Travel Insurance for Fiji: A Complete Guide

Written and researched by Michael Kays (Travel Insurance Expert) | Fact Checked by Danya Kristen (Insurance Agent).

Visiting the South Pacific nation of Fiji is like stepping into a tropical paradise, with its pristine beaches, clear blue waters, vibrant coral reefs, and lush rainforests.

Whether you’re planning to unwind by the beach, partake in adventure sports, or explore the rich Fijian culture, you need to consider travel insurance for Fiji as part of your travel plans .

In this article...

Why Do You Need Travel Insurance for Fiji?

Travel insurance is essential for any international trip, and Fiji is no exception. It offers financial protection against unforeseen circumstances such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost baggage, and more.

Here’s a closer look at why it’s important to get travel insurance when traveling to Fiji:

  • Medical Emergencies: Although Fiji has adequate healthcare facilities, complex medical cases may require evacuation to a country with more advanced medical facilities, like Australia or New Zealand. This can be incredibly costly. Good travel insurance covers medical emergencies and hospitalization, as well as medical evacuation, if needed.
  • Adventure Sports: Fiji offers numerous adventure sports activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, and surfing. Engaging in these activities may increase the risk of injury. Ensure your travel insurance covers adventure sports (learn more about Adventure Sports and Travel Insurance ).
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Whether it’s due to personal reasons or unexpected weather events such as cyclones, sometimes trips get cancelled or cut short. Travel insurance can cover non-refundable expenses related to your trip in such situations.
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage: With travel insurance, you can be reimbursed for personal belongings that are lost, stolen, or damaged during your trip.

Recommended Plans

✅  Atlas America

Up to $2,000,000 of Overall Maximum Coverage, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Medical coverage for eligible expenses related to COVID-19, Trip Interruption & Travel Delay.

✅  Safe Travels Comprehensive

✅  Patriot America Platinum

Up to $8,000,000 limits, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Coinsurance for treatment received in the U.S. (100% within PPO Network), Acute Onset of Pre-Existing Conditions covered.

Understanding Your Travel Insurance Policy

When you’re comparing different travel insurance plans , there are key terms and conditions that you should understand:

  • Coverage Limit: This is the maximum amount the insurance company will pay for a covered loss.
  • Deductible : This is the amount you pay out-of-pocket for a covered loss before the insurance kicks in.
  • Exclusions : These are specific conditions or circumstances for which the insurance policy will not provide benefits .

In addition, ensure you understand the claims process of your insurance provider.

VisitCover provides a detailed guide on how to file a travel insurance claim that can help you navigate this process.

Travel Tips for Fiji

While you’re preparing for your trip to Fiji, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Fiji is located in the tropics, and the country has a risk of cyclones, especially between November and April. Stay updated with the weather forecasts and plan accordingly.
  • As a traveler, be aware of your personal safety. Keep your belongings secure and avoid isolated areas, especially after dark.
  • If you’re planning to engage in adventure sports, ensure that the equipment is safe and the operators are licensed.
  • Carry a basic first-aid kit and any prescription medications you need. Also, protect yourself from mosquito bites to avoid mosquito-borne diseases.

FAQs About Travel Insurance for Fiji

1. Is travel insurance mandatory for Fiji?

While travel insurance is not mandatory for traveling to Fiji, it is highly recommended to protect yourself against unexpected expenses.

2. What should my travel insurance policy cover for a trip to Fiji?

Your travel insurance policy should ideally cover medical emergencies, including evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, lost or stolen baggage, and personal liability. If you’re planning to engage in adventure sports, ensure these are covered as well.

3. How do I make a claim on my travel insurance policy?

The process to make a claim can vary depending on your insurance provider.

Typically, you need to notify your insurer as soon as possible, gather supporting documentation (such as medical reports, police reports, or receipts), complete a claim form, and submit it to your insurer.

Ensure you understand the claims process and the timeline to avoid any surprises later.

4. Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve left for Fiji?

While it is best to buy travel insurance before your trip starts, some insurers allow you to buy travel insurance after you’ve departed. However, there may be waiting periods or conditions, and you may not be covered for incidents that have already occurred.

