Journey Essentials

This San Francisco band refined the power ballad and shot the concept into hyperspace. It's easy to see why “Don't Stop Believin'” and “Open Arms,” from their triumphant 1981 album, Escape, are staples of both high-school dances and sports teams: With sweeping piano, towering guitar, and Steve Perry's gravity-defying vocals, they're at once cries from the heart and rallying calls to the faithful. Journey get more gritty on gems like “Lights” and “Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin',” letting their blues-rock roots show through with edgy riffing, throbbing rhythms, and Perry's untethered wail.

Get organized with our road trip essentials checklist including gear recommendations and a printable packing list to ensure a smooth journey.

A blue sedan is pulled over on the side of a dirt road on a road trip. There are snowcapped mountains and pine trees in the distance.

There is an undeniable magic to a good road trip: the freedom of the open road, the opportunity to visit unparalleled sights, and the unique experiences that you stumble upon along the way. However, creating these unforgettable moments requires effective planning and smart packing of the right road trip essentials.

At Bearfoot Theory, we’ve gone on our fair share of road trips and experimented with a plethora of gear – some items have worked well and others not so much. We know that packing for a road trip can easily turn into a stressful part of your journey if organization isn’t your forte – there’s nothing quite as disheartening as realizing you’ve left something important behind.

In this post, we’re excited to share our top selection of road trip gear that will help you optimize your road adventure to its fullest. You won’t need a tricked-out van or struggle with a daily game of Tetris trying to fit everything into your trunk. Road Trip Navigational Tools

While part of the fun of a good road trip might be getting lost and exploring remote back roads, it is crucial to have reliable navigational tools so you don’t end up utterly lost.

Here are our recommendations for road trip maps and apps:

Paper Map or Atlas

Although we all know Google Maps is essential for directions, I persoanlly like carrying a paper map too. Plus, hopefully some of your itinerary will take you off the grid and out of cell phone service.

For that reason, you’ll want to carry a paper map or road atlas. Paper maps are also better than phone apps for telling the difference between a well-graded gravel road and a gnarly 4×4 road.

My favorite paper maps are the Benchmark Road and Recreation Atlases which also detail public lands, camping areas, National Parks, and more.

Shop Benchmark Road and Recreation Atlases at:

A GPS is handy for navigation when you don’t have cell service. If you don’t want to purchase a GPS, download Google Maps for offline use or use the app maps.me instead. This is a helpful free app that you can use to navigate and find sights and amenities even without cell service.

Just be sure to download the maps.me map for the region you’re going to be traveling in ahead of time so that it will work offline.

Still in the planning phase of your trip? Check out our road trip destination ideas here! And if you’re looking for a car camping checklist, head to our Car Camping Essentials blog post .

Road Trip Apps

Downloading a couple of apps before you head out will make road trip planning easier and will help you find things you’re looking for on the road like campsites, rest stops, amenities, and more.

The Roadtrippers App is a handy one too. It lets you save locations on the go, find destination points along your route, and locate lodging, gas, restaurants, and more.

The iExit App can help you determine the best areas to take a pit stop on major highways while you’re traveling.

Gas Buddy is a helpful road trip app that will help you find the cheapest gas prices so you aren’t wasting money when you fill up.

#1 campsite finder app

Road Trip Clothing, Footwear, & Accessories

Packing for a road trip means filling your bags with versatile, well-fitting, and durable clothes that allow you to do a little bit of everything.

You’ll want to have clothing, footwear, and accessories that:

While crazy patterns can be fun, I prefer to pack solid prints that will go with everything. That way, you don’t have to really think about packing specific outfits.

Here are a few of my favorite road trip essentials picks for clothing, footwear, and accessories. For more recommendations, check out the links below.

Road Trip Packing Lists

Road trip entertainment packing list.

Road trips are all about having a good time, right? Right. Make the drive fun with the following entertainment essentials. I also recommend keeping your day hiking essentials in your trunk too so you’re always ready for a spur-of-the-moment hike, should you need them.

Music Playlists

What’s a road trip without music? A good playlist will keep your energy up and will help the miles fly by. Load up your phone with plenty of tunes ahead of time in case you’ll be driving through areas with limited service. I’m a HUGE fan of Spotify.

Podcasts & Audiobooks

If music isn’t your thing or you need a break from rockin’ out, download a couple of audiobooks or a bunch of episodes of your favorite podcasts.

For suggestions, check out our favorite outdoor podcasts . The Libby App and Audible are also great resources for downloading audiobooks.

A book or two is always nice to have along on a road trip so you can read in your downtime.

We often like to bring books about the places we’re exploring so we can learn about the area while traveling.

Travel Games

If you’re traveling with kids, games are a great way to keep everyone happy and entertained.

But games aren’t just for kids! Bringing along a deck of cards or your favorite road trip games provides fun for everyone.

A set of headphones or AirPods are nice to bring on a road trip in case you need a little alone time.

Bring a camera to capture the memories on your trip and check out our photography page for tips and tricks for taking great photos.

Not everyone enjoys journaling or sketching, but a notebook is nice to bring along on a road trip for those who want to record their trip.

If you like to journal or make notes about the places you travel to, pack a small weatherproof notebook .

Shop Rite in the Rain Notebook at:

iPad/Laptop

An iPad or laptop is nice to have along for evenings when you just want to Netflix and chill. Download a few movies ahead of time for easy viewing.

Road Trip Snacks & Kitchen Packing List

One of the best parts about a road trip is tasty road trip snacks, wouldn’t you agree? Whether you’re a salty or sweet person, having quick and (mostly) healthy snack options can make or break a long drive.

It’s also a good idea to pack some kitchen and cooking gear even if you’re not camping so you can whip up that impromptu picnic.

Here are our road trip snack and kitchen essentials:

Healthy Snacks

Having healthy snacks easily accessible will stop the hanger from creeping in and help you avoid gas station temptations like chips and candy (no judgment though if you want to indulge!)

Some of our favorite road trip snacks are:

Planning on doing some hiking during your road trip? Don’t forget your favorite hiking snacks (which TBH, I also eat while driving!).

A cooler will keep your fruit, veggies, dips, and other snacks cold so you can eat fresh on the road.

If you’re just packing a few cold drinks and snacks, a small, lightweight cooler like REI’s Cool Haul 24 Soft Cooler is a versatile option.

Shop REI Cool Haul 23 Soft Cooler at:

Reusable Water Bottle

A reusable water bottle is key for staying hydrated and eliminating single-use plastics.

An insulated Hydro Flask will keep your water nice and cold on hot days. I also like their straw lid version which allows you to easily drink one-handed while you drive.

In addition to saving money and avoiding plastic bottles, having a water jug with you makes for a quick and easy fill-up of your water bottle while on the road and before heading out on a hike. It’s also a smart thing to have in case you break down or run out of gas.

The GSI Outdoors Folding Water Cube holds 15 liters of water and has a convenient tap handle that prevents spilling.

Shop the GSI Water Cube at:

Consider bringing an insulated coffee mug for keeping coffee and tea hot on sunrise drives or making sure your beverage stays cold on hot days.

Shop the Hydro Flask 20 oz Tumbler at:

Muli Tool/ Swiss Army Knife

A multi-tool or versatile knife like this Swiss Army Camper Knife is always good to have along, whether for slicing apples, cutting rope, or opening that nice bottle of wine.

Saying no to single-use plastics is easy when you have a reusable utensil set with you.

This To-Go Ware Bamboo Utensil Set comes in a handy holder and is perfect for on-the-go meals whether you’re road-tripping or not. It comes with a fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks, and a bamboo straw.

Packing & Organizing Road Trip Essentials

Keep your stuff organized and easy to find with these road trip packing essentials.

Suitcase, Backpack, or Duffel Bag

You likely already have a suitcase, backpack, or duffel bag at home that you can use to pack for your road trip, it doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just something to comfortably hold your clothes and other belongings.

If you don’t own one already, we love the REI Co-op Roadtripper Duffel .

Shop the REI Roadtripper Duffel at:

A day pack for hikes and other outings is always good to bring on a road trip. It doesn’t have to be big, just big enough to hold water, your phone, camera, keys, snacks, and other hiking essentials.

This Osprey Tempest pack has been my go-to for day hikes and adventures for a long time. The Osprey Talon is the men’s version.

Shop the Osprey Tempest Pack at:

Packing Cubes

If you’re like me, your suitcase (or duffel) can be a disaster. I tackle this problem by using packing cubes to keep all of my clothing organized while I’m road-tripping. Underwear in one. Socks in another. Pants. Shirts. Each category of clothing gets its own cube.

Shop REI Packing Cubes at:

Toiletry Bag

Having all your toiletries and smaller essentials in one bag makes it easy to find them when you need them.

This REI Co-op Shower Roll Bag is a favorite that makes it super easy to access all your toiletries in one place.

It’s also handy in case you find an exposed viewpoint you want to picnic at or a sunny hike along the way.

You’ll want a way to tame that windswept hair after a long drive, so throw your hairbrush in with your other personal items.

Shop travel-sized hairbrush at:

Bandanas can be used in many ways and is sure to come in handy, whether as a napkin or as a headband t keep your hair from blowing in the wind when you’ve got the windows down.

The Nomadix Bandana Towel adds even more versatility with its absorbent microsuede material, SPF 50 protection, and anti-odor properties.

Shop the Nomadix Bandana Towel at:

Sometimes it’s nice to freshen up after a long drive, or maybe you’re hiking and camping on your road trip as well. A pack of wipes is always on our road trip packing list so we have the option to clean up a bit in a pinch.

The  Sea to Summit Wilderness Wipes  are our favorite because they’re gentle on the skin and they are compostable (although you still need to dispose of them properly in the trash).

Shop Sea to Summit Wilderness Wipes at:

Miscellaneous Road Trip Essentials

These items are necessarily ‘essentials’ but they can make your road trip more comfortable and trouble-free.

I don’t know about you, but I consider a pillow a road trip essential (especially if you’re the passenger)!

Bring a comfy pillow from home or an inflatable pillow if you’re short on space. This NEMO Fillo Pillow is compressible, lightweight, and awesome for camping, backpacking, and napping in the passenger seat.

Shop the NEMO Fillo Pillow at:

Whether you’re reading in bed, going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, or rummaging around your car, you’ll want a headlamp nearby.

The BioLite Headlamp 325 is a go-to piece of nighttime gear that’s ultralight and rechargeable with a USB cable.

A small blanket is a nice item to have along in case you find the perfect picnic spot or if you just need a little extra warmth at any point on your road trip.

We love Rumpl’s cozy, packable blankets – they won’t take up much space in your car and they come in all kinds of fun colors and patterns.

Shop Rumpl Blankets at:

Quick-dry towel

Be ready for those impromptu swimming hole dips with a lightweight, quick-dry towel like the Nomadix Original Towel . It’s also sand resistant, so if you’re heading to the beach, you don’t have to worry about tracking loads of sand back to your car.

Shop Nomadix Towels at:

First-Aid Kit

Stay safe and be prepared in case of an emergency by having a car first aid kit that has been personalized to your own medical needs.

This  My Medic MyFAK First Aid Kit  is equipped with all kinds of expert-picked first aid and trauma supplies. You can strap it to the back of a headrest for easy storage or just toss it in the back so it’s there when you need it.

We love that it comes with a small tearaway pouch that you can fill up with essentials and take on day hikes, backpacking trips, and other short adventures as well.

It’s more expensive than some other first aid kits, but it also has more supplies and lifesaving equipment than most.

Shop the My Medic MyFAK at:

Phone Charger & USB Cord

You’ll be surprised how quickly your phone battery will drain when using navigation mode and a variety of apps on your phone so it’s good to be able to charge from your vehicle.

If your headlamp and camera come with car-compatible chargers, bring those along too.

GPS Communication Device

I’d argue that the Garmin InReach is a road trip essential if you plan on exploring remote backroads where there is no cell phone service.

If you break down somewhere, the Garmin InReach allows you to send custom text messages no matter where you are or to call for medical help if you are in an emergency situation.

It also has a GPS and some helpful navigation tools for when the navigation apps on your phone won’t load.

My boyfriend Ryan is a Type 1 Diabetic, so when we are in the van or hiking, the Garmin InReach gives me added peace of mind.

Shop the Garmin inReach Mini at:

It’s always handy to have a little bit of cash on hand in case you come across a farmers market or a roadside stall or if you plan on camping at more remote campgrounds, which are typically cash-only.

Vehicle Road Trip Essentials

I won’t go into too much detail in this section because you should really have these basic necessities in your vehicle at all times, whether you’re road-tripping or not.

These include:

  • Driver’s License and Registration

Thanks for sharing such a great checklist, I Believe anyone who read this post will be valuable for him for sure. Regards, Team Yugo.pk

I love these lists! As busy as a work week can get, lists like this will help get me outside sooner and more often. I think it would be great if you had a PDF document in the form of a checklist, so I could gather items on the fly and know that I have them ready or loaded into the car/truck/van/camper. Just an idea for this page and great lists.

I like your advice about bringing a spare tire and knowing how to change should be part of the road trip necessities. We won’t know what would happen to us on the road during our trip. One possible problem that might arise would be a flat tire. Having a spare tire will allow us to change it immediately. However, if you’re not capable of doing it on your own you can call someone to assist you. This happened to me a few years ago, good thing I keep the contact details of my roadside assistance service provider which responded to my call immediately. Having this will lessen our worries. You might want to check the blog I’ve read a few weeks ago which provides a list of tips on handling a road trip like a pro. here is the link: https://blog.beepbeep.ph/road-trip-essentials/

I found your article interesting to read the must haves list for the road trip. There are lots of thing which I never remember to bring with me on the road trip. Thank for sharing these checklist.

What a great, comprehensive list. You can also add roadside assistance, it can be a lifesaver when we broke down 9 days into our trip. Loved the roadtrippers app as well. However, we made the rookie mistake of not getting a gas card until halfway through.

What do you normally have in your First-Aid Kit? We are crafting a blog post on our blog and we would definitely mention your website in it.

Its Nice., Thank you for your Necessity guides. These are useful to many.

Great checklist! One addition that we were glad to have on our recent road trip was our checkbook. During the Covid era, we prefer not to handle cash, and some campgrounds didn’t take cards, but writing a check and leaving it in the envelope worked great.

That’s a great tip, thanks Tom!

These modules are all great Lots of information and quite a few things i wouldn’t ever have thought of. However, why do i need to resubscribe every time i want one of your checklists? Seems like there one subscription should “do” and there should be a place i can just download what i want.

After requesting 3 or 4, it now tells me my request is successful but wont sent the mail with the download link.

This is irritating for me and would seem to create lot of duplicate ‘subscriptions” for you.

Hi Linda! Thanks for sharing that with us and our apologies for the inconvenience. There’s not a straightforward solution to this unfortunately as it would require us building out some sort of a membership page where people can login and download all the resources they want. At this time the way we have it set up is the easiest way for our readers to get the specific resources they want delivered to their inbox. It doesn’t result in duplicate subscriptions on our end as your email address is only added to our list once, and I am seeing that the emails for the checklists you’ve requested have been sent. Perhaps check your spam folder or try doing a search for Bearfoot Theory? If you’re still having issues please email me at contact (at) bearfoottheory.com and I’ll help get this resolved personally. Thanks again – we’ll keep your feedback in mind and will see if there’s a way we can improve this process 🙂

thank you, it was very helpful.

A night hike, river tubing, or secret single-track – you never know what adventure may arise while traveling. Don’t miss out because you don’t have the gear. Below are gear staples for us on any adventure:

Rain jacket Daypack Headlamp Water bottle Compass Swimsuit Dry bag (waterproof) Bandana or Buff headwear

Great list – you never know what adventure you could find yourself on!

