Journey of Love 18+ review: Plenty to laugh and think about

Love and politics form the core of Arun D Jose's new film 'Journey of Love 18+', which released in theatres on Friday. The movie, like his previous outing 'Jo and Jo', has a generous mix of humour, some of which is truly enjoyable, though it sometimes falls short of the hilarity in 'Jo and Jo', that was a simpler tale of sibling quarrels. 

Though the treatment remains the same, 18+ essentially tries to go a little more deeper by exploring the risks of attempting to tie the knot when one is too young. Akhil (Naslen) is a Left-wing worker who is in love with the local secretary Raveendran (Manoj K U)'s daughter. Their marriage is a strict no-no since Akhil's family members were Raveendran's labourers.

Since a proper marriage is out of question, Akhil along with his cronies devise a plan for him to run away with his lover. What happens next forms the crux of the story. The makers have thrown in some interesting dialogues, party politics and small twists, which ensures the movie is engrossing.

The events in the first half are clearly more exciting than those in the second half, which do not keep pace with the scenes prior to the interval.

The post-marriage scenario felt like it was stretched a little too long. 

The court scene, however, was a perfect balance of humour and realism, giving the viewers much to think about. There are no loud arguments, nor any heart-rending scenarios. In fact, the lawyers hardly make any arguments, yet the scenes make sense. Kudos to Arun and his team for trying to bring up an interesting matter in court.

Though Nikhila Vimal only has a guest appearance, it definitely adds to the humour. The makers have given Mathew Thomas an interesting entry and exit in the film. He does not have the usual combo scenes with Naslen, which is a refreshing change.

Manoj as the local secretary and a father to a grown-up daughter leaves an impression on the audience. Meenakshi Dhinesh, who has previously worked in films like 'Porinju Mariyam Jose' and 'Iratta', also delivers a good performance as Akhil's girlfriend. The two share a good chemistry onscreen. YouTuber Saaf Bros, who is known for his unique content, nails his role as one of Akhil's friends.

Overall, the film has a good, youthful vibe. However, it is not as free-flowing as it's predecessors of the same genre, like 'Thanneer Mathan Dinangal', among others.

A rom-com without any rom and com.

The film lost me by the 30 minute mark and whatever followed was boring as hell . Whatever they said in the form of comedy was dry af and made me go like "ugh, ayye". Shokam aayirunnu motham. The last half an hour of this movie is so bizzare and makes you go like "what the hell ". Well idk the rules in 2009 so can't fact check what happened. Ee kaalam aayirunnu enkil Avan jail kidannene.

Watched FDFS.

An engaging slice-of-life comedy that takes some dig at a ever-relevant socio-political hypocrisy. Could’ve done without that spoon-feeding bit in the end, but that’s all right. Naslen and the entire supporting cast has done a good job. It’s fun while it lasts.

Slightly better than Jo and Jo and might be the best one that came out in the Nalsen-Mathew combination( Mathew is hardly in the movie…hehe) in the recent past.

Gist of the Story

Akhil and Athira are in love, and Athira told Akhil about traveling with him because of family worries. Journey of Love 18 talks about their sudden choice to run away together and their reasons for doing so.

Detailed Plot

Athira and Akhil have been dating for three years. Athira confided in Akhil at one point that she was prepared to travel with him because she was afraid her family would send her to Gujarat. They choose a nice day to run away. However, Rajesh, who eloped and wed his love interest, is the person, Akhil, and his buddies Renju and Pattar decide to ask for aid from. In defiance of their parents’ desires, Rajesh assists the couple in getting married. But Raveendran, Athira’s father, reports the kidnapping to the police. He is a powerful figure in the Communist Party. Arjun, Athira’s brother, opposes the nuptials as well. Deepak, a close friend of Akhil who works at parties, aids the couple in dealing with this circumstance. The story’s main conflict is what happens next.