5. What if I have pre-existing medical conditions?

Disclose all pre-existing conditions to your insurer when buying travel insurance. Coverage for pre-existing conditions varies among insurers. Some may provide coverage if the condition is stable, while others may exclude these from coverage.

Whether you’re traveling to Fiji for its stunning landscapes, adventure sports, or cultural experiences, it is crucial to protect your trip with appropriate travel insurance. It not only provides peace of mind but also financial protection against unforeseen situations.

As with any insurance policy, take the time to understand the coverages, exclusions, and claims process to ensure it meets your specific needs. Bon voyage!

Remember, insurance is a way to safeguard your journey to the idyllic islands of Fiji, allowing you to embrace the adventure and the unexpected with open arms, knowing you’re well protected.

Australians flock to Fiji for tropical holidays. Last year, in fact, Australia was the number one source market to the Pacific Island nation, recording 345,149 visitors. This was double the number of arrivals from the second-highest source country of New Zealand, according to data from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.

Of course, even in paradise things can go wrong. Taking out the appropriate level of travel insurance can provide peace of mind that the costs related to an illness or emergency will not break the bank.

According to the latest on the Fiji tourism official site, travel insurance is recommended . It is not compulsory. “Regardless of where you’re travelling, things can go wrong and that’s as true for Fiji as anywhere else,” says Doug Skoog, Head of Brand at Freely Travel Insurance.

Fiji has extremely high exposure to tropical cyclones, floods and landslides. These are most common during the wet season between November and April, but they can strike at any time of year.

According to the Australian government’s travel advisory website Smart Traveller, the usual safety precautions should be taken in Fiji. At the time of publishing, the travel advisory places Fiji on the lowest of four risk categories .

Nonetheless, Smart Traveller notes that opportunistic crime occurs in Fiji and includes robbery, theft and violent assault. It recommends being extra cautious in the capital of Suva after dark.

Fiji has extremely high exposure to tropical cyclones, floods and landslides. These are most common during the wet season between November and April, but they can strike at any time of year

Furthermore, even in a country like Fiji, where the cost of living is lower than Australia, medical bills can be very expensive and standards of healthcare may be lower. If you need to be evacuated to a nearby country for specialist treatment that is not available locally, the costs could run into tens of thousands of dollars.

Having travel insurance provides peace of mind and the specific benefits can include coverage for cancellations and changes, medical expenses and emergency repatriation or evacuation. Travel insurance can also provide coverage for things like lost, damaged or stolen luggage.

Some travellers mistakenly assume that the Australian government will pick up the tab in the event of an emergency arising when a citizen is overseas, but this is incorrect. This occurs only in the most exceptional circumstances.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies now provide coverage for Covid-related illnesses and cancellations. However, it is important to check the terms of any policy, as the level of cover can vary substantially.

Some travellers mistakenly assume that the Australian government will pick up the tab in the event of an emergency arising when a citizen is overseas, but this is incorrect. This occurs only in the most exceptional circumstances

For example, you might be covered for medical costs if you catch Covid overseas, but not if you need to cancel because you caught it at home before you left.

Skoog says that terms to look out for include pre-trip and on-trip cancellations, overseas medical costs and associated expenses for rearranging flights or accommodation. Note that limitations will apply, too.

The right type of travel insurance for Fiji depends on individual circumstances, such as health and the type of holiday you are planning.

It can also come down to risk appetite. Some people may only want coverage in the event of requiring emergency medical treatment, while others will have peace of mind knowing that they are covered in the event of a range of scenarios occurring.

“Weigh up your options. Is the price of travel insurance worth the possible cost of cancellations and amendments? Or on the more serious end, the cost of medical expenses and repatriation or evacuation?” says Skoog.

Another consideration is the specific activities you have planned in Fiji.

“Carefully consider what you’ll be doing and whether the policy provides cover for your activities whilst you’re travelling,” says Skoog.

An activity like riding a moped is likely excluded from all policies.