Thanks for your wonderful work! Fun and practical — a breath of fresh air!

I’d like to add two items that simplify and improve road trips for us:

— A small (maybe 8-inch square) “front-seat bin” for each traveller. Keep your small personal items — sunglasses, reading glasses, snacks, medicines, phone, and so — on in one designated place to ensure that you don’t have to root around to find your things.

— Small waterproof duffle for each person’s shoes — hiking shoes, sandals, comfy campsite shoes. Keeps the car cleaner and, again, ensures that things are “where they’re supposed to be”!

Hi Roy, these are great suggestions! We love tips for staying organized. Thanks for sharing!

Must-have travel essentials: the ultimate packing guide written by a travel blogger.

Looking for the must-have travel essentials to help pack for a trip? I got you covered! Overpacking is a problem many people deal with when getting ready for a trip. It can be overwhelming to narrow down the necessities. Whether you’re heading out for a short weekend trip or embarking on a long-haul flight, having a well-curated list of must-have travel essentials can make all the difference. It’s important to bring along the essentials that will make your journey comfortable and stress-free.

Being the avid traveler that I am, I have perfected my vacation packing list with items that will make your life much easier when traveling. Forget overpacking and let’s get streamlined for your next destination. From luggage and travel accessories to clothing and toiletries, this guide will cover everything you need to know to make the most out of your travels. So you can be well-equipped with must-have travel essentials to hop on that flight and be prepared!

Best Carry-On Luggage

carry on pro plus monos travel

As a travel blogger, I am constantly on the go. When it comes to the dilemma of “to carry on or to not carry on” I always choose the latter. Who wants to deal with the drama of missing luggage? Not I! That’s why I always bring a carry-on suitcase (as well as a checked one because a girl needs her options).

I couldn’t recommend the Monos Carry-on Pro more. One of the best travel items to invest in. Monos has sleek carry-on luggage equipped with loads of interior pockets to help keep you organized on the go. They also include a lifetime warranty when purchasing so you can ensure you’ll have this suitcase for years to come. For my friends on a budget, consider this affordable Amazon version that has great reviews.

Best Checked Luggage

When choosing checked luggage, it’s important to pick a sturdy suitcase that’s easy to maneuver and has enough space for all your essentials. I would love to be the type of traveler to only bring a carry-on but I need options. This Monos large check-in is a literal lifesaver on long journey travels.

I packed 2.5 weeks of a Fall Europe adventure into this one suitcase alone. It has an unbreakable shell and ample compartments and zipper pockets to keep you organized while you’re on the go. The wheels are 360 degrees and are extremely quiet when barrelling through airports. Finally, if you’re on a budget consider this Amazon Checked Bag .

Best Travel Bags for Every Type of Traveler

Travel tote.

A travel tote is a great addition to your packing list and will help carry those extra items that didn’t fit in a carry-on. A good travel tote should be sturdy, spacious, and lightweight, with multiple compartments to help you stay organized. I love this Tote from BEIS because it’s so versatile and it goes with everything. It also has an insert that fits on your suitcase handle and a crossbody strap. All the options! Finally, it allows you to keep your essentials close at hand and provides a convenient way to stay organized on the go. For my friends on a budget consider this Amazon Travel Tote .

PRO TRAVEL TIP: Don’t pack out the tote before leaving. The reason is you’ll never know what you’ll pick up on your travels so leave space for a few souvenirs.

Travel Backpack

If you’re traveling from city to city with multiple stops then a travel backpack is the way to go! Don’t get me wrong, traveling with a tote is chicer however traveling with a backpack is more comfortable. Especially for long travel journeys. I use a backpack on most trips and have loved this Lululemon Backpack for years. It fits way more than you would expect it to! I’m able to fit my cosmetic hanging case, a Canon camera, an extra lens, my laptop, a baseball cap, and my AirPod Max headphones. All in this one bag. Don’t underestimate this backpack! For a more affordable option check out this one from Amazon .

Travel Weekender

If you need more space than a tote or a backpack then pick up this Weekender Bag . This weekend bag from Beis is great because it not only fits under the seat but is made of cloth fabric which makes it super durable. Along with that, it has a padded laptop pocket and a zippered shoe pocket at the bottom to bring that extra pair (because we always need that extra pair right ladies?). No lie, you can fit 3 pairs of shoes on the bottom of this bag. It’s incredible for space saving! Finally, check out this budget-friendly Amazon Weekend Bag .

Must-Have Travel Essentials Gear

Best packing cubes.

If you have never packed with packing cubes before, I urge you to try (and then thank me later). When packing, using packing cubes not only help with organization, but you can simply transport the cubes from your suitcase to a hotel dresser with much ease. Unpacking while on a trip has never been easier! Finally, if you’re traveling with your significant other, the hack is to purchase two sets (two different colors). This keeps us organized and easily distinguishes which cubes are whose. Finally, I’ve been using packing cubes for years now and can not leave home without them!

Beis Packing Cube Set

Amazon Packing Cube Set

Travel Containers for Liquids

Who wants to lug full-size beauty products on a trip? Not me! When purchasing travel containers it’s the perfect way to save space. I swear by these Amazon travel containers . They come in a pack of 4 with a bag for only $12. Talk about a steal! I’ve been on countless trips and so far there has been no spillage. It’s not easy to find containers that don’t leak. Finally, you’re feeling like you want to be extra cautious consider using a plastic bag to cover the opening of the container after you fill it. Then twist the top on top of the bag.

Cosmetic Case

Having all of your cosmetics in one place is the only way to do it when traveling, ladies. Who wants to scramble to find their moisturizer when you have a new destination to explore? By purchasing a roomy cosmetic case you are saving time by digging through that pack. This case fits all of my makeup and skincare items needed and the hanging option is a great option to have. Finally, I can fit this exact case in my travel backpack with lots of room to spare.

Travel Portable Charger

Nothing is worse than running out of phone battery while you’re in a foreign city or even traveling domestically. Do yourself a favor and purchase this portable battery charger so you never have to worry. This rechargeable power bank is my go-to comes in a pack of two so you never run out of juice. Furthermore, it charges your phone fast so you can continue on your journey with a full battery.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

These are my most used items when on a long flight. Nobody wants to hear babies crying or loud people amid conversation when on a long flight. The worst is when someone chooses to watch their phone without headphones cue the eye roll. Do yourself a favor and get these AirPod Max Noise Cancelling headphones so you can sit back and relax. I have had these for a year now and nothing has made my travels more stress-free. You literally cannot hear anything with these on. Finally, for a less expensive version, albeit with similar qualities, check this Amazon pair out !

AirFly Adapter

When traveling, I don’t like to use the headphones that the airlines give out. For many reasons. One they’re not noise canceling and two the output is so old. Since we are now in the 21st century there is an AirFly adapter that I just started using recently. This allows you to plug into the screen on your seat and listen with your headphones. Such a game changer when traveling with others too because there are two outputs. This means your partner and you can watch the movie together.

Travel Water Bottle

Don’t spend money on overpriced plastic water bottles at the airport. Instead, bring your reusable one. One of the best useful travel tips out there. Every airport has filtered fountains that are free to fill up your water. It’s so important to hydrate when traveling so you can arrive at your destination refreshed. But don’t forget to make sure it’s empty before going through security. Finally, for the exact collapsible water bottle I use, pick up this Amazon water bottle that’s perfect for extra space-saving.

Travel Wrap

One of my most used essentials for travel is a cashmere wrap. It can serve many purposes on a long-haul flight. You can wear it as a scarf, roll it up to use it as a pillow, or simply wrap yourself up in a cozy blanket when the cabin gets chilly (which it always does. let’s be real). This cashmere wrap is a bit of a splurge (think investment piece) but you’ll have it for years to come! I included a more affordable option from Amazon as well.

Silk Eye Mask

A silk eye mask is a must-have travel accessory that can make a big difference in the quality of your sleep when you’re on the go. When traveling, it’s not always easy to get a good night’s sleep. Whether you’re on a long-haul flight or staying in a hotel room with unfamiliar surroundings. A silk eye mask can help block out light and create a soothing environment for better sleep.

In addition to helping you get better sleep, silk eye masks can also provide a range of other benefits when traveling. They can help alleviate dry eyes and prevent puffiness, as well as provide a sense of privacy and relaxation in crowded or noisy environments.

Travel Adapter

If you have ever traveled abroad and were not able to use your curling iron, I feel for you! The electrical outlets in Europe use a different voltage and plug shape than those in North America, which means that if you plug in a device without an adapter, it could get damaged. When traveling to other countries it’s always smart to bring a travel adapter so you can use your electronics with no issue. Finally, we have this Amazon Adapter that has 4 international adapters for multiple countries.

A Straw Hat (Spring/Summer)

Packing a hat is high on the travel essentials list, especially when traveling to warm weather climates. If you want to lay by the pool and protect that precious face or just sightsee and stay nice and cool – make sure to pack a hat! I love my Brixton fedora so much that I own it in 3 colors. Packing Tip: pack the top of the hat with clothing and then surround the hat in your suitcase with soft clothing so it doesn’t bend.

Baseball Cap or Beanie (Fall/Winter)

For colder weather climates I always have a beanie or baseball cap on hand. For multiple reasons. One of which is that if my hair is greasy from traveling long days I can throw it on and look put together.

For trips where I’m active and outdoors, I always pack my oversized visor . It protects my face from the sun and I don’t have to worry about ruining it because it was only $17. Sure it may be a little dorky but your girl is a skincare queen so I’d rather that than get sun on my face when being outdoors all day.

Face Moisturizer

Being on a plane for multiple hours can dry anyone out. Don’t arrive at your destination with dry skin! Instead, use this Kiehl moisturizer to keep your skin looking nice and refreshed. I don’t leave home without it, especially when traveling.

Disinfectant Wipes + Hand Sanitizer

One word: Coronavirus. Let’s not forget 2020, the year that took the travel industry by storm. One of the most essential travel items is disinfectant wipes. When traveling it’s best to wipe your entire seat, TV, window, and tray table with disinfectant wipes BEFORE sitting down. I’m also linking my favorite shields for those who want extra protection.

Warm-weather or not, outside or inside, sunscreen is a necessity that everyone needs to use daily. For face sunscreen, I couldn’t recommend Elta MD more. You want to make sure you are always using broad-spectrum sunscreen because it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Elta MD is a dermatologist approved and ever since I started using it, I have never broken out. It’s my holy grail skincare item and if I could only pick a few essentials for travel, this would be top of my list!

Sunscreen Brush

Ok, this sunscreen brush is my new favorite item! When traveling, I tend to have a full face of makeup, and reapplying sunscreen in the middle of the day is tough when you are wearing makeup. Cue the SuperGoop sunscreen brush , the easiest way to re-apply sunscreen on the go. It’s truly a lifesaver and has come in handy during my recent travels.

Another travel packing list to check off is lip balm. Unfortunately, many people suffer from chapped lips when there is a climate change. This Summer Friday Lip Balm is the best for chapped lips. It goes on so smoothly and is not sticky like most other lip balms.

Body Lotion

Ladies, how much do you spend on skincare products? Now ask yourself, how much do you spend on body products? If you are like me, you would pick up whatever lotion was on sale at Target. But let me tell you when I started using Necessaire products the skin on my body never looked better! Not only does this lotion have niacinamide in it but it’s fragrance-free and it’s a must when packing my bags. You can shop for all the goods here .

Travel Card

If you are an avid traveler then one of the best travel products to invest in is a travel card. You can receive many perks such as free upgrades, free flights, and even a companion certificate so your companion can fly for free once a year (within the US). I use the American Express Delta card for everything and we use our miles to book flights quite often. Last year my husband and I flew to Europe and back for $100. It has an annual fee of $250 and you receive tons of benefits. If you use my Amex referral code you can currently get 50,000 bonus miles signing up!

Must-Have Travel Essentials Checklist

Below I covered the ultimate trip packing list for you to check off before your flight. Screenshot this travel packing checklist to help you plan:

Best Packing Tips from a Travel Blogger

Over the past 10 years, I have learned quite a few packing tips. I’m spilling the tea below!

  • Use packing cubes! It’s the best way to organize and save space and time while traveling
  • Roll your dresses altogether. Start by laying them all flat on top of each other and fold in the corners then roll and pack in a packing cube. You will save so much space
  • The same can be applied to tops
  • Pack socks and accessories inside your shoes
  • Consider travel compression bags for heavier items. I use these when I travel in the fall/winter to pack sweaters and I’m always pleasantly surprised by how well they work
  • If you’re not using a travel-safe container then use plastic wrap underneath the caps of your toiletry items

Well, there you have it. If you use this “Must Have Travel Essentials Packing List”, you will be more than prepared! Thanks for reading this must-have travel essentials post and check out more of my travel guides !

“ Journey Essentials: Your Guide to Safe and Unforgettable Adventures”

Are you planning a trip? Whether you're going on a weekend getaway or embarking on a long-term adventure, packing can be a stressful task. But fear not! We've got you covered with some expert tips for stress-free travel. In this article, we'll share essential packing hacks that will help you pack efficiently and ensure a safe and memorable journey.

First and foremost, it's important to make a packing list. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don't forget any important items. Start by considering the climate and activities you'll be engaging in during your trip. Pack clothes that are versatile and can be mixed and matched. Opt for lightweight and wrinkle-resistant fabrics to save space and avoid the hassle of ironing.

When it comes to toiletries, it's best to pack travel-sized items to save space and comply with airline regulations. Invest in a good toiletry bag with compartments to keep everything organized and prevent leaks. Don't forget to pack essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, and any medications you may need. It's also a good idea to bring a small first aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and any other necessary medications.

Another essential item for stress-free travel is a good travel adapter. Different countries have different plug types, so having a universal adapter will ensure that you can charge your electronic devices wherever you go. It's also a good idea to bring a power bank to keep your devices charged on the go.

When it comes to packing clothes, rolling them instead of folding can save a lot of space in your suitcase. This technique also helps prevent wrinkles. Use packing cubes or compression bags to further maximize space and keep your clothes organized. Don't forget to pack a few plastic bags for dirty laundry or wet items.

Now let's talk about footwear. Shoes can take up a lot of space in your suitcase, so it's important to choose wisely. Opt for versatile shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits. It's also a good idea to wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane to save space in your luggage.

When it comes to electronics, it's important to protect them from damage. Invest in a good padded case for your laptop or tablet. Use cable organizers to keep your cords tangle-free and prevent them from getting damaged. It's also a good idea to make digital copies of important documents like your passport and travel insurance. Store them in a secure cloud storage service or email them to yourself.

Lastly, don't forget to pack a reusable water bottle. Staying hydrated is essential during your travels , and having a reusable bottle will save you money and reduce plastic waste. It's also a good idea to bring a travel-sized umbrella or a lightweight rain jacket, depending on the weather conditions of your destination.

In conclusion, packing for a trip doesn't have to be a stressful task. By following these essential packing hacks, you can ensure a stress-free and memorable journey. Remember to make a packing list, choose versatile clothing, invest in travel-sized toiletries, and protect your electronics. With these tips in mind, you'll be well-prepared for your next adventure. Happy travels!

Journey Essentials: Expert Tips for Safe and Memorable Travels

First and foremost, it's crucial to do your research before you even set foot on your destination. Familiarize yourself with the local customs, laws, and regulations to avoid any unnecessary trouble. Understanding the cultural norms will not only help you blend in better but also prevent you from inadvertently offending anyone. Additionally, make sure to check the travel advisories issued by your government for any potential risks or security concerns in the area you plan to visit.

