Fantastic trip with Legend Travel. Great instant support from Danny if any minor issues arose. Nostalgia Cruise of Halong Bay was a real highlight. All guides were very nice but a special call out to Tin Tin in Ho Chi Minh and Bob in Cambodia for their fantastic knowledge and great English

The ceo was very well organised and efficient making the tour run smoothly despite the very intense itinerary. Majority of the group getting stomach bug/ food poisoning was very unfortunate, but not the CEO’s fault, however avoiding that would’ve made the experience even better.

Excellent trip! Sony was an amazing guide. The itinerary is very busy but you feel like you really experience the area. The border crossings can be rough so prepare for this. Other than that, it’s great.

Vietnam and Cambodia - 14 Days. Departure every Saturday from Hanoi Tour

Vietnam and Cambodia - 14 Days. Departure every Saturday from Hanoi

We had an amazing time on this tour. Lots of brilliant memories and experiences, we would book again. The good: the places we went to were really nice. A lot of highlights and the route going north to south ticked off all the sites we wanted to see. Finishing in Siem Reap was a great way to relax as well as seeing the incredible Ankor Wat. The tour guides were all very friendly and knowledgeable. We also enjoyed all the hotels and never felt let down by them. The group that we travelled in was small and this really added to the pleasant experience by making it feel more personal. Things for improvement: some of the organisation could have been better. Spending the morning at Hue before flying to HCMC could have been improved by taking the earlier flight and having an afternoon to explore HCMC. Additionally, some of the stops on the way weren't so interesting and felt more like a chance to try and sell us jewellery or gifts.

Cambodia Adventure Tour

Cambodia Adventure

This trip was not what I expected - it was SO much MORE!! I was nervous travelling to a non-english speaking country, as a female, with a teenage daughter in tow, but it has become one of the BEST experiences of my entire life!! The trip was well organised and planned, our tour leader Mony was amazing - he shared his culture and knowledge with us, and was approachable. We met amazing people and created great friendships, while we experienced the true culture and people of Cambodia. There is a lot of travel, but the transport was safe and comfortable, and even with the long hours of travel there were plenty of stops and opportunities to experience and interact with locals, and still time to explore/do activities when we reached our destinations. Use the travel time to get to know the other members of your group better, or watch the world go by - there is plenty to look at! The hotels/guesthouses were mostly what we expected for the price we paid, but some were better! Can't wait for our next trip!!

A wonderful fascinating trip. Fellow travellers great. Cruise director excellent. Horrified by the plastic rubbish in Cambodia. Would reccommend it.

Fascinating Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong River with Hanoi, Ha Long Bay & Bangkok (Southbound) 2024

Amazing experience with flawless service. Our guides in Vietnam and Cambodia were so informative and open with their knowledge and history. The staff on the Saigon ship made the experience so lovely and truly took care of us.

Epic Asia Tour

My first part of epic Asia was in Thailand for 18 days. It was the best thing I have ever done. Such a beautiful country, very good activities (you explore so much and in so much detail) and excellent food (even as having an intolerance to dairy). Especially our tour leader Mea was amazing. She was great with recommendations, telling us all information in advance for us to prepare for things and was great with planning stuff such as onward travel and fun games to team build together. I would 100% recommend this tour.

Journey to Angkor Wat - 15 days Tour

Journey to Angkor Wat - 15 days

This trip included most of the highlights of Vietnam and Cambodia. It was stress free due to everything being organised efficiently. The pace was good and provision was made for people struggling with the more strenuous parts. There is quite a lot of walking on rough terrain. The guides were knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The hotels are good or very good. The coaches were good. Food was good with non spicy options for the less adventurous in the group. Vietnam and Cambodia, especially, have lots of litter, motorbikes and smelly bits along with magnificent tourist attractions. We normally go solo but an "On The Go" tour of this part of the world had the benefits of good guides and organisation. We are pleased we chose them.

Best of Vietnam & Cambodia

18 days | travel into the heart and soul of south east asia.

Intrepid Travel Vietnam Hoi-An group street

Take an unforgettable adventure through two of the most colourful yet contrasting cultures in South East Asia. Starting off in Vietnam, cruise through dramatic karst scenery on a boat tour of Ha Long Bay, step back into the world of the country's last emperors in Hue, soak up the old-world charm of Hoi An and be awed by the endless energy of Ho Chi Minh City. In Cambodia, discover the country's fascinating history and culture in Phnom Penh's heaving streets and in the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor. This is a journey that draws you away from the crowds and into heart and soul of this captivating region, and its equally enchanting people.

Trip overview

  • Sail through Ha Long Bay’s limestone karsts and island caves, visit a centre that turns the bay’s discarded trash into treasures and spend the night checking out the stars on an overnight cruise.
  • Travel like a local on a motorbike tour, riding pillion and taking in the historical pagodas, bridges and villages of Hue.
  • Watch the sun rising over Angkor Wat as it did over 800 years ago with your leader. Wander through the amazing ancient temples on a guided tour and with a three-day Angkor pass to cover your whole time in Siem Reap, you can explore this incredible temple complex as much and as often as you like.
  • Discover the countryside around Battambang on a bike ride around rural farms to meet with local producers, through an Intrepid partner and social enterprise that supports the local communities.
  • Experience life on water on a boat tour visiting the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake and understand the deep bond between the late and the local communities.
  • In order to see as much as possible, this trip involves some long journeys, including by overnight train where the amenities are shared and basic. For more about what this experience is like, see our blog post here:
  • intrepidtravel.com/adventures/what-to-expect-on-an-overnight-train-in-vietnam/
  • Depending on where you come from, the weather in Vietnam might be hotter and more humid than what you are used to. Please consider your suitability to the season you wish to travel in. Check out intrepidtravel.com/vietnam/weather-in-vietnam for more info.
  • There are some long travel days by both private and public transport (up to 10 hours on the road), including the days that you cross from Vietnam to Cambodia and Cambodia to Thailand. Your leader and local guides will assist with the border crossings, but plenty of patience is advised.
  • Some travellers enjoy Siem Reap so much that they decide they want to stay there longer, rather than continuing with the group to Bangkok. You are welcome to sign off the trip to enjoy more of Cambodia, however we aren’t able to reimburse any unused services or provide alternate onward travel arrangements.
  • At times your accommodation may not have continuous hot water. Most travellers don’t find this a problem however, and are often keen to cool down from the heat with a refreshing cold shower.

Xin chao! Welcome to Hanoi! Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm at the hotel and is followed by a group dinner at KOTO restaurant. This organisation is dedicated to developing the hospitality careers of disadvantaged youth. If you arrive early, there’s plenty to see and do. Consider booking the Hanoi Street Food Experience at 9 am (see urbanadventures.com/en for details). You'll get to sample delicious Vietnamese cuisine like a true local, stroll through the hidden alleyways and bustling markets and take in a spectacular view of Hoan Kiem lake from a secret café. Or maybe take it at your own pace and wander the Old Quarter to admire the city’s French-colonial architecture.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Hanoi - KOTO dinner
  • Hanoi - Women's Museum - VND30000
  • Hanoi - Museum of Ethnology - VND40000
  • Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh Complex - VND80000
  • Hanoi - Hanoi Street Food Experience Urban Adventure - USD40

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

To book an Urban Adventure before you meet your tour leader, go to urbanadventures.com/destination/hanoi-tours.

Travel by private minibus to World Heritage-listed Ha Long Bay, which is dotted with sandy coves, grottoes and 1600 limestone islands formed over millennia by wind and water erosion. Board a private boat and cruise the bay, exploring Surprise Cave and perhaps even enjoying a swim from Ti Top Island Beach during the warmer months. Access to Surprise Cave is via staircases. Once inside the cave the pathways are a little uneven and slippery. To end the day, spend an evening aboard the boat beneath the night sky. What better way to get to know your fellow travellers than an old school sleepover in an unforgettable location?

  • Overnight boat (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - Overnight Boat Cruise
  • Halong Bay - Cave entry
  • Halong Bay - Kayaking Tour - VND250000

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Your wooden junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with air-conditioning and private facilities. There's also a dining room and bar to enjoy lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Kayaking and swimming is restricted to designated zones within the bay.

