About hsbc travel insurance claims.
HSBC Travel Insurance is provided by Aviva Insurance Limited. Aviva manages the claims process from start to finish so that your claims are handled as quickly and efficiently as possible.
When to make an HSBC Travel Insurance claim
If your trip has been cancelled, your first step should be to contact your travel and/or accommodation provider for a refund.
If you paid any part with your debit or credit card or PayPal, you may also contact the payment provider for a refund. If you paid with an HSBC debit or credit card, here’s how you can raise a dispute .
Claiming a refund from either your travel operator or your card provider may lead to a better outcome for yourself than claiming via your travel insurance, as you may be able to claim the full amount you paid without having to pay an excess. You could also potentially recover losses for all the party members on the booking, some of whom may not have taken insurance. You can find further useful information on this topic on the MoneyHelper website. If you’ve been unable to get a refund from your travel and/or accommodation provider or your payment provider, please contact Aviva to make a claim.

New HSBC World Elite Mastercard Features & Premium Card Are Here
HSBC has rolled out changes to many of their credit cards, including the popular HSBC World Elite Mastercard . These changes are in effect as of February 1, 2023.
In This Post
New features: hsbc world elite mastercard, new product: hsbc metal world elite mastercard, annual fee rebates.
One of our longtime favourite Mastercards for travel , the HSBC World Elite Mastercard is getting a modest but comprehensive makeover.
Some of our favourite features are staying the same, such as no foreign transaction fees , Boingo airport Wi-Fi, and the ability to transfer HSBC Rewards to frequent flyer programs.
Many areas are getting a slight adjustment, including earning rates, insurance, and ways to save on annual fees. Here are they key changes to be aware of as a traveller and points collector.
Category Earning Rates
The card has introduced new category bonuses. Here’s what you’ll earn on everyday spending:
- 6 points per dollar spent on travel
- 4 points per dollar spent on groceries, gas, and drugstores
- 2 points per dollar spent on all other purchases
With HSBC Rewards valued at 0.5 cents per point for statement credit, or more via airline transfer partners , the card earns a minimum of 1% back on every purchase.
Before, the card earned 6 points per dollar spent on travel, and 3 points per dollar spent on all other purchases.
While the move to category bonuses will be disappointing for anyone who highly valued the card’s uniquely strong base rate, it’ll benefit anyone who uses the HSBC World Elite Mastercard as their daily driver. Plus, it aligns HSBC more closely with its competitors, as almost all other Canadian credit cards use a category structure.
Improved Insurance
HSBC has also added new and improved insurance benefits for cardholders .
Emergency medical insurance is getting a significant boost. Now, you’ll now be covered for up to $2 million in claims for trips up to 31 days, or 21 days for cardholders 65 years or older.
Previously, cardholders were only covered for up to $1 million, and only those under the age of 65. This is a hugely generous protection for a vulnerable demographic, one that is often underserved by credit card insurance for that very reason.
Baggage delay insurance is also getting a boost. Instead of claiming up to $750 for delays of 12 hours or longer, you can claim up to $1,000 for delays of six hours or longer.
Rounding out the travel coverage, there’s new insurance coverage for flight delays over 6 hours, and hotel burglary up to $1,000.
As for everyday purchases, cardholders will also enjoy mobile device insurance up to $1,000. Previously a niche perk, this coverage is now slowly making its way throughout the credit card industry.
Finally, HSBC has added price protection, a very exciting and rare feature on Canadian credit cards. You’ll be able to claim the difference between the price you paid and a lower advertised price, if the price drops within 60 days of your purchase, up to $500 per transaction and $1,000 per calendar year.
Needless to say, these insurance additions are sweeping, and HSBC has really stepped up here.
No More Supplementary Card Fee
The HSBC World Elite Mastercard has eliminated the $50 fee to add a supplementary card to your account. Plain and simple, this is a win for anyone who adds multiple users to the same spending account.
As before, you can add up to four supplementary cards to your account. Note that insurance benefits may vary for supplementary cardholders.
