Key Largo to Key West Bike Tour

Ready for a spectacular winter bike ride in 70 degree weather?  We have found an ideal ride, call it early season or winter getaway, to hold your attention, with enough quirky sideshows to keep you amused. We will ride the entire 113 mile length of the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West. Although there are about 1700 keys in the archipelago, there are only 43 connected by bridges – and we will ride most of them! From Key West, we cruise to Fort Meyers on a modern, luxury catamaran and from there, ride Sanibel and Captiva Islands . These islands are a special place, whether it is your first time to the famous islands or you are a regular. Sanibel Island is the perfect place to stroll by the lighthouse or enjoy a trip through Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge looking for amazing animals and birds. Explore All That The Florida Keys Has to Offer

In riding the Keys, we discovered some truths: the ocean and Gulf are as wide and at least as blue as Montana’s Big Sky ; as deep as the Rockies are high; the coral reefs of the Keys rival the color country of Utah’s canyons and its wildlife is as fascinating as that of Yellowstone . Palm trees and mangrove swamps and tropical orchids are the wildflowers of the Keys; crocodiles and manatees and the occasional panther are the protected wildlife. In the West we have Bear Valley and Death Valley ; in the Keys there is Shark Valley . Road signs in the West warn of elk or deer crossings; in the Keys are alligator warnings; river valleys in the Keys are rivers of grass and snorkeling or kayaking replace hiking as offered activities on layover days. In short it reinforces what we all know-there is no part of America that is not special and glorious. This is a unique and beautiful tour and we are excited to be offering a Florida Keys trip.

Biking the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail; finding safe & scenic sections

Just as Henry Flagler longed to take his railroad to Key West, bicyclists have long dreamt of riding a safe bike trail to the southern tip of the scenic Florida Keys.

The dream is close to coming true, but we’re not quite there.

There is a bike trail operated by Florida State Parks, but it is not complete and it sustained hurricane damage from both Irma in 2017 and Ian in 2022.

PLEASE NOTE: As of April 2023, some bike bridges in the Lower Keys are still closed from Hurricane Ian damage, causing cyclists to revert to pedaling along the less safe and desirable roadside bike lane. The bridge over the Ohio-Missouri Channel at MM 39 is still closed and areas along Long Key State Park in the vicinity of MM 71 are bumpy and underwater after rain.

Despite the challenges, strong riders with street smarts and/or on guided rides bike the whole 106-mile-long Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail by the dozen every month, raving about the tropical scenery.

The bike trail through the Florida Keys may be flat, but it has its ups and downs. Many riders (me!) would not have fun on sections where you must ride on 3-foot-wide shoulders as cars whiz by at 50 miles per hour with drivers distracted by scenic beauty. If you read trip reports on Trailink , complaints about the bike trail are as common as is awe over the scenery.

On several visits to the Keys where my husband and I bicycled sections of the trail, I concluded there are sections that make the Florida Keys a great place to bicycle for nearly everyone. You just have to pick your spots . And when you do, you get to enjoy one of the key reasons I love to tour by bike: You take in the scenery at a slower pace, where it’s easy to stop and enjoy.

Here are recommendations for bicyclists who want to experience the Keys on their bikes but don’t want to bike the entire length or ride on narrow shoulders adjacent to traffic.

I’ve assembled tips based on my experiences biking and driving the Overseas Highway, information from Florida State Parks and advice from Mark Terrill, biking guru at Key Largo Bike and Adventure Tours.

Some sections are more scenic than others. Some are safer and more comfortable than others. And it’s important to note that the entire trail is actually hard to follow, as it regularly crosses from bayside to oceanside and back, or continues on a parallel route not clearly marked and not visible from the U.S. 1.

For those who want to bicycle the entire length, Mark Terrill’s Key Largo Bike and Adventure Tours offers one- or two-day tours and a variety of other support services. He also offers bike rentals for longer or shorter rides and tours along specific sections of the trail. He has seen use of the path grow dramatically in recent years.

For shorter trips, riders can easily plan do-it-yourself tours, as I did.

Here are four sections of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail to consider for do-it-yourself Keys bike tours:

Between MM 90 and 80 along the Old Road

For 10 miles, the old state road (State Highway 4A) parallels U.S. 1 on the ocean side.  It’s a scenic stretch, but has only occasional water views as it mostly passes through a woodsy residential area.

