Outdoors | 6 colorado horseback rides that will have you high in the saddle, trail rides provide unique views, from the western slope to rocky mountain national park.

We’re sharing six of our favorite horse riding adventures in Colorado, from afternoon trail rides to multi-day pack trips that culminate with stories around a campfire.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Unless you have a horse of your own, being a guest of Zapata Ranch may be your only ticket to ride in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve — and it’s an experience like no other. As you make your way into the park, you’re greeted by the towering sand dunes that have intrigued everyone from astronauts orbiting Earth to sandboarders looking for something to shred after the snow melts.

“As you ride, you’ll feel the sand shifting beneath your horse’s hooves, and you’ll be completely immersed in the beauty and serenity of the natural landscape around you,” ranch manager Kate Matheson says.

During the ride you’ll be accompanied by an experienced guide who can dish out facts about the landscape, ecology and wildlife in the national park. Double occupancy rates at Zapata Ranch start at $325 per night. ranchlands.com/pages/explore-zapata-ranch

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is not just Colorado’s most popular park; it was also the fourth-most-visited national park in the country in 2022, drawing more than 4.3 million people. Break away from the crowds by exploring the Grand County side of the park and booking a one-hour ($75) or two-hour ($115) trail ride with Winding River Resort .

The beginner-friendly rides deliver postcard-perfect park views – colorful wildflowers, gentle streams, thick evergreens, snow-capped peaks. The resort also offers pony rides for pint-sized equestrians.

After the trail ride, downtown Grand Lake offers all kinds of “mountain town in the summer” classics — fudge shops, miniature golf and a boardwalk along the shores of Colorado’s deepest natural lake.  windingriverresort.com

Garden of the Gods Park

From rock formations that resemble a pair of kissing camels to Balanced Rock, which looks like Mother Nature’s precarious rendition of Jenga, and earthy-orange serrated sandstone fins that slice into the sky, there’s much to marvel at while exploring this city park in Colorado Springs.

Take it all in on horseback while also learning about the park’s history and wildlife during a wrangler-led ride with Academy Stables . A fun fact: The rock formations were shaped 230 million years ago, long before horses made it to North America. Rides cost $95 for an hour and $155 for two hours. academyridingstables.com

Brown’s Creek Falls

Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Stables offers several excursions on horseback, including a sunset ride and an adventure ride that meanders through piñon pines and a canyon before ascending to a mesa. But the most popular option is the six-hour Waterfall Trail Ride that delivers you to a cascading waterfall in the San Isabel National Forest. You’ll probably spot wildflowers, too, and riders have a chance to get off their horses for a short hike. The Waterfall Trail Ride costs $185. coloradotrailrides.com

C Lazy U in Granby

Horses are at the heart of this all-inclusive luxury ranch in Grand County, something guests are reminded of should they wake at dawn to witness the thunderous herd of 200 horses triumphantly returning from their overnight at pasture. The beloved tradition is known as the “jingle.”

C Lazy U guests can embark on daily trail rides and brush up on their horsemanship with instruction sessions led by accomplished equestrians. Back at the ranch, slink into a therapeutic copper tub at the spa for a Cowboy Soak to relieve sore muscles. Many guests return to the ranch each summer to reunite with horses they’ve ridden and bonded with in previous years. Summer cabin rates start at $693 per night, per person. clazyu.com

Multi-day trip from Mancos

Looking for a longer adventure imbued with cowboy culture? Rimrock Outfitters , which is located in Mancos between Durango and Mesa Verde National Park, offers multi-day trips.

The Mountain Trip can be as short as an overnight ($350 per person) or as long as three nights ($1,200), and take you through wildflower fields, past Golconda, an abandoned mining town, and traversing the switchbacks of Box Canyon Trail. The outfitter provides tents and cots as well as campfire meals, like steaks grilled over a bed of coals and fruit cobblers best enjoyed with cowboy songs. rimrockoutfitters.com

Guide to horseback riding in colorado.

Horseback Riding Estes Park Colorado

Colorado and horseback riding have a long rich history together. The Spanish were the first to bring horses to the region, and it forever changed the American West. From increased hunting abilities to faster transport, the gentle giants were used to fuel America’s growth.

The image of a cowboy riding off into a sunset is a stereotype of the Old West. And you can live that reality at locations all around the state, from the eastern plains to the highest mountain towns. Some ranches provide year-round tours, while others are limited to the warmer summer season.

Tours generally start out with an introduction to how to sit on and properly communicate with your horse. Once the basics are down, you’ll be matched with one based on your size and ability and venture out with your group and guide. Immerse yourself in the stunning scenery that appears even more genuine when riding on the back of an equine.

