Norman Regional weight loss clinic to abruptly close, blaming Ozempic popularity

journeys staff login

Oklahomans are losing more than just belly fat to Ozempic .

Norman Regional Health System is blaming the diabetes management drug and similar medications, which have soared in popularity because of its effectiveness in helping people lose weight, for the decision to suddenly close its Journey Clinic .

There may be more to the story, however.

Journey Clinic has offered medical and surgical weight loss options for the past two decades. A message posted to Journey Clinic's website said it will close in 90 days and is not accepting any new patients. Norman Regional's CEO Richie Splitt told Becker's Hospital Review this week that the hospital has seen a decline in surgery referrals. Over the past year, weight loss surgeries have fallen by 30%.

"We've been seeing that decline in volumes over time, which led us to have some very frank conversations and then ultimately to the difficult decision to close the Journey Clinic and bariatric operations," Splitt told Becker's.

More: Weight-loss patients warned of counterfeit Ozempic as dupes popular of drug proliferate

Lana Nelson, director of metabolic and bariatric surgery at Norman Regional, was one of several medical professionals who were told this week they'd be losing their jobs.

"They think that there's no future in bariatric surgery because medications will replace what we do," said Nelson. "But the very difficult and frustrating thing is that they are not clinicians. They are administrators. They made these decisions based upon no conversations with the clinical staff who are actually there taking care of patients and seeing trends."

If you are a patient and have questions, you can call the clinic at 405-515-2049. For those patients who have already paid for services, Norman Regional said its finance team is working to issue refunds.

Bariatric surgeries were canceled without warning

The unexpected announcement caught both doctors and patients off guard.

"Some of them were called the day before their surgical procedure and told, 'I'm sorry, we're closing the clinic and we're canceling your surgery,'" said Nelson.

Preparation for bariatric surgery, which for many people is their last shot at beating the dangerous side effects of morbid obesity, can take months.

Maggie Jeter had just started seeing a doctor at Journey Clinic when she got a call canceling all future appointments. She had only one in-person visit so far, just a few days before the abrupt shutdown. She had planned to get the surgery after losing over 100 pounds on her own through diet and exercise.

More: 'Ozempic babies' are surprising women taking weight loss drugs. Doctors think they know why.

Now, if she wants to continue with that plan, she has to completely restart the process of finding a new clinic and working out arrangements with her insurer. And that's if the clinic takes her insurance.

With the patchwork of insurance compatibility and a sudden influx of new bariatric patients at existing Oklahoma clinics, Jeter said she might have to go out of state.

"For some people, it is an elective (surgery), but for some people, it's medically needed. That's my concern. They left patients in the wind who actually need it — like me," Jeter said. "What do I do?"

Nelson suspects Norman Regional didn't feel like it had enough time to wait for surgical volume to recover because of budgets and bond payment obligations. Without drastic cuts, she said, the hospital system risked losing its status as an independent organization.

She said other Norman Regional doctors working at a women's clinic in Moore also were laid off this week.

In a statement, Norman Regional said the decision to close Journey Clinic and discontinue bariatric surgical operations was based on several strategic considerations.

"We recognize the transformative impact of GLP-1 medications on weight loss treatment, and they have significantly changed the landscape of obesity treatment. It has long been our goal to align our resources with innovative technologies and advancements in order to provide the most effective care for our patients and community," spokeswoman Melissa Herron said. "This difficult decision will ultimately allow us to focus on expanding other areas of service where we see increasing demand and opportunities for growth."

Are injectable weight-loss drugs effective?

The injectable drugs, like Ozempic, have shown success in helping people lose weight. They also cause gastrointestinal side effects that have tempered the rush to try them out.

Nelson confirmed that her clinic saw a dip in patients when the drug began gaining popularity.

"But what we are seeing now is that there are a lot of patients who cannot tolerate the medications, who don't have coverage for medications or who don't have results with the medications, and so those patients actually are already coming back to us to discuss surgical options," she said.

Nelson said she's excited that the injectable drugs are available because it adds more options that a patient and their doctor can discuss. She drew an analogy, however, noting that even with the widespread use of cholesterol and heart-health drugs on the market, there's still persistent demand for cardiac surgery.

"Medications will not stop the need for bariatric surgery. Not anytime soon," she said. "And so this was purely a financial decision to abandon a program that has been serving the Norman community for 22 years."

Amazing gift of music

Although neither musically adept nor tech-savvy, I'm loving this extraordinary app, which helps me create songs in seconds that fully capture--in wondrous lyrics, rich voices, and exquisite instrumentation--anything I might wish to express. Yesterday I tried creating music on the app for the first time, hoping to come up with a song that conveyed how much I miss a good friend living far away who I don't get to see very often. The song produced for me by Suno in less than a minute bordered on the miraculous--perfectly expressing my feelings through soulful instrumentation, a lovely female singing voice, and brilliant poetic lyrics. Shared with my friend, she too was deeply moved. I can already see how this ability to make beautiful music very quickly will become extremely addictive. I'm resolved to limit myself to creating no more than ten new songs per day--a lovely new ritual while enjoying my morning coffee. This morning, the new songs created included an r&b rendition of the mixed blessings of aging; an ode to walks in Central Park; and a mellow chastisement of a friend who's become too much of a recluse of late. Mind-blowing compositions each time! And so much fun!!

Bravo! Finally.

