Someone else may have ideas.

You could try these: http://www.fresnohelicoptercharters.com/helicopters/California/Mariposa/Yosemite-National-Park-helicopter-charters-95389.html there are no prices on the website and their pictures don't show anything that looks particularly Yosemite valley like.

These look like they are out of Mammoth Lakes, not Yosemite: http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g60791-d2323028-Reviews-SkyTime_Helicopter_Tours-Mammoth_Lakes_California.html#photos

These people look like they will fly you near to Yosemite (Mariposa) but not into the valley: http://www.goldengatehelicopters.com/corp-yosemite.html from Mariposa you then get driven to the valley. I suppose if your time is very short that would be an option, but I don't think that's what you have in mind.

I wonder if the weather might also be a big factor if you want to do this in December. Also, when you mention hotel drop-off and pick-up, do you have your accommodation planned?

Edit - Just saw in your original message that you say you have been searching, probably you have already seen these!

I think a tour over the Eastern Sierra would be breathtaking ( http://www.skytime.com/ ) and well worth it. Although in winter, it's hard to access Mammoth Lakes, depending on where you are staying, as weather will have likely closed the direct routes. Do you have your accommodations yet?

Years ago someone suggested a fixed wing tour high over the National Park, but I don't think it runs in winter. It was based somewhere around Groveland or Oakdale, but I don't remember the specifics.

Lake Tahoe seems a possibility http://www.renotahoehelicopters.com/

Having said that, I have enjoyed helo tours of Hawaii and other destinations. If this is something you are interested in, look at some of the options above.

I haven't flown to Mammoth before but have spoken with folks who have and they described seeing Yosemite Valley before as well as the landing at Mammoth is supposedly pretty scenic.

There used to be several air tour companies using aircraft instead of helicopters. I haven't heard about many of them still operating.

But this company appears to still operate Yosemite air tours from the Columbia Airport with pickups available at the Pine Mountain Lake Airport that CaSwede mentioned.

Get a Bird’s Eye View of Yosemite on a Scenic Flight

Airborrn aviation / yosemite airways offers affordable scenic flights with views of el capitan, half dome and more..

For a perspective of Yosemite that few get to see, take a scenic flight with AirBorrn Aviation / Yosemite Airways. On this one-hour tour departing from Mariposa, you’ll fly in a four-seat Cessna aircraft and soar high above Yosemite Valley. Protecting the peace and quiet of Yosemite is important to AirBorrn Aviation, so your plane will fly at altitudes high enough that people and wildlife on the ground below won’t even notice you’re there. The flight provides sweeping views of the park from the air. You’ll peer down at Yosemite Valley, see the imposing faces of El Capitan and Half Dome from above and even pass high above the giant sequoias of Mariposa Grove, which don’t look so giant from the sky.

“No matter what day you go up, the views are always incredible,” says owner Tony Borreson. “Sometimes you’ll see snow-capped peaks or sometimes you’ll see a rainbow in the mist from one of the waterfalls.”

Tony Borreson, Airborrn Aviation, next to one of his planes.

The company has three planes that can fit up to 3 passengers, depending on total weight. Each flight is private so your party will get an intimate experience with a knowledgeable pilot explaining what you’re seeing over a headset. The views are great no matter which flight you choose, but photographers will want to book the plane nicknamed “Joy” which has bubble windows up front and port windows in the rear that open to allow for unobstructed photos. You can book a flight year-round, thanks to heaters inside the plane to keep you warm on winter days.

Flying over a waterfall's rainbow in Yosemite with Airborrn Aviatiion

At $199 per person, these scenic flights are some of the most affordable you’ll encounter. AirBorne Aviation / Yosemite Airways has been in the scenic flight business for seven years and safety is their number one priority. They don’t fly on bad weather days and all planes are well maintained.

The company also offers charter services throughout the West and is planning on adding helicopter tours in 2023. The helicopter tours will remain outside of Yosemite National Park for visitor’s serenity but the views at a distance will still be spectacular.

Photo of Admini

Hello Kind Reader! Looking for an unforgettable adventure in Yosemite National Park? Consider booking a Yosemite helicopter tour to witness the stunning beauty of this natural wonder from above. From towering waterfalls to lush greenery, helicopter tours offer a unique and exhilarating way to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes of Yosemite. Don’t miss the chance to capture breathtaking views and create unforgettable memories on your next vacation.

Best Time for a Yosemite Helicopter Tour

yosemite-helicopter-tour,Best Time for a Yosemite Helicopter Tour,thqBestTimeforaYosemiteHelicopterTour

A Yosemite helicopter tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering breathtaking views of some of the most iconic landmarks in the park. However, the best time for a Yosemite helicopter tour can vary depending on the weather, the time of year, and other factors.

