Maze of Modern Life

Head to Madinat Jumeirah, one of Dubai's most attractive developments. With your Dubai cruise, stroll along the desert-colored villas and hotels, alongside waterways with palms, banana trees and bougainvillea. Sit down in one of the trendy local cafes for a refreshing fruit juice. At the heart of this modern village lies Souq Madinat Jumeirah, a maze-like bazaar with shops lining wood-framed walkways.

Local Cuisine

You'll be able to find food from anywhere around the globe here — but focus on the local fare for the most authentic experience with Dubai cruises. While you're out on the town, pick up a shawarma , shaved strips of spicy spit-roasted meat served in pita bread. Try manousheh , a flatbread topped with local Akkawi cheese and za'atar herbs. Slate your sweet tooth with luqaimat , fried dough balls spiced with saffron and cardamom.

Carpets found in the markets of Dubai

Pick one of the large number of malls in this shopping Mecca. There's Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping center, as well as the Mall of Emirates. For a more traditional experience, browse the colorful souqs in Bur Dubai and Deira for Persian carpets, Arabic coffee pots and other trinkets.

Review of Grand Circle Cruise Line

One of the industry's  small cruise companies , GCCL-Grand Circle Cruise Line (gct.com) was established in 1958 as a travel company serving the American Association of Retired People (AARP). Since then, Grand Circle has expanded as an independent cruise company offering meaningful experiences for the "over-50's". Today GCCL offers a full range of cruise tours and land tour programs. The company's main business is discounted, extended-stay travel vacation programs in Europe, most occurring during winter in the south of Spain. Grand Circle also provides escorted tours all around the world, with a strong emphasis on enrichment.

Grand Circle Cruise Line logo

In 1985 the company was acquired by Alan and Harriet Lewis. They took operations to higher levels by building on the company's original base and expanding the destinations and offerings available. A continuing feature has been the right decision to avoid public advertising, focusing on referrals, past guests and direct requests for information. The Program Directors of the company started out as resident hosts, lecturers, and guides and developed over the years into hallmark service for the Grand Circle company. With each new program and destination, regional offices were opened across the globe, providing support and monitoring operations in an area. The new options often came at request or suggestion of past passengers, who form sort of an "alumni" association.

Starting in 1997, the company began promoting European river sailings on partially or fully chartered ships to its clientele. Due to the enthusiastic response, Grand Circle tried to ensure both excellent qualities of the product and control of the operations by deciding to have its own ships built - River Symphony was the first one in 1998, followed by a series of constantly improved ships over the years in various regions of the Mediterranean, Europe, Russia, and Egypt. Grand Circle also runs chartered operations in Antarctica, Europe, Panama, China, and Burma, under both the Overseas Adventure and Grand Circle brands.

Along with the current operations, mention should be made of company's sense of commitment to responsible tourism in the regions where it operates. During the last 20 years, the Grand Circle Foundation has committed more than US$92 million to advance education and preserving cultural traditions. In Egypt's Valley of the Kings, Grand Circle has funded the construction of shade/information pavilions to make the travel experience more worthwhile. The Foundation also supports around 100 schools in 30 different countries.

Grand Circle Cruise Experience

Grand Circle Cruise Line offers a full range of small-ship cruises for the over-50 set.

As with all Grand Circle Cruise Line's programs, company's passengers are over 50, in some cases even much more so. The line doesn't market to families and doesn't accept kids as passengers. Its guests are generally well traveled, with large percentage repeat passengers and members of their Inner Circle loyalty program, an organization for those who have made 3 or more trips with the line. The majority of passengers are married couples, though clusters of friends sailing together and singles are not unusual. Given Grand Circle's focus on learning experiences, most of the company's guests are open-minded and curious, eager to try new things.

Since Grand Circle is an American cruise line and generally does whole-ship trips, the language of the day at all times is the English. The crews, and most especially the company's Program Directors, are at the very least conversationally fluent. Most of Grand Circle passengers are Americans or American-connected.

While the ships of the line are designed for the regions in which they operate, they are as much about comfort as a destination. All cabins are well-appointed and quite spacious. On the ships operating in Western Europe, the upper-deck staterooms have true balconies, while the lower decks feature large windows. Generally, Grand Circle's Europe-based ships have twin beds only. Shipboard bathrooms are excellently fitted out, and rooms are kept spotless. CNN, movies, alternative music, and language channels are available, along with line's onboard info channel.

Dining is also professionally handled. Depending on the ship, there is a mix of a buffet (breakfast and lunch) and served (dinner). Though menu options vary, regional and local specialties are always included. Specialty evenings are also offered - for example, an Egyptian buffet - depending on the itinerary.

