The Best Luxury Train Journeys Through Spain

SPONSORED: From San Sebastian to Cadiz, Spain has a wide variety of must-see sights.

By Alex Martin

luxury train travel from seville

In this latest article in Elite Traveler’s ongoing Spain series, we take a look at the country’s luxury train journeys.

From San Sebastian in the north to Cadiz in the south, Spain has a wide variety of must-see sights including architectural marvels and natural wonders. If you have time on your side, a slow and winding train journey through this beautiful country is certainly the best way to see it. Fortunately, there are a number of itineraries for the elite traveler to choose from.

El Transcantábrico

Considered the closest thing to a luxury cruise ship on rails, El Transcantábrico is one of the finest long-haul trains in the world. In service for over 30 years, it is also Spain’s longest-running tourist train. No expense has been spared in decking out its carriages from the brass handles that help you onboard to the opulent custom beds fitted into the train’s suites. The décor takes guests back to the golden age of train travel while providing all the modern comforts of 21st Century travel. Indeed, the rooms are a match for any train in the world both in size and quality.

As well as first-class cuisine onboard, guests will have the chance to experience some of the finest restaurants that Spain has to offer along the route. Most itineraries include genuine gourmet destinations where you’ll be able to sample the most delicious traditional dishes of northern Spain and its world-class wines.

El Transcantábrico undertakes two routes throughout the year. The first, named Clásico, winds slowly through the gastronomical and archaeological wonders of Spain’s north over eight days and seven nights. Begin in the rugged northwest of Galicia and travel through multiple towns including Gijón, Oviedo and Bilbao as well as quaint fishing villages before reaching your destination in the charming León.

The second journey, named Gran Lujo, has been curated for the true gourmand. Setting off from San Sebastián, guests can begin their vacation by experiencing the world-famous pintxos bars in the city’s winding streets. San Sebastián is also home to some of the world’s finest restaurants, including 11 with Michelin stars. Those with the means to dine in these exclusive eateries will be wowed before they even step onboard.

Then, over eight days, you will head west towards Galicia, and have the chance to experience a number of historical towns and the stunning Picos de Europa National Park along the way. The route is very similar to the ancient pilgrimage of Camino de Santiago, famous for both its natural beauty and religious importance. Thousands of hikers undertake the 600-mile journey every year, but you will experience the best of it without walking a step more than you want to on this journey.

The Al Andalus

Leave Spain’s rugged northwest behind and head down to the parched south to experience the country’s other luxury train, Al Andalus. This train is known for its Belle Époque décor, its Grand Clase bedrooms and the spacious saloon cars lifted straight out of the 1920s. Once again, guests can expect first-class cuisine both onboard and in towns along the route.

There are two routes to choose from, but both depart from Seville. Our recent guide to Seville offered a tantalizing glimpse at a city steeped in history and cultural significance. Go on a tapas trail through the city’s cobbled maze before marveling at the medieval Real Alcazár de Sevilla, one of the city’s must-visit sights.

The first route winds through the best of Andalucía. From Sevilla, you head towards Cadiz and onto Jerez, home of the best sherry that Spain (and the world) has to offer.

Take in spectacular views in Ronda before visiting Granada and the magnificent Alhambra, a complex fortress dating back to 889AD. You will find more archaeological wonders waiting for you in Linares, Úbeda and Baeza (Unesco World Heritage Sites) before ending your trip in Cordoba.

The second route takes in the best of the Extremadura region. On a six-day tour, you will visit Roman amphitheaters in Mérida and a preserved historic quarter in Cáceres before heading to the Monfragüe National Park to spot some of the country’s most beautiful and elusive birds.

Make sure you spend as much time as possible wandering the streets of Toledo, a beautiful town where Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures coexisted for centuries. The resulting mix of architecture is a unique sight. The trip ends in Madrid, a vibrant capital city that offers endless excuses to extend your adventure.

A complete guide on train travel from Seville

train travel from seville

Train travel from Seville is extremely easy, comfortable and safe. Whether you want to travel to a long-distance destination or somewhere nearby, Renfe offers you several options.

In Spain, train ticket fares rely on a dynamic pricing system (similar to how airfares work) in which a tariff can vary depending on demand, restrictions, and how early you purchase your train tickets. So the best way to save money is purchasing your train tickets in advance.

Purchase your train tickets online, as soon as you know your travel dates to Seville!

A complete guide to train travel from Seville

One of the greatest time-saving ways of traveling to and from Seville is taking direct AVE high-speed trains.

And it’s something that I benefit from very often, especially between Madrid and Seville thanks to Renfe’s wonderful AVE high-speed trains.

