LEONIE MEIJER RELEASES BRAND NEW MINI ALBUM ‘PERFECT SOLITUDE’

Born September 4, 1985, Dutch singer and songwriter Leonie Meijer performed as a singer in several bands, but her big break came when she performed as part of the 2010-2011 season of The Voice of Holland, eventually coming in fourth, but it allowed her to begin a recording career. The first two records ‘Los’ (2011) and ‘Luister Maar’ (2013) were produced by Daniel Gibson, her longtime writing partner. The third album “The Naked Sessions” was released in October 2015. This album was recorded live WAS and produced by Jack Pisters and herself.

In 2017 the album ‘NJ 123’ was released: Produced by Ton Snijders, Daniel Gibson and herself. For this album Leonie traveled around the world. She followed the blues trail in the Deep South of the United States on her own, to understand more of the depth there is to blues and country music. Two of the new tracks on this record were written in Nashville, together with songwriter Sam Ashworth. But also trips to Ireland and a recording session with The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic, contributed to this special album. The title ‘NJ 123’ refers to the bus she took every morning from New Jersey to New York, where the artwork for the new album was created.

Continuing her own path, in the summer of 2018 Leonie decided to write in solitude. This resulted in 6 brand new songs behind the piano. The mini album, called Perfect Solitude, is out now! Produces by the amazing Reyn Ouwehand. The story of Perfect Solitude continues in theatres from September 2019 till March 2020.

Live reviews

Leonid & Friends

Passion. Persistence. Perfection. By Scott Schwebke

With multiple sold-out U.S. tours under its belt and hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, Leonid & Friends continues to astound its global audience with its unique ability in capturing the spirit, musicality, and fire of American supergroup Chicago. And what is even more stunning is that Leonid & Friends, comprised of 11 of the finest musicians in Russia, haven't seen Chicago perform live until recently, yet replicates the band’s complex arrangements amazingly note for note. Chicago has never been in Russia, and none of us have attended their concerts until just recently in the United States," said Leonid Vorobyev, a multi-instrumentalist who is the band’s leader. "We have only recordings and videos (to help us learn Chicago songs)."

Ironically, Vorobyev wasn’t always a fan of horn bands, and as a teenager gravitated to the hard-driving guitar-based sounds of the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Deep Purple, and Grand Funk Railroad. "In the early 1970s in the USSR, electric guitars, amplifiers, and drums were rare to find so at school we were playing self-made instruments," Vorobyev explained. "We were allowed to rehearse in the same room with a horns band. Those musicians almost always were drunk and quite often tried to play with us our rock songs. It was a nightmare, and I hated them all!" But that all changed when Vorobyev heard Chicago. He became an instant fan. "I loved so much the brilliant mixture of rock guitars, drums, and jazz horns with bright vocal harmonies," he said. In 2014, Vorobyev decided to indulge his love for the band by gathering a few fellow musicians in a studio to record a video of them playing his favorite Chicago tune, Brand New Love Affair. No charts or scores of the song existed so Vorobyev transcribed the tune by ear. The result was a YouTube video that quickly went viral. Since then Leonid & Friends has recorded videos of other Chicago hits including Make Me Smile , 25 or 6 to 4 , and Saturday In The Park . All total the videos have received more than 50 million views. Also, Leonid & Friends has recorded two albums showcasing its tribute to Chicago. The process of getting each tune just right is a painstaking labor of love. In addition to scoring and arranging, Vorobyev oversees mixing and mastering of each song. However, he credits his highly skilled bandmates for making each tune sing. "All of my musician friends are highly professional," he said. However, Leonid & Friends hasn’t been satisfied with merely connecting with fans through videos and recordings. In early 2019, the band embarked on its first tour outside of Russia that had fans dancing in the aisles at sold-out shows in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Florida. Two other scorching coast-to-coast U.S. tours followed that same year. “The fans were so eager to see us that some traveled from as far as Hawaii and the Philippines not mentioning flying across the U.S .and driving for hours to attend our shows,” Vorobyev said. “I was expecting a warm greeting but I didn't expect such a warm reception and with so much love and gratitude for us.” In Los Angeles, the band met its musical heroes, founding members of Chicago, keyboardist Robert Lamm, and drummer Danny Seraphine as well as Michelle Kath Sinclair, daughter of late, great Chicago guitarist Terry Kath. “We were so thrilled that Robert, Danny, and Michelle took the time to visit with us,” Vorobyev said. “It was an experience that we will cherish and remember forever.” When Leonid & Friends isn’t touring, band members are in the studio in Moscow immersing themselves in Chicago’s storied catalog of hits and deep tracks while preparing for the next tour. In September of 2018, the band recorded its first song from legendary supergroup Earth, Wind, & Fire and also paid tribute to the band Blood, Sweat & Tears as well. Borrowing a line from one of Chicago's biggest hits, "it's only the beginning" of great things from Leonid & Friends.