There are restrictions on the number of boats that are permitted to stay in the bay overnight, sometimes resulting in a shortage. To ensure all Intrepid travellers can enjoy the experience of a night on the water, occasionally you will stay on a larger boat (with approximately 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or your group may be split across different vessels, in which case an Intrepid group leader will be present on each boat. The route taken and inclusions on board will remain the same.

Wake up on the waters of Ha Long Bay, and before you leave the memorable scenery behind, it’s time for one last stop. The Green Life Centre is committed to turning Halong Bay’s trash into treasure by collecting discarded items and skillfully turning them into beautiful handicrafts. Meet the team behind this important cause and learn how to transform rubbish into a useful and reusable bag. After your visit, return by bus to Hanoi. Arrive late this afternoon and enjoy free time until tonight’s train voyage. Be sure to grab a bowl of pho while you’re in town and slurp down this local specialty made from broth, noodles and meat. Maybe chill by Hoan Kiem Lake until you board an overnight train to Hue this evening.

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - The Green Life Visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours, not including your overnight train.

Shared day use hotel rooms are arranged in Hanoi if you would like to freshen up before the overnight train (one room for every six group members).

Sleeper trains typically have four or six berth compartments with bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. Depending on the configuration of the group, you may need to share with people of different genders or passengers who aren’t part of the group. Your leader will coordinate this and give further information about the train.

Arrive in Hue this morning and transfer to the hotel. Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue holds the treasures of the country’s royal past. Enjoy free time in the morning to rest or explore. If you choose the latter (and who can blame you) the bustling Dong Ba Market is a great place to sample some of the specialties that once graced the Nguyen emperors' tables like banh khoai (royal rice cake). Reunite with the group to visit the war-damaged ruins of the Imperial Citadel, a sprawling city-within-a-city which contains the remains of temples, state houses and the emperor’s palace.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Hue - Imperial City entrance and guided visit

See Hue like a local – from the back of a motorbike! Straddle the saddle and whiz around town with a local guide, taking in historic and contemporary sights along the way. Stop at Thanh Toan to see the 18th-century covered bridge and villagers shopping at their local market. Visit the 17th-century active Buddhist monastery of Thien Mu Pagoda and see the car that belonged to Thich Quang Duc, the monk who self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime. For lunch, savour a vegetarian feast in a nunnery. Finish at the lakeside royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc before heading back to town.

  • Hue - Royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc
  • Hue - Highlights & back streets by motorbike
  • Hue - Thien Mu Pagoda
  • Hue - Motorbike Tour Lunch

The motorbike tour has been assessed for safety and is closely monitored. To participate please ensure your travel insurance covers riding pillion on a motorbike up to 125cc. If you prefer not to participate, please let your leader know and they will arrange car transportation (cost included).

This morning travel by bus through coastal rice paddies and the spectacular Hai Van Pass. After a photo stop on the way, arrive into Hoi An. Recently declared a World Heritage site, Hoi An was a major international trading port during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Today, parts of the beautifully-preserved town retain the feel of centuries past. It's also a shopping mecca, famous for its plethora of tailors. When you arrive, your leader will take you on a sightseeing walk through the Old Town to visit a handful of the city's major attractions. You’ll also be given a sightseeing pass so you can further explore select attractions at your leisure.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Today is a free day to explore Hoi An. Maybe browse the cobbled streets and art galleries or hire a bike and cycle through rice paddies out to Cua Dai Beach. Maybe browse for paintings, ceramics and colourful cloth lanterns in the town’s markets and preserved Chinese shophouses. If you’re craving a new look, you could pay a visit to one of the hundreds of tailors and get something special made. Hoi An is also known for its delicious regional food, so be sure to enjoy a meal at a riverside restaurant or perhaps partake in a cooking class.

  • Hoi An - Private Hoi An: My Son Discovery - USD77

Today take a short, early morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has a fascinating history and is arguably Vietnam’s capital of commerce and culture. After landing, take a sightseeing tour around the city by bus. Pass the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House, then stop in at the War Remnants Museum to discover some of the sobering stories of the 20-year-long Vietnam/American War.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum
  • Ho Chi Minh City - City tour
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Reunification Palace - VND40000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - A O show - VND1050000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Saigon Street Food by Night Urban Adventure - USD36

Your travel time today will be approximately 1.5 hours.

This morning head out on a day trip to explore the Mekong Delta. Board a private boat to Ben Tre to visit the coconut gardens and stop at a local home to sample tropical fruits and coconut jams. After, paddle in sampans (small rowing boats) past coconut trees along the Mekong Delta. Take a tuk-tuk tour around the villages and learn about rural life and the industry created around coconut products like brooms and coconut fibre mats. Eat lunch at a restaurant in the heart of the Delta, sampling regional specialties such as the famous elephant ear fish. Cruise the major waterways to Ben Tre boat pier, then return by bus to Ho Chi Minh City. This evening, perhaps head out to sample some local specialties as a final farewell with your fellow travellers and leader.

If you have free time before the meeting, get out and discover the city's blend of old and new, East and West at your own pace. The Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum are great sites to learn more about Vietnam's history. If you arrive a day or two early, the Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta make for excellent and insightful day trips from the city. After your meeting tonight, why not grab your group and head out for dinner.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum - VND40000

Travel by public bus across the border, through rural Vietnam and Cambodia and onto Phnom Penh. Cambodia's capital city is set on a major junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and boasts some fine examples of French-inspired architecture. If you're looking for a tasty beverage when you arrive, head for a mojito on the rooftop or if you're in the mood for shopping, stop in at the art-deco Psar Thmei (Central Market) or travel out to Psar Tuol Tom Pong (the Russian Market) for the best range of local souvenirs.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours including border crossing and lunch stop.

On the bus journey across the border, you will exit Vietnam at Moc Bai and enter Cambodia at Ba Vet. Your leader will assist you with border crossing procedures. You will also have the comfort of being on the same bus throughout the journey with less hassle at the border crossing by changing vehicles. If you’d prefer not to travel by bus today, you are welcome to book a flight instead (at your own expense).

Today, confront Cambodia's tragic past on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21), a former school which served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre. It's estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here. You’ll also head out to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a stupa made up of some 8000 human skulls marks the execution ground for the torture victims of Tuol Sleng. Afterwards, you may wish to learn about a brighter period in Cambodian history from an optional visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Wat Phnom, shrouded in myth, is equally worth a visit, as is the National Museum with its excellent Khmer collection. Cyclo tours around the city are a great alternative to walking and generally include the Central Market, US Embassy, Wat Phnom, Mekong riverfront, the Independence Monument and Royal Palace.

  • Phnom Penh - The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek

This is an important part of Cambodia’s recent history that we feel is important for travellers to know. If you would prefer not to join these activities your leader can recommend some optional alternatives. Some further information on visiting these sites can be found here: intrepidtravel.com/adventures/importance-visiting-cambodia-killing-fields

Highlights of Hanoi and an Evening Show

Your private guide will pick you up from the hotel right after breakfast.

Start your city tour at the Thang Long Citadel. Built by the Ly Viet Dynasty in the 11th century to mark the independence of the Dai Viet. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, the Citadel was a political center of the country for 13 consecutive centuries and served as the capital of Vietnam for eight centuries.

Visit the secret underground war bunker which played an important role in the American War, especially during the 12 days and nights of the Ha Noi – Dien Bien Phu air battle of 1972.

Continue to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first national university built in the late 11th century.

Drive back to central Hanoi for a walking tour through the famed Old Quarter known for its ‘36 streets of 36 wares’ named after the original 36 artisan guilds that date as far back as the 13th century.

In the evening, you will be picked up for a ride to the Sai Son Village, for an impressive Show, performed by nearly 200 farmers from the village.

Set in the open-air large amphitheater, the show draws inspiration from the spiritual history of the nearby Thay Pagoda by telling the story of the pagoda’s founding by venerable monk Tu Dao Hanh and explains the ancient union between religion and the monarchy.

The show blends different aspects of the cultural Quintessence of Tonkin: Poetry, Buddhism, Nostalgia, Music & Painting, Joy & Festivities. The 1000 years old art of water puppetry will bring you vivid images of daily rural life in Vietnam.