Every day I get dozens of emails asking me about train travel from Seville, how to purchase Renfe tickets online and what’s the best itinerary possible using the train. That’s why after many years using Renfe trains myself, I decided to come up with a complete guide related to train travel in Spain based on my own experience.

The following tutorial contains all the information that you need to know to make the most out of the Spanish train service.

Here is a complete summary of all the guide:

1. Spain trains: everything you need to know 2. How to purchase AVE train tickets online 3. 7 tricks to get cheap train tickets in Spain 4. Renfe: Spain’s state-owned railway company 5. AVE trains: Renfe high-speed trains in Spain 6. The Combinado Cercanías ticket 7. The Renfe Spain Pass 8. Avlo: Renfe’s high speed low cost trains 9. OUIGO trains: SNCF’s high speed low cost company 10. iryo: Spain’s low cost high-speed rail operator 11. 7 packing tips to comply with your train baggage allowance

Train travel from Seville to other destinations

Although geographically quite remote from other major Spanish cities (Madrid is 525 km distant), Seville is still well-connected by train. Fast AVE services run direct from Seville to Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Fast trains to the capital take just 2.5 hours.

Regional rail connections to other cities in Andalucía are excellent.

  • Córdoba and Jerez (the home of sherry) are both an hour or less away.
  • The coastal cities of Málaga and Cádiz can both be reached within two hours.
  • You can also reach Ronda, Antequera, Linares, Jaén, and the gorgeous small towns of Úbeda and Baeza.

Advantages of train travel from Seville

Discover the main advantages of train travel to and from Seville and why travelling by train is the perfect option for your next adventure.

You arrive in the heart of Seville

The Santa Justa train station is situated very close to the city center.

Arrive in comfort and step off the train straight to your accommodation . Take an uber/taxi/bus with no worries about driving in the middle of an unfamiliar city or trying to park, which is a nightmare in Seville!

No need to catch a transfer , like you would do from Seville airport which is located far out of town.

And with no car you are not contributing to the major traffic problems in most cities.

It’s the most comfortable way to travel from Seville

This is one of my main reasons I take and recommend the train – it is so much more comfortable and spacious than driving or flying. Crammed into a metal tube in the sky with a few hundred other people with recycled air and limited leg room is my idea of hell.

On a train there are no seat belts – you can get up, walk along the carriages and often alight at stations along the way for a stroll.

Enjoy natural daylight through large windows made for viewing the passing landscape. No small portholes with shutters and strip lighting on trains!

And if you travel with children the space and comfort of a train is always going to be more better than the cramped confines of a plane. Car journeys can be a nightmare too with bored kids constantly asking “how much longer until we get there…?” .

Your holiday starts the minute you board the train

No hanging around for 3 hours at the airport waiting endless lines and going through awful security checks. Arrive at the train station and board your train!

And whilst your vacation only starts when you step off the plane the train journey is part of the holiday.

Sit back relax and enjoy the beautiful views. Instead of endless empty skies you can enjoy the passing Spanish countryside and gorgeous views as you travel which is impossible when flying or driving and concentrating on the road.

On a weeklong journey from Seville or Malaga, you’ll take in the near-ancient wonders of Al Andalus – Islamic Spain. Successive Moorish dynasties have left their mark on the region’s great cities, with imposing palace-forts and ornate mosque-cathedrals vying for your attention. In between, you’ll visit such millennia-old greats as Cádiz and Ronda; wrapped in sea and mountains respectively, their Moorish grandeur sits alongside Roman ruins and a Phoenician prehistory. There’s also the twin Renaissance delights of Úbeda and Baeza, whose competing aristocracy sought to outdo each other in successive architectural flourishes. You’ll take it all in on a luxurious rail journey aboard the Al Andalus through Andalucia, whose Belle Époque grandeur first hosted royalty. And, after enjoying indulgent dining, cocktail evenings and show cooking onboard, you’ll explore each destination with everything from guided tours to wine tastings and cultural performances.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1 uk/seville.

Begin your trip with complimentary airport lounge access before flying into Seville, where you will make your way to your historic accommodation. Whether it’s Moorish defences, Roman ruins or Christianity’s exuberance, it seems as if all the world has left its mark on this thousand-year-old city of Seville. Its Gothic cathedral proudly exhibits an Islamic minaret as a bell tower and the Alcázar is a great Moorish castle that cloaks a beautiful royal residence. You’ll also visit the General Archive of the Indies, a 16th-century merchants’ exchange that documents the rich history of the Spanish Empire.