Scott Schwebke has been a journalist for more than 30 years and a longtime fan of Chicago dating back to its incarnation as CTA. His work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post, Orange County Register and various publications across the U.S.

He has been working as a music producer, sound engineer, composer, and musician for about 30 years. Many Russian bands and singers have passed through his hands and ears. At the end of 2014, Leonid decided to give himself a gift to celebrate his retirement by recording a cover version of Chicago’s song Brand New Love Affair. No charts or scores of the song existed so he transcribed the musical source by ear, called upon his friends and recorded the song. Many people took notice of his talents and in 2012, he began composing music for the film and television industries. Along the way, Sergey made many friends in the music industry and considered a number of them very close. In 2014, he was approached by one of those friends and asked to participate in recording a cover of a song from the American band Chicago for Leonid Vorobyev. The audio recording and subsequent video of the song Brand New Love Affair were not supposed to be anything more than a birthday gift to his friend but the rest of the world didn’t see it that way. After posting it on YouTube for their friends to view the word began to spread, and what was supposed to be a simple act of kindness for his friend, turned into the band Leonid & Friends recording many more songs which have been viewed in over 150 countries at last count. He later went on to study as a television and film director at the Karpenko-Kariy Kiev National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television and he also attended the Kiev Institute of Theatrical Arts. He conducted an online contest for Leonid to find a vocal talent comparable to that of Chicago’s Peter Cetera. Serge recorded his first song with Leonid & Friends in the summer of 2015 from his own studio in Kiev but didn’t personally meet the band members until the spring of 2016. Sergey did so well that at 18, he was awarded admission to the Kyrgyzstan National Conservatory of Music in Bishkek to continue studying the piano, his long time dream. Since then, Sergey has worked and performed with many top musical acts and together with his wife, an excellent singer in her own right, have organized concerts. During his first live streaming concert with the band, Roman Vorobyev introduced him to the fans. Sergey said, “When I saw Leonid & Friends on YouTube, I thought myself maybe one day I would play in a band like this. But now I’m here, it’s a magic, thank you my God, and I very glad to be part of Leonid & Friends. Thank you very much, thank you for trust and I want to see our friends in the future.”

Oleg transferred to the college of music in Arkhangelsk and then on to the Academy of music in Moscow. He remained in Moscow and began playing in various groups performing in a variety of musical styles. He never gravitated toward a single genre saying, “I have no preference in music styles. In 2017 he was excited to audition for Leonid & Friends because he’s loved the music of Chicago since childhood. He said, “My father introduced me to their creativity.” Looking back on his first USA tour with Leonid & Friends, Oleg said, “I am very grateful to my parents and teachers for helping me to become a professional musician. I love my profession and the smiles of the audiences at the concerts. It is very important for me in life.”

Leonie Fiebich is carving out a Liberty role: ‘Getting better and better’

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The challenge for Leonie Fiebich doubled as an advantage.

Besides hearing about the tempo and physicality, Fiebich didn’t know much about what her WNBA transition from Spanish club Casademont Zaragoza would entail.

The league didn’t know much about the 6-foot-4 wing, either.