When it comes to packing, less is often more. Avoid carrying excessive amounts of cash or valuable items that may attract unwanted attention. Instead, opt for a money belt or a secure travel wallet to keep your essentials safe and easily accessible. It's also a good idea to make copies of important documents such as your passport, identification cards, and travel insurance, and keep them separate from the originals. This way, if anything gets lost or stolen, you'll have backup copies to facilitate the process of replacing them.

While exploring a new place, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and let your guard down. However, it's crucial to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times. Be cautious of pickpockets and keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas or public transportation. Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics that may make you a target for theft. If you're unsure about the safety of a particular neighborhood or area, don't hesitate to ask locals or hotel staff for advice.

Another important aspect of travel safety is transportation. Whether you're using public transportation or renting a car, it's essential to prioritize your well-being. If you're taking a taxi, make sure to use licensed and reputable companies. If possible, arrange for transportation in advance to avoid getting into unmarked or unofficial vehicles. When renting a car, familiarize yourself with the local traffic rules and regulations, and always wear your seatbelt. If you're traveling by public transportation, keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious of any suspicious individuals.

In case of an emergency, it's crucial to have a plan in place. Make sure to have the contact information for your country's embassy or consulate readily available. It's also a good idea to register with your embassy before traveling, so they can reach out to you in case of any emergencies or natural disasters. Additionally, consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. This will provide you with peace of mind and financial protection should anything unexpected occur during your journey.

Lastly, don't forget to trust your instincts. If something feels off or unsafe, it's better to err on the side of caution. Avoid risky situations and listen to your gut feelings. Remember, your safety should always be your top priority, and taking a few extra precautions can make all the difference in ensuring a secure and memorable journey.

In conclusion, traveling can be an incredible adventure, but it's important to prioritize safety. By doing your research, packing smartly, staying vigilant, and being prepared for emergencies, you can ensure a secure and memorable journey. So go ahead, explore the world, and create unforgettable memories while keeping yourself safe along the way.

Traveling can be an exciting and enriching experience, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming at times. To ensure a safe and memorable journey, it's important to have the right travel accessories that enhance comfort and convenience. In this article, we will share expert tips on must-have travel accessories that will make your trip more enjoyable.

One of the most essential travel accessories is a good quality travel pillow. Long flights or train rides can be exhausting, and having a comfortable pillow can make all the difference in getting some much-needed rest. Look for a pillow that provides adequate neck and head support, and is compact enough to fit in your carry-on bag.

Another must-have accessory is a portable charger. In today's digital age, we rely heavily on our smartphones and other electronic devices for navigation, communication, and entertainment. Having a portable charger ensures that you never run out of battery power, especially during long layovers or when you're exploring a new city. Look for a charger that is lightweight, has multiple USB ports, and offers fast charging capabilities.

A travel adapter is also an essential accessory, especially if you're traveling to a different country with different electrical outlets. It allows you to charge your devices and use your electronics without any hassle. Look for an adapter that is compatible with multiple plug types and has built-in surge protection to keep your devices safe.

To keep your belongings organized and easily accessible, invest in a good quality travel organizer or packing cubes. These handy accessories help maximize space in your luggage and keep your clothes and other items neatly packed. Look for organizers with multiple compartments and zippered pockets for easy organization.

If you're a frequent traveler, investing in a reliable luggage lock is a wise choice. It adds an extra layer of security to your belongings and gives you peace of mind while traveling. Look for a lock that is TSA-approved, as it allows security personnel to open and inspect your luggage without damaging the lock.

For those who enjoy capturing memories through photography, a portable tripod is a must-have accessory. It allows you to take steady and high-quality photos, even in low light conditions. Look for a tripod that is lightweight, compact, and easy to set up.

To stay hydrated during your travels, a reusable water bottle is essential. It not only helps reduce plastic waste but also saves you money on buying bottled water. Look for a bottle that is leak-proof, BPA-free, and has a wide mouth for easy filling and cleaning.

Lastly, don't forget to pack a universal travel toiletry bag. This compact bag is perfect for storing your toiletries and keeping them organized. Look for a bag that is waterproof, has multiple compartments, and is TSA-approved for carrying liquids.

In conclusion, having the right travel accessories can greatly enhance your comfort and convenience while on the go. From a comfortable travel pillow to a portable charger, a travel adapter to a luggage lock, these must-have accessories will make your journey safe and memorable. So, before you embark on your next adventure, make sure to pack these essentials and enjoy a stress-free travel experience.

Traveling is an incredible way to broaden your horizons and create unforgettable memories. While popular tourist destinations are always a great choice, exploring hidden gems and immersing yourself in local culture can take your travel experiences to a whole new level. In this article, we will share expert tips on how to make the most of your journey by discovering hidden gems and embracing the local culture.

One of the first things to consider when planning a trip off the beaten path is research. Take the time to delve into the history, traditions, and customs of the destination you are visiting. This will not only enhance your understanding and appreciation of the local culture but also help you navigate any potential cultural differences. Understanding the local etiquette, for example, can prevent unintentional faux pas and ensure a more enjoyable experience for both you and the locals.

Once you have done your research, it's time to venture beyond the typical tourist spots and explore the hidden gems of your destination. These hidden gems can be found in the form of lesser-known attractions, local markets, or even off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods. By stepping away from the crowds, you will have the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the local culture and discover unique experiences that are often overlooked by tourists.

To make the most of your exploration, consider engaging with the locals. Locals are often the best source of information when it comes to discovering hidden gems. Strike up conversations with shopkeepers, taxi drivers, or even fellow travelers who have spent some time in the area. They can provide valuable insights and recommendations that you won't find in guidebooks or online travel forums. Additionally, interacting with locals can lead to meaningful connections and a deeper understanding of the local culture.

Another way to embrace the local culture is through food. Sampling local cuisine is not only a delicious experience but also a window into the traditions and flavors of a destination. Seek out local eateries, street food stalls, or even cooking classes to truly immerse yourself in the culinary delights of the region. Trying new dishes and flavors can be an adventure in itself and will undoubtedly create lasting memories.

While exploring hidden gems and embracing the local culture is an exciting endeavor, it's important to prioritize safety during your travels. Research the safety situation of your destination and take necessary precautions. This includes being aware of your surroundings, avoiding risky areas, and following any local safety guidelines. Additionally, consider purchasing travel insurance to protect yourself against any unforeseen circumstances.

In conclusion, exploring hidden gems and immersing yourself in the local culture can provide unforgettable travel experiences. By doing thorough research, engaging with locals, sampling local cuisine, and prioritizing safety, you can create memories that will last a lifetime. So, step off the beaten path, embrace the unknown, and embark on a journey that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the world and its diverse cultures.

Table of Contents

What carry-on backpack or bag should you take?

First, let’s chat about the carry-on bag… or backpack…

There are a few different carry-on options. You can travel with a:

  • Rolling carry-on

The type of travel backpack or bag you take is completely up to you and your travel style.

journey essentials list

We prefer carrying a backpack as a personal item and then a rolling carry-on suitcase when not checking luggage in.

It’s easier to walk around airports and cities with a backpack. Of course, the backpack must have a sleeve so we can slip it over the luggage handle.

Recently, we purchased the Brevitē camera bag – The Jumper . We chose this backpack because we can customize it to fit my DSLR. It also has a lovely feature where I can easily slip the camera in and out of the backpack. Our MacBook Pro also fits in a separate sleeve inside the backpack.

What we love most about this camera bag is that it transforms into a regular backpack when we are not bringing the DSLR. Since we will mostly use it to travel, the DSLR will come with us. It’s one of the main reasons we purchased it.

We needed a camera bag/backpack that made sense to us. In the future, perhaps we will find something else that will be better suited for our travel needs.

Travel Essentials List for Your Carry-on Backpack

What are the things you should pack in your backpack? You should always carry your passport, wallet, and other travel documents.

Below is our travel essentials list of 30 items you should always have in your carry-on backpack. They’ll make everything from easy travel days to long-haul flights more comfortable.

1. Pack Your Passport & Official Government ID

female hand handing over passport

This travel essential is a no-brainer. You need your passport to travel internationally and some form of government-issued ID when traveling domestically. Keep these items in an easily accessible but safe place in your carry-on bag.

Consider your passport your golden ticket.

Also, make sure it’s not expired. If it’s a year from expiring, we suggest renewing it ASAP. Do not wait to renew it. We recently waited three months for passport renewal. It is taking quite a bit of time these days, so it is best not to wait.

2. Have All Tavel Documents Printed

In our digital age, it seems old-school and wasteful to have to print out all your documents, but it’s a must. Do not leave home without a copy of your travel arrangements.

You never know when you have to pull them out. And you can’t always rely on technology. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

  • Travel Insurance

3. CDC Vaccination Card

Proof of vaccination is being required less and less. Some destinations still require you to submit or show your vaccination card upon entry. Do not leave home without your vaccination card. Put this at the top of your travel essentials list and keep it with your passport.

You can purchase a passport holder and vaccine holder , or you can keep your vaccination card should keep it safe in a clear slip .

red pen sitting on notebook

This is one travel essential people forget about, but a pen is handy for travel documents and filling out forms.

You might not think you need it because most things are digital these days, but you never know when you’ll need to jot something down or fill out a form that doesn’t have the option to do it digitally.

Besides, with all the germs going around, best to carry your own.

Beach Packing List

Get beach-ready with this packing list! Whether you’re heading on a day trip to the beach or taking a beach vacation, this beach packing list comes in handy every time. Don’t miss packing any of these items. Printable included!

hand holding a red wallet

How many times have you heard the story of someone leaving their wallet at home?

Many times! The horror. You could miss your flight this way.

Your wallet probably holds your driver’s license, credit card, money, and other essential items you need when traveling.

It’s easy to forget to transfer it to a carry-on bag. So this is why we are here to remind you not to forget your wallet.

6. Money | Foreign Currency

Don’t leave your home without some cash. Depending on where you travel to, not everyone takes credit cards. Believe me, we love paying for everything with a credit card because we get to rack up those travel points. That cash is important for gratuities and anyone who doesn’t take a credit card.

And if you’re traveling abroad, try to order foreign currency with your bank before you leave the country. The exchange rates at international airports are a scam. Save yourself some time and money.

If you forget to get cash, you can always withdraw from an ATM at a reputable bank. Look for large banks with ATMs inside the bank. You will get the best exchange rate this way, too.

Toiletries, Health & Medications

7. extra masks.

Bring extra masks with you for the plane and during your travels. Some destinations are more relaxed with masks than others, but it’s up to you and how comfortable you feel wearing one.

And t here are international flights that are still requiring them.

8. Bring Disinfectant Wipes & Hand Sanitizer

journey essentials list

Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes are a must , especially during these times. You will want to wipe down your tray table or armrest on the plane or at the airport.

And let’s not forget about those nasty airplane bathrooms. Yuck. Hand sanitizer is also key when soap and water aren’t available.

9. Medication | Vitamins

If you take any medications or vitamins daily, pack them in your carry-on and keep them close to you. Having some travel essential meds on hand is also great, like Advil, Tylenol, Immodium, and Zyrtec.

We always recommend taking some extra vitamin C or some Airborne. It never hurts to keep your immune system high.

10. Lip balm

journey essentials list

We can’t forget the lip balm! You’ll want to moisturize your lips because the air in the plane dries you out.

11. Hand lotion

journey essentials list

We don’t know about you, but our hands get incredibly dry when we travel. The recycled air on the plane dries us out and makes our hands feel rough and stiff.

So always travel with a small tube of hand lotion to keep your hands feeling smooth and moisturized. But remember, it has to be 3oz or less.

12. Disposable Travel Toothbrush or Listerine Strips

journey essentials list

The small disposable travel toothbrushes and Listerine strips are great for quick freshening up after long flights where we’ve been eating and sleeping. It’s nice to give your mouth a quick brush or pop in one of these strips to freshen up that breath and taste.

13. Eyeglass Cleaning Cloth

journey essentials list

This is for anyone that wears glasses! You know that cleaning cloth for our glasses is essential everyday. We can easily forget to pack it, so it’s a must on this travel essentials list.

Nobody likes to look through smudged and dirty glasses. And we can never carry enough of these because we lose them. Make sure to carry a couple.

14. Tissues

Never know when you need a tissue. The carry-on packs in your local pharmacy’s travel section are perfect.

Sometimes, we’ll take a wad of tissues from our tissue box at home and put them inside a zip-lock bag.

Travel & Airplane Comforts

15. travel pillow.

women snuggling a blue travel pillow

Let’s chat about travel pillows. We’d say this is an essential travel item if your flight is any more than 3 hours or you’re flying on a redeye.

There are many options, and it will probably take a few different tries to figure out exactly which pillow is right for you.

  • Neck Travel Pillows (the most used)
  • Turtle Pillow
  • Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow
  • Small rectangle travel pillow

Because I can’t sleep on planes, I can’t exactly offer the best sound advice here. However, hubby uses his regular travel pillow and sleeps like a baby. I use a small rectangle pillow because I’m not too fond of the neck pillow, but it is a pain to pack.

Cruise Essentials to Pack

A cruise vacation is a perfect way to relax and escape from the everyday grind. But before you set sail, be sure to pack these essentials that will help make your cruise even more enjoyable. These items include everything from sun protection essentials to must-have medications. So don’t forget to add them to your cruise packing list.

16. Shawl, Scarf, or Travel Blanket

journey essentials list

A shawl or a travel blanket is on our travel essentials list for a long flight. Unless you’re flight premium economy or first class, expect not to get a travel blanket or pillow. Some airlines will still provide them on international flights. It’s still best to be ready with your own.

You can bring a travel blanket, or you can also bring one of your favorite shawls that you reuse throughout your travels. You can easily roll it up and stuff it into your carry-on backpack.

A travel scarf and shawl, also known as a pashmina, has many purposes. You can roll it up and use it as a pillow. You can use it around your neck. You can cover your head with it. You can use it as a blanket.

17. Eye Mask

journey essentials list

An eye mask is key for getting some sleep on long flights. These eye masks block out the light in the cabin and are comfortable so that it doesn’t put any pressure on your eyes.

You want an eye mask that is adjustable so you can get the perfect fit. We purchased the ones above in a two-pack, which have been used multiple times.

It has been a game-changer for us, especially since one of us recently took many red-eye flights to New York .

18. Airplane Foot Rest

journey essentials list

Sitting in economy class? This airplane footrest is an easy hack to help elevate your feet and give you a better reclining position. It hangs over your tray table, and you insert your feet into the hammock.

Supposedly it helps with swelling and soreness and also helps you sleep. We have purchased it for our upcoming travels to Ita l y and will report back.

This also works best for people shorter in height.

19. Compression Socks

journey essentials list

Compression socks are so important! You should consider wearing compression socks regardless of age or length of the flight.

Compression socks help keep the blood flowing in your legs and feet from swelling and help prevent blood clots.

20. Collapsible Watter Bottle

journey essentials list

It’s essential to stay hydrated, especially when you’re traveling. Since they don’t allow you to bring water bottles through security, having a collapsible water bottle ready is great. Most international airports have water stations you can fill the water bottles.

The collapsible water bottle is also easy to store and great to have during your travels.

21. Easy Snacks

Always pack snacks. With the post-chaos after 2020, you have no idea what’s open at airports and if you’ll be fed on the plane.

Bring packaged and sealed items like protein bars, nuts, and freeze-dried fruits.

