Related tags, guitar tales: nigeria’s helen ibe is winning the hearts of her guitar community.

In the latest instalment of his column meeting some of the most exciting new faces in African guitar, Deo Salvator talks to Lagos-born Helen Ibe.

From content creation to outsmarting social media algorithms, it’s quite a headache to keep sane while balancing such a duality of being a YouTuber and a guitar player today. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, guitarist and YouTuber Helen Ibe is doing just that.

  • READ MORE: The intriguing history of Steinberger guitars

As a guitarist, I understand the inarticulable feelings behind such a process of combining both. But again, I believe the love the guitar community has been showing her confirms that it’s not just dealing with binaries but also through being the amazing guitar player that she is.

Living her whole life in Nigeria, it was church that made Helen start playing her Les Paul at just 16 years-of-age. “I was just packing through a music shop one day and my eye was caught because of its bossed colour. Luckily, it was very cheap but not really an actual Les Paul. It was like a Chinese knock-off, but it is my best guitar and I have quite a number of different memories attached to it. It is my first guitar, I don’t want to let it go. It’s just like a reminder of where I started from.

“You know how church musicians are,” Ibe explains. “They always believe when it is the next big thing. My pastor was like ‘Every church member has to know how to play an instrument.’ When I saw a guitar, its shape, the way it blew, I knew that it was what I wanted to play. The church brought in people to teach us for three months, and the rest I learned by myself through YouTube, reading and from others. So that’s how I started.”

Gear & career

“Apart from church music, I started listening and exploring other kinds of music like jazz and blues. I remember listening to blues, and it was different from what I was used to,” Ibe admits. “It was exciting and then I started getting into smooth jazz, listening to players like Norman Brown and George Benson etc. It really opened my mind to how I could create my own style.

“A lot of people don’t know that I was actually an acoustic player before going electric. I used acoustic guitar at the start, because it was the cheapest for me to begin with. But now, I can’t even count how many guitars I have! Maybe 12 if I recall? My favourite one [of the acoustics] is my Alvarez Yairi, with its clean and precise tone. There’s this chime about it that I like.”

Ibe has also noted that the music industry can be challenging due to it being a male dominated industry. “The fact of being a woman you may face discrimination, or think that you are not good enough, and wonder if you should really be doing that. But as the world is changing, no matter your gender, we can all be equal.

“Women can bring something on the table as well as men, but it requires a lot of courage. When your fans actually enjoy what you are doing, it keeps you going and that’s really what drives me.”

Helen Ibe

Balancing duality

Helen’s goal is simply to make good music. Something that anybody can relate to and enjoy. She believes that music is a universal language, something that all of us, the world over, can connect with.

It didn’t take her long to blow up on YouTube. She started in 2019 and by January of 2020 many of her videos had already gone viral. “I think that if you’re producing good content, and trying not to be like anybody else, people will find you and know they can resonate with your music. It makes me happy, and it makes me fight for my freedom” she says.

“Social media is a great way to get your music out, especially to us musicians. Anybody in the world can collaborate with you, contact you and know what you are up to! Because of creating YouTube content, I have been able to reach out to people that I didn’t even think I’d be able to collaborate with. And of course, making money from AdSense, which I would have not done on my own.

“If Covid taught us something, it taught us how to share or boost our work,” Ibe says. “When it started, the whole music industry was cut off, especially live music. So how were musicians making money? Some were creating and doing online content, from brand collaboration and sponsored videos and just people reaching out to you to record their songs. And all of that just forms your brand.

“When I play, someone somewhere is happy and smiling because of me. And when I read comments, it makes me feel good and fulfilled. This is actually what I am supposed to do,” she enthuses.

Helen has an upcoming extended player for just acoustic guitar and a full-length album of electric guitar work that she’s releasing soon, but in the meantime keep abreast of her recent EP Clear Skies (Love Covers)  and the soundscapes she’s painting over her youtube channel.

In Conversation with Helen Ibe: Philanthropy, Creativity, and Individuality

As seen in Guitar Girl Magazine Issue 15 – Spring 2021 – Electrified!

H elen Ibe is a Nigerian guitarist, performer, songwriter, guitar teacher, and humanitarian. She has established herself as one of Nigeria’s top classical guitarists and regularly performs at Lagos venues. She writes original songs, sits in with other performers, and has her own online guitar teaching platform.

As a philanthropist, she’s been working through the Helen Ibe Hope outreach programs and recently started an online organization to help widows deal with depression. She uses her music as a tool to connect and promote healing. We recently caught up with Ibe to learn more about her background, music, and what she has coming up for the new year.

helen ibe tour

Can you tell me more about what you offer? Do you provide lessons online only? Are there any specific styles or levels you teach? Yes, I do teach guitar, and I love to teach! My focus is mostly on beginners and intermediates. I also offer private lessons, but that usually has limited slots. I’m currently working on my beginner guitar course; I have tried to study the things that I think beginners struggle with and the tools that would help them start their journey right. I’m trying hard to put out content that would benefit people that want to start their guitar-playing journey. I also have free lessons on my YouTube channel.

As a teacher, what tips would you give students working on their guitar skills? There is always so much to learn! I think it is important to take it one step at a time rather than overwhelm yourself trying to learn everything at once. Start things slowly and build up speed, Do not underestimate the importance of consistency. Practice! It builds your confidence.

