The Beautiful birds of Dry Tortugas National Park

Americas Oceanic National Park

Rising out of deep waters in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dry Tortugas are a migration waypoint and breeding ground for hundreds of thousands of birds. Birding enthusiasts will definitely want to bring binoculars for spotting sooty terns, masked booby, and the magnificent frigate bird, to name a few. And anglers will want to bring their rods and reels. The fish population here is also impressive, with over a dozen species to catch, including blackfin tuna, grouper, wahoo, mahi-mahi and sailfish.

Designated a national park in 1935, the seven islands that make up the Dry Tortugas are a protected area for marine life and habitats. That designation has ensured the islands remain the way Mother Nature intended. It also makes them a snorkeler’s paradise. Visitors from the world over journey here to explore the amazing ecosystem of coral reefs, mangrove islands, and calcified outcroppings.

We’ve Got Fort Jefferson & Loggerhead Key

Dry Tortugas Charters supply you with mask, snorkel, and fins, you’ll enter a beautiful underwater world—a unique ecosystem of aquatic plants and the marine creatures that depend on them. Schools of brightly colored tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, starfish, and conch cohabitate in perfect harmony. In order to maintain nature’s fragile balance, snorkelers are not allowed to touch the living coral. Please leave the reefs in the same beautiful condition in which you found them.

Like many places in the Florida Keys, snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas can be enjoyed by experts and novices alike. The shallow waters (5 to 15 feet) are easily accessible straight from the beach. Even if you’ve never snorkeled before, you’ll get right in the swim of things very quickly. So have fun. And please remember to use reef-friendly sunscreen.

A step back in time.

You won’t be the first person enchanted by these picturesque islands. In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon stopped here during his search for the legendary Fountain of Youth. Setting foot on the soft, powdery beaches, Ponce de Leon claimed the islands in the name of Spain. But what to call them? The answer didn’t take long. So taken by the abundance of sea turtles living here, the explorer named the islands  Las Tortugas , The Turtles. (“Dry” was added later when it was discovered the islands had no fresh-water springs).

No visit to the Dry Tortugas would be complete without exploring, snorkeling or scuba diving Fort Jefferson. Built by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the 1850s, the historic fort is a massive installation sprawled over most of Garden Key. Used by the Union army during the civil war, Fort Jefferson acted as both a coastal defense fortification and a prison.

Among those imprisoned here was dr Samuel Mudd, the physician who treated Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth as he fled south from Washington D.C. Fort Jefferson was never finished and eventually abandoned as a working fort. Fortunately, it is a working museum. Reservations for private guided tours can be made in advance of your trip by Key West Charter Boat.

Private Charters To Loggerhead Key

Three miles west of Fort Jefferson you’ll find Loggerhead Key, home of the Dry Tortugas lighthouse. Also known as Loggerhead lighthouse, the 157-foot tall structure first entered service in 1858, and was only recently removed from operation in 2015. Once the most powerful lighthouse in the United States, Dry Tortugas light has been said to be “a greater distance from the mainland than any other light in the world.”

When approaching the Dry Tortugas, the lighthouse can be spotted jutting into the sky like a giant pencil, providing a clear navigation point for captains to follow. Private vessels are required to check-in and file a boat permit on Garden Key before visiting Loggerhead Key.

Dry Tortugas Fishing

Fishing charters to the Dry Tortugas frequently combine the sport of angling with the luxury of yachting. Many sportfishing boats are as well-appointed as large power yachts, with air-conditioned salons, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, and fully-stocked fridges and bars. So they’re well suited for the non-anglers in your party.

The fishermen among you will find the 70-mile trip an excellent trolling opportunity. It’s not uncommon for the fighting chair to be occupied for the lion’s share of the journey west. Once you reach the Dry Tortugas, drop anchor and everyone jumps in. There will be plenty of time for more world-class fishing on the ride back to Key West.

Ferry service from key west Florida to the Dry Tortugas on Yankee freedom iii leaves daily from the town dock and takes about 2 1/2 hours. Dry Tortugas National Park prices are available by booking online.

