The basic criteria included 800 kg payload, A/C and hard roof along with 4×4 as a standard offering. The Safari was selected after undergoing a 15-month trial period. It comes under a new category of General Service 800 (GS800), which had three major requirements including an 800 kg payload, hard roof and air conditioning. Many of these vehicles being procured by Indian army will also be further customised based on specific use. Tata Safari is indeed a much better, spacious and comfortable SUV and a good buying choice by the Army.

About a year ago, Tata Motors had formally signed a contract to supply as many as 3,192 units of Safari Storme to the Indian Armed Forces. As we had reported earlier , the Safari Storme beat its prime rival, the Scorpio to become the choice of general vehicle for the Indian Armed forces. This conclusion was achieved after more than a year of rigorous testing conducted in various terrains across the country. Tata Motors has now officially begun deliveries of the Army-spec Safari Storme SUV.
The new Tata Safari Storme for the Indian army is categorised under the new GS800 (General Service 800) vehicle classification, which subscribes to the basic criteria of a capable hardtop vehicle with air-conditioning and a minimum payload of 800kg.
A new set of images show the Army-spec Tata Safari Storme from all angles. The SUV gets unique matte-green paint and is devoid of its chrome trim in order to avoid any type of reflection. The erstwhile chrome-bits are either painted in the same green shade as the vehicle, or have been blacked out. The vehicle gets special blacked-out lamps on the front and the rear bumpers. It also gets two special, heavy-duty hooks at the back and a unique jerry-can holder on the left rear fender. The alloy wheels are also painted in matte-green, like the rest of the body. Tata Motors had previously clarified that the Safari Storme for the armed forces gets an upgraded drivetrain and a significantly modified suspension setup. The standard vehicle comes with a 2.2litre diesel engine, which is good for 154hp and 400Nm of torque.
The army wanted to move away from a GS500 (General Service 500kg) platform – which includes the Gypsy – as the need was for a hardtop vehicle with a heavier payload-carrying capacity.
As mentioned before, Tata Motors has begun deliveries to the Army and Navy, which will take place in a phased manner.

Tata Safari Storme In Matte Green Shade Is The New Soldier In Indian Army
Tata Motors has beefed up the suspension and bettered the underside of the Indian Army-spec Safari Storme SUV for tackling all the harsh surface conditions
In April 2017, the Indian Army signed an agreement to replace the Maruti Gypsy in the 4×4 light vehicle category with the Tata Safari Storme as an initial order of nearly 3,192 vehicles came into existence. While outsmarting rivals, it was said that Tata offered a better financial deal than Mahindra.
The Indian Army prefers a single major model for the ease of logistics and since the Safari Storme is more powerful than the Gypsy with additional safety features and being powered by a diesel engine, it was chosen to lead the vehicle fleet.

Tata Motors also supplies 619 HMV military trucks to the Indian Army. Moreover, the Xenons are used by BSF majorly as new Border Out Post (BOP) vehicles to increase swift movement of our forces along the border. The military-spec Safari Storme 4×4 comes under a new category of vehicles called GS800 (General Service 800).
There are three main prerequisites to it such as minimum payload capacity of 800 kilos, hard roof-top and Air Conditioning and the Storme complies with all of them. Photographs of the Safari Storme prepared for the Indian Army have arrived on the internet and it looks uber-fantastic in a matte green shade.

Compared to the standard model, it has blacked out bumper lights emitting horizontal light beam, chrome touches all around, radio antenna on the bonnet, rear hook for mounting trailer and canister mounting provision on the rear fender.
Tata Motors has beefed up the suspension and bettered the underside of the SUV for tackling all the harsh surface conditions. It derives power from the same 2.2-litre four-cylinder Varicor diesel engine that produces 154 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of peak torque at 1,750 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission with low- and high-range alongside standard 4×4 configuration.

Here's How The 2021 Tata Safari Could Look Like If It Was Used By The Indian Army Again!
Tata Motors have already created a lot of buzz with the Tata Safari 2021 , an iconic nameplate that has been resurrected for the 7-seater sibling of the Tata Harrier . Tata Motors say that the 7-seater sibling of the Harrier was always conceived as a true successor to the Safari and there are several elements in the design that nod back to the original. The previous generation Tata Safari had also served as a proven workhorse for the Indian Army. If there's any iconic Indian Army vehicle after the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy , it has to be the Tata Safari.
While there's no word if the Indian Army could be using the Tata Safari 2021 as its official vehicle, here we have a rendering of the new Safari of how it could look like if it was actually used as one. The Indian Army used last-gen model’s GS800 rendition as its official vehicle which came with a few modifications to make it an apt vehicle for the Army. Based on that, this new-age Tata Safari 2021 sure looks more than up for the job. In the above image, the army-spec 2021 Safari comes painted in a Foilage Green paint shade, the same that was offered with the older army-spec Safari Storme GS800.