22. Bring a Book to read

Bring a book and/or make sure you have books downloaded to your Kindle or Kindle App.

If you use a Kindle, download your book selection before losing Wi-Fi . Also, charge the device before leaving your house.

Audiobooks are also a great alternative!

23. Mobile Phone

mobile phone with boarding pass

Speaking of the digital age we are living in, we can’t leave home without our mobile phones. Without one, we shouldn’t travel to another city, state, or country. Your mobile phone is one of the top travel essentials.

You’ll need your mobile phone throughout the entire vacation. Assuming you have a fancy smartphone, it probably is your go-to camera. You probably use the internet for travel research, google maps, and more. These days, a mobile phone is a mini-laptop.

24. Get a data plan!

While we are on the subject of phones… This is not exactly a carry-on, but it’s part of your phone, and in my humble opinion, it’s a travel essential. Make sure you have a data plan that covers you wherever you travel.

Don’t rely on unreliable free Wi-Fi or free map apps that work when it feels like it. I understand we want to save money by not paying for data plans – that used to be us- but there are options. You don’t want to regret it later.

Especially when the gate agent asks you to fill out a form online from your phone, in the present times that we are living in, the chances of this happening are high.

There are options now for data:

  • Get a temporary international data plan with your cellphone provider. .. ask them what they have available. We are with T-Mobile, and our monthly international plan includes unlimited data in over 200 countries.
  • You can purchase a local SIM card with unlimited data when you arrive in the country you’re visiting.
  • Set up an e-Sim option before you fly and arrive at your destination. Note: Your phone must have the capability to use e-Sims.
  • You can also invest in a Wifi hot spot .

Now, if you’re looking to disconnect while you travel, good for you completely!

While we are at it, we suggest signing up for a VPN to keep your data safe and ensure that certain sites aren’t blocked when visiting another country. We use Surfshark VPN: click here for more info.

25. Bring a Set of Headphones

journey essentials list

You’ll want to bring your own to use on the plane, whether they are noise-canceling headphones or your favorite earbuds. For short flights, you may get away without needing them, but for long-haul flights, they are necessary. The ones they hand out on the plane are not great or comfortable.

Most planes have a regular audio jack and do not have Bluetooth capability. So if you’re headphones are wireless, they will not work with the flight’s entertainment system. We do have a solution for this.

You can either bring a pair of headphones with an old audio jack plugin or bring along a wireless transmitter . The wireless transmitter can be plugged into the audio jack, allowing you to use your Bluetooth headphones.

26. Necessary Chargers and Adapters

journey essentials list

Do not forget to pack the necessary chargers and adapters for your electronics . Also, any international adapters you may need. This is one travel essential often forgotten, and we spend money buying new ones. That money does add up quickly.

You will probably need to pack the following:

  • mobile phone USB charger and adapter
  • laptop plug
  • camera charger
  • backup battery charger and USB plug
  • international adapter / plug
  • additional power outlet , just in case

We pack all of these chargers and cables in a travel case . It makes slipping into a backpack or carry-on luggage easier and more compact.

27. Backup charger

journey essentials list

A backup charger is one of the best things on this travel essentials list. You should carry a backup charger during all your travels. You never know when you’ll need it.

It can be small enough to fit in your purse or a small backpack.

28. Laptop or Tablet

A tablet may be all you need to travel, which is awesome. It’s lighter and easier to carry. But sometimes, you may need to work on a laptop or have it to transfer your photos to an external hard drive.

Either way, you should always pack your electronics in a carry-on bag . Do not check in valuable items like this.

29. External Hardrive

journey essentials list

As you take photos and videos with your camera, you may want to transfer them to an external drive. You should always keep the external hard drive safe in your carry-on. For us, this is a travel essential.

It’s also great to back up those photos to a cloud photo storage like SmugMug .

Some of us travel just with our smartphones, the camera we always have available. If you plan to bring any other cameras, you want to pack those in your carry-on. These are items you do not want to check in with your luggage.

We travel with our Sony A7iii full-frame mirrorless camera and a  GoPro .

We hope this list helps you pack your carry-on for traveling. As always, we welcome any additional travel tips or suggestions from our readers.

Train Essentials: 25 Things to Pack for a Long Rail Journey

Preparing for an overnight train or a long day overlanding by rail? These 25 train essentials will ensure you have a comfortable, safe and enjoyable journey.

Trains are my favourite way to travel – bar none.

And I might be in the minority here, but I love long, drawn-out rail journeys the best.

I’ve done an 18-hour trip by rusty train through corn fields in Northern Myanmar, and rode the Amtrak from Austin to New Orleans. I’ve taken the Reunification Express from Hanoi to Saigon, the Marrakesh Express from Tangier, and the scenic route across Austria from Vienna to Ljubljana .

I’ve been in a train on a ferry to cross from mainland Italy to Sicily , and I was there for the grand re-opening of Cambodia’s Royal Railways from Phnom Penh to Kampot .

Some of my favourite rail journeys of all time are in the Caucasus, particularly the overnight trains between Tbilisi and Yerevan (Armenia) and Tbilisi and Baku (Azerbaijan).

All this to say that I’ve done my fair share of train travel and picked up a lot of handy tips along the way. This list of 25 train essentials includes all the things I pack for a comfortable and safe train journey .

Don’t forget to check out my travel resources page for a list of websites and services I use to book train tickets around the world.

What to pack for a long rail journey: 25 train essentials

1. travel documents.

You’re not going to get very far without the correct travel documents.

If you pre-purchased your train tickets online or through an agent, make sure the document you’re holding is a valid ticket for boarding and not an e-voucher that you have to exchange at the station (I got caught out with this once in Budapest !).

If you’re travelling across an international border, make sure you have your visas and identification in order. Keep your documents somewhere handy – you never know when a ticket inspector might appear.

2. A small bag for valuables

Separate to my main luggage and carry on, I always travel with a third ‘small bag’ that I keep on me at all times. It’s big enough to hold my passport, my phone, my wallet, and one of my external hard drives – i.e. my most precious possessions.

A small bag is particularly handy on a train, when you might want to walk to the dining cart or the bathroom without lugging your backpack around.

Some people might use a money belt or a fanny pack, but I personally prefer a simple sling bag like this one (as a bonus, it’s also anti-theft).

3. Luggage locks

If you’re on a long train trip, chances are you’re going to be in and out of your carriage or seat throughout the journey.

It’s just not practical to carry all your luggage all the time, so I recommend investing in some good-quality luggage locks to keep your gear safe.

I like these these locks because they have a long, flexible mechanism that I can loop through multiple zippers.

Food & drink items

4. insulated water bottle.

A good-quality refillable water bottle is absolutely essential these days. All the better if it’s insulated and will keep your drinking water chilled throughout the journey.

I personally use a S’Well water bottle when I travel and at home. After I left my 17oz version at the airport in Bangkok (devastating!), I upgraded to the 25oz volume, which I actually prefer. The insulation is top-notch, and the exterior coating prevents it from sweating in warm weather.

Not all trains have potable water fountains, so that’s something you need to check in advance. In the absence of a refill station, you’ll need to bring enough water to last you the journey (or else buy bottled water on the train).

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after all my years of train travel, it’s not to skimp on the snacks. Even if your train has a dining cart and you’re able to eat a hot meal, I still recommend bringing plenty of healthy things to nibble on throughout the journey.

To keep things fresh and tidy, you’re going to want to pack a few sealer clips and reusable silicone bags . Again, these items are really helpful for cutting down on single-use plastics and food waste.

6. Something to share

One of the quickest ways to make friends on a long train journey (aside from #21, which we’ll get to soon) is by bringing a few food items you can easily share around.

It’s quite typical for people to share food on trains in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, particularly with tourists. It’s nice to have something to give back in return.

While I usually recommend nuts or dried fruit, those things can be difficult to share. Biscuits or chocolates might be more appropriate in this case. In the Caucasus, it’s a great idea to bring a few pre-sliced churchkhela . A bottle of wine or brandy also works!

Train essentials for keeping organised & tidy

7. packing cubes.

If you don’t already travel with them, packing cubes for travel really come into their own on a long train journey. This is especially true on an overnighter when you need quick access to a change of clothes or your toiletries.

This is especially true on an overnighter when you need quick access to a change of clothes or your toiletries.

When you’re packing for the train, be sure to keep the things you’re going to need in the top of your bag or in your day pack. It’s never fun having to rummage around for something or turn your backpack upside down in a confined space such as a train berth.

8. Travel clothesline

A portable travel clothesline that doesn’t require pegs ( like this one ) can come in very handy on an overnight train. String it up between bunks to air out a wet face towel, or use it to jury-rig a makeshift privacy curtain if you’re on the bottom bunk.

9. Rubbish bag

Not all trains have trash bins inside the compartments. Some have tiny bins that are quick to overflow. Bring your own bag for trash – either a paper bag or a reused plastic bag – to keep your seat area or compartment tidy.

Train essentials for staying clean & fresh

10. hand sanitiser.

If you’ve ever been on an overnight train in Southeast Asia, you’ll know full well that the bathrooms often aren’t very glamorous.

These days, you can find hand soap and even paper towels on most trains – but I don’t know if that’s ever going to be enough to get the germs off. I always carry hand sanitiser on the train – and remember to keep it somewhere handy so you don’t have to rummage through your things to find it.

11. Biodegradable wet wipes

Biodegradable wet wipes are great for cleaning down train tables, cleansing sticky fingers, and for using in the place of toilet paper when none is provided (not unusual on a train).

Biodegradable wet wipes are better for the environment. These ones are multi-purpose, and these ones are created especially for bathroom use.

12. Re-hydrating face mist

One of the easiest ways to freshen up without having to set foot in the train bathroom is by using a re-hydrating face mist.

I carry this non-irritant aloe and cucumber one whenever I travel and use it all the time on train, bus and plane journeys.

Train essentials for getting a good night’s sleep

13. sleeping bag liner.

If your train journey is overnight, you’ll be given clean linens to make up your bed (this is typical throughout Southeast Asia, the Caucasus, and in Europe). However, if you’re at all fussy about the quality of your bedclothes, it can be a good idea to bring your own.

Silk sleeping bag liners are lightweight, compact, and perfect for this purpose. I’ve been on overnight trains in Vietnam where the sheets were, uh, sub-par – I just hopped into the safety of my silky bag and forgot all about those suspect mattress stains.

If the train pillow looks dodgy, you can also use it as a pillow case. For winter travel, you might prefer to use a fleece version .

14. Roll-up travel pillow

I suffer from migraines that are often triggered by sleeping in a bad position, so I always travel with my own pillow. This roll-up travel pillow has been by my side since 2013 (don’t worry, it’s machine-washable and I clean it regularly).

I swear by it – it’s so much better than a neck support pillow while still being compact and lightweight. I use mine on trains, buses, and as my regular sleeping pillow.

15. Silicone ear plugs

Even if you have a private berth, trains can be noisy at night – especially with the clunking and crunching of machinery. Reusable silicone ear plugs like these ones are absolutely essential if you’re a light sleeper and a good idea even if you’re not.

16. Weighted eye mask

One of my worst overnight train trips was from Bangkok to Butterworth in the third-class open-bunk carriage. I was on the top bunk, and they left the fluorescent ceiling lights on all night . Even with a curtain drawn around my mattress, the light still came in through the top and kept me awake.

I only wish I had thought to pack an eye mask (duh). I now travel with a weighted eye mask which does wonders for my migraines, too.

journey essentials list

What to wear on the train

17. plastic slippers or thongs.

If you’re on a long train trip, you’re going to need a pair of shoes you can easily slip on to wear in common areas and to the bathroom. These lightweight slippers are machine-washable and great for travel.

Just remember to bring a bag to put them in when you’re ready to pack up – you don’t want those tainted soles touching the rest of your luggage, trust me.

18. Light cardigan or cotton scarf (summer)

Depending where you are, train air-conditioning systems can be notoriously overzealous. Night trains in particular can get very chilly very fast when the central air is left on.

Remember to pack a light cardigan or oversized scarf that you can use to keep your shoulders warm.

19. Warm socks and a comfortable sweater you can sleep in (winter)

If you’re travelling in winter, you’re obviously going to need to take proper gear on the train. In the Caucasus and Eastern Europe, trains all have central heating.

Gadgets to bring on the train

20. powerbank.

Don’t just assume that your train seat or berth is going to have easy access to power. On some trains in the Caucasus and in Vietnam, the only outlets are communal ones located in the corridors.

If you plan on using your phone throughout the train journey, you’ll certainly need to carry a powerbank .

21. Portable WIFI hotspot

Not all trains have WIFI, either – especially older locomotives. A portable WIFI hotspot is worth the investment if you need to stay connected throughout the journey.

And like I mentioned earlier, sharing a hotspot is a surefire way to make new travel buddies – it’s probably even better than sharing a bottle of wine.

22. Headphone splitter

If you’re travelling with a partner or friend and you want to pass the time by watching a movie or listening to a podcast, etc., this little device is indispensable for sharing audio.

It’s one of my travel essentials!

23. E-reader

Another travel gadget I couldn’t live without is my Kindle . I can’t read on buses or in cars because I get motion sick. Long train journeys are one of the rare times I can settle down with a book and not feel guilty that I should be working.

When it comes to books that are ideal for reading on trains, Amazing Train Journeys and Monisha Rajesh’s Around the World in 80 Trains are both apropos.

24. Reading light or headlamp

Most trains are fitted with reading lights but there’s no guarantee they will be working. A reading lamp like this one or even a headlamp is always good to have so you don’t disturb other people. It can also come in handy for making your way around the train in the dark.

Of course you could just use the torch on your phone, but that’s going to wear your battery down pretty fast.

25. Your camera

One of the best things about travelling by train is of course the scenery. A lot of people get so caught up in the logistics of the journey or finding ways to pass the time that they forget to look outside.

Make sure your camera is easily accessible so you don’t miss out on any photo opportunities. Oftentimes, trains pass through landscapes other travellers miss out on when they’re moving around by plane or car – so here’s your chance to see something truly unique.

I recently upgraded to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 . It’s super lightweight and when paired with a prime lens, perfect for snapping fast-moving scenes from train windows.

What a fantastic list of train travel essentials! Your experience with various rail journeys adds a unique perspective to the recommendations. I appreciate the emphasis on the small bag for valuables – it’s a practical approach to keep essentials within easy reach.

Great list. Thank you!

Thanks for the tip about how bringing a reading lamp can also be great for a long train ride. I’d like to find a good train tour soon because I want to take my kids somewhere nice next month. I think that will be a good thing to do after being so busy with work these past few months.

Do you know if an American with an Azerbaijan residence card can cross the Georgia/Azerbaijan border on the train?

Hi DW – I am not sure, but irregardless there are no trains between Georgia and Azerbaijan at the moment.

Thanks for the info..going on a 3 day trip on the train..very helpful.

Thank you for your valuable advice. Helps a lot

Thank you so much. I’m traveling alone with my three kids 13-9yrs on the auto train. This was very helpful. I plan on buying the sling bag you suggested

Fantastic, I’m glad it was helpful! Safe travels, Aimee!

Hey !! Thanks its very informative.Just tripped over this and I love the info. Well done! I’m a “young” active 65 year old looking to start traveling alone to places more intriguing than Pari or Rome( which I love ,but…)

The Ultimate Travel Essentials List

It’s no secret that nearly every traveler has their own travel essentials list.

The funny part is that whether you’re a long-term traveler, or just enjoy the occasional weekend getaway, it’s likely that your bags contain many of the same items.

Clothes, gear, a smartphone with maps and apps, passports, luggage and money are all pretty universal gear when you leave your home and choose to explore this great big world.

