• GPS Directions to Wailua Marina State Park: 3-5971 Kuhio Highway, Kapaa, HI 96746 Smith’s Tropical Paradise and the Fern Grotto tour are located in the Wailua Marina State Park on the east side of the Kauai. Once you’ve turned off the highway, just follow the drive all the way back to the parking area. From the North (Hanalei, Princeville, Kapaa): Take Hwy. 56 South through Kapaa to the Wailua River. Go past Kuamoo road, over the river, and take the first right into the Wailua Marina State Park. From the South (Waimea, Poipu, Lihue): Take Hwy. 56 North from the Lihue airport. A mile after the Wailua Golf Course, watch for Marina signs and the beach on the right. Just before crossing the Wailua River bridge, turn left into the Wailua Marina State Park.

This cruise was great with our 18 month old. The boats are wide and spacious and have great visibility on any seat. We enjoyed the commentary and singing while we rode -- and barely noticed the rain. The short walk t ... o the fern grotto was lovely and lush. Not to mention the grotto itself. We learned more about the traditions of the place and watch a Hula performance of a love song. The guides did not rush us through the walk and were very warm and friendly. Recommend -- especially if you have young children and need something fun to do with them. My son loved the boat ride!

The cruise was very relaxing and informative about the hawaiian culture as you make your way to the fern grotto thru some of the most beautiful views, you also will enjoy some beautiful singing and dancing as you cruise ... to a beautiful waterfalls.

• ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls –  This 151-foot-tall, 40-foot-wide waterfall is the most accessible major waterfalls on Kauai.  ʻŌpaekaʻa” means “rolling shrimp,” which were once abundant in the stream.

Wailua River Cruise & Fern Grotto Tour

Enjoy a tranquil boat cruise on Kauai’s Wailua River, the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. The river is fed by Mt. Wai'ale'ale, one of the wettest spots in the world. During the two-mile journey upstream you’ll hear songs and stories of the old Hawaii. You can also participate in a hula lesson.

The spacious, open-air boat provides excellent views from either side. Beautiful mangrove trees line the river’s banks. The highlight of the tour is Fern Grotto, a fern-covered lava cave. Once you reach the Fern Grotto landing, you’ll enjoy a short nature walk through a beautiful rainforest to the lush Fern Grotto.

The grotto is one of Kauai’s geological wonders. Formed millions of years ago, colorful tropical plants grow all over the cave, which is also known for its excellent interior acoustics.

Garden Stroll optional add-on: If you are not planning on attending Smith's Luau after your Wailur River boat tour, but still would like to see the amazing garden grounds, you can purchase a Garden Stroll admission ticket. The Tropical Paradise is open daily from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. (If you are attending the luau, you will have time to walk through the garden after you check in for the luau.)

FERN GROTTO RIVER BOAT

During the two mile river journey, you’ll hear songs and stories of ancient Hawaii — like the King’s Highway, sacred Mount Kapu, and the First Hau Tree.

Sharing Songs and Legends of the Wailua River Valley is a Family Tradition. In 1946 the Smith’s started their family business with a small rowboat and a borrowed outboard motor. Four generations later, they continue Grandpa’s tradition of sharing their love of Kauai and its rich cultural heritage.

The spacious, open-air boats provide excellent views from either side during the trip upstream.  In addition, light Hawaiian entertainment is provided.

The Wailua River is known as “the only navigable river” in all Hawaii. The river’s fresh water pours down from Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, one of the wettest spots on the planet. Lands along the river were the sacred capital of ancient Kauai and the birthplace of the island’s ali‘i, or royalty.

At the Fern Grotto landing, you’ll enjoy a short nature walk through the rainforest to the lush Fern Grotto- a geological wonder of Kauai. Ferns grow upside down from the roof of the grotto, which was formed millions of years ago. Native Hawaiian plants and colorful exotic tropical plants provide a rain-forest atmosphere.

Shore Excursion: Waimea Canyon, Wailua River & Fern Grotto Tour

This Kauai excursion combines a visit to Waimea Canyon, “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and a scenic ride up the Wailua River to the unique Fern Grotto where the ferns actually grow upside down.

