A wonderful tour with expert guides. The hotel in Palermo noisy due ghetto blasters on weekend nights and sirens, horns etc in rooms facing the square. Taormina was the highlight for me, and I will stream “The White Lotus” as soon as I can.

Amazing food made by Emilio every breakfast and dinner! Only one restaurant that we went to (recommended by Emilio) could compare in quality to Emilio's cooking. Emilio didn't keep any cooking secrets from us, so we look forward to trying to make some of his recipes ourselves!

Private Sicily Food & Wine Lovers Tour Tour

Private Sicily Food & Wine Lovers Tour

This is a MUST for any foodie. Our guides were amazing and it was nice to have a true foodie tour while still learning a lot and having a ton of fun. While each day was filled with beauty and delicious food, my favorites were being by Mt. Etna (because, it's Mt. Etna!!) at the winery and farmhouse, then the cooking class in Taormina. Our chef was so kind and always smiling! It's a truly wonderful experience. The wineries we visited gave us that feeling that life can't get any better. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that my husband and I will never forget. Everyday was a new and exciting memory. I didn't stop smiling throughout the whole trip. What really stuck out were the people and how kind everyone was. They really wanted you to have an amazing time...job well done, everyone!

Great Tour ! We were able to visit a new area of the Apulia region each day with the assistance of Emilio, a superb guide and chef. The lovely olive farm then treated us to his culinary delights each evening. Cosimo was the most knowledgable guide, friendly and extremely helpful. Matera is also a wonderful and fascinating place! It was also very easy to get in touch with Omar. Always available even at late evening. What an amazing journey. I would strongly advise using this business.

Charming Sicily Food & Wine Small Group Tour - 8 days

Overall our tour was wonderful. We had a great time. Denise, especially was a very good guide, very knowledgable and personable. The cooking class and our Palermo Street Food tour was, probably my favorites. A few areas that could have been improved upon: - A little more communication prior to the tour would have been reassuring. In this day of fraud it is a little unnerving to send all that money into the internet and not get much of a response. - The final communication, our itinerary, was a definite problem. We were told by Tour Radar that we would receive it 10-14 days before we left. The tour operator (ClickTours/Mossimo) told us we would receive it 8 days before we left. I finally called Tour Radar 6 days before we left

Hotel room was large and comfortable = 5* Hotel location was difficult : NO buses, NO subway close by. We had to walk a LOT , even to reach meeting points for daily tours !! (2*) Staff was VERY friendly and helpful. (5*) TOUR to POMPEI / VESUVIO was excellent, considering the conditions... Excellent LUNCH and wine testing (5*) We did the VESUVIO hike, all the way to the TOP ! (5*) TOUR of NAPOLI was good. / We saw many more places, and took the subway (5*) Note : we had problems with the street food . Difficult to find good, relaxing places to have dinner in NAPOLI. ..Next time we will consult a TOUR GUIDE BOOK.

Everything about our tour was just amzingly great... from the tours, to the arrangements, to our chaufered driven Mercedes. One suggestion about our last stay at Locandia Marquesi di Alfieri. It is a very small village, and no nearby restaurant open on Mondays. Without a vehicle, it can be difficult, so it would be good to inform your clients. Also, the goodbye dinner was at Blue Rose, which would require a walk down to and back up the steep road. At night it can be a challenge and even dangerous, with no sidewalks. I would suggest either Osteria il Re degli Ignoranti or Ristorante Concordia, which are much closer to the Locandia Marquesi di Alfieri Hotel.

What people love about food & culinary tours in italy.

I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!
Continued.. Besides both Carla and Emilios own knowlege and history of each place they had Profesional guides to take you around to the other places. Nice to be in a private car. Great food like I said before. Emilio really takes care and you can see the passion in every dish he makes. Very well put together tour. Loved my stay at the farmhouse learning about the olive trees. Overall a Wonderful experience during my week in brindisi. Will visit again! Crystal

Frequently asked questions, experience an immersive culinary tour of italy.

There are few gastronomic regions in the world that rival Emilia-Romagna. Located in the northern part of Italy, this area offers a wealth of culinary delights. Its fertile soil is ideal for cultivating prized ingredients like Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and prosciutto di Parma – not to mention one of the finest wines in the world. The region is also well known for its rich traditions of quality food production.  Perhaps its most famous export is authentic balsamic vinegar. If your balsamic wasn’t made in Modena, then it’s not the real deal!

To this day, many of Emilia-Romagna’s cities are still surrounded by vineyards and olive groves that produce incredible local wines and sumptuous oils. By living off the land, the Emilia-Romagnesi have perfected their cuisine over hundreds of years.

Italian Culinary Adventures takes you on your gourmet tour of Emilia-Romagna, featuring the best food and wine Italy has to offer. The region’s gastronomic excellence can be attributed to its rich history of artisanship – a legacy that dates back before Roman times. Our hosts have been traveling to the region for years, fueled by a passion for the unique history and culture that characterize the incredible food.

Preparing for an Italian Culinary Tour

Once you’ve booked an Italian culinary tour with Italian Culinary Adventures, it’s time to start preparing. Being away from home for one week requires some planning. Especially when you are in a country you’ve never visited. Be sure you pack the following in preparation for your culinary tour in Modena Italy:

  • A pocket USB charger for your phone
  • An umbrella
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Clothes appropriate for the weather the time of year you visit Italy
  • An open mind, heart, and mouth!

What Can You Bring Home from Italy?

No trip to Italy is complete without bringing home something to commemorate it, especially if you can bring home a sampling of the food you enjoyed. Since you will be visiting Modena, Bologna, and Parma, make sure you bring home Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and balsamic vinegar. Getting these coveted specialties from their native towns in Emilia-Romagna is the ultimate souvenir.

How to Enjoy Your Italian Culinary Tour

Well, let’s start by saying- this is the easy part! Once you arrive in Italy, the first day will allow you to check into your hotel, relax a bit from the travel, and begin to explore the picturesque city of Modena. The next handful of days will include tantalizing tours through restaurants, markets, farms, wineries, and other areas of the iconic Emilia-Romagna region. This isn’t just a standard food and wine tour. It’s a true cultural immersion experience that will authentically show you the best of everything the region has to offer.

We recommend getting plenty of rest each night and wearing comfortable walking shoes for the tour. We are on our feet for a lot of time, exploring every unique niche of the Emilia-Romagna region.

Italy’s Treasures of Bergamo & Lake Iseo

Italy’s Treasures of Bergamo & Lake Iseo

What we love: Because Claudia grew up in Bergamo and her relatives still live there, we feel most connected to this historic walled city, where we spend most of our personal family time in Italy.

  • Explore Lombardy's culinary culture, inspired by the bounty of the surrounding countryside.
  • Stay in a restored medieval fortress in Bergamo, famous for charming narrow streets and picturesque squares.
  • Share traditional specialties like Acquarello carnaroli rice, balsamic vinegar, and the distinctive regional cheese, Grana Padano.
  • Cruise the hidden gem of Lake Iseo, situated in the Franciacorta wine region, producing some of Italy’s best sparkling wines.
  • Settle into Milan’s stylish Navigli neighborhood for a classic aperitivo in a canal side bar, followed by a traditional Lombardy dinner.

