Google Flights: How to use the Explore feature to find the best deals

P lanning a trip can be fun. It can also be frustrating, even when using the best travel apps . This is particularly true when finding flights. Researching flights can give you ideas. However, not finding a suitable flight can take the wind out of your sails. Google's free travel tools have everything you need for your trip. Google Travel has something for everyone, but if you're looking for a spontaneous adventure, Google's Explore feature is your best bet.

We look at what Google Travel is before focusing on how to get the most out of Explore. The next time you catch the travel bug, whip out your Chromebook or smartphone and plan your trip in minutes.

How to plan a road trip with an electric vehicle

Traveling with google.

Google has a habit of quietly launching game-changing tools. Google Travel launched in 2019 as the upgraded version of Google Trips. It's a search engine for flights, hotels, holiday rentals, and sightseeing destinations. It also allows you to book trips without leaving the Google Travel website. Other travel booking sites fall short of the variety and user-friendliness that Google offers.

What is Google Explore?

The Explore feature is a tool within Google Travel that helps you find flights and hotels no matter how exact or flexible your travel arrangements need to be. For example, you can shop for trips from your local airport to anywhere in the world next June. Or, you could book flights to a specific destination for a conference that's happening on a particular date.

Google Explore is often associated with flights, but you can book hotels, reserve holiday rentals, and plan sightseeing visits.

How to use Google Explore

When Google Travel was Google Trips, it was only accessible via a mobile app. Today, you'll only find Google Travel tools via your web browser. Google Travel is optimized for desktop, mobile, and tablet. The screenshots below are taken from an Android mobile device, but the basic instructions work on any device.

Basic Navigation

Navigate to Google Travel's Explore tool in your web browser on a mobile or desktop. The Explore homepage displays the basic search options. These are numbered in the screenshot and described below.

  • Select either Round-trip or One-way . Close
  • Select the number of travelers.
  • Select which class of flight you are looking for.
  • Select your departure city. If you are logged in to your Google account, the Where From field is populated with the closest city with an airport.
  • Select your arrival city.
  • Use the Date selection tool to set the search to display specific dates or dates within a given range. For example, set the search to show all one-week trips within the next six months. Close
  • Set up Filters.

Using filters to narrow your search

After entering your basic search information, such as date and number of travelers, you'll end up with a lot of search results. Unless you have an endless budget and no limits on where you want to go, narrow your search. Here's a rundown of your filtering options.

  • Stops : Consider flights with additional stops to bring down the price of a trip.
  • Travel Mode : If you're happy to drive as well as fly, select All .
  • Interest : There's a difference between a beach vacation and a skiing trip. Here's where you pick your preference.
  • Price : Set your budget. This is the price for flights, not the whole trip.
  • Airlines : Select what airline alliances you want to include in the search. These alliances are groups of specific airlines.
  • Duration : This is the flight duration as opposed to the length of your trip.
  • Bags : This is automatically set to zero Close

Browsing your options

After setting your preferences, Google Explore shows your options. You can switch between the list and the map view on a mobile device. Both of these views are always visible on a desktop.

In the map view, scroll out to see more destinations. This is limited by the destination you set. Leave this field blank to see what's possible on your budget. Zoom out to see more options.

If you want to change your filters while in map view on your mobile, pull the menu down using the arrow button.

Booking your trip

  • Select the destination you want to book.
  • Scroll down to see the available flight and hotel options, along with additional helpful info. Close
  • Use the Price Graph and Dates tools to see if cheaper options are available around your travel dates. Close
  • Select the flight or hotel you want to book. You may be able to pay through Google, or you may be redirected to the vendor's site.
  • If you're not ready to book, select the Track Prices option to keep updated on price fluctuations for your trip.

Are all flights and hotels available with Google Travel?

The short answer is no.

Airlines, hotels, and travel agencies must partner with Google to list their available flights and rooms. Google works with over 300 travel partners, including travel agencies, aggregators, and airlines. We can expect to see the number of flights available increase. That's because there is pressure on providers to list on Google to compete.

Google Travel gives an excellent view of available flights and hotels. Plus, booking without leaving Google or dealing with multiple providers is appealing.

Exploration made easy

Like many of Google's free services, it's easy to use and works brilliantly. This can't be said for every digital flight or trip booking tool. If you want to book a trip, Google Travel's Explore feature gives you lots to think about. More than that, exploring the possibilities in Google Travel is a fantastic way to fire the imagination.

Google Travel doesn't list every available flight and hotel. After finding your ideal, affordable trip using Explore, shop around to see if you can find a better price. Then, check out our tips on how to use Google services to make trip planning easier .

Ratings and Reviews

11K Ratings

I don’t even give ratings ever. This is literally my first time giving a review on something in years. I find this app extremely helpful, FULL of information! fun, informative and I don’t know how many times I was just in awe with moments like, “What?!” Didn’t know that. It makes you want to just get up and explore. I’ve been living in Atlanta 2 years and I always wondered how do you find all the good places and fun places when you don’t really know anyone, or when I want to travel to another state over I want to know what’s good there and maximize my time and money. This app solves those issues! Thank you!! Love this app.

