Giving Back Pays Big Dividends for This Undergrad

photo of lauren bishop in cap and gown in front of the famu-fsu college of engineering

Florida State University and FAMU-FSU College of Engineering undergraduate student Lauren Bishop was a leader in several organizations during her four years in college, including serving as the FSU student representative on the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Joint Management Council. (Scott Holstein/FAMU-FSU College of Engineering)

Lauren Bishop is taking every opportunity she sees to make a positive impact before she graduates this spring.

From organizations to volunteering, the Florida State University chemical engineering undergrad takes time to make a difference.

Bishop is one of two student representatives on the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Joint Management Council. Representing FSU on the important governing body alongside her FAMU student counterpart, Bishop represents the joint engineering student body on the council, which oversees the college’s administration. In this role, she sits with the dean, university presidents and upper management, and officials from the State University System to share the student perspective.

“Being on the Joint Management Council is vital to me because I care about the future of the the joint college,” Bishop said. “I think Dean De and other administrators are working hard to grow our program and I love that I get the opportunity to assist in that process. A school cannot be a school without its students, so being able to provide that student outlook and perspective is valuable to me.”

photo of university presidents student reps and dean of the famu-fsu college of engineering joint management council

Bishop is actively involved in several organizations on campus, including the Dean’s Advisory Board, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the FAMU-FSU Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Theta Tau Engineering Fraternity, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, the Student Engineering Leadership Board. She was also a marketing assistant at the college.

photo of lauren bishop in front of renewed engineering scuplture at famu-fsu college of engineering campus

Bishop’s parents are both engineers and taught her the benefits of the profession when she was young. They encouraged her to make an impression, positively impact the community, and always take advantage of service opportunities when they arise.

“My teachers, my parents, and all the organizations I’m involved with prioritize community service and giving back, which is amazing,” Bishop said. “One service project I worked on was the COE sculpture renewal project. It was rewarding because everyone got together to revitalize a great engineering piece at the college. Science Saturdays at the Challenger Learning Center were also really gratifying.”

When Bishop is not volunteering, she is either in class or the lab. She was an undergraduate researcher in the Ricarte Polymer and Vitrimer Laboratory, where she studied material and polymer sciences, analyzing polymer microstructures and optimizing analysis methods. One of her projects included manipulating nanoparticles to maximize pharmaceutical drug delivery. Many of her projects involved improving product quality.

She also gained valuable work experience through internships. At one, she worked on materials research and development at Sintavia, an additive manufacturing company for aerospace and propulsion systems. Her latest internship was at NIKE.

“Working at NIKE World Headquarters was a life-changing experience,” Bishop explained.

photo of lauren bishop in front of NIKE headquarters during her internship

All this involvement has paid big benefits for this busy undergrad.

“I’ve been offered some great opportunities with different companies and am taking time to evaluate where I want to be,” she said. “Companies value students who are involved and I’m excited for having the privilege of being intentional with the job I select.”

She’s still deciding on what the future holds after graduation, but her best advice for students is to get involved, “because community is important.”

“Many of the skills I’ve learned from a professional standpoint have been through my organizational involvement in addition to my work and research. I am thankful to everyone who has encouraged me on this journey and am excited for the new opportunities ahead.”

Finding time to balance chemical engineering courses, activities and involvement was no easy task for Bishop. “But I have learned to live by my calendar and prioritize what was important to me,” she explained. “It’s incredibly rewarding to be involved in so many different areas of the college. The last four years have led to great experiences, and I’ve learned a lot.”

Revitalizing a College Artifact

The Henry Whittemore Library at Framingham State University is one of 50 U.S. libraries newly selected to host Americans and the Holocaust , a traveling exhibition from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association (ALA) that examines the motives, pressures and fears that shaped Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.

Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition coming to Framingham State University’s Henry Whittemore Library

Following a highly successful tour to  50 libraries  from 2021 to 2023, the touring library exhibition— based on the special exhibition of the same name at the Museum in Washington, D.C. — will travel to an additional 50 U.S. libraries from 2024 to 2026, covering wide distances from Hawaii and Alaska to Texas and New Hampshire.

“We are so proud to be selected from a competitive pool of applicants from all across the nation to host this important and powerful exhibition,” said Whittemore Library Dean Millie Gonzalez. “We encourage the campus community and our surrounding community members to come explore it, and we’re excited to be partnering with Framingham High School, Framingham History Center, and other community organizations. The exhibition will challenge people to not only ask ‘what would I have done?’ but also, ‘what will I do?’”

Americans and the Holocaust will be on display at the Whittemore Library, along with a series of related special events, from September 2 – October 15, 2024.