The homes range from multi-million-dollar gated mansions owned by celebrities (Coach Jimmy Johnson, actor Gene Hackman) to funky oceanfront trailer courts to resorts and businesses. It’s fun to spend time seeing life in the Keys up close, including places where people live and work.

The bike trail here is actually just a low-traffic residential road and is not clearly marked. (To make it more confusing, there is also a bike lane bayside along U.S. 1 too.)

At two short bridges in this section, the old road rejoins U.S. 1 and bicyclists cross the bridge in a designated lane along the shoulder. While I wouldn’t tackle the long Keys bridges riding in the shoulder (such as the Seven Mile Bridge), these bridges were easy and felt safe. We walked our bikes at the center of the bridges just to enjoy the view.

It’s easy enough to find parking in this area. We started from The Islander Resort, where we were staying, but there are spaces in the nearby Islamorada commercial district at MM 81.5 .

From there we pedaled south, turned around at the Tea Table Channel , then headed north and turned around at Coral Shores High School. Another good place to start your trek might be from that high school area.

On our 20 mile round-trip on this section of the Keys bike trail, we also enjoyed stopping at picturesque marinas like Bud N Mary’s (MM 79.8) and historic sites, including the interesting hurricane memorial at MM 81.5.

The hurricane monument tells the story of the devastating 1935 storm.  In 1937, ashes of many of those who died were buried here when the monument was dedicated. Be sure to see the beautiful tile-mosaic map of the islands hit by the storm in front of the monument.

There’s a charming small residential area between the hurricane monument and ocean in Islamorada and it’s worth exploring on bike to the end, where you’ll find the Moorings, the expensive resort popular for fashion shoots. It’s also where the Netflix series Bloodlines is filmed.

We also shopped at the Old Road Gallery (88.8 on U.S. 1 and with an entrance also on the old road), which has gardens and an adjoining “Red Cross hurricane house” now used as an art gallery, which you can tour.

Islamorada cherishes the historic extra-strong poured concrete houses built by the Red Cross to house survivors of that 1935 Labor Day hurricane. You’ll pass several marked with plaques on the ride.

Around the Old Road Gallery we also admired some of the dozens of peacocks that roam this area.

You’ll have an easy time finding a place to pause for a snack. Here are a few suggestions:   Midway Café and Coffee Bar , MM 80.4,  which earns 4.5 stars on both Yelp and TripAdvisor; Lazy Days Restaurant , MM 79.8 oceanside, has excellent fresh fish and a spectacular ocean view.

Located along the way are two craft breweries in Islamorada that are worthwhile places to end your ride. Here’s more about them.

Long Key section

Between mm 71 at the channel 5 bridge to the end of the historic long key bridge at mm 62.

This 18-mile-round-trip section of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail has spectacular views of water and sky, including from the 2.2-mile-long historic Long Key Bridge.

Because it is close to the water oceanside, this section was badly damaged by waves and flooding from Hurricane Irma in 2017. During 2020, however, most of this section has been repaired. 

For this ride, you can park at the southern base of the Channel 5 Bridge at MM 71 bayside at a lot for those using the fishing bridge. (One drawback: You almost immediately have to cross the highway as the trail continues on the ocean side.)

On this route, you’ll also cross the shorter Tom’s Harbor Channel Historic Bridge (MM 61), which, like the Long Key Bridge, has cantilevered fishing platforms added to provide space for both fishing and bikes. 

The bike path runs along Long Key State Par k, and has some good views of the beaches and the beguiling turquoise water. (It’s a beautiful park; it’s well worth making a stop here.) 

The Long Key bridge is the second-longest bridge of Henry Flagler’s railroad and is preserved as a bike and pedestrian path parallel to the new highway bridge. Smooth and traffic-free, it is as scenic and safe as a bike trail can get. (My husband, who doesn’t like heights, did have to ride right down the middle to avoid freaking out.)

Once you cross Long Key Bridge, however, the improved trail pretty much ends and is just a 3-foot-lane along the shoulder for the next two miles south. Instead of continuing, we crossed to the bayside and rode through Little Conch Key, a funky island with old cottages, mobile homes, views of the water and lots of general Keys flavor. From there, we turned around at MM 62 and headed back.

If you want a short ride just on the Long Key Bridge and back, you can park at the southern end of the bridge at MM 65.6, where this is a parking lot and signage.

