Asia , India

sikkim-trekking-2

The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of India's most spectacular hikes. With awe-inspiring views of the world's highest peaks, this hike is definitely one for your bucket list!

Singalila Ridge Trek

The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of the most spectacular  treks in India  and follows the northern ridge that separates the vast country from that of its smaller neighbor -  Nepal .

As you ascend up onto the ridge itself you're greeted with some of the most impressive vistas on earth. The high  Himalaya region stretches out in front of you as you gaze across at the world's five tallest mountains including Everest , Lhotse, Makalu and Kachenjunga.

Not only do you experience incredible views, you're also greeted with a wide array of flora and fauna along the trek. You'll hike up through mountain forests, past lovely areas of bamboo, camp among rhododendrons and hike high into mountain scrubland zones. Look out for the rare red panda and keep a sharp eye out for bears, boar and barking deer. If you're lucky you might spot some of the colorful pheasants along the route.

On the hike, you'll pass hamlets, teahouses and military check points as you will sometimes be trekking on the Nepalese side of the ridge. The trail is well defined and the trek can either be done with an operator or with a single guide - depending on your experience levels.

Please Note: The trek is moderately difficult due to the high altitude of the ridge which is constantly above 3,000 meters. The ascent to the ridge can be strenuous and we suggest having a good level of stamina to complete this trek. Accommodation is generally camping and the nights get very cold.

Regional Map

The Singalila Ridge is located on the north-south mountain ridge running from northwestern West Bengal through the region of Sikkim in the Indian part of the Himalayas.

Please see map below for details.

Sandakphu and Phalut Trek on Singalila Ridge:

The Sandakphu and Phalut trek, or the shorter Sandakphu trek , is a must to do trek for people looking to explore Darjeeling or Sikkim hills with breathtaking panoramas of Himalayan peaks. Our given itinerary follows the Singalila Ridge from South to North. For this reason, this trek is also called the “ Singalila Ridge Trek” .

sandakphu-phalut-a-himalayan-panoramic-route

About our trail:

Our trail reaches its highest point, Sandakphu, at ~ 3636 m/11926 ft. This is the highest point in West Bengal, in the district of Darjeeling. Phalut is another tabletop on the same ridge that is further north of Sandakphu, almost at the same height of ~ 3620 m. Due to its northerly position, i.e., its proximity to the high mountains, Phalut offers somewhat closer mountain views of the Sikkim and Nepal Himalayas.

One of the finest ridge trek in the Himalayas – Mesmerising sunrise and sunset views

As already said, the trail follows the famous Singalila Ridge, a prominent spur that runs southward from the Kanchenjunga massif. This ridge is the border between India and Nepal in the Eastern Himalayas. The east side of the ridge is India, and Nepal is on the west side. Although not as interior as some of the Sikkim treks that we arrange, this trail is still among one of the most scenically rewarding in the Indian Himalayas.

Below is a satellite map image showing an aerial view of the Singalila Ridge. You can easily see how open the vista is when you are walking along the ridge.

hiking-trail-on-singalila-ridge

You will get spectacular panoramic views of Nepal Himalayas including Kanchendzongha range, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Janu, Chamlang, Baruntse and a host of Sikkim peaks all seen in one stretch. You may absorb the serene “Sleeping Buddha” formation from multiple vantage points following our trail.

Trekking inside the Singalila National Park – the forests of Eastern Himalayas:

The Singalila National park area has rare species like Red Panda and is a birder’s paradise. Flowering of Rhododendrons and Magnolia turn the forest with red, pink and white shades during spring and foliage hue during autumn-fall.

Suggested Sandakphu & Phalut trek Itinerary 2023:

Our route follows the Singalila Ridge, which is the border of India and Nepal. Due to stay restrictions, non-Indians, i.e., foreigners, can’t stay in Nepal homestays or tea houses anymore like the Indians do. So the Indians and foreigners will have different itineraries.