The 1,100-square-foot exhibition examines various aspects of American society: the government, the military, refugee aid organizations, the media and the general public. Drawing on a remarkable collection of primary sources from the 1930s and ’40s, the exhibition tells the stories of Americans who acted in response to Nazism, challenging the commonly held assumptions that Americans knew little and did nothing about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews as the Holocaust unfolded. It provides a portrait of American society that shows how the Depression, isolationism, xenophobia, racism and antisemitism shaped responses to Nazism and the Holocaust.

In addition to the traveling exhibition on loan, Whittemore Library received a $3,000 cash grant to support public programs. The grant also covered one library staff member’s attendance at an orientation workshop at the Museum.

For more information about Americans and the Holocaust and related programming at Framingham State University, visit www.framingham.edu. To learn more about the exhibition, visit ushmm.org/americans-ala .

Americans and the Holocaust: A Traveling Exhibition for Libraries is an educational initiative of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association. The traveling exhibition began by touring to 50 U.S. libraries from 2021 to 2023; due to widespread interest from libraries and communities around the country, a second tour was developed for 2024 to 2026.

Americans and the Holocaust was made possible by the generous support of lead sponsor Jeannie & Jonathan Lavine. Additional major funding was provided by the Bildners — Joan & Allen z”l, Elisa Spungen & Rob, Nancy & Jim; and Jane and Daniel Och. The Museum's exhibitions are also supported by the Lester Robbins and Sheila Johnson Robbins Traveling and Special Exhibitions Fund, established in 1990.

USF selects construction manager for new on-campus stadium

  • April 9, 2024

USF Athletics , University News

By Adam Freeman , University Communications and Marketing

As the University of South Florida football team prepares to host its spring game on Saturday afternoon at Corbett Stadium, the university today announced a significant development in the plans to build a new on-campus home for the Bulls.

Following a competitive bid process, USF has selected the highly experienced team of Manhattan Construction Company, H.J. Russell & Company and DuCon, LLC as the construction manager for the new stadium.

The selected team has worked extensively with college and professional stadiums throughout the country, numerous facilities in the Tampa Bay region and state of Florida and has previously partnered on more than $1.2 billion in projects with USF’s design team, Populous.

“Choosing a construction management team is big step forward in our process to deliver a world-class stadium that will transform the future of our university and the on-campus experience,” said USF Vice President of Athletics Michael Kelly and USF Foundation CEO Jay Stroman, the co-chairs of the stadium planning committee.  “After conducting a thorough review of each proposal we received for the project, we’re excited to get started on our partnership with a team that brings a proven track record of success in Manhattan Construction Company, H.J. Russell & Company and DuCon, LLC.”

Projects the team has worked on include football stadiums for the Dallas Cowboys, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and the ongoing renovations at Florida State University.  Manhattan also provided construction management services for enhancements to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in 2016.

USF’s on-campus stadium is scheduled to open in time for fall 2027.  More information on the project is available here .

FSU Libraries, SGA unveil permanent space for student food donation

Florida State University Libraries , in collaboration with the Student Government Association , the Food for Thought Pantry and the FSU Sustainable Campus , unveiled a permanent food donation bin in the Strozier Library lobby Wednesday, April 10, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Food for Thought Pantry, which relies entirely on donations from various sources, including Second Harvest of the Big Bend , plays a crucial role in supporting students facing food insecurity. All new, unopened, non-perishable food items are accepted as donations and picked up by Sustainable Campus monthly.

“As the number of students utilizing this resource continues to rise, it becomes imperative for the university to explore alternative and effective ways to sustain and fund this essential service, ” said Gale Etschmaier, dean of University Libraries. “T hese bins serve as symbols of compassion, allowing neighbors to share with one another. It is not merely about giving; it is about fostering a culture of care where no one goes hungry.”

Research indicates that addressing food insecurity directly impacts student well-being. Low food security correlates with poor mental health outcomes, and both food insecurity and psychological distress can affect academic performance.

The Food for Thought Pantry, administered by the Department of Student Support and Transitions at FSU, provides a safe space for all enrolled students experiencing food insecurity. Students can visit the Food for Thought Pantry from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the University Center A, Suite 4148 . It offers essential support to those in need.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, the Pantry witnessed significant growth. From Aug. 1, 2022, to April 30, 2023, it served 1,706 students and totaled 9,318 visits. This represents a 76 percent increase in students served and a 139 percent increase in total visits compared to the previous year. Additionally, in 2022-2023, the Pantry adopted an innovative approach, serving 429 unique students through mobile food distribution events across campus.

Donations are accepted during Strozier’s open hours. Students are not allowed to take food directly from the bin; it is only for donations.