Lower Keys to Key West

From mm 15 to key west and back.

This may be the best section of the FKOHT. My husband and I rode MM15 to MM5 and back in December 2016.  Here’s my full report .

What we liked:

• It’s carefree. For the entire stretch, the trail has its own lane, hugging the water on the ocean side, included its  own dedicated bridges. (NOTE: Hurricane Ian in September 2022 knocked out some bridges and sections in the Lower Keys where bicyclists must use the bike lanes on US 1.)
• The scenery. Highlights are a half dozen bridges and long stretches with open views of water.
• There’s a great starting point where you can park and caffeinate– Baby’s Coffee at MM15 — and some good turn-around spots, like Key West Botanic Gardens on Stock Island in Key West.
• Here are the details on the bike trail into Key West .

Old Seven Mile Bridge to Sombrero Beach

This tour will be about 14 miles roundtrip, but with the scenery and activities, you could spend all day on it.

Start your ride near the start of the Old Seven Mile Bridge at MM 47 bayside. There’s a parking lot there, but it’s hard to find parking there because the newly re-opened bridge is so popular.

It’s a gorgeous 2.2 mile ride on the refurbished section of the Old Seven Mile Bridge, so 4.4 miles round trip. There are bike lanes here and views the whole way. Here’s more about biking and visiting the Old Seven Mile bridge .

For a longer ride from the bridge area, pedal north along the Oversease Keys Overseas Heritage Trail for three miles through Marathon. At this point, the trail is separate from the highway and is located bayside. At MM 50, Sombrero Beach Road, leave the Overseas Heritage Trail and ride a dedicated bike path east to Sombrero Beach. This is a beautiful free local beach and well-landscaped park with picnic tables, rest rooms, swimming and snorkeling. The nice thing about biking to Sombrero Beach is that you don’t have to worry about getting a parking space.

General tip for riding the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail:

• On longer rides, flat tires are common because of road debris. Serious cyclists suggest Kevlar-lined tires, fat-tire bikes or at least plenty of spares. (We had two flat tires on one ride.)
• Take special care in crossing busy U.S. 1 and in residential and commercial areas where people are turning into or coming out of driveways. This is the most hazardous aspect of the trail.
• Prevailing winds make a south-bound trip easier than a north-bound one.
• The northern-most section of the trail – from MM 106.5 to 91 — is primarily a paved bike trail separated from the highway. But as nice as the trail quality is, it’s hard to recommend because it’s not terribly scenic.
• To pedal across the famous Seven Mile Bridge, you face a five-foot shoulder, often strewn with debris, as semis roar by and drivers gaze too long at the view. (Note: If you are on a bike and don’t want to ride across the Seven Mile Bridge, you can call a cab. In Marathon, they all have bike racks, Terrill said.)

Chris: A state park representative said bridges are big, expensive projects and the damage to bridges (the largest being at MM39, the bridge over the Ohio-Missouri Channel) has not been completed. -- Bonnie

My wife, her friend and I completed an ebike ride from Key Largo to Key West and back from Nov 28 to Dec 2. The ride south was great, with the wind at our backs; the north return was no fun with 20-30 mile headwinds. The ride north is not for the faint of heart! Many of the lower Keys pedestrian bridges are closed due to storm damage so you must ride on the highway bike paths or along the road shoulder. With strong winds, these roadside rides become a real adventure.

I wish locals who ride bikes would practice good bike manners and call out a loud verbal warning, "Passing on the left," when overtaking another rider. Not once was I notified of approaching riders with the result in Marathon that a rider squeezed in on me on a narrow path and forced me off the path, hitting a large boulder and knocking me to the ground. My back and hip are still very sore and my injuries could have been much, much worse.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Prevailing winds make that northward trip a bear -- I guess even with an e-bike! I recently drove to Key West and was so sorry to see the two bridge outages in the Lower Keys. That used to be the safest and best section of the trail. My experience with previous hurricane damage is that the state park system, which manages that trail, takes a LONG time to make repairs. So I'm afraid it will be years before those bridges are reopened. As for biker etiquette. It's a shame! I'm a slower rider and I have had that experience.

Note to our readers: For those looking to pedal the entire bike trail south to Key West and looking for a way back without making it a round-trip, there are two public transportation options to consider.