Fiebich could be “a little bit sneaky,” she said earlier this season.

That might help create more shots.

It also bought time for development.

There weren’t expectations — or even tangible roles, as her 8.4 minutes average from the first games suggested at first.

Fiebich made her first start for Liberty on Thursday.

Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello envisioned Fiebich’s potential stretching beyond just 3-pointers and defense, but that wouldn’t happen instantly.

Fiebich felt she had more games than practices the first month.

Development on the protected laboratory of a practice court would need to happen in limited doses before an expanded role — when Courtney Vandersloot was away from the Liberty due to personal reasons — allowed her numbers to rise toward the 4.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game she carries into Saturday’s contest against the Sparks at Barclays Center.

When the Liberty defeated LA on Thursday, Fiebich made her first start and finished with three points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals.

She became the third rookie in 2024 to collect at least five rebounds and five assists in a game, joining Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.

She has earned regular minutes in the fourth quarter recently as part of the Liberty’s closing unit, and with Vandersloot (return to play conditioning) and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton (right knee) questionable for Saturday, Fiebich could remain critical.

“I think you can see that I’m feeling more and more comfortable out there on the court, just knowing my teammates and knowing their tendencies — where they want the ball on offense, on defense just kinda defending on a string,” Fiebich said Thursday. “I think you can really see that it’s getting better and better.”

Last season, the Liberty acquired Fiebich’s rights from the Sky in a four-team trade.

She was originally drafted in 2020, traded to Chicago the following year and kept playing in Europe — starring with Zaragoza — until inking a WNBA training-camp deal for the first time in February.

New York Liberty forward Leonie Fiebich (13) shoots a three point sh

The Liberty possessed plenty of wings, though, and that meant Fiebich’s playing time would be limited.

So she adjusted on the fly.

Fiebich learned to prepare on defense as if anyone could score, as opposed to structured sets that only ended with the best shot.

There were different rules.

There were the Liberty’s tendencies that needed to mesh with her instincts.

Fiebich even determined that it’s “a little bit less physical” than in Europe because referees don’t allow the same contact, she said.

“I’ve learned that in my first games with a lot of fouls,” Fiebich said, “so now I adjusted.”

The construction of Fiebich’s skillset, with 3-pointers and defense at its core, reminded Brondello of Mercury wing Rebecca Allen, and Thursday, Fiebich ignited a third-quarter run by poking the ball from the Sparks’ Kia Nurse.

She grabbed possession, pushed it up the court, pump-faked and glanced over her shoulder.

Sabrina Ionescu trailed the fast-break sequence.

As shooters, they both think alike, Fiebich said.

That’s why she figured Ionescu would be there — somewhere.

So once she located the Liberty guard, Fiebich flipped a behind-the-back pass to Ionescu for a 3 in what became a 9-0 run.

When the Sparks trimmed a 17-point deficit to five in the fourth, Fiebich checked back in and closed alongside Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, reserve Ivana Dojkic and Ionescu until Jones fouled out.

She hit a 3 from the corner to stretch the Liberty lead to nine with 2:05 left. She assisted on Ionescu’s 3-pointer 30 seconds later, too, while also collecting a pair of rebounds.

Sabrina Ionescu #20, Jonquel Jones #35, Breanna Stewart #30, Leonie Fiebich #13 and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton #44 of the New York Liberty huddle on the court

Fiebich played the entire fourth quarter against the Mystics on June 9 — a game in which she went 4 of 8 on 3s for a career-best 12 points — and the Aces later that week.

She logged another 7:19 in the final frame against the Mercury, too.

“We rave about her all the time,” Brondello said, “and it doesn’t always show on the stat sheet. … Does all the little things well.”

Those minutes might disappear after Vandersloot and Laney-Hamilton return.

But at this point, and especially after the past two weeks, Fiebich’s contributions won’t fly under the radar anymore.

She has a tangible WNBA role.

