this boat has been a bane for…

The new safari is…, i purchased an innova safari….

I purchased an Innova Safari 3 M in 2010. It is a very solid and well made product. The following are my comments. 1. It is 14 kg so far too heavy to be accepted in an airline overhead locker despite the Innova claim. 2. To backpack it is possible, but consider that you must also carry in the pump, the carry bag and the paddle so the real weight will be closer to 18 kg. 3. I have had mine for around 7 or 8 years now, used it about 20 to 30 times. Always washed in clean water after use and stored in a dry room out of sun. My kayak has now come apart on all four seams at the bow and stern (2 bow, 2 stern) an these seams need complete re-gluing. These are not seams on the inflated chambers but more to provide shape to the boat. 4. The new Safari is longer at 3.3 meters and also wider. The extra length for the new model is a good change for larger paddlers. 5. Do remember that it is very easy to be one or two kilometres offshore in an inflatable to avoid reefs etc. This is a long way to swim if by chance one of the inflated chambers deflates! Consider this if you are choosing an inflatable over a plastic or fibreglass kayak. ALWAYS WEAR A LIVE VEST.

First off, let me say that…

First off, let me say that the boat I am reviewing is the older model Safari. The new model, which I believe came out in 2017 , is longer, wider, and more stable from what I understand. The Safari is well made and will last a long time. For lakes and slow moving rivers it is suitable for anyone, but for swift water I found it to be overly tippy. I am an intermediate hard shell paddler and got this boat to do a Class 3 and 4 river (Ocoee River in Tennesssee). I never could get comfortable in it, and flipped over way too often. Although technically it can be rolled, I could never do it. Because it's so tippy, it's also hard to re-enter from the water. I liked the boat fine for lakes and slower moving rivers, but if you want to do big water, it is challenging, to say the least. For a laugh I let a much better paddler try it out once, and he flipped over in a matter of seconds. He felt that he could eventually get used to it, but, like I say, it is challenging in big water even for good paddlers. If you get one, I would recommend making sure you get the latest, larger, model.

I took the 2nd generation Innova Safari (aka Gumotex Safari in Europe) down the Mekong in Laos and white water trips in Thailand. It was abit small but the new Safari 330 is bigger so i def will be getting it too!

This thing is amazing. Class III rapids are no problem, the pack it comes with is super durable and can carry some extra gear if packed properly. Works fine to hike with - just needs a chest strap, maybe some padding if hiking longer.

The negative review I pointed out clearly does not understand that air expands when it gets hot -and the instructions clearly state to both UV protect the exterior and keep it out of the sun when out of the water.

Based on the original Safari, the new 330 is both longer and wider to give a more stable platform and higher carrying capacity meaning the Safari 330 can now easily cope with paddlers up to 100kg and still carry gear on top. The hull is made from extremely tough and quick drying Nitrilon which allows the Safari to be paddled safely in white water (up to grade 3) , especially as it also comes equipped with thigh straps for more precise control and a self draining hull. There is also a tracking fin on the hull to aid straight line paddling and gear loops to keep baggage secure. All these features ensure that the Safari can be paddled with ease in a wide variety of situations on estuary, river, lake or in the surf zone! Best of all it can be packed down into the included 70L drybag and slung on your back – so now there is nowhere that you can’t take your kayak.

New Safari 330 XL and Halibut from Gumotex

For 2016 Gumotex have a new model of the self-bailing white-water/surf Safari called  330 or 330 XL. According to the stats the new boat is 26cm or ten inches longer than the regular Safari and now 80cm- or no less than three inches wider, which means buoyancy is up 30% to a rated 130kg. Weight is down 500g too to 12kg.

I had the original pre-2003 Safari  (left and right) – my very first IK and a very tippy boat for which I was too heavy and perhaps just too big. Part of the reason for tippiness is you’re sat high because a self-bailer needs a thick floor to put the your butt above the water level swilling around the draining holes in the floor. If that boat is also narrow and you’re an over-fed newb, then you both sit in water and have trouble keeping upright. Post 2003 Safaris were said to be much less tippy.

