve, South Africa

In Thornybush Nature Reserve — part of South Africa’s Greater Kruger area, one of the best regions in Africa for Big Five sightings — Monwana Game Lodge is located by a waterhole frequented by elephants, lions, and other key wildlife. The lodge was the top choice for T+L readers this year, with one reporting “an amazing experience throughout, from staff to game viewing.” With just six suites, and a private residence for up to five guests, Monwana is ideal for honeymooners or families with kids over age 10. As well as twice-daily game drives, guests can go on bush walks, take a massage at the spa, or head out after dark for stargazing.

T+L readers valued expert teams with enthusiasm and reliability in their favorite safari outfitters this year.

2024’s No. 1 winner — Alluring Africa — scored perfect marks, making it readers’ top choice for the second year in a row.  Vegas-based Dazzle Africa (No. 2) is also no stranger to high scores from T+L readers, one of whom said they’d discovered the Zambia specialist through our 2021 World’s Best Awards — after an initial call with a “helpful and committed” trip planner, they “didn’t need to look any further.”

South Africa-based Go2Africa (No. 9) earned praise for going above and beyond — for example, one reader reported their coordinator “got us into Kenya’s Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage after they had sold out.” The word “dream” came up repeatedly as guests described their Go2Africa vacation — “We can't wait to plan another dream trip to Africa!” one concluded.

Alluring Africa

Last year’s winner retained the top spot for 2024, with a perfect score of 100 — up from 99.21 in 2023. Alluring Africa is a Florida-based agency, specializing in travel to Africa and the Middle East. The type of experiences they book for their clients include tracking desert rhinos in Namibia, watching wildebeests’ dramatic Great Migration in Tanzania and Kenya, and meeting mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. Safari tourist crushed to death by elephants after leaving car ‘for a close-up’

African Elephants in Pilanesberg Nature Reserve walking, with Elephant Calf

A man has been crushed to death by a herd of adult elephants after he got out of a car to take photos of them.

The Spanish tourist, 43, was warned not to leave the car by his three other passengers who were not harmed on Sunday at the Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa .

A 3.5 ton adult female protecting her young charged towards the man before two other adult elephants joined in with the chase.

He ran back but was overtaken by the elephants who completely crushed him within 30 seconds.

The incident happened in front of his fiancé and all that was left was his body crushed into the earth and his blood-soaked clothing.

A North-West Parks & Tourism Board spokesperson said: ‘The elephants moved away immediately from the scene without any aggression towards the nearby vehicles and disappeared in the bushes.

‘Park officials were alerted and immediately rushed to the scene to aid the affected persons and secure the scene and assist with the investigation.

‘Statements by witnesses who observed the whole incident further suggest the female elephant that charged and attacked might have done so to protect the herd and young ones.’

The acting conservation chief for the park Pieter Nel said the case had been handed over to police.

He said: ‘The Board is very saddened by this tragic accident and would like to express their sincere condolences to the deceased’s next of kin and friends.’

A park ranger who wished to stay anonymous said: ‘It was a very stupid thing to do and the tourist was literally shouted at to get back in his car but wanted to get photographs of the herd.

‘He had walked too far away off the road to be able to make it back to the car in time when he charged. His friends were in a hysterical state and needed immediate expert counselling.

‘There was not much left to identify. The victim had been trampled into the ground. Sadly despite all the warnings people still get out to take photos but most are lucky enough to get away with it.

‘The herd were not to blame and were acting entirely as normal when they felt a threat to their young. Indeed they passed right past the car with the three of his friends in when they left.’

This is not the first time somebody has been killed by an elephant during an African safari.

An American woman was killed when an elephant charged at a truck she was in.

The killing happened at the Kafue National Park in Zambia in April and the horrible moment was filmed on a 45-second video.

The lone five-ton bull elephant can be seen in the distance running towards the vehicle before the unthinkable happens.

Just last month another tourist from America was trampled to death after she was thrown out of her vehicle by an elephant.

Juliana Gle Tourneau, 64, was watching the elephants in Zambia when one of them attacked the vehicle.

During the time Zambian officials warned tourists to be wary of observing wildlife like elephants.

In countries like Zambia and South Africa elephant populations are on the rise and they come into closer contact with humans as they search for food.

The main reason an elephant will attack a human on a safari is if humans get too close to them when they are guarding their babies.

Other reasons elephants could attack include provocation or perceived threat, habitat encroachment and captivity related issues.

Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day.