Best of all, experience the cooking classes of award-winning chefs and friends Dominic Piperno and Jeff Michaud, as they reveal the secrets of the area’s quintessential flavors, and even arrange a dinner with Jeff's mother-in-law, a true Italian home cook.

Artisanal Italy in Modena, Bologna, & Parma

Artisanal Italy in Modena, Bologna, & Parma

What we love: This relatively overlooked region introduced us to the legacy of craftsmanship in its heritage foods, and the authentic character of Lambrusco, its delicately sparkling red wine.

  • Visit the village of Savigno, meeting artisans who carry on family traditions, including Guido of Bottega del Macellaio, transforming the local Mora pig and Bianca Modenese cow into mouthwatering cured meats and steaks for 3 generations.
  • Walk the streets of Modena, encountering Mercato Albinelli, the city’s oldest covered market, redesigned in Art Nouveau style.
  • Learn about Italy’s luxury racing automobile at the Enzo Ferrari Museum with classic models on display.
  • Become acquainted with the Spigaroli family, makers of prosciutto’s unsung cousin, culatello, sharing lunch at their Michelin-star restaurant, dedicated to the Po River territory’s culinary heritage.

Best of all, join the sfogline (the masters of fresh pasta) in the traditional art of pasta making at their legendary school in Bologna. Assisted by chefs Colin Lynch and Jeff Michaud, learn how to use a matterello (or wooden pin) to roll out the yolk-rich dough and then shape regional specialties like Tortellini, Tortelloni, and Tagliatelle.

What we love: We launched our La Via Gaia trips here, taking over a farmhouse to welcome our very first guests, and enjoying a concert evening spent under the stars at Verona’s Arena, a Roman amphitheater built in 30AD.

  • Meet Veneto wine masters and learn to appreciate the difference between regional superstars, Amarone and Valpolicella.
  • Appreciate the magic of Chiaretto di Bardolino, the rosata/rose famously produced in Alpine-Mediterranean environment of Lake Garda.
  • Find yourself square in in the middle of Verona’s Piazza delle Erbe, crossroads of city life.
  • Spend Sunday Supper with an olive oil producer for the Spiedo ritual of slow spit-cooking meat, among the world’s oldest techniques.

Best of all, play a part in making authentic creations with award-winning chefs Jeff Michaud and Missy Robbins in intimate classes designed to give you first-hand experience.

The Good Life in Piemonte & the Langhe

The Good Life in Piemonte & the Langhe

What we love: Every year our family returns here, to the town of Alba known for its white truffles, to drink in spectacular vistas, romantic hill towns, wonderful food, and finely crafted wines.

  • Roam through world-famous wine regions, The Langhe and Roero's small DOCG wine district, to the hills of historic Monferrato.
  • Buzz through vineyards on a Vespa, or "Wasp", icon of stylish Italian design.
  • Experience robust Barolo and Barbaresco, produced from the intensely aromatic Nebbiolo grape in bottlings from top winemakers.
  • Venture into the wild patches of forest on a truffle hunting escapade.
  • Discover what a cheese refiner does in the storage caves where flavor happens.
  • Float above vine covered hillsides and storybook villages in a sunrise balloon ride over Barolo, the heart of the Piedmont region.

Best of all, learn about Piemonte's unique cuisine in dinners at trattorias, Michelin-star restaurants, and in two memorable cooking classes, held by award-winning chefs and friends, Nicholas Elmi and Jeff Michaud and discover that, here, every meals tells a story.

Genuine Living in Piemonte Wine Region

Genuine Living in Piemonte Wine Region

What we love: We could not pass the opportunity to travel alongside Anthony Giglio and dive even deeper in this amazing wine region. So this year we return to Piemonte twice! Sleepy villages, hillsides blanketed in grapevines, pasta dusted with shaved truffles, and wines that are some of the finest of the world.

  • Venture into the wild patches of forest on a truffle hunting mission.
  • Roam through world-famous wine regions, from The Langhe and Roero's small DOCG wine district, to the hills of historic Monferrato.
  • Taste the lush, buttery mouthfeel and a depth of flavor of Giorgio Cravero's Parmigiano Reggiano, a fifth generation cheese refiner in Bra.

Best of all, learn about Piemonte's unique cuisine in menus specially curated by the best chefs of the region and expertly paired by wine connoisseur Anthony Giglio, and in two fun filled cooking classes with award-winning chef Jeff Michaud.

What our fellow adventurers have to say

You feel like a true family member everywhere you go. Winemakers, cheesemakers, prosciutto makers, chefs, farmers, agriturismo proprietors, musicians all welcome you with very generous open arms like you've known them forever to share their talents, secrets. Their passion for what they do is contagious as is Jeff's love of Italy and his infectious smile and ability to connect everyone in the group to each other and bring out the adventurous spirit in all of us. Already booked another trip for next year!

The trip we took to Piemonte exceeded my expectations. It was clear from the start that at every place we went, the chef, owner, guide had a deep relationship with Jeff and they all went out of their way to make the trip one of the most memorable I have ever taken. La Via Gaia carefully put together the right blend and flow of activities to make every day perfect. I wouldn't change a thing

LA VIA GAIA highly curated experience in Piemonte was executed flawlessly with Jeff whisking us from cheese caves to wineries to unique dining experiences that would typically only be available to those in-the-know. His knowledge combined with command of the language and culture enables a plunge into Italian culture that cannot be obtained elsewhere. Bring your appetite, sense of adventure, and passion for luxury meets farm to table. Highly recommended...!

While over the top gastronomic experiences were expected and delivered what was most surprising was the laughter and friendships that flowed in even greater quantities that the exceptional wines and will last far longer.

This was one of the most remarkable trips we have ever taken. What made it so special was Jeff's over-sized, charming personality and the personal touches that went into the trip. From his intimate knowledge of the Bergamo & Lake Garda area's wineries, cheese makers & restaurants, the way he related to & looked out for the needs of everyone on the trip, to the extraordinarily special times like lunch at his mother-in-law Pina's to eating a home-cooked meal with the family that runs an olive oil business. Loved it all!

A private trip with La Via Gaia in Piemonte was an adventure I didn't even know I was missing! I was hesitant to go on an expensive trip with my colleagues but after the amazing comradery, wineries with views, a cheese tour/tasting, beautiful balloon ride, truffle hunting, vespa and convertible fiat driving, three Michelin restaurants, chef led cooking classes, shopping in Milan, Turin and Alba, incredible local restaurants, three amazing guides, and lots of fun I deem this trip priceless. The warmth exuded by Jeff and Claudia Michaud, and their guest Sommelier Matteo Donadoni added to a jam-packed itinerary (with some relax time included). Anyone can go to Northern Italy but these three shared their love of Italy with all of us.

La Via Gaia's culinary and wine tour is not to be missed. Chef Jeff Michaud and his beautiful wife sparkle as they share their love of all things Italian. Days are filled with private tours of wineries and a Parmigiano-Reggiano aging cave, a hot air balloon ride, a drive through the gorgeous Piemontese countryside, and a tour of Turin. The meals include simple regional dishes shared by local cooks, dinner made by the group participants during a cooking lesson at a winery, and spectacular dinners prepared by Michelin starred restaurants. Truly fantastico- grazie!