There is a bus operating from Key West to Marathon, where you can transfer to a Miami-Dade bus that continues on to Key Largo. Here’s a link for more information: http://www.kwtransit.com/ Flixbus, http://www.FlixBus.com, a European company that operates service from Miami to Key West with several stops. In looking at the reservation site, it appears "bike slots" are largely taken. You can also call 855-626-8585.

To anyone reading, I plan to bike the FKOTH the full 105 miles Key Largo to Key West on Saturday, Nov 12, hopefully departing Key Largo by 8am. Would be great to not do it alone, if anyone adventurous riders would like to join reply and we'll connect. I'm probably an "above-average" cyclist (I guess tackle this that would be expected), maybe hoping to average 17-18 mph (wind dependent) with a couple brief stops along the way. I'll spend the night and try the bus route Bob Rountree suggested below to get back to Key Largo on Sunday. If the bus plan fails, I get another century ride to get back. Still looking for the best overnight parking in Key Largo, and hopefully this Hurricane Nicole doesn't linger long enough to ruin my plan!

Hi, is there a part of the trail that would be safe to ride with children (9 yo)? We are staying on Islamorada, would it be possible to ride bikes with the kids there?

The section of the trail in Islamorada is actually the Old Road, which parallels the main highway. It does have cars on it, though traffic is light, but I probably wouldn't choose it for kids. 

What I think would be fun for kids would be the part of the trail that is on the Long Key bridge. It's about 15 miles south of Islamorada.  The Long Key bridge is the second-longest bridge of Henry Flagler’s railroad and is preserved as a bike and pedestrian path parallel to the new highway bridge. Smooth and traffic-free, it is as scenic and safe. The bridge is 3 miles long, so it's a 6-mile round trip. At the southern end of the bridge at MM 65.6, where this is a parking lot and signage on the bayside of the road.

Due to hurricane damage on the gulf coast areas of Sanibel and Fort Myers, we have decided to alter our routes for the 2024 Everglades | Key West Bike Tour. This will allow everyone a year or two to rebuild, recover and come back better than ever.

Our new itinerary will still include white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and warm ocean tailwinds, making The Florida Keys and Everglades National Park the ideal place to kick back and enjoy a laid-back winter bike tour getaway. Join us this winter for a luxury-style tour filled with multi-sport activities. Jumpstart your spring training, or simply enjoy a warm week from the grasps of winter.

This tour starts with a short 15-mile shuttle from Miami to Shark Valley in the Everglades. Cycling through the Everglades allows for a slower paced tour than your typical airboat excursion because we opt for a car-free paved trail. We ride through freshwater ecosystems within Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have plenty of time and opportunity to take in the views of the ever-changing sawgrass prairie, abundant wading birds and an occasional alligator.

South Florida and The Keys weather is always the best at this time of year. The water temperatures are in the low 70s and the air temperature in the upper 70s. This makes for ideal cycling temperatures. When you want a break from cycling (or perhaps you are a non-cyclist), enjoy some time poolside or on the beach at one of our lodging destinations. Grab a cocktail at the tiki bar, schedule a spa treatment or take a visit to the Turtle Hospital or the Dolphin Research Center. If you need a break from the bike saddle, get your feet wet in the water at some of America’s top beaches or snorkel effortlessly on the water’s surface near the 3rd largest reef in the world.

The majority of our tour follows a federally recognized National Scenic Highway. The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is a multi-use path which closely parallels US Highway 1 for 106 miles. The town of Key West boasts of bike paths, bike routes and quirky hotels and eateries. There is not a shortage of additional entertaining activities. Watch the sunset over Mallory Square, live entertainment and shows on Duval Street or visit the many museums and galleries.

• At the conclusion of the tour, we can drop you at the Key West Airport for departure, offer you a 3.5 hour shuttle back to your car in Miami or arrange for the fast ferry to take you from Key West to Fort Meyers, where you can grab an Uber or shuttle to an airport hotel for a flight out the next morning. If you are not ready to go back to the cold winter, stay a few extra days on Key West.

Originally a Rails-to-Trails project, the 19-mile paved, asphalt trail runs parallel to State Road 207 and includes views of mixed woodlands rural landscapes.

Suncoast Trail

For its entire route, the Suncoast Trail follows its namesake Suncoast Parkway, a toll-road highway that stretches between FL-44 in Lecanto and W Lutz Lake Fern Rd. in Upper Tampa Bay.

