The Knaus Boxdrive CUV Is The Camper Of Our Dreams

Camper Van makers are always looking to evolve their product, to give them catchy names and reinvent their products so that we can get the most out of our off grid experiences – some of you found this out first hand with the much loved/much loathed VW I.D Buzz in a previous article! Now Knaus are throwing down the gauntlet with their latest offering – The Boxdrive CUV.

Boxdrive CUV – Sensational Holidays Guaranteed

Once you get past the fact that the passenger is throwing odd shoes out of the window (they must have cabin fever) you start to see the similarities between the Knaus CUV and the VW California XXL.

It’s a different shape and style than you might be used to from Knauss; this one is based on the new VW Crafter, and they prefer to refer to it as a ‘Box Drive’ rather then a campervan. In fact, CUV stands for Caravanning Utility Vehicle ( How’d you like them apples!)

What’s Inside

First impressions of the interior are that it looks a little bit like an early concept for the millennium falcon that Virgin trains have turned into a reality; don’t get me wrong, that’s a good thing and everyone loves Star Wars!

The kitchen layout is almost identical to the California XXL, and the same multi position bed that can be found in the new Winnebago Revel van also features, meaning that you can adjust for extra storage if needs be.

The Boxdrive CUV also has rear double doors, the kind that you might find on a Vauxhall Movano or any other real panel van, which makes for greater accessibility if you need to grab those odd pairs of shoes to throw out of your window….

The front seats swivel round in true camper fashion, with an extendable table for those extra large Sunday dinners.

What’s even more impressive from a space saving point of view, is that the kitchen/living room floor area doubles up as the floor of the shower . See the circular track on the roof in the picture below, thats where the compartment swivels round so that you can have some modesty and shower in peace away from your fellow campers.

Final Thoughts

It’s spacious and stylish in a minimalistic kind of way. It looks well built and has everything that you would need for that adventurous getaway. It might not have all of the fancy bells and whistles that the California XXL has, but its a great camper and does exactly what it says on the tin.

Knaus Schwalbennest

Tiny House Blog readers who have perused the book “Teardrops and Tiny Trailers” by Douglas Keister may have seen the delightful little Swallow’s Nest trailer owned by Lowell and Janice Vivian. This trailer was originally built in 1961 by the German trailer company, Knaus . For its 50th anniversary, Knaus is selling the redesigned Schwalbennest in a limited edition retro design.

The diminutive trailer is just over 12 feet long and about 7 feet high. It weighs about 1,245 lbs. and has a maximum load capacity of about 400 lbs. It includes an awning , three windows and a skylight, outdoor lighting, integrated blinds, lights, a two-burner stove and sink, a fold-out work surface, a refrigerator , a four gallon water tank and a gas heater. It sleeps two people on the 4.5 ft. by 7 ft. fold-out bed. The trailer also contains a full wardrobe, storage under and behind the benches and above the dining area.

Most likely European adults. They’re metric.

I don’t think you’re supposed to stay in it while moving. So 400 lbs would not include people.

Sweet! I love it! The finishes are very classy, and the gas mileage for towing must be a big selling point. Good for a summer holiday trip or as a weekender.

Looks as if they have the new fiat 500 pulling it, so that’s a really small car, so these must be okay for compact up sized cars.

And the burners on the edge of the cabinet with the sink behind them makes me concerned for those using the sink or cooking – making coffee or tea.

But it is a cute little thing.

The researchers were supposed to live in tiny teardrop caravans in the Norwegian winter.

That is really nice for such a good price! Wish I lived in Europe.

Live in Europe…? I doubt that many non-eu people actually would like to live in Europe. We have the whole EU system to make great things expensive or not allowed. The canadian and american tourists are shocked by our pricelevel incl. foodprices. So the above concept is for few people in the EU.

On balance, most EU countries have healthcare for all, stronger consumer protections, more worker protections, etc. It’s a trade off that some non-Europeans would prefer (such as my family) and that some Europeans bristle at and would like to change. Isn’t it nice that not all places are exactly the same?

1200 plus pounds and towed by Fiat 500?? Diesel maybe? I know my HHR with a bigger engine isn’t rated to tow that much. Great looking trailer and nice to see such great finishes in a relatively affordable trailer… please bring it to Canada!!

I’ve never seen that particular combination of kitchen sink, gas burners and fridge before. You would never have access to the sink while you were cooking without reaching over hot pots and pans. If it could be reversed (burners in back, sink in front), I think that it would be much more usable.

Knaus’ New TOURER CUV Offers Benefits of Camper Van and Motorhome With Pop-Up Roof

The German RV manufacturer Knaus has introduced new models for 2023 including the TOURER CUV (caravanning utility vehicle) – a unique motorhome that combines features of an urban‐class vehicle and a fully‐fledged motorhome. Based on the Volkswagen Transporter T6.1, the CUV features a pop-up roof to increase headroom during camping.

The recreational vehicle ensures maximum driving pleasure in cities and a comfy holiday experience outdoors. Its key features include compact dimensions while driving; a comfortable seating area, a fully functional bathroom, and a 1.90-meter headroom in an extended position. At under 3,500 kg, the CUV is ideal for class B driving license holders. It has seating for four while driving, four sleeping places, and generous storage space, making it a great vehicle for a family camping tour.

In the parked state, the TOURER CUV becomes a fully‐fledged motorhome with space for up to four people – all thanks to the pop-up roof. The interior height in the compact driving mode is 150 cm, which increases to 190 cm for a sense of airiness when desired.

The CUV measures 588 cm long and sports a compact and stable body, which results in high manageability and comfortable cruising speeds with safety always at the forefront. The RV can be maneuvered like an urban‐class vehicle after folding down the roof which is great for city dwellers.

On the inside, there is a full-sized kitchen, a hidden bathroom with a toilet, and comfy four sleeping berths. The interior space is multifunctional and can be adjusted as per everyday lifestyle. There is plenty of wood and fabric accents along with built-in recessed lights that ensure a cool ambient, modern appearance.

The TOURER CUV is suitable for city use and despite its compact dimensions, it offers sufficient enough headroom inside. Knaus will also be offering an extensively equipped special model of the TOURER CUV named TOURER CUVISION.