Dry Tortugas Catamarans & Yachts

Traveling to the Dry Tortugas by sailing catamaran is an experience in itself. With the wind as your engine, the big cats are a surprising combination of speed, space, and comfort. Holding 30 people or more, catamarans are perfect for big private groups and corporate outings.

Custom catering is available, including food, wine, beer and soft drinks. Snorkeling  gear can be provided as well. Private charter a cat and a trip to the Dry Tortugas becomes an ocean-going party.

No matter how you get to the Dry Tortugas, you’ll find these isolated islands, unlike any place you’ve ever been before. The combination of turquoise water, pure white sand, extraordinary wildlife, and no high-rise hotels is unique and special. Call Key West Charter Boat or fill out a quote form to learn more. Dry Tortugas National Park: A Delightful Day Trip from Key West

Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the least-visited, but surely one of the most unique, gems in the U.S. National Park tiara. For most, the highlight is a massive sentinel red brick redoubt, Fort Jefferson, that stands resolute and in stark contrast to the bright blue skies and crystalline Gulf of Mexico waters that surround it.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Table of Contents

Visiting the Dry Tortugas on a Day Trip

The 100-square mile Dry Tortugas National Park as a whole is 98% water so the primary ways to access the fort are either via float plane or the more accessible Yankee Freedom III ferry from Key West . Experienced sailors can pilot their own vessels there too, or you could charter a boat. The ferry crosses the 70 miles to Fort Jefferson in just over two hours. During that time, a simple but hearty breakfast is served, and a guide preps the passengers with a history of the park’s evolution, from fort constructed between 1846 to 1875 to designation as a national park in 1992.

For most of the ferry ride, you can see a 360-degree view of ocean all the way to the horizon. If you’re lucky, you might be treated to sightings of dolphins, floating turtles, or other sea life. There’s notable excitement among the passengers when the massive, six-sided, two-story fort—which is made of 16 million bricks and is noted as the largest masonry building in the western hemisphere—comes into view.

The only land in the park is comprised of seven islands, the largest of which is Garden Key, some 70% of which is now consumed by Fort Jefferson. Ponce de Leon discovered these islands in 1513 and found them to be full of turtles, which at the time were an excellent, and self-replenishing, food source. They jotted ‘Las Tortugas’ on their maps to let future Spaniards know that these islands were that period’s equivalent of a modern fast-food drive-through. Later, British sailors found the islands but noted that there was no freshwater to be had. So, they added the word ‘dry’ to give the area its unique, multi-lingual name.

Catching the Ferry from Key West

The ferry boards at 7:00 a.m. and returns to Key West at 5:15 p.m. Be sure to pack some diversions for your kids for the rides out and back. Our teens enjoyed playing a collaborative word game on a tablet, and we brought along a deck of cards as well. Note too that, assuming there are no issues with the passage out or back, you’ll only have about five hours to spend in the actual park. Be sure to make the most of your time!

Pro Travel Tip : Have one of your party arrive early at the ferry to reserve your spot in line as seating is “first come, first served,” and the best seats go quickly

Touring the Dry Tortugas on a Day Trip

My kids listening to our day trip tour guide in the Dry Tortugas

Once the Yankee Freedom III docks at Fort Jefferson, you have the option of joining a presentation by their guide. The ferry company offers an optional, short initial introduction to the island that’s a brisk 15 minutes. Our particular guide was excellent, being impassioned, very knowledgeable, and entertaining (even still our kids were bored by the presentation). You then have the option to join the guide on an extended tour of the fort itself, which lasts another 30 minutes.

The fort is clearly a marvel of early logistics, as well as engineering. It was designed to be a massive gun platform, bristling with 420 cannons. Each of the 16 million bricks had to be shipped to the island, first from Pensacola and then, during the Civil War, all the way from Maine! Granite stones for staircases, iron ‘Totten’ shutters and curved tracks that supported the cannon, mountains of mortar, and everything that the workers needed to survive, including fresh water, had to be shipped in.