Another major upgrade for the SUV has been the addition of protection for all the glass areas - the front and rear windshields as well as the side glass panes. For improved illumination in the dark, it also comes fitted with an LED bar light on the roof. For supporting the radio equipment army vehicles come fitted with, there's a bunch of antennas fitted on the rear fender along with one on the front fender. Since army vehicles generally have a flag post, there's even a provision for that on the hood. Lastly, the army-spec Safari here comes fitted with steel wheels as as they can bear a lot more abuse.
But here's the thing. While the original Safari was a proper 4x4, the new Safari will be front-wheel driven, at least initially. And that's the only thing holding it back from being a capable army vehicle. Our army vehicles sure need a 4x4 system considering the treacherous terrains they usually tred on. Tata Motors have however assured that the Land Rover Discovery -derived D8 platform can be adapted to incorporate a four-wheel-drive system. Tata have said that based on customer feedback and research, they could actually explore the possibility of a 4x4 Safari sometime in the future.
When launched, the new Tata Safari 2021 will be powered by the Harrier's Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. The engine will come mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The new Safari will arrive in showrooms in January itself, and bookings for it will also commence later this month. It will come at a decent premium over the Harrier which is priced between INR 13.84-20.30 lakh and will rival the likes of the MG Hector Plus and upcoming next-gen Mahindra XUV500 .

From ‘Gypsy’ to ‘Safari’ to ‘Scorpio’; Indian Army drives a changing philosophy
Core use of light vehicles is transportation of troops for reconnaissance purposes
The Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary defines ‘Gypsy’ (noun) as ‘Anyone who travels often and does not live in one place for long’.
Scorpio (noun) is defined as the ‘Eighth sign of the zodiac, represented by a Scorpion (a small creature that has a curved tail with a poisonous sting)’ in the Cambridge Dictionary.
The semantic change from a sauntering ‘wanderer’ to a creature with a ‘poisonous’ sting may well be reflective of the current pro-active and forceful attitude of the Indian Army that believes in a vigorous response to any overture from across the border, as exemplified in events ranging from surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) to standing up to the People’s Liberation Army along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since April 2020.
The green ‘Gypsy’, made by Maruti Suzuki, ubiquitous in every nook and corner of an army cantonment, military area and on the narrow roads that lead to the borders of the country, is soon set to bid adieu after being extensively introduced in the Indian Army in the late 90s. It is to be replaced by the sturdy ‘Scorpio’, from the Mahindra stable, although between 2017 and 2019, some ‘Safaris’ made by Tata Motors were taken in underlining the fact that the Indian Army would have tried out the range of home-made light vehicles.
“With the light vehicle replacement rate at about 10 per cent of the total inventory, the process of replacement of the ‘Gypsy’ has already begun,” a senior official from the Indian Army told THE WEEK. “From 2022 onwards till now, about 4,000 ‘Scorpios’ have been inducted into the Army. From now on, only the ‘Scorpio’ will be procured, although a few ‘Gypsy’ vehicles were acquired for the last time last year,” the official added.
In operational areas, these light vehicles are usually used to carry a small body of troops for reconnaissance purposes or for use by the local commanders. Allotted unit-wise, an infantry regiment would deploy approximately 10-15 such vehicles while equipment-heavy units like air defence or artillery would employ about 20-30. And then at the battalion HQ level, about 5-10 would be used, 10-15 at the brigade HQ level and about 20 plus at the command headquarters level. In total, the total number of light vehicles in the Indian Army’s inventory would be in the 20,000-30,000 range.
In a related development, on Wednesday, the defence ministry had issued a Request for Information (RFI) to procure 7,500 trucks and lorries for all three services.
The request includes 5,000 lorries with payload capacity of 5 ton in hills, high altitude, cross country and desert terrain and 7.5 ton in plains, and 2,500 trucks with a payload capacity of 2.5 ton in hills, high altitude, cross country, plains and desert terrain and different climatic conditions as prevalent in the country. Both the vehicle types have to be four-wheel drives. While the former vehicle category allows transportation of 34 soldiers, about 14 can be ferried by the latter.
The current standard Indian Army truck is the Ashok Leyland Stallion of 5-ton capacity in difficult terrain and 7.5 ton in hard surface roads. It was preceded by the ‘Shaktiman’ truck that was manufactured at the state-owned Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur. There are approximately 50,000 such heavy vehicles in the Indian Army.