Stay: Corral del Rey, Seville (Deluxe)

Day 2 Seville/Jerez

Meet at the historic Hotel Alfonso XIII for a welcome lunch with a panoramic view of the city, followed by a visit to the Plaza de Espana. You’ll then board the luxurious Al Andalus to make the journey to Jerez. First built for members of the British monarchy to travel between Calais and the French Riviera, cabins recall all the grandeur of the Belle Époque, featuring plush fabric sofas, gilded wood panelling and even hydromassage showers. The lounge carriages are equally regal, host to dances, cocktail evenings and live performances along with gourmet dining and show cooking. A welcome drink on the train and presentation of the crew, before dinner on board while the train heads for Jerez and the first overnight stop.

Stay: Al Andalus Luxury Train (Deluxe)

Day 3 Jerez/Cadiz/Jerez

After breakfast, join a coach for the short journey to Cadiz, popularly known as "la Tacita de Plata" (the Silver Teacup) and considered the oldest city in the West. You will have free time to immerse yourselves in Cadiz's charms at leisure, and after lunch return to Jerez in the afternoon for free time and dinner.

Meals: B L D

Day 4 Jerez/Ronda

This morning you’ll be introduced to the region’s wealth of oenological delights, with a tasting visit to one of Jerez’s fabled wine (sherry) cellars. Your cultural education will continue will continue with a visit to the region’s famous equestrian ballet. Set to traditional music, it’s simply titled ‘How the Andalucian Horses Dance’. Lunch on board the train as it heads towards Ronda, where you will have dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 5 Ronda/Cordoba

While Cádiz dates back three millennia, Ronda can also count itself among Spain’s oldest cities, having been established in a relatively sprightly 9th century BC. As such, it owes much of its charm to its Moorish past, with its La Ciudad old town filled with Islamic mosques and palaces. To complete the picture, throw in legendary bullrings, pretty Spanish plazas, great fortress walls and delicate churches. And, like its older cousin, it enjoys a spectacular backdrop. Swapping sea for mountain peaks, it’s dramatically perched on a great inland plateau fissured into a 100m-deep gorge. This is the beauty that has won praise from the Romantic likes of Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. Lunch on board while the train returns to Moorish Andalucia with a tour of Córdoba. Once the capital of Islamic Spain, it laid claim to the title of Western Europe’s largest and most culturally rich city, here enjoy dinner and overnight on the train.

Day 6 Cordoba–Úbeda–Baeza–Granada

Cordoba is centred around the Mezquita. Ranking among the Islamic world’s finest architectural achievements, its silver-and-gold domes look down on thousands of marble columns and hundreds of chandeliers. But, as the region’s history goes, the Mezquita was to be converted into a 16th-century cathedral, adding grand Renaissance flourishes while retaining much of the building’s thousand-year-old charm. It’s a fitting metaphor for the rest of the city, with the likes of Moorish forts sitting alongside pretty 17th-century plazas and Renaissance palaces. Lunch on board the train before disembarking at Linares, you’ll board a coach to tour its pair of nearby Renaissance gems. You’ll start with Úbeda whose 16th-century rulers – ever the showmen – sought to improve their courtly esteem with the ever-favoured Italian aesthetic. The result? Great chapels with façades of Greek gods, a town hall that’s more palace than place of work and a hospital that’s furnished with marble columns and frescoed staircases. Next-door Baeza was also suitably enamoured with the Italian Renaissance, its 16th-century aristocracy keen not to be outshone, of course. Its Gothic cathedral, itself borne from a demolished mosque, was beautified with classical flourishes and a series of handsome palaces, plazas and delightful chapels were quickly added. After your tour you’ll continue on to Granada.

Day 7 Granada

From their stronghold in Granada the Nasrid dynasty once ruled over much of Andalucia. It’s a 300-year-long power grab that is immortalised in the emirate’s Alhambra. A UNESCO-listed wonder, this palace-fort’s stern walls hide a royal interior that forms one of the greatest examples of Islamic architecture’s fineries. Delicate arches are carved into detailed motifs, fountains trickle lazily and the rooms of the royal quarters are honeycombed into intricate lattices. And it sits among a dizzying collection of gilded basilicas, 16th-century monasteries and Renaissance palaces. You’ll take it all in on your city tour.

4 ways to get from seville to granada (& how to do it).

As two of the gems in Andalucía’s glittering crown, Seville and Granada are essential stops on a first-time itinerary of Southern Spain. But what is the best way to get from Seville to Granada?

This is where I can help. I have travelled between these two historic cities using different means of transport, and have learnt what works best.

Remove the guesswork with my guide to travelling between Seville and Granada.

Some articles on this website contain affiliate links. This means that I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through these links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases . Read the full disclosure here .

In a nutshell

  • Distance from Seville to Granada: 155 miles
  • Quickest journey : By train. 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Cheapest journey: By bus. 3 hours
  • Most flexible option: By car. 2 hours 50 minutes

How I did it (& my recommendations)

I have travelled between Seville and Granada twice.