Artistes’ Performances

Naslen does a good job portraying someone who does not know what to do and is vulnerable Akhil. Meenakshi gave a really strong performance as Athira in her debut main role. In the serious role, Mathew Thomas does well. Within the theatre, there is a raucous laughing from Safwan and Anshid portraying Renju and Pattar. In a few scenes, they absolutely shine.Even though Nikhila Vimal just makes a cameo, it really heightens the hilarity. Naslen and Mathew Thomas, who have been in a number of films together, share less screen time this time around. Nikhila Vimal and Thomas are merely given cameo parts, but Binu Pappu is given a longer one as the “experienced” adult assisting the children in eloping.

Direction / Technical Side

Journey of Love by 18 Plus is a typical love story that depicts the typical uncertainty between lovers, eloping, legally marrying, and other vital elements of a rom-com. The verbal exchanges between the protagonists during the first half of the film are mostly what keeps us interested. The picture genuinely gains strength in the second half. 18 Plus, which is set in northern Kerala, makes reference to how political parties are significant in the cadre and workers’ everyday life. Arun. D. Jose, who directed his first movie, Jo & Jo, last year, has teamed up with co-writer Raveesh Nath to create another story in the movie 18+. They are trying to come up with a new plot from scratch. The inclusion of engaging conversation, party politics, and little surprises by the filmmakers assures that the film will keep you interested. Even though there are a few stretched-out scenes that drag a little bit, they can be ignored due to the fun quotient that has been added by the artists. Christo Xavier, who does a wonderful job, wrote the songs and the background music for 18 Plus. The film benefits from the work of cinematographer Satheesh Kurup.

Verdict; “Journey of Love 18 +” explores relationships’ challenges and uncertainties, including eloping and legal proceedings. Though some parts may feel a bit extended, the talented cast compensates for it by delivering an enjoyable experience. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Introduction

Thank God It Is Friday and what better start to the weekend than reviewing a Malayalam film straight up. With that, I finished watching the new Malayalam film Journey Of Love 18+ which is now streaming on SonyLiv. While my love for Malayalam cinema remains unparalleled, this year has been a bit of a wobbly year for the Malayalam film industry. And one of the reasons for the same has been the over reliance on the slice of life genre with every other film being attempted in this genre. There is nothing wrong with that, and to the credit of the industry they have tied up the main genre with other sub-genres as well, but the genre also comes with its share of limitation while also running the risk of being repetitive. And I was kind of skeptical venturing into Journey Of Love 18+ for exactly this reason, although I knew nothing about the film. So then, does Journey Of Love 18 + manage to impress, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Journey Of Love 18+ follows the story of a young couple, deeply in love who decide to elope. But their decision might have some unforeseen repercussions in their lives and the society. The story here is simple and this has often been the trademark of the Malayalam film industry to pick up stories with stray events and transform them into some interesting screenplays. And that can be applied to this film as well wherein the screenplay does pack in underlying themes of politics and the shortcomings of the society while packaging them in a hilarious satirical drama that perhaps could have been slightly trimmed for a crisper watch. The drama does open with the introduction of the protagonist, a young teenage boy who suddenly gets a call from his girlfriend who wishes that they elope and marry. The setting is of the former trying to set ablaze a bus in the midst of a political move which is indicative of the high political tensions which are prevalent in the vicinity. Yet, a song playing out through the rolling titles does give you a background of how the budding love story began to blossom over the years and it did seem like a sweet little charming one. Instantly, the viewers get a sense that this drama is laced with humour and is not as serious as it would otherwise have been given its subject and setting. The proceedings are interesting and quite smartly penned, balancing the humour which originates through its setting of the protagonist exploring different ways to elope with his college sweetheart. And these events, set against the political backdrop of the area where the drama is set in, does make for a hilarious turn of events. The humour is situational and often does tickle your funny bone with respect to the character traits and the immaturity of the protagonists. There is a sense of innocence to the proceedings that adds to the charm of the rrama that traverses through different situations that the characters find themselves in. The only issue for me was that the drama began to go around it circles thus getting repetitive. The biggest flaw in the drama is that the subject in hand did seem to be more suited for a short film. And that is reflective of the fact that the situations are repetitive, although supremely watchable. A clever little twist in the final 30 minutes does justify the title but it was also a case of the writers trying to hard to convey the point. There is a sense of spoon feeding that does take place in the backend of the drama wherein the drama could so easily have tapped into the political and vested interests of the concerned people(perhaps a notch higher). The political angle is something that I wished was explored a little more but overall, the screenplay here definitely has its moments and makes for an enjoyable watch.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are quirky and well written. The music is decent and the songs go well with the narrative. The BGM is good and blends well with the drama. The cinematography is good as well capturing some stunning frames. There were instances of minor lags in the screenplay and that did warrant a crisper edit on the editing table. Director Arun D Jose does a good job here but the limitation of the genre did reflect eventually. The writing did begin to taper towards the backend and while the director continued to create some goofy and hilarious moments, there was only so much which could be done. But the direction definitely did showcase the required flair in attempting something different.