Day 1: Drive from NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport to Chitrey   (~ 2200 m, 7200 ft) – 90 Km – 4 to 5 hours. Shared homestay accommodation. Foreigners can’t stay here, but 3 Km down at Maneybhanjung  (~ 1980 m/6500 ft). Day 2: Trek to Tumling (~ 2900 m/9500 ft) – 9 Km via Meghma ;– 5 to 6 hours. (Foreigners need to stay inside West Bengal, India at Tonglu GTA Trekkers Hut , shared dormitories ~ 3050 m/10000 ft.) Day 3: Trek down to Gairibas (~ 2570 m/8430 ft) and up to  Kalapokhri (~ 3100 m/10200 ft) – 12 Km – 6 to 7 hours. As there is no accommodation in this area inside India, foreigners need to trek directly to Sandakphu (6 Km further ahead) or else stay back at Gairibas GTA Trekkers Hut . Day 4: Trek to Sandakphu (~ 3636 m/11930 ft) – 6 Km – 3 to 4 hours. Stay in a lodge/hotel/trekkers hut, etc. (For foreigners accommodation is at Sandakphu GTA Trekkers Hut ) Day 5: Sandakphu to Phalut – 21 Km – 8 to 9 hours at a moderate pace. Accommodation at GTA Trekkers Hut (shared dormitories) for ALL. Day 6: Wake up early and hike (~ 15/20 mins) to Phalut Top   for the sunrise views. – After breakfast, trek down to Gorkhey – 15 Km – 4 to 5 hours. Lodge or a homestay accommodation. Day 7: Trek to Srikhola bridge via Ramam – 12 Km – 5 hours; Drive to NJP or Bagdogra – 150 km – 6 hours or transfer to Darjeeling – 90 Km – 4 hours, etc.

Infograhics on Singalila Ridge trek:

From the below image you will get a general idea about the Singalila Ridge trek in Darjeeling that includes different variants and possibilities.  Note that foreigners/non Indians must stay within India.

singalila-ridge-infographics-trail-accommodation-in-india-nepal

Foreigners, i.e., non-Indians, must walk and nightstay on the Indian side of Singalila Ridge:

This is a teahouse-style trek that follows the famous Singalila Ridge, forming the border between Darjeeling (West Bengal) in India and Nepal. As a matter of fact, you can get better facilities and services in terms of accommodation, food, comfort, etc. on the Nepal side (homestay, lodge, and hotel).

Whereas on the Indian side, the area falls inside Singalila National Park and is a restricted area. Only basic government-made trekker huts are there along the trek route for accommodation at night. You will have more options for homestays and lodges once you are outside the core area.

Starting in December 2021, Indian authorities are not allowing foreigners/non Indian passport holders to stay in Nepal while walking on the Singalila Ridge. So for foreign nationals, the accommodation options are GTA-operated government huts within Singalila National Park. This is enforced on the spot by the Indian paramilitary personnel stationed at various checkpoints along the trail on the India-Nepal border.

You can’t stay inside Nepal, even if you have a Nepal visa. This is due to the fact that there are no “ passport control ” offices between India and Nepal along the trail.

So it is mandatory for foreigners to stay inside India and make a night halt at the GTA/Govt. Trekkers Hut while trekking inside Singalila National Park.

On the other hand, for Indian citizens, we arrange stays in Nepal teahouses, wherever possible, and their itinerary will be different than that of foreigners.

What are the accommodations during Sandakphu Phalut trek:

This is a “Tea House” trek, i.e we don’t camp inside Singalila National Park but stay in Homestay/Lodge available on the trail. As you should expect on a mountain trail, these are basic accommodation run by the local Nepali/Tibetan families. Rooms are dormitory bed type with triple/quad sharing or more. Beds and blankets are neat and clean. Don’t expect an attached toilet or running hot water anywhere.

Do we camp and stay in a tent?

No we don’t. As a matter of fact, none is supposed to camp within the boundary of Singalila National park. This trail inside national park is designed for years to run a Tea House mode trek, same as its neighbouring Nepal treks. If you prefer a pristine full camping trek, we do have more legitimate options for you. These treks lie further north to Phalut on the Singalila ridge inside Sikkim and  offer closer views of Sleeping Buddha and high mountains of Nepal and Sikkim.  Our less crowded  Phoktey Dara or Singalila Pass Phalut   trek will surely entice you for great camping experiences.