I see you describe yourself as a humanitarian. What causes do you feel most strongly about? My father died when I was a young child; it was a very tough time for me, my siblings, and my mom. I feel very strongly pulled to fatherless children, orphans, and widows. When the man of the home passes away, there is a void and destabilization in the family, most times financially. That is why a big part of my heart always goes towards helping this cause. I have been there; I’ve experienced it firsthand, and trust me, it is not a good place.

In your bio, you describe your live performances as being unique. What elements do you add that sets them apart? My live performance is quite different from performing in front of my camera or performing at home. When you perform live, you’re more expressive (after overcoming the stage-fright) because you are inspired by the audience’s energy. When they resonate with the music, it excites me knowing how happy I’m making people (which is one of the big reasons why I make music). I like to make my live performances as engaging as possible and make it a win-win situation by making myself happy as much as I’m making my audience happy. I think a lot of musicians also feel this way; you want your live performance to be an unforgettable experience for your audience.

helen ibe tour

Your bio states you are also a commercial model. We all know fashion and music go hand in hand. How do you feel your work as a model has influenced or helped your music career? Yes, I do model sometimes, face modeling especially. It is such a fun thing for me. I think fashion and music have always gone hand in hand because they represent expression, creativity, and individuality and showcases your uniqueness—core elements that I try to include in my creative process.

What’s coming up for Helen Ibe? New music? Any performances planned post-COVID?

Besides putting out more video content on YouTube and other social platforms, I am working on putting out some cool singles this year and working on completing my beginner’s course. I’m really excited about all the great things this year has to offer. I am looking forward to playing and going to watch live shows when we can do that again in full.

HELEN IBE MUSIC

“Meet Helen Ibe, Nigeria’s finest female professional guitarist, writer and performing artist. A commercial model and passionate Humanitarian. You could once again be forgiven to think we were talking about someone in their 70’s. But at such a young age, Helen has managed to rack up a résumé and portfolio that reads like one belonging to a legendary septuagenarian.

It would once again be foolhardy to think she won’t achieve legendary status at her current career trajectory.”

Helen Ibe advances to semifinals of the Martin No Limits Challenge

Ibe's none-more-funky acoustic take on David Bowie's Fame beat out Ruben Wan's impressive interpretation of Destiny's Child's Say My Name

Helen Ibe plays an offset Martin SC acoustic guitar

This week, Martin – in partnership with Guitar World – kicked off the first round of its No Limits Challenge competition .

The first quarterfinal round of the competition – which sees eight guitarists face off against one another, covering tunes you wouldn't normally associate with an acoustic using a Martin SC model – saw Ruben Wan and Helen Ibe take on a pair of funk/R&B classics.

Wan put an acoustic spin on Destiny's Child's  Say My Name , while Ibe took a swing at David Bowie's  Fame .

We asked Guitar World 's readers – with the help of GW 's editors – to weigh in, and vote for their favorite of the two covers. Both were fantastic, but in the end, Helen Ibe's ultra-funky take on Fame won the day, and advanced her to the semifinal round.

Each round of the competition revolves around two guitarists covering classics of a certain genre. The other three quarterfinals are '80s rock, '90s rock and classic rock-themed, respectively. There will be two genre-based face-offs in the semifinals, and the winners of those, of course, will advance to the finals.

Be sure to check back on Monday to watch the next quarterfinal match-up, which will see RJ Ronquillo and Colin Scott tackle a pair of classic rock standards.

‘Forbidden Broadway’ Scraps Summer Broadway Run, Citing Crowded Season

The parody show was scheduled to begin performances in July at the Helen Hayes Theater.

In a sign that there are not enough investors and ticket buyers to sustain all of the Broadway shows now onstage and in the works, the producers of “Forbidden Broadway” said Friday that they were canceling a planned summer run.

The scrapped production, “ Forbidden Broadway on Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song ,” was announced in February and was to be the first Broadway venture for the satirical revue, which has been performed periodically since 1982, mostly Off Broadway but also on tour. The show, consisting of comedic sketches that parody Broadway hits (and misses), has been frequently rewritten to remain reasonably timely and topical; the Broadway run was to feature a number of Sondheim spoofs, reflecting the heightened interest in his work since his death.

In a statement, the producers, Ryan Bogner, Victoria Lang and Tracey Stroock McFarland , called the move a postponement, and cited the volume of offerings on Broadway — there are currently 36 shows running, 12 of which opened in a nine-day stretch before the Tony-eligibility season ended Thursday night.

“The Broadway landscape is enormously crowded at this moment,” the producers’ statement said, “and while we adore Forbidden Broadway, we are disappointed that the show will not open at the Hayes on Broadway this summer.”

The show, written by Gerard Alessandrini, was to begin previews July 15 and to open Aug. 5 at the Helen Hayes Theater, and was to be capitalized for $3.2 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is not clear if the producers had successfully raised all that money, and ticket sales, which began earlier this month, had been slow.

“Without getting into the details of the financials or sales, it is self evident by looking at the current offerings on Broadway and their sales that in this incredibly crowded environment without recent precedent, the title would not have been served by launching at this time,” the producers said in a written answer to questions about the show’s economics.

This is the second show to cancel a Broadway production this year; in February, the producers of a planned run of Rob Madge’s “My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?)” announced that they were postponing that production less than three weeks before previews were to begin.

As for Madge, the performer is planning to take “My Son’s a Queer” back to the Edinburgh Fringe, this summer . But first, next month Madge is planning a show in London, reflecting on the Broadway disappointment. The title, of course, is “ Regards to Broadway .”