Performances

The performances are excellent here by the ensemble cast. Rajesh Madhavan as Advocate Satish and Nikhila Vimal as Sony are subtly hilarious in their respective roles. Manoj K U as Raveendran has his moments to shine as does Shyam Mohan as Arjun. Mathew Thomas as Deepak is nicely understated in a character which is sincere and earnest. Binu Pappu as Rajesh is wonderful to watch in a hilarious little role. Saaf and Anu are outstanding in their respective roles and they definitely manage to tickle your funny bone. Meenakshi Dinesh as Athira looks so cute and everytime she came onscreen with her silly antics, she managed to put a smile on my face. There was a sense of innocence in her character that allowed the viewers to invest in her. Naslen as Akhil is simply phenomenal with a stellar presence onscreen. He doesn’t try and be funny here, often trusting the writing material and the situations to do the trick. And he comes out on top, wonderfully well!

Despite its shortcomings, Journey Of Love 18+ is a hilarious little gem with stellar performances that makes for a good one-time watch. Available on SonyLiv.

Director Arun D Jose’s romantic comedy drama film 18+ Journey of Love  - which had its theatrical release on July 7 - will soon be available on OTT. Co-written by Arun and Raveesh Nath, the film explores the theme of ‘early love marriage’. The movie received a positive response after its release in the cinemas. Starring Mathew Thomas, Naslen K Gafoor, Binu Pappu, Rajesh Madhavan and Nikhila Vimal, 18+ Journey of Love  will be streaming on SonyLIV from September 15. The film revolves around a few friends in a northern Kerala village. Naslen and Mathew, who are known for their onscreen camaraderie, play close friends in this comedy drama film. Akhil (Naslen) and Deepak (Mathew) are involved in student politics. Deepak is more of a hardcore party worker, who places his political ideology above anyone. When Akhil falls in love with Athira (Meenakshi), the daughter of a local political leader, it leads to problems in the village and between Akhil and Deepak. Akhil and Athira decide to elope against the wishes of both their families with the help of Rajesh (Binu Pappu). This and the following incidents form the plot of 18+ Journey of Love .

18+ Journey of Love  is a thrilling yet light-hearted comedy entertainer. Naslen and Mathew’s camaraderie can be seen in a different style in this movie. The film features both actors differently, compared to their previous coming-of-age dramas. Arun is recognised for his past work, particularly for helming the film Jo & Jo , which blended humour with social commentary. Jennifer love hewitt shows her three kids’ faces on memoir cover.

“9-1-1” star Jennifer Love Hewitt has kept her three kids out of the public eye for all these years, but she’s finally showing their faces on the cover of her new memoir “Inheriting Magic: My Journey Through Grief, Joy, Celebration, and Making Every Day Magical.”

For the mystical cover, her kids, Autumn James, 10, Atticus James, 8, and Aidan James, 2, surround Jennifer, who has a book open and a wand in her hand.

It is the first time that Hewitt has shown her kids’ faces, and it wasn’t an easy decision!