Regarding GTA/Foreigners accommodation on

Phalut has only one accommodation option. The Trekkers Hut is operated by GTA (Gorkha Territorial Administration), an govt. administrative body in the Darjeeling Hills. This can’t be booked online neither you can check availability unless you drop in to their office, either at Gorkha Bhavan, Saltlake Kolkata (near City Centre, Salt Lake) or Darjeeling, Silver Fir building office. More over it has a maximum capacity of 20 beds, and they keep few on hold for guides/porters/staff accompanying trekkers. There is NO private accommodation/lodge at Phalut or vicinity. Due to heavy demand mostly this is full in the season.

Is this trek suitable for the beginners?

Also we have noticed that beginners/first time trekkers are often finding it pretty difficult to cover the 21 Km trail from Sandakphu to Phalut. So considering both we either keep you at Phalut Trekkers Hut or at Sabarkum/Molley, a place 14 Km from Sandakphu on the way to Phalut. This is decided case to case as per each individual group. However the itinerary remains same and you reach Gorkhey via Phalut in case the accommodation is at Sabarkum/Molley.

Alternate shorter and easy Tour – Sandakphu trek:

Though the trail ahead of Sandakphu is Easy considering the terrain, but adding Phalut involves total 6 days of trek covering around 80 Km. Often it can be strenuous if not prepared well. Also beginners as well as experienced trekkers can find it exhausting to reach Phalut, 21 Km from Sandakphu in a day.

However we have started arranging a smaller version of this trail omitting Phalut from the itinerary. This is the shortened version of Singalila ridge trek and called “ Sandakphu Trek ” . The wonderful walk along the ridge is ideal for the beginners/first timers, who want to explore Darjeeling/Sikkim Himalayas. This essentially retains almost all the flavour that the Sandakphu and Phalut produces, certainly the not scenic walk to Phalut! However this is not a showstopper considering the trail is same (initial 3 days of trek) till Sandakphu. Sleeping Buddha, Famous trio (Everest Lhotse, Makalu), and numerous Sikkim and Nepal high Himalayan ranges can be observed.  The descent from Sandakphu to the beautiful village of Gurdum is similar in beauty that of  Phalut to Gorkhey trail. Finally the Sandakphu trek also ends at Srikhola same as the longer duration Phalut trail. Advantage of Sandakphu trek is this trail requires 4 days of trekking and can be done year long apart from the monsoon (June to September). The walk is not strenuous like Phalut and covers around 40 Km in 4 days which is indeed an Easy grade trek and can be completed comfortably by anyone who has got basic physical fitness and will to walk.

We strongly advice to check our “Sandakphu Trek” itinerary, who want a shorter and easier version of this trail without losing much.

A note on the motor route from Maneybhanjung to Sandakphu and Phalut and its impact:

Access to sandakphu phalut trek base (chitrey or maney bhanjung):.

  • From NJP railway station take a shared jeep for Darjeeling and get down at Ghoom railway station. You can get one such shared jeep from Tenzing Norgay Bus terminus/Junction area in Siliguri also. • From NJP/Bagdogra reach Darjeeling Mor (crossing/chowk in Siliguri on the way to Darjeeling) on Hill Cart Road. From here you get shared services for Sukhiapokhri. From Sukhia you can reach Chitrey as mentioned earlier. • While returning things are much easier. There are morning shared services from Srikhola to Siliguri and Darjeeling. For Srikhola there are two vehicles early in the morning at 5:30 am to SIliguri. It takes 6/7 hours to reach Darjeeling Mor in Siliguri (Rs 400 per seat). From here take an auto rickshaw to NJP/Bagdogra.

singalila pass trek

Himalayan Trekkers is a fantastic tour operator that I highly recommend. They had provided an experienced and knowledgeable guide who will take you on the adventure of a lifetime. The treks are well-organized and the food is delicious. I especially appreciated the company’s commitment to sustainability and ethical tourism.

