In this animated tale, seaman Lemuel Gulliver (Sam Parker) is the sole survivor of a shipwreck on the distant land of Lilliput, whose people are no bigger than peanuts. Unaware of Gulliver lying on the beach, King Little arranges for the marriage of his daughter, Princess Glory (Jessica Dragonette), to Prince David (Lanny Ross), the son of neighboring King Bombo. Critic Reviews for Gulliver's Travels

Audience reviews for gulliver's travels.

It is everything you would expect from a heroic story. A man named Gulliver is stormed onto new land, where he meets a valley of small Gnome-like people who are in every way, afraid of him. After being passed out for half of the film, he awakes and declares himself to be on their side. This is a nice little story that is definitely worth telling, and the lessons learned are great for kids of all ages. The cartoon work is incredibly drawn and the characters are just as great. "Gulliver's Travels" is not just a great kids film, but it can touch the hearts of adults as well. It's great!

gulliver's travel animated movie

One of the most treasured animated movies of my childhood. I remember my father bought this movie on vhs for me and my sisters and we watched it so many times. The animation is fantastic considering that it was made all the way back in 1939, and I still remember and treasure the characters (especially the ones from Lilleput). This is truly a classic that I will always remember.

I guess I can appreciate it for the time it was made, but it wasn't my cup o' tea and I wouldn't watch it again.

A good, light hearted film.

gulliver's travel animated movie

On 5 Nov 1699, Lemuel Gulliver, an English seaman, is shipwrecked on the shores of Lilliput, a country of peanut sized people, the tallest of whom is no higher than Gulliver's boots. While Gulliver sleeps on the beach, meek King Little of Lilliput betroths his daughter, Princess Glory, to Prince David, the son of Bombo, the bombastic king of neighboring Blefusco. Trouble arises when King Little insists that his favorite song, "Faithful," be sung at the ceremony, while Bombo is equally insistent that his favorite number, "Forever," be the only song sung at the wedding. Their dispute ends when Bombo declares war and storms out just as Gabby, the town crier, bursts into the palace to announce that a giant is sleeping on the beach. At first alarmed, the people of Lilliput work through the night to tie Gulliver up and transport him to their town. When he awakens, however, they soon discover his benevolence after Bombo's armed soldiers flee at the sight of the giant, and Gulliver merely laughs. In celebration, the Lilliputians plan a feast in Gulliver's honor, while Bombo's henchmen, Snoop, Sneak and Switch, plot dastardly schemes against the Lilliputians. When all the Lilliputians are asleep, Gulliver sees the heartbroken Princess Glory during her secret rendezvous with Prince David and determines to help them. He attempts to arbitrate the broken romance by suggesting that both of the disputed songs be combined and sung. Gulliver's attempt seems doomed, though, when Bombo's war ships arrive off the shore of Lilliput and the three spies prepare to shoot the giant. Seeing the spies aiming the gun at Gulliver, Prince David gallops to the giant's rescue, but plunges over the cliff as he deflects the shot. David's fall brings Bombo to his senses, and the lovers are united to the combined harmony of "Faith" and "Forever" while Gulliver sails off into the sunset in a small boat made for him by the Lilliputians.

Gulliver's Travels (1939)

An early plan was to have the role of Gulliver written for Popeye.

The character of Gulliver was "rotoscoped" - a method devised by the Fleischers where the drawing was achieved by tracing over the movements of a live actor.

The first animated feature from a studio other that Disney.