If you or members of your group are not comfortable or able to hop on a horse, consider checking out one of the many outfitters offering sleigh rides in Colorado . These trips take place in the winter months, and you still get the chance to move around the backcountry in a unique way, but without the physical exertion needed to actually ride.

Riding at a Ranch

Three people on brown horses riding through a hilly area covered in snow at C Lazy U Guest Ranch

Horseback riding is also a popular activity at dude ranches in Colorado , offering an authentic Western experience. Visitors can explore the beautiful scenery of Colorado’s mountains, forests, and valleys with various outing options available. These include short rides for beginners, all-day excursions, leisurely trail treks, cattle drives, and even multi-day pack trips.

Most ranches offer overnight accommodation, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the cowboy lifestyle fully. The three most popular ranches for riding in Colorado are Lost Valley Ranch, C Lazy U Ranch, and Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch. Riding is a wonderful way to connect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, making it an ideal activity for families, couples, or solo adventurers.

Tips for Guided Horseback Riding

  • Choose a reputable guide company: Research different guide companies in Colorado and read reviews from previous customers. Make sure the company is licensed and insured, and the guides are experienced and knowledgeable.
  • Wear appropriate clothing: Dress in layers, as the weather in Colorado can be unpredictable. Wear long pants and comfortable, closed-toe shoes with a low heel. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Follow instructions from the guide: Listen carefully to the guide’s instructions and follow them closely. The guide knows the area, the horses, and the terrain, and their instructions are for your safety and enjoyment.
  • Pack a small bag with essentials: Bring water, snacks, and any medication you may need. A camera to capture the beautiful scenery would also be a great thing to have, but make sure it is securely stored.
  • Respect the horses: Treat the animals with respect and kindness. Follow the guide’s instructions on how to interact with them and never attempt to ride or lead a horse without permission.

Hi, my name is Ginger DeRay...

…and I am the owner and operator of A&A Historical Trails Stables.

I was born on a cold, stormy Feb. day in 1955 in Grand Lake, CO, where my parents operated a lodge and a pony ring by the lake. My parents eventually lost the lodge because of “paperwork.” Penniless, they moved to Aurora (east Denver) with a pony ring to start Saddle Lane Stables. I don’t remember when I first rode a horse. I do remember, however, helping my mom make ribbons from scratch… ribbons that were given away every Sunday to participants in the weekly gymkanas my parents offered. When I was 14, I left my parents, my three sisters, my two bothers, and my home in order to find my destiny. Six months later, I realized what my destiny was… it was that which I had left! So homeward bound I went with a new outlook on life and a new respect for my parents and environment.

A&A Historical Trails Reviews ★★★★★

My teenage daughter and I wanted to ride horses in the mountains during our Colorado vacation and we found this place not far from our lodgings. We went on a one hour ride as we are both veginners. Our guide was super informative and picked the perfect horses for us.

I almost didn't make it out here, but am so thankful that I did! It is difficult to access without a car, but I took a "casino" shuttle bus from downtown Denver, and Ginger, the owner picked me up at the casino! Talk about great service!

We took the cemetery ride which provided both a fantastic view up the mountains along an authentic but long abandoned mining road and a short but welcome break (for the occasional rider) to walk around the historic Russel Gulch cemetery. What a great time and experience!

After the ride, Ginger was there waiting and we helped put the horses up and all the tack. We spoke to Ginger and Barb for a little while about horses, Colorado, and life and had a great time. We will be back, can't wait to do another ride. We have ridden horses most of our lives, these horses were in great shape and eager to go at any moment. Can't say enough good things about Ginger and Barb, thanks so much for a great time. Anthony and Tracey

I have been coming up to A&A Historical Trails for years and the trails and views just keep getting better and better! The trail Ginger has for 2016 is magnificent! Her horses are all well behaved and very safe.

Choosing the Right Stables

When it comes to horseback riding in Colorado, choosing the right stables can make all the difference. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a stable:

Consider the location of the stables. Are they close to where you are staying or visiting? Are they easily accessible? You don’t want to spend hours driving to and from the stables before even beginning your ride.

Check the experience level of the stables. Do they cater to beginners or experienced riders? If you are a beginner, you will want to choose a stable that has horses and guides suitable for your skill level. Similarly, if you are an experienced rider, you will want to choose a stable that can provide more challenging trails and horses.

Read reviews of the stables before booking. Check websites like TripAdvisor or Yelp to see what other riders have to say about their experiences. Look for stables with consistently positive reviews and avoid those with many negative reviews.

Safety should be a top priority when choosing a stable. Check if the stables have safety protocols in place and if their guides are trained in first aid. Make sure they provide helmets and other safety gear for riders.

Look at photos of the stables and their horses before booking. Make sure the horses look healthy and well-cared for. Check if the stables have a variety of horses to choose from, including different breeds and sizes.