We’ve left for year-long trips, as well as overnighters, and everything in between, so it’s almost comical that our list of things to pack for a trip doesn’t vary all that much. Sure, if we’re going someplace hot vs someplace cold our gear will vary.

Depending on our timeframe, the amount we bring grows or shrinks, but the true must-have travel items that we bring stay pretty much the same regardless of when or where we go.

Your needs and ours might not always coincide, but that’s alright. Hopefully, this post gives you a few ideas for next adventure!

If you think we forgot an essential item, please feel free to remind us down below.

Notable Essential Additional Apps

Essential apps for travel.

While my phone is littered with travel apps, there are only a few I routinely use. The five main ones I think every traveler should have.

Google Maps – Offline mode

Yes, good old Google Maps is the ultimate essential travel app for me. No matter where I go, I preload an offline map of my destination. I even have offline maps preloaded when I’m in my home city.

Why? Because you’re never guaranteed when your phone might be disconnected from data and the internet.

Whether you’re paying for an overpriced data connection from your home provider abroad, using a local sim in whatever country you’re visiting, or even using one of the many Wi-Fi data hotspots , the only thing you can somewhat trust is an offline map.

Prefer paper maps? That’s totally fine, but a paper map won’t find a well-rated Italian restaurant, or tell you how to get from point A to point B as easily. If you prefer an alternative to Google Maps, go with what makes you comfortable, but an offline map app is a must have app for travel.

Never used a VPN? Up until a few years ago, neither had we, but as the world changes, so must we all.

Why should you use one? Well, if you imagine that your connection to the internet is a pipe with 255 holes, then a VPN for travel is a private tube within that pipe that ensures that whatever you send, do or view stays between you and your end points.

These days, we’re using Private Internet Access VPN, which is fully open source, and has a no logs policy.

Without a VPN, the moment you connect to public Wi-Fi or cellular data, anyone from malicious users, to governments, to data and Wi-Fi providers, can track your movements and even capture some of your data. While you may not care who sees your hilarious picture of Uncle Frank with a parrot on his head, you definitely don’t want someone seeing your bank passwords, getting access to your email, taking control of your social media accounts. It’s a sad reality, but it’s a reality nonetheless.

Using something like NordVPN, the fastest VPN on our wish list, definitely isn’t a bad idea. It really does secure your online sessions, and can even give you access to geo-localized streaming sites even if you’re not in the proper country anymore.

Google Translate

While you think the Google Translate app only helps you if you’re in a foreign country, I think I use Google Translate almost as much at home. With on the fly translations from nearly any language, you can use the camera mode to translate menus, signs, flyers, instructions and more in real time. It’s like magic, I swear!

It will even let you translate spoken conversations, as they’re being spoken. It definitely helps break down language barriers, and it’s a helpful tool to learn greetings in another language, something that can net you better deals and even make you seem friendlier to locals.

XE Money Conversion

While there are plenty of currency converters out there, XE has been my go-to currency app for years. Nice and simple, it lets me know how badly I’m being overcharged for everything from taxis to street vendors. It has also helped me realize that there are often better deals to be had by either buying in the local currency or with US dollars.

The apps above are really only a few of the essential travel apps I consider mandatory for travel these days. Most sites from TripAdvisor to Airbnb work fine via a web browser, but unless your device’s storage is full, grab as many as you want. Some popular essential travel apps I often recommend to friends include TripAdvisor, Expedia, Booking.com, Uber, Lyft, GasBuddy and Airbnb.

Of course, you’ll likely want some social apps, but I don’t consider them essential for travel. You can even make the argument that posting on socials takes away from your time truly immersing yourself in a destination. Some social apps have decent video calling, however, so take into account how you plan to communicate with family and friends back home before you go.

Essential Baggage for Travel

Your baggage can vary depending if you’re hiking the Himalayas or planning to cruise the Mediterranean. Since this is a travel list, and not specifically a hiking or cruising list, we’ll forgo the technical hiking gear, and stick to the basics.

Over the years we’ve traveled with backpacks, oversized luggage, carry-ons, duffel bags and everything in between. What have we discovered? Carry-ons are now our go to baggage choice, and what we consider to be the best all around travel backpacks .

Whether heading out for a weekend drive down the coast, or jumping on a plane and flying halfway around the world for a few months, carry-ons are where it’s at, at least for us.

When the kids were small it was a little tougher managing several smaller bags, so we traveled with just a couple of large suitcases. Now, the kids are older, and we all bring our own, individual, carry on.

It’s so much easier keeping track of our own things. Packing tips for a long-haul light with children are an entirely different beast than packing for adults

Most carry-ons include plenty of space for our travel essentials and best of all, traveling with a carry-on can help save costs on cheaper airlines that don’t include free checked luggage.

Whether you choose a hard shell suitcase for its security and waterproof abilities, or a cloth shell for all the handy pockets, is up to you. My family prefers the hard shell, while I still love my old softshell. However, after getting my clothes damp on several occasions due to sudden downpours, I do see the value of a hard shell these days.

Essential Personal Item for Travel

What? How are you supposed to put everything on this list into one measly carry-on? It’s impossible you say? Yeah, unless you’re a hardcore, wash your undies in the sink every night type of person, or plan on wearing the same bathing suit by the pool every day, most people need a bit more room to carry their belongings.

That’s where a small backpack comes in for your must-have international travel items. Most airlines around the world call this item your personal item, and while it might have been intended for purses, snacks and small camera cases, the airline does not specify what personal items must be used for, just that they must fit within a certain size.

Well, guess what? Those dimensions for personal items on most airlines are almost universally the same, and just smaller than a typical carry-on suitcase.

The bonus here is that you can put a ton of stuff into your personal item. This is usually where we store our electronics like our camera, laptops and chargers, however you can fill it as you please. Just make sure that the backpack you use for your personal item is comfortable enough to carry and can be squished down to allowable size and isn’t overpacked.

While your neighbor on the plane might not love your dual baggage, having everything you own within a few feet of you is an awesome security feature. It also lets you beat the rush through customs as others have to wait for their checked luggage to show up.

Essential Documents for Travel

One of the essential documents we never leave home without is our passport.

While you likely don’t need your passport if you’re only planning on staying in your home country, or driving a few hours from home, we’ve determined that having our passports with us whenever we’re gone is just smart planning. That mentality has actually saved us a few times when a trip opportunity to another country has opened up while we were already on the road heading somewhere else.

While the majority of you likely don’t have to worry about that, we also only live a few hours from the border with the USA. It has actually happened a few times that we decided to drive a bit farther than originally anticipated and headed down south to the USA, meaning we needed our summer road trip packing list yet again. Without our passports that wouldn’t have been an option.

Regardless, we have a saying in our family: “ all you need to travel is a passport and money and, if you need it and don’t have it then either borrow, rent or buy it’ .

Essential Currency for Travel

As the old riddle goes, what does a poor person need, a rich person has, and everyone wants more of? Money, of course.

While hard currency is going the way of the dodo these days in many countries, cash is still king in many places of the world. While we don’t generally carry much cash with us when we’re home in Canada, we do make sure to have a few hundred on us when we travel. From taxis to ice cream vendors, having a bit of cash makes things easier.

We’ve also taken the habit of carrying US currency, as well as the local currency. Even though the Euro has gotten more popular, US currency is still accepted in nearly every other country around the world.

On top of some hard currency, we also carry a bank card and a credit card when we travel. Truth be told, if I had to choose only two things to bring besides the clothes on my back, it would be a passport and a credit card. The rest I can figure out when I get there.

Essential Undergarments for Travel

Whoa, from money to underwear, how did we get here so fast? Easy, when bringing the essentials you need to start at the bottom and work your way up.

That means at least a couple pairs of socks and enough underwear for another five days, not including what you’re wearing the day you leave.

Why five days? Because that’s around the amount of time most people travel. Now, you can bring less and require more frequent washing, but the size-to-space ratio is small enough that skimping out here doesn’t yield you a ton of extra room.

Six days is also a decent amount of time you can wear your other clothes without having to wash anything, so if you are going for longer, day six or day seven makes a great laundry day.

Essential Pants for Travel

Here’s where things can get tricky. Everyone needs underwear, but who’s wearing pants? Aren’t you all just wearing shorts or a dress and a bathing suit and hanging by a pool or ocean? Wait, no? Okay, here is when you need to pack for your destination.

A good rule of thumb is a few pairs of daily wear pants, some shorts (if the weather is warm and you enjoy wearing shorts) and something nice. Going with something black or tan is best since it can work with almost anything, but I won’t give you fashion advice. You know what you like so run with it, whether it’s a flowing linen dress, military surplus for travel, or both.

If you’re a fan of dresses or skirts, then feel free to toss in something extra.

Essential Shirts for Travel

Like pants, shirts should be chosen specifically for your destination. If you like to rock Hawaiian shirts, then go for it. If t-shirts are more your speed, pack five days worth, but make sure to pack at least one nicer shirt just in case you go someplace a little higher up the food chain.

Blouses, sweaters, tank tops, etc. just make my head swim, so I’ll let you choose what you like best. Just remember that you have a smaller wardrobe when you travel, so try to pick clothes that can be swapped around to give you more outfits.

Essential Bathing Suit for Travel

Don’t like water? What’s wrong with you? Just kidding. If water isn’t your thing, then skip to the next on the list, but hear me out for a second.

If you’re close to an ocean, a lake, a river or a sea, chances are that water is closer than you think. Many hotels offer pools and hot tubs, hot springs can be found in locations around the world, and you never know when a chance to get wet and wild will pass you by.

Actually heading to the beach for a vacation? Pack at least two bathing suits so you can swap out the wet one for a dry one when you’re back in your room. It makes life so much more comfortable, and it’s a great way to stay cool in the heat outdoors .

Essential Outerwear for Travel

Heading somewhere cold?

Pack all the cold weather clothes you’ll need. As Canadians, we can say with some authority that warm clothes in a cold location are about as essential as you get. I’d happily trade my credit card for another layer of warmth when it’s icy cold outside.

Tip! If you’re short on luggage room, wear your jacket on the plane to save on luggage space. A good coat is an essential item to stay warm when it’s cold outside .

In truth, battling cold is all about layers. This also applies if you’re going someplace warm with cooler nights. Instead of that one huge jacket, look at layering. A few long-sleeved shirts can do double duty over that t-shirt collection you decided to bring. Just make sure they’re a little loose fitting to allow a layer of warm air next to your skin, or you won’t get many benefits.

Essential Electronic Gear for Travel

This is where the fun begins.

For years we’ve had a dedicated backpack for our electronics gear. It’s always been one of our allowed personal items. Short of our wallets, cellphones and passports, it’s our most guarded item. It rarely leaves our side, and won’t even be put in the trunk if we grab a taxi or Uber.

Our electronics bag includes our camera and a few lenses, at least one laptop, eBook readers, tablets, chargers and cables plus usually a few USB batteries for on the go recharging. I recommend having at least one brick charger with you at all times.

While your electronics gear might differ from ours, and you might want to keep things light, I strongly urge you to take a minimum of a small backup charger and cable for your phone since they fail way too often. They always seem to fail at the worst moments, and if you’re like so many people, your phone is also your camera, your map, your reservation holder, your ticket holder and your lifeline to both your digital existence and your life back home.

Essential Toiletries for Travel

Besides electronics, there is non-electronic gear you might consider essential. Toothbrush, toothpaste, brush or comb, deodorant, contacts if you wear them, tweezers, Tylenol or other medications, etc.

This list is pretty vague, because so many different people have their own washing up rituals. The best I can tell you is to simplify. If you’re traveling with a partner maybe only bring a single brush or single tube of toothpaste.

While you don’t need to share everything, liquids are heavy and you’re only allowed so much on an airplane. Putting it all in one of the best travel toiletry bags is a nice way to secure it. If space is tight, a quart size Ziploc bag works in a pinch, and it does make pulling it out for airport security much easier. Remember that 100 ml or 3.4 oz per item is the maximum liquid size in carry-on luggage these days.

Essential Snacks for Travel

Thought we were done, didn’t you? Well everyone knows that a successful trip always begins with food. Well, I don’t know about that, but I can confidently say that good food has made a trip go from good to great, while bad food has turned a trip from good to bad.

While snacks won’t guarantee you a good time, they can keep you from making mistakes like eating at that one dirty diner because you’re starving, rather than having a snack and waiting until you have better options.

What you bring is up to you, but I’ll never regret carrying crackers and an extra bottle of water. It works great for our kids for years and works equally well for us.

I hope you found this list helpful. Tell us anything essential you think we missed down below. Safe travels!

Ready to start packing? Here's a breakdown by category of the items you'll likely need and a brief explanation of why they're essential for any road trip list:

Important Road Trip Items

important road trip items collage

The below items should be top priorities for any road trip:

1) Valid Driver's License

Before you hit the road, double-check that your license is still valid and up-to-date.

2) Vehicle Registration

Along with a valid driver's license, you'll also need to make sure your vehicle registration is up-to-date. Keep it in your glove compartment in case you need to grab it quickly.

3) Car Insurance Information

No road trip packing list is complete without car insurance information! If your provider has an app, download it so you always have a convenient way of accessing your policy details.

4) Maintenance Checkup

Ensure that all necessary maintenance is up to date before you embark on your road trip. This includes checking the oil level, examining brakes and tires, ensuring the car battery is in good condition, and topping off any other necessary fluids.

5) Extra Car Key

Keep an extra key to your car with you in case you're locked out or lose your primary key.

6) Car Manual

When available, keep the car manual with you in case of any issues. You may be able to troubleshoot some minor issues by referring to it.

7) Toll Transponder

When wondering what to take on a road trip, chances are a toll transponder doesn't always come to mind! But if your route includes any toll roads, make sure to order the necessary transponders in advance, as this can help you save time and money at the tolls.

Cash is an essential road trip item that can't be overlooked or understated. Even though you may have access to a debit or credit card, it's best to carry between $150 and $250 in cash for any emergencies.

9) Roadside Assistance Phone Number

If your car breaks down, the last thing you want is to be stranded without a way out. Keep the number for your roadside assistance provider in your wallet or phone, so you know who to call if the need arises. You can also contact triple A at 1-800-400-4222.

Road Trip Essentials

The following items are must-haves for any road trip packing list:

10) First Aid Kit

A first aid kit can help in emergencies or minor accidents, so make sure to include one in your road trip checklist.

11) Spare Tire

It's probably there already but just give it a check before you hit the road.

12) Car Jack

This road trip essential is the jam to your spare tire's peanut butter. Make sure it's nestled in the trunk alongside your spare.

13) Jumper Cables

If you ever run out of juice while on the road, jumper cables are a lifesaver. Keep them in your vehicle at all times and you'll be good to go.

14) Road Atlas

GPS and navigation apps don't always work, especially when you're in rural or remote areas. If you plan on taking a scenic route, make sure to bring an old-fashioned yet updated road atlas as a backup.

15) Wiper Fluid

You'll be glad for wiper fluid when the elements don't cooperate, including dust, dirt, rain, and bugs! Keep the container in the car and top off as needed.

16) Basic Tool Kit

You don't need to be a mechanic, but having some basic tools with you is always helpful in case you need to repair something (think screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, etc.).

17) Mechanics Gloves

One of the best road trip essentials is a pair of mechanics gloves. These come in handy when making minor repairs on the road, such as changing a tire or adding wiper fluid.

18) Tire Pressure Gauge

A tire pressure gauge is another essential item to have in your car, as it will help keep your tires in good shape.