Quick specs:

Leonie Meijer singer | composer | artist Born: September 4th 1985, Rotterdam, The Netherlands signed to BMG Talpa Music (publishing) owner of Frederick Records for a press kit, please e-mail

Working on a brand new album! YES it is happening. I am currently working with Ward Reijmerink to make this happen. It has been quite a journey so far.

Still have to write about this crazy rollercoaster of a year...I'll get back to it very soon, promise.

Well, what can we say about this year, guys. It's slightly a different journey but a few new special songs have been released separately: Phone Call Fighters, a home isolation song. The second one, a Dutch track called 'Hoe Kan Je Zonder Mij' was written by Leonie and Jan Tekstra. A very special song about a broken heart, produced by Reyn Ouwehand.

Continuing on her own musical path, the desire for writing in solitude begins to further progress. A new mini album is born in September 2019: Perfect Solitude. Six new songs from the heart written on the piano at home. Alone. Produced by the talented and unique Reyn Ouwehand.

In 2017, her album 'NJ 123' is released: her first album on her own record label Frederick Records. Produced by Ton Snijders, Daniel Gibson and herself. Two of the new tracks on this record were written in Nashville, together with songwriter Sam Ashworth. But also solo trips to Ireland, the US, and a recording session with The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic, contributed to this special and personal album. The title 'NJ 123' refers to the bus she took every morning from New Jersey to New York, where the artwork for the album was created together with artist and designer Guy Vording.

The third album "The Naked Sessions" was released in October 2015. This album was recorded live in Fendal Sound Studio's in The Netherlands, with a few of her closest musicians, with recording engineer Hans van Vondelen and produced by Jack Pisters and herself. Two brand new tracks 'White Ribbons' and 'Same River Twice' were written by Leonie and 6-time Oscar nominated, Grammy and Golden Globe nominated hit songwriter Jud Friedman. She created one track, Ik kom naar je toe, together with multi talented guitarist and producer Arie Storm. The album also contains acoustic driven versions of older tracks.

For the second record, also produced by Daniel Gibson, Leonie goes to Sweden to write with Daniel Gibson and among others, Jörgen Ringqvist, who was also there for the mixing process and recorded all of the drums on both first and second record.

The first record 'Los' (2011) is released. Produced by Daniel Gibson, her long time writing partner. It contains collaborations with Martin Buitenhuis, Han Kooreneef and Katie Louise Smith. But before that, it all started with the duet 'Los van de Grond' with her former The Voice coach Jeroen van der Boom.

Born September 4, 1985, Dutch singer and songwriter Leonie Meijer always performed as a singer in several bands, but her big break came when she performed as part of the 2010-2011 season of The Voice of Holland, eventually coming in 4th, but it allowed her to begin a recording career.

Lilia Vu wins 2024 Meijer LPGA Classic in playoff, spoiling Lexi Thompson's chase for first victory since 2019

Vu overcame a back injury to pick up a clutch victory sunday in extra holes.

lilia-vu-lpga-meijer-g.png

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Lilia Vu won the Meijer LPGA Classic in a playoff Sunday in her return from a back injury, spoiling Lexi Thompson's bid for her first victory in five years.

Playing for the first time since the Ford Championship in late March in Arizona, Vu beat Thompson and third-round leader Grace Kim with a 5-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole -- the par-5 fourth at tree-lined Blythefield Country Club.

Thompson, the 2015 winner, has said this will be her last year playing a full schedule. She won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in June 2019.

Vu birdied the par-5 18th in regulation for a 7-under 65, then twice more to match Thompson and Kim -- who entered the day five strokes ahead of Thompson and eight clear of Vu -- on the first two playoff holes.

On the deciding hole, Vu hit her second shot into the bunker to the right of the green and blasted out to set up the birdie. Thompson and Kim missed long birdie tries after laying up following errant drives.

Vu birdied four of the last six holes in regulation to match Thomson and Kim at 16-under 272.

A former No. 1 player and double major winner last year, the 27-year-old American won for the fifth time on the LPGA Tour. The eight-stroke comeback is the largest of the season, one more than Linnea Strom overcame last week in the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Thompson closed with a birdie for a 68.