The new 330 retains the all-important thigh straps but will be a more stable, user-friendly IK that’s still suited to rapids and surf without the need for decks (as on the Framura or Swings ) or for frequent bank-side visits to drain it (right). But you get the horrible, old-school Gumotex footrest and a seat with no back support. I’d glue on some hull-top patches for a proper backrest like on my Seawave or Grabner , and a footrest tube too. The claimed specs are: 330cm long; 80cm wide; 12kg; max load 130kg and 3psi pressure with a PRV in the floor. The preceding Safari was: 304 x 72cm; 12.5kg; max load 100kg and runs the same pressure and PRV.

Lurking deep in the weeds we find Gumo’s other new IK, a fishing kayak called the Halibut . I do like a tasty halibut fried in butter and lemon, and this well-equipped trawler is high-seated, heavy but reassuringly wide (3.75m long, 96cm wide, 21kg).

It also comes with a floor plate for standing, but energetic casting might take some skill to pull off. At €999 it’s quite pricey too, but there are probably more fishing kayakers out there (mostly in hardshell SoTs) than the rest of us put together.

The Gumotex Safari is a very sporty inflatable kayak with a self bailing hull designed for lower grade whitewater and small wave surfing. It also features storage for day trips down the river or along the coast. The Gumotex Safari is all about the fun!

Gumotex kayaks are known for their tough construction and the Safari is no different. The hull is designed for easy maneovring in white-water and surf, the seat features integrated thigh straps to aid with control and to help stop you falling out when it gets rough. The Safari can also be used for day touring when you fancy ssomething a little more sedate. The comfortable seat and dual storage areas allow you to paddle all day or even stay away overnight if you are feeling more adventurous.

Gumotex inflatables are made of their patented material NITRILON® Material composition: high strength PES fibre with an outer layer of synthetic rubber and inner layer of a mixture based on natural rubber. The material is highly resistant to abrasion, aging and UV.

Gumotex safari test / review.

Das Gumotex Safari * ist ein Allrounder im Luftbootbereich, das sowohl im Wildwasser als auch für mehrtägige Gepäcktouren gut einsetzbar ist. Ich besitze das Gumotex Safari seit Mai 2021 und bin mit dem Boot viele Touren gepaddelt. Die längste Paddeltour war am Tanaro , ein Fluss, bei dem sich Wildwasser und Zahmwasser abwechselt. Hier bin ich 155 km in 5 Tagen gepaddelt, wobei ich die komplette Ausrüstung für eine mehrtägige Tour im Boot dabei hatte. Seit dieser Tour bin ich überzeugt, dass das Safari ein solider Allrounder ist.

Finne am Safari

Das Gumotex Safari ist als offenes Wildwasserboot konstruiert. Wasser, das man schöpft, läuft durch Lenzlöcher im Boden wieder ab. Im Wildwasser kann das Safari durch ein sportliches Fahrverhalten, einer sehr guten Wendigkeit und einer hohen Kippsicherheit punkten. Trotz der Länge von 3,3 m lässt sich das Boot im Wildwasser präzise fahren.

Für das Paddeln im Wildwasser sind im Lieferumfang Schenkelgurte enthalten, die den Kontakt zum Boot deutlich verbessern. Ich habe diese Gurte regelmäßig auf Touren im Einsatz. Bevor man sich die Schenkelgurte auf einer Tour anlegt, sollte man eine Testkenterung in kontrollierter Umgebung durchführen. So stellt man sicher, dass man im Ernstfall auch problemlos aus den Gurten raus kommt. Im Prinzip muss man nur die Füße durchstrecken, sodass man aus den Schenkelgurten rutscht. Theoretisch sollte man mit den Schenkelgurten das Boot rollen können, was ich aber nicht schaffe. Das einzige Luftboot, das ich rollen kann, ist das Grabner Hype . Da das Boot offen ist und eine Lenzung hat, kann man im Fall einer Kenterung vom Wasser aus wieder einsteigen. Hierfür ist schon etwas Kraft erforderlich, aber bei mehreren Tests am Weiher hab ich es gut hinbekommen.

Das Safari bietet aber nicht nur im Wildwasser eine gute Performance, sondern kann auch im Zahmwasser mit einer für ein Luftboot soliden Geschwindigkeit punkten. Bei mehreren Tests am Weiher konnte ich bei entspanntem Paddeln über einige Kilometer im Schnitt 5,5 km/h erreichen. Bei Verwendung der Finne bin ich auf 5,3 km/h gekommen.