While the fort never fired a shot in anger (it was actually never entirely finished—nor fully armed), its very presence may have been enough to deter both pirates and foreign governments from trying to restrict the prosperous Gulf shipping lanes that it guarded. The fort itself wasn’t the only deterrent, as it also watched over an excellent, deep-water harbor. While bandits or foreign navies might have been able to sail outside the range of the fort’s many guns, they couldn’t avoid the U.S. Naval ships that would harbor, refit, and resupply here.

Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas National Park

The fort is a delightful maze of spiral staircases, gun emplacements, and instructional interpretive signage and displays that any history buff will eat up. While care must be taken on the sometimes uneven or even crumbling infrastructure (which may be a challenge to anyone with mobility issues), a view from the grassy top of the structure is not to be missed. Care must be taken on any of the upper levels, as there are no railings to prevent falls and the compounding effects of time, the sea air, and natural erosion have made many of the bricks quite loose. Absolutely keep a close eye on small kids.

As you look out over the expansive parade ground, barracks ruins, and remaining structures, it’s easy for your mind to wander back into time and contemplate the spartan life of a soldier, laborer, or slave here. Untainted fresh water and good food was always in short supply while heat, humidity, mosquitos, and utter boredom were not. Scurvy was always a threat as was the dreaded Yellow Fever, on occasion. The fort’s population peaked at about 2,000 inhabitants, including more than 1,700 military personnel as well as officers’ families, laundresses, lighthouse keepers, a doctor, cooks, and other support staff.

During the Civil War, while the Confederacy claimed the northern, populated, parts of Florida , the Union maintained its presence at Fort Jefferson (and in Key West as well). Throughout the conflict, northern warships used the fort’s harbor as they ran missions to maintain the blockade against the South. The isolated fortress was also used as a prison. It primarily housed Union deserters but its most famous resident was Dr. Samuel Mudd, who notoriously aided John Wilkes Booth by giving him medical attention for a broken leg after he had assassinated President Lincoln.

The military eventually abandoned the brick behemoth in 1874 but it was used as a coaling station for ships of the line for some time after. Fort Jefferson was actually the last stop of the USS Maine before it sailed on to Havana, Cuba and its explosive end there.

kids snorkeling on a key west day trip to the Dry Tortugas

Snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas

Once you’ve had your fill of the island’s history, it’s a good time to head back to the ferry for another simple but hearty meal at lunchtime. Then, it’s time to get into the water. Passage on the Yankee Freedom III includes the use of their own snorkel gear—and the snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas is fabulous. Among the national park’s coral reef and sea grasses, you might spot brilliant yellow Smallmouth Grunts, gray Angelfish, a variety of Groupers, Stoplight Parrotfish, and the appropriately named Sergeant Major fish.

The fort is surrounded by a moat wall, which offers the rare opportunity for those who aren’t snorkeling to accompany those who are. While my daughters delighted in spotting fish and my wife motored along in the water, determined to circumnavigate the entire structure, I strolled along next to them, happy to stay dry while snapping photos of both my family and the fort as I moseyed along the wall.

Wildlife Spotting Opportunities

Wildlife above water includes Sooty Terns (sometimes in masses), whose only regular nesting site in the entire U.S. is on nearby Bush Key, various Noodies, and magnificent Frigatebirds. Five turtle species visit Dry Tortugas, including Loggerheads and Leatherbacks. The turtles nest on Bush Key, which is often cordoned off from visitors during the nesting season.

How do You Get to the Dry Tortugas?

Dry Tortugas National Park is located in the Florida Keys, off the coast of Key West. While the booking a day trip via the catamaran ferry is the most convenient, accessible, and the most affordable option to get to Dry Tortugas on a day trip (adult tickets are $180, children 4-16 are $125), it does limit your time there and those five hours go quickly. The return trip to Key West is a great opportunity to unwind as you might play board games, read, enjoy the ocean, or have a cocktail.