She told E! News, “It was the most stressful decision to show our kids or not show them. But my husband and I felt like we couldn't really tell our story without knowing who they are and how they have made our lives so full and magical."

Jennifer has been married to Brian Hallisay for over 10 years.

In the book, Hewitt opens up about her life journey after the passing of her mom Patricia in 2012.

She shared, “My kids also saved me in grief. They are gifts from my mom and have filled our hearts in such an incredible way. This book is for them!"

“I felt healed enough from losing my mom to finally be able to write about it," she emphasized. "I also have seen how creating little bits of magic for my kids and friends makes our memories and everyday lives special. I wanted to honor my mom and how much being a mom means to me and this felt like the best way."

Jennifer is thrilled to show fans “the real me.” She explained, “The mom me and not just the public version which has been so much of my life. It meant a lot in my healing journey to cry and write about my mom, to hurt and still honor her with telling people how special she was and still is in my life."

The episode was a winner in viewers and several audience demos. When compared to Season 15 , the season finale was up 88% in the 18-34 demo and 30% in the 18-49 demo in terms of viewers. The episode also saw a significant increase in ratings, with the 18-34 demo going up 67% with a 0.84 rating and 18-49 going up 28% with a 0.76 rating. Apart from the finale, Season 16 also grew in viewers and ratings, setting a record for the highest-rated season in 4 years. On social media, the season was up 111% compared to Season 15, with 514 million views, as reported by Paramount Global.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' Season 16 Was Historic In More Ways Than One

The season began with 14 drag queens competing for the crown and the prize money, and they participated in various challenges. Week after week, queens who landed at the bottom were eliminated, reducing the number of contestants and concentrating talent. This season's twist was an immunity potion that the queens who earned it could use to save themselves or another queen from elimination. In the final episode, Nymphia Wind, Plane Jane , and Sapphira Cristál battled it out for the crown, and Nymphia impressed the judges most.

Nymphia was the first queen from Taiwan, the first East Asian, and the third Asian contestant to win RuPaul's Drag Race . She dedicated her award to outsiders and her country. The President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen , congratulated her on the win with a message on Instagram:

Jennifer Love Hewitt Shares First Public Pictures of Her 3 Kids' Faces on Inheriting Magic Memoir Cover

Jennifer Love Hewitt shared the first public photo of her children 's faces in the most magical way possible!

The 9-1-1 actress, 45, shares a daughter and two sons with her husband, fellow actor Brian Hallisay . However, the couple never publicly posted pictures of their kids' faces until Wednesday, April 17.

“Here it is! My new baby!” Hewitt captioned an Instagram post while announcing her new book. 

The memoir, titled Inheriting Magic: My Journey Through Grief, Joy, Celebration, and Making Every Day Magical , was illustrated by Vanessa Rivera, according to the actress. 

On the cover, the I Know What You Did Last Summer alum sits front and center as she poses with a magic wand and a book of spells as her children — Autumn James, 10, Atticus James, 8, and Aidan James, 2 — gather around.

“I can’t believe how lucky I was to get her for this book! Moms who create magic are special!” Hewitt’s caption continued, adding, “Can’t wait for you guys to read it!”

She also spoke exclusively to E! News about the heartfelt project.

"It was the most stressful decision to show our kids or not show them," she told the outlet in an interview published Wednesday. "But my husband and I felt like we couldn't really tell our story without knowing who they are and how they have made our lives so full and magical."

Hewitt’s book will also discuss her mother Patricia Hewitt, who died in 2012 .

“This year I went thru [sic] a lot no one knew about,” the actress wrote in a Dec. 31, 2023 Instagram post, noting that she was “ grateful for that privacy .”

She added that she “learned to be a better baker,” “took chances on myself and my bigger dreams,” and “sat deeper in grief and was able to let more go.”

Hewitt told E! News she "reached a greater place of healing" while writing the book.

"But it also shows birthday parties, holidays, how to plan and some family recipes that I hold special," she continued. "As I create my brand, The Holiday Junkie, I wanted to show why I am that person and how it's a mindset and way of life not just a brand."