Kim shot 73. The 23-year-old Australian won in a playoff last year in Hawaii for her lone LPGA Tour title.

Ally Ewing was fourth at 15 under after a 69. Allisen Corpuz and Narin An were 14 under, each shooting 70s.

Top-ranked Nelly Korda left Friday after missing her second straight cut following a stretch of six victories in seven events. She won at Blythefield in 2021 at a tournament-record 25 under.

The major KPMG Women's PGA Championship begins Thursday at Sahalee outside Seattle.

Thompson Tied for Second After 65

leonie meijer tour

Eleven-time LPGA Tour winner Lexi Thompson is now contending for her first LPGA Tour title since 2019 after firing a brilliant 7-under 65 in the third round of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give at Blythefield Country Club.

The 29-year-old caught fire on Moving Day in Belmont, Mich., carding a 7-under 29 on her first nine holes on Saturday, an excellent tear of golf that saw her make five birdies and an eagle in a six-hole stretch from No. 4 to No. 9.

That performance moved her to 12-under for the tournament, and even though she cooled off on the back nine, making one bogey on 14 and one birdie on 17 to ultimately post a 65, it was an impressive effort that took Thompson from T25 to T2 on the leaderboard with 18 holes to play.

Firing a 29 on nine holes isn’t something that happens super often in a professional golfer’s career, and for Thompson, today’s front nine will definitely be going down in her personal record book, a six-hole run that she isn’t likely to forget about any time soon.

“(That was) one of my best stretches I think I've had on the golf course,” said Thompson. “The golf is one thing, but just how I felt out there, very comfortable and relaxed, just enjoyed being out there. I think that's what this week really brings, just the atmosphere, and I think we all do enjoy coming back and playing here in Grand Rapids.

“This is a golf course you know you have to come out and play aggressive and make lots of birdies. I came out feeling very comfortable, made a few good swings, and rolled in some putts. I got in a groove and tried to keep the pedal down as much as I could out there.”

Thompson announced at the U.S. Women’s Open a couple of weeks ago that she will retire from full-time professional golf at the conclusion of the 2024 season, making this week’s Meijer LPGA Classic her last time playing in the longstanding Michigan event. She has played in every edition of this tournament since its inception in 2014, winning the Meijer LPGA Classic in 2015 earning five additional top-10 results along with that victory.

While she’s currently five shots back of 54-hole leader Grace Kim and a monumental Sunday effort will be needed if she wants a shot at a 12th Tour title, Thompson is working hard to not get too far ahead of herself and is hoping to enjoy her final ride at an event that’s meant so much to her career throughout the years.

“It's a tournament that I've absolutely loved throughout my career,” Thompson said. “I think it's one of the spots that all of us players really enjoy coming back to. I don't know what position I'm at today, how many I'm behind for that matter. I'm just going to come out tomorrow and do my best, focus on my game and my mental approach for each and every shot. That's all I can do. Of course, I want to win, but there is a lot of golf, so I can just go out there, give it my all, and see where that takes me.”

And even if things don’t ultimately shake out in her favor, Thompson will have plenty of positive memories to take away from this week’s experience as she once again leans on the support of her fans to carry her through, no matter if she ends up hoisting the Meijer LPGA Classic trophy come Sunday afternoon or not.

“I've been trying to just be easier on myself, give myself grace,” said Thompson. “It's a new week with a new caddie with Mark (Wallington) on my bag. He's super positive, and I think that's what I need by my side. Even through the hard times. But I just enjoy coming back to this tournament and embracing the fans. They're amazing.

“Even if I haven't played well here some of the years, the fans are always the same. Always so supportive and loving.”

Lexi thompson, nelly korda headline dream leaderboard at 2024 kpmg women's pga championship, share this article.

leonie meijer tour

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Lexi Thompson isn’t done yet. Not yet a month removed from announcing her plans to step away from a full-time schedule after this season, Thompson finds herself holding the solo first-round lead at a major championship for the first time in her career. Twice she has held a share of the lead to open a major championship.