In short, Himalayan Trekkers is a great choice for anyone looking for a safe, enjoyable, and sustainable trekking experience in Sandakphu – Phalut trek route. Special mention: Dawa Drukpa is an awesome guide and Robin is an awesome porter, even better as people. Thanks Himalayan Trekkers.

singalila pass trek

We booked a 7D6N trek to Sandakphu & Phalut, and a driver for the following days to take us to Sikkim. The communication in advance was clear and swift. We had a great guide (Amar) and driver. We can recommend booking your trek through Himalaya Trekkers, but be aware of the more than basic conditions in the GTA huts run by the government, which are mandatory accommodation for foreigners.

Testimonials

The people who know best.

Niru Govender

I had a wonderful time on the trip through the remote and beautiful Garwhal himalays. The Har Ki Dun valley is a worthy destination for any hiker who enjoys seeing snow capped peaks in close range. Our guiding team really helped us appreciate the majestic scenery by making everything so easy for us – taking care of everything from our lugagge, setting up our tents, the delicious meals and even motivation when the trek was hard. I particularly appreciated your expertise , in guiding us through difficult and unpredictable weather, ensuring we ate well and treating all of our little ailments along the route while gently and persistently moving us closer to our destinations. I think you very judiciously managed the team, taking calculated risks with the composition of the team in mind while ensuring we made the most out of the trip. I will certainly not hesitate in recommending you to other people for the duty of care and expertise you showed on our mountain trails and beyond.

Key Geographical Highlights

Daywise itinerary for phoktey dara trek, ▼day 1 arrival day uttarey.

Upon arriving in Bagdogra airport or NJP railway station, our team receives you and then we get on the drive to reach a beautiful hamlet of West Sikkim - Uttarey. In Uttarey, we arrange for your accommodation in a beautiful homestay. We welcome the team with light snacks and easy check-in. Staying in the homestay gives us an opportunity to know and experience the rich local culture and cuisine. Our trekking team meets you in Uttarey and checks your preparation for the trek we start tomorrow. The guides brief the team and we end up the day with a hot tasty dinner and call it a night in a warm cozy bed.

▼Day 2 Trekking Day Acchaley

Today we wake up to a wonderful morning in the beautiful village homestay in Uttarey. The fresh blowing wind and a cool bright day will definitely energize you to take on the day. After breakfast, we start our trek. The route for the day winds up through the dense forest towards Acchaley. It's an easy trek today to start our long journey toward Phoktey Dara and Phalut. We pass by deep forest giving us ample opportunity for wildlife sightings.

▼Day 3 Trekking Day Kalijhar

Second day into the trek and the route slowly shifts gears upwards. The trail is beautiful with occasional openings in the middle of dense forest. Nature and wildlife will be at their best today. The route might be smaller but steep.

▼Day 4 Exploration Day Kalijhar

Today is a complete rest day and we live our day to the fullest. Early morning we wake up to witness the magical sunrise from the top of Phoktey Dara. It takes about 40 minutes to reach the Phoktey Dara top and the view of the Sleeping Buddha is considered the best from Phoktey Dara. Sleeping Buddha formation is all about the angle you see it from and Phoktey Dara presents the best angle to realize the Sleeping Buddha formation. The entire day is in our hands and we spend it wisely to our heart's contentment. We are right in the middle of a dense forest with abundant wildlife. Since it's a very less-done trail, sighting wildlife is very much possible if you maintain proper forest decorum.

▼Day 5 Pass Crossing Day Phalut

Today will be a long day and tiring day as we negotiate the Singalila Pass to enter Toriphuley and the beautiful pasture land of Phalut in West Bengal. The day's trek will involve a lot of climbing, descending, and then again climbing up to Phalut. The views throughout are amazingly beautiful and will keep you motivated throughout the trek with its charm. Sleeping Buddha is visible much closer and uninterrupted unless clouds decide to play a hide and seek game with you. Be prepared mentally for today and plan your water and food efficiently.