Book the Tour: Dry Tortugas National Park Day Trip by Catamaran

By contrast, the transit with Key West Seaplane Adventures lasts only 45 minutes and provides about six-and-a-half hours on the island—it also offers beautiful views when landing. Cost for a full day is $625, or $500 for children 12 and under, and while snorkeling gear is included, meals are not.

Camping is allowed on the island, but space is very limited—and is reserved well in advance. There are only eight camping spots, one group spot, and a small ‘overflow’ area. It is primitive camping (so bring everything—including your own water) and you must take the ferry as the weight of the gear is problematic for the sea planes (note too that ferry check in for campers is an hour earlier, at 6 a.m.) It is recommended that you inquire about eight to twelve months in advance to check camping availability and attempt to make a reservation. If you can snag a spot though, you’ll be one of the few people inhabiting Dry Tortugas National Park that night, as the only overnight guests are campers, boaters staying on their vessels, and a handful of park rangers.

However you get there and however long you might stay, be sure to put fascinating and truly unique Dry Tortugas National Park on your ‘must see’ list for your future travels!

Dry Tortugas National Park is a remote island park just off Key West. It’s a picturesque tropical location with coral reefs, snorkeling, wildlife, a historic fort, and more . But you can’t drive there; only permitted boats and seaplanes can access the park.

The most popular ways to get to Dry Tortugas National Park are the Yankee Freedom ferry and Key West Seaplane Adventures , but you can also get there using a permitted personal boat or a private charter.

Unfortunately, I struck out with both the seaplane and ferry when I tried to make it to Dry Tortugas on a recent Key West trip . Although I missed out, I’ll share my experience, some tips, and everything you need to know if you’re researching how to get to Dry Tortugas.

Dry Tortugas National Park is almost 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. It consists of open water and 7 small islands and is the home of the historic Fort Jefferson, coral reefs, wildlife (including sharks and sea turtles), and beautiful beaches with stunning blue water.

Dry Tortugas National Park location map 1

The park is remote and only accessible by boat or seaplane . That makes it one of the least-visited national parks in the U.S. with about 80,000 visitors annually. There are no hotels or restaurants, though there’s limited camping if you arrive by boat, including the ferry.

How To Get to Dry Tortugas National Park

You can take the Yankee Freedom ferry, Key West Seaplane Adventures, or book a private charter to get to Dry Tortugas. Permits for boats, charters, and tours are required by the National Park Service. The ferry and seaplane are the most popular options.

The Yankee Freedom ferry is how most people get to Dry Tortugas. It has a capacity of 250 passengers and makes daily trips to the park. Most people will pay $190 per ticket for the ferry , which is cheaper than a seaplane or private charter.

Dry Tortugas Ferry Yankee Freedom

Taking the ferry is an all-day affair with check-in at 7 a.m. and a return to Key West by 5:30 p.m.

Dry Tortugas campers typically take the ferry, as you can’t bring camping gear on the seaplane.

All rates include your national park entrance fee , which can be refunded if you present a park pass at check-in. There are separate rates for day trips and camping trips:

  • Adults: $190
  • Children 4 to 16: $135
  • Students 17+, Active Military, Seniors 62+ (with ID): $180

Camping Trips

  • Adults: $210
  • Children 4 to 16: $155

Travel Time

The ferry takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes each way . That gives you about 4.5 hours at the park.

Key West ferry terminal for Yankee Freedom

Ferry spots sell out months in advance . For the best availability, book your ferry reservation at least 2 months ahead of your travel dates . If you don’t get a reservation, you can stand by on the day you’d like to take the ferry. Standby spots are only available if there’s a cancellation or no-show passenger and there may not be any availability.

What’s Included

You’ll get breakfast and a snack on the ferry . Day trips come with a box lunch. Breakfast is grab-and-go bagels and cream cheese as you walk on the ferry, or you can get yogurt, fruit, coffee, and juice in the galley.

Water is available all day for free. The galley offers soft drinks and snacks for sale.

