  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent (unless you’re on an Original or Comfort style trip), occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the ‘big five’. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have drop down windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/africa/overland
  • To get to your Okavango Delta campsite, you'll travel by mokoro, a dugout canoe, to pass over the shallow waterways. Mokoros are small but stable, and local tribesman will be there to guide you.
  • There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
  • You may also want to check out our Cape to Zanzibar trip if you have more time to explore in Africa.
  • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is no longer mandatory on departures after 1st January 2023. Nonetheless, all travellers are strongly advised to be vaccinated as a safety measure to protect themselves and others on the tour. This policy excludes all Polar trips and select adventure cruises, where testing and vaccination are required.
  • Also, proof of vaccination may still be required at specific entry points or by the airlines. Therefore, please make sure to check all the travel requirements carefully before travelling.

This trip incorporates the following COVID-19 measures:

  • This tour has received the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Safe Travels stamp, which provides travellers with assurance that COVID-19 health and hygiene global standardised protocols have been adopted.

SOUTHERN AFRICA for 22 days was THE BEST with INTREPID!

AMAZING Southern Africa, Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe!! Perfect 22 day itinerary! Cape Town to Vic Falls. August-September 2022. So happy we did the BASIC tour. Even at mid 60’s & 70 years young, the camping was the best!! And our guide Nash was priceless, Charles was the most incredible chef accommodating vegetarians with a smile and oh my, Ben our driver went above and beyond getting us to our destinations safely! Love these three. Our group of 14 was so much fun. We are now lifelong friends though we all started as strangers. And our ages were 20’s to 70’s!! Tent camping in excellent tents under the African night sky was spectacular. The night sounds were mesmerizing. Each day was well though out and planned with fun, excitement and a learning experience all in one. And the animals!! We literally saw them all and that’s also due to the expert eyes and driving skills of Ben with Nash & Charles as sidekicks. Thank you Intrepid for your insight and planning and thanks to the best ‘3 Guys’ for making our first organized tour a great experience! I highly recommend this trip. I only wish I could continue. I want to keep experiencing the AFRICAN TV each day (that’s the sunrises and sunsets)!! I can’t wait to plan another Intrepid trip. East Africa and Kenya is on the list IF we can be assured it’s with the best three young men that Intrepid Travel has to call their own!! Thanks Nash, Charles & Ben. You three are in my heart forever! (Note: Departure Code: UXOF220821 & Departure Date: 220821)

Amazing time spent with a great group. Lots of iconic sites, everywhere is a postcard. 1st night in tents so far so good. Walked around Uluṟu and so many things to see.

intrepid travel victoria falls

Hello - Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your time exploring Uluru with us, we're so glad to hear you had an amazing time with a great group! With stunningly picturesque landscapes and iconic sites, we agree that it really is a postcard destination. We hope to welcome you on another trip soon.