▼Day 6 Trekking Day Gorkhey

Phalut is an excellent place to stay the sunrise views from Phalut is just mesmerizing. It's just 10 minute's walk away from the trekker's hut. We wake up early morning to enjoy the magical sunrise view from Phalut Top. After spending good time for the sunrise, we come down back to the trekker's hut, have our breakfast, and leave for Gorkhey

Today's trek towards Gorkhey is a very easy one and should take about 3 hours with an average walking speed. It is a complete descend route and gets steeper in a few sections. The route passes through dense jungle and is very beautiful and joyful. Many wild plant species can be found here. Often we will come across openings in the dense forest which makes a good resting spot for some conversations and snacking or water breaks.

Gorkhey is a very beautiful village surrounded all around by mountains and forests. We spend our night here in a cozy homestay. It's time for a hot shower. Gorkhey also has a stream flowing around with lots of bird-sighting to be done.

▼Day 7 Departure Day Bagdogra

Today our trek ends. The trek is very simple as well. Initially, we have a little climbing to do for the first 15 minutes after which the route gets gentle upon reaching Samanden village. Samanden is a beautiful village where we spend some time for photographs. It's like a tabletop in the mountains. After Samanden the route climbs gently for a while with occasional ascends and descends until it reaches Rammam. Rammam is a small village on the way and from here we can get a glance at the roadhead in Srikhola. From Rammam, Sepi takes any time between 1.5 to 2 hours to reach. We break for lunch in Sepi.

After lunch in Sepi, we head towards Siliguri / Bagdogra/ Darjeeling as planned before the trek. A beautiful journey comes to an end with a promise for even better memories on next journey.

The Phoktey Dara - Singalila Pass Trek is one of the best in the Northeast and Sikkim. It's an easy trek that can be done even by beginners. Compared to other treks in the Himalayas, it is very uncrowded and one of the least-done treks in India. This trek boasts the rich cultural experience of Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Nepal in one go. On the other hand, this trek also offers the view of 4 out of 5 highest peaks in the World, which are - Mt. Everest ( 8850m, 1st), Kanchenjunga ( 8586m, 3rd), Mt. Lhotse (8516m, 4th) and Makalu (8481m, 5th). Apart from Sandakphu - Phalut trek, this is the only trek that boasts of this grand panoramic view including Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga together in a single view.

The trail that starts from Uttarey, in the circumference of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, swirls up through the dense canopy of forest and beautiful openings amidst it creating some beautiful campsites. It is abundant in wildlife and vivid flora. During the springs, many species of rhododendrons and other wildflowers color up the trail. There are many varieties of birds that dwell in this National Park which makes it a bird-watcher's delight. The distinctively remote trail is lit up by the energy and happy-mindedness of the locals, some of whom accompany us on the trek as our support staff. You also witness the mixture of Tibetan, Nepali, Sikkimese, Subba, and Lepcha cultures in this entire trek route in form of its people, their way of living, and architecture.

In short, this is one of the best treks to be done in the Eastern Himalayas.

Phoktey Dara Trek - Why Its A Must-Do

  • The Phoktey Dara trek boasts the best views of the Sleeping Buddha formation, which is formed by Mount Kanchenjunga and 16 other popular peaks aligned in such a way that it appears like a giant Lord Buddha sleeping over the clouds.
  • The Phoktey Dara trek also provides the rare opportunity to view 4 of Worlds highest 8000-meter peaks together in a single frame. The peaks are  Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. • Not just this. The Phoktey Dara trek offers the panorama of more than 26 peaks of Bhutan, Sikkim, and Nepal. Chomolhari, Narsing, Jupono, Tenchenkhang, Pandim, Simvo, Goecha Peak, Forked Peak, Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna, Frey, Rathong, Koktang, South Kabru, North Kabru, 3 sister peaks, Everest, Makalu, Chamling, Chomolonzo, Lhotse, Nuptse, Baruntse, Macchapucchare, etc
  • The Phoktey Dara trek goes through the dense jungle of rhododendrons, magnolias, and many other wildflowers, some of which are only to be found in these mountain ranges of the Himalayas. Rhododendrons and magnolias bloom from late March to early May and the entire route is mystified by their color and fragrance.
  • The Phoktey Dara trek is home to numerous species of wild birds and a lot of wild animals. Since this trek is less frequented by human beings, it makes one of the ideal treks to sight wildlife.