Cancellation Policy

Trips are not canceled due to rain but may be canceled if conditions are too rough for a safe trip.

If you need to cancel your booking, you will not get a refund unless the ferry can accommodate another passenger with your spot.

Standing By for the Yankee Freedom Ferry

My seaplane reservation for Dry Tortugas was canceled, so we decided to try our luck standing by for the ferry. The ferry’s website indicates that you can put your name on a standby sign-up sheet as early as 6:30 a.m. and should know by 7:50 a.m. if there are any seats available from cancellations or no-shows.

Key West Bight Ferry Terminal for Yankee Freedom

We arrived at 6:25 a.m. and added our names to the list, which was already on its second page. We were among other seaplane cancellations, so our odds of making it on weren’t great. Then, we waited on the terminal’s benches to find out if we’d make it on.

Benches at the Yankee Freedom Dry Tortugas ferry terminal

As we waited, we watched the ships in the marina go out, listened to the ferry boarding instructions, and grabbed some coffee from a nearby stand.

Boats in Key West Bight

We found out at 7:40 a.m. that there was no standby availability. But the check-in staff were kind and explained that the cancellation policy makes it so most people show up for their reservation, meaning standby isn’t a reliable option.

Bottom Line: Standing by for Yankee Freedom wasn’t a bad way to spend a morning in Key West and we’d do it again. But Plan A is to book a ferry reservation well in advance.

Key West Seaplane Adventures is another popular Dry Tortugas transportation option. The flight is far more expensive than the ferry , but you spend less time traveling to the park and get incredible views of the surrounding area from the air.

Key West Seaplane Adventures Dry Tortugas flight

The seaplane is limited to 10 passengers each on the charter’s 2 seaplanes. There are weight limits for the plane, so you’re limited in the gear you can bring . Large or styrofoam coolers, chairs or beach umbrellas, dive tanks, weights, and knives are some of the prohibited items. And you can’t take the seaplane if you’re camping .

The seaplane has rates for half-day and full-day excursions. All prices exclude the $15 per person national park entrance fee :

Half-Day Excursions

  • Adults: $361
  • Children 2 to 12: $288.80
  • Children under 2 (lap riders): Free

Full-Day Excursions

  • Adults: $634
  • Children 2 to 12: $507.2

It takes about 40 minutes to arrive by seaplane at Dry Tortugas.

If you book an 8-hour full-day excursion, you’ll have at least 6.5 hours at the park, which is 2 more hours than you’d get with the ferry with far less travel time.

Alternatively, if you book a half-day excursion, your whole trip is 4 hours with 2.5 hours of park time. You’ll have time before or after for other activities, whereas the ferry or a full-day seaplane excursion is likely to eat up most of your day.

Key West Seaplane Dry Tortugas view

Although you may find more availability on the seaplane than on the ferry, expect seats to be booked at least a month out . As with the ferry, you’ll get the best chance at a reservation if you book at least 2 months ahead of when you want to take your trip to Dry Tortugas.

There is no standby process for Key West Seaplane Adventures. However, you can email the company to join the waitlist. I did this for my booking and got a prompt response with half-day availability for 2.

Key West Seaplane Adventures supplies coolers, ice, bottled water, and soft drinks. They also offer snorkeling gear, including masks, snorkels, fins, and flotation vests, though you’re welcome to bring your own gear.

Key West snorkeling

Unlike the ferry, you’ll need to bring your own food on the seaplane . The half-day trip is short, so you may just want a snack and plan to eat before and after your tour.

If you’re doing the full-day excursion, however, you’ll need to pack a lunch, which you can store in the provided cooler. No food or drink is available for purchase at Dry Tortugas , though you could try to purchase food from the ferry’s galley when it’s docked.

Trips may be canceled due to mechanical failure, which I experienced. Also, pilots may cancel on a given day due to bad weather. If Key West Seaplane Adventures cancels your booking, you can reschedule or get a full refund .