La Via Gaia has taken us on 2 unique and unforgettable trips filled with amazing food, wine and experiences. The key is Jeff Michaud’s infectious love of Italy, its people, its culinary traditions, and Italian life in general. The warm relationships he has built over the years with chefs, wine makers and shop owners flow onto the group and make us feel we are cared for in a way we have never experienced with any other trip.

Jeff and Claudia have thoughtfully created a traveling and eating experience that opens the window into the world of Northern Italy. It builds on their personal relationships and experiences, accumulated over many years of living in there. It is not a sterile tour, one lived out of a bus. Rather it is meeting the people that make Italy come to life on a daily basis.

Jeff and Claudia have created an experience like no other for folks who are truly passionate about food and wine. Jeff is the consummate host and, for one week, you are part of his family which includes not only your fellow travelers, but all of the amazing artisan producers and talented chefs that go to great lengths to make your time with them very special and memorable. Jeff's passion for everything culinary, along with his well established relationships, are what make this trip unique. This is more than a culinary tour - this is an immersion into the very best of what Italy has to offer.

Italy Real Food Adventure

8 days | uncover the secrets of fresh italian cuisine.

Try your hand at pasta sauce making in Bologna, Italy

Italians are the masters of creating simple dishes that burst with flavour. Inspired by nonnas’ kitchens all over the country, this food is regional, seasonal and as fresh as possible. On this eight-day food-focused adventure through everybody’s favourite culinary hub, you’ll discover that pizza and pasta are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the diverse array of unforgettable street eats, meals and cicchetti from the postcard-perfect Venice to Rome, where medieval meets modern. Delight in local wine, fresh produce, homemade dinners and seasonal favourites in San Gimignano, Tuscany and Bologna.

Trip overview

  • Stay in a traditional Tuscan farmhouse near San Gimignano, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees, and tour the grounds, indulging in tastings of their local wines and rich organic olive oil.
  • Take a cooking class and watch a demonstration of how Bologna pasta is made right in the heart of this culinary namesake before sitting down to enjoy the fruits (or pasta sheets) of your labour for dinner with your host.
  • Swap stories with a Roman local as you feast on seasonal dishes, homecooked for your group for dinner right in their home.
  • See Italy’s iconic sights, like the canals of Venice, the romantic streets of Rome and the UNESCO World Heritage Site in San Gimignano.
  • Find foodie bliss with a food tour that lets you taste all the regional highlights, like gelato, cicchetti, pasta, vinegar, cheese, seasonal fruit and veg and organic meats.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Cooperativa Coraggio. Donations help them regenerate 22 hectares of unused public land to create local jobs and produce organic food in Italy.
  • The cuisine of Italy includes a lot of meat and seafood. For vegetarians and vegans, we recommend reviewing the itinerary and inclusions to ensure that you will be able to fully participate and enjoy this trip. We also have many other trips to Italy which can accommodate a range of dietary requirements.
  • The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Trains are comfortable and all have toilets but can be quite busy. You'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.

Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. Your adventure starts in the iconic city of Venice. If you arrive early, take some time to get lost in the narrow cobblestone streets and spacious piazzas, crossing the tiny bridges to find shops, markets, galleries and churches. Stroll past St Mark’s Square, the Campanile and the Doges Palace. Cross the Rialto and admire the Bridge of Sighs. You’ll have a welcome meeting tonight at 6 pm. After, head out for a welcome aperitivo – the spritz and the bellini are local favourites. Venice's distinctive culinary heritage goes back to ancient times and features rich risottos, saline baccala (salted cod) and creamy polenta. If you're hungry, follow your leader to an atmospheric restaurant for your first introduction to Venetian flavours.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Venice - Welcome Aperitivo

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

It's an early start today. Walk down to the canals and watch farmers unload their produce from canal boats, ready to be sold at Venice's famous Rialto markets. This tradition is more than 1000 years old. Next, you’ll swing past the fish market, where the day’s catch might come directly from the Venetian lagoon – the enclosed bay of the Adriatic Sea. Finish with an Italian cafe alongside the market. You'll also be treated to a specialty dessert of the region – tiramisu. The afternoon is free for your own exploration. In the evening, discover the Venetian answer to tapas on a cicchetti crawl through the city's fabulous bacari (wine bars). Snacking is an important pastime in Venice, with many people stopping for cicchetti both before and after meals.

During your tour, you will stroll through the decadent interior with your informative guide to witness 500 years of history and architecture.

What's Included:

Alba – Learn the Art of Creating World-Famous Gelato

After a delicious breakfast and a restful night's sleep, you will continue your adventure. Once you have had your fill of Italian espresso and pastries, your private driver will transfer you to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Following your introduction to Renaissance art, you will embark on a tour of the Piedmont countryside with your driver. During this tour, you will leave the city behind and venture to the clear air and rolling hills. You will be escorted to the town of Asti, where you will attend a professional gelato-making class. Afterward, your driver will lead you a little further to the beautiful town of Alba, where you will spend the next two nights.

Alba – Venture through Piedmont on a Truffle Hunting Expedition

Your morning in Alba will begin as you partake in the local tradition by enjoying a unique treasure hunt with a truffle seeker, who is known as a trifulau , and their special hunting dogs. During this experience, you will comb through the dense woods and watch the dogs as they run back and forth, sniffing out the region’s edible gold. The dogs will indicate to the trifulau when they catch the scent of the truffle, and when they do, the truffle seeker will eagerly begin to dig in the dirt. Your truffle hunting experience will be followed by a sampling of local wines that are specifically matched with traditional dishes of Piedmont in addition to a dining experience that highlights the unique flavors of the truffles.

Parma – Observe the Production of Parmesan Cheese at a Local Dairy

This morning, you will be transferred in a luxury car through the Piedmont countryside to the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. Before you settle in to your luxurious accommodation in Parma, your driver will stop at one of the region’s prized Parmesan Cheese factories. Stepping foot into a local dairy farm, known as a caseificio , will be the best way to immerse yourself in Parma’s renowned gastronomy and culture. A master-cheesemaker will warmly greet you and enthusiastically explain the intricate process of crafting milk into a sharp and delectable cheese. Your private tour guide will then lead you through the factory to witness the entire process from beginning to end.

Parma – Savor Unprecedented Cuisine on a Bespoke Walking Tour

This morning, you will begin a customized walking tour through the city. Your expert guide will lead you along the charming streets that are teeming with merchants and a staggering number of Italian delicacies. As you walk under the long shadows of 900-year-old buildings, your guide will provide you with samples of various types of prosciutto di parma . Afterward, your guide will lead you through some of the famed buildings that sit in the city center. You will follow your guide and enter the grand doors of the Piazza del Duomo, which is a 12th-century, Romanesque cathedral that is situated next to a marble Baptistery.