  • Sandakphu Phalut Trek and Phoktey Dara trek boasts similar views. However, the major difference lies in the fact while Sandakphu Phalut is a homestay trek, Phoktey Dara on the other hand is a mix of camping and homestay trek. 3 of the 6 nights on the Phoktey Dara trek are full of camping in the natural environment right in the middle of the forest surrounded by the tall mountains of Sikkim and Nepal.
  • While you can still camp on the Sandakphu Phalut trek, the ambiance is spoilt by neighboring homestays and occasional landrover driving beside the camps. Phoktey Dara trek offers a pure camping experience.
  • If homestays and tea-houses are one of the plus factors of the Sandakphu trek, the Phoktey Dara trek too boasts of it for 3 nights. Hence you get to experience both of them.
  • While the Sandakphu Phalut trek is a borderline ridge trek and 3 nights on it are spent in Nepal and the remaining 3 in West Bengal, the Phoktey Dara trek touches the border but all the accommodations are in Sikkim and West Bengal. Though we mention this point as a difference, I must also say that Mother Nature does not understand borders. That's only for humans.
  • Sandakphu trek being a tea-house trek is cheaper compared to the Phoktey Dara trek which is a camping trek and also involves resources from 2 points. Guides/Cooks/Helpers and Horses hired from Uttarey need to be paid for their return journey without utilizing their service while we proceed towards Phalut with another guide and other resources from this region.

About Singalila to Sandakphu Trek

If you ask any trekker about the best trek in the Eastern Himalaya, which is a complete package of everything good and beautiful, then their obvious answer will be Singalila Sandakphu trek. With the mountains decorated with green alpine trees, magnificent monasteries soaked up in rich cultural history, hues of flowers, verdant paddy valley, and emerald forest, Singalila Sandakphu trek is ideal for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The trek also offers breath-taking views of the Himalayan range from Cho Yo to Kanchenjunga.

Trekking to the Sandakphu peak is somewhere like experiencing a sweet paint, as the journey is going to be difficult but the views will be fantastic. The trekking expedition will start from Tonglu. After covering the forest in search of Red Panda and the Tragoapn, trekkers will reach Garibas. Further, the trekkers will proceed to Sandakphu from where one can feast their eyes on the peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Baruntse, Chamling, Chomolonzo, Machapucchare and other peaks of the Annapurna range. After spending some time in Sandakphu, trekkers will pass through the mountain pass to reach Phalut. Beautiful view of Himalaya never goes out of sight throughout the journey. Next destination in the trekking trail is Rammam, probably one of the best places in Himalaya to behold sunset. After descending through the Srikhola villages, trekkers will visit Rimbik, the final destination of the trek. Embark on a journey to Singalila Sandakphu Trek, and witness a wonderland where the beauty of nature is at its best.

Best Time to Visit Singalila to Sandakphu Trek

Mid-March to June end & Mid-September to Mid-November

Spring is the best time to go for trekking as wildflowers and rhododendron are in its fullest bloom. Also, trekkers can explore the place during the monsoon too, but there is a higher risk of the landslide during that season.

Trekkers should avoid going for trekking during the monsoon as the trails get slippery and roads remain blocked due to torrential rains. In the winter season, the trekking is often impossible as it snows heavenly and trails become inaccessible and weather quite foul.

Since trekking requires covering large distances, usually by walking up and down hills and mountains, it is necessary that the trekkers should be physically fit. Altitude acclimatisation is thoroughly necessary as the air gets lighter and with lower oxygen beyond Singalila.

Where is the Singalila to Sandakphu Trek?