If you need to cancel or change your booking, you must do so at least 24 hours before your flight time, or 48 hours for groups of 10 or more . After this time, you will not get a refund for your reservation, which is paid in full at the time of booking.

My Experience With Key West Seaplane Adventures

I booked my trip to Key West about 6 weeks ahead of time. The ferry was completely booked for our travel dates, but the seaplane had half-day availability on the waitlist, so I booked it. I was excited to get a quick flight to the park and enjoy the view along the way. And was also thrilled about my first seaplane experience.

The day we arrived in Key West, 2 days before our seaplane booking, Key West Seaplane Adventures called to cancel our reservation. They were apologetic and told me the plane had major mechanical issues that meant they couldn’t safely operate our flight.

I was offered a refund or rebooking for the following week. Our visit to Key West would be long over by then, so I opted for a refund, which was prompt — disappointing, but I certainly don’t want to get on a tiny plane to a remote island if the aircraft isn’t completely safe to fly.

A fellow canceled seaplane passenger I met at the ferry terminal on standby was pretty upset about the cancellation. She mentioned they offered her a discount for next time to make up for the inconvenience, which I was not offered but will mention if I decide to rebook.

I later found out that the necessary part to repair the plane had been on order for at least a month before our scheduled trip. Was the plane working when we made our booking? If I rebook in the future, I’ll be sure to ask whether the plane is currently working or not.

Bottom Line: It would have been helpful to know long before our arrival that the seaplane was not a strong possibility. With other bookings we’d made in between our seaplane booking and arrival in Key West, we only had 1 morning available to stand by for the ferry. We could have adjusted those bookings and had 2 chances to stand by for the ferry if we’d known earlier. Or we could have looked at private options if we’d had more time to figure it out.

There’s not a lot of information about private charters to Dry Tortugas, but they do exist. Just be prepared to pay a hefty fee for this exclusive experience.

Dry Tortugas private charters

If you’re looking for a private charter to Dry Tortugas, you can get quotes online, but your best bet may be to ask a local . You could also get in touch with your hotel’s concierge service.

Private Charter Options

As Dry Tortugas permits private boats, you have a variety of options for arriving by private charter, including catamaran yachts and high-speed powerboats.

Hot Tip: Some charters offer multi-day excursions with overnight accommodations on a private boat.

Private charters to Dry Tortugas aren’t cheap. You should expect to pay somewhere around $1,000 per person and may face minimum-booking requirements.

Taking a private charter to Dry Tortugas is likely to be exponentially more expensive than what you’d pay for the seaplane or ferry, but the math may work out if you have a large enough group. That’s especially true if your group is too large to book for your planned date on the seaplane or ferry.

Most private charters don’t post rates publicly or allow online booking, as rates may change depending on your needs and other variable costs including fuel and crew. You’ll generally need to ask for a quote, so be prepared to start the booking process far out enough to confirm availability and pricing.

Benefits of a Private Charter

Although the cost is likely to be much higher, you’ll get more comfort and flexibility from a private charter than the public ferry or seaplane. You have the ability to choose how you want to spend your time at Dry Tortugas. A charter is less rushed, and you’re likely to get more time at Dry Tortugas and can enjoy the park before or after the crowds arrive.

You may have more flexibility in how much gear you can bring, which is helpful if you’re planning to snorkel, scuba dive, or camp. Some charters offer equipment, including stand-up paddleboards and snorkel gear.

And if you’re planning to fish, swim, snorkel, or scuba dive, the charter can take you directly to where you want to do these activities. For example, just off Loggerhead Key is the Windjammer Shipwreck , a great spot to snorkel or scuba.

Dry Tortugas National Park Fort Jefferson

We were disappointed to miss out on Dry Tortugas, but it means we have a great reason to head back to Key West and try again! I plan to book the ferry next time, even though it means we have to make our booking much earlier.

The seaplane looks like an incredible experience. And although it’s more expensive, I found a lot of value in shorter travel time than the ferry since you get more time in the park. I also liked that the seaplane has under a dozen passengers, while the ferry has more than 200.