Inheriting Magic is set for a Dec. 10 release.

One of the joys of reading a David Nicholls novel is his seamless way with plotting and structure, his tactical use of sliding-doors moments and turning points where the reader is able to see more than the character but can do nothing except sit back and watch as the hero or heroine makes one poor, ill-informed decision after the next.

This is bread-and-butter suspense writing, but the ease and originality with which Nicholls, who is also an acclaimed screenwriter, employs the tricks of the trade means the obvious – missed calls, missed connections, missed opportunities – never feels derivative.

The depth of Nicholls’s characterisation and his vibrantly drawn backdrops give his novels the ring of authenticity. So too does his abiding preoccupation with chance, how little control we have over our lives in the end. In the world of Nicholls, this feeds into theme and technique. Delays, obstacles and adversity feature prominently in his books and work particularly well with the type of will-they-won’t-they romance storyline at the heart of his latest novel, You Are Here.

An epigraph from Austen’s Persuasion gives some idea of the terrain: a central duo who feel they are already beyond hope of finding love again. Divorced copywriter Marnie leads an increasingly solitary and contained life in the wake of the pandemic. Michael is a geography teacher in his 40s suffering from PTSD after a traumatic event. When their mutual friend Cleo, a no-nonsense deputy head, organises a group to go hiking in Cumbria, the shape of the book takes hold: a literal journey for both characters with plenty of uphill struggles and freewheeling downs in a believable and ultimately hopeful narrative of second chances.

While Marnie and the rest of the group, which includes other single people to get in the way of things, plan a short three-day adventure, Michael intends to complete a mammoth coast-to-coast, 12-day hike from St Bee’s to Robin’s Bay. This is clever storytelling that gives a tight, pressurised time frame to the romance plot, along with a natural forum for backstory as the characters get to know each other along the walk. A mix of humorous and poignant insight keeps things buoyant, as does the old classic of contrasting character types.

Nicholls is the bestselling author of Starter for Ten, The Understudy, One Day, Us and Sweet Sorrow. One Day was translated into 40 languages, selling millions of copies worldwide. His fourth novel, Us, was longlisted for the Booker Prize . His screenwriting credits include adaptations of Dickens, Hardy and most recently One Day for Netflix. His adaptation of Edward St Aubyn’s Patrick Melrose, one of the best TV series in recent years, was nominated for an Emmy and won him a Bafta.

You Are Here contains plenty of casually imparted wisdom characteristic of his writing: “[Michael] was well-liked as a teacher, more than he knew, though he could no longer pull off the larky irreverence required to be adored.” Marnie’s take on scrolling social media is that “she felt as if she was looking up at a party from beneath a lamp-post”. Back in the real world, somewhere up a treacherous hill, she begins to panic as a sombre mood takes over the hike: “Melancholy was creeping in, the kind of distilled, high-grade sadness found under a bus shelter in a rainy seaside town.”

Occasionally this talent for analogy is a drawback, as when Nicholls overextends a metaphor that doesn’t require clarification, unable to resist the bright new image. The plot also takes a while to get going. The characterisation of the leads is superb, two people who are full of flaws and mistakes and messy histories, which is to say two characters who feel fully human. Their sparky dialogue gives great momentum to the story. Nicholls writes women and men with equal flair, right down to the smallest detail: “She’d had her hair cut a week before so that it could settle a little.” The backdrop of the English hills is similarly detailed, by turns severe and sublime, the mostly bleak weather nicely incompatible with romance.

You Are Here is a compassionate and clear-eyed account of two people trying to decide whether to leave themselves open to fail, to love, again. It is vintage Nicholls, a highly relatable story of significance, that shows (forgive me) that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

Wisconsin man accused of killing, dismembering woman while on a date

Authorities relied on text messages, witnesses, security video and phone-tracking data to build a case against a man accused of killing and dismembering a Milwaukee woman with whom he was on a date, court records show.