General entertainment is casual and low-key. Nobody goes on a cruise by Grand Circle for bingo or karaoke, though both may be offered. Sometimes there may be a costume night, black-and-white dress evening, or passenger talent show.

The real focus of any voyage by Grand Circle Cruise Line is the chance to experience other histories, traditions, cultures, and people. Through excursions ashore and onboard lectures, meals and talks with local people, demonstrations by or visits with local artisans, passengers truly have the chance to expand their understanding and knowledge of other places.

Itinerary of Grand Circle Cruise Line

Currently, Grand Circle Cruise Line's fleet includes the following vessels:

  • MV Clio (Tere Moana)
  • MV Athena (currently CMV Astoria - CMV charter)
  • MV Artania (Phoenix Reisen charter)
  • MS Provence barge
  • MS River Anuket

Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our River Cruises hub. All river passenger shipping line companies and their fleets are listed there.

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government for allowing ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

ARABIAN GULF CRUISES

Sailing through the Arabian Gulf unfolds a mystique world, where history and modernity peacefully coexist. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are bustling microcosms, peacefully shared by cultures from all corners of the world. If shopping is your thing, there is no better place to visit than Dubai.

Muscat boasts beautifully manicured parks, long, unspoiled stretches of beach, and an ancient stone moat that surrounds the area. For the explorer, the rich culture and beauty of India will make your cruise holiday an unforgettable one. Our Arabian Gulf cruise is the perfect holiday getaway for you.

Itineraries

Itineraries that sail in the Arabian Gulf mainly depart from Abu Dhabi & Dubai and call into ports around the Arabian Sea and Red Sea. Some itineraries depart from the south eastern Mediterranean offering a longer and more diverse cruise option. These are mainly repositioning cruises when cruise ships are relocated to the Middle East for the winter season and include several days at sea. The most popular Arabian Gulf cruise destinations are the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, India and Jordan. Cruises in the Arabian Gulf mainly offer 7-night itineraries with overnights in Dubai, Muscat and Abu Dhabi. The India cruise itineraries range from 12 – 14 Nights.

The Arabian Gulf is famous for sunshine all year round. The main cruising season is in winter, from December through March when the weather is mild. Repositioning cruises usually take place in October and November and again in March and April when the season ends.

Cruise Lines

Popular cruise lines sailing this winter in the Arabian Gulf are MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises .

Ports in the Arabian Gulf

Sharm-el-sheikh, egypt, abu dhabi, united arab emirates.

The sleek and modern capital of U.A.E. presents a fascinating mixture of tradition and progression. Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the main attraction of Abu Dhabi, is an architectural beauty. It is the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers. Don’t miss the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – the world’s first Ferrari theme park and the largest attraction of its kind. The park tells the Ferrari story with passion and excitement through more than 20 exhilarating and educational rides and attractions, interactive shopping and authentic Italian dining experiences. The other attractions include the Al-Hosn Palace used by the Cultural Foundation, the beautiful Capital Garden of the Corniche, and the Women’s Craft Centre where you will be able to shop for some very detailed souvenirs.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai is a cosmopolitan oasis, admired for its untiring vigor, gusty ambition and the ability to dream up and realise projects. This is a city of superlatives that has birthed the tallest building (Burj Khalifa), only 7-star hotel (the Burj al-Arab), largest artificial islands (the Palm Islands), the world’s largest dancing fountain; a huge indoor Ski paradise and many more unbelievable places. With the city gearing up to showcase many more grand projects for World Expo 2020, visiting Dubai now may feel like a trip to the future. Explore the souk bazaars for gold and silks, Persian and Afghani rugs and more. And be sure to visit the Jumeirah Mosque to get a glimpse of the cultural side of Dubai.

Muscat, Oman

The capital of Oman has undergone rapid urbanization in recent times. But a glimpse of Muscat’s past shows the old houses lining the Mutrah corniche above the harbor, and in the traditional market souks. The Sultan’s Palace and the National Museum are the main attractions in the city. Muscat offers a chance to indulge in Amonage or Ubar perfumes produced here, which are the world’s most expensive.

DAMMAM, Saudi

Dammam is known for its airy waterfronts and sandy beaches and has a growing reputation as an arts, sports and entertainment destination. Due to the heaby influence of frequent travelers, this city’s cuisine has an international flavour to it, and its urban landscape is marked by a striking contrast of modern and historic architecture. Dammam is also the coastal gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Al Ahsa, home to one of the world’s largest natural oases and an intricate cave system.