Florida Keys Bicycle Tour Round-Trip 5 Days 200 Miles

DAY 1 Our Florida Keys Bicycle Tour starts out in Key Largo, Florida. In the morning we group together with introductions and a overview of our ride. We begin our 44 mile day with a casual warm-up through Key Largo. From there our ride begins along the bike trails and Overseas Highway taking in the beautiful ocean views and beach towns along the way.

Our first SAG stop is at Long Key State Park. Here we can take some time off the bike and enjoy the scenic walks and beaches. The final 12 miles take us to the city of Marathon where our stay at The Hammocks offers us fantastic views, wild life and beaches.

DAY 2 We leave our "Hammock" and begin heading south toward Key West. Once our pace will pick up we enjoy the ride over 7 Mile Bridge. This is the type of riding we have been seeking with endless water on each side of us.

We continue our ride to the "End of the Road" passing through many of the Florida Keys with many opportunities to soak up the experience. After our 55 mile ride our destination is complete. We can now sit back, relax and enjoy Key West! Bottoms Up!

DAY 3 Enjoy Key West from the Pegasus International Hotel in the heart of town.

Southern Most Point Ernest Hemingway House Butterfly and Nature Conservatory Aquarium Snorkeling Beaches Night-life and Osters!

DAY 4 Back on our bicycles, today we ride 65 miles to Layton where we stay at the Lime Tree Bay Resort near Long Key State Park. After this ride you will be ready to enjoy the beach and kick back.

DAY 5 Our last day on our tour but it doesn't mean it has to be your last day in the Florida Keys. Our ride back reminds us of why we came, the 30 mile ride brings us back to Key Largo where we can stay a few more days. As the tour is completed we can imagine making this an annual event.

A great option to get out and explore. The average daily mileage for the tour is 35-45 miles per day. There is a little more climbing involved, generally characterized by rolling terrain. You’ll start in Fort Myers, see the modern quaintness of Naples, and enjoy the down-home quirkiness of Everglades City. From there, prepare to be enamoured with the majestic swamplands as we ride the Tamiami Trail Road to be enveloped in Big Cypress National Preserve. Not long after that, you’ll find yourselves spanning Florida’s longest bridges hopping from key to key until your soul reaches full Parrothead for a celebration in Key West. A sunset ferry ride back to Fort Myers will close out this glorious loop of all the diverse adventure South Florida has to offer.

Day 1. Fort Myers, 0 miles

We’ll gather in the bright and lively Fort Myers, a tourist gateway to southwest Florida and known winter respite of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and other influential Americans. If you arrive early enough, you’ll have time to see sights named for these folks before gathering with your tour group and preparing for the ride ahead.

Day 2. Fort Myers to Naples, 45 miles

We’ll roll out on our first day down Estero Boulevard, soaking in the sea spray as we hop from key to key before turning slightly inland toward Naples. Known for its world-class shopping, sophisticated dining, and wealthy country clubs, we’ll be basking in the upper-class radiance that is Naples before settling down to camp for the evening.

Day 3. Naples to Ochopee, 51 miles

We kick off today’s ride on Route 41, or the Tamiami Trail. The Tamiami is a beautiful stretch of pavement that travels through various forest preserves including Big Cypress. We’ll witness the wonderful charm of old-world Florida that is Everglades City, an interesting juxtaposition from Naples. Continuing on the Tamiami through Ochopee, we’ll rest at a campground in the heart of Big Cypress National Preserve.

Day 4. Ochopee to Florida City, 68 miles

Didn’t get enough of the lush envelopment on Tamiami? You’re in luck! The first half of today will be spent still in the warm embrace of this natural area before we turn south. Our travels will take us through agricultural areas with many fresh produce stands and orchards. We’ll end a big day’s riding in Florida City, thankful to have a rest day here awaiting us!

Day 5. Florida City, 0 miles

Layover day. We’ll spend the day relaxing in Florida City, a suburb of Miami and the southernmost city in the U.S. that’s not on an island. Feel free to explore the shops and restaurants, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can go on a tour in the Everglades. Keep an eye out for alligators!

Day 6. Florida City to Key Largo, 27 miles

Can you hear that Beach Boys tune yet? It’s our first day in the Keys! We’ll enter through North Key Largo, with Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park to your left and Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge to your right. You’d do well not to get those confused lest you want to become dinner!

