Leonie Meijer: A new beginning

article-jpg

It is hard to believe that it has been almost ten years since Leonie Meijer shot to fame as a finalist on the first ever season of The Voice of Holland . Since then, The Voice format has been exported all over the world, while Meijer, now 34, has proven herself to be one of the Netherlands’ most talented recording artists. The Rotterdam native has collaborated with musicians and composers from a variety of musical genres over the years, but decided that for her latest album, Perfect Solitude , she wanted to do things a bit differently. An immensely personal record, it examines the power and beauty of being alone, and was written exclusively by Meijer – marking a change in direction and proving the artist has what it takes for a long-lasting musical career.

“It’s been quite a ride since then!” laughs Meijer, remembering her debut on The Voice of Holland back in 2010. “It feels like so much longer ago. It was such a different time. I was only 25. It’s been a rollercoaster ever since and I feel like I’ve changed a lot since then.” Meijer was mentored by Dutch singer Jeroen van der Boom on the series, which she describes as a “very meaningful experience”.

“It was such a learning curve. It was the first time I was really in the business,” she recalls. “It was so different to what you dream about when you’re eight years old and singing into your hairbrush.”

Musical identity

Meijer studied at the Music Academy in Lelystad from the age of 18, going on to attend the Amsterdam Conservatory while performing as a singer with the band Material Spirits during her free time. The Voice of Holland launched her career as a recording artist and a string of hit records, although over the years an urge to explore her true musical identity grew stronger.

“It’s great to collaborate with others, but I had been in the industry for almost ten years and felt it was time to pull back,” she reveals. “You can get influenced by the media and record labels, but I don’t make music for money. I’m not interested if I make a hit.”

Perfect Solitude

Convinced that the real motives for singing and composing are rooted deep inside, Meijer decided to withdraw herself from the industry and reflect for a while. At home with just her guitar, piano and recording equipment, she composed her beautiful new album, Perfect Solitude . “I wasn’t in a good place at the time, but writing the album brought me to a happier place,” she admits. “Writing alone was a nice experience. I always thought ‘at some point I’ll do this on my own, just to see what happens’. It’s my most personal work so far and very introspective.”

leonie meijer tour

An album of two parts, Part One of Perfect Solitude was released at the end of September to rave reviews. “The first time I played it live was so emotional,” confesses Meijer, who is currently on tour with the new record. “I hadn’t talked to my friends about what I was up to, so I was happy to finally be able to share it. I somehow felt that I had nothing to hide. And if some people don’t like it, then that’s okay. You can’t please the whole world. You just have to be happy and stand by the choices you make, because it’s your name on the record.”

Often, artists talk about a sense of catharsis that comes with the completion of an album, and this seems to be the case with Meijer. “Writing songs isn’t always a very happy experience, but when the songwriting is difficult it’s an experience in itself. When you perform you feel free, like ‘it’s done’,” she reveals.

While the performing is a freeing experience for Meijer, she admits that the moments before a show can be intense. “My sense of humour kind of disappears,” she grins. “I prefer being on my own in silence, I can’t handle a lot of people around me. I just like to concentrate one hour before a show. I’m very focused and just stay in my dressing room in peace and quiet.”

leonie meijer tour

Diving into your soul

Sharing this deeply personal record is a special experience for Meijer, although she points out that gigs can be equally intimate when performing covers. “Some songs are so meaningful and just touch you. When you sing them they dive into your soul,” she explains. “I don’t care if it’s from another songwriter, as long as you make the song your own. Like when Adele recorded Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan. Everyone interprets songs in their own way and that’s what makes music so special.”

So are there any songs Meijer wishes she had written herself? “Oh well there’s quite a few actually,” she laughs. “I recorded Vincent by Don McLean. That song touches me so deeply. It’s beautiful. Every time I sing it it strikes a nerve, in a good way.”

Finding her true path

She may have experienced pain in the making of Perfect Solitude , but it is clear Meijer has never felt stronger. “The music I’m making feels like a new beginning. I just want to go on and explore writing more in this mode. There’s nothing greater than playing to an audience of people who love my music,” she concludes. “With this new experience I feel like I’m finding my true path.”