Developer Response ,

Hi NiseBaby77. Thanks so much for the great review. We're delighted that the Culture Trip app is helping you to find places you want to go and fun things you can do.

The Best Travel & Culture Site

While this site has articles highlighting “best of” events, sights, etc., which are great, they provide much more detail than other sites about the art, food, culture, history, geography, and people in the area. The writers have usually spent considerable time in the areas about which they write so you can rely on their information. And the pieces are well written. We are traveling in southern France and their articles covered east to west, beaches to mountains and also covered weather & events at differing times of year. I plan on consulting Culture Trip from now on before we travel.
Thank you so much 😊! Really happy to hear you had a good experience with the app and the site. We are here to help you your future travels.

App No Longer Functions

I used to use this app all the time to help with trip planning. Recently it has totally stopped working; I cannot save any posts and cannot even log on the app. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it to see if it would fix the problem but it has not. I can’t access any plans I made previously either. The problem started around the time they took away the section about hotels/hotel booking. That was always a useful way to find out key details about amenities, neighborhoods, etc. Even without hotel information, the app would still be useful to plan dining and activities for travel. Unfortunately, due to its lack of functionality, the app is close to useless now. This has been weeks or months now.

8 best things to do in Cabo San Lucas for an unforgettable trip

Don't skip out on these attractions.

Amanda Teague

Located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is a paradise with stunning beaches , a vibrant nightlife scene, and gorgeous natural attractions. No matter what type of vacation you are looking for, Cabo San Lucas has something to offer you. Whether you are a thrill-seeker or a laid-back traveler, here are the 8 best things to do in Cabo San Lucas.

  • 1. Explore Land’s End and El Arco

2. Relax on El Medano Beach

3. enjoy fresh seafood, 4. go snorkeling in cabo pulmo national park, 5. visit flora farms, 6. go on a whale-watching tour, 7. play golf.

  • 8. Explore the city’s nightlife scene

Check out these fun things to do in Cabo San Lucas

1. explore land’s end and el arco.

Exploring Land’s End is easily one of the best things to do in Cabo San Lucas. Land’s End is located at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, which is about two miles from downtown Cabo San Lucas. On Land’s End, you’ll find El Arco, which is a stunning rock formation that has become one of Cabo’s most iconic landmarks. If you want to view El Arco, you can hop on a boat tour or kayak excursion to see this beautiful sight up close.

No trip to Cabo is complete without a visit to El Medano Beach. El Medano Beach is one of the most popular swimmable beaches in all of Los Cabos and is easily accessible from the downtown area. In this area, you’ll find several beachfront shops and restaurants, as well as opportunities for snorkeling, jet-skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. You’re also able to view Land’s End from the shores of El Medano Beach.

  • 3 things you need to know about mountain biking in Sedona

Cabo San Lucas is renowned for its fresh seafood, so indulging in some of the local culinary delights is a must. From casual beachfront eateries like Tequila Shark GastroBar and Fisherman’s Landing to upscale fine dining establishments like Lorenzillo’s, you’ll find an abundance of options to satisfy your seafood cravings.

For those who want to explore Cabo from underneath the water, a visit to Cabo Pulmo National Park is a must. Cabo Pulmo National Park is one of the most vibrant coral reefs in North America, offering snorkeling and diving opportunities that you can’t find anywhere else. When snorkeling through the gorgeous waters of the Sea of Cortez, you’re sure to find colorful tropical fish, manta rays, and even the occasional whale shark.

Escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Cabo and take a trip to Flora Farms, which is an organic farm oasis nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains. This 25-acre working farm offers spa treatments, cooking classes, summer movie nights, and more. While visiting Flora Farms, you can wander through the lush gardens and enjoy farm-to-table dining at the onsite restaurant. If you prefer to stay in this area during your visit, you can even check out the attraction’s vacation rentals.

Cabo San Lucas is one of the best spots in the world for whale watching, especially between mid-December and April. During this time, thousands of gray whales migrate from their feeding grounds in the Arctic to the warm waters of the Baja California Peninsula to breed and give birth. Whale-watching tours offer the opportunity to witness these incredible animals up close. With knowledgeable guides offering insights into the whales’ behavior and biology, a whale-watching tour in Cabo is an unforgettable adventure.

Cabo is home to some of the world’s most spectacular golf courses, offering wonderful opportunities for golfers of all skill levels. Golf enthusiasts can play a round of golf while enjoying stunning ocean views and breathtaking sunsets. One standout course is the Cabo del Sol Cove Club Course, which winds its way along the coastline, providing golfers with panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez at every turn. If you are looking for a more secluded setting, then the Querencia Golf Club offers a private, members-only experience.

8. Explore the city’s nightlife scene

Cabo San Lucas’ nightlife scene is legendary, drawing in thousands of people from around the world every year. As the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean, the city comes alive. From lively beachfront bars serving up delicious cocktails to upscale lounges and bustling nightclubs, there’s something for every preference in Cabo. Are you trying to be a more organized traveler? Packing and unpacking can be stressful unless you have the right traveling gear like packing cubes. If you know the last time you packed, your suitcase was not neat and organized, avoid all the tumbles and aimless searching on your next trip with tidy packing cubes. You won't have to deal with losing your items or the endless piles of clothes on the hotel room floor.

