Journey's End
Film details, brief synopsis, cast & crew, james whale, colin clive, ian maclaren, david manners, anthony bushell, billy bevan, technical specs.
The action unfolds in the confined area of a dugout on the Western Front. Stanhope, a British Army officer, shattered by the strain of 3 years' fighting, turns to liquor to bolster his courage. Osborne, his righthand man and a philosophical schoolmaster, tries to reassure young Raleigh, fresh from school, to the satisfaction of Stanhope, whom the boy optimistically worships as a college hero. Although Stanhope, who loves Raleigh's sister, resents the boy's presence, he is crushed by the boy's spirit and loyalty in battle. He confesses his own fears to Hibbert, a coward who feigns illness to avoid fighting; Osborne and Raleigh are selected to lead a raiding party on the German trenches, and Osborne calms the boy by quoting from Alice in Wonderland and talking of home. Many men, including Osborne, die in the raid, and Stanhope drowns his grief in drink; a rift develops between him and the boy until Raleigh is mortally wounded. Friendless and grief-stricken, he goes to face another furious attack. ...

Review by Mike Thorn
James Whale's first cinematic study of the veils we drape over hell to make it look like purgatory. So much of this film emphasizes tactics of distraction from horror: social codes, rituals, propriety, cooking and conversation, tobacco, alcohol. With an unusually restrained formal approach, Whale showcases his strong instincts for performance-focused filmmaking and tricky tonal maneuvers.
One year before playing the title character in Whale’s Frankenstein , Colin Clive delivers a devastating debut screen performance, a key element to the film’s power.
Generally, I have a bit of an allergy to war films, but this is something else.
Review by encyclo_Lydia ★★★★
Faithful adaptations of R.C. Sherriff’s trench play, with future Frankenstein Colin Clive and director James Whale brought over from the original West End production. Whale’s prior experience directing dialogue scenes for Hell’s Angels shows in the unobtrusive cinematography and editing. The most flashy it ever gets is a static camera taking in a close up of a sitting Clive, and then when he stands, framing his revolver.
I have a high tolerance for stagey movies where memorable characters speak in compelling monologues, so I think the limited set and simple presentation compliments the officers’ blinkered and comparatively privileged view of warfare, where they try to pass the time, support each other, and not fall apart as they’re served meals in…
Review by loureviews ★★★½
This film of the play by R C Sherriff may be a little bit slow when viewed these days, but the message of the piece remains powerful. It's a tract about the Great War and the futility of battle, and it remains heartbreaking.
In leading roles, Colin Clive and David Manners might not reach the heights of other actors of their time, but they do well enough, and director James Whale brings the piece to life - he had directed it, and Clive, on the UK stage.
Remade four decades later as 'Aces High', transposed from the trenches to the skies, this is the better of the two films.
Hard to see these days, and rarely screened, it is worth the effort to seek it out.
Review by SpaceCadetJuan ★★★½
81 Although it’s pretty clear this came from a stage play (it’s a total talkfest, 95% of which takes place inside a bunker) Whale makes an impressive “men in the trenches” character piece from limited resources. British soldiers pass the time and try not to go mad as they wait around for the next time they have to climb up and risk getting blown to bits. Colin Clive dominates the screen as a tortured officer trying to hold it together as the war drags on and he has to keep sending good men to die
Review by OxfordComma ★★★★½
I can't remember where I heard about this. Maybe it got mentioned in Gods and Monsters? Anyhow, it's a shame James Whale's film Journey's End isn't better known because even with a terrible print and sound, it's excellent.
The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because it's incredibly talky. Most of it takes place in some kind of trench location very near the front lines. Colin Clive plays the captain who's been there way too long and is hovering on the edge of a breakdown and David Manners plays a freshly minted lieutenant who knew him at school. Good cast all around actually.
Great use of tension and pacing and mood. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife and it feels believable. Some interesting queer subtextual stuff going on as well.
This definitely deserves a restoration and some attention.
Review by Dennis Delaney ★★★★
James Whale’s film adaptation of R.C. Sherriff’s hit play, Journey’s End, featured Colin Clive in the role of Captain Stanhope (which he had played in London when he’d replaced Laurence Olivier in the part), the anguished officer who has turned to alcohol as solace for the pressures of the trenches. The cast is filled out with a host of distinguished British players, including Ian Maclaren, David Manners, and Billy Bevan, and the movie, though stagey, is invaluable as a record of the original stage production. The story was retold several times, with German Heinz Paul directing a remake in 1931 titled Die andere Seite (The Other Side), Jack Gold transposing the story to a tale of aviators in Aces High (1976), and once again as Journey’s End (2017), another remake of the original play directed by Saul Dibb, with a starry cast including Sam Claflin, Asa Butterfield, Paul Bettany, Tom Sturridge, Toby Jones, and Stephen Graham.
Review by Bonnie Bell ★★★½
Blows my absolute mind that people insist that Whale never sprinkled his sexuality in his work. Have they even seen this????? It's his debut and it's coated in sneaky queer-coding.
Colin Clive delivers a masterwork of a performance in this one. Such a wonderful actor and so wildly under-appreciated.
Review by chloewoeeee ★★★
I will admit, I had to watch this film for one of my uni modules, and I am quite embarrassed I never knew it existed. A seminal text in the development of the war film, at least in my eyes, and the way in which we to this day remember and interpret the First World War. The realisation of the trench dugout as a space on camera, and the exploration of it as a central point around which the characters revolve and navigate the war is incredibly interesting and well carried off.
Despite rarely leaving the dugout, you never get bored. You never want to leave, you want to be with these men, supporting them, and trying to understand just…
Review by Carolyn_K ★★★★
A tragic same-sex love story. Almost unbearably sad in the final scene. Colin Clive really is unique in his day for the sort of neurotic portrayals of men on the edge. James Whale shows his mettle.
Review by Flickers in Time ★★★½
Colin Clive commands a unit stuck in the trenches of WWI France. He faces each days horrors with copious amounts of alcohol. David Manners, a schoolchum who idolized him, is coincidentally assigned to his command. Clive has no place to hide. It’s one day in the life of men who are about to face fire. OK but filmed like a stage play and at least 30 minutes too long.