Right before the show, you will have a chance to try some local dishes from the outdoor food village right at the venue.

Saigon Highlights

With over eight million inhabitants and four million motorbikes, Saigon is truly a city that never sleeps.

Despite its modernity, Saigon maintains a strong link to the past and our city tour takes in some of Saigon’s most historic landmarks including the Notre Dame Cathedral, a red brick edifice with twin spires constructed from materials imported from France.

Then head across the square to the Central Post Office, completed in 1891. A short drive away is the former Presidential Palace, the headquarters of the Saigon Government during the American War. Continue to the War Remnants Museum for a vivid perspective of the American War through the eyes of the Vietnamese. (Please note that some of the displays are very graphic.)

Experience Saigon’s famed street coffee culture while your guide provides a brief language lesson as well as insights into the daily life of a Saigonese before returning to your hotel.

In the evening, meet your driver for a very short ride to the Opera House for a marvelous show.  A spectacular combination of dance, acrobatics, live music, and theatre, created to bring the metaphors of Vietnamese traditions and tales into life.

Cu Chi Tunnels with War Veteran

The ingenious Cu Chi tunnel complex is an immense network of connecting underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong as hiding spots during combat.

Originally dug in 1948 as a refuge from French air and ground sweeps, the tunnels also served as living quarters, communication, and supply routes, housed hospitals, food, and weapons caches throughout the American War.

Visit the underground villages with a VC veteran who once lived there, for a better understanding of the tunnels’ history, the hardship of life in the tunnels, and the Vietnamese resilience during combat.

With the help of your translator-guide, listen as the veteran recalls how he survived the living conditions of the subterranean hamlets where lack of air, food, and water made conditions almost unbearable.

Return to Saigon in the afternoon.

Helicopter over Angkor and Haute Couture

Meet your guide after breakfast. Take a private car to the airport from where you take a helicopter and climb up to heights from where the entire Angkor Complex can be observed.

Located 65 kilometers from Siem Reap, Beng Mealea is a sprawling jungle temple constructed by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. It preceded and may have served as a prototype of sorts for Angkor Wat.

Today the temple is largely overrun by vegetation and the stone walls are crumbling which uniquely adds to its charm. Accessibility has improved as elevated walkways have been set up throughout most of the temple, although it requires a sense of adventure to see all corners as you will need to climb over stone blocks or walk through narrow passageways.

Angkor Temples at Your Own Pace

It’s a full day around the Angkor Archeological Park today.

After breakfast, transfer by private car to Ta Prohm – one of Angkor’s jewels. Overgrown with fig trees, giving a haunting yet exotic atmosphere, is the most photographable.

From here drive a short distance to Ta Keo, which would have been one of the finest temples in Angkor had it been completed.

Continue to Angkor Thom – an entire walled city, the royal Capital in the 12th century. With a population of 1 million, it was far bigger than any city in Europe at the time. The amazing centerpiece is Bayon temple crowned with 216 giant, smiling faces of King Jayavarman VII.

Take a lunch break before the exploration of Angkor Wat, claimed to be the largest religious building in the world. The temple, which took 30 years to construct & used the labor of 300,000 workers was built as the earthly representation of the universe with its’ central tower symbolizing Mt Meru – the center of the Universe.

The Best of Vietnam and Cambodia Suggested Itinerary

An itinerary that masterfully blends the colourful cities of Cambodia and Vietnam with downtime in tranquil pockets of these mesmerising countries.

Hanoi is the perfect springboard for your journey, awakening your senses in your first three days. Moving through ever-changing gears, you’ll cruise Halong Bay, boat along the Perfume River, and get swept up in the melee of Ho Chi Minh city, ending on a reflective note in the temples of Siem Reap.

Recommended itinerary

The capital of Vietnam is the perfect introduction to your adventure. Between the t’ai chi at dawn, the waft of beef noodle soup in the air, and the horns and revs of scooters, you’ll get that glorious “I’ve arrived!” feeling. A private driver and guide will take you to the city hotspots, returning you to the peaceful sanctuary of the Mövenpick to relax after a busy day exploring.

It would be remiss to visit this part of the world and not see the beautiful Halong Bay. Boarding a traditional-style junk and taking an overnight cruise makes sure you see the best of it. There’s the chance to kayak through caves and find a quiet patch on a private beach, too.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay, Vietnam

You’ll fly from Hanoi to Hue to spend the next couple of nights in a countryside retreat outside Hue. You’re here long enough to spend a day exploring the highlights of Vietnam’s former capital, possibly including traditional dragon boat trip.

Hue, Vietnam

Dragon boat, Hue, Vietnam

Time in Hoi An follows, and from your base at the lovely Almanity Hoi An Resort & Spa, you’ll venture out on a half-day guided walking tour to visit a traditional Vietnamese house and other city highlights. A boat trip along the Thu Bon River allows a different perspective of the city.

Board your flight to Hanoi today.

Welcome to Vietnam! Transfer to your hotel to settle in.

Join your Tour Director and fellow travelers on a guided exploration of Hanoi. Vietnam’s capital city is known for its centuries-old architecture, as well as its rich, cultural heritage, which includes a mix of Southeast Asian, Chinese, and French influences.

  • Pass Ba Đình Square, where Ho Chi Minh—the revolutionary leader and president of North Vietnam—read the Proclamation of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
  • Wander through the 11th-century Temple of Literature, a walled complex that’s dedicated to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and was the site of Vietnam’s first university.
  • Visit the site of Hỏa Lò Prison—sarcastically nicknamed the “Hanoi Hilton” by American detainees—where the late U.S. Senator and presidential contender John McCain was held as a POW for more than five years during the Vietnam War.
  • Tour the museum that occupies the remaining prison structure, and learn about POWs’ harrowing experiences in captivity.
  • Board a bicycle rickshaw and ride through the busy Old Quarter, an area that’s rich with Vietnamese architecture, green spaces, locally owned shops, and street food vendors.
  • Pass Đồng Xuân Market (one of the largest wholesale markets in the north of Vietnam), the Hanoi Opera House (built in the early 1900s by a pair of French architects), and Hoàn Kiếm Lake (its name, which translates to Lake of the Restored Sword, derives from a legend that was set there).

Get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers at a welcome lunch served with beer or wine. Then, enjoy free time for the rest of the day in Hanoi or add an excursion.

A Day in Ninh Bình

From $115 per person

Transfer to Ha Long Bay and embark on a luxurious, overnight cruise aboard a small ship. As you explore this striking setting and UNESCO World Heritage site by boat, you’ll pass by many of its nearly 2,000 limestone islands and islets, most of which are uninhabited and unaffected by human presence.

  • Once on board the ship, enjoy a welcome drink, followed by an included lunch served with beer or wine.
  • Cruise past notable natural features, including Fighting Cocks Islet, Thien Cung Cave, and Dau Go Cave.
  • Climb aboard a small tender with a guide from your ship and motor across the water to Sung Sot Cave—the largest and, according to many, most beautiful cave in the bay.
  • Get back on board your tender for a ride to your next stop, Tung San Pearl Farm, where you’ll learn how pearls are grown using traditional Vietnamese methods and new Japanese technology.
  • After visiting the pearl farm, if you’d like, paddle a kayak along the waters of Ha Long Bay to enjoy up-close views of the water and scenery.
  • Return to your ship to enjoy a Vietnamese cooking demonstration, then sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Join a sunrise lesson in Tai Chi—a gentle form of exercise that originated in China as a martial art—on the ship this morning, if you’d like. Then, hop into a small boat and make your way to Ti Top Island for time spent swimming or hiking to the top of the island to enjoy stunning views of Hạ Long Bay.

After enjoying an included lunch, disembark your cruise ship later this morning and board a flight to Ho Chi Minh City.

Join your Tour Director this morning for a guided exploration of Vietnam’s largest city, formerly known as Saigon. There’s much to discover in the city, including museums that detail its wartime past, as well as French colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and ornate temples.

  • Witness Vietnam’s progression from French colony to unified, independent nation as you enter the Reunification Palace, which was once the seat of South Vietnam’s government.
  • Make your way to the French Colonial district, stopping en route to view architectural highlights including the General Post Office, City Hall, and Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica.
  • Wander among popular Bến Thành Market’s 1,500 stalls, whose vendors sell everything from food to cosmetics, and stroll along Lê Công Kiều, a street known for its treasure trove of antiques.
  • Take a self-guided tour of the War Remnants Museum to get the local perspective on the Vietnam War.