Bologna – Hand-Craft Fresh, Delicious Pasta with a Renowned Chef

Today, you will embark on an enviable gastronomy tour through two of Italy’s famed cities. Your personal driver will greet you at your hotel before whisking you through the winding backstreets of the Emilia-Romagna countryside. In Moderna, at an authentic acetaia, you will have the privilege to indulge in a private tour that will allow you to witness how traditional balsamic vinegar is produced. Tonight, you will be taught how to craft authentic Italian pasta. You will first step into the kitchen, don an apron, and begin to learn the art of making fresh, homemade pasta from an expert chef.

Bologna – Wander through Medieval Streets on a Private Tour

Your morning will begin with a delicious breakfast. Your customized walking tour of the city will begin as you tread in the footsteps of the ancient Etruscans who indulged in business and politics in the large Piazza Maggiore. Street musicians will strum their instruments, swaying back and forth to their enchanting melody and serenading all who pass. As evening approaches and your tour concludes, you will see waiters in black aprons and bowties busily setting up tables in the narrow alleyways. Upon a quick inspection of the evenings’ dishes, you will know that your most challenging task for the day will be choosing which restaurant to dine in for your final meal in Bologna.

Venice – Revel in an After-Hours Tour of Glorious St. Mark’s Basilica

This morning, you will enjoy breakfast at your hotel before transferring by train to the romantic city of Venice. In Venice, concrete streets will be replaced by peaceful canals, and the iconic architecture beautifully and uniquely intertwines Baroque and Islamic elements. Your private guide will meet you at the train station to usher you to your luxurious accommodation in the heart of the city. After you settle in, you will embark on a walking tour through the twisting maze of narrow streets. Charming, stone bridges cross the narrow canals, faithfully interconnecting the 118 total islands that make up this incredible city.

Venice – Cruise the Grand Canal on a Private Gondola Ride

Following breakfast, you will join your private guide, who will show you Venice from an entirely unique perspective. The gondolier will push away from the dock, and you will be floating through the city the way the extremely wealthy did in the 18th century. In the afternoon, you will join a local expert, who will walk you through the backstreets of Venice on an authentic food tour of local eateries while you simultaneously learn about and taste Northeastern Italy’s delicious cuisine. During your tour, you can sample authentic Venetian specialties, such as a seafood-based risotto or a dish that is known as bigoli in salsa , which consists of thick strands of whole-wheat pasta.

Venice – Depart for Home

Venice begins to wake up long before the sun rises. The fishing boats will quietly rumble along the canals, not allowing the dim, morning light to delay their catch. You can have a leisurely morning and enjoy your breakfast from the comforts of your suite. As the sun begins glistening on the water, you can indulge in one more stroll through the crooked streets to visit your favorite corner of this colorful city. Shortly after, you will meet your private driver at the boat dock and be transferred to Marco Polo Airport for your flight home.

What is Famous in Rome as Far as Food?

Perhaps the most celebrated is pasta carbonara, a simple yet indulgent dish featuring eggs, Pecorino Romano cheese, cured pork, and black pepper. Equally renowned are Roman pizzas, particularly Pizza Bianca—a focaccia-style pizza that’s crispy on the outside and soft in the center.

Not to be missed are the succulent Saltimbocca alla Romana, veal cutlets wrapped in prosciutto and sage, and the delectable supplì, fried rice balls oozing with mozzarella. These dishes, along with artichokes alla Romana and cacio e pepe, among others, comprise the essence of Rome’s storied gastronomy.

What are the Best Foods to Eat in Rome?

gastronomy tour italy

When dining in Rome, it’s essential to indulge in the city’s signature dishes to truly experience its culinary culture. Some must-eat foods include:

  • Cacio e Pepe: A minimalist yet mouthwatering pasta dish that perfectly balances the sharpness of Pecorino Romano with the bite of freshly cracked black pepper.
  • Roman Artichokes (Carciofi alla Romana): These artichokes are braised with herbs and olive oil until they are tender and packed with flavor.
  • Maritozzi: Delicately sweet buns filled with whipped cream, a classic Roman breakfast treat.
  • Gelato: No visit to Rome is complete without sampling the rich, creamy goodness of authentic Italian gelato in a myriad of flavors.
  • Tiramisu: This iconic Italian dessert, made with layer upon layer of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone cheese, is a sweet ending to any meal.

Do You Tip on Meals in Rome?

gastronomy tour italy

Tipping is not mandatory in Rome, nor is it expected since the waitstaff do not rely on tips as a source of their wages . However, if you receive great service, you will notice that many people will round the bill up or leave a couple of euros on the table. It’s the polite thing to do, and we always do it.

Contrary to the United States where 15-20% gratuity is often expected since waitstaff are constantly waiting on you, Italians don’t typically leave a tip since their job is complete once they’ve delivered your beverage and meal.

It’s normal to have to wave down someone to pay your bill, so keep this in mind when dining in Rome.

What Should I Bring on a Roman Food Tour?

When attending a food tour, it’s a good idea to come prepared with the following items:

  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking a lot and Rome’s streets are less-than-ideal for heels, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
  • Sun protection: Rome can get very hot and is often sunny in the summer months, so bring along sunscreen and a hat or sunglasses.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial when exploring a new city, and many food tours will offer water, but it’s always best to bring your own refillable bottle (this LifeStraw Bottle is my favorite and always comes with me!)
  • Cash for tipping: It’s not required to tip on food tours in Rome, but if your guide provides you with a great time then having some cash on hand to show your appreciation can be a kind gesture.
  • An empty stomach: Make sure not to eat too much before the tour since you’ll want to leave room to try all the delicious dishes!

Do Rome Food Tours Include Wine Tastings?

Many food tours in Rome, Italy understand the importance of how a fine wine complements the culinary experience of Italian cuisine, and thus quite a few include tastings of select local wines.

However, not all tours include a wine tour as well, so if this is something you’re interested in then be sure to check out The Roman Food Tour in Trastevere with Free-Flowing Fine Wine !

Most food tours in Rome last between 3-4 hours, depending on the tour you choose . Some may be longer or shorter, but this is generally enough time to experience a variety of dishes and explore different neighborhoods in the city.

Be prepared for plenty of walking and stopping at multiple restaurants, markets, and shops along the way! Overall, it’s a fun and delicious way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Food Tours Italy: Which Italy Destination Will Best Scratch Your Food Itch?

Food Tours Italy

When one ponders over Italian cuisine, immediate visions arise: the fragrances of fresh basil, simmering tomato sauces, and the crisp scent of olive oil meeting warm bread. But let’s be clear: Italy serves up a universe of flavors far beyond these familiar delights. It’s more than just dishes; it’s an all-encompassing sensory adventure that beckons the curious and the hungry alike.

With Food Tours Italy , travelers gain access to this gastronomic wonderland, revealing authentic tastes from iconic cities such as Bologna , Florence , Rome , Milan , Naples , Venice , and Palermo . Each of these locations promises a unique culinary experience, challenging and satisfying even the most discerning palates. Guided by our expertise, you’ll unearth the true soul of Italian food. Every dish carries a story, an echo of its region’s history, passion, and age-old traditions. Your delightful dilemma? Pinpointing which of these cities will best satisfy your food desires. Let’s set forth and uncover what makes Italy’s culinary world genuinely exceptional.

