Jazz Is Dead To Celebrate 50 Years Of ‘Wake Of The Flood’ On January 2023 Tour

Jazz Is Dead  will have plenty to celebrate on its January 2023 tour, as the group marks its 25th anniversary as well as 50 years since the  Grateful Dead  released  Wake Of The Flood . The 15-date U.S. jaunt will see co-founder  Alphanso Johnson  (bass) joined by  Steve Kimock  (guitar),  Pete Lavezzoli  (drums), and  Bobby Lee Rodgers  (guitar).

The tour begins on the west coast with a foursome of California shows in Capistrano (1/10), Montclair (1/11), Agoura Hills (1/12), and finally San Francisco (1/13) before migrating eastward with stops in Denver (1/15) and Phoenix (1/17). Jazz Is Dead will then entertain the heartland with shows in Madison, WI (1/19); Des Plaines, IL (1/20); St. Charles, IL (1/21); and Cleveland, OH (1/22). Next, the ensemble will head to the east coast to wrap its January tour with shows in Boston (1/24); Glenside, PA (1/25); Tarrytown, NY (1/26); New York City (1/27); and finally Jim Thorpe, PA (1/28).

Each Jazz Is Dead show will see the group perform the Dead’s 1973 album Wake Of The Flood  in addition to other selections. The anniversary tour is somewhat cyclical, as Jazz Is Dead’s second of three albums—1999’s  Laughing Water —was an instrumental interpretation of  Wake Of The Flood . The run of shows will also mark a reunion for Johnson and Kimock who served together in the post- Jerry Garcia  Dead configuration The Other Ones in 2000.

Jazz is Dead  – The acclaimed All-Star instrumental ensemble, famous for interpretations of classic Grateful Dead songs with jazz influences, returns in 2023 to celebrate its 25 th Anniversary. Co-founder Alphonso Johnson will be joined by Steve Kimock, Pete Lavezzoli & Bobby Lee Rodgers, performing Grateful Dead’s ‘Wake of The Flood’ marking it’s 50 th Anniversary, in addition to other beloved selections. Jazz Is Dead XXV ‘reunites’ two greats! Steve Kimock & Alphonso Johnson, who together in heavyweight post-Garcia Grateful Dead offshoot The Other Ones together with Bob Weir, commanded the instrumental prowess of that band.

Formed in 1998 by bassist Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, Santana, Bobby & The Midnites, The Other Ones), drummer Billy Cobham (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Bobby & The Midnites), keyboardist T Lavitz (Dixie Dregs) & guitarist Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Widespread Panic), with drummers Rod Morgenstern (Dixie Dregs) & Jeff Sipe (Leftover Salmon) replacing Cobham in 1999, and guitarist Jeff Pevar (CSN, David Crosby CPR, Phil Lesh & Friends) replacing Herring in 2000, recorded 3 acclaimed albums, the second of which ‘Laughing Water’ in 1999 was in fact an instrumental ‘Wake of The Flood’ reinterpretation – so there is precedent. That album also featured Derek Trucks, Donna Jean Godchaux & Vassar Clements.

On  Laughing Water, the fusion ensemble Jazz Is Dead one-ups the band that it sets out to honor. Laughing Water is a superior remake of the Grateful Dead’s rather ordinary rock album Wake of the Flood. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a Deadhead to appreciate this album. Laughing Water not only fuses jam-rock with jazz, but it possesses a country-bluesy Americana flavor. The songs on Laughing Water are long and improvisational, but they seldom grow boring. From a purely technical standpoint, each musician in Jazz Is Dead is a superior player to his counterpart in the Grateful Dead. But unlike many pop-jazz remakes of rock albums, Laughing Water manages to capture the rock ‘n roll animus of the original. The communal carefree spirit of tie-died counter culturalism lives on in this music. Please don’t murder me if you think this review of the acclaimed jam-fusion band Jazz Is Dead runs hard to the gushy side. But even after all these years – more than 50 years of concert-going – I’m still a pretty impressionable guy (It’s true. . .) and it was only my first time seeing them.  So there was a lot to take in.

After a whirl-wind January tour covering 10 states and performing 16 shows, co-founder Alphonso Johnson will once again be joined by Steve Kimock, Pete Lavezzoli & Bobby Lee Rodgers.