I went on the Kenya to Vic Falls Intrepid tour which was 2 parts of a 4 part trip through eastern and southern Africa. Basically if you're going on any east/south Africa tour this will help you. Overall I had an amazing time, but here are a few things I wish I had known. 1. No need to get to Nairobi 5 days early like I did. Really I only needed one day to go to the Giraffe Center and Elephant Orphanage. Would do both again. 2. Everyone on the first part of the trip that went to see the gorillas and Masai Mara raved about it. I would go on parts 1 and 2 if I did it again instead of 2 and 3. 3. The part after Zanzibar down to Zimbabwe was really just a tour of campsites. There were a FEW highlights and I have bragging rights that I went to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi but it was not as good as the Nairobi to Zanzibar part. I'd say I liked 3 of the big stops, but otherwise it was getting up in the dark, sitting on a bus all day, and arriving at a non interesting campsite in the dark for too many days. 4. I'm a direction follower, so I read the part about the locker size on the truck and only brought a small duffle bag for the whole month - nice when getting on ferries and taking your bag on and off the truck...however if you are going for a longer time or traveling to other places - there were several people that had full sized suitcases and they fit on the truck just fine. 5. NO NEED FOR YOUR COMPUTER. I had mine with me because I was doing some traveling before and after and needed it, but I never took it out my entire time in Africa. You won't have wi-fi that often. And when you do, you'll need to stand on one foot, hold your finger up to the wind and cross your toes that you can get one text to go through to tell loved ones you're still alive. 6. I'm team no jammies when I travel for packing space and only travel with joggers or stretchy pants that I can both sleep in and wear during the day and this became very important for bathroom stops. You'll encounter bathrooms that will scar you for life. You don't want your pants touching the ground ladies! Bring joggers. Yeah, I'm weird. I think about that stuff. 7. I had one wrap dress with me on the trip thinking I would wear it on Zanzibar, but that is where the mosquitos were the worst, so I switched back into my safari wardrobe. I DID end up using it every time we "showered" (more on that later) as a robe. It's very hard to balance on one foot in a slippery communal shower to get dressed while you have a line of people are waiting for you. I found it easier to walk to and from the shower in my dress and change in my tent. If I went again I'd bring a robe instead of a towel. 8. I brought a clothes line and quickly made friends with someone who had a bucket to do laundry. BRING A COLLAPSIBLE BUCKET if you plan on doing laundry. I have always washed things in sinks when I traveled through Europe, but I guess I wasn't thinking - in Africa you won't always have a sink! I brought sheets of soap and I wish I had brought more. You will get DIRTY and need to wash things 2x. 9. I loved my shampoo and conditioner bar. No spills and saves space Throw in a mesh bag with a hook and you're in business. 10. I had 2 pairs of shoes - heavy duty tennis shoes and sandals for the shower and beach. 11. The mosquitos were not too bad in the winter and not an issue the further south we went in July. I only need repellant the first 2 weeks. Was better to just wear my used Craghopper clothing. 12. I'm glad I got a tent to myself. On other Intrepid trips I've had roommates and Intrepid travelers are always good travel buddies, but it's kind of close quarters and I'm an introvert. After spending 15 hours with your group on the truck and sight seeing, it's nice to have a place to retreat to. The tent was hard to set up on my own, but someone was always willing to lend a hand. 13. I did rain and it was often chilly! Bring that jacket! 14. Uhhh...the "showers." Well, everyone had their different ways of dealing with the cold low pressure showers. Some are the jump in and go for it type. I was the use the waist high spigot and just splash water on important places type. Use the pools as a prewash with you can. We did every once in a while have a nice warm shower. We all smelled together though and it's not a big deal. 15. Bring more AMERICAN dollars than you think you'll need. In fact always have more cash than you think you'll need. You can always exchange it along the way. I needed more money than I thought at the boarders. Speaking of boarders - have a lot of patience and money. Prepare to get swindled and have your time wasted. Not Intrepid's fault. 16. In Zimbabwe there is an optional rhino tracking/safari tour. Go. I mean, what else are you going to do? Hang out at the awful campsite? I really can't believe Intrepid doesn't have it included. It was worth the $100. What I packed in my duffle bag (including what I was wearing on the plane): 2 short sleeved shirts 2 long sleeved insect repelling shirts 1 sweatshirt 1 jacket 1 button down shirt to wear as a shirt of light jacket 1 bathing suit 2 jogger pants 1 Craghoppers stretchy insect repelling pants 1 dress ski hat waterbottle sunglasses clothesline insect repellant sunscreen stick shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bar MEDICINES!!!! toiletries underwear/socks camping towel A day pack to use during the day and haul back all the souvenirs. I used it as a carry on on my way back. Pro tip - start with 1 bag and expand into 2 on the return. I don't know about you but my stuff never seems to fit on the way back so I always have an extra bag with me. My most important item I bring on every trip - a scarf! I wore it as a scarf around my neck, a hat for warmth and sun, a bathing suit cover up, a towel, a picnic blanket, a blanket on the bus, a skirt in beach towns...get yourself a cheap scarf ladies. It's my best travel tip. **Make sure EVERYTHING you bring is quick drying I rented a sleeping bag on the trip and brought a liner with me, although I felt the bag was cleaned well and didn't really need it except for the added warmth in the southern countries. My one packing "splurge" was a really comfy small travel pillow.