Spend the afternoon learning more about the history and impact of the Vietnam War.

  • Travel by coach to the Củ Chi Tunnels, then join a local guide for a tour of the vast underground network built and used by Viet Cong guerrilla troops to transport supplies and communications, house soldiers, and mount surprise attacks against American and South Vietnamese forces.
  • See secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas, and meeting rooms.

Please note: Your guide will advise you of the length and level of difficulty of each tunnel before entering. Those preferring to remain above ground will have ample opportunity to view excavated areas. Good walking shoes and sun protection are recommended, as are clothes that can get slightly dirty.

Enjoy a free day in Ho Chi Minh City or add an excursion.

  • Flavorful Vietnamese cuisine relies on mint, coriander, cinnamon, ginger, lime, lemongrass, and Thai basil. Foods are cooked minimally, from lightly grilled meats to blanched vegetables. Seafood, often flavored with ginger, is popular, as are chicken, duck, and pork. Don’t miss dishes like spicy beef noodle soup and banh mi—a baguette filled with paté, cold cuts, and pickled vegetables.
  • International influence is evident in the Khmer cuisine of Cambodia, where full flavor is created through the mix of herbs and spices such as sweet basil, Asian coriander, mint, lemongrass, and pepper. The base of almost all Cambodian dishes is rice or noodles, served with a curry, soup, or vegetable stir-fry. Grilled freshwater fish is popular, and the fermented fish paste known as prahok is a traditional seasoning.
  • Traditional Thai cooking uses market-fresh ingredients seasoned with a mix of herbs, spices, and condiments, such as chili peppers and fish sauce. The main staple is rice.
  • On the tour extension, sticky rice is the most popular and most important element in Laotian cuisine. No matter where you go, you’ll find this traditional dish. Travelers should also try green papaya salad and larb—meat or seafood mixed with fresh herbs.

Most hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, buses, and airlines list their prices in U.S. dollars, but small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually conducted in riel. Always carry small amounts of riel for motorcycle taxis, snacks, and other small purchases.

  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.

Diversity is absolutely one of the most enchanting features of Vietnam and Cambodia. Places to See in Cambodia and Vietnam

Vietnam and Cambodia, neighboring Southeast Asian countries, present distinct travel experiences.

Vietnam boasts diverse landscapes, from the northern rice terraces to the iconic Ha Long Bay, and is rich in history with influences from China, France, and the United States. Its vibrant cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offer a blend of traditional and modern charm, and the cuisine is celebrated for its freshness and flavors.

On the other hand, Cambodia is renowned for the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat and the Khmer Empire's historical sites, set amidst lush landscapes. The country embraces Khmer culture, featuring unique dishes such as amok and showcasing a slower pace of life.

Top Things to Do in Vietnam

1. Explore the Old Quarter in Hanoi : explore the city's charm by visiting sites like the elegant Bach Ma Temple and Dong Xuan Market, the oldest local market in the city.

2. Stay overnight on a cruise to see Halong Bay : exercise with water activities like swimming, kayaking, or canoeing, and enjoy the sunset on the cruise deck with a cup of beer in hand.

3. Trek in Sapa among the rice fields : bring yourself closer to the raw nature of Vietnam.

4. Track back to the last emperor's life in Hue : a good destination for history buffs.

5. Soak in the beauty of Hoi An Old Town : strolling around the lantern-lit streets, you will have a sense of peace and tranquility.

6. Visit the floating markets along the Mekong Delta via a boat ride : they have retained their traditional way of doing business.

7. Relax on a wonderful beach on Phu Quoc Island in South Vietnam : enjoy sunbathing, and fresh seafood, as well as fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling.

Top Things to Do in Cambodia

1. Explore the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant archaeological sites in Southeast Asia.

2. Take in the charming countryside scenery on a quad bike in Siem Reap : pass the seldom-visited local villages, rice fields, and temples, and reward yourself with an amazing countryside sunset.

3. Take a boat trip on Tonle Sap , the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. See Siem Reap from another perspective as you pass the floating villages, which still retain the lifestyle of the ancient Cambodians.

4. Sense the misery of the Khmer Rouge period in Phnom Penh : Although it's sad and even disturbing to visit the Killing Fields and S-21 Prison, this will get you acquainted with one of the worst human tragedies of the last century.

How Long Do You Need in Vietnam and Cambodia?

We highly recommend allocating a minimum of 12 days for your inaugural journey to Vietnam and Cambodia. For an even more enriching experience, consider extending your trip to 14 days . This extended timeframe allows for a leisurely exploration, enabling you to cover a broader range of destinations and partake in a diverse array of activities, all at a relaxed pace.

Vietnam: (8-12 days)

  • Hanoi (2-3 days)
  • Halong Bay (2-3 days)
  • Hoi An (2-3 days)
  • Ho Chi Minh City (2-3 days)

Cambodia: (3-7 days)

  • Siem Reap (3-4 days)
  • Phnom Penh (2-3 days)
  • Optional: Sihanoukville or Kampot (2-3 days)

Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary Ideas: 12 Days and 2 Weeks

Our 12-Day Cambodia and Vietnam Highlights Tour is a classic tour for your inspiration, designed for those who want to visit all the must-see destinations and essential sights in both Vietnam and Cambodia within a limited timeframe.

What we are suggesting is the hardest-to-easiest approach. Cambodia's cultural attributes demand more of your engagement: emotions are drawn at the Killing Fields and S21 Museum and a lot of walking is required at the Angkor Wat Complex. Vietnam is relatively relaxing and can be a good wind-down after Cambodia.

  • Day 1: Phnom Penh Arrival, Cambodia
  • Day 2: Phnom Penh (Heart-Breaking Past and Hopeful Present)
  • Day 3: Phnom Penh – Siem Reap (1-hour flight or 6-hour drive along Tonle Sap), Tomb Raider Experience
  • Day 4: Siem Reap (Angkor Wat in Depth)
  • Day 5: Siem Reap – Ho Chi Minh City by flight | Saigon at Dusk
  • Day 6: Ho Chi Minh City | Mekong Impression
  • Day 7: Ho Chi Minh City – Hoi An (Danang Airport)
  • Day 8: Hoi An Ancient Town
  • Day 9: Hoi An (Danang Airport) – Hanoi
  • Day 10: Hanoi from a Different Angle
  • Day 11: Hanoi – Halong Bay | Relaxing Cruising in Halong Bay
  • Day 12: Halong Bay – Hanoi, Hanoi Departure

What sets apart this tour is the presence of a dedicated scholar of Angkor culture who will guide you through the intricacies of Angkor Wat. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to soak in breathtaking views of Halong Bay on a carefully selected cruise , characterized by its smaller size, providing more privacy and intimacy. Glide through a hidden canal in the less-touristy area of the Mekong Delta aboard a traditional sampan, and experience more unique and memorable moments throughout the journey. What Is the Best Time to Visit Vietnam and Cambodia?

Both countries are subject to a monsoon climate. There are three main seasons in Vietnam and Cambodia:

  • Dry season : November to February
  • Hot season : March to May (temperatures consistently get up to around 38°C (100°F))
  • Rainy season : June to October (it usually rains in the afternoon and at night, so it's easy to plan around the weather)

The best time to visit both Vietnam and Cambodia is during the dry season, which typically spans from November to March . This period generally offers more comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring cultural sites, outdoor activities, and enjoying landscapes.

The shoulder seasons , such as late November or early December and late March or early April, can offer a balance between favorable weather and fewer tourists.

The hot season and the rainy season are not so comfortable for travel, but you will find fewer crowds and lower prices for flights and accommodation.

Typhoons from July to September

Typhoons typically strike the northern to central coast of Vietnam during the July-to-September typhoon season, potentially leading to cruise cancellations in Halong Bay and the risk of flooding in Hoi An Ancient Town.

Cambodia seldom gets struck by storms, except for Sihanoukville during the typhoon season.

How to Get to Vietnam and Cambodia?