19) Ice Scraper

If you're planning on venturing in the wintertime, make sure to bring an ice scraper. You'll thank yourself later when you don't have to use your credit card to scrape off ice from the windshield!

20) Duct Tape

One of our favorite road trip must-haves is duct tape. It has a dozen uses on the road, like fixing minor issues with the car or mending a broken suitcase.

21) Flashlight

Because let's face it: Your phone's flashlight feature can only do so much!

Snacks are classic road trip necessities that can't be overlooked. Pack some healthy options like nuts, granola bars, and fruit to get you through those long drives.

23) Reusable Water Bottle

Hydration is key, so don't forget to bring your reusable water bottle and fill it up at rest stops or restaurants along the way.

Road Trip Basics

road trip basics collage

Now for the fun stuff! These road trip basics can keep you comfy and looking cool.

24) Sunglasses

By sunglasses, we mean more than one pair. After all, you never know when they'll get lost or broken!

25) Sunglass Visor Holder

We highly recommend a visor holder like this one for any road trip packing list. It makes it easy to store your sunglasses and reach them quickly without any fuss.

26) Hand Sanitizer

An essential road trip item, the hand sanitizer is the unofficial soap you wish you had after using a restroom at the gas station where there never seems to be any soap!

27) Painkillers

You never know when a headache or other minor ache may come along, so make sure to pack some painkillers just in case.

28) Travel Mug

You can never go wrong with a travel mug. Bring yours and fill it up at the local coffee shop during rest stops for an extra pick-me-up.

Wipes can be used to clean surfaces, wipe down hands, and even freshen up on the go.

No judgment here—but mints are a road trip must-have. They'll help freshen your breath after all those snacks, and they make a great pick-me-up during long drives.

31) Umbrella

You'd be surprised at how quickly the weather can change, so don't forget to add an umbrella to your road trip checklist.

No more guzzling down your beverages before they get too hot. Instead, just add some ice to your car cooler and enjoy cold drinks at your leisure.

33) Microfiber Towels

There are so many uses for microfiber towels: wiping up spills, cleaning glasses, drying off your car after a wash, and more. Make sure to add a few to your road trip list and you'll be good to go.

34) Swiss Army Knife

A Swiss army knife is one of the best multi-purpose tools ever made. It comes with multiple blades, a corkscrew, scissors, and more in case you need it. The best part? It can fit in your pocket!

35) Bug Spray

Mosquitos and other bugs may be out in full force, so don't forget to pack some bug spray.

36) Travel Blanket

A travel blanket is a great item to have in your car for those long road trips. Not only will it keep you warm, but it can also double as a makeshift picnic blanket or pillow.

37) Travel Notebook

If you're a planner or like to take notes while traveling, then make sure to bring a notebook with you. It's a great way to keep track of all the places you've been and jot down a few memories along the way.

38) Pen and pencils

You can never have too many of these. Stash a few in your glove compartment for filling out paperwork or taking notes.

Road Trip Personal Items

road trip personal items collage

These road trip items are essential for your comfort and enjoyment:

A hat is great for keeping the sun out of your eyes and hair away from your face. It's a small item, but it can go a long way in making your road trip more comfortable.

A scarf is a great way to stay warm in the early mornings and at night. Plus, it will keep your neck from getting sunburned.

We all know how chilly it can get on road trips sometimes, especially in the evenings. A hoodie will keep you warm and is also a great way to show off your style.

42) Earplugs

Earplugs are key for sleeping comfortably on the road. Whether you're in a hotel or camping, make sure to check these off your road trip packing list.

43) Sunscreen

No road trip checklist is complete without sunscreen. Make sure to use at least 40 SPF and apply it regularly to protect your skin from sun damage. (Don't forget to dab some on your ears, too!)

44) Toothbrush

Good oral hygiene is important, even on the road. Make sure to bring a toothbrush and some travel-sized toothpaste with you.

45) Lip Balm

Chapped lips are no fun! Stock up on some lip balm and keep your lips from getting dry and cracked.

46) Lint Roller

Lint rollers are some of the most underrated road trip essentials. They can help keep your clothes looking neat during long drives, and they're especially helpful for pet owners with furry friends in tow.

47) Hair Brush

Keep your locks looking neat and tangle-free while on the road.

48) Hair Ties

Hair ties (or headbands if you prefer) are great for keeping your hair out of your face when needed. They'll also come in handy if you're planning on going for a swim or doing any other outdoor activities.

49) Duffel Bag

Of all the things to bring on a road trip, a duffel bag is one of the most versatile items you can have. It's great for keeping your clothes and essentials organized, gaining quick access to your belongings, and providing extra storage when needed.

50) Laundry Bag

We love a proper laundry bag designed for travel so much that we dedicated a whole blog post to it! Check it out .

51) Packing Cubes

If you're looking for a neat and efficient way to store and access your items, we highly recommend packing cubes.

52) Tide-To-Go Pen

Tide-To-Go pens are essential for removing those pesky food stains that can build up during long road trips. Make sure to have one handy so you can keep your clothes looking their best.

53) Liquid Detergent Packets

Another thing to include on your road trip checklist is liquid detergent packets. They're great for hand-washing clothes if you don't have access to a washing machine or need to do a quick spot clean.

Road Trip Tech

road trip tech collage

Having the right tech gear can make your road trip much more convenient, enjoyable, and comfortable. Here are some top picks:

54) Camera / GoPro

Invest in a good camera or GoPro to capture all the great places you'll be visiting.

55) USB Cable

USB cables will come in handy when you need to charge your phone or other devices on the go.

56) Powerbank

Powerbanks are essential for charging your devices when you don't have access to a power outlet. Make sure to bring one along with you!

57) Car Charger

Car chargers fit into your car's cigarette lighter and can be used to charge your phone or other devices. We recommend getting one with multiple ports so you can charge several devices at once.

58) Phone Mount

If your vehicle doesn't have a built-in navigation system or Apple CarPlay, then you might want to add a phone mount to your road trip checklist. This will help you keep your phone secure and easily accessible while on the road.

59) Headphones

Headphones are another road trip essential if you're planning on listening to music or streaming while riding as a passenger. Invest in a good pair of noise-canceling headphones to ensure that you won't be disturbed by any outside noises, and consider a headphone splitter if you're the sharing kind!

60) Power Inverter

If your car doesn't have enough outlets for charging all of your devices, then consider getting a power inverter. These devices convert DC power from your car's battery into AC power, which can then be used to charge or use multiple devices at once.

61) Gas Buddy App

You've already thought about what to bring on a road trip, but have you thought about what you might need to download? The Gas Buddy app is a great way to quickly find the best gas prices in your area.

62) SpotHero App

SpotHero is another must-have app for road trips. It will help you find and book parking spots with ease, so you can reach your destination hassle-free.

63) Podcasts App

A selection of podcasts is key for those long drives. Download one of the many available and explore the amazing content out there.

Road Trip Extras

Need some more suggestions for the ultimate road trip packing list? These extras will take your experience to the next level.

64) Trunk Organizer

Trunk organizers can help maximize the storage space in your car, so you can arrange all of your road trip essentials neatly and avoid clutter.

65) Extra Batteries

Depending on the type of tech gear you're bringing with you, you'll probably need some extra batteries. Check your device to see what type of batteries you need and stock up on some spares.

66) Titanium Toothpick

Titanium toothpicks are the pro traveler's best-kept secret. They're great for anyone who wants to travel more sustainably, reduce their carbon footprint , or simply have them on hand after a crunchy meal.

67) Coin Pouch w/Quarters

A coin pouch with quarters is a classic item to include in your road trip packing list. It comes in handy when you need to do laundry on the road, use a vending machine, or pay a toll.

68) Car Vacuum Cleaner

Car vacuum cleaners are lightweight and easy to set up, so you can quickly clean your vehicle in between destinations.

69) Car Trash Can

A car trash can will help you keep your vehicle tidy and organized. Look for one that's leak-proof, has a built-in lid, and is easy to empty.

70) UV Window Shades

UV window shades can keep your car cool and reduce the glare of direct sunlight, especially during long summer trips. Choose a set that's easy to install and remove, so you can quickly adjust them as needed.

71) Reusable Shopping Bag

Reusable shopping bags are great for packing snacks on the go, carrying items from the store to the car, and reducing your single-use plastic consumption.

72) Sling Belt or Day Pack

A sling belt or day pack is essential for carrying your valuables while you explore new areas. Get one with several compartments and try complementing it with a carabiner or some other locking mechanism.

73) Apple AirTag

Apple AirTags are great if you want to keep track of all your items while on the road, including your car! They're small, lightweight, and water-resistant. Plus, they work with the Find My App so you can see their location at any time.

Creating my Travel Packing List was my least favorite part of planning our Around the World Trip. When I sought out help, the general travel checklist I found was of little use. I wanted – I needed –  a detailed list of what to pack for my trip.

With little assistance, I floundered through the process of creating my own travel packing checklist – but I succeeded! Now, I’m sharing my list of travel essentials – including very specific details about what to pack for a trip – in this Ultimate Travel Checklist.

Best Travel Packing List

When I was determining what things to pack for my trip, I was torn between being a minimalist traveler and the fact that I was packing for a year-long adventure that would span all seasons. (Most travelers aren’t faced with this challenge, so I share important tips about how to create a packing list for a week or two throughout this post!)

Furthermore, as a budget-conscious traveler, I was faced with creating a travel packing checklist that included essential travel items, plus several Just-In-Case items, so that I wouldn’t have to buy them on the road. It was a strenuous task, but I am now convinced that I have created the Ultimate Packing List.

My detailed packing list includes every item I carry – as well as the bags I carry it all in – with detailed specifics of those travel items, too.

It is, perhaps, important to note that while we are full-time travelers, what I pack does not differ greatly from what I would pack for a week-long vacation. Whether you are looking for an international travel packing list for a week in Europe or a backpacking packing list for a month-long trip to Southeast Asia, our universal packing list can help!

In this post, I talk in detail about my trip packing list – including why some items are necessary and which items can be left behind.

To help fellow travelers, we also have a printable travel checklist that we share – download our free checklist for packing, plus get other valuable travel tips!

Travel Packing Trouble

I’ve never met anyone who loves packing for a trip. In fact, I think packing for a vacation is the most daunting, upcoming-trip-buzz-killer there is. Incorporating necessities for traveling, comfort and style – and resisting the urge to pack everything you own – can be a real struggle.

I used to be an over-packer with a long packing list that went on forever. I was the traveler who checked two large suitcases for a one-week vacation…and only wore about a fifth of what was packed. However, those days of arriving at a hotel amongst a pile of suitcases are long behind me.

The more I traveled, the savvier I became. Coordinated outfits, essential toiletries and sensible shoes were the items I packed. I had a streamlined formula that destroyed my packing dilemma. I could pack for a week-long, overseas trip in about an hour; for weekend jaunts, I could pack and be out the door in 20 minutes’ time.

Travel Packing List for Year-Long Trip

When we decided to spend a year traveling the world, I contemplated what I would carry…and all of my packing angst returned. I spent weeks poring over packing checklists, agonizing over what would make the cut and fretting what would be left behind.

I read travel blogs that insisted I needed over-priced travel products on my list for packing; a farce I regrettably fell for regarding some items and good advice I carelessly dismissed regarding others. Yet, I retained enough self-awareness to know some travel items would never make my world travel packing list.

On the day we boarded that long haul flight to begin our around the world journey , my biggest source of stress was worrying over what I had packed.

Our one year of full-time travel turned into two…and two years turned into three. In that time, my packing worries diminished. Packing is no longer a source of anguish; I’m happy with my packing choices. Since we started our nomadic life in April 2014, what I carry in my backpack has barely changed – only requiring a few small adjustments and tweaks.

{For more insight to packing for long-term travel, read our post, What I Packed to Travel the World }

Packing for Vacation List

Somewhat surprisingly, creating a packing list for vacation is not that different from creating a long-term travel packing list. Travelers going on a trip to a neighboring state or on a vacation to the other side of the world can use my sample packing list as a guideline of what to bring.

When packing for a long trip – anything over a week and definitely when packing for a two-week vacation or longer – determine if you can do laundry during your trip. This will help keep your clothing packing list to a minimum.

Every traveler should tailor their packing checklist to the specific destination. When packing for a trip, keep in mind the weather and activities you will be participating in. Also, determine whether or not you will need to bring electronics (like laptops) and what kind of travel camera you want to bring on your trip.

Ultimate Packing List For World Travel and Vacations

My packing list seldom varies, but if I add (or get rid of!) anything to what I pack, I update this Packing List.

I’ve provided a link to each item so you can see if it will work for your packing list for travel. I have attempted to link to the exact product (make, model and color) that I own, but some of the things I pack are no longer available. In that case, I’ve linked to a similar product.

I share my packing list information in an effort to help other travelers create their packing lists for vacation, but packing is extremely personal. Above all, my best packing advice: Pack What’s Comfortable!

TRAVEL CLOTHES

When it comes to making a travel items list, the best place to start is with clothing.

I pack clothes that can be worn in all weather; the items I carried in my backpack to Iceland in winter   are the same as when we travel to Vietnam . While my list of clothes to pack will likely work for travelers making a vacation packing list for California in the spring (when it’s warm during the day and cool at night) or to Croatia in the autumn , I think summer or winter travelers should plan clothing that is better suited for the hot or cold weather.

Likewise, if you are creating a beach vacation packing list – or are packing for a cruise to the Arctic –  then you will want to tailor your checklist to weather-appropriate gear.

Pro Tip: All clothing on your travel items list should be of the same color scheme to create a travel capsule wardrobe. This is a great hack for packing light – as you will need to pack fewer clothing items overall. Find out more about creating your capsule wardrobe and other top tips in our Packing Hacks article!

Pants, Skirts and Dresses: Vacation Packing List Tips

My trip packing checklist includes a variety of bottoms – including jeans, yoga pants, leggings, capris, a skirt and a skort – but I only pack one pair of each. Many minimalist travelers warn against packing heavy jeans, but honestly, I love wearing jeans – so they make my packing list for vacation and world travel.

One thing that I don’t travel with is zip-off, convertible pants – and here is why: I am not comfortable wearing them. I do think they are brilliant – and I would even say they are backpacking essentials if you are an adventure traveler or extreme minimalist.

However, as I mentioned earlier, you must be comfortable in the clothes you wear on your trip. I packed zip-off pants for my first trip to Europe and I hated wearing them because I didn’t think they were fashionable (I will admit, however, that the styles have come a long way since then!).

In warmer weather destinations, I love wearing dresses for long days of sightseeing…but they are also great for cool weather, when I can warm up the outfit with leggings and my thin hoodie. (This is why matching all clothing items is key!) My dresses are casual, loose-fitting and non-revealing (so that I am able to visit attractions – like churches and temples – in destinations where modesty is required).

Pack for Travel List: Pants, Skirts and Dresses

  • 1 pair jeans (or casual pants  or zip-off pants )
  • 1 pair loose yoga pants with pockets
  • 1 pair moisture-wicking  leggings
  • 1 pair cargo  capris or shorts
  • 1 thin, cotton  skirt
  • 2 casual dresses
  • 1 casual  skort

Long Sleeve Shirts, Short Sleeve Shirts and Tank Tops: Travel Packing List Advice

When we first left to travel the world, I didn’t pack enough shirts – I only had 1 tank top, 2 t-shirts and 3 long sleeve shirts in my bag. It was a huge mistake, as I was constantly doing laundry in both warm and cold weather climates. I have since added additional shirts without adding too much weight to my bag, which has resulted in seriously cutting down on the time I spend doing sink laundry!