THE THING festival returned to the historic Fort Worden of Port Townsend Washington after a three year hiatus. 'Fort Worden'-- the idyllic filming location for 'An Officer and a Gentleman'-- is presently a decommissioned Navy base that has been renovated into a college. Its sprawling parade grounds next to the ocean make a pretty location for a festival, and for those who camp, the nearby hillside is a picturesque campground with maritime views.

Sadly, I believe this is what most people think of when they think of jazz. A bunch of loud instruments trying to drive you mad through cacophony. This is unfortunate and the sentiment is misguided. Jazz, to me, is a concept about how music, especially “live” music, can be played. A concept that promotes a mostly unscripted, free flowing exchange of sounds and ideas. A formula that elevates originality over predictability. In other words, jazz is all about improvisation, spontaneity, and taking chances. Certainly, there are cases when the formula fails, but when the stars align, jazz can lead to most beautiful, meaningful, and redeeming music you will ever hear. It’s really an approach to music and spans a wide spectrum of the musical landscape, from bluegrass to rock n’ roll to the more textbook definition of jazz, including blues, bebop, and hardbop. Bands and artists – to name a few -that live or lived by this jazz ethos include Miles Davis, The Grateful Dead, John Coltrane, The Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Steve Kimock, and Phish.

Formed in the late 1990s after the passing of Dead guitarist and bandleader Jerry Garcia, Jazz is Dead featured the best cats out there including drummer Billy Cobham and the late keyboardist T. Lavitz. As the project evolved other tremendously talented players entered the picture to continue this strikingly singular idea.

The 2015 release of "Grateful Jazz", produced by Jeff Pevar , features world-renowed musicians such as Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs), Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles, CSN, Joe Cocker, Phil Lesh, etc…)  & Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, Santana, etc…). Jazz is Dead begins their U.S. Tour on August 2, 2015 in LA, ending after 16 shows back in California again at the well-known, Sausalito Arts Festival on September 5.

Progressive jam giants Umphrey's McGee‘s return to Las Vegas for the seventh installment of the massively popular UMBowl production was marked once again by a stand-out tour closing dual evening extravaganza where all stops were pulled out and the power given directly to the fans, for better or for worse.

On June 24, Round Records & ATO Records will release GarciaLive Volume Six: July 5, 1973 – Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, the latest installment of the celebrated GarciaLive archival series. The three-CD set was recorded at the 200 capacity Lion’s Share club formerly located in the small town of San Anselmo, CA, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.

Jazz Is Dead to Launch 25th Anniversary Tour in Los Angeles

Jazz is Dead–the acclaimed all-star instrumental ensemble famous for jazz-influenced interpretations of classic Grateful Dead songs–announced they’ll return with a tour to celebrate their 25th anniversary in January.

Co-founder Alphonso Johnson will be joined by Steve Kimock, Pete Lavezzoli and Bobby Lee Rodgers in performing Grateful Dead’s Wake of The Flood (marking the legendary album’s own 50th anniversary), in addition to other beloved selections from the Dead catalog.

Jazz Is Dead XXV will kick off with an appearance at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles’ Highland Park on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023–one of five shows tabbed for the Golden State–and is slated for 17 stops, including a Western swing and four Midwest dates. The highly renowned run will wrap in the Northeast at the tail end of January with performances in Boston and New York City.

The 25th Anniversary run, as well, reunites founding bassist Johnson with guitarist Kimock, both vets of the post-Grateful Dead outfit, The Other Ones.

Alphonso Johnson and Jazz Is Dead Announce Winter Tour

Jazz Is Dead has announced a new set of tour dates for 2023 that will begin a celebration of the Grateful Dead tribute act’s 25th anniversary. It will also coincide with the 50th anniversary of the album Wake of the Flood . As such, they’ll perform Dead tunes from that record as well as other favorites.

The current lineup of the band includes Steve Kimock, Bobby Lee Rodgers, Pete Lavezzoli, and Alphonso Johnson . The bassist, known for his work with everyone from Weather Report and Santana, co-founded the band in 1998. He also performed in Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir’s solo projects in the ’80s, as well as the Dead spinoff band The Other Ones.

Jazz is Dead will kick off with a string of dates in California before heading into the Midwest. After a week on the East Coast, they’ll wrap things up in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, on January 28th.