If you are traveling from the USA or Europe, it's advisable to consider starting your journey in one of Vietnam's prominent cities, like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, due to their accessibility from international destinations. In Cambodia, major airports include Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

To travel between Vietnam and Cambodia, you have three options: by boat, by plane, or by road.

  • Flying: Opting for air travel is the most convenient choice, requiring only 1–2 hours for the journey.
  • Boat Travel: Choosing to travel by boat provides a unique experience along the Mekong River. You have two notable options—a 5-hour ferry departing from Chau Doc in Vietnam to Phnom Penh or a longer cruise option, either a 4-day cruise between Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh or an 8-day cruise between Ho Chi Minh and Siem Reap.
  • Road Travel: While not recommended due to its extended duration of about 7 hours, traveling by road is a feasible but time-consuming option.

How to Obtain Visas for Vietnam and Cambodia?

Vietnam visas.

Holders of normal passports issued by the following countries do not require a visa to visit Vietnam:

  • Europe : United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Belarus, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Russia, Sweden
  • South and Middle America : Chile, Panama

Cambodia Visas

Regular passport holders from the following countries do not require a visa to visit Cambodia (for the following periods):

  • Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam (30 days)
  • Philippines (21 days)
  • Thailand (14 days)

If you are from other countries, you can apply for an e-Visa online for US$37 before arrival, or you may do it on the spot when you enter Cambodia as a Visa-on-Arrival (30 USD for single entry). 3 weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia: Complete Travel Guide & Perfect Itinerary

What You’ll Find in this Blog

Planning a 3-week journey to Vietnam is quite easy but it may be too much if in Cambodia due to this country being a bit smaller. It is really a perfect idea to believe that combining two places will maximize your use of your family holiday. This comprehensive travel guide and perfect itinerary will help you plan an unforgettable journey through the highlights of Vietnam and Cambodia. From the best time to visit, visa information, currency details, and a week-by-week itinerary, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in!

What can you expect in Vietnam and Cambodia for 3 weeks?

A three-week trip to Vietnam and Cambodia offers a perfect balance of cultural exploration, natural beauty, and historical sites. While they share a land border, it’s recommended to fly between the two countries for convenience and time-saving purposes.

Both Vietnam and Cambodia have a shared history, including the tragic wars that took place in the 1970s. If you’re interested, you can also plan a three-week itinerary that includes Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam to further explore the connections between these countries.

Vietnam and Cambodia charms

For travelers coming from North and Latin America, the journey to Vietnam and Cambodia can be quite long. However, rest assured that the trip is worthwhile, and you’ll have the opportunity to discover the wonders of these Southeast Asian destinations.

In Cambodia, you’ll have the chance to explore the world-famous Angkor Wat, an impressive temple complex that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Additionally, you can witness the mesmerizing phenomenon of bioluminescent plankton and take a ride on Battambang’s popular bamboo train.

In Vietnam, you’ll be captivated by the beauty of Halong Bay, a stunning seascape of limestone islands. The mountainous region of Sa Pa offers breathtaking landscapes, while the historic city of Hanoi showcases its rich heritage and culture. Both Angkor Wat and Halong Bay are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites, highlighting their exceptional value.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Both Vietnam and Cambodia?

In general, the best time to visit both Vietnam and Cambodia is from October to March . However, it’s important to note some specific considerations for each month:

  • October and November are the rainy season in Central Vietnam, so be prepared for occasional showers.
  • December is winter in northern Vietnam, and it can get quite cold, especially in mountainous regions. The landscape may not be as vibrant, but you can still enjoy the cultural aspects and urban areas.
  • January and February are the dry season in both Vietnam and Cambodia, offering pleasant weather for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
  • March witnesses one of the most beautiful months for outstanding landscapes in Vietnam’s mountains. However, both Vietnam and Cambodia can be crowded during this time, and prices for flights and accommodations may be higher.

Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your expectations and the availability of time for your journey. Consider your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and budget while planning your trip.

Vietnam and Cambodia Visa

Cambodia is one of the few countries that have straightforward visa rules, which is quite convenient for travelers. Unless your passport is from Southeast Asia (which receives a free visa), you only need to apply for an e-visa online or get a visa upon arrival.

Foreign visitors to Vietnam can also apply for an e-visa online, which is valid for 30 to 90 days. A 30-day e-visa cannot be renewed, but a visa on arrival for 30 to 90 days can be extended.

The visa fee ranges from $25 to $35, depending on the entry port, and the visa is valid for 30 days. When applying online, ensure that you have the correct dates, your flight number, port of entry, a digital passport photo, a bank card for payment, the address of your first hotel, and personal information.

The processing time typically takes between 3 to 7 business days, excluding weekends. So, if you submit your application on a Friday afternoon, you might have to wait until the following Friday. However, if you submit it on Monday, you should receive your e-visa before the end of the week.

For the rest of the world, except Africa, the Middle East, and some South Asian countries, it is necessary to apply for a visa in advance. However, most countries in Latin America, North America, Europe, Central Asia, and Oceania can apply for a 30-day e-visa.

When visiting Vietnam and Cambodia, it’s recommended to carry a mix of US dollars and local currency for convenience. Be sure to have small denominations for easier transactions and to negotiate better prices in local markets.

Vietnam and Cambodia Currency

In Vietnam, the official currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Cash is widely accepted, and ATMs are readily available in major cities and tourist areas. Credit cards are also accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and shops, but it’s advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments and markets.

Similarly, in Cambodia, the official currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR). However, the US dollar is widely accepted and preferred for most transactions. ATMs are widely available in cities, and credit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments.

Vietnam and Cambodia Electricity Information

When planning your visit to Vietnam and Cambodia, it’s essential to be aware of the electricity information, including the voltage and power plug types in each country.

  • The standard voltage: 220V
  • Primarily uses two types of power plugs:  Type A (the most common), which consists of two flat pins and Type C, which features two round pins.

For your information: Electricity in Vietnam: What you need to know before your journey

  • The standard voltage: 230V
  • Primarily uses two types of power plugs: Type A (the most common), which consists of two flat pins and Type C, which features two round pins. (However, type G outlets with three rectangular pins are becoming more prevalent in modern establishments).

it’s important to check the power requirements of your electronic devices before your trip. Many modern devices can handle a wide voltage range (usually 100V-240V) and automatically adapt to the local voltage. However, some devices may require a voltage converter to operate correctly.

By bringing a suitable travel adapter and considering the voltage compatibility of your electronic devices, you can easily charge your devices and navigate the electrical systems in Cambodia without any issues.

Southeast Asia Travel Guide

Last Updated: November 27, 2023

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

Backpackers have been traveling through Southeast Asia since the late 1960s and early 1970s, leaving a well-worn trail around the region.

Starting in beautiful Thailand, the trail makes its way to up-and-coming Laos, through Vietnam, and to the temples of Angkor Wat. It then winds back into Thailand, where people head south to party in the Thai islands before moving down to Malaysia and Singapore.

There are a few variations to the trail, but this is what it mostly covers.

I’ve been visiting this region since 2004 and spent years living in Thailand . I love backpacking Southeast Asia and have written extensively about it as I know it like the back of my hand.

It’s an especially great region for new travelers because it’s easy to travel around, it’s safe, and there are lots of other travelers you can meet. But it’s also perfect for veteran travelers too as there are tons of off-the-beaten-path destinations that the standard backpacker trail doesn’t cover.

In short, Southeast Asia has something for every traveler — and every budget.

This Southeast Asia travel guide will help you travel the region like a pro, ensuring you save money and make the most of your time in this fun, gorgeous, and lively corner of the world.

Top 5 things to see and do in southeast asia.

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

1. Admire Angkor Wat

One of the greatest human creations in history, the Angkor Wat temple complex is best explored over the course of a few days. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site created by the Khmer Empire and absolutely enormous. Temples to visit include Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple which has 216 gigantic stone face carvings, and Ta Prohm. I spent three days here and that simply wasn’t enough. A one-day pass is $37 USD, while a 1-week pass is $72 USD. If you’re here for multiple days, be sure to hire a driver and see some of the more out of the way ruins away from the main temple complex (and the crowds).