Movie was watchable until Colin Clive came in, then it got good.
Review by dynamitegoat
I wish there was a better copy of this available, because it‘s a great war movie, capturing the mental and emotional toll of trench warfare without any of the shock-value gore or sappy nationalism of many later movies. There’s a lot going on here. The film takes pains to showcase all the ways in which these men attempt to distract themselves from actually feeling the horror of their predicament — from squabbling over food to pithy sarcasm to desperate alcoholism. The queer dynamic between the besotted Raleigh, the self-loathing Stanhope, and the knowing Osborne is rich and tragic and really straddles the line between text and subtext. Colin Clive’s performance in the final scene, full of sudden tenderness and repressed…

Review: ‘Journey’s End’ Returns a Play About World War I to the Screen
- Share full article
By Ben Kenigsberg
- March 15, 2018
The World War I drama “Journey’s End” is an old-fashioned movie from a well-worn source, the play by R.C. Sherriff, who fought in the war himself. The first movie version , directed by James Whale with Colin Clive, opened in 1930, a year before their immortal work in “Frankenstein.” The new film’s air of stodgy nobility resembles that of “The Four Feathers” (1939), one of many movies for which Mr. Sherriff wrote the screenplay.
The scene is 1918 in the north of France. British units take turns rotating into the front lines, where a German attack is imminent. A newcomer, Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), has pushed to serve under Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin), his sister’s sweetheart, danger notwithstanding. Osborne (Paul Bettany), a father figure in the company who insists that the men call him “uncle,” warns Raleigh that he’ll find the shell-shocked Stanhope changed.
If you felt “Dunkirk” lacked a sufficient human dimension, this slightly monotonous film puts that up front, as the troops wait in suspense, banter with the cook (Toby Jones) and plot strategy. The director, Saul Dibb, alternately embraces and hedges against the staginess, with sweeping camera movements through the trenches indebted to Stanley Kubrick’s “Paths of Glory.”
Yet early screen depictions of World War I, like “The Big Parade” and “All Quiet on the Western Front,” show more passion and visual invention. A rattling sound design and the cinematographer Laurie Rose’s excellent use of low light aren’t enough to make the experience immediate.
Rated R. Battle scars. Running time: 1 hour 47 minutes.

Journey’s End (1930)

R.C. Sherriff’s 1928 drama Journey’s End was based on his own experiences as an officer in WWI. It opened in London at the Apollo Theatre with James Whale directing and Laurence Olivier in the lead role. After two nights the production moved to another theatre though Colin Clive replaced Olivier who had taken a role in another play. By the end of 1929 the play was being produced around the world in English and 17 other languages. The film is James Whale’s debut as a film director and Colin Clive’s first screen appearance. Though a British production, it was filmed in Hollywood in order to take advantage of the new sound stages. The film’s theatrical origin is rather apparent as most of it takes place in an officer’s dugout and is mainly dialogue-driven. Colin’s performance as an alcoholic officer on the verge of a breakdown is somewhat overwrought. After this film both Whale and Clive remained in Hollywood and teamed up again the following year for Frankenstein . Like the character he plays in this film, Clive was a chronic alcoholic and died from complications of tuberculosis at age 37.