Jeddah, Saudi

Visitors can travel back in time walking through the streets of Al Balad, Jeddah’s UNESCO World Heritage recognized Hijazi style old town, or stroll down the waterfront corniche and take time to admire the world’s tallest fountain. Jeddah, the commercial center of Saudi Arabia is a vibrant hub combining heritage and modernity. Jeddah is also the principal gateway to Makkah, the holiest city in Islam, located just 65 km to the east

Doha, Qatar

Doha is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the east of the country. It has an impressive collection of architecture for such a small desert peninsula, home to marvels of symmetry like the IM Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art, and the National Museum of Qatar, which was designed by Jean Nouvel and is as awe-inspiring inside as out. Doha is a traditional and determinedly modern, a vibrant hub of art, culture and untouched desert landscapes.

There are many more Arabian Gulf Cruise ports waiting to amuse you. Check out our Gulf cruises from Dubai and Abu Dhabi for more information on these bustling destinations.

Dubai: The maritime and tourism authorities of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Oman have formalised the Cruise Arabia alliance. This regional partnership will promote the Arabian Gulf as a global cruise ship destination.

Dubai Department for Economy and Tourism (DET) announced on Friday that an official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the stakeholders at the Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin (ITB Berlin) travel trade convention.

According to DET, the key objectives of the Cruise Arabia alliance include collaboration to enhance the cruise experience for passengers, attract more cruise liners to the region, improve port infrastructure, and drive economic growth in the regional cruise tourism sector.

The maritime and tourism authorities of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Oman have formalised the Cruise Arabia alliance – a strategic regional partnership that will promote the Arabian Gulf as a cruise ship destination globally

Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), said, “The growth of our cruise tourism has been largely shaped by the continuous support of our stakeholders and partners. This alliance will result in more cruise operators seeking to anchor in Dubai, capitalising on its strategic location and promoting the city’s diverse offerings, world-class infrastructure and superior air and sea connectivity.”

Dubai is home to two world-class cruise ports, Mina Rashid (Port Rashid) and Dubai Harbour, which simultaneously accommodate nine mega-cruise vessels. Dubai’s 2023-2024 winter cruise season was launched on October 28, 2023, with the arrival of the luxury liner Mein Schiff 2, which docked at the Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal at Mina Rashid.

Meanwhile, Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal welcomed 300,000 passengers in the 2022-2023 cruise season, roughly four times the number from its debut season, with a 40 per cent increase in ship calls.

Despite the significant disruption to Middle East cruise itineraries as a result of the ongoing Red Sea security crisis , MSC Cruises has indicated it remains committed to growing its presence in the regional cruise sector.

The Italian cruise line, the market leader in the GCC cruise sector by capacity, renewed its fly-cruise partnership with Emirates for another two years during the Arabian Travel Market exhibition and conference in Dubai.

The agreement cements Dubai’s position as the leading homeport hub for cruise lines in the Arabian Gulf, and provides MSC Cruises with the ability to offer fly-cruise packages to holiday makers with return flights to Dubai from 21 airports across Europe and South America.

In a release, Emirates said the partnership builds on an existing 10-year relationship and will leverage the strengths of the airline and MSC Cruises to enhance the guest experience and support the growth of Dubai’s cruise tourism eco-system.  “We are delighted to further extend our partnership with Emirates for MSC Euribia Fly&Cruise packages from Dubai this winter season,” said Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises.

“Both Emirates and MSC Cruises are recognised as leaders in their fields, so it’s a perfect match to offer Emirates’ high-quality flight service with the outstanding experience waiting for guests on board our ship,” he added.

MSC Cruises is homeporting its newest Meraviglia-Plus class ship MSC Euribia in Dubai for the coming 2024/25 cruise season, sailing a series of 7-night roundtrip voyages in the Arabian Gulf .

The ship will call at destinations including Doha , Bahrain , Abu Dhabi and some of the itineraries include Sir Bani Yas – the largest natural island in the United Arab Emirates which offers pristine beaches and diverse wildlife.

Benefits of the Fly&Cruise packages include being met at arrivals with a dedicated bus transfer to the ship. On return, guests can drop their bags in the cruise terminal, and collect them directly once they arrive at their destination. The MSC Fly&Cruise packages including Emirates flights are available from Italy (Milan, Rome), Germany (Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Dusseldorf), United Kingdom (London Heathrow, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle) and Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Lisbon, Paris, Stockholm, Vienna, Zurich and São Paulo.

Dedicated Emirates check-in counters at Port Rashid allow passengers who are disembarking from their cruise to check in their luggage and get their flight boarding passes up to four hours before flight departure, breezing through all their airport formalities directly to their departure gate.

American cruise guests will also soon be able to book their Emirates flight through MSC Cruises from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando and Washington.

China introduces visa-free entry for tourists entering nation via cruise ships

Under the new policy, tour groups who travel to China through cruise ships will be able to enter and, therefore, stay in the country for some 15 days without a visa, as per the National Immigration Administration.