However, the ferry seems like a safer bet, at least in my experience. We might try the seaplane again after a successful ferry trip, but I’d be especially disappointed to try flying a second time only to be canceled again.

Either way, I’ll book an excursion to Dry Tortugas as early as possible during our next trip. That way, if our transportation option falls through, we have more time to explore other options such as a last-minute private charter.

Excellent Sightseeing En Route To The Dry Tortugas

As the only air service, we are by far the quickest and most exciting way to reach the Dry Tortugas National Park.

Everyone gets a window seat and a headset

Spot sharks, dolphin, turtles and shipwrecks

The Florida Keys do not end in Key West. The island is just the end of the highway - US1. The chain of islands that make up the Florida Keys continue for a further 70 miles. Our flight route takes you due west, over this island chain. Our destination, Dry Tortugas National Park, lies in the blue/green waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is the true end of the Keys. The next point of land would be Mexico.

In our seaplanes everyone gets a window seat and a headset. The flight is narrated throughout, and with your pilot as your personal tour guide, it is a low altitude sight-seeing flight you will never forget. In fact, we have many passengers whose sole purpose of going to the Dry Tortugas is to experience our airplane ride.

Immediately after take-off, you get a birds-eye view of Key West and the historic downtown and harbor area.

Gulf of Mexico and Clear Waters and Two Clouds

There are plenty of uninhabited mangrove islands in this area but only one island has a private house, this is Ballast Key. It is also the only privately owned land within the boundaries of the National Marine Sanctuary. Tennessee Williams often painted canvases there while visiting the owners in the late 70's and early 80's. The island also had a cameo appearance in the Bond movie License to Kill.

Key West Seaplane Taking Off in Gulf of Mexico

Beyond the Marquesas Islands lie the "Quicksands." This area is excellent for spotting huge sea turtles. The water goes down to 30 feet deep and you will be flying over an underwater desert. The sea-bed is made up of huge sand dunes that are continually moved by the strong tidal currents. It is here that the famous treasure salver Mel fisher found the treasures of the Spanish Galleons "Atocha" and "Margarita." Over half a billion dollars’ worth of gold and silver strewn across an eight-mile area. Today this is still an active treasure site with regular finds of huge Spanish Emeralds.

Sunken Ship View from Seaplane

The second is the "Arbutus." This was a 70ft work vessel used by Mel Fisher's divers and it sank without loss of life, due to hull deterioration. The Spanish galleons cannot be seen from the air but this ship marks the northern edge of the treasure site and with its mast still above water it makes for an excellent photograph.

Upon arrival at the Dry Tortugas we make a low pass over Fort Jefferson for a photo opportunity. After circling the fort, we make a smooth water landing, beach the airplane and you will be free to enjoy the delights of the Dry Tortugas. Bring along your camera, the photography is spectacular.

Dry tortugas national park campground reopens.

View of the staging area and campground from atop Fort Jefferson NPS Photo by S. Diaz

Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida has reopened the campground as scheduled after dredging the Fort Jefferson moat and redistributing sand that had built up from several hurricanes. For the safety of park visitors, the  campground was closed for 45 days  during the use of heavy construction equipment.

The next phase of the project involves dredging the finger piers to restore recreational and park access to the Garden Key waterfront. After the finger piers, the dredging will move to the moat near North Beach. During this time, the project will continue to use the area adjacent to the campground as a staging area, which may limit overflow camping.

The dredging work is part of a larger project to restore water flow in the moat and repair Fort Jefferson’s counterscarp (moat wall) damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Ian in 2022. The final phase of the project will repair breaches in the moat wall and strengthen the existing counterscarp. The entire project is scheduled for completion by fall 2024.

Construction activity may continue to cause noise and visual impacts for day trip visitors traveling by seaplane, ferry and private boat. The park is working closely with the contractor to ensure maximum safe access to Garden Key and Fort Jefferson for all visitors.