Day 7. Key Largo to Marathon, 43 miles

We’ll hop enough keys today to fill a janitor’s key ring. Today the Overseas Highway leads us through Islamorada, Indian Key, Long Key State Park, and, finally, Marathon. We’ll ride across several of the relatively new, bike-friendly bridges that link the Keys. Other available highlights of the day include the Theater of the Sea in Islamorada, where you can swim with dolphins, sea lions, and rays. Options on Long Key include canoeing through a chain of lagoons or hiking the Golden Orb Trail. Our destination, Marathon, occupies several of the central Keys. It was named by Florida East Coast Railroad workers who toiled at an unrelenting pace to complete the railroad — a real marathon of a job.

Day 8. Marathon to Key West, 57 miles

We’ll cross the New Seven Mile Bridge to Bahia Honda State Park on Big Pine Key. The 500-acre park features lovely sand beaches and some of the best snorkeling and beachcombing in Florida. Sea kayaks are also available for rent and make a great way to explore the quiet waters off the key. From there, we’ll continue on to Key West, which has been likened to a more laid-back version of New Orleans. Originally known as Cayo Hueso, Spanish for “bone key,” it’s said that the island was so named because early European visitors found it to be littered with human bones.

Day 9. Key West, 0 miles. Layover day

There’s so much to see and do in Key West that just one layover day can’t do it justice. Still, you can give it your best shot. There’s the Key West Aquarium (built by the Works Progress Administration in 1932–34), Mel Fisher’s Treasures (exhibits from shipwrecks discovered by the famous treasure hunter), the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, the Harry S. Truman Little White House, the Key West Lighthouse, the Half Shell Raw Bar — you get the picture. Tonight we’ll have our celebration dinner. Has anyone seen my lost shaker of salt?

Day 10. Fort Myers, 0 miles

Today’s the day we say goodbye. Though we’ve only boated around the tip of Florida, we hope you’ll return to the mainland with plenty of stories to tell and an island state of mind. Enjoy one more afternoon in Key West before boarding the ferry as a group. We’ll make our way back to Fort Myers via ferry, then spend our last night together in Florida.

Accommodations - Camping/Indoor

Most of the overnights will be at private or public campgrounds with a range of amenities. Depending on the nature and location of the trip, these facilities could range from RV parks with hot tubs, to wilderness locations without running water. Indoor facilities such as motels/hotels, hostels, and churches are used occasionally, but on our more remote trips, some primitive camping is possible. Epic tours generally see about one indoor overnight every ten days. Overnight facilities vary, but tents are typically pitched on large, flat, grassy areas. You will need a good freestanding tent with a ground cloth, a sleeping bag rated appropriately for the season and elevation of your tour, and a sleeping pad.

Meals - Shared Cooking

Your group will share responsibilities for food purchase, preparation, and clean up on a rotating basis. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.

Terrain - gentle.

Gentle terrain means mostly flat roads and trails and is considered a relaxed type of ride. These tours typically have around 1,000 feet of elevation gain per day or less, and the grade is typically 1-4%. (0-19 vertical feet/mile).

About Cycling the Shark Valley Loop Trail

As you cycle Shark Valley Loop Trail you will find it is primarily used for walking, running, bird watching, and road biking and is accessible year-round. You can walk, ride your bike (or rent a bike onsite) or choose to take a guided tram. The 15-mile loop is very flat and 8 ft wide The average grade is  1% and a max grade is 2%  and easy for all to enjoy.

This unique trail follows the Shark River Slough, enabling you to view Florida’s native wildlife close up, including alligators, turtles and many bird species. Accessibility: The trail surface is paved, smooth, and typically at least eight feet wide.

Very beautiful but hot!

You will not find very much shade on this trail but it is totally worth it. Everywhere you look you will find, breathtaking views. Be sure to bring a hat, a spf shirt, sunscreen and lots of water in the warmer months of the year!

Observation Tower

A visit to the top of the Shark Valley Observation Tower is provide a 360-degree view and is perfect for sightseeing with birds, turtles, fishes, gators, and beautiful views of the River of Grass. Opened in 1973 this 50 foot tower found at the midpoint of the trail is provides the highest spot to view the distant horizon

This is simply a fantastic trail for beautiful scenery and a seemingly endless road to cycle Shark Valley through a very unique ecosystem, the impressive Everglades. The trail is recommended for walking or biking as the tram seems to startle most of the wildlife and suitable for all ages and abilities. Be sure to bring your camera and bug spray for those pesky mosquitoes that are on the prowl, though in the winter month’s mosquitoes are not nearly a problem.