In order to boost its slow-moving travel and tourism sector, China has allowed visa-free entry for foreign tour groups that travel to the East Asian nation via cruise ships. The policy that came into effect on May 15 is an attempt by the Chinese government to boost international visitors to the nation.

Tour groups will be allowed to enter through 13 ports in China. Some of these are Shanghai, Qingdao, Dalian and Haikou, told a senior official with the immigration administration at a press conference in Beijing. Tour groups that meet the requirements will be accepted and managed by local travel firms, and they will be permitted to visit Beijing, the country's capital, as well as coastal areas, according to Mao.

“The visa-free entry policy for foreign tour groups on cruise ships will provide policy support for the development of the cruise industry,” Mao said. “It will also help attract more foreign tourists to China and provide more convenient channels for people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries.”

The current drive follows a series of legislative initiatives that China has implemented since late last year in an effort to draw in more foreign tourists. These include the ability to enter some European and Asian nations—including Singapore—without a visa. In January, the nation's first cruise ship built in-house made its debut, providing local visitors with additional choices for international travel in a setting that is still familiar to them.

In March, China also adopted a visa-free policy for Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg that will be valid from March 14, 2024, to November 30, 2024. Ordinary passport holders from these nations are allowed to enter China visa-free for purposes of business, tourism, family visits or transit and will be allowed to be in the country for 15 days. However, those who do not meet the visa-free policy requirements from these countries still need to obtain visas before entering China.

However, it can be difficult for China to attract overseas visitors amid a weakening economy and lowered demand for travel in Asia’s biggest economy.

An Australian airline called Qantas Airways Ltd. very recently suspended flight operations between Sydney and Shanghai, and instead added more services to Singapore and Bengaluru in India. Low demand for travel between Australia and China was referred to as the main reason for the halt by the airline.

PwC Middle East’s Qatar Economy Watch unveils key drivers and enablers for diversification and decarbonisation

  • Press Release
  • 3 minute read
  • May 08, 2024

In 2023, Qatar achieved a third consecutive fiscal surplus of QR43.1Bn, over 5% of its GDP, the highest in the GCC

Forecasts for this year predict another surplus, based on a conservative oil price assumption of US$60 per barrel, despite Brent crude’s actual Q1 average of US$83

Substantial economic impact is demonstrated through the potential within the country’s clean energy, logistics, tourism and sports, and artificial intelligence, all of which are underpinned by five critical cross-sectoral enablers

Doha, Qatar; 8 May 2024: PwC Middle East's latest Qatar Economy Watch , released today, reveals a sustained confidence in Qatar’s economic growth, attributed to the nation's diversification strategy and investments aimed at transforming the nation into a knowledge-based economy. The report indicates that this has led to fiscal resilience and innovation amidst global challenges.

As Qatar advances with its third National Development Strategy (NDS-3), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts a favourable growth outlook for the country in 2024.

PwC Middle East in Qatar has identified four important sectors driving Qatar’s transformation journey: clean energy, logistics, tourism and sports, and artificial intelligence, each of which offers the country a significant competitive edge on a regional and global scale as outlined below:

Clean energy: Ramping up investments in clean energy sources such as renewables is recommended, while also exploring opportunities in new carbon capture technologies, green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel.

Logistics: Direct investments in prominent global ports like Rotterdam showcase Qatar's cementing its position in the global logistics landscape. Further investments in advanced technologies are also seen as favourable in order to automate logistics and cargo handling at various touchpoints.

Tourism and sports: Customised marketing campaigns and a global network of tourism offices can further promote Qatar’s attractiveness as a tourist destination. Another area of opportunity is cruise tourism, with Qatar witnessing a 151% rise in cruise visitors during the 2022-2023 season.

Artificial intelligence: Qatar stands out for its strategic emphasis on AI as a key priority sector. To further enhance its digital capabilities, a dedicated AI economic cluster and identification of specific AI use cases can serve as an incentive to promote the adoption of AI across all sectors.

Bassam Hajhamad, Qatar Country Senior Partner and Consulting Lead at PwC Middle East, commented on the report findings: “Qatar has consistently displayed resilience amidst global inflation and macroeconomic challenges. This can be credited to long-term diversification strategies and investments in future-focused sectors. The next wave of growth will be enabled by accelerating the national transformation journey, implementing high-impact sectoral strategies and governance, guided by NDS-3, and building new capabilities and global partnerships. We see immense potential for Qatar to continue benefiting from advancements in areas, such as renewables and green hydrogen, logistics, tourism and sports, and AI, which will allow it to further cement its position as a global hub for sustainability and innovation.”

The report further highlights five critical cross-sectoral enablers that underpin the four critical sectors and are considered to be fundamental to their success: access to capital, a competitive business ecosystem, strong governance policies and regulations, a highly skilled workforce and build on its resilient physical and digital infrastructure.