That said, washable, quick-drying, non-wrinkling shirts are packing essentials. Pay close attention to the materials of the clothing you pack. If you need to wash a shirt on the road, you want to know that it will dry quickly – and that any wrinkles will shake out of clothing after taking it out of your bag.

Travel List to Pack for Shirts and Tops

  • 4 long sleeve quick drying shirts
  • 1 long sleeve cotton shirt
  • 3  tank tops
  • 1 thin  camisole  used for bottom layer or beachwear
  • 3 loose fitting  t-shirts
  • 1 thin, zip up  hoodie

Undergarments, Pajamas and Swimsuits: Packing Lists Tips

It seems to me that most travelers either over-pack or under-pack undergarments. Those who over-pack argue that you should have 1 (and sometimes 2!) pairs of underwear and socks for every day of the trip.

Minimalist packers contend that undergarments are the easiest to sink wash and the quickest to dry, so there is no reason to pack more than 5 pairs of each for any length trip. I pack 8 pairs of underwear and 8 pairs of socks (which is also what I recommend for anyone who is making a packing list for a week or longer).

ExOfficio underwear are all the rage for travelers – but, personally, they haven’t lived up to my expectations due to an awkward fit, color breakdown and ripped elastic. I still travel with them (mostly because of the money I shelled out to buy them), but I much more prefer wearing the breathable Fruit of the Loom bikini underwear – which cost a mere fraction of the price of ExOfficio.

Travel Packing Checklist for Undergarments

  • 1 set of  pajamas
  • 1 bikini swimwsuit (choose one swimsuit that fits your style)
  • 4  Exofficio underwear
  • 4 Fruit of the Loom underwear
  • 2 sport bras
  • 2 bras and 1 racerback bra
  • 6 athletic socks
  • 2 socks for flats or slip on shoes
  • 1 fuzzy socks or travel slippers
  • 1 compression socks

Travel Outerwear: Coats, Gloves, Hats, Scarves and Wraps

We travel in all seasons, so I pack a variety of caps and gloves (as I found they were necessary after we first started traveling). However, for a shorter, destination-specific trip, I would choose between thin and wool, rather than packing both. And, quite obviously, winter apparel is completely unnecessary if making a beach trip packing list.

The most multi-function clothing item I pack is my wrap – and, in my opinion, it is an essential item for travelers. In addition to its obvious purpose, I have used mine as a beach towel, bath towel, picnic blanket, airport blanket and bus pillow. The one I carry is black, thin and cost around $10…and I use it all the time.

I have – unfortunately – gone through several pairs of sunglasses since we started traveling. I started with my favorite – and expensive – pair of  Maui Jim sunglasses , but lost them while in Ireland. After that, I went ultra-cheap…and wasn’t surprised when three consecutive pairs broke just after a few weeks of use. I currently travel with a moderately-priced pair of polarized sunglasses, which are sufficient…but not heartbreaking if they get lost or broken. (That said, I am looking forward to the day I upgrade to Maui Jim’s again!)

List of What To Pack for Outerwear

  • 1 lightweight zip up fleece (with zip pockets)
  • 1 water resistant jacket (which fits over fleece)
  • 2 fashion scarves (or a secret zippered pocket Travel Scarf )
  • 1 versatile  wrap
  • 1 baseball cap (or travel hat )
  • 1 thin winter cap
  • 1 warm winter cap
  • 1 pair of thin winter gloves (with touchscreen functionality)
  • 1 pair of wool mittens
  • Sunglasses for travel

Travel Shoes: Packing Advice

When it comes to shoes, I think most travelers can get by with just 3 pairs. Shoes take up too much space to pack any more than that. Make sure the shoes you choose for your trip go with all of your outfits and – most importantly – that they are comfortable for exploring.

For more detailed information about what shoes to pack for your trip, read our blog post, The Best Travel Shoes !

Shoes for Travel Packing Checklist

  • 1 pair walking shoes for sightseeing and hiking
  • 1 pair casual shoes (or casual travel flats or foldable flats )
  • 1 pair flip flops

TRAVEL TOILETRIES LIST

When it comes to your toiletries packing list, it is important to strike a balance between space-saving items and short-changing yourself. Our best recommendation when packing toiletries is to consider the overall length of your trip. If you are packing for two weeks or less, it is best to pack travel-size toiletries.

That said, bathroom essentials are available all around the world, so replacing these items while traveling is not likely an issue. If you are packing for a long trip, it might be better to bring some full size toiletries (but it really depends on where you are going and how much it would cost to replace them at your destination).

Pro Tip : One more thing to consider is that the price of sunscreen and shaving cream is ridiculously inflated in some of the top destinations around the world, so it’s best to pack an ample supply.

Essential Travel Toiletries Tips

Re-fillable travel bottles are the way to go for bathroom essentials like lotions and shampoo. Many travelers swear by the GoToob brand. If you don’t have travel size bottles, however, many travel-size items are sold together in a convenient toiletry travel kit .

I used to travel with disposable facial cloths (cut into halves or quarters to make the box last longer), but now just use regular soap to wash my face. I have also used soap or hair conditioner instead of shaving cream.

Essential Travel Toiletries List

  • Toiletry bag with hanger (for bathrooms where there is a hook, but no counter space)
  • Travel size Bar Soap (just in case it is not provided at our accommodations)
  • Shampoo Conditioner 2-in-1 (in 3-ounce, refillable bottle )
  • Travel size Shaving Cream
  • Travel size Hair Brush
  • Electric Toothbrush
  • Travel size Toothpaste
  • Retainers (with case and special brush)
  • Unscented Body Lotion (in 3-ounce, refillable bottle )
  • Facial Cleansing Wipes and/or Individual Makeup Remover Wipes
  • Everyday Facial Moisturizer with Sunscreen
  • Full or Travel size Deodorant
  • Kleenex travel pack
  • Toilet paper (folded in a snack-size ziplock or these handy travel rolls )
  • Tweezers, Nail Clippers, Nail File Kit
  • Cuticle Cream
  • Quick-dry Washcloth

Makeup and Travel Essentials for Women: Advice for What To Pack

While we do include makeup on this packing list for women, I recommend keeping it simple with just a few makeup travel bag essentials.

Also, ladies, don’t forget to put feminine products on your travel essentials list! In some countries – like many in South America and several in Europe – the choice of feminine products isn’t as liberal as in other parts of the world (like the United States). If you have a preference for tampons, you should pack them, as they may not be available where you are traveling. Some female travelers like to use the Diva Cup .

Women Travel Essentials List

  • Face Powder
  • Face Powder Brush and Concealer Brush
  • Eyelash Curler (travel size)
  • Feminine products
  • Simple Fashion Jewelry

Travel First Aid Bag: Advice for Packing Lists

My first aid travel bag is one of my must-have travel items. I carry an assortment of medications (both prescription and over the counter) that are within easy reach if I need them.

Medicine bottles can take up a lot of space and it can be tempting to just mix all the medications together, which isn’t ideal. I use small, individual  jars  with screw caps to store medications – and use a marker to label each bottle. A weekly pill box could also work in a travel first aid kit.

For more of our tips, read our blog post Staying Healthy While Traveling !

What We Pack In For Travel

What we pack in is just as important as the items on our packing checklist. When flying to a destination, you will need to consider whether you want to deal with checked luggage or carry on only – as that can have a big impact on your list of what to pack. If you do decide to check a bag, read our tips on how to avoid your luggage getting lost .

We carry backpacks, rather than suitcases, because we think it is a more efficient way to travel. You can read more about the pros and cons of both in our article, Backpack vs Suitcase !

Either way, the actual size of your luggage is a major consideration when creating your packing list for traveling. Both your luggage size and weight can incur extra baggage fees if traveling by plane.

Travelers attempting to avoid extra fees will likely want to stick to a Trip Essentials list – rather than including any just-in-case items that can be purchased on arrival if needed.

  • Packing Cubes

Packing Cubes are the top item on our travel accessories list (and one of our best overall packing tips)! We splurged on packing cubes and compression bags before we started traveling full-time – and it was, without a doubt, one of the very best pre-travel purchases we made.

We cannot imagine traveling without them as they help to save space and organize our travel gear. For more details, read about the benefits of Packing Cubes in our post, 5 Ways Packing Cubes Make Travel Easier !

I travel with a Messenger Bag – which doubles as my Carry-On and my Day Pack. When traveling by plane, it is essential to take a carry-on size personal item onto the plane that will fit under your seat. We feature other styles of day bags in our blog post, Which is the Best Day Pack for Travel ?

What Bags To Pack: Travelers Packing Checklist

  • Lowe Alpine Walkabout 45 backpack (similar to this backpack ) &  Osprey Farpoint (for Kris)
  • Messenger Bag or other Day Bag
  • Compression Bags
  • Passport and document organizer (for extra credit cards, plus extra copies of passports and travel documents)
  • Money Belt and Bra Stash or Neck Pouch
  • Wallet and Small purse
  • Foldable, reusable shopping bag

Trip Documents

I have covered the top things to pack for a trip, but don’t forget to put your trip documents on your Travel Necessity list!

Plane tickets and boarding passes, hotel reservation information and trip insurance documentation all need to be packed in your bag. And, don’t forget your driver’s license, credit cards and cash.

For an International Packing List, make sure you have your passport and international driver’s license (if needed). I also highly recommend including a No-International-Fee credit card for your Overseas Travel Packing List – to avoid paying extra fees. It’s also wise to make copies of important documents to pack separately from the originals – just is case.

Also pack your Travel Planner with your trip itinerary, hotel reservations and other trip details. Don’t have a trip planner? Use our Printable Travel Planner to keep track of your trip plans!

Tips for Specific Packing Lists

My Ultimate Travel List covers the entire contents of my luggage for full-time, Around The World travel. But what if you are a traveler seeking a 2 Week Travel Packing List or need a packing list for beach vacation? No worries – using my Ultimate Packing Checklist as a base and a few of my top tips, you can create your best checklist for traveling.

What To Pack for a Week Trip – Checklist Tips

Creating a packing checklist for vacation for a week is not that different from my worldwide travel pack list. That said, travelers creating a One Week Packing List will certainly want to swap out a few items from my list of travel essentials above.

Rather than choosing items to pack for a trip that work in both hot and cold climates, select apparel and accessories for your One Week Travel Packing list that are in season.

For example, if going to a cold weather destination, you likely won’t need to pack capris, shorts, a skirt or skort (but you still may want to pack one dress for an evening out). However, instead of just eliminating these items, you want to swap them out for cold weather items – like another pair of jeans and a comfy pair of sweatpants.

Additionally, for a 1-Week Vacation Packing Checklist, determine what Odds and Ends and Electronic items are necessary for your trip. Items like a combination lock, sleep sack and a laptop might not need to be packed for your trip.

What To Pack for a 2 Week Trip – Checklist Tips

Packing for a two week trip requires little adjustment from my detailed packing list above – but only if you have access to a washing machine.

Travelers creating a 2 Week Packing List without access to laundry facilities at the halfway mark of their trip will be required to either pack a lot more clothing or do sink laundry.

That said, travelers not planning on doing laundry during their two week trip do not necessarily need to pack 14 complete outfits. Pants and sweatshirts that go over another shirt could possibly be worn more than once on your trip without being washed.

As you make your two week travel packing list, resist the temptation to pack more than you need for your trip – as heavy luggage will weigh you down!

Beach Vacation Travel Necessities List

Beach vacations require a specific list of travel essentials that differs slightly from my outlined list above.

For a dedicated beach vacation, I highly recommend bringing at least 2 (if not 3) swimsuits so that each suit can be rinsed and have time to dry in between beach and pool sessions.

Additionally, your Beach Essential Travel Packing List needs to include ample sun protection. It is wise to bring plenty of sunscreen (either a large sunscreen that will need to be checked or two TSA-approved size carry on bottles of sunscreen ) – as well as a travel hat that will provide shade from the sun. Water shoes , a beach towel, a waterproof bag for your phone and snorkel gear are other travel packing essentials for the beach.

Complete Travel Check Off List

I have listed every item that I pack for traveling in order to help you come up with your ultimate list. That said, travel packing lists are very personal – and not necessarily the same for every single trip.

To get started with your perfect Vacation Travel Packing list, it’s best to write down the items you intend to pack in your suitcase. To help, we have created an ideal Travel Packing List template. If you want our printable lists for packing, get them here .

Hajj and Umrah Planner

The following is a comprehensive checklist of items to take with you on your journey. Don’t feel obligated to take everything on this list (other than the travel essentials), rather take those items that you feel are necessary.

  • 1 Travel Essentials
  • 4 Clothing & Accessories
  • 5 Toiletries/Hygiene
  • 6 Medication
  • 7 Electronics
  • 8 Days of Hajj
  • 9 Other Items

Please also bear in mind that many of these items can be purchased from local shops in Makkah and Madinah so if you want to travel light, that option is available.

Travel Essentials

Passport including visa documentation.

  • The Hajj authorities will take your passport upon arrival in Saudi Arabia and will return it to you when departing.

Proof of Vaccination

  • All pilgrims from all countries must produce a valid certificate of vaccination against quadrivalent (A/C/Y/W135) meningococcal meningitis.
  • Depending on what country you’re from, you may also need to have valid certificates of vaccinations against yellow fever and polio.

Read more about vaccinations here .

Passport Sized Photos

  • Take at least 4 additional photographs with you to Saudi Arabia. These may be needed for documents and procedures during your journey.

Saudi riyals

  • Take a minimum of about 450 riyals (£100, $120), which will help you with your immediate expenses upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, until you become familiar with getting your money exchanged locally.
  • Take a sufficient amount of money to cover your expenditure.
  • Draw up a budget before departure.
  • You can exchange your money at the airport upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, at local banks or money exchangers (sarraf) in Makkah and Madinah (recommended).

Debit/Credit Card

  • Can be used to withdraw money from an ATM if your money runs out.

Emergency Contact Numbers

  • Group leader.
  • Your country’s consulate.

Photocopy of Passport

Valid tickets, full travel itinerary, pocket quran.

  • Although copies of the Quran will be available in the mosque, it’s more convenient to have your own. This will allow you to remain seated without the need to get up and find a copy or return it, possibly causing you to lose your spot in the mosque.
  • Don’t forget to remove it from your pocket before you go to the bathroom.
  • There are many pocket-sized books which contain supplications from the Quran and Sunnah which can be recited throughout your journey.
  • Use those du’a books which have translations of each supplication so you know the meaning of what you’re reciting.
  • Make a collection of supplications you’d like to make during your journey, especially during the Day of Arafat , in a notepad in your native language.
  • The Prophet ﷺ
  • Our pious predecessors M
  • Your family and relatives
  • The entire Muslim community, especially those suffering around the world
  • Those who have passed away

Tasbeeh or Digital Dhikr Counter

  • Dhikr counters are very convenient.

Seven-Bead Tasbeeh

  • To keep count of your circuits during Tawaf and Sa’i .
  • Can be used outside the Haram or on roads due to traffic or crowds.
  • It can prove very useful during travel and can double up as a sun shield.
  • You can purchase lightweight and portable travel prayer mats that fit into your pocket or bag.

Compass for the Qibla

  • This may be needed during travel.

Hajj/Umrah Guide Book

  • A pocket-sized Hajj/Umrah guidebook can be referred to just in case you happen to forget something.

Hard-Shell Suitcase

  • A good quality suitcase with a hard case and a built-in locking system is recommended.
  • Avoid soft, vinyl suitcases as these can easily be cut open by thieves or ill-intentioned individuals.
  • Don’t take your favourite suitcase or a very expensive one as it will most certainly be knocked around during your journey and accumulate some wear and tear.
  • Your suitcase should be medium in size (maximum 70 cm in length).
  • Travelling with very large suitcases can be very difficult.