Spring is a popular time for a Yosemite helicopter tour. During this season, you can see the waterfalls at their peak flow, wildflowers in bloom, and the park’s wildlife becoming more active.

Summer is the busiest time of year in Yosemite. A Yosemite helicopter tour during this time will offer a chance to see the park’s lush greenery and busy hiking trails. However, be prepared for crowds and warm temperatures.

Fall is a less crowded time to visit Yosemite, making it a great time for a helicopter tour. During this time, you can see the changing colors of the park’s foliage and enjoy cooler temperatures.

In winter, Yosemite’s landscape transforms into a winter wonderland with snow covering the trees and mountains. A helicopter tour during this time will give you a unique perspective on the park’s winter landscape.

Types of Yosemite Helicopter Tours

yosemite-helicopter-tour,Types of Yosemite Helicopter Tours,thqTypesofYosemiteHelicopterTours

There are different types of Yosemite helicopter tours available, ranging from short scenic flights to longer tour packages that allow you to explore the park’s highlights in depth.

Scenic Flights

A scenic flight is a great option if you want to get a taste of what a Yosemite helicopter tour has to offer. These flights typically last between 15 to 20 minutes and cover some of the park’s most iconic landmarks such as Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and more.

Explorer Tours

Explorer tours are ideal if you want a more in-depth experience of the park. These tours last around an hour and provide a comprehensive tour of Yosemite’s most famous points of interest. You’ll get to see sights such as Yosemite Valley, Vernal and Nevada Falls, and much more.

Custom Tours

If you have specific requests or interests, custom tours are available. You can choose which areas of the park to visit and how long you want to stay in each location. This option is perfect for photographers, videographers, and anyone who wants a tailored experience.

Why Take a Yosemite Helicopter Tour?

yosemite-helicopter-tour,Why Take a Yosemite Helicopter Tour?,thqwhytakeayosemitehelicoptertour

If you’ve never taken a helicopter tour before, you might be wondering why it’s such a popular activity in Yosemite National Park. There are a few key reasons why a helicopter tour is an ideal way to experience this beautiful park.

Get a Bird’s-Eye View

One of the main reasons that people take helicopter tours of Yosemite is to get a bird’s-eye view of the park. From this height, you can see features that you would never be able to see from the ground, such as the full extent of Yosemite Valley or the top of Half Dome. This unique perspective gives you a greater appreciation for the size and scope of the park.

Avoid the Crowds

Another reason to take a helicopter tour is to avoid the crowds. Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular parks in the United States, and during the peak season, it can get quite crowded. By taking a helicopter tour, you can escape the crowds and enjoy the park in peace.

In addition to these benefits, a helicopter tour also allows you to see more of the park in a shorter amount of time. Instead of spending several days hiking to see the different areas of the park, you can see it all from the air in just a few hours. The convenience and ease of a helicopter tour make it an ideal activity for travelers who want to see all that Yosemite has to offer.

The Benefits of Taking a Yosemite Helicopter Tour

yosemite-helicopter-tour,The Benefits of Taking a Yosemite Helicopter Tour, thqTheBenefitsofTakingaYosemiteHelicopterTour

If you’re considering going on a helicopter tour of Yosemite National Park, you’re in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Here are some of the benefits of taking a helicopter tour:

1. Breathtaking Views

When you explore Yosemite on foot, you can only cover so much ground. A Yosemite helicopter tour gives you a bird’s-eye view of the beauty and grandeur of the park. From the comfort of your seat, you’ll be able to see more of Yosemite than you ever could on a ground-level tour. You’ll get to see the vast terrain, the soaring mountains, and the mighty valleys.

2. Unique Experience

There’s nothing quite like flying above Yosemite National Park in a helicopter. It’s a unique experience that you’ll never forget. The thrill of taking off, soaring through the air, and landing back on the ground is an adventure that few get to experience. Plus, a helicopter tour is a great way to celebrate a special occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary.

What to Expect During the Yosemite Helicopter Tour

yosemite-helicopter-tour,What to Expect During the Yosemite Helicopter Tour, thqWhattoExpectduringtheYosemiteHelicopterTour

If you’re considering a Yosemite helicopter tour, it’s important to have an idea of what you can expect from the experience. First, you will board your helicopter and buckle up for an exciting ride. Once the tour starts, you will be amazed by the stunning views of the park from the air. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of all the iconic landmarks in the park, from Half Dome to El Capitan and Yosemite Falls. During the tour, you might even get a chance to see wildlife from a unique perspective, as the helicopter can fly lower than a commercial plane.

The Duration of the Tour

The duration of the tour can depend on the tour company and the specific tour package you choose. Some tours can last anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. Be sure to check with the tour company for an estimate of how long the tour will take so you can plan accordingly.