The Suno AI music generator app is an impressive first release, offering a sleek, streamlined experience compared to its web counterpart. The app's standout feature is its beautiful typography, which enhances the overall aesthetic appeal. The user interface is less cluttered than the web version, making it easier to navigate and use. The quality of songs it generates never ceases to amaze me. While the menu options are sparse, this simplicity contributes to the app's clean look and feel. However, some users might find themselves wishing for more advanced options. There are opportunities for UI improvements, particularly in addressing minor spacing and placement issues. These don't significantly detract from the user experience but refining them would elevate the app further. The app's design and branding are particularly noteworthy, creating a visually pleasing environment for music creation. Overall, Suno AI's mobile app demonstrates a commitment to good design principles, prioritizing user experience and visual appeal. For a first release, it's a solid choice for those looking to generate AI music on the go, especially if you appreciate a well-designed, minimalist interface. With some UI refinements in future updates, this app has the potential to become even more impressive.

A Game-Changer for Music Creation!

I recently downloaded the Suno app, and I must say, it has revolutionized the way I create and interact with music. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or a novice, this app offers something truly special. User Interface: The interface is sleek, intuitive, and user-friendly. Navigating through the different features is a breeze, and the design is aesthetically pleasing, making the creative process enjoyable. Features: The variety of features is impressive. The ability to generate music from text prompts is not only innovative but also incredibly fun. Having the capability of being able to scroll through all the amazing everyone else is making is an added bonus! So much creativity out there! Performance: The app runs smoothly with no noticeable lag or crashes. The real-time feedback and quick rendering of musical pieces make the experience seamless. It’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into optimizing performance. Community and Support: The Suno Discord server is a fantastic addition. It’s a vibrant community where users can share their creations, get feedback, and collaborate. The support team is responsive and helpful, ensuring any issues or questions are addressed promptly.

Grief is a personal journey

Grief image

By Barbara Gutierrez [email protected]

Grief is a lonely journey.

It’s difficult to share because everyone experiences it in different ways.

The loss of a loved one, a divorce, losing one’s job, or a beloved pet can trigger a period of grief that can last days, weeks, months—even years.

Some who follow certain religions find comfort in the belief that there is an afterlife and that they will be reunited with their loved ones in the future. But to many, the loss can seem insurmountable.

Catherine Holder , staff psychologist at the University of Miami Counseling Center , delved into the complexities of grief, and how we can cope during these difficult times.

Catherine Holder

How can one describe grief?

“Grief often includes physiological distress, separation anxiety, confusion, yearning, obsessive dwelling on the past, and apprehension about the future,” according to the American Psychological Association. This definition only speaks to symptoms and not the function of grief or the complexity of loss. Loss can include both loss that comes from the death of a person as well as non-death losses (loss of relationship, functioning, freedoms, or lifestyle, etc.). It is also important to remember that grief is a natural and adaptive response to loss.

Much has been talked about the different stages of grief: anger, denial, etc. … Does everyone go through these stages?

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross popularized the “Five Stages of Grief Model,” and similar models suggest additional stages related to processing grief. Stage theories imply experiences occur in a certain order and that there is a final end point or resolution everyone reaches. However, current theorists move away from understanding people’s experiences in terms of stages. Grief responses are idiosyncratic and not as predictable as people once thought.  Current conceptualizations of grief place greater emphasis on honoring individual, family, and community responses to loss.

When working with students around grief, they are often surprised when we explore how their own cultures/families manage or don’t manage grief.

Some common cultural or community practices around death or grief include memorial services, funerals, or engaging in activities that acknowledge the loss (going to that person’s favorite restaurant, having some sort of keepsake in remembrance of what/who was lost). Instead of thinking of grief proceeding in stages, there is a shift to identifying and coping with loss, as well as the ability to navigate one’s life proceeding loss. A question I help students to answer is, “How do you move forward or navigate a world now that you’ve experienced this loss?”

What are some of the things one can do to help heal during these times?

Healing is unique to everyone. Sometimes, individuals can look within their own cultures and communities of origin for rituals or practices that help their communities manage loss. Therapy can also help individuals navigate loss by providing a space of empathic support to process grief as well as explore the ways individuals can adjust to their lives post-loss.

Can one prepare oneself emotionally to sustain a loss?

Loss to some degree is inevitable, and there are several factors that can mitigate the impact of a loss, like factors that foster general mental health and well-being. Some simple steps can include:

  • Develop a repertoire of self-care strategies that can help individuals manage difficult emotions. Some options may include cultivating a meditation/mindfulness practice, journaling, creating art, physical movement, etc.
  • Cultivate flexibility in one’s thinking and the ability to problem solve. If one coping strategy is not working, what else can I do? Who else can provide me with the support I need right now?
  • Identify individuals within your existing social network who can provide support and hold space for processing experiences. Perhaps leaning on the support of family, friends, or a grief support group may prove helpful in finding a way forward through one’s grief. Consider consulting with a community leader, elder, or mental health professional who can offer support.

What resources does the University have to help students, staff and/or faculty deal with grief?

Students are welcome to seek support through the University of Miami Counseling Center (UMCC). UMCC provides individual, couples, and group counseling to students. It also provides outreach programs to support the mental health and well-being of students. Employees of the University can access mental health services/support services through the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program  (FSAP).

Additionally, the Children’s Bereavement Center is an excellent local resource for individuals coping with the death of a significant person in their lives. They provide in-person and virtual peer support groups for children, adolescents, young adults, and adults.