Long before Rum Runners were cooling off thirsty tourists in the Keys, pirates thirsting for other treasure sailed the coastal waters.

The Florida Keys are known for their laid-back vibe with an emphasis on fun, and the Florida Keys Premier BubbaFest annual week-long bicycle tour of the Keys, fits right in.

Most of the bicycling is on the off-road paved Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Bike Trail, separate from cars but never far from the action – stunning ocean vistas sometimes populated with glimpses of dolphins, sharks, turtles, manatees, egrets, herons and the ubiquitous, oddly shaped brown pelicans.

You will cross 41 bridges as you ride from Key Largo to Key West, all the while enjoying the 360-degree water views.

The sounds of live music, clinking glasses and laughter spill out the open doors of countless Duval Street bars, hinting at the good times to be had inside. Mallory Square hosts the biggest nightly sunset party in the Keys, a multi-ring circus of flame jugglers, tightrope-walking dogs, Houdini-like escape artists and more, all vying for your attention with a steady comedic patter.

The Keys were discovered and charted in 1513 by Spaniard Ponce de Leon, best known for his search for the Fountain of Youth. De Leon thought the Fountain was never found, but he was wrong – it’s everywhere in the Keys, a destination that will have you peeling off the years like so many layers of unnecessary clothing.

The Spanish wrecked many a ship on the reefs looking for gold, those wrecks ultimately becoming treasure for scuba divers and marine life. The Spanish called these chains of islands “keys,” from the Spanish word “cayos,” which means “small islands.”

Florida became U.S. territory in 1812, with settlers first arriving in Key West in 1822. Pirates still prowled the waters then, so the Navy established a special fleet tasked with controlling the buccaneers. Early residents found rich fishing grounds and some even grew rich salvaging shipwrecks.

When early entrepreneur Henry Flagler decided to run a railroad the length of the Keys, it got the islands on track and chugging toward the future. Enamored of south Florida and its potential, Flagler started work on the 156-mile Over-Sea Railroad in 1905. The last section was laid in 1912 and Flagler, one of the original partners in Standard Oil and a hotel magnate, spent a week celebrating the completion with Key West locals.

To visitors, it appears the celebration never stopped. Key West remains a magical place of spectacular sunsets and unparalleled nightlife. The same is true for all the other islands.

Legend has it that early BubbaFesters used to travel the Keys in search of the best Key lime pie, asking the locals for recommendations and rating each pie on a scale of one to five based on flavor, crust, texture and presentation. The results were recorded in a Key lime-colored notebook to serve as a guide to future flavor-fests. While the location of this book is as closely guarded as a pirate’s treasure, and worth its weight in gold, you can start your own list.

Just think, Early-November in the Florida Keys. That alone should be enough, but there is plenty more.

One of the best state road trips in America has to be the sun-kissed drive from Key Largo to Key West in the Florida Keys. This road, known as the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, takes you through a 125-mile island chain that begins just south of Miami. It hopscotches over 42 bridges and five islands, and has turquoise waters stretching in every direction into the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and Gulf of Mexico.

So if you're looking for the perfect Atlantic Coast road trip or cheap beach vacation , look no further than this road trip guide from Key Largo to Key West. And if you'd rather travel from Key West to Key Largo, rest easy—the route works either way. There are shuttles that run from Key Largo to Key West, but keep in mind, you'd be missing out on all the fun in between.

By the way, once you embark on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, you'll notice that many sites along the way use mile markers (MM) in their address. We use those mile marker points in this story to help you navigate the drive.

Mile marker: 108–90

The first of the Florida Keys you'll hit after driving about an hour south from Miami en route from Key Largo to Key West is, well, Key Largo. Often referred to as the Dive Capital of the World, Key Largo includes one must-see stop: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (MM 102.5), the first underwater preserve in the United States.

Experienced and novice snorkelers and SCUBA divers will be enthralled by the teeming marine life that lives just below the water's surface, like parrot fish, barracudas and sea turtles. More experienced divers enjoy exploring the USS Spiegel Grove, one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef where pretty fish can thrive.