Maxwell Anderson, 33, also of Milwaukee, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse and arson in the slaying of Sade Robinson, 19. The two went on a date April 1, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said in a criminal complaint filed last week.

A severed leg found the next day has been preliminary identified as belonging to Robinson, the complaint says. The right leg with painted toes was found near a 100-foot bluff by the water's edge in Warnimont Park.

A woman who identified herself as Robinson’s grandmother said Wednesday afternoon that she was too distraught to talk about the teenager. No one else with Robinson’s family could be reached for comment.

Anderson remains at the Milwaukee County Jail in lieu of $5 million bail, according to jail and court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Anderson’s lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon. His relatives also could not be reached.

'The toes on the feet had pink nail polish'

According to the complaint, someone reported finding the leg around 5:30 p.m. April 2.

"The leg was severed just below the hip socket and appeared to have been sawn off. The toes on the feet had pink nail polish. The leg did not appear to be decomposing," the complaint says.

One of Robinson’s friends went to Milwaukee police that evening to report that Robinson was not her on phone and did not show up at work. The friend said Robinson’s last known activity was a post on Snapchat the previous night about how she was at a bar, according to the complaint.

The city’s fire department found Robinson’s 2020 Honda Civic the morning of April 2, with heavy interior damage from a fire, the complaint alleges.

Four days later, on April 6, Milwaukee police found a human foot adjacent to train tracks and human flesh in the same area where the car had been discovered. The foot and the right leg found days earlier appeared to belong to the same person because of skin tone, size and "having matching pink nail polish," the complaint said.

'Yes I love seafood'

Investigators also focused on forensic data before Anderson was charged. Evidence included text messages Robinson and Anderson exchanged on April 1.

Using those texts, along with tracking data from Robinson’s phone, investigators pieced together a timeline of what they believe were her final hours.

In text messages, Robinson and Anderson discussed meeting at a seafood restaurant where Anderson used to work. Robinson responded, "Yes I love seafood," the complaint said.

Video from the restaurant showed the pair eating and talking for about an hour before they moved to a bar, officials said. According to the complaint, video from the bar shows Robinson exiting her car while Anderson leaves from the passenger side.

They remained at the bar until about 9:20 p.m., when data from Robinson's phone placed her near Anderson's residence, the complaint says. Her phone remained in that area until about 12:45 a.m., officials said.

Investigators used a location-sharing app on the victim's phone to track its whereabouts for the next four hours, until the battery died.

Robinson's phone appeared to be in the park where the severed leg was found from around 3 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. April 2, the complaint says.

Videos, a car ablaze and bloody bedding

In addition to witnesses, text messages and the phone-tracking data, investigators also collected other video.

Video from the area near where the severed leg was found shows a "human figure" descending the bluff toward the beach just after 3 a.m., the complaint says.

Hours later, around 7:30 a.m., video from a bus and a convenience store captured a man walking away from a burning vehicle, officials said. A witness walking by the area told investigators she saw a man get out of Robinson's car from the driver's side and toss a lit lighter inside, according to the complaint.

Anderson was allegedly seen soon after he boarded another bus heading in the direction of his home, the complaint says. The man on the second bus was wearing the exact clothing and backpack as the man seen walking away from the car fire, officials said.

Anderson was arrested during a traffic stop on April 4. A search of his car turned up a hooded coat that appeared to be the same one he wore on the bus, the complaint alleges. 

Officials say they collected evidence during a search of Anderson’s home.

“[B]lood was located on bedding in one of the bedrooms and on the walls leading towards the basement. Several gasoline containers were located in the garage/storage area,” the complaint reads.

Milwaukee County Sheriff Denita Ball thanked her detectives and Milwaukee police in a statement for their work on the case.

“With little rest and a great deal of pressure, they have remained focused and relentless, 24-hours a day. Their efforts to carefully build this case with a host of other partners to locate and tie together evidence, will go a long way towards bringing justice and, hopefully, peace to the family and loved ones of Sade Robinson.”

If he is convicted on the homicide charge, Anderson could be sentenced to life in prison, according to the criminal complaint.