With one of the best packing cubes on your side, you can optimize your packing. A packing cube is one of the best travel accessories for long flights, road trips, and organized travel. Packing cubes are designed to separate and organize clothing, protecting them from wrinkles and offering optimum luggage organization. The organizer in you is going to love the way your clothing and accessories stay put, and you won’t be embarrassed to open your suitcase in front of someone else. Our recommendations for packing cubes

If you're planning a trip to the Bahamas, one of the first things you'll need to sort out is your travel documentation. As a U.S. citizen, you generally need to have a valid passport book or passport card to enter the Bahamas by air or sea. While it's close to the United States, it's not part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory. As such, you'll need to meet the same entry requirements as you would for any other foreign country.

What you should know before traveling to the Bahamas There are some details to keep in mind when it comes to the required travel documents for entering the Bahamas. Can you use your driver's license to go to the Bahamas? No, a driver's license alone is not sufficient for entry into the Bahamas. Even though the Bahamas is a relatively short distance from the U.S., you'll still need to present a valid U.S. passport book or passport card when arriving by air or sea.

Jamaica offers an eclectic experience for the modern traveler. As the recognized birthplace of reggae, the island country lets you hang loose and feel the beat. Natural wonders like the Luminous Lagoon dazzle the senses. Unique, flavorful cuisines like rich stews and fresh seafood entice and satisfy. But first, you have to get there.

Typically, traveling to another country requires a passport. But if you're new to the island nation, you might wonder — do you need a passport to go to Jamaica? Here’s what you need to travel there and back so you can experience an island nation like nothing else.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

trip travel explore

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

trip travel explore

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

trip travel explore

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

trip travel explore

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

trip travel explore

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

trip travel explore

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

trip travel explore

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

As the search for the best summer vacation intensifies, more and more are searching for an escape from the digital chaos everyday life brings, according to a new report.

Forget about checking out those hot and crowded trendy cities for your next summer trip and instead think of peaceful, tranquil relaxation.

“In 2024, wellness travel will take over. As the hustle and bustle of daily life takes its toll, travelers seek digital detox and solace in serene landscapes and rejuvenating experiences,” the Pinterest Summer 2024 Travel Report read.

“Say goodbye to crowded cities and hello to off-the-beaten-path destinations that promise tranquility and self-discovery.”

“Quiet Life Travel” is this year’s hottest craze as people are searching for a “quieter, more serene lifestyle,” according to the new report.

"Say goodbye to crowded cities and hello to off-the-beaten-path destinations that promise tranquility and self-discovery."

This longing for simplicity has extended to travel — since last year, searches for “quiet places” and “calm places” have increased by 50% and 42% respectively,” search data on Pinterest found.

The travel report found “Quiet Life” gained over 530% more interest this year compared to 2023 as users are in need of a digital detox filled with nature destinations.

Many interested in the “Quiet Life” want to do it by themselves as “Solo travel” was also at the top of the travel trends.

“Solo travel emerges as a liberating choice, granting individuals the freedom to craft their itinerary, pace, and priorities without compromise.

“Whether basking in the tranquility of a secluded beach or meandering through serene countryside landscapes, these experiences contribute to self-care and overall well-being.”

Never miss a story.

A prospective “quiet life travel” itinerary could include forest walks, island life, village vibes, cabins in the woods, national parks and the countryside.

The best places to fulfill that much-needed digital reset include the Japanese city of Okinawa and the English countryside.

Other excursion ideas that have seen higher search traffic on Pinterest include “Adventure Travel” and “Mysterious Places.”

The thrill-seeking adventurers showed interest in luxury safari lodging, mountaineering, scuba diving and caving.

“It’s a testament to seeking exhilaration, a reconnection with nature, and a departure from the mundane—a collective yearning for experiences that offer an adrenaline rush, immersion in nature and elevation of the spirit.

“Achieving goals in adventurous settings can foster a sense of accomplishment and empowerment,” the report said.

Meanwhile haunted, lost and abandoned cities and locales were the top trends for those on their quest for wonder.

“Venturing into the depths of ancient cities or uncovering forgotten realms becomes a daring odyssey, pushing boundaries and unraveling profound truths about oneself and the world.”

The travel report found that “London lifestyle,” “South African food,” and “Santorini party” were found as the top trending destinations and interests.

Travel experts recently revealed that a majority of Americans are planning a road trip this summer beginning Memorial Day weekend.

A prospective "quiet life travel" itinerary could include forest walks, island life, village vibes, cabins in the woods, national parks and the countryside.

The anonymous survey from The Vacationer asked more than 1,000 American adults if and how they plan to travel this summer with nearly 82% of Americans planning to travel this summer, which could be more than 212 million adults throughout the season.

Seventy-five percent of Americans intend to take at least one road trip this summer, most driving somewhere within 100 miles of their home.