Finally, it’s worth noticing that HSBC has redesigned the art of their legacy credit cards, aligning them with their newer entry-level products .
I’ll miss the signature triangle lion, but I can’t begrudge HSBC for a cosmetic tweak in line with design trends across the financial services industry.
HSBC has launched the new HSBC Metal World Elite Mastercard, replacing the HSBC Jade World Elite Mastercard.
(Yes, the name of the product is the Metal card, and it is indeed metal!)
The card’s page on the HSBC website provides confusing information: the card is only available to HSBC Private (formerly Jade) banking clients; however, the $499 annual fee is waived for Private banking clients. It seems to me that you must be a Private client to apply for the card, but you can continue holding it (for a $499 annual fee) if you later decide to downgrade your HSBC relationship.
On top of the features of the mass-market HSBC World Elite Mastercard, the Metal card offers some truly premium benefits.
Most notably, the card offers a supercharged DragonPass membership with unlimited visits for the cardholder and one guest.
That’s a big step up from Visa Infinite Privilege cards, which only offer six complimentary visits per year. It also blows other Mastercards out of the water, many of which, including HSBC’s own World Elite Mastercard, offer a membership but no complimentary visits.
Unlimited lounge access puts the card on par with the Amex Platinum cards for accessing Plaza Premium lounges which are abundant in airports across Canada, not to mention over a thousand lounges worldwide.
As an interesting wrinkle, there’s no fee to add a supplementary cardholder. While the terms don’t specify, it seems to me that supplementary cards could also be eligible for a DragonPass membership of their own.
In that case, this card begins to resemble the Capital One Venture X Card in the United States, a premium credit card with annual rebates offsetting the high fee, and with which you can essentially gift unlimited lounge access to your family.
As a cherry on top, you’ll also get a $200 annual travel credit, up from $100.
If you’re a Private client with $1 million in personal assets at HSBC, the HSBC Metal World Elite Mastercard is a no-brainer to elevate your travel lifestyle at no extra cost.
HSBC is expanding and simplifying the annual fee rebates they offer for their banking clients.
HSBC has three banking tiers, with various requirements to qualify. To summarize, you can qualify for (from low to high) Advance, Premier, or Private banking on the basis of your balances, recurring deposits, mortgage with HSBC Canada, or HSBC tier in another country.
HSBC has revamped their credit card annual fee rebates, which can be applied towards any credit card:
- Private: full annual fee rebate
- Premier: $50 annual fee rebate
- Advance: $25 annual fee rebate
It appears they’ve also consolidated the old Premier World Elite Mastercard with the standard version, which only differed by offering a $50 annual fee rebate for Premier. This ought to streamline their product catalog, reducing needless complexity.
Combined with the $100 annual travel credit, this effectively reduces the $149 annual fee to $24 for Advance clients, or a net gain of $1 for Premier clients, respectively. For a card that already had strong appeal as a long-term keeper, that proposition has only gotten stronger.
If you’re not interested in the World Elite card, the HSBC +Rewards Mastercard’s $25 annual fee will be fully waived for any Advance, Premier, or Private client.
Overall, I’d say the upcoming changes to the HSBC World Elite Mastercard are mostly positive, and on balance a net win.
In particular, comprehensive insurance on travel and everyday purchases is quite impressive. I’m also pleased to see that the costs of being a cardholder are reduced for HSBC banking clients.
I’m sad to see the card’s strong base earn rate cut in favour of higher rewards on categorized spending. Most importantly, though, no foreign transaction fees are here to stay.
The new HSBC Metal World Elite Mastercard is an exciting introduction to the market as Canada’s first truly premium Mastercard, going toe-to-toe with industry leaders for travel benefits. It may give Private banking clients pause when considering whether to add the additional expense of a top-tier Visa or Amex.
As an HSBC banking client myself, I certainly plan on using my HSBC World Elite Mastercard long-term. Even with the reduced earn rate on uncategorized transactions, there’s still more than enough appeal to make this card an everyday fixture.