Italy’s Culinary Stardom

Italy’s reputation in the culinary realm is nothing short of legendary. It’s a country where food is an art, an expression of love, and long-standing traditions. Over the centuries, Italy has effortlessly woven a rich tapestry of dishes and flavors that have found their way to tables around the world, solidifying its position as a giant in global gastronomy.

One might wonder, what is it about Italian food that has made it universally adored? It’s the meticulous craftsmanship, passed down through generations, ensuring every dish is a perfect balance of flavors. It’s about understanding the essence of each ingredient and allowing it to shine, whether it’s the freshness of a tomato in a simple Caprese salad or the creamy richness of a well-made tiramisu.

Furthermore, Italy’s geography plays a pivotal role. With its sprawling coastline, fertile plains, and rugged mountains, Italy has a diverse variety of microclimates, each fostering unique ingredients that contribute to the vast spectrum of regional dishes. From the hearty polentas and risottos of the North, influenced by the Alpine climate, to the olive oil-rich dishes of the sun-kissed South, there’s a myriad of tastes and textures to explore.

Another factor in Italy’s culinary success is its relentless pursuit of perfection. Italian chefs, both past and present, show a dedication to refining and preserving their traditional recipes. The result? Timeless dishes that, no matter where in the world they’re served, instantly transport the diner to an Italian nonna’s kitchen.

Bologna: The Hearty Flavors of the North

Bologna , often termed the “Food Capital” of Italy, stands proudly with a culinary legacy deeply rooted in its historical past. Located in the Emilia-Romagna region, the city’s gastronomic fame is fueled by its fertile land, yielding premium ingredients that chefs have been utilizing for centuries. This abundant yield, combined with its strategic location on ancient trade routes, introduced Bologna to a wealth of flavors and cooking techniques, shaping its cuisine into what it is today.

Two dishes that shine brightly in Bologna’s culinary constellation are tagliatelle al ragù and mortadella. Tagliatelle al ragù, commonly misnamed ‘spaghetti bolognese’ outside of Italy, is a testament to the city’s appreciation for simple yet flavorful combinations. Handmade pasta ribbons are bathed in a rich meat sauce that has simmered to perfection. Mortadella, on the other hand, is a finely ground pork sausage, peppered with cubes of white fat and sometimes specks of black pepper or pistachios.

Florence: Renaissance in Every Bite

Florence, famed for its profound contribution to the arts during the Renaissance, parallels its artistic legacy with an equally compelling gastronomic lineage. Just as the city fostered the genius of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, so too did it cultivate dishes that would leave an indelible mark on the world of food. From the rolling Tuscan hills surrounding Florence, comes a harvest of fine wines, olives, and truffles, all essential players in the Florentine kitchen.

At the forefront of Florentine cuisine is ribollita, a rustic, hearty soup that tells a story of Florentine frugality and ingenuity. This dish transforms stale bread and a medley of vegetables into a rich, flavorful experience, embodying the city’s knack for turning simplicity into brilliance. And then, there’s the iconic Florentine steak, a thick T-bone cut, seasoned minimally and grilled to perfection, showcasing the quality and flavor of Tuscan cattle. Together with a glass of Chianti wine, these dishes capture the essence of Florence: timeless, artful, and always satisfying.

Rome: Where History Meets Modern Delicacies

Rome, the Eternal City, has seen empires rise and fall, influencing not just the political and social landscape, but also deeply etching its mark on the gastronomic domain. With layers of history that span millennia, it’s no surprise that its cuisine reflects a blend of time-honored recipes with a touch of modern refinement. Every dish tells a story, every ingredient a relic of a time gone by, and every aroma a memory of ancient Roman streets.

One of the city’s signature dishes, cacio e pepe, is an embodiment of such tales. At its core, this dish is beautifully simple, made with pasta, Pecorino Romano cheese, and black pepper. Yet, its flavors are profound, resonating with tales of Roman shepherds who carried these non-perishable ingredients during long journeys. Another timeless offering is the saltimbocca, a savory delight featuring veal, prosciutto, and sage, sautéed in butter and wine . These dishes, and many others, seamlessly bridge the past and present, taking those fortunate enough to savor them on a flavorful rendezvous through Roman history.

Milan: Sophistication on a Plate

The world-renowned fashion metropolis, Milan exudes an aura of elegance that extends beyond its couture boutiques and design studios. In the cafes and chic restaurants, one discovers that Milan’s culinary scene mirrors its reputation: effortlessly stylish, yet profoundly rooted in tradition.

The iconic Risotto alla Milanese epitomizes this harmonious blend. Its luxurious saffron-infused creaminess is a delight for the senses, a nod to both innovation and age-old cooking techniques. On the other hand, osso buco, a hearty dish featuring tender braised veal shank, offers diners a comforting embrace of Milanese tradition.

Naples: The Birthplace of Pizza and More

Naples holds a special place in the hearts of food enthusiasts worldwide. Why? Because it’s the birthplace of pizza. Here, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, pizza found its simple yet profound roots: thin crust, rich tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and aromatic basil. It’s a harmonious combination that speaks to the Neapolitan soul, where respect for tradition and quality ingredients reign supreme.

Beyond pizza , the city gifts us with other culinary wonders, each holding its own story. Sfogliatella, for instance, with its crisp layers and sweet ricotta filling, whispers of centuries-old baking skills passed down through generations. Then there’s limoncello, the zesty lemon liqueur, which reflects the sun-drenched terrains and passionate craftsmanship of the region.

Venice: A Floating Dream of Seafood and Spices

With waterways as streets and gondoliers as guides, Venice offers a unique culinary experience shaped by its lagoon surroundings. The city’s relationship with the sea is evident not only in its iconic canals but also in its palate, dominated by fresh catches from the Adriatic. One can’t discuss Venetian cuisine without mentioning sarde in saor, a traditional dish that marries sardines with a sweet and sour onion sauce, reflecting the city’s rich maritime history and its love for layered flavors.

Spices, a relic of Venice’s status as a trading hub during the spice trade era, still leave their mark on many a dish, giving it an intriguing depth. Risi e bisi, a seemingly simple rice and pea dish, is elevated with a hint of black pepper and the finest olive oil, turning comfort food into a gourmet delight.

Palermo: Sicily’s Flavorful Heartbeat

Palermo, the capital of Sicily, possesses a culinary identity that seamlessly interweaves Mediterranean influences with whispers of North African flair. Its strategic location has historically made it a crossroads of cultures, a confluence that has beautifully translated into its gastronomic offerings. Arancini, a street food star, provides an exemplary introduction to the city’s tastes: rice balls with diverse fillings, from ragù to mozzarella, deep-fried to golden perfection.

Another striking feature of Palermo’s culinary scene is its affection for desserts, with cannoli leading the parade. These tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta, mirror the city’s joyous spirit. Meanwhile, the trace of North African inspirations can be sensed in dishes flavored with saffron, raisins, and pine nuts.

From the hearty embrace of Bologna’s robust dishes to the nuanced spices of Venice’s lagoon delicacies, Italy unfurls a gastronomic map that promises endless delight. Each city, with its unique culinary nuances, tells a story of traditions, innovations, and passions that have been lovingly passed down through generations. Milan exudes sophistication on every plate, while Palermo enchants with its fusion of Mediterranean and North African flavors. As you ponder which destination might best satisfy your food desires, consider the tastes, aromas, and textures you yearn to experience. The true essence of Italy lies not just in its iconic landmarks, but in the unforgettable meals that awaken the senses. So, why wait? Italy Food Tours are ready to take you on the perfect journey you need to immerse yourself in the magic that is Italian cuisine. Your plate, filled with centuries of love, creativity, and tradition, awaits.

About Tuscany

About Tuscany : The beauty and majesty of Tuscany cannot easily be captured in words, and pictures do not do it justice.  The region is best known for its rolling golden and green hills, cypress tree lined roads, post card perfect sunsets, and vineyards as far as the eye can see.  Located in central Italy, Tuscany is dotted with quaint and medieval walled villages such as Siena, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, and Cortona.  Each has a unique look and feel and is known for its local delicacies: Siena for its pappardelle con lepre (a ribbon-shaped pasta, with a hare ragu), Montalcino for its famous Brunello wine, Pienza for its Pecorino cheese, Montepulciano for its pork and “pici” pasta, and Cortona for its ragu di cinghiale (wild boar).  A Tuscan specialty for meat lovers is the local beef from Val di Chiana, a Chianina steak otherwise known as bistecca alla Fiorentina.

Tuscany is also renowned for its varied wines from highly prized Sangiovese based wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti Classico to the full bodied Super Tuscans. There are also many tasty white wines to try, such as the most well-known Vernaccia from San Gimignano and Vermentino.  Trebbiano and Malvasia are blended to make the dessert wine Vin Santo, that is traditionally served after the meal with cantucci almond cookies.

Your GastroNomad tour guides have spent considerable time exploring Tuscany and learning all that the region has to offer.  We will take you to exclusive wineries that are not open to the general public, to authentic local restaurants that tourists often miss, and to boutique hotels and resorts that are hidden gems.  We have stayed at many of the hotels and eaten at most of the restaurants on our Tuscany excursions to ensure that they meet the exacting standards expected of an exclusive luxury tour.

The 7 Best Food Tours in Rome Italy

W hen you think about the food you might eat on a visit to Italy, most people think about gelato and pizza . I wasn’t any different.

What I learned from a food tour in Rome is that Italy has so much more than just pasta, pizza, and strong espresso. There is so much history behind the food, with long-standing traditions that go back for centuries.

Food isn’t just a necessity in Italy, it’s a way of life, and feeds into the culture in such a big way.

If you’re looking to take one of the top Rome food tours , then this guide is for you. Each food tour offers something different and unique, so keep reading to find one that’s right for you.

What to Expect from Rome Food Tours

Before visiting Italy, I essentially planned a two-week trip around the country to search for the best pizza north of Rome . (I did end up finding it — in Rome — but I’m still open to another round of explorations!)

On my own sort of food tour around Italy, I decided I’d go to the experts to find out a bit more about the nation’s culinary history.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and gorge yourself!

You can expect food tours to take you to not only the best places to find local, freshly-made food to sample dishes and snacks, but you can also expect to be taken to some historic sites and neighborhoods.

As you walk from place to place, you will learn about Rome’s history, both food related and not, and hear from passionate local guides about the local way of life, traditions and culture.

It’s not all about delicious food – although that is the focus.

The Best Rome Food Tours

Below you will find a list of food tours in Rome and what you can expect from each.

1. Rome Street Food Tour

This Rome Street Food Tour is a great experience for first time visitors to Rome who are looking to discover the city’s culinary secrets while exploring its vibrant streets.

The tour is led by a friendly local guide, who will take you on a journey through the city’s neighborhoods, where you’ll visit traditional food markets and sample some of the best street food in Rome.

You’ll learn about the history behind each dish and the cultural influences that have shaped Roman cuisine over the years.

The tour includes stops at family-owned restaurants, bakeries, and gelaterias, where you’ll taste a variety of authentic Italian treats, such as pizza bianca, suppli, and artisanal gelato.

This engaging and delicious tour is a must-do for anyone looking to experience the true essence of Rome. You can read all about our experience on the Street food and history walking tour of Rome . Of course it made the list of the best things to do with teens in Rome .

Check prices and availability for the Rome Street Food Tour here. There are plenty of food tastings, includes a beer and wine stop, and a small group experience..

2. Taste of Testaccio Food Tour

I arranged for a walking food tour in Rome’s Testaccio neighborhood . It’s not the most touristy area of Rome but, as I soon learned, there were plenty of reasons why it’s the best area for culinary freaks like myself.

The tour started in the morning so we’d first have time to explore the local farmer’s market. In the market, we met with some of the locals who’ve had stands there for years and years.

My favorite was Carmelo, the “Tomato Poet” who sells his tomatoes each for the same price—no matter the type. We sampled several different varieties just as Carmelo would offer for other visitors.

After the tour of the food market, we had the chance to try a local Roman-style breakfast pastry—the cornetto.

It’s something most of us on the tour had never heard of before. And it was amazing! There was also tiramisu in a chocolate cup. Can’t go wrong with that.

My favourite part of the walking tour was when we stopped at the gourmet foodie shop  E. Volpetti . The shop serves gourmet cheeses (over 140) and meats, but what I most enjoyed was the balsamic tasting.

I enjoyed it so much I even brought home a balsamic vinegar .

After all those treats we spent some time getting a better history of the Testaccio area of Rome.

Rather than just stuffing our faces all afternoon, we visited one of Rome’s most famous cemeteries—it’s for non-Catholics only and is where the famous poet John Keats is buried.

Our tour guide explained some of the history of the area, which inevitably included details about the neighbourhood’s football (soccer) obsession, the mafia history and any number of your typical Italian stereotypes.

After exploring the more historical sites, it was back to the food tour.

Lunch included typical Roman pasta dishes and — of course— fine wine. By this time I was more than adequately full. But when the final stop of the tour was announced—Rome’s most popular gelato cafe—my appetite grew yet again!

In the gelateria, our tour guide explained the most important tips for knowing the difference between real and fake gelato, as unfortunately some gelato stores are tourist traps:

  • Pay attention to the color. Banana gelato should be off-white not yellow (you don’t eat the banana peel!)
  • Pay attention to the shape. Real gelato shouldn’t have large, billowy mounds flowing out of the metal tubs. More rich and tasty gelatos while be full of less air!
  • Keep an eye out for the ingredients. If you see big brown boxes behind the counter, or empty tubs, then you’re probably not eating the real thing. Italian food shops will often prominently display their ingredients so just have a quick look around before you buy!

By the end of the tour I pretty much felt like a food expert, but thankfully the good food in Rome didn’t stop there.

My guide offered up all her favorite Rome restaurants so that the rest of my stay would be as tasty as the tour!

  • We recommend this Tastes & Traditions of Rome: Testaccio Food and Market Tour with Devour Tours (one of our favorite companies) It includes 8+ food tastings and a small group of maximum 12 people. We did three of their food tours in Italy and loved everyone. Including the next tour…

Do you have any great food recommendations for Rome? Let us know in the comments!

When you think about the food you might eat on a visit to Italy, most people think about gelato and pizza. I wasn’t any different. What I learned from a food tour in Rome is that […]

I've lived in Italy for a decade. Here are the hidden-gem locations you've been missing

  • As a child, I traveled around Italy on family vacations and now live in the northern Veneto region.
  • Over the years, I've made a conscious effort to explore the less-crowded areas of the country.
  • Some of my favorite hidden gems include places like Lake Iseo, Urbino, and Alba.

Insider Today

In recent years, over-tourism has forced Venice to introduce a daytripper fee to combat congestion on some of the city's busiest days, and Sardinia has introduced a reservation system for some of its most popular beaches.

That said, there's never been a better time to scratch off the obvious destinations from your Italy itinerary and take a chance on a place that isn't in the guidebooks.

I've been traveling the country since childhood, initially with my parents on family vacations , and then as a resident of the northern Veneto region as a journalist.

Over the past few years, I've made a conscious effort to go where the crowds don't. Here are my recommendations if you're looking to experience Italy's culture, nature, and food without the hassle of large crowds.

The Basilicata region is filled with unique treasures.

gastronomy tour italy

Occupying the arch of Italy's boot, Basilicata has never been a region of prosperity or fame. However, one place you may have seen on standard tourist itineraries is Matera.

Matera is filled with caves where inhabitants lived in poverty until the 1950s . Now, however, visitors can duck into rock-hewn churches and sleep in five-star cave hotels. You may have even spotted the city in the James Bond movie "No Time to Die."

The rest of the Basilicata region shouldn't be overlooked either. It's peppered with treasures from the village of Castelmezzano — which clings to jagged rock face — to the Maratea coastline with black beaches and summery villages.

Although it's known as the region that "doesn't exist," Molise has a lot to offer.

gastronomy tour italy

Ironically, Molise is best known as the region that " doesn't exist " — an phrase stemming from the fact that even Italians struggle to pinpoint it on a map or name more than one of its cities.

The region lies on Italy's eastern coastline just north of Puglia. Its capital, Campobasso, is crowned by the mountaintop Monforte Castle.

My favorite city in the region, however, is coastal Termoli, with pastel-painted houses inside ancient walls, a honey-hued cathedral, and a Belvedere Tower with pretty views of the harbor.

Don't miss out on the restaurants serving the famed brodetto alla termolese, a rich tomato and pepper-based seafood soup that originated in Termoli .

Skip crowded Lake Como and check out Lake Iseo instead.

gastronomy tour italy

With flashy Lake Como to one side and sun-drenched Lake Garda to the other, it's not surprising that Lake Iseo gets overlooked. However, the over 15-mile-long body of water has its fair share of elegant, flower-adorned villages and waterside promenades.

I recommend taking a ferry to car-free Monte Isola, which is known as the biggest lake island in Europe .

Once there, visitors can rent bikes and peddle around the nature-rich perimeter of the island, or hike up the path to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola on the island's mountain summit.

Urbino was a center for art and learning in the Renaissance Era.

gastronomy tour italy

Urbino is a walled city in the central Marche region of Italy. The city was a hotbed of learning and art during the Renaissance Era under the rule of Federico da Montefeltro.

A highlight of Urbino is the monumental 15th-century building called Palazzo Ducale, which is now known as the National Gallery of the Marche.

Travelers can visit the complex and wander the cavernous rooms displaying paintings by artists like Raphael, who was born in the city.

Alba is known for great food, wine, and shopping.

gastronomy tour italy

Alba is the elegant, upscale capital of Piedmont's Le Langhe , a hilly zone draped with vineyards and wineries.

Before slipping into a post-lunch food coma at one of the many restaurants, wander the pristine city, and window shop at its high-end stores.

Then, head to stylish bars that offer a range of stellar local wines, including potent reds like Barolo and Barbaresco.

Alba is also known for producing the white truffle , which is hunted by experts and their sharp-nosed dogs. Each year, Alba's International White Truffle Fair showcases and celebrates the prized tuber.

The scheme opened for applications for non-EU citizens at the end of last week - having been talked about for years.

Anyone wanting to take advantage needs to meet a few criteria, according to Italian law Studio Legale Metta - including:

  • A university or college degree (minimum three years) from an accredited institution, an accredited professional licence, or accredited superior professional experience.
  • At least six months in the industry in which they intend to work remotely.
  • A work contract and a salary of at least €28,000 (£24,000).
  • No specific immigration crimes within the past five years.
  • Evidence of a place to stay in Italy.
  • Health insurance. A private medical insurance usually costs between €350-700 a year.

The firm advises applying four to five months in advance.

Italy is trying to encourage growth amid an aging population.

A charity boss providing free haircuts for the homeless says it is helping people on the streets feel less "invisible".

Haircuts4Homeless, founded by Stewart Roberts, has 80 centres across the UK and has delivered 60,000 haircuts over the past decade.

Mr Roberts told Sky News' Breakfast with Kay Burley that some people have had "no communication with anyone" before getting their hair cut.

"Sometimes it's a quiet one, sometimes they just open up and... they tell you their stories," he said.

He said the situations charity staff hear of can be "really sad", but they also manage to have "amazing laughs" during the sessions.

Mr Roberts said he celebrated 18 years of sobriety yesterday and has struggled with drug problems in the past.

"I really relate to people and the struggles that they have," he said, though he noted it was a "misconception" that everyone on the streets was an alcoholic or a drug addict.

"But often it's the case that they will turn to that and you can't really blame them when they're in such bad positions," he said.

Asked how people can help, Mr Roberts said the charity is always looking for volunteers and sponsors as it "doesn't run itself".

"The main thing is, we're trying to humanise the face of homelessness. It's making sure that you spread our message out," he added.

The popular comedian has lamented increasing prices for performers wanting to take part in Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Manford said prices, especially for accommodation, were an "absolute joke" and were fuelled by "pure greed".

"I've just priced up a week up there and even if every show sells out, I'm still operating at a loss," he wrote on social media site X.

The comedian said this was less of a problem for him "as it's part of a much bigger tour" and because of the "stage of my career" but he feared it would shut out new performers.

"No idea how anyone starting out is managing to get up there and showcase their talents!" he said.

Manford said if prices stay high then "the only people who can do it are people with money or backing".

A quick search on Booking.com puts the price of the hotel for the duration of the festival at about £4,000 upwards (looking at places with three stars or above) - although many are charging much more.

One of five Bulgarian nationals who falsely claimed £50m in Universal Credit filmed themselves throwing a stack of £20 notes in the air.

The criminal threw the notes one by one and waited for an unknown woman to pick them up.

Stacks of cash tied with rubber bands were also shown in a separate video.

The benefit fraud gang made thousands of false claims for Universal Credit using either real people or hijacked identities and backed them up with an array of forged documents, including counterfeit payslips and fake GP letters in the largest prosecution of its type in English legal history.

Oil prices are sticking around $90 a barrel, slightly below the $91 cost of Monday but still higher than the six months since October. The latest high comes as a Ukrainian drone strike targeted Russia's third-largest refinery.