In the early noughties, I did a road trip of Southern Spain and visited Granada as a day trip by rental car. Whilst this was perfectly feasible, I felt a little short-changed.

There are more things to see in Granada than the Alhambra Palace and it deserves at least a few days of your Andalucía itinerary. That said, if a day is all you have then go for it.

More recently, I took the train from Seville to Granada and stayed for three nights. The journey was easy, quick and comfortable.

people walking along a steep path with stone walls on either side and the rooftops of granada in background

With a journey time of 2 hours 30 minutes, the train was the quickest way of getting from Seville to Granada. Although I did consider taking the bus , this took three hours and Granada’s bus station is around two miles from the city centre. However, if you are travelling on a budget, going by bus can save you a tidy sum of money.   If I were considering a day trip to Granada again, I would consider joining a group tour . Not only will this maximise the available time but it will also include ticket reservations for the Alhambra.

The train from Seville to Granada

Thanks to high-speed direct trains, getting from Seville to Granada by rail is easy.

Reaching speeds of up to 155 miles per hour, the super speedy Avant and AVE trains run between Granada and Seville around six times a day. The journey time can be as little as 2 hours 30 minutes.

Train services

Spanish trains are run by the national rail operator  Renfe .

Renfe trains are amongst the best in Europe. They are clean and comfortable and have storage spaces for luggage, usually on the racks above your head and at the end of each car. Air-conditioning, free wifi and power sockets usually come as standard.

Renfe offers two classes of travel : Standard or Turista (2nd class) and Comfort or Turista Plus (1st class). Within these travel classes, three fare types are on offer on the high-speed AVE trains:

  • Básico (Basic): The cheapest fare for travel in Standard class.
  • Elige (Choice): A semi-flexible fare. You can choose between Elige (2nd Class seat) or Elige Comfort (1st class seat).
  • Premium : The most flexible fare. For this, you get a Comfort (1st class seat) with the option to add an at-seat meal if available.

In my experience, Standard class on Spanish trains is more than adequate.

Buying train tickets

I recommend booking your train ticket from Seville to Granada in advance. These are popular destinations and prices usually increase the closer you get to the time of departure.

Booking your train ticket through Renfe , the national rail operator, gets you the best prices. However, the Renfe website often doesn’t play nice. On more than one occasion it refused to recognise major destinations for me and it can be a little picky about non-Spanish credit and debit cards.

For a stress-free experience, I use Omio for Spanish train travel. You will pay a small booking fee but it’s a clear booking engine and a lot less hassle.

Where is the train station in Seville?

Trains for Granada leave Seville’s main Santa Justa station, located northeast of the city centre. It’s a 25-minute walk from Seville Cathedral in the heart of the city’s Old Town.

Where is the train station in Granada?

Granada has a small railway station that is located in Avenida de Andaluces, in the heart of the city. It’s a 20-minute walk from Granada Cathedral on the edge of the Albaicín.

The bus from Seville to Granada

Buses are the most cost-effective way of getting from Seville to Granada.

Alsa operates bus services between Seville and Granada. The journey time is 3 hours.

I have used these buses on other routes and found them very comfortable. A one-way non-flexible fare can cost as little as €12; expect to pay more for a fully flexible fare.

You can check bus times on Alsa’s website here . I don’t recommend using Omio to book your bus ticket as they only offer the more expensive flexible fares.

Where is the bus station in Seville?

Buses leave Seville’s Plaza de Armas Bus Station, just under a mile northwest of the Old Town. It’s a 20-minute walk from Seville Cathedral.

Where is the bus station in Granada?

Granada Bus Station is on the Carretera de Jaen, about two miles north of the city centre. You will need to take the number 33 bus from outside the bus station via Gran Via.

Buses leave every 15 minutes and the journey takes between 10 and 15 minutes. You can buy your ticket from the driver.

Driving from Seville to Granada

For the ultimate convenience and flexibility, drive from Seville to Granada.

Following the main A92 road through the towns of Osuna and Mollina, this journey will take you less than three hours.

small open plaza with2 benches and whitewashed buildings

For a stress-free day trip to Granada from Seville, join a day tour.

Someone else takes care of all of the arrangements, you benefit from the knowledge of a local guide and it is affordable. All you have to do is relax and enjoy the day.

Day tours to Granada from Seville include your tickets to the Alhambra Palace (a day tour is also a way to bag a reservation if tickets are sold out on the day you wish to visit).

There is a valuable bonus. The loneliness of solo travel is real and day tours are one of the best ways to meet other travellers .

For instance; this comprehensive 13-hour excursion has been highly rated by other travellers and includes guided tours of the Alhambra Palace and the Albaicín. Tickets for the Nasrid Palaces, Alcazaba and Generalife Gardens are included.