Back on dry land, travelers can wander nearly six miles of trails at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, home to more than 80 species of plants and animals. You can also peruse the work of local artists at myriad galleries.

Best beach: Cannon Beach, found within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, has shallow waters that are perfect for wading. You may even spot cannons and anchors on the beach that remain from a 1715 Spanish shipwreck.

Where to eat: Dig into the catch of the day at The Fish House, Key Largo Conch House or Snook's Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki Bar, some of the best traditional restaurants in the area. If you'd rather turf than surf, check out Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill.

Where to stay: If you can't get enough of the underwater world, stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge , the world's first underwater hotel. If you'd rather keep dry, try the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo .

Mile marker: 90–63

Next up en route from Key Largo to Key West is the fisherman's paradise known as Islamorada. Considered the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, it's where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly-fishing got their start. Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Since 1976, countless Keys visitors have stopped to feed them, and more than 100 kinds of fish gather at the docks for their daily snacks. Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride. Stop by the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where injured or displaced birdies now make their homes. Or visit the History of Diving Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets.

Best beach: Anne's Beach is popular with families (and dogs) because of its shallow waters and lack of waves. Take a walk along the boardwalk or enjoy a picnic at one of the covered tables.

Where to eat: For a quintessential casual Florida Keys meal, go to the Hungry Tarpon. If you want more elegant fare, make reservations at Chef Michael's for creatively inspired local dishes.

Where to stay: When it's time to lay your head for the night, check in to one of the new oceanfront suites at Cheeca Lodge & Spa , or your own cottage at The Moorings Village & Spa .

Mile marker: 63–40

Marathon is the island chain's top boating destination—and for good reason. The area boasts nearly 2,400 boat slips and plenty of facilities to accommodate sailors passing through. But you don't need your own boat to enjoy Marathon and its waters.

For a truly different experience, hop on over to Cruisin' Tikis and have a floating tiki bar adventure. Sunset, mangrove and harbor cruises are all available, as is a swim-stop cruise for a chance to jump into the water.

While you're here, you should also visit Pigeon Key, an island that is accessible by boat, trolley or walking the 2.2-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge. It has a museum to explore, either on a guided tour or on your own. The Bridge is open for walking, running, bicycling, rollerblading and, of course, watching the killer sunrises and sunsets.

The Lower Keys

Mile marker: 40–4

After crossing the Old Seven Mile Bridge out of Marathon, you'll find yourself in the Lower Keys, where natural habitats and wildlife refuges thrive. It's no wonder this part of the Florida Keys is known as the Natural Keys. You might even want to consider taking an electric vehicle on this road trip so you don't disturb the animals.

Your best chance to spot a native Key deer, a subspecies of the Virginia white-tailed deer that somehow made its way south, may be in the National Key Deer Refuge, comprised of 9,200 acres stretching from Bahia Honda Key to Sugarloaf Key on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. More than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species can be found within the refuge. Take a quiet walk at dusk or dawn for your best chance to glimpse a Key deer, or join a ranger-led tour to learn more about the area.

Aside from all the eco-friendly fun, Stock Island is well worth a stop. Their maritime history goes back generations, and the marina is filled with shrimping and fishing boats. Artists have been flocking to Stock Island, too, and share their works in galleries dotted across the small island.

Best beach: The shallow, clear water and white sand at Calusa Beach make it a locals' favorite. The beach is a perfect spot for snorkeling too.

Where to eat: In addition to the freshest of seafood, Big Pine Rooster serves up ribs and a special-recipe meatloaf. Or sip like the locals at No Name Pub, located on Big Pine Key.

Where to stay: Consider the waterfront Sugarloaf Lodge , stay in an Airstream at Big Pine Key Resort  or pop a tent on one of the reserved campsites at Bahia Honda State Park.

You've made it to the end! Closer to Cuba than Miami, Key West is known for its nightly sunset celebrations, party atmosphere and laissez-faire vibe, but it's really so much more.

If you're a writer or bookworm, you'll certainly want to make plans to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where you should keep an eye out for the famous six-toed cats. Then wander through Key West's Bahama Village, a 12-block area of historic homes and restaurants.

Consider a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, where you'll find some hidden gems . The island, accessible by boat or seaplane, is popular for snorkeling and feeling like you're on your own private island, not to mention touring the Civil War–era fort.

Art and history in the Florida Keys