Leonie Meijer is on tour with her album Perfect Solitude until April 2020. Check out where you can see her perform next at leoniemeijer.com

LEONIE MEIJER RELEASES BRAND NEW MINI ALBUM ‘PERFECT SOLITUDE’

Born September 4, 1985, Dutch singer and songwriter Leonie Meijer performed as a singer in several bands, but her big break came when she performed as part of the 2010-2011 season of The Voice of Holland, eventually coming in fourth, but it allowed her to begin a recording career. The first two records ‘Los’ (2011) and ‘Luister Maar’ (2013) were produced by Daniel Gibson, her longtime writing partner. The third album “The Naked Sessions” was released in October 2015. This album was recorded live WAS and produced by Jack Pisters and herself.

In 2017 the album ‘NJ 123’ was released: Produced by Ton Snijders, Daniel Gibson and herself. For this album Leonie traveled around the world. She followed the blues trail in the Deep South of the United States on her own, to understand more of the depth there is to blues and country music. Two of the new tracks on this record were written in Nashville, together with songwriter Sam Ashworth. But also trips to Ireland and a recording session with The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic, contributed to this special album. The title ‘NJ 123’ refers to the bus she took every morning from New Jersey to New York, where the artwork for the new album was created.

Continuing her own path, in the summer of 2018 Leonie decided to write in solitude. This resulted in 6 brand new songs behind the piano. The mini album, called Perfect Solitude, is out now! Produces by the amazing Reyn Ouwehand. The story of Perfect Solitude continues in theatres from September 2019 till March 2020.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Meijer Gardens announces lineup for 2024 Summer Concert Series

GRAND RAPIDS — When Art Garfunkel played the first official concert at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in June 2003, the fledgling Grand Rapids-area amphitheater attracted a little more than 1,000 concertgoers as it braced for an inaugural 10-concert season.

This season, Meijer Gardens has announced a 33-concert lineup for the 1,900-capacity outdoor venue, with My Morning Jacket, Black Pumas, Blues Traveler, Leslie Odom Jr., Boyz II Men and Charley Crockett joining returning favorites like O.A.R., Trombone Shorty, Bonnie Raitt, Michael Franti and Amos Lee.

The Fifth Third Bank Summer Concert Series will kick off June 5 with “outlaw cowboy” Orville Peck, who was forced to cancel his 2023 tour with a stop at Meijer Gardens.

Tower of Power, Jason Mraz, The Wallflowers, Il Divo, Gin Blossoms, Kansas, Grace Potter and Fitz and The Tantrums also will likely garner enthusiastic attention from concertgoers when discounted tickets go on sale to Meijer Gardens members at 9 a.m. April 20.

After the member pre-sale, tickets will go on sale to the general public April 27 through AXS.com , this year’s new ticket provider.

“I might be biased, but welcoming Bonnie Raitt back after a seven-year break is certainly hard to beat. She is just the best,” said Chris Mautz, who books the annual concert series. “The mix of the first-time acts hitting the gardens is (also) sweet."

Meijer Gardens had previously announced three shows — Los Lobos and Little Feat on June 21, The Temptations and The Four Tops on July 12, and Andrew Bird and Amadou and Mariam on Aug. 9.

As usual, the series will feature several high-profile double bills, including Raitt and James Hunter on June 26; Old Crow Medicine Show and Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway on July 10; Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket with Vertical Horizon on Aug. 5; Blues Traveler and Big Head Todd and The Monsters on Aug. 14; and the series-closing Keb’ Mo’ and Shawn Colvin on Sept. 16.

“Curating the (series) is such a blast for our entire team. (It's) a bit like going for a long walk in the gardens. You begin with a bit of a plan and then you see where it takes you,” Mautz said.

The average public ticket price has dropped slightly the past two years. This year’s average price comes in at $72.60, 30 cents less than the 2023 average of $72.90.

The most expensive concert will be Boyz II Men on July 28, with tickets priced at $130 for members during the pre-sale and $135 for non-members.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

Before She Became Music’s Greatest Teacher, She Wrote an Opera

Nadia Boulanger’s “La Ville Morte” was repeatedly thwarted by death and World War I, then nearly lost. Finally, it is having its American premiere.

  • Share full article

A black and white photograph from the 1930s of a woman with gray hair and spectacles conducting at a podium, with both of her hands raised.

By Joshua Barone

In March 1912, the famous violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe visited the home of his fellow musician Raoul Pugno in Paris. At the piano, Pugno played and sang through “La Ville Morte,” an opera he was writing with Nadia Boulanger , a mentee-turned-collaborator 35 years his junior.

