TRAILS & GARDENS

April 1-30, 2024.

Knoxville’s iconic Dogwood Trails date back to 1955 and today cover more than 90 miles in 13 neighborhoods throughout the city. Take a drive, a walk, or a bike ride and enjoy the scenic natural beauty of our region!   Dogwood Trails are open annually from April 1-30th , just in time to showcase the beauty of spring in East Tennessee!

As the foundation of our organization, our Trails & Gardens program celebrates the vibrancy and beauty of the Historic Dogwood Trails every year thanks to the commitment of the homeowners who live along the trails working tirelessly to prepare their neighborhoods for the spring season. But the program has also expanded to include other initiatives that celebrate the natural beauty of our area, share private gardens in other parts of our city, and ensure that the Dogwood blooms remain plentiful throughout East TN.

History:  What began as a neighborhood beautification project in 1955 has blossomed into one of the longest-running nonprofit organizations in our region. Our story began in 1947 when a journalist visited and wrote, “ Knoxville is the ugliest city I ever saw in America, with the possible exception of some mill town in New England. Its main street is called Gay Street; this seemed to me to be a misnomer. ” Upon reading his account, the Knoxville Garden Club led by Betsy Creekmore, Martha Ashe, and Betsy Goodson decided they would prove him wrong and showcase the natural beauty of the city they loved so much. Thus, the seeds of the very first Dogwood Trail were planted.

FOLLOW THE PINK LINES

Pink lines are painted along each Dogwood Trail, directing you through roughly 85 miles of blooming neighborhoods. The City of Knoxville uses roughly 100 gallon of custom-blended paint each year to make sure the Trails stay bright pink throughout the spring season.

"We'll have about three to four days with two crews doing the actual stripping, and another three or four days for the arrows and iconic dogwood bloom," signs and markings supervisor Bryan Gilbert says.

Baxter Gardens

| About Baxter Gardens

Baxter Gardens is a private residence which opens its gardens to the public during the month of April as part of the Dogwood Arts Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is comprised of fifteen gardens which can be toured during the festival with the assistance of a printed map and guide or QR code provided onsite.

The gardens were constructed, beginning in 1992, on the south facing crest of Black Oak Ridge in Fountain City, in North Knoxville.   The first garden designed and constructed was The White Garden, modeled after a similar garden at Sissinghurst Castle in England.   The English Garden influence is strong throughout the gardens.   Another major influence on the design of the gardens has been Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed and built Biltmore Gardens in Asheville, N.C., as well as Central Park in New York City and The Public Gardens in Boston.   Olmsted emphasized designing in harmony with the topography of the site, complimenting and respecting what nature has given you.

Baxter Gardens has received thousands of visitors over the years and has been recognized in several garden publications, most notably Southern Living and Garden Design.

The popularity of the gardens has brought new challenges, most notably protecting the gardens from damage from the heavy – and sometimes wayward- foot traffic. Crowds reached 25,000 in April 2021, leaving their impact.  Many of our visitors are garden lovers and come to enjoy the plants, the designs, and perhaps get ideas for their own gardens. We love this, and this was exactly why we opened our gardens for the Dogwood Festival initially. We hope you will all continue visiting and enjoying our common love.

However, in 2021, we experienced a huge increase in visitors coming for photographs in the gardens, as well as by families using the gardens for outings and recreation. While we are highly complimented that our gardens are attractive for these purposes, we are not set up to handle these “public” functions and the crowds that go with them. Therefore, we will respectfully request that beginning in April, 2022:

  • Individuals, prom couples, engaged or married couples and families will continue to be welcomed to have special occasion photos taken here. We’re honored you would do so. However, no “staged” photography will be allowed. No professional equipment such as reflectors, etc. is permitted. The use of confetti, glitter, props that create debris, etc. is strictly prohibited. No commercial photographers will be allowed to “set up shop” on our property, advertising the scheduling of appointments, etc. Our gardens are not a second, free, outdoor studio for business use. Sadly, this past April, the garden visits of many were spoiled or diminished by a small number of photographers who took inappropriate advantage of the open gardens for their own purpose.
  • We warmly welcome families to come enjoy the gardens, and we will continue to do so. Unfortunately, a major source of the physical damage to the gardens was caused by unsupervised children. We have worked hard to build pathways through the gardens to display all the plants, sculptures, etc. We need everyone to stay on the paths during their visits.  Do not climb on rocks and sculptures. Do not throw rocks into the fountains. We need parents to supervise their children . It took several months to repair and restore the gardens back to their normal condition due to the heavy foot traffic that occurred off the pathways and through vulnerable plant beds last year. Some plants had to be replaced.
  • Please respect privacy signs and do not step over chains indicating “No Access.” Keep in mind this is a private residence.

We want to emphasize that 95% of our visitors are respectful of the fact that these are private gardens, and it takes a huge effort to be prepared to share them with the public each April for the Festival. We are greatly appreciative of this. Our pleas to commercial photographers and parents are meant to preserve and ensure the garden experience for everyone .

Thank you!

Tour Information

Fountain City East

Dogwood Trails North

5.5 Miles | Trail begins at 2800 Gibbs Drive (37918)

The Garden Side of the Fountain City Trail begins on Historic Gibbs Drive, the definition of a story-book neighborhood, noted since the early 1920’s for its double row of pink dogwoods. With its linear street pattern, broad sidewalks, and spacious façade lawns, this Historic Neighborhood District reflects the characteristics of an early streetcar and automobile suburb in Knoxville. The houses are mainly Craftsman in style but all are unique featuring bungalows, Minimal Traditional, and four squares, an outstanding example of the early twentieth century tread away from elaborate Victorian-era styles to a more simplified appearance.

Stone Columns mark the entrance to another historic neighborhood, Harrill Hills, which dates back to the early 1920’s and is an interesting mix of architectural styles including everything from stone cottages to mid-century ranchers. This charming neighborhood enjoys lots of mature trees with beautiful gardens around every corner.

Colorful plantings of mature azaleas, perennials and wildflowers are abundant along Garden Drive, Dogwood, Crestwood, and Briarcliff Roads.

The Trail climbs halfway up the steep side of Black Oak Ridge to enter Beverly Acres, where handsome houses blend into their forest setting and acid-loving azaleas flourish in the rich woodland loam. You might catch a glimpse of a lovely “weeping dogwood” which is unique to the Knoxville area. Its slender, pliant branches sweep down from the top of the trunk. Wherever it chooses to grow, a weeping dogwood must be left undisturbed; it cannot be transplanted.

The route continues across Broadway at Hotel onto the Panaramic side of the trail.

Open Gardens and Camera Sites

The open gardens and camera sites listed are only open April 1-30. Please visit only when yard signs are displayed.

Camera Site: Available for photos; please do not enter the gardens.

Open Gardens: Open for a self guided tour daily form 10am-6pm.

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Aerosmith is ready to come together with fans for the rescheduled dates of their Peace Out farewell tour.