Your day begins with a drive to Waimea Canyon. From your lookout at 3,400 feet you’ll experience an unsurpassed view of the 2,857 foot deep canyon and the surrounding countryside. The canyon’s size combined with the red and browns of exposed volcanic rock and the blues and greens of lush tropical vegetation truly creates a magnificent sight.

After leaving Waimea Canyon, stop at a lava rock cropping known as the “Spouting Horn”. A natural salt water geyser that sprays plumes high into the air, which occurs when the surf is washed into a lava tube and sucked up through a hole in the coastal rock. The geyser may reach up as much as 50 feet depending on the surf that day, and provides photographers with an added challenge in capturing one of Poipu’s most scenic coastal shots.

Then, proceed to the picturesque Wailua River where you’ll board your river boat for a delightful cruise to the Fern Grotto. The grotto forms a natural amphitheater and provides excellent acoustics for the Hawaiian chorus to serenade you with the Hawaiian Wedding Song. It’s quite the romantic ending to your day exploring Kauai! The pathways at the Fern Grotto may be slippery, so please dress accordingly for this Hawaii cruise excursion.

Recent flooding in Wailua caused us to cancel our family’s luau for a few weeks. After assessing the work needed, we are planning to reopen the luau on May 6th. Online guest reservations will be available shortly.

THE WAILUA RIVER TOURS are operating on the normal schedule ~ Monday through Friday, with departures at 9:30am, 11am, 2pm and 3:30pm.

• For guests staying at a North Shore or Princeville hotel, the meeting point is at the Outrigger Waipouli Hotel in Kapa'a. Parking is available at the municipal parking lot near the Outrigger Waipouli Hotel. The tour times provided reflect the start and end of the tour, but not your exact pickup location and pickup time. Whether or not you've provided your hotel/lodging at the time of booking, you are required to contact the tour provider no less than (2) days prior to your tour date to receive your exact pickup time and location. The tour provider will advise you of the specific area at the hotel/lodging you should wait; for example, "at the front entrance." Please be there at least 5 minutes before your pickup time. Please allow a 10-15 minute grace period, as the driver will be picking up other guests in your area. If your hotel/lodging is not included on our pickup schedule, you'll be advised to meet at nearby location. Please note that we are prohibited by certain properties to pick up non-hotel guests and we do not pick-up at private properties such as Airbnb’s and residential areas.

The river boat crew did an amazing job navigating the impending rain. The crew shared stories and history that kept us completely interested. The live singing that serenaded us was angelic and added to the atmosphere and scenic beauty. The culmination at Fern Grotto with the crew singing of “The Hawaiian Wedding song” was enchanting. He told us so much history about the island. We had a great lunch at Chicken in a Barrel in Waimea, made many photo stops (which if I had any negative comment I would wish we had a few less stops and more time at other stops). The biggest takeaway for us on this tour was that it really seemed like the company tried to make something into a full day that didn't need to be. Further, Eaton, our driver/guide, fell far short of the standard all our other guides set. He was very friendly but did not do much narration throughout the day; he just played music a lot of the time. On the positive side, the bus was very nice and pickup was right on time. Lunch at Chicken in a Barrel was great. The views of Waimea Canyon were spectacular. Kauai Coffee Company was a great stop. Bottom line: If you have a vehicle, it is pretty easy to see these things yourself, and likely in less time than this tour took. She also knew weather patterns and things well and even though of course rain can’t be controlled, she knew the usual timing and pattern and we were able to see it all beautifully even on a rainy day as she diverted bad weather and showed us different things to wait it out. The only two complaints are coming from Oahu and flying out that morning for a day trip, we did have to sit at the airport in Kauai for about an hour and a half after landing for the van to come to start the tour at 8am so it was a very long day. But it was entertaining and a great way to see a lot of the island and learn a lot! Only other thing is the lunch place was an odd choice. It was at a nice golf course but the options were super basic like cheeseburgers and fried chicken and it would have been fun to go to a local place with local cuisine.