“Of this very private performance,” Ysaÿe wrote to Boulanger later that month, “I keep the most profound and happiest impression.” The opera, he told her, was “so beautiful, so sound, so poignant.”

“La Ville Morte” was the most ambitious project of Boulanger’s young composing career. And once it took shape, with a piano-vocal score completed that summer, she wrote under the final measures, “Alleluia!!!!”

But one thing after another kept “La Ville Morte” from reaching the stage. In 1914, Pugno, an essential partner in selling it to the public, died. World War I broke out, delaying the planned premiere, not for the last time. Several years later, Boulanger’s dear sister, the composer Lili Boulanger, died, too, and Nadia virtually stopped writing or promoting her own music.

Boulanger would instead go on to become one of the greatest music teachers in history — a formative figure for titans of the 20th century, like Aaron Copland and Elliott Carter, and other legends, including Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach and Philip Glass.

Hardly discussed as a composer, Boulanger died, in 1979, with “La Ville Morte” as more of a footnote than the true feat it was. Its full score was lost, and it has never been performed in the United States; it wasn’t even staged until this century. On Friday, though, it is having its American premiere at NYU Skirball in a production by Catapult Opera , featuring a new orchestration that reveals it, the conductor Neal Goren said, as “wildly rich and gorgeous.”

“I had no idea that Boulanger had composed an opera before this,” said Goren, Catapult’s founder and artistic director, who was presented with “La Ville Morte” while searching for an opera by a woman for the company. “I was totally taken with it. It’s like a cross between ‘Parsifal’ and ‘Pelléas.’”

Boulanger and Pugno composed to a libretto by the celebrated Italian writer Gabriele d’Annunzio, based on his play “La Città Morta,” which had arrived in Paris under a French translation, “La Ville Morte,” starring Sarah Bernhardt, in 1898.

Pugno had been a major supporter of Boulanger’s career after she finished studying at the Paris Conservatory in 1904, not yet 18 years old. They had met while she was a student, and their relationship was one of both friendship and romance.

It’s not known when they started thinking about “La Ville Morte,” but scholars writing in the 2020 collection “ Nadia Boulanger and Her World ” — including Alexandra Laederach and the co-authors Jeanice Brooks and Kimberly Francis — have found mentions of the composition in Boulanger’s long-unavailable correspondence and daybooks. One entry, on May 22, 1910, says, “We wrote the first notes of ‘La Ville Morte.’”

Details about the opera’s genesis are hazy, particularly when it comes to the division of labor. That speaks to how truly collaborative it was — but also to how less seriously the music world took Boulanger than Pugno at this early stage of her career. She was building a respectable catalog, of both chamber and orchestral works, yet relied on Pugno’s reputation to generate interest in “La Ville Morte.”

Laederach describes the first manuscript of the piano-vocal score as “a precious source in which one can clearly distinguish two types of handwriting, always overlapping and complementary.” But Pugno didn’t give the public that impression. In her biography “ Nadia Boulanger: A Life in Music ,” Léonie Rosenstiel recounts a 1912 interview that he gave to Ward Stephens in The Musician, in which, when asked what he was up to, he replied, “This summer I am unusually busy writing an opera.” Nowhere does he mention Boulanger.

She was also occasionally unhappy with both d’Annunzio and Pugno, who didn’t seem to match her ambition and eagerness to complete “La Ville Morte.” One ambivalent entry into her daybook that Brooks and Francis found says:

Went to Pugno’s — a little sadness and explanations — confession of the complex emotion made up of my pride as a woman, as a lover, and my sorrow as an artist — but this gratefully, tenderly and not decisively enough for things to get worse, then those rare and unforgettable hours — of sincerity, of emotion, of giving — what immense affection unites us — it is unbelievable.

Together, Pugno and Boulanger worked to get “La Ville Morte” onstage. They performed the score together, both singing at a piano. There was talk of premiering it at the Paris Opera, but it landed at the Opéra Comique, whose leader, Pierre-Barthélemy Gheusi, penciled it in for 1914. At the beginning of that year, Pugno fell ill and died in Moscow during a concert tour with Boulanger. When the war broke out, Gheusi canceled all productions and went on to serve in the French army.