In the opening sequence of the film, the credits are superimposed over a three-dimensional sailing ship. The song "Faithful Forever" is not listed in the onscreen credits, but is sung in the film. According to a news item in Motion Picture Daily , the success of Walt Disney's 1937 film Snow White motivated the Fleischer Studios to produce this animated feature at a budget of $700,000. This was Max Fleischer's first feature-length-Technicolor animated feature. It only used one episode from the Jonathan Swift book. Modern sources note that the figure of "Gulliver" was rotoscoped throughout the entire film. The movements of actor Sam Parker were traced from live action film to become the figure of "Gulliver." The rest of the characters were represented through animation. Modern sources also add that 500,000 celluloids and twelve tons of paint were used for the 115,700 composite scenes in the film. Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin's song "Faithful Forever" and Victor Young's original score were nominated for Academy Awards.        Several live action films were based on the Swift novel. In 1960, Columbia produced The 3 Worlds of Gulliver , directed by Jack Sher and starring Kerwin Matthews, and in 1977, EMI produced a British-Belgium co-production titled Gulliver's Travels , starring Richard Harris and directed by Peter Hunt. An animated IMAX version of Swift's story, directed by Ian Pearson and Scott Speirs, completed production in late 2003 but, as of spring 2005, it was not scheduled for release.

After the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), the world of animation and cinema changed drastically. Walt Disney and his team of animators were able to prove to Hollywood that animation didn’t have to be restricted to short stories of six or seven minutes and that it could explore several different genres and moods different from comedy, exploiting its dramatic possibilities. For these reasons, it’s rightfully considered one of the most important films ever made. However, something that isn’t often mentioned is the vast number of imitators that showed up over the years. Several different American features have tried to imitate Snow White and, in general, the “Disney style”, in an (often futile) attempt to recreate the…

Gulliver's Travels (1939) - The Fleischer Studios finally get to make a feature length cartoon! The only other studio that made a full-length animation movie in the 1930s was Disney with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) . The two studios had been battling it out since the 1920s, both innovative in their own special way creating wonderful short films that still live on. Disney went on to become legendary with Snow White, the Fleischers went on to go bankrupt with Gulliver.

Where Gulliver's Travels fail is that they try to be too much like Disney. The Fleischers with Popeye, Betty Boop and other cartoons where known their wackiness, immensely creative gags and many of their cartoons even had special…

The 1937 release of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs changed everything for animated film. It proved that animated feature films could be a success and, as a result, several different studios began to produce their own animated features. Gulliver's Travels was the first animated feature from Fleischer Studios. I wasn't even aware of this film's existence until I came across it on Youtube and decided to give it a watch. While it not a perfect film, Gilliver's Travels is still a fairly enjoyable watch.

The film follows Lemuel Gulliver who washes ashore on Lilliput and attempts to prevent a war between that tiny kingdom and its equally miniscule rival, Blefiscu. Gulliver must also smooth the way for the…

A little choppy here and there in terms of editing, animation, and unfortunately storytelling too. Also Gulliver is kinda terrifying, the rotoscoping worked a little too well.  But despite all its flaws I still really enjoyed this. It’s really charming and funny and has great animation overall. It’s no Snow White but it doesn’t have to be. It may get bumped down to only being the second animated movie ever made but I think it still has its charm and is still really fun.

I've been watching a ton of old Fleischer cartoons recently, because we're 12 months into lockdown and my brain craves easily digestible animated fun for sustenance. I think what Fleischer Studios were doing in the 30's and 40's acted almost like a gateway between those early Disney shorts/features and the Hanna Barbera cartoons of the 50's. Lavish colour palettes, exaggerated character poses, big built up musical sequences. Gulliver's Travels is one of the only feature length films that the Fleischer brothers ever produced; and I think for a simple reason. The animation is beautiful, the story is simple, but it is simply way too long to hold attention. Based on Jonathan Swift's novel of the same name, this film is…

Fleischer Classics Featuring Gulliver's Travels Plus Eight Fantastic Cartoons From the Golden Age of Animation Blu-ray / DVD

Product Description

Gulliver's Travels is based on Jonathan Swift's classic story about Lemuel Gulliver, a sailor shipwrecked in Lilliput, the land of tiny people. The Fleischer studio produced the film in 1939. Hundreds of artists worked on the production, which was considered to be a landmark in the art of animation; being only the second full-length color animated feature ever produced. This engaging family film features the singing talents of Jessica Dragonette (Princess Glory) and Lanny Ross (Prince David) in a tale of 18th century romance and adventure in which Gulliver helps to prevent war between the Kingdoms of Lilliput and Blefuscu. Fine family entertainment that has stood the test of time.