Suitcase Locks & Keys

Luggage tags.

  • If you’re performing Hajj, pack a lightweight backpack or travelling bag for your stay and journey between Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.

Read more about baggage here .

Clothing & Accessories

  • Avoid buying a very thin cotton Ihram – these may stick to you and become uncomfortable if you sweat.
  • The thicker cotton garment or towelling (terry cloth) is preferable and can later double up as towels/blankets etc.
  • Take another set just in case the first set becomes impure.

Safety Pins/Clips for Ihram

  • A safety/pin clip can be used to fasten the upper garment of the Ihram so it does not fall from the shoulders.

Waist Pouch or Neck Pouch

  • Keep your valuables such as money, documents, debit/credit cards and keys in a good quality waist pouch or neck pouch.
  • Wear your pouch at all times and ensure you don’t leave your accommodation without it.
  • Be vigilant of pickpockets and thieves, particularly in crowded areas.
  • Hold on to your pouch in crowded areas to ensure it doesn’t get stolen.
  • Your pouch may be inspected by the authorities at the entrances of the Haramain in Makkah and Madinah.

Comfortable, Loose-Fitting Clothes

  • Take comfortable, loose-fitting garments for when you’re not in Ihram.
  • Take clothes that require little to no ironing, are easily washed and are appropriate for the journey.
  • One set of clothes usually lasts one day.
  • For men, the Saudi Thobe/Jubbah and the Indo-Pak Shalwar Qameez are ideal.
  • For women, the Abaya is the best option.

Bathroom Slippers

  • Take some decent, waterproof slippers that can be worn to the bathroom.

Sandals x 2

  • Whilst you’re in Ihram, your ankles and the top part of your foot (around the shoelace area) need to remain uncovered.
  • A flat, soft pair of walking sandals is recommended.
  • You will be doing a lot of walking during the days of Hajj so they must be comfortable and ideally, waterproof.
  • Buy a pair well in advance of your journey and wear those shoes regularly so they can be worn in and become more comfortable.

Trainer/Sneakers

  • For when you’re not in the state of Ihram.
  • This type of footwear is ideal for performing rites like Rami as they provide grip and balance.

Shoe Bag/String Bag

  • When entering the Haramain, you can put your footwear inside the bag and take it with you to avoid losing them.
  • Your shoes can be left on the racks although there is a chance you may lose them.

Jumper/Jacket

  • If travelling during the winter (November to February), it can get fairly cool during the night and the early part of the morning so you may want to pack a jumper/jacket.
  • To wear with your shoes.
  • The marble tiles in the Haramain can get very cold on occasion so it’s a good idea to wear socks around this area.
  • Wearing sunglasses around the Haramain can protect you from the sun’s glare which often reflects off the white marble, potentially causing problems for those with sensitive eyes.
  • Prayer hat/scarf for men to protect your head from the sun (when not in Ihram).
  • Hijab for women.

Folding Umbrella

  • This can be purchased in Makkah.
  • Buy a white umbrella rather than a black one as black absorbs heat.
  • Avoid buying one with a sharp point as this can cause injury to other pilgrims in crowded areas.
  • You may not be able to take it inside the Haram.

Toiletries/Hygiene

  • Large and Small.
  • Not all hotels provide towels.

Toothbrush/Miswaak

  • Must be fragrance-free in Ihram.
  • Travel-sized toothpaste will be enough.

Shampoo/Conditioner

Bar of soap, liquid soap.

  • Can be used as both shampoo and body wash.

Toilet Rolls/Pocket Tissues

  • Very useful in Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah (during the days of Hajj).
  • Very useful to freshen up, especially during the days of Hajj.

Anti-Bacterial Hand Sanitizer

Hairbrush/comb.

  • Can only be used outside the state of Ihram.

Shaving Machine/Disposable Razors

  • If you want to shave/cut your hair yourself, rather than go to the barber.
  • Don’t pack razors in your hand luggage at the airport as they will be confiscated.

Deodorant/Anti-Perspirant

Perfume/attar.

  • Not to be used in Ihram.

Suction Hooks

  • To hang your Ihram in the cubicle when using the bathroom facilities in Mina and Arafat.

Small Mirror

Nail cutter.

  • Don’t pack this in your hand luggage at the airport as it may be confiscated.

Small Scissors

Sanitary pads, toiletries bag.

  • For your toiletries.

Current/Regular Medication

  • E.g. Inhaler if you have asthma, insulin if you have diabetes etc.

Cold & Flu Relief Medication

  • The probability of getting a cold during Hajj is very high.

Pain Relief Tablets

  • Over-the-counter drugs for headaches, stomach aches, etc.

Travel Sickness Tablets

Moisturising cream.

  • For dry skin.

Cream/Balm/Lotion

  • For skin irritation.
  • For cracked/dry skin on heels.

Throat Lozenges/Spray and Cough Syrups

  • For coughs and sore throats.

Vitamin C Supplements

  • Take one daily.

Diarrhoea Tablets

  • E.g. Imodium for an upset stomach.
  • Inner thigh chafing is a problem often faced by men whilst in Ihram.
  • Men are advised to apply Vaseline or another non-scented moisturiser to the area.

Plasters/Blister Plasters/Bandages

  • For cuts, burns and blisters.
  • To minimise the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Muscle Pain Ointments/Creams

  • For muscular/joint aches and pains.
  • E.g. Deep heat muscle rub.

Oral Rehydration Salts

  • To treat dehydration especially due to diarrhoea.
  • Available in powder and tablet form.
  • Those with high blood pressure must seek medical advice before taking it.
  • Tablets can give you an energy boost.
  • Powder can be mixed with water to make a nutritious drink – it’s very refreshing in the heat and crowded areas.

Most over-the-counter medicines are available in pharmacies in Makkah and Madinah. Read more about health and medication here .

Electronics

Universal travel adapter.

  • There is no real standard type of plug – you will come across sockets for 2-pin round plugs and 2-pin flat plugs like the ones used in Europe and 3-pin plug sockets like in the United Kingdom.
  • Some rooms have both 2-pin and 3-pin plug sockets.

Mobile Phone

  • To keep in touch with members of your group, friends and family and people back home.
  • Make sure your phone is unlocked before leaving home.
  • Local sim cards are available in phone shops in Makkah and Madinah.
  • Some travel agents include Saudi sim cards as part of their package.
  • Write down your own mobile phone number and that of other group members in case you get lost.

Saudi Sim Card

  • You’ll need a local sim card to make phone calls.
  • If you feel you won’t be using your phone much, you can avoid getting a sim card and use the WiFi at your hotel to make calls.

Mobile Phone Charger

Portable charger/power bank.

  • To charge your mobile phone and other electronics.
  • Look for a good quality, lightweight one.
  • Multiple input power banks will allow you to charge more than one device at a time.

E-reader/Smart Tablet

  • To read e-books/listen to Quran recitation etc.
  • If you feel this would be a distraction, don’t take it.

Earphones/Headphones

Wrist watch.

  • To listen to the Khutba (sermon) at Arafat.

Alarm Clock

  • If your mobile phone doesn’t have an alarm facility.
  • If your mobile phone doesn’t have an MP3 player facility.

Torch/Flashlight

  • If your mobile phone doesn’t have a torch/flashlight facility.
  • Useful when collecting pebbles in Muzdalifah.

Travel Iron

  • If needed, only to be used at your hotel.

Travel Kettle

Digital travel scales.

  • To measure the weight of your luggage.

4-Gang Extension Lead

  • For your time in Mina.

Portable Fan/Cooling Device

  • Days of Hajj

Inflatable Air Mattress

  • Useful in Mina and Muzdalifah.
  • Plastic ones are sufficient.

Straw Hajji Mat

  • A straw/plastic mat with a blow-up pillow that can be used in Muzdalifah.

Inflatable Pillow

  • Can be used in the aeroplane or in Muzdalifah.

Light Blanket/Bed Sheet

  • For when collecting stones to pelt the Jamarat.
  • Alternatively, you can use a bottle.

Travel neck pillow.

  • Very useful for long journeys.
  • Helpful in Mina as you will be able to hear others snoring.

Thank you so much ok.

Thank you so much

Really super. all info. in one. May Allah SWT bless you ! wish you more success with your blog.

Very helpful and practical compilation list of items. JazakaAllah khair kaseerun

Masha Allah Very helpful article

The list is very fantastic it makes life very easy for me for my luggage.

This is a wonderful list, the comments from others really helps. Planning to go first time but unclear about a couple of things. 1. The main luggage stays in the hotel when you travel to Mina so I assume you take only the essentials in a backpack. 2. I read you have to leave your backpack (the essentials i plan to carry) at Mina when you got Arafat. Are the items safe from theft? Can you take the full backpack with you or do you need to leave this in Mina? 3. If you have to leave it, is it best to seperate the packing for the items you will need to take with you to Muzdalifah/Arafat?

Thanks in advance

Masha Allah a very comprehensive list! I have been to umrah several times but going this time with a large group and this is the best list/website i have come across to help prepare for umrah which i am sharing with the group. May Allah reward the authors!

I am so obliged.. Jazak Allah khair for such a beautiful list ❤️ helped a lot

جزاكم الله خير الجزاء

Nice information

Thank you so very much for the very detailed and thoughtful list. Going for the first time and was nervous about the whole thing but now a lot relaxed, Jazakallah, May Allah reward you for this.

Very useful, thank you very much

Thank you So much!!!!! Great and useful details for people.

Thanks you so much this is very helpful…. Nice one.

Lot of Thanks.

Thank you very much . Very useful Jazak Allah

Thanks very much, going for the first time, inshaAllah, so this is very useful. I appreciate.

Great list thank you. Sudacreem I also recommend for those people in the state of Ihram you might end up rubbing your thighs together and cause skin to tear causing blisters. So it will be good to have some to help. Including blister plasters or a small first aid kit. Like one of the brother said there are many stores out there. And one thing is a god send during hajj to replace lost salts – take some salted snacks such as Bombay mix / salted nuts etc they are such a blessing to replenish lost Salts. Energy bars. And definitely diaralyte. Multipoint usb charger to help each other and charge many phones in mina. May Allah accept your hajj and umrah. Ameen.

Jazakallahu khairan for your sharing

Jazaakumullah Khairan Appreciate the very thoughtfully developed list of things to take. Very helpful for me and my husband as we finalize our shopping.

Great list indeed, but I do want to say something.

Last year I’ve taken just about all the items listed here that I’ve collected through lists such as this one and I tell you most of it I haven’t used then again better safe than sorry.

1. There are tons of stores and markets around Mecca and you can buy just about anything there except fragrance free stuff that I’ve seen 2. For men I think it best to just buy your daily clothes to wear (thobes are like 15-20 riyal($4.5) on the street). You’re gonna wanna buy some anyways 3. I think over the door hook would be a better option for Mina (that’s just my preference) 4. Bring some plastic bags that you can keep your clothes in while you shower in Mina 5. Barber charges like 10-15 Riyal so no need for machine guys. Besides most of those barbers are poor and your few riyals is well spent trust me 6. I’d recommend Hajj Safe brand of belt or pouch whatever you wanna call it. Reason is because it is wire reinforced and cannot be cut. For men once you fold your Ihram around your waist put your pouch on, clip it in before a final fold of Ihram. This way it will be super tight grip and also help as belt for your bottom piece. 7. Guys please follow the advice about Vaseline. I didn’t and I suffered badly. 8. I recommend you take one large camping towel. It dries super fast and fits in a small ziploc bag 9. Drink hot drinks instead of cold while in Mina and Arafaat. I know it sounds crazy but it works to keep you cool, trust me.

May Allah swt accept all our good deed and forgive our bad ones. Ameen.

Thank you for your comments and input. Did you used a pack bag during Hajj at Mina & Muzdalifah?

Backpack definitely yes – you take your essentials. And if you have room you carry extra water bottles with you 🙂

That is alot of items, however you have carefully carefully thought of the whole process and all items are very relevant and useful. This is good planning. Thank you

Thanks you so much that was very helpful Will plz guide us from where i can buy all these items in karachi

Very useful and relevant. Thank you

Jazak Allaah khayran for this checklist, I have found it super useful

Thank you so much your blog is awesome

The Top Five Essential Skills You Need To Build A Successful Business

Starting a business is an exhilarating journey that requires more than just a great idea. It demands a versatile skill set and a resilient mindset.

While entrepreneurship is often glamorized in media and popular culture, portraying a life filled with success, freedom, and excitement, the reality can be markedly different and far less glamorous. Many entrepreneurs face a myriad of challenges that are seldom highlighted.

The journey of building a business from the ground up is filled with financial risk, long hours, and significant personal sacrifice. Unlike traditional employment, entrepreneurs often lack a steady paycheck, benefits like health insurance, and job security, which can lead to intense stress and uncertainty.

The responsibility of making all the critical decisions can be overwhelming and isolating. This can take a toll on mental and physical health, as well as personal relationships. Understanding these challenges is crucial for anyone considering this path, as it demands resilience, adaptability, and a strong support network to navigate the highs and lows of entrepreneurial life.

Because the journey of entrepreneurship has its challenges, here are the top five essential skills every entrepreneur should cultivate to enhance their chances of success:

1. adaptability.

In the fast-paced world of startups, change is constant and often unpredictable. The ability to adapt to shifting markets, consumer needs, and technology can distinguish between thriving and struggling businesses. Entrepreneurs must be willing to pivot their strategies, embrace new trends, and revise their business models as necessary. This flexibility can open up new opportunities and help avoid potential pitfalls.

‘Challengers’ Reviews: Does Zendaya Tennis Movie Score With Critics?

‘baby reindeer’ star says real martha searches need to stop, patriots select north carolina quarterback drake maye with no 3 pick in nfl draft, 2. financial management.

Understanding the numbers is crucial. Effective financial management encompasses budgeting, forecasting, managing cash flow, and making informed investment decisions. Entrepreneurs must be able to read and interpret financial statements to understand their business's financial health and make strategic decisions. This skill ensures that a business can sustain operations, fund growth, and achieve profitability.

3. Strategic Thinking and Planning

Vision without strategy is merely a dream. Entrepreneurs must be able to think strategically to set viable goals and develop actionable plans to reach them. This involves analyzing competitive environments, identifying business opportunities, and assessing resources. Strategic thinking also includes risk management where you identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them effectively.

4. Communication and Networking

Being able to articulate ideas clearly and persuade others is invaluable. Entrepreneurs often need to communicate with a variety of stakeholders including employees, investors, customers, and partners. Effective communication enhances leadership, fosters team alignment, and attracts investment. Additionally, networking is essential for building relationships that can lead to new opportunities, valuable advice, and increased support.

5. Leadership

Ultimately, the success of a business often reflects the quality of its leadership . Entrepreneurs must be able to inspire and motivate their team, manage resources efficiently, and lead by example. Good leaders cultivate a positive company culture, delegate effectively, and make decisions that align with the company’s values and objectives.

The bottom line is that these skills are interlinked and can significantly amplify an entrepreneur's ability to succeed. While some entrepreneurs might naturally excel in one area, it’s important to develop a balanced skill set or build a team that collectively possesses these strengths. Continuous learning and personal development can help entrepreneurs adapt and thrive in the ever-evolving business landscape.

By nurturing these top five skills, entrepreneurs can not only navigate the complexities of launching and growing a business but also pave the way for sustained success and innovation.