After the war, he was removed from the company. D’Annunzio was no longer invested in “La Ville Morte,” and none of the work’s other supporters were still alive. Although Boulanger would later speak unfavorably about her compositions, her actions regarding the opera spoke otherwise. She befriended a young Leonard Bernstein, and gave him a copy of the score. (Whether it was the piano-vocal or full version isn’t known.) He expressed interest in performing it, but didn’t follow through.

G. Schirmer published the piano-vocal score, which is how Goren first encountered the opera. He was asked to commission an orchestration; Joseph Stillwell and Stephan Cwik made one for 11 players, with the help of David Conte, a former Boulanger protégé.

Beyond the music, though, the opera needed work, said Robin Guarino, who is directing the Catapult production (which first ran at the Greek National Opera earlier this year). “There were redundancies in the text and some basic editing that had to be done,” she said. “Boulanger would have done this herself had there been a world premiere.”

Once the opera came together, Guarino found herself amazed by what she was seeing and hearing, a mysterious and dramatic tale that unfurls with a score of lush poetry and, she said, “feminism sizzling under the surface.”

Listeners will hear music redolent of Debussy and Wagner, Goren said, but also of Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky. There is even some proto-jazz. “You can hear everything from the period reflected in this score,” he added. “There are basically two types of composers: synthesizers and innovators. I’m hoping that people will see her as a serious, valid composer, because she was the supreme synthesizer.”

Leonie Benesch And Frank Van Passel On The Mystery Of "Moresnet," A European Drama In Which A Time Capsule Carries A Deadly Message

Moresnet is a storied town and the setting for a European mystery thriller of the same name about a group of friends who dig up a time capsule buried two decades earlier, only to find their names listed inside with dates marked for their death.

Boris Van Severen ( Salamander ) is the chain-smoking Ben, who returns to Moresnet to bury his father. His homecoming sets in train events that inexorably lead to Thalamus, a huge neuro-technology corporation that in turn holds the key to a darkly secretive project known as Eterneco.

When Benesch sits down with Deadline she has just seen the finished show for the very first time at its international launch at Canneseries – the big-ticket drama event on the Côte d’Azur. “I loved every second… where I wasn’t on screen,” she says. “But then every time my face came on, I was like, oh, no, I was just getting into what was happening and now I have to deal with my own work.”

She was, however, pleased with the results. “I love what [director Frank Van Passel] and team have done in the edit and with the sound and I think it looks incredible. It’s thrilling, because obviously I know the script, but I was worried at the beginning that there might be too many things happening at the same time, but watching it, it doesn’t feel like that.”

The character of Eva inhabits a slick and polished world of corporate offices and penthouse apartments, which contrast with brooding scenes in the town of Moresnet, as the group of friends dig up the time capsule and peel back layers of an unfolding mystery – while knowing the imminent time and dates of their predicted deaths.

“On one level it’s a fast-speed, thrilling show,” says Frank Van Passel who directs and created the series with Jonas Van Geel and Jef Hoogmartens. “But there’s also the second thing, which is for me is the most important, and that’s the more philosophical part underneath, which has to do with an extreme existential angst.”

Hoogmartens was an ever-present on set. Benesch says, his presence and ability to answer any and all questions about character and plot freed her to focus on her performance. “I take great pleasure in not having to know everything,” she says. “All I need to know is about my character, her motivations where she wants to be and why she acts the way she does. I don’t necessarily feel like I have to understand the whole thing.”

European coproduction in vogue – and Moresnet is made by Lompvis and Caviar, which made the Oscar winning Sound of Metal , alongside Germany’s Flare Film, part of Newen Studios, and Amsterdam-based Pupkin. It will bow on Belgian SVOD Streamz and German streamer ZDF Neo. Newen Connect is handling international sales.

“We have the ingredients to talk to a broad public,” Van Passel says. “One of the reasons is in the in the heart of the show – it’s not a Belgian story, it’s not a German story is not a Dutch story… it’s a very European story, in the sense that it’s about crossing borders, it’s about people living close each other, but going through totally different experiences that suddenly start crossing over.”

In terms of what’s next for Benesch, it doesn’t look like it’ll be a period drama… although never say never. “I’m a little hesitant about period dramas, because I’ve done a lot of them,” she says. “However, if someone turns around and sends me a script that is really good, then I think I wouldn’t say no, because it always depends on who are the creative heads, who are the people I would get to work with, what’s the challenge and could I learn something new? All of these things matter.”