After nearly four months of falls, grocery business Ocado is the best performer of the morning.

Its share price is up 4.83%, the biggest increase among the 100 most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange that make up the FTSE (Financial Times Stock Exchange) 100 index.

War in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East had been great news for arms makers. But there's a sense that the valuation of those companies may not be able to continue to rise as aerospace and defence company Rolls-Royce was the biggest loser of the FTSE 100 on Wednesday morning. Its share price fell 1.09%.

One pound buys €1.1675 and $1.2683.

Gym memberships can be steep.

Industry giant PureGym told Sky News the average cost of its London gyms was around £32.32 per month. Outside of London it's around £23.30.

If you're training in the capital, five years of membership will set you back nearly £2,000.

So, in the long run, could you do it for less at home?

We enlisted Lee Mitchell, head personal trainer at Jogger.co.uk, to see if he could create a home gym for under £1,939.20 - the price of five years' membership at a London PureGym.

We set him some criteria: we'd need a good range of equipment, including benches, dumbbells, cable machines and cardio machines - and at least some of it had to be brand new.

"A home gym setup can represent serious value over time, considering everything from commuting costs to the convenience of having your workout space readily available in the comfort of your own home," said Lee.

But could he deliver on the challenge set?

What he bought

At the top of Lee's shopping list was a multi-purpose power rack that could double as a squat rack and smith machine.

"This equipment, although a larger investment, covers fundamental exercises for individuals at all fitness levels, making it integral to any home gym," he said.

After a quick search, he found exactly what he was looking for in good condition on Facebook Marketplace.

This cost him £250 - a good start, as this usually retails for around £2,000.

Next, Lee found a cable machine (£359.10 with new customer discount at Gym Master), a Spin bike (£219 at Fitness Superstore), a weight bench (£41.99 at Amazon) and a vertical leg press (£429 at Fitness Superstore) all brand new and well within budget.

"Certain items genuinely benefit from being sourced brand new, such as the cable machine (to prevent fraying cables for safety) and the vertical leg press (to ensure it's in proper working order, especially given the potential risks of a faulty machine)," Lee said.

So far, we've got five items for £1,200.09.

Lee picked up half of his total equipment brand new, but it was back to Facebook Marketplace for the rest.

Having adjustable dumbbells maximises space (crucial for a home gym), and Lee was able to find a great set of two for just £200. They allow you to move from as little as 5kg all the way to 40kg.

The current owner claimed to have spent around £300 when they bought them and insisted their condition was "like new".

Next came an Olympic barbell and 100kg worth of weighted plates to go with it.

Lee found exactly what he was looking for at a cost of £240.

We're just a lifting platform away from completion now - which swiftly came in at £200.

"In total, I spent just over an hour finalising my list of equipment, sourcing from various places including Facebook Marketplace, Amazon, Fitness Superstore and Gym Master," Lee said.

He opted for a 50/50 split between brand-new items and second-hand products, "partially to prove that this is not all about bargain hunting pre-loved items".

What about space?

The obvious argument here is that it would take a significant amount of space to put all this (in some cases) shiny equipment.

But Lee made his choices with that in mind.

"I factored in that the average UK garage is typically 3x6m, a common size for gym conversions.

"All the equipment I chose fit perfectly into a 3x3m space, allowing for ample "spreading out" room within a larger space," he added.

Impressively, Lee managed to source eight key pieces of equipment for £1939.09 - which leaves us 11p to spare.

Every Wednesday we get Michelin chefs, top bloggers or critics to pick their favourite cheap eats around where they live and at home.

This week, we're delighted to have Great British Menu queen Lisa Goodwin-Allen, executive chef of the Michelin-starred Northcote restaurant in Lancashire.

Hi Lisa, can you tell us your favourite places in Lancashire where you can get a meal for two for less than £40?

I love Jungle on the high street in Clitheroe. I go there a lot for brunch with my husband and my son. It's great value for money and just has a really cool, relaxed atmosphere, and they serve really tasty food.

They have things like sweetcorn fritters with chilli jam and shakshuka with a falafel scotch egg on the menu.

The dishes always have a twist to them. It also feels great to be able to give back to the brilliant independents on the local high street.

What's your go-to cheap eat for a night at home?

A cheese toastie with tomato relish...

Tomato relish ingredients:

  • 25g onion, finely sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, grated
  • 250g good quality, soft, ripe plum tomatoes, chopped
  • 20g olive oil
  • 10g tomato puree
  • 50g tomato juice
  • 1/4 tsp red chilli, finely diced
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • Good pinch of salt and sugar
  • In a medium sized pan, heat the olive oil and add the finely sliced onion
  • Season with salt and cover the pan with cling film or a lid
  • Cook the onion down until it is completely soft but with no colour
  • Once soft, remove the lid and continue to cook on a medium heat until the onion is nicely caramelised
  • Add chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, tomato juice, garlic and chili.

Ingredients for the cheese toastie:

  • 125g semi-skimmed milk
  • 15g egg yolk
  • 12g cornflour
  • 50g cheddar (grated)
  • 5g Tunworth cheese (cut into to chunks)
  • 4 slices of toastie bread
  • 50g cheddar to garnish
  • In a small bowl whisk together the egg yolk and cornflour
  • Pour the milk into a medium pan, bring to the boil, and once boiling pour on to the egg mix, mix well then pour back into the pan
  • Cook on a medium heat, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens
  • Once thickened whisk in the grated cheese and Tunworth
  • Spoon the mix in semi spear molds (3cm) and freeze. If you don't have spear moulds, you can use an ice cube tray and fill half way up
  • Take one slice of bread and brush with melted butter on one side, place the buttered side of bread on to the toastie maker, place two domes of frozen cheese on to the bread in each triangle then place a slice of bread on top, brush with more melted butter, close the lid
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove then put a good spoon of tomato compote on top, cover with more grated black cow cheddar and finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a touch of salt.

The restaurant run by MasterChef judge Monica Galetti and her husband David is closing its doors after seven years of business.

Mere in Fitzrovia, London, will hold its last service on 16 April, according to a statement on its website.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closure of Mere restaurant- but we feel this is the right time after seven years," it read.

"We want to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank Alastair Storey (owner of catering company WSH, which backed the restaurant) and everyone who has supported us and our loyal patrons and dedicated staff throughout this journey.

"To our customers we thank you for your loyal and joyous visits. We hope to raise one last glass together before we close."

While it did not hold a Michelin star, the eatery had been recommended in this year's Michelin Guide for its South Pacific Island inspired dishes.

The owners haven't given a reason for the closure, but it comes as the hospitality sector continues to struggle with rising running costs.

A survey by UKHospitality, the British Beer and Pub Association, British Institute of Innkeeping and Hospitality Ulster recently found that a quarter of operators had no cash reserves left after years of economic challenges.

When Elon Musk set up Tesla’s factory in China, he made a bet that brought him cheap parts and capable workers — a bet that made him ultrarich and saved his company.

Mara Hvistendahl, an investigative reporter for The Times, explains why, now, that lifeline may have given China the tools to beat Tesla at its own game.