2. Explore Bangkok

Bangkok is the hub of travel activity in Southeast Asia. You can get anywhere you want from here. Though I hated it at first, the more I’ve spent time here the more I love it. Bangkok is like an onion whose many layers need to be peeled back. Some things not to miss include the spectacular Bangkok Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Chatuchak Market and Asiatique, and a canal trip on the Chao Phraya River. This is a city for foodies and wild nightlife.

3. Relax on some tropical islands

No visit to Southeast Asia would be complete without a visit to at least one of the thousands of tropical islands in the region. My top five include the Perhentian Islands (Malaysia), Rabbit Island (Cambodia), Ko Lanta (Thailand), and Boracay (Philippines). Lombok Island (Indonesia) has a chill vibe with unspoiled, perfect “desert island” beaches. There’s so many islands to visit. Be sure to add at least one to your trip. The country guides will have more information for you.

4. See Ha Long Bay

Sailing trips to this island-filled bay with stunning emerald waters, limestone formations, and marine life give you an appreciation for the natural beauty in Vietnam. Tours from Hanoi start at around $110 USD for two-day trips and increase from there. I love the colorful grottoes, hanging stalactites, and stalagmites of Surprise Cave (Sung Sot), Fairy Cave (Tien Ong), and Heaven Palace (Thien Cung). Make sure you go with a reputable company though as some of the cheaper boats are less than ideal. If you’d rather just visit for one day, day trips from Hanoi cost $55 USD.

5. Wander Kuala Lumpur

Other things to see and do in southeast asia, 1. go jungle trekking.

This region of the world is covered in amazing jungles with diverse wildlife, plentiful camping opportunities, and cool waterfalls. The best jungle treks are found in northern Thailand, Western Laos, and Malaysian Borneo (the latter are also the hardest and most intense). Some of my favorites include Danum Valley (Borneo) for its incredible wildlife; Ratanakiri (Cambodia) for its pristine wilderness and thousand-year-old trees; and Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Vietnam). Costs vary but jungle trekking generally costs $30-50 USD per day.

2. Attend the Full Moon Party

The biggest one-night party in the world welcomes up to 30,000 people with a party that stretches until dawn. Cover yourself in glow paint, grab a bucket of booze, and dance the night away with new friends on the island of Ko Phangan in Thailand. As the name would suggest, the party is on the night of the full moon. If you miss it, there’s always the half-moon party, quarter-moon party, and black-moon party. Really, every night is a party on Ko Phangan . Just avoid the flaming jump rope that occurs — I’ve seen people get burned badly!

3. Learn to dive

There are many great dive sites around the region for those interested in underwater exploration. You can learn to dive here at a fraction of what it would cost back home too. Some of the best places are Ko Tao (Thailand), Sipadan (Malaysia), as well as Gili Islands (Indonesia) and Coron, Palawan (The Philippines). A typical diving course is completed in three days. A PADI course typically runs $275 USD in Thailand, including three nights’ accommodation, though at smaller schools you can often negotiate down to $250 USD. Day trips for certified divers start at $165 USD. For information on Ko Tao, check out this blog post .

4. Eat street food in Singapore

Singapore is a foodie’s heaven. Try the hawker stalls of Singapore as well as Little India and Chinatown for some of the best and cheapest food in Asia. If you’re looking for a nice place to sit down and eat, eat at Singapore’s famed restaurants during lunch when restaurants offer discounts, making them a great deal. You’ll also find the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants here (Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice and Hawker Chan), offering world-class meals for just a couple of bucks!

5. Overload on temples

You can’t turn a corner without seeing a Buddhist temple in this part of the world. You’ll get temple overload at some point but visit as many as you can as each is unique to the country and region of the temple. There are so many places with high concentrations of ornate and beautiful temples. Check out Chiang Mai’s Wat Doi Suthep Temple and hike up the 300 steps to the golden Chedi that’s 600 years old!; Bagan’s Shwesandaw Pagoda from the 11th century with its stunning golden dome; Angkor Wat’s Ta Prohm is covered in iconic vines and enveloped in ancient jungle roots; Hue’s colorful Thien Mu Pagoda is perched atop a lush green embankment; Hoi An’s Quan Cong Temple with incredible Chinese architecture with hand-carved beauty and skill, and Luang Prabang’s Vat Xieng Thong with its golden, canopied roof. Most are free to enter, however, dress codes are enforced (you need to have your shoulders and legs covered).

6. Dive Sipadan

Located off Malaysian Borneo, Sipadan is one of the best dive sites in the world. If you have your dive certificate, make sure you venture out here. I absolutely love this area because it’s teeming with live turtles, diverse cave systems, sharks, dolphins, colorful coral, bright fish, and everything in between. Not a lot of people make it to this part of Malaysia, but it’s worth it to go the extra mile and make your way off the tourist trail a bit. Don’t miss Barracuda Point and The Drop-Off. Keep in mind that only 176 permits to dive at the island are issued each day, costing 140 MYR per person. The resorts on the neighboring islands each get a specific number of permits per day and require divers to stay with them for a few days. So you’ll need to stay at those resorts and dive into the surrounding areas before they can get you a Sipadan permit.

7. Fall in love with Bali

Bali is the most popular destination in Indonesia, and its famous Kuta beach is known for its wild parties and surfing ( though I think it’s overrated ). However, there is much more to Bali than just wild nights and sun-soaked days. If you’re a thrill seeker, hike up to the top of Mount Batur, an active volcano, for a breathtaking sunrise. Paragliding and white water rafting are also super popular here, as is surfing (it’s an affordable place to learn if you’ve never done it). There are also lots of hot springs to enjoy, the Ubud Monkey Forest (a popular temple and nature reserve home to hundreds of monkeys), and numerous places to scuba dive, including the Liberty wreck and Manta Point.

8. Take in Ho Chi Minh City

Frantic, chaotic, and crazy, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is the embodiment of the controlled chaos that rules Southeast Asia. You can’t quite figure out how this teeming mass of people and cars work together, but it does. Highlights here include touring the tunnels used by the Viet Cong in the 1960s, taking in the view from the Saigon Skydeck, eating your way through the street food scene, and seeing the city’s numerous temples.

9. Admire the sunrise over an Indonesian Volcano

One of the most popular tourist attractions on Java is Mount Bromo and its National Park. Don’t miss out on getting a photo of the smoldering Bromo volcano as it lies surrounded by the almost lunar landscape of the Sea of Sand. Get up early to catch one of the most memorable sunrises of your life. If you’re there in mid-August, you’ll be just in time to see Upacara Kasada, the traditional Hindu ritual of the Tenggerese, a Javanese tribe of the region.

10. Hike in Khao Sok National Park

Located in southern Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is constantly rated as one of the best parks in Thailand, with incredible trekking, camping, limestone karsts, cooling rivers, and a glistening lake. Visit for semi-challenging hikes, tons of wildlife, walking paths, and breathtaking sunsets. Park entrance costs around $6 USD while full-day guided tours are $95 USD. I highly recommend spending at least one night here to get the full experience.

11. Visit Kampot

Most people come to Kampot to enjoy the scenic riverside views, as well as the rolling hills that surround the city. Since you can explore easily enough on foot or by bicycle, Kampot is a great place to slow down and relax. There’s not much to do here but have lazy days by the river, chill, and eat (don’t miss the famous Rusty Keyhole for BBQ!). Don’t miss the pepper farms, as this region of Cambodia is filled with pepper farms where you can learn about the history of the spice, see how it is grown, and pick up what is considered some of the finest pepper in the world. Tours are usually free.

12. Take a cooking class

Food from this region is as varied as the countries themselves and learning how to cook a few dishes is a great souvenir of your time here. Even if you don’t plan to cook back home, you can still spend a day making and eating scrumptious food. Most big cities have cooking schools offering classes of 2-6 hours, often including a trip to the local market beforehand to select ingredients. I absolutely love cooking classes and urge you to take one at least once. They are a fun experience!

13. Take a food tour

If you’d rather eat instead of cook, taking a food tour is a fun way to gain insight into the region’s amazing noodle dishes, fresh seafood, sweets, and street food while learning about the history and culture behind the cuisine. Most major cities in Southeast Asia offer food tours. These include tours around local markets, street stalls, and tours to locally-owned restaurants and cafes where you can sample the local cuisine and connect with a local chef. If you’re nervous about street food, this is a great way to try some in a controlled setting. Tours usually last 2-4 hours and include multiple stops and several different dishes, with prices costing $40-75 USD per person.