The Best Time to Go on a Yosemite Helicopter Tour

The ideal time to schedule a Yosemite helicopter tour is during the summer months when the weather is clear and visibility is good. However, it’s important to note that the tour is dependent on the weather and may be cancelled or postponed due to unfavorable conditions.

The best time to take a Yosemite helicopter tour can vary depending on your preferences and the experience you’re looking for. The park is open year-round, but the best time to visit Yosemite is from May to September when all roads and facilities are open, and the weather is usually warm. During this time, you can expect to see beautiful wildflowers, raging waterfalls, and clear blue skies. If you want to avoid the crowds, the best time to visit Yosemite is in April, October, and November. However, some helicopter tour providers operate only during peak months, so make sure to check the availability beforehand.

Yosemite Helicopter Tour in Summer

Summer is the busiest time of the year for Yosemite, and it’s also the best time to see the park’s iconic highlights. You’ll enjoy long days, clear skies, and warm temperatures, making it a perfect time for an aerial view of Yosemite. The waterfalls are also at their peak flow, and you can see wildlife in their natural habitats. However, it’s worth noting that the park can get crowded, and the tour rates may get higher as well.

Yosemite Helicopter Tour in Winter

If you prefer to avoid crowds and still experience Yosemite’s beauty, winter can be a great time to take a helicopter tour. The park is less crowded, and you might even get a chance to see the snow-capped mountains and the frozen waterfalls. However, note that the tours’ availability may be limited, depending on the weather conditions.

Best Time to Take a Yosemite Helicopter Tour

yosemite-helicopter-tour,Best Time to Take a Yosemite Helicopter Tour, thqBestTimetoTakeaYosemiteHelicopterTour

One of the most frequently asked questions before booking a Yosemite helicopter tour is the ideal time to take it. The answer really depends on your preferences and whether you want to avoid crowds or experience Yosemite in a specific season. For those who want to take advantage of the sunny skies, the best time to visit Yosemite and take a helicopter tour is from May to September when temperatures generally range from 50°F to 70°F. However, it is the peak tourist season, so expect more crowds and higher prices.

Spring is a beautiful time to visit Yosemite when the snow melts, and the waterfalls are at their peak. Mid-April to early June is the best time to catch the waterfalls at their very best when snowmelt is at its peak. The Merced River and its tributaries are also swollen, and the valley’s meadows are full of colorful flowers.

Since summer is the peak tourist season in Yosemite, it can be crowded, but it’s also the best time for outdoor activities. From July to August, you can enjoy longer daylight hours, go hiking, or take a Yosemite helicopter tour to enjoy the spectacular snow-free vistas of the park. However, make sure to book your helicopter tour in advance to ensure availability.

The best time to avoid the crowds but still capture the beauty of Yosemite is during the fall. September through November is when the summer crowds have gone home, rendering discounted lodging and an empty park waiting for you to explore. Besides the spectacular autumn foliage, fall also brings in great weather, making it an ideal time for Yosemite helicopter tours.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

By shuguley , February 15, 2014 in Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

Link to comment

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Highly recommend – best trip ever!

Review of: Convertible Jeep 4 X 4 Yosemite Park Tour with Hotel Pickup Highly, highly recommend. Amazing views, experience, and guide! We laughed, enjoyed the natural beauty of the park through the open top of the Jeep, and couldn’t have possibly seen everything we did in just one day without this tour! We hit all the best photo spots (with help and recommendations from our guide), and had a carefree experience so we could just enjoy the park! I don’t have enough great things to say about our trip! Thanks Ram and Crossroads!!

5 Star to the tour guide

We had a fantastic experience as a family doing a winter trip to Yosemite. We were overwhelmed with the guides knowledge and being patient with us while taking longer time at places. Overall a must do experience.

Truly stunning

Review of: Full Day Small Group Yosemite & Glacier Point Tour – with Hotel Pickup ! We were picked up in a cosy air conditioned van. We were a group of 9 which was a great size.

We stopped off at Fern Spring and filled water bottles with the spring water using water bottles given to us by our guide. The water was amazing and nice and cold.

We then started the tour and visited various sites, Yosemite is truly stunning and your jaw will be sore from the amount of times it hits the flaw. We stopped for lunch which was provided and it was really nice. We had lunch in the grounds of the lodge hotel in Yosemite, which itself is a beautiful place.

We then finished the rest of the tour of more beautiful places finishing up at the base of El Capitan to watch the crazy people climbing up 🙂

The guide was great and took lots of photos of us and was really pleased to do so, he was also very knowledgeable of the park and all the different areas.

A perfect way to see it all!

Review of: Full Day Small Group Yosemite & Glacier Point Tour – with Hotel Pickup ! Our tour guide Richard was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. My fiancé and I had an amazing experience, we saw the highlights of Yosemite which was awe inspiring. The lunch was really good my veggie sandwich was delicious. We even got to drink out of a natural spring on the valley floor. I highly recommend taking this tour.