Die Finne ist im Zahmwasser empfehlenswert, da der Geradeauslauf ansonsten dürftig ist. Man kann das Boot zwar auch ohne Finne geradeaus paddeln, doch ein Paddelstop führt zu einer sofortigen Drehung, was mit einer Finne deutlich verbessert wird. Im Wildwasser darf die Finne aber nicht verwendet werden, da man so leichter am Flussuntergrund hängen bleibt und kentert.

Da das Boot offen ist, ist es auch sehr gut auf Kleinflüssen einsetzbar, da man bei möglichen Hindernissen sehr schnell aus dem Boot kommt. Einzig von der Länge könnte es für den Einsatz auf Kleinflüssen etwas kürzer sein, aber dies würde das Fahrverhalten auf Großgewässern negativ beeinflussen.

Sitz & Komfort

Das Gumotex Safari ist ein sehr bequemes Luftboot. Beim Sitz lassen sich die Sitzfläche und die Rückenlehne getrennt aufpumpen. Dies ist sehr gut, da man so für den Einsatz in wilderen Gewässern etwas tiefer sitzen kann, ohne Luft aus der Lehne abzulassen. Den Sitz selbst finde ich sehr angenehm. Einzig bei voll aufgepumpter Lehne wird es auf lange Sicht unbequem. Ich pumpe deswegen die Lehne nie komplett auf, sodass diese etwas weicher ist und so kann ich ohne Probleme 10 h oder mehr im Boot verbringen. Der Ein- und Ausstieg ist schnell und problemlos möglich, da das Boot offen ist.

Sitz und Schenkelgurte

Ich bin 1,75 m groß und 70 kg schwer und bringe im Safari problemlos mein Gepäck für eine mehrtägige Tour unter. Da das Safari ein Boot ohne Verdeck ist, muss man seine Ausrüstung sorgfältig befestigen, dass sie im Falle einer Kenterung nicht verloren geht. Bei meiner Körpergröße kann ich vorne und hinten eine Grabner Outside Tasche * befestigen, die pro Tasche 37 Liter fasst.

Zwischen Sitz und der Hecktasche passt auch noch problemlos ein Kühlrucks ack * , den ich mit Expandern * befestige. Damit bringe ich bereits einiges an Gepäck unter. Zusätzlich verwende ich die Spanngummis auf dem Heck, um je nach Bedarf weitere Ausrüstung zu befestigen. Hier sollte immer darauf geachtet werden, dass schwere Gegenstände nahe am Boden angebracht werden und man nur mit leichten Gegenständen in die Höhe baut, um den Schwerpunkt so niedrig wie möglich zu halten, damit das Boot nicht unnötig kippelig wird. Wichtig ist auch, dass man sein Gepäck sauber verzurrt, damit man im Fall einer Kenterung sich nicht am Gepäck verheddert.

Die hintere Outside Tasche lässt sich gut am Griff anbringen und die Spanngurte sorgen dafür, dass die Tasche im Fall einer Kenterung nicht raushängt. Die Outside Tasche vorne lässt sich sicher am Griff und an den beiden Halterungen für die Schenkelgurte befestigen. Habe ich vorne eine Tasche befestigt, ersetzt mir diese auch die Fußstütze. Benedict ist 1,82 m groß und hat das Boot am Ombrone genau in dieser Konfiguration gepaddelt. Vom Platz her war es für ihn nach eigener Aussage super. Größere Paddler müssen testen, ob sie die Outside Tasche nicht zu sehr einschränkt. Evtl. kann man auch kleiner Packsäcke * als Alternative verwenden. Unter dem Sitz habe ich noch einen D-Ring * geklebt *, um einen 10 Liter Wassersack * dort und an der Halterung für die Fußstütze zu befestigen. Bis auf den D-Ring verwende ich das Safari im ursprünglichen Zustand.

Safari von unten mit Lenzung

Das Safari bietet ordentlich Platz für Gepäck, trotzdem gibt es Boote wie das Gumotex Seawave * oder das Grabner Escape, in denen man deutlich mehr unterbringt. Meine Ausrüstung ist deshalb auf Platz und Gewicht optimiert. Trotzdem habe ich auch meine Filmausrüstung dabei, bestehend aus drei bis vier Kameras, die der Otto-Normalpaddler nicht mit führt und somit zusätzlichen Platz offenlässt.