Hello Laura – Thank you for taking the time to provide such a comprehensive and detailed review of your time on our Kenya to Vic Falls trip! We’re so glad to read that you had an amazing time exploring such a beautiful part of the world with us, we know there can be some long driving days, but with such vast landscapes you need to cover they’re unfortunately unavoidable. We hope you and your fellow travellers were able to use this time to get to know each other, take in the sights or catch up on some rest. Thank you for following the recommendation of packing light and adhering to the luggage limit, we find there’s always a handful of travellers who will miss this important piece of information, though if everyone brought full-sized luggage it would be a very tight squeeze. We currently have Rhino Tracking, Park Visit & San Rock Paintings in Matobo National Park as an optional activity as we often find that, after having already spent quite some time travelling, travellers like to have the option of spending the morning catching on some well-deserved rest. Thank you again for your feedback and for including your highlights, packing list and some amazing tips and trick to provide future travellers with an insight on what to expect. We hope to welcome you on a future Intrepid trip soon!

Our group of 8 paid over $1500 to do the Darwin, Kakadu, Litchfield and Berry Springs etc 4 day, 3 night tour. We were picked up in a troup carrier type bus that rattled and was very uncomfortable. We were made to prepare our own "picnic lunch" which consisted of salad sandwiches and made without any covid precautions whatsoever on dirty public tables. Dinner was prepared by our guide which was tasteless (stir fry chicken and gluggy rice). Fridges at the camp kitchens were absolutely filthy and we refused to eat food our of them or leave our drinks in them. No excuse for this seriously. The other 3 days were same and we were promised eggs and bacon on our last morning but were told "there was no gas". My husband offered to assist with the gas situation and was told to "mind his own business". The last night in Katherine we froze in our tents as we were only supplied with one sheet and one blanket. Temperature got down to 10c overnight. Tents were dusty and fans were noisy. For over $1500 each this trip is overpriced and underwhelming. I will never book a trip with Intrepid ever again!

Hello - Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, we're disappointed to hear about your experience and that the trip did not meet your expectations. Please do contact us directly at [email protected] with your booking details so we can look into this for you!

I paid in full when making a last-minute booking for a walking holiday on the Jurassic Coast. Intrepid then left me in the dark for almost two weeks without confirming my booking (no response to inquiries by e-mail and no useful information coming out of getting in touch via live chat). So even before it started, this holiday caused extra stress instead of rest and relaxation. Only after I filed a complaint with ABTA (and less than two weeks before the scheduled start of the trip) Intrepid finally got back to me informing me that they were not able to confirm my trip due to unavailability of the hotel (which was weird given that at that time the hotel specified on the invoice still had rooms available on Booking.com). This cancellation of my trip by the company was made more than three weeks ago, and I am still waiting for my refund. It is annoying and hard to believe that it takes them a month or who knows how long to process my refund, while my payment to them went through in just one minute. So not sure when I’ll finally get my money back but one thing is certain, I’ll never do any business with Intrepid again!

Hello - Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback, we’re very sorry your experience has not been as expected and we weren’t able to welcome you on our trip on the Jurassic Coast. We can see that our Customer Care team have reached out to you directly to discuss your experience further and work to restore your faith in Intrepid.

Disappointing tour - tour itinerary was too rushed and there was modifications on an almost daily basis - missed a lot of activities (even the included activities) due to being always late - the suppliers used were of poor quality (bordering on dangerous) - accomodation was really far away in most places (making it difficult to sightsee as no transport would travel out that way) - disconnect between people who make decisions on what the tour itinerary should be like and those running the tours (currently the tour does not work as advertised) - Useless tour guide (no information was given about places and activities)