The proposed repairs and dredging are supported by construction funds allocated through Public Law 115-123 for national park units impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Dry Tortugas National Park is located about 70 miles west of Key West and encompasses seven keys, collectively known as the Dry Tortugas. Fort Jefferson, a 19th century American masonry coastal fort, was constructed in 1846 to protect shipping access to the Gulf of Mexico. Garden Key, where the fort is located, is the primary destination for people visiting the park. The 14-acre island is home to the park’s visitor center, administrative areas, docking and mooring, campground and beaches.

Your Guide to a Florida Keys Road Trip: Key Largo to Key West

Posted: March 12, 2024 | Last updated: March 13, 2024

Head to St. Augustine if you and your soul mate appreciate history. Start your visit exploring Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, where you and your significant other can drink from the mythical spring early settlers believed had anti-aging properties. Then, spend some time at the aptly named Old Jail before visiting the town's famous Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Round out your trip by signing up for one of St. Augustine's spooky ghost tours .

If you and your beau would rather explore at your own pace, plan a leisurely stroll up and down St. George Street. This downtown, pedestrian-only thoroughfare is lined with old-world structures that house boutique shops, eateries and art galleries, including local favorites like Whetstone Chocolates and the Spanish Bakery & Café. One of few all-inclusive resorts in Florida, the resort offers luxuries spanning an in-town courtesy car to complimentary valet parking, along with amenities such as free cruiser bikes and daily yoga sessions. While here, go for a dip in one of two outdoor pools, relax on 1,000 feet of private beach, or get out on the water in one of the resort's kayaks or paddleboards. For an additional cost, lovebirds can even pamper themselves with decadent treatments like a bamboo massage or mineral bath at the resort's on-site spa.

Twosomes who crave peace and quiet will love visiting Little Palm Island Resort & Spa , a Noble House property. Inside all of the British West Indies-inspired bungalow suites, visitors will discover details like vaulted ceilings, private decks and indoor-outdoor showers. Dial up the romance even further by adding on a turndown package that includes perks like a bottle of Champagne, a drawn bath for two and chocolate-covered strawberries. But while the resort is certainly laden with luxury, what makes Little Palm Island's suites ideal for couples is what they lack: Guests won't find TVs or telephones inside the accommodations, an intentional move by the resort to help travelers disconnect from everyday stress.

When you're ready to venture outside your digs, you can arrange off-site fishing excursions, scuba diving outings and more through the concierge or take advantage of the resort's countless amenities. The on-site spa offers a variety of treatments, including couples massages and an aromatherapy bath, while the beach is the place to go for activities like paddleboarding and kayaking. The Don CeSar: St. Pete Beach

Romantic getaways Florida

Courtesy of The Don CeSar

Opened in the late 1920s as a tribute to real estate scion Thomas Rowe's lost love, The Don CeSar regularly welcomes vacationing couples to St. Pete Beach, a community just west of St. Petersburg . Upon entering the "Pink Palace," you and your sweetheart will feel as if you've stepped back in time thanks to the property's old-Florida details, such as retro tile floors, wicker furnishings and palm leaf print. This Roaring '20s vibe is especially apparent in the lobby bar, which plays live jazz music and serves a selection of sophisticated cocktails and small plates. For a more romantic setting, grab a sweet treat at the ice cream parlor before enjoying a sunset, or cuddle by one of The Rowe Bar's outdoor fire pits. Maritana, the main restaurant, is the place to go if your ideal date night involves dressing up and savoring gourmet seafood.

Later, you can go for a dip in one of two heated outdoor pools, pamper yourselves at the full-service spa or borrow loaner bicycles to check out nearby attractions like Fort De Soto Park, a 1,136-acre park that sits a little more than 5 miles south of the property. When it's time to bed down, you and your partner will enjoy charming digs decorated with blush-pink tones and beds dressed in plush linens. Some previous guests said basic rooms are small, so for more elbow room, reserve one of the hotel's penthouses, whose two-story layouts come with kitchenettes and furnished balconies.