Das Safari hat eine Zuladung von 130 kg. Die Zuladungsgrenze beim Safari ist kritischer als bei anderen Booten, da durch die Lenzung nicht nur das Wasser ablaufen kann, sondern bei starker Beladung auch ins Boot eindringen kann. Ich habe bei mehrtägigen Touren meist so um die 40 kg Gepäck dabei und habe mit meinem Körpergewicht keine Probleme.

Ein Test am Weiher hat gezeigt, dass mit vollem Tourengepäck (40 kg), ab einem Körpergewicht von 90 kg der Wassereintritt langsam unangenehm wird und ab 100 kg das Wasser bereits auf den Sitz läuft. Dies ist der größte Nachteil am Safari, da es im Prinzip nur für Personen unter 90 kg (Gewicht ohne Klamotten) uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen ist. Wiegt man über 90 kg, sollte man dies unbedingt vor dem Kauf testen, ob man mit dem Wassereintritt noch zurechtkommt oder nicht. Diese Grenze von 90 kg ist etwas lockerer mit weniger Gepäck. Ein Paddler, den ich an der Isar mit dem Safari getroffen habe, hat mir erzählt, dass er mit 98 kg Körpergewicht und Tagestouren Gepäck kein Problem mit dem Wassereintritt hat.

Langlebigkeit

Das Safari ist aus dem bewährten und sehr robusten Nitrilon Material und entsprechend sehr langlebig. Mein Gumotex Helios ist aus demselben Material und ist bereits über 10 Jahre alt. Ich bin mit dem Helios circa 4000 km gepaddelt und habe es geschunden, so gut ich konnte, aber es hat bisher kein Loch. Passiert es doch mal, dass man sich ein Loch ins Boot reißt, so kann man dieses einfach reparieren. Nach 10 Jahren wurde beim Helios jetzt aber die Naht der rechten Seitenluftkammer im Sitzbereich undicht. Bezüglich Langlebigkeit, vor allem beim Thema Dichtigkeit von Luftkammern bei einem hohen Alter (Ordnung 10 bis 20 Jahre), sehe ich einzig die Firma Grabner vor Gumotex, aber das bezahlt man auch mit einem höheren Preis. Das Safari hat inzwischen an die 500 km gemeistert und unzählige Zerstörungsversuche überlebt. Das heftigste Ereignis war am Ombrone als wir es durch einen Baum gejagt haben. Wenn man sich die Bilder ansieht, mag man es vielleicht nicht glauben, aber das Boot hat diesen Vorfall komplett unbeschädigt überstanden und wir konnten die Tour einfach fortsetzen.

Hinweis: Die hier gelisteten Punkte gelten relativ für Luftboote. Ein Feststoffboot kann zum Beispiel deutlich schneller sein als ein Luftboot, das bei der Kategorie Geschwindigkeit die vollen 5 Punkte hat.

Zusammenfassung:

Dürfte ich nur ein Boot besitzen, wäre es definitiv das Safari, da es unglaublich vielseitig einsetzbar ist. Trotzdem ist es nicht für jeden das richtige Boot. Sucht man ein Boot mit ähnlichem Einsatzbereich, wiegt aber über 90 kg, so empfiehlt sich als Alternative das Gumotex Swing 1 . Der Nachteil vom Swing ist aber, dass es weniger sportlich ist und schlechter im Wildwasser performt. Eine weitere Alternative mit ähnlichem Einsatzbereich ist das Gumotex Rush 1 , das aber noch etwas unsportlicher als das Swing 1 ist, dafür aber besser im Zahmwasser performt. Des Weiteren ist das Verdeck am Rush komplett wasserdicht und somit ist es fürs wuchtige Wildwasser besser geeignet als das Swing. Fährt man kein oder nur leichtes Wildwasser, empfiehlt sich ein Boot, das den Fokus auf den Zahmwassereinsatz legt. Hier würde sich das Gumotex Seawave * oder das Grabner Escape 1 anbieten, wobei aufgrund der Länge beide Boote eher weniger für Kleinflüsse geeignet sind. Liegt der Einsatzbereich ausschließlich in Tagestouren mit Fokus aufs Wildwasser, so ist das Grabner Hype das bessere Boot, da es noch deutlich sportlicher ist und viel näher an ein PE Wildwasserboot kommt als das Safari.