14. Visit an elephant sanctuary

While riding an elephant is on many a Southeast Asia bucket list, once you know how much the animals suffer from abuse in order to provide these rides, you might think twice about taking one. An even better way to interact with elephants is to volunteer at or visit the Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai in Thailand. It’s a phenomenal place, allowing you to give back to the community and these magnificent animals all at once. After coming here, you will understand why you should NEVER ride an elephant. A one-day visit costs $70 USD.

15. See The Killing Fields

A visit to Choeung Ek, also known as the Killing Fields, may not be the most cheerful way to spend an afternoon, but it makes for an educational and memorable experience. Over 3 million people were killed by Pol Pot’s regime, including countless women and children. I recommend getting a guide so you can really understand what you’re seeing as you explore the area. Also, this horrific tragedy took place less than 50 years ago and is still very present so please be respectful as a visitor.  The site is located 10 miles from Phnom Penh. Half-day guided tours start at $66 USD.

16. Swim with Whale Sharks in Donsol

If you’re in the Philippines, check out the Donsol Whale Shark Interactive Ecosystem Project because there are not many experiences quite as adrenaline-inducing as swimming with a whale shark for the first time in crystal waters. These incredible creatures are around 45 feet (14 meters) long and yet incredibly gentle and curious. I loved floating at the surface being able to look below and see them slowly swim below me. Get some people together and rent a boat for a half day, explore the area, and go ‘shark-seeing’ for a good cause.

Southeast Asia Travel Costs

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

Accommodation – Accommodation in Southeast Asia is really cheap, making it the perfect place to travel if you are on a budget. Hostels are plentiful, as are budget guesthouses and hotels. It’s also very cheap to splash out here if you’re in need of some luxury.

Generally, you can find hostel dorm rooms for as little as $6-8 USD in Cambodia and $3-6 USD in Laos. In Thailand, 4-6-bed dorm rooms are $8-12 USD, while in Vietnam you can expect to pay $5-7 USD. In Indonesia, prices range between $5-10 USD for a 4-6-bed dorm room. Expect to pay at least $15-20 per night for a private room with air conditioning. Free Wi-Fi is standard in most hostels, free breakfast is common, and many hostels even have pools. In more remote areas, hot water isn’t common so make sure to check in advance if that’s an issue for you.

Simple guesthouses or bungalows throughout Southeast Asia generally cost $12-20 USD per night for a basic room with a fan (sometimes air conditioning) and hot water. If you want something nicer that includes a more comfortable bed and a TV, expect to pay $25-35 USD per night.

For backpackers, budgeting around $10 USD per night for accommodation is pretty safe no matter where you go in Southeast Asia. If you’re looking for a higher-end hotel room with more amenities, expect to pay $20-50 USD per night for a room. Anything over that is luxury territory.

Camping is available in certain areas, usually for just a few dollars per night for a basic tent plot without electricity. However, this is about the same price as hostels so it’s not really any cheaper.

Food – While each country’s cuisine varies, overall, Southeast Asian food is aromatic, spicy, and flavorful. Typical spices and herbs include garlic, basil, galangal, cilantro, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, chilies, and fish sauce. No matter what region you’re in, you can expect to find a variety of curries, salads, soups, noodle dishes, and stir-fries.

Rice and noodles are central to Southeast Asian food, while the meat is usually pork, chicken, fish, or seafood, which is everywhere on the islands and coastal areas.

While traveling Southeast Asia, street food is the most popular food and cheapest option. On average, these meals cost $1-5 USD. You find these stalls throughout this region lining most streets and every market. They are ubiquitous in the region. In Singapore, street food (from “hawker stands” as they’re known there) costs around $4-5 USD for a meal. Even if you go into small local restaurants, the price doesn’t increase that much.

Food that costs $2 USD at a street stall generally only costs $4-6 USD at a local restaurant. If you went into a restaurant in Thailand, you’d pay around $3-4 USD for a pad Thai that would have cost $1-2 USD on the street.

In Cambodia, street food is around $1-2 USD, while restaurants charge around $3-5 USD for a dish like amok (a coconut milk dish) or luc lac (pepper gravy beef).

Western meals, including burgers, pizza, and sandwiches usually cost around $7-10 USD. But these generally aren’t that great. If you want something that actually tastes as it does back home, expect to spend at least $10-12 USD for your meal.

While cheap, alcohol can take a bite out of your budget if you’re not careful. Those $1-2 USD beers add up! Wine and cocktails are more expensive, generally around $3-5 USD. A cappuccino is typically around $2 USD. Bottled water is plentiful and costs less than $1 USD.

There’s a growing cutting-edge foodie scene in the region and, if you want to splurge, you can do so on some really good meals. Big cities like Bangkok, KL, and Singapore, all have world-class Michelin star restaurants as well some incredible fusion restaurants.

Since dining out is so cheap in the region, there’s no point in grocery shopping unless you’re looking to get some pre-made salads or fruits. Additionally, a general lack of kitchens in most hostels and hotels makes it difficult to cook even if you wanted to. If you do purchase your own groceries, expect to spend around $25 USD per week for basic groceries like local produce, rice, and some meat (while avoiding expensive imported items like cheese and wine).

Backpacking Southeast Asia Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of $45 USD per day, you can stay in hostel dorms, eat out at local markets and street stalls, limit your drinking, do mostly free activities, minimize paid activities, and use public transportation to get around. You’re not going to be able to splash out but you’ll be able to live the typical backpacker experience without really stressing over expenses.

On a mid-range budget of $85 USD per day, you can stay in budget hotels or private hostel rooms, eat more restaurant meals, do more paid activities like cooking classes, take some taxis, and enjoy a few more drinks. You won’t live large, but you won’t be missing out either.

On an upscale budget of $150 USD or more per day, you can stay in nicer hotels with more amenities, eat out as much as you want, do more paid tours including private tours, hire a driver, fly between destinations, and basically do whatever you want. The sky is the limit with this kind of budget!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in USD.

Southeast Asia Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Backpacking Southeast Asia is cheap. There’s little opportunity to spend a lot of money since everything is already so inexpensive unless you intentionally are trying to splash out on fancy meals and high end hotels. The two reasons why most travelers end up overspending is that they eat a lot of Western food and drink way too much. If you want to save money while traveling in this part of the world, cut down on your drinking and skip the Western food. While country guides have more specific ways to save money, here are some general ways to save money in Southeast Asia:

  • Stay with a local – Accommodation is cheap in Southeast Asia but nothing’s cheaper than free! Use Couchsurfing to stay with locals who have extra beds and couches for free. You’ll also meet great people who can show you around and share their insider tips and advice.
  • Book tours and day trips as a group – You have more negotiation power when you’re with a group of people buying multiple spots or tickets. Traveling alone? Meet a friend at a hostel and see if they want to join the same tour as you. I’ve met some great friends over the years doing this and highly recommend it.
  • Don’t book in advance – Don’t book any tours or activities before you get to your destination. They’ll be much cheaper when you arrive as you’ll be able to negotiate a lower price as you’ll find companies are often offering the same tour and competing. Anything you see online is more expensive than you need to pay!
  • Eat on the street – The street food is the best food. The food is the best and cheapest you’ll find. It’s a great way to try new foods and get to chat with locals as well. This is where locals eat so if you want insight into local culture, good food, and savings, eat the street food. Look for where locals are eating to ensure that it’s safe to eat.
  • Bargain hard – Nothing is ever at face value here. Bargain with sellers as most of the time, the price they’ve quoted is way higher. There’s a haggling culture in the region so play the game and save some money. It’s important not to convert it in your head to your own currency because it will usually sound cheap even though you might still be getting ripped off. You’ll never get the local price, but you might come close!
  • Minimize your drinking – Drinks really add up. Even with cheap drinks, if you’re not aware, you’ll end up spending more money on beer than on food and accommodation. If you want to drink, head to the supermarkets, drink at the hostel, or check out the local happy hours.
  • Pack a water bottle – A water bottle with a purifier comes particularly in handy in Southeast Asia since you can’t usually drink the tap water. Save money and thousands of plastic bottles and get a bottle that can purify the tap water for you. How to Get Around Southeast Asia

A lone person standing on lush, green rice terraces in Southeast Asia on a bright sunny day

Public transportation – Public transportation costs from a few pennies to a few dollars, with Singapore and Malaysia offering the most comprehensive public transportation systems. In Thailand, local buses cost around $0.25 USD per trip, while the Metro and Skytrain in Bangkok cost $0.50-1.50 USD per trip. In Cambodia, a bus ticket in Phnom Penh costs just $0.40 USD per ride.