If you plan on going snorkelling or scuba diving, check that the policy specifically includes it. Some policies offer coverage for days lost diving due to poor weather or illness. Appropriate qualifications in scuba diving will be needed for the policy to be valid.

The easiest way to buy travel insurance for Fiji is online.

You can also purchase it from a travel agent, and some credit cards provide complimentary travel insurance when flights are booked using the credit card.

Always check carefully for terms and exclusions.

It is important to read the fine print, which in insurance is known as the ‘Product Disclosure Statement’ (PDS).

Failing to do so can result in significant extra costs and the disappointment that comes with a long-anticipated holiday turning pear-shaped.

“For example, depending on your provider, some coverage will only be provided if your travel insurance policy was purchased a certain amount of time in advance of your trip,” says Skoog.

Or if you get sick just a few days before your trip, you may not be entitled to claim any cancellation costs from relevant suppliers.

“Keep in mind the amount of excess payable if a claim is approved,” says Skoog. “This is the money deducted by your insurance provider from the amount that gets paid out to you. It can vary by insurer and it’s worth looking into.”

Is travel insurance compulsory for Fiji?

Travel insurance is not compulsory for Fiji, however the Australian government recommends taking it out. If medical treatment is needed, the costs can be substantial. If a cancellation occurs for some reason, it is reassuring to know that the holiday can take place at a later date.

What is the best travel insurance for Fiji?

Choosing the right travel insurance will come down to personal preference and individual circumstance.

Consider the reputation of the provider, and whether there is a number you can call and easily get through to someone, suggests Doug Skoog, Head of Brand at Freely Travel Insurance.

Many travel insurance companies now provide all their services online, which some travellers may prefer over phone call or paper-based forms.

FijiCare launches Fiji’s first travel insurance plan and the VuvaleCare Micro-insurance

fiji travel insurance

People will now be able to purchase travel insurance through a Fijian insurance provider and FijiCare has launched their Comprehensive Travel Insurance product along with the VuvaleCare Micro-insurance.

While speaking at the launch, FijiCare Executive Director Avi Raju says FijiCare Comprehensive Travel Insurance includes COVID-19 coverage, accidental death and other travel-related benefits where both the visitors to Fiji and Fijians travelling abroad are eligible for the cover.

Raju says in about 8 weeks time people will be able to purchase this product through their Viber messaging app.

He says Fiji is one of the very few countries where people will be able to transact right from inception to payment on a messaging app.

Raju says VuvaleCare is an online platform through which people will be able to purchase Bundle Micro-insurance while more products will be available soon.

The Executive Director says close to 100,000 people are covered by the Bundle Micro-insurance product that covers funeral assistance, term life, fire and dwelling and personal accident insurance.

He says this will be available fully online through vuvalecare.com.

The Executive Director says the Fijian diaspora, Fijians who go and work under the worker scheme or just friends of Fijians who live offshore will be able to purchase this cover for their loved ones back in Fiji and thus promoting financial inclusion and greater insurance coverage for the most vulnerable.

He further says the claims environment has been very challenging post-COVID and they saw a record payout of $33.8 million in claims in 2022.

FijiCare Chairman, Dumith Fernando says in the last five years from 2017 to 2022, FijiCare has written three times more premiums which is a larger exponential growth than any other insurance provider.

He says they currently pay the largest amount of claims out which means they are protecting more people at a larger sum, which is a direct benefit to their customers.

Fernando says their solvency surplus is also up four times in that period which is more than any other insurance company.

He adds their share price has also increased more than four times.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka says in some cases, there will still be doubts about whether having insurance is a necessity.

He says it is because it can seem like a luxury purchase for most people who simply cannot afford to pay for something they do not directly use and that is the reality.

He says, however, another reality is that risks although the same such as fires or injuries affect people disproportionately.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka says in Fiji, low-income earners are the most vulnerable and the least protected.

He says this is where affordable and accessible insurance that caters to scale is critical.

Gavoka adds the rise in tourism travel is fueling the growth of the travel insurance market.

The Deputy Prime Minister says as the Minister responsible for Tourism, he hopes we get to see more micro-insurance bundles covering not just resource-based sectors but tourism too.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Fiji

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.