Thompson birdied the first three holes in Thursday’s opening round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship en route to a 4-under 68 at the stunning and shockingly narrow Sahalee Country Club. She’s one shot ahead of World No. 1 Nelly Korda and Patty Tavatanakit on a star-studded leaderboard. Ten players are two shots back.

“Just tried to stay in the moment out there and really visualize my shots and pick small targets and just commit to it,” said Thompson, who hasn’t won on tour since 2019 but came up just short in a playoff last week at the Meijer LPGA Classic.

It was the first week Thompson had veteran caddie Mark Wallington on the bag and she was noticeably upbeat. Thompson said the pair have had a great friendship on tour for years but had never worked together.

“We always have a good laugh with each other and really look for each other in a friendship when needed,” she said.

“So I was like, you know what? This sounds great. Let’s just work together and see how it does. No matter what, we’ll always have that friendship and bond. That will never leave us.”

Wallington’s positive vibe, she continued, is exactly what she’s needed.

It also helps that something clicked with her swing early last week at the Meijer that has enabled her to be “free-swinging Lexi.” She leads the field in strokes-gained approach.

“My swing has always been a bit fast,” she said. “A good solid tempo throughout the whole swing. Just seeing that draw out there, especially off the tee boxes. That’s always what I’ve done ever since I was little.”

For Korda, the pressures of a major championship melted away on the first tee when she looked over and saw her nephew, Greyson DelPrete, outside the ropes. Korda’s big sister Jessica arrived on Wednesday with her four-month-old son, but Nelly wasn’t sure exactly when they’d join her on the course at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

“His giggles just give me so much happiness,” said Korda, who opened with a 3-under 69 at Sahalee Country Club to hold the clubhouse lead.

Though she’s coming into the third major of the year off two consecutive missed cuts, Korda’s 2024 has been historically brilliant. With five consecutive victories and six overall , including her second career major, a victory this week would put her in rarified air.

Since 1970, only three Americans have won seven or more times on the LPGA in a single season. Beth Daniel was the most recent in 1990 with seven, while Nancy Lopez won nine (1978) and eight times (1979) in her first two seasons on the LPGA. Kathy Whitworth won seven times in 1973.

Korda’s opening 69 included three consecutive birdies on Nos. 13-15 and a double-bogey on the fourth after she made the turn. She closed with a birdie on the par-3 ninth to end on a high note.

“I took my chances where I could and I played safe for the majority of the round,” she said.

When it comes to strategy, Korda is often reliant on long-time caddie Jason McDede — sometimes a little too reliant.

This week, she said, they decided that McDede would give her the number, how far she should land it, and then she would take it from there to feel more confident about each decision. Last week at a windy Meijer LPGA Classic, Korda struggled with going long on several approach shots in an opening 76.

“He’s going to disagree or agree,” said Korda of her chats with McDede, “but for the majority, it was a lot of agreeing today, so it was good.

While she missed the cut last week, Korda found something with the driver on Friday at the Meijer, which could prove massive this week.

“That’s the tough part about the golf course here,” she said. “If you don’t hit the fairway you don’t get to be aggressive. You can’t take your opportunities.”

Sahalee is undoubtedly a mental grind, and for some, like Allisen Corpuz, that’s a good thing. Corpuz opened with a 70, joining a host of players at 2 under including, Leona Maguire, Charley Hull and Amy Yang.

“I feel like weeks like this where par is always going to be a good score, I’m just pretty good at staying calm,” said the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open champion, “just playing it a little safer.”

Tavatanakit, who won earlier this season on home soil in Thailand, enjoyed a rare bogey-free day at Sahalee. Seattle happens to be one of her favorite cities, noting that she’d live here if the weather was better for golf.

“I feel homey,” she said. “I feel like – I don’t know, cuddly with the weather, too.”

It’s been three years since Tavatanakit won the ANA Inspiration and Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year honors. She spent time in the valley after that win and came out wiser for it.

“Feel like I’ve gotten more acceptant,” she said. “I feel more acceptance towards anything that life would throw at me on and off the course.