Major cities generally have subway systems but mostly you’ll be using the bus or shared taxis to get around.

Tuk-tuks (small, shared taxis with no meter) are available around much of the region and require a bit of haggling. They usually have 3-6 seats and generally cost more than public transportation but are faster. To find a reputable driver, ask your accommodation as they usually know someone. Tuk-tuk drivers can often be hired for the day for a discounted rate (this is what a lot of people do to visit the Killing Fields and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, for example).

Taxi – Taxis in the region are generally safe, though it’s not uncommon to have to haggle. Scams to rip you off aren’t uncommon either, so always ask your accommodation to call you a taxi whenever possible so you know you’ll get a reputable company.

In Singapore and Indonesia, taxi drivers do put on the meter. In Bangkok, you can get taxi drivers to use the meter, but if you’re hailing one in a tourist area, he might try to avoid using it. In Vietnam, the meter is sometimes rigged, but if you can get a reputable company like Mai Linh, you won’t have any problems.

Ridesharing – Grab, DiDi, and Gojek are Asia’s answer to Uber. They work the same way: you hire a driver to take you somewhere via the app, and you can pay via the app or in cash. It’s often more affordable than a regular taxi, though drivers are a bit unreliable as the practice is not as widespread here as in other parts of the world.

Just keep in mind that some drivers are driving motorcycles so be sure to double check what kind of vehicle is picking you up if you don’t want to ride on the back of one.

Bus – The easiest and cheapest way to travel around Southeast Asia is by bus. The backpacker trail is so worn that there is a very well-established tourist bus system to take you anywhere. Buses costs vary between $5-25 USD for a 5-6 hour journey. Overnight buses cost $20-35 USD depending on distance (they often have reclining seats so you can get a decent sleep).

You can check ticket prices and book tickets for all the different bus companies across Southeast Asia at 12go.asia.

Train – Train service is limited in the region and not something to really consider when you travel Southeast Asia. You can take a train up and down the coast of Vietnam and there’s some limited scenic rails in Malaysia. Thailand is the only country that has an extensive train system that lets you travel all its regions (and onward to Singapore) from Bangkok.

The train prices in Southeast Asia are determined by distance and class. Night trains with sleeper cars are more expensive than day trains. The night train to Chiang Mai from Bangkok takes twelve hours and costs $27 USD for a sleeper seat. However, that same train during the day is $8-9 USD. In Vietnam, trains run up and down the coast and cost $60 USD from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.

Flying – The cost of flying around Southeast Asia has come down in recent years due to the rise of low-cost airlines. Scoot, Jetstar, and AirAsia are the biggest. Nok Air has a lot of flights within Thailand , and VietJet Air is popular in Vietnam . Lion Air serves Indonesia , but its safety record is really spotty and I personally would not fly them. If you book early, you can save on fares, as most of the airlines offer deeply discounted fare sales all the time, especially Air Asia.

Just make sure that the airport these budget airlines fly into isn’t too far out of your way (transportation from the secondary airport sometimes negates the savings from using the budget airline itself).

Also, keep in mind that you usually must pay to check your baggage on these cheap flights. If you wait to pay for your luggage at the gate, you end up paying almost double. Travel carry-on only to avoid this added cost.

All in all, I only recommend flying if you are pressed for time or find a super cheap deal. Otherwise, stick to the bus.

Hitchhiking – Hitchhiking in Southeast Asia is safe, though popularity of the practice varies by country (it’s more common in Malaysia, but not so much in Cambodia). Dress respectably, smile while making eye contact with drivers, and use a cardboard sign to tell people where you’re headed. Be prepared for long bouts of no pick-ups, especially if you’re traveling through more rural areas. Pack plenty of water and food. Also, make sure the people picking you up understand you’re hitchhiking and not flagging down a taxi.

Hitchwiki is a great resource for hitchhiking tips.

Car rental I don’t recommend renting a car in Southeast Asia. Rental cars are expensive ($40 USD per day or more) and the roads here are in poor shape. I would never drive around the region.

When to Go to Southeast Asia

The best time of year to visit Southeast Asia is from November to April when temperatures are milder (though temperatures vary drastically by region). It may be mild in Thailand in January and hot in Malaysia but in Northern Vietnam, it’s cold! Also, one of the biggest mistakes people make is not taking into account the rainy season. In some cases it won’t make a big difference but definitely does if it’s a beach trip.

In Indonesia, the best time to visit is April to October. Temperatures average 24-30ºC (75-86ºF), and the weather is mostly dry. July to September is the peak holiday season and when you can expect to pay the highest rates. December to February is the rainy season.

In Malaysia, January-March and June-September are the best time to visit, as these months have the lowest average rainfall. It is still hot and humid during this time though. The rainy season is from October to December. Singapore’s climate/weather is much like Malaysia’s.

In Vietnam, the weather varies by region. In Central Vietnam (including Hoi An and Nha Trang), January-May is the best time to visit because it is dry and the temperatures average 21-30°C (70-86°F). June to August is also a decent time to visit. If you want to stick around Hanoi, March to April is great, or October to December (for mildest temperatures). The rainy season is May-September.

Thailand has three seasons: hot, hotter, and hottest. It’s always warm, though the weather is nicest between November and February (which is also peak tourist season). Bangkok is “coolest” and driest during this time (but still averaging a hot 29°C/85°F each day). April and May are the hottest months, and the rainy season is June-October. The gulf islands get pretty rainy from August to December.

The dry season in Cambodia is from November-May and the cool season is from November-February (and when most people visit). Temperatures during this time are still high, but humidity is lower. Laos has the same cool season as Cambodia, with the dry season running from November-April.

In the Philippines, it’s mostly warm all year long with an average daily high of 26°C (80°F). There are rainy and dry seasons and temperatures are hot and dry from March-May and cooler December-February. The best time to visit is between January-April when it’s less humid. Monsoon Season is July-October.

How to Stay Safe in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re traveling solo and even as a solo female traveler. Violent crime is super, duper rare. Petty theft (including bag snatching) is the most common type of crime in Southeast Asia, especially around popular tourist landmarks. Always keep your valuables out of reach on public transportation and in crowds just to be safe. Never leave your valuables unattended while at the beach and always keep a hold of your purse/bag when out and about as bag snatching is common.

That said, outside touristy areas, theft is really rare. Heck, it’s pretty rare in touristy areas too! But a little vigilance goes a long way and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

There are some common scams around that you’ll want to be aware of, such as the motorbike scam. This involves a bike rental company trying to charge you for damage to the bike that you didn’t cause. To avoid this, always take photos of your rental before you leave so you can protect yourself from baseless claims.

Another common scam involves a tuk-tuk driver taking you somewhere you didn’t want to go in hopes you’ll buy something from the shop/restaurant he dropped you off at (he gets a commission if you do). Simply refuse to buy anything and demand to go back to where you were — or find another driver.

For other common travel scams, read this post about major travel scams to avoid in the region .

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though it’s generally a good idea to avoid walking around alone at night just to be safe. It’s always a good idea to carry some extra cash to get home in a taxi if you need to. Additionally, always keep an eye on your drink at the bar and never accept drinks from strangers. Be sensible when it comes to dating while traveling and meeting people in public places. As I’m not a woman, please check out some solo female travel blogs to get the best insight.

Overall, the people who get in trouble here tend to be involved with drugs or sex tourism. Avoid those two things and you should be fine. Keep in mind that it’s not always obvious how old someone is or if they’re a sex worker so be mindful when getting involved in romantic interactions. Also, penalties for drug use in this region are stiff so even if you’re here to party, skip the drugs.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.