If you’re interested in the World Elite card, the current signup bonus for up to 80,000 HSBC Rewards points is still available until February 28, 2023. For the Metal World Elite card, I’d recommend making an appointment with a banking advisor.
- Earn 6 HSBC Rewards points per dollar spent on travel purchases
- Plus, receive an annual $100 travel enhancement credit *
- Transfer HSBC Rewards points to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and other frequent flyer programs for premium flights, or redeem points for statement credit for any travel expense
- No foreign transaction fees *
- Minimum income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household
- Annual fee: $149
For me losing the 1.5% on non category transactions is huge. I already have a BMO World Elite which offers better rewards in those categories. I’m debating whether to keep the card at all but probably will keep it and use it just for travel, also the travel enhancement credit is handy even if you only take 1 or 2 trips a year it almost pays the annual fee (which is now lower thanks to dropping supplemental card fee). The one annoying this is the card still doesn’t work with Google Pay/Wallet.
Seeing that HSBC Canada has been sold to RBC, these cards will all be discontinued by the end of 2023, and likely be replaced by inferior RBC cards. Not seeing much point to getting a card that will disappear in less than a year.
Thanks for the info. Would you say this is the best “no fx fee” card out there? Are there any others?
I got the email this week with the updates to the HSBC Jade World Elite® Mastercard®. As far as I can tell there are no differences in the core benefits. Earning rates are identical to the World Elite, insurance package the same. The annual fee was previously $299 and is now moving to $499 but that’s waived for Private Client clients (previously Jade).
For the extra money you get the Jade Concierge (is that now the Metal Concierge?) run by Ten Lifestyle and I assume the $200 annual travel credit remains since there is no mention of change (vs $100 for World Elite). Your DragonPass membership includes unlimited access for the cardholder and 1 guest at no cost. None of these items are changing though so they may be just deciding that the original $299 wasn’t sustainable.
I am a little concerned about the potential impact of businesses adding the credit card interchange fees onto transactions. I assume these cards carry a hefty charge and potentially adding 2+% to my purchasing costs would change the value calculation on these materially even with the annual fee waived.
Wondering if the new metal card is open for Premier customers and if there will be any annual fee rebate (?50$ maybe).
Thanks for the update. We do like the HSBC card.
Is the cap on the Travel bonus points changing? I believe now you receive 6 points / Travel $ up to $50k CAD (annual). Above $50k travel it is 3 points / $. If it there is still a cap will spending above the cap be at the 4 or 2 point level?
Here’s the new language. For me the bump for gas/groceries is welcome.
– 6 Points for $1 in Net Purchases which are Travel Purchases. This earn rate applies to a maximum of $50,000 in Travel Purchases on the Account in a calendar year. After the maximum is reached, the earn rate of 2 Points for $1 in Travel Purchases applies. – 4 Points for $1 in Net Purchases that are Gas, Grocery and Drugstore Purchases; – 2 Points for $1 in Net Purchases, other than Travel, Gas, Grocery and Drugstore Purchases
The no foreign transaction fee is a huge factor, saving 2.5% over other premium cards. That in and of itself is worth getting/keeping the card if you travel internationally or transborder.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison
How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?
The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.
Factors that determine travel insurance cost
There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:
- Age and number of travelers being insured.
- Trip length.
- Total trip cost.
- The travel insurance plan you choose.
- The travel insurance company.
- Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.
Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?
Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.
For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:
- Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
- Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.
Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance
Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.
- Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
- Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
- Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
- Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.
How to find the cheapest travel insurance
The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.
“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.
Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.
- How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
- Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
- The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.
Is cheap travel insurance worth it?
Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.
“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.
Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.
“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).
A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.
Methodology

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs
When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.
Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024
According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.
A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.
The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.
Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:
- Medical emergencies.
- Trip delays.
- Trip interruption.
- Trip cancellation.
- Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.
However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .
Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.
Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:
- Rental car damage coverage.
- Medical bundle.
- Security bundle.
- Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
- Adventure sports bundle.
- Pet bundle.
- Wedding bundle.
- “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
- “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
- “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .
