Why Lexi Thompson could lose her LPGA Tour card despite being ranked 21st in world

A big topic in golf over the past month or so has been whether Justin Thomas, who’s been out of form all season but is undoubtedly one of the game’s biggest stars, would make the Ryder Cup team.

Lexi Thompson, who’s one of the most recognizable players on the LPGA Tour, is in danger of losing her LPGA Tour card. She is currently ranked 157th in the Race to the CME Globe and has missed the cut in three of the four major championships she’s played this year.

It’s unclear if she will be able to stay in the top 100 and keep her card, but she will be able to play in the Solheim cup due to her world ranking. She’s fallen all the way to 21st this season, but that’s still high enough to earn a spot.

Should she lose her status, Lexi will have the option to use her one-time exemption that she earned from being in the top 20 in career earnings..

On Thursday, Jordan Spieth shot an opening round 73 (+1) at the Valero Texas Open. In typical Spieth fashion, the 73 was relatively unconventional with circles and squares all over the scorecard.

On the front nine, Spieth four bogeys and two birdies to make the turn in 38 (+2). On the back nine, things got even more interesting. The three-time major champion made a double-bogey on the par-5 14th followed by an incredible hole-in-one on the par 3-16th.

After the round, Spieth said “I’m playing so much better than I’ve been scoring”.

He added that he “drove the living piss out of the ball today”, which caused frustration because one bad drive on 15 created a big number. Spieth then said, “my driving stats don’t look the way they actually feel”.

Anthony Kim says doctors told him that he ‘may not have much time left’ ahead of LIV return

lexi thompson tour card

While speaking in with the media in his pre-tournament conference for LIV Miami, Anthony Kim revealed that he was told by doctors that he “may not have much time left” at some point during his twelve years away from professional golf.

“I mean, you know, not to get too far into it, but when doctors are telling you that you may not have much time left, that’s a pretty rude awakening. I still think about it to this day when I’m out there and I get frustrated with my golf, you know, how far I’ve come. And other people don’t need to know the journey. I’m going to share it, and the people that find inspiration and strength from it, I hope it can influence them in a positive way. But yeah, it was — I got to a point where, you know, I may not be here speaking to you guys.”

Anthony Kim when asked about his low point over the past 12 years: "I mean, you know, not to get too far into it, but when doctors are telling you that you may not have much time left, that's a pretty rude awakening. I still think about it to this day when I'm out there and I… — Matt Vincenzi (@MattVincenziPGA) April 4, 2024

This week, “AK” is making his first start in the United States since his return. Kim has played in two tournaments in both Jeddah and Hong Kong and has finished 53rd and 50th.

Despite the poor results on the leaderboard, Kim shot a 65 in the final round at Hong Kong Golf Club, which is incredibly impressive considering he told David Feherty in an interview this week that he picked up a club for the first time three months before LIV Jeddah.

The 38-year-old credits his two-year old daughter, Bella, for saving his life and being his inspiration.

“I got professional help. I think that I didn’t deal with a lot of the trauma and whatever came from my life, and I buried it because I didn’t want to show anybody weakness, right. And I thought by showing vulnerability, that was weakness, and I’ve come to a point in my life where I don’t care if somebody thinks that about me or not.

“My daughter is all I care about, and I know it almost sounds corny for me to say but as long as she’s proud of me, I’m a happy man.”

Kim is set to tee it up for the first round of LIV Miami at Trump Doral on Friday.

Notah Begay gives gloomy update on Tiger’s injuries ahead of 2024 Masters

lexi thompson tour card

While speaking with USA Today , Tiger Woods’ good friend, Notah Begay III, discussed the health of the 15-time major champion.

“He’s trying to formulate a strategy and approach that he can work within given the constraints that he’s presented with. And he’s got some constraints,” Begay said. “He’s got zero mobility in that left ankle and really has low-back challenges now, which he knew he was going to have.”

At Begay’s tournament he hosts that Tiger’s son Charlie played in, Tiger told him, “My ankle doesn’t move. So, something’s going to take the stress. I mean, the stress is going to transfer somewhere else.”

At the Genesis Invitational, that pain transferred to Woods’ back, causing him to withdraw from the tournament.

“For the past couple months, he’s been trying to find a way to recover,” Begay added. “He can play the golf. We always knew the question was going to be ‘Can he walk the 72 (holes)?’ That’s still up in the air. But can he recover, from one round to the next? That’s the biggest question that I really don’t know and he’s not going to know either until he gets out there and figures out whether the way he’s prepared for this year’s Masters is going to work for him.”

Last year, Woods made the cut at Augusta, but was forced to withdraw over the weekend due to plantar fasciitis.

The week will be sure to test Tiger, as Augusta National is one of the most difficult walks in golf.

Lexi Thompson appoints new full-time caddie after year-end flourish

Lexi Thompson will have a new looper in 2024.

Cliff Hawkins/Getty Images

Lexi Thompson ‘s 2023 was a year of two halves, and it seems she’s trying to keep all the good vibes from the second half going in 2024.

Thompson began the season coming off a high as she had picked up her first worldwide win in three years in the fall of ’22 and risen to 6th in the world. But, in 2023, she couldn’t keep that momentum going and missed the cut in seven of her first 11 events.

In the fall, though, her year started to take a turn for the better when she still qualified for U.S. Solheim Cup team by way of her Rolex World Ranking. She tied for 19th at the Kroger Queen City Championship leading up to the matches, went 3-1-0 in Spain, played in and nearly made the cut at the PGA Tour’s Shriners Children’s Open and finished the year with three top-10s in her last three starts. She also partnered with Rickie Fowler to finish T6 in the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational last month.

Those last three starts on the LPGA Tour came with a new caddie, Colton Heisey, and it seems Thompson is aiming to keep that mojo with Heisey rolling. Both Thompson and Heisey announced on their social media pages, that he and Thompson will be working together on a full-time basis in 2024.

“I’m super grateful for the opportunity to work with one of the best to ever do it,” Heisey wrote in post that was also shared by Monday Q Info on Twitter. “Looking forward to a great season and doing everything I can to contribute to her success.”

Super happy for @Cheisey3317 he will be on the bag for @Lexi this year. Lexi’s good run at the end of last year was with Colton on the bag, so will be interesting to see what they do this season. pic.twitter.com/Foaj3QKrKm — Monday Q Info (@acaseofthegolf1) January 6, 2024

Heisey is the fourth non-family member to caddie for Thompson in her career. He caddied on the PGA Tour for rookie Brandon Matthews in 2023, but Matthews failed to keep his PGA Tour card for this season.

In the midst of one of her roughest years, Lexi Thompson faces her biggest challenge.

Thompson was coming off her first top-10 finish of the year two weeks ago when she said her management company told her the Shriners Children’s Open had offered her a sponsor exemption to play on the PGA Tour.

“It was basically an automatic ‘yes,’” Thompson said Tuesday at the TPC Summerlin after playing a practice round with Michael Kim and Ben Griffin. “I’m just very honored that they want me here to compete this week, and hopefully send out an inspiring message.”

Thompson, 28, will be the seventh woman to play on the PGA Tour, and the first since Brittany Lincicome in the 2018 Barbasol Championship.

The most notable 20 years ago was Annika Sorenstam at Colonial as a sponsor exemption and Suzy Whaley at the Greater Hartford Open as the PGA section champion. It had been more than 50 years since a woman played on the PGA Tour.

And then there was Michelle Wie West , who played eight times on the PGA Tour. She shot a 68 at the 2004 Sony Open at age 14, missing the cut by one shot.

Thompson said success on the 7,255-yard course would be measured by more than her score.

“Good golf is a successful week,” she said. “If I can leave here inspiring others, and especially the kids — the Shriners kids — that’s what it’s all about and what this tournament is. There is more than just playing golf.

“If I can inspire one individual, I would feel like I’m making progress,” he said. “Of course, yes, I want to play good. There is more to life than performing well.”

Her big challenge comes during a year in which she has fallen to No. 25 in the women’s world ranking and was in jeopardy of losing her LPGA Tour card until registering top 10s the last two weeks in Arkansas and Texas.

Thompson has gone 73 starts on the LPGA Tour since her last win at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 2019. She did win last year in a Saudi-funded Ladies European Tour event. She started to turn around her game at the Solheim Cup, going 3-1 in Spain as Europe retained the cup.

“This course is probably a little longer than what she’s used to, but I thought she’s hitting it really well and she’s going to have a good chance ... heading into this week,” Kim said.

Peter Malnati, who serves on the PGA Tour policy board, referred to it as a gimmick last week when the exemption was announced, and then he quickly regretted his choice of words.

Las Vegas is part of the FedEx Cup Fall, where players are trying to make sure they keep their PGA Tour cards for next year or even qualify for the first two $20 million events in 2024.

“I know that Lexi at times has been one of the top players on the LPGA Tour and she’s obviously very athletic. Distance won’t be a problem — she’ll hit it far enough,” Malnati said. “My gut reaction when I saw that was like the tournament ... just trying to drum up interest. I don’t think we’re going to need to resort to gimmicks to drum up interest.

“I shouldn’t have said that,” he added. “I don’t know that having Lexi play is a gimmick, but I don’t think the tournaments are going to have to go to those kind of lengths to drum up interest and get storylines that they can sell because I think these events are actually going to have a lot of meaning.”

Thompson is used to the spotlight. She qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open at age 12, making her the youngest qualifier at the time. She won her first LPGA event at age 16 to become its youngest winner, a record that lasted a year until 15-year-old Lydia Ko came along.

She also has had her share of blunders, most notably losing a five-shot lead on the back nine at the U.S. Women’s Open in 2021 at Olympic Club, and getting docked a four-shot penalty for replacing her ball closer to the hole at the ANA Inspiration in 2017.

The spotlight and any negativity about playing a PGA Tour event don’t seem to be a problem.

“I’m out here playing of course with the men, but I want to leave a message just to the kids that I’m following my dreams and to go after what you want with a positive mindset and don’t let anybody’s comments or reaction get in the way of that,” Thompson said.

The first step is to try to stay all four days. Thompson tees off Thursday afternoon with PGA Tour rookies Kevin Roy and Trevor Werbylo, both outside the top 175 in the FedEx Cup and trying to crack the top 125 to keep their cards.

Thompson currently ranks 12th in driving distance on the LPGA Tour at 270 yards. She sometimes hits less club off the tee, and that’s one aspect that appeals to her about this week.

“Here it’s driver on every hole, and I definitely like that,” Thompson said. “Fire away and swing, get the most distance I can on a few of those holes.”

In face of controversial invite, Lexi Thompson playing for more than just a score

1602964430

Richard Heathcote/R&A

It happens every year at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. PGA Tour players meet and interact with kids who are sometimes suffering grave or debilitating illnesses. This year, for the first time, the young girls among that group will see someone who most resembles them, and LPGA Tour player Lexi Thompson insists she’s focusing on that connection more than how she’ll play at TPC Summerlin as only the seventh woman to compete in a PGA Tour event.

“Yes, good golf is a successful week,” Thompson, 28, said on Tuesday in a press conference. But, she added, “If I can leave here inspiring others, and especially the kids, the Shriners kids, that's what it's all about and what this tournament is. There is more than just playing golf.”

Thompson, an 11-time winner on the LPGA, received the invite from the Shriners in late September and said on Tuesday that playing in a PGA Tour event “means the world to me.”

Predictably, she and the tournament organizers faced some backlash for taking a spot in the field from a male player who could use the opportunity to further his earnings in the fall events that are critical to players attempting to re-earn their PGA Tour cards for next season. Veteran Peter Malnati, a member of the PGA Tour Policy Board, initially reacted by calling Thompson’s inclusion a “gimmick.” But he back peddled on those comments later, adding, “ I shouldn’t have said that. I don’t know that having Lexi play is a gimmick, but I don’t think the tournaments are going to have to go to those kind of lengths to drum up interest and get storylines that they can sell because I think these events are actually going to have a lot of meaning.”

Asked about her reaction to the comments on Tuesday, Thompson said, “No reaction. I knew some comments were going to happen with anything. Like I said, I'm out here playing of course with the men, but I want to leave a message just to the kids that I'm following my dreams and to go after what you want with a positive mindset and don't let anybody's comments or reaction get in the way of that.

“But it’s all good,” she added with a smile. “I mean, I expected it.”

The invite may be controversial, but its place in history is noteworthy. Six women have preceded Thompson in teeing it up against the men—the last being Brittany Lincicome on a sponsor’s invite in the 2018 Barbasol Championship. Lincicome missed the cut, though she shot 71 in the second round to join Michelle Wie West as the only women to break par in a PGA Tour event. Wie West holds the record of eight starts against the men, but she never reached the weekend. The only woman to make the cut is Babe Didrikson Zaharias, who pulled it off twice in 1945.

Those who followed Zaharias in playing against the men were Shirley Spork, Annika Sorenstam, Suzy Whaley, Wie West and Lincicome.

Thompson, who struggled badly for much of the LPGA season but is coming off resurgent play in which she went 3-1-0 in the Solheim Cup and finished solo fifth last week in Texas, faces long odds to make the weekend in Las Vegas. Last year, the cut came at four under par at TPC Summerlin, which is listed at 7,225 yards—or about 700 yards longer than Old American Golf Club was set up in last week’s LPGA Ascendent.

Though Thompson is among the longest hitters on the LPGA, ranking 12th in driving distance at 270 yards, there are six par 4s at Summerlin that measure more than 440 yards and two that are longer than 460. (One par 5 is listed at 606.) That will put a lot of long irons and fairway woods in her hands.

Still, Thompson said she is relishing the opportunity to “ bomb driver everywhere.”

“The last few weeks I didn't hit too many drivers, but you still have to hit the golf shots on the LPGA Tour,” Thompson said. “It's just I don't get to take advantage of sometimes my length on a few of those holes.

“Here, it's driver on every hole, and I definitely like that. Fire away and swing, get the most distance I can on a few of those holes.”

On Tuesday, Thompson played in a practice round with Michael Kim and Ben Griffin, and both came away impressed.

“I thought she’s hitting it great,” Kim said on the LPGA’s Instagram account. “This course is probably a little longer than she’s used to, but I thought she was hitting it well.”

Added Griffin, “She was striping it. She was hitting it closer than us on a few holes. That’s to be expected; she has a ton of talent. She can handle it out there. Being firmer conditions, it’s a little different, but I think she’s adjusting well. She played awesome today and I think she can compete this week and have a chance to at least make it to the weekend.”

In his interview last week, Malnati said what many are probably thinking about Thompson’s appearance: “ Who knows what’ll happen; she may go play really well, and it’ll be huge. She may play absolutely terrible and finish 132nd. ”

At least for Thompson, the results seem hardly the point.

“If I can inspire one individual, I would feel like I'm making progress,” she said. “Of course, yes, I want to play good. That's a whole 'nother story. There is more to life than performing well. That's what I want to do, inspire others.”

The 100 LPGA Tour players who got their 2024 cards after The Annika driven by Gainbridge

lexi thompson tour card

The 2023 LPGA Tour regular season concluded with the end of The Annika driven by Gainbridge at Pelican, with 100 players locking up their LPGA Tour cards and status for the 2024 season, which begins immediately after the Race to the CME Globe champion is crowned at the CME Group Tour Championship.

Only players finishing in the top 100 in Race to the CME Globe points retain their cards in full. Ranking on the money list doesn't matter.

The players who finish 101st through 150th in the regular season standing are typically eligible to compete in the LPGA Q-Series, a two-event series comprising those players, those ranked 11th through 35th on the Epson Tour season money list, as well as players who moved through Q-School Stage II. Through that series, 45 LPGA Tour cards are decided.

Players who finished 101st through 150th on the regular season Race to the CME Globe points list earn conditional LPGA Tour status for next season.

Of course, players who have better status through wins in LPGA Tour-sanctioned events retain that status.

Non-members who would have earned enough Race to the CME Globe points to qualify for the playoffs also earn membership for next season.

“This course is probably a little longer than what she's used to, but I thought she's hitting it really well and she's going to have a good chance ... heading into this week,” Kim said.

“I know that Lexi at times has been one of the top players on the LPGA Tour and she's obviously very athletic. Distance won't be a problem — she'll hit it far enough,” Malnati said. "My gut reaction when I saw that was like the tournament ... just trying to drum up interest. I don't think we're going to need to resort to gimmicks to drum up interest.

“I shouldn't have said that,” he added. “I don't know that having Lexi play is a gimmick, but I don’t think the tournaments are going to have to go to those kind of lengths to drum up interest and get storylines that they can sell because I think these events are actually going to have a lot of meaning.”

Thompson is used to the spotlight. She qualified for the U.S. Women's Open at age 12, making her the youngest qualifier at the time. She won her first LPGA event at age 16 to become its youngest winner, a record that lasted a year until 15-year-old Lydia Ko came along.

She also has had her share of blunders, most notably losing a five-shot lead on the back nine at the U.S. Women's Open in 2021 at Olympic Club, and getting docked a four-shot penalty for replacing her ball closer to the hole at the ANA Inspiration in 2017.

The spotlight and any negativity about playing a PGA Tour event don't seem to be a problem.

She sometimes hits less club off the tee, and that's one aspect that appeals to her about this week.

“Here it’s driver on every hole, and I definitely like that,” Thompson said. “Fire away and swing, get the most distance I can on a few of those holes.”

In the midst of one of her roughest years, Lexi Thompson faces her biggest challenge.

Thompson was coming off her first top-10 finish of the year two weeks ago when she said her management company told her the Shriners Children's Open had offered her a sponsor exemption to play on the PGA Tour.

Recommended Videos

“It was basically an automatic ‘yes,’” Thompson said Tuesday at the TPC Summerlin after playing a practice round with Michael Kim and Ben Griffin. “I'm just very honored that they want me here to compete this week, and hopefully send out an inspiring message.”

25 in the women's world ranking and was in jeopardy of losing her LPGA Tour card until registering top 10s the last two weeks in Arkansas and Texas.

“This course is probably a little longer than what she's used to, but I thought she's hitting it really well and she's going to have a good chance ... heading into this week,” Kim said.

“I’m out here playing of course with the men, but I want to leave a message just to the kids that I’m following my dreams and to go after what you want with a positive mindset and don’t let anybody’s comments or reaction get in the way of that,” Thompson said.

Who are Lexi Thompson’s Parents? Exploring LPGA Tour Pro’s Family

L exi Thompson has become the talk of the town! She, along with Rose Zhang , will be the first female participant in the charity event, The Match 2024 . With this achievement, all eyes are now on the LPGA Tour player. Fans are curious to know every detail about her love life and her personal life. However, not much is known about both.

While many know the golfer is a young prodigy, her parents are not always in the limelight. Let’s take a look at her early life and her parents, who also deserve appreciation.

Lexi Thompson’s parents are her pillar of support

The LPGA star was born to Judy Thompson and Scott Thompson on February 10, 1995. She was born in Coral Springs, Florida, and showed an interest in golf from her early days. It was her father, Scott Thompson , who introduced young Lexi to the game of golf. She has time and again thanked her father for doing so.

The LPGA star began golfing at the age of 5 , and she began showcasing her natural talents in the game. Looking at her interest in golf, her parents decided to home school her so she could devote her time to the holistic sport. The young star used to spend most of her time practicing during childhood. Her father used to accompany her at tournaments as a caddie, which he didn’t stop doing even after she turned pro.

On one hand, her father taught her the fine details of the game. But on the other hand, her mother, Judy Thompson, taught her mental fortitude. Lexi Thompson’s mother acted as a pillar of support for her. She was diagnosed with breast cancer when the LPGA star was eleven years old. But she advised her daughter to follow her dreams instead of worrying about her.

Following this, Thompson became the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open as a 12-year-old. But back in 2017, Judy was diagnosed again with uterine cancer . Again, she did not let this major ailment come in between the career paths of her children. “ I want all my children to continue with what their dreams are,” the LPGA player’s mother said.

She also attended her daughter’s event at the US Women’s Open in July 2017, a month after her operation. “ Life can’t stop,”  she added. Along with her parents, her two brothers have also helped the LPGA star throughout her career.

Thompson’s brothers played a huge role in her career

She has two elder brothers, Nicholas Thompson and Curtis Thompson. Both of them, like her, are professional golfers. The eldest of the bunch, Nicholas Thompson , turned pro in 2005 and joined the PGA Tour in 2006 and the Korn Ferry Tour in 2007. In his professional career, he has won the 2007 HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship, along with a 2005 Jones Cup Invitational win as an amateur.

Her second brother, Curtis Thompson, turned pro in 2014. The next year, he started playing on the Korn Ferry Tour. He earned the PGA Tour card in 2022 but failed to keep it because of disappointing performances. While both brothers themselves are professional golfers, they also helped their sister enhance her career.

Since she started golfing at 5 years old, her elder brothers and father have taught her everything. Her father was her bagman from the age of 9 until she turned 17. Lexi Thompson claimed her first-ever win, and her only major tournament win is her most cherished memory.

When asked the reason why, she said because her dad accompanied her, carrying her bag. Apart from her dad, her two brothers also accompanied her on the greens. Curtis caddied for her when she won the 2018 CME Group Tour Championship.

Furthermore, Nicholas Thompson helped prepare her for her first US Women’s Open in 2007. She was going to be the youngest player there. So her elder brother helped her in practice rounds. Even though Nicholas had a Nationwide Tour event that week, he first helped Lexi Thompson prepare, then went for his event.

With her whole family contributing to her career, no wonder the LPGA Tour player has reached the heights she is at now. What are your thoughts on this unwavering support from her family? Let us know in the comments section below.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

The 28-year-old tied for seventh in her first start of the year at the season-opening Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, and after tying for 54th at the Honda LPGA Thailand in her second start of the season, quickly righted the ship with a solid performance in Southern California. Hull is one of many players in this week’s field that teed it up at last year’s LPGA Drive On Championship at Superstition Mountain, which was held just 30 miles away in Gold Canyon, Ariz., and she finished in the top 10 that week, tying for seventh after recording a four-day total of 16-under at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club. Statistically, Hull is ranked in the top 25 in two major strokes-gained categories according to KPMG Performance Insights, including strokes gained driving, in which she’s fifth (+0.80) and strokes gained tee to green (+0.97), in which she’s 25th.

Lexi Thompson will be looking to bounce back from a missed cut last week at Palos Verdes Golf Club this week in Gilbert, Ariz. She is making her third start of the year at Seville Golf and Country Club and is working to improve upon a season-best result of T16 that she earned at the LPGA Drive On Championship in her first start of the year. She missed the cut at the LPGA Drive On Championship at Superstition Mountain last year, a Phoenix-area performance she’ll also be hoping to better at Seville Golf and Country Club this week. According to KPMG Performance Insights, Thompson currently sits inside the top 25 in both strokes gained approach (21, +0.86) and strokes gained tee to green (25, +0.99), two statistical categories bolstered by her greens in regulation percentage of 75 percent, which is fifth-best this season on the LPGA Tour.

Alison Lee added another top-three finish to her collection at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, tying for third at Palos Verdes Golf Club after a final-round, 1-over 72 and after missing out on a playoff with Nelly Korda and Ryann O’Toole by just a single stroke. It’s the fourth time that Lee has finished in the top three in her last five starts dating back to the 2023 BMW Ladies Championship, and according to KPMG Performance Insights, Lee has gained over two strokes per round (+2.20) on the field in that span of events. It was the 22nd top-10 result that Lee has earned since joining the LPGA Tour in 2015 and is the 29-year-old’s first top 10 of the year as she finished in a tie for 51st in her season debut at the HSBC Women’s World Championship after being forced to extend her offseason to rehabilitate a hand injury caused by a dog bite. Lee played solidly in the first three rounds of the LPGA Drive On Championship at Superstition Mountain last year, ultimately finishing in a tie for 34th after a final-round 75 in Gold Canyon, Ariz., a result she’ll work to improve upon this week as she continues to ride her hot hand.

Thursday, 12:56 p.m. – Celine Boutier/Lydia Ko/Nelly Korda

The last time the LPGA Tour teed it up in Arizona, it was Frenchwoman Celine Boutier who was hoisting a trophy on the final green on Sunday, defeating Georgia Hall in a playoff at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club. It was a win that helped to propel the current Rolex Rankings No. 3 to three other victories in 2023, including her first major title in her home country at The Amundi Evian Championship last July. Now, even though we are at a completely different venue, the 30-year-old will be looking to recreate the magic she found last year in the desert this week at Seville Golf and Country Club. She’s very much in form so far this season, ranking inside the top 20 in strokes gained around the green (13, +0.58), strokes gained tee to green (14, +1.31), strokes gained approach (17, +1.01) and strokes gained total (17, +1.41), according to KPMG Performance Insights. And while she’s losing strokes to the field in putting, Boutier still ranks sixth on the LPGA Tour in putts per green in regulation (1.72) and 21st in putting average (29). This is her fifth start of the 2024 LPGA Tour season, and in her four previous events, she has earned three T16 or better results, including a solo second showing at the HSBC Women’s World Championship.

Lydia Ko will once again be working to track down the 27th and final point she needs for automatic qualification into the LPGA Hall of Fame this week at the Ford Championship presented by KCC. The 26-year-old Kiwi has been on a tear so far in 2024, capturing her 20th career LPGA Tour title at the season-opening Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, finishing runner-up the next week at the LPGA Drive On Championship and then tying for fourth at the Blue Bay LPGA earlier this month. Statistically, Ko has also been lighting it up, currently ranking first in strokes gained total (+2.47) according to KPMG Performance Insights, first in scoring average (69.44) and third in rounds under par (14). She is also 12th in strokes gained approach (+1.14), 14th in strokes gained putting (+0.90) and 15th in strokes gained tee to green (+1.31). The major champion is a player who is more than familiar with desert golf, having competed in multiple Cognizant Founders Cups when they were held at Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix and earning five top-10 finishes in the event before it was moved to New Jersey, two of which were runner-up results that came in 2014 and 2016. So, this week in Gilbert, Ariz., just might be the event that sees Ko finally earn her spot in the LPGA Hall of Fame.

Nelly Korda is arguably the hottest player on the LPGA Tour right now, earning a pair of playoff victories in back-to-back starts at the LPGA Drive On Championship and the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, the latter of which saw her reascend to No. 1 Rolex Rankings for the first time since August 2023. According to KPMG Performance Insights, in her last eight rounds on the LPGA Tour, Korda has made birdie or eagle on 29.2 percent of the holes she’s played, gaining a whopping 3.51 strokes total per round on the field in that span. With her 10th career LPGA Tour victory, she became the 39th different American to earn double-digit victories on the LPGA Tour and is the first player since Karrie Webb in 2011 to win two events in her first three starts of the season. Statistically, she is in the top five in strokes gained total (2, +2.41), strokes gained around the green (2, +0.96) and strokes gained tee to green (3, +2.21) on Tour this year, a deadly triple threat that could see more success from Korda at a gettable Seville Golf and Country Club.

Thursday, 1:07 p.m. – Linn Grant/Hyo Joo Kim/Rose Zhang

Linn Grant is an Arizona State University alum who will bring plenty of experience with her to this week’s Ford Championship presented by KCC, having played a lot of desert golf in her time as a Sun Devil. The Swede is making her sixth start of the 2024 LPGA Tour season in Gilbert, Ariz., and will be looking to continue the form she’s found in recent weeks at Seville Golf and Country Club, coming to the Grand Canyon State fresh off back-to-back T13 finishes at the HSBC Women’s World Championship and FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. This is her first time competing in Arizona since joining the LPGA Tour in 2022, and she will be working to pick up her second career LPGA Tour victory and first since the 2023 Dana Open last summer. Statistically, Grant ranks in the top 10 in one major strokes-gained category, sitting at seventh in strokes gained driving, and is 12th on Tour in average driving distance (269.63 yards).

It's been a quiet start to the year for Hyo Joo Kim, who has earned just one top-10 result in her three starts this season, tying for fifth at the Honda LPGA Thailand in her 2024 debut. She comes to the Ford Championship presented by KCC off a T18 result at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship and will be looking to clean up a few mistakes in Arizona as she works to capture her seventh career LPGA Tour victory in Gilbert. Statistically, the Rolex Rankings No. 9 is second in strokes gained putting on Tour this season (+1.30) and fourth in strokes gained around the green (+0.71), according to KPMG Performance Insights. She is also second in putting average (26.67), fourth in putts per green in regulation (1.67) and eighth in driving accuracy (84.52%) after her three starts in 2024.

Rose Zhang made her return to the LPGA Tour last week at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, tying for 22nd in her first start since finishing T7 at the season-opening Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in January. The 20-year-old briefly stepped away from professional golf to continue her studies at Stanford University after making her first berth in the Tournament of Champions and is working to knock the competitive rust off as the 2024 season starts to ramp up. With just two events under her belt in her first full season competing on Tour, there are still quite a few question marks as to how she statistically stacks up against her Tour counterparts, but according to KPMG Performance Insights, Zhang sits at 13th in strokes gained tee to green (+1.32), 14th in strokes gained total (+1.52) and 15th in strokes gained approach (+1.05), also ranking fourth in driving accuracy (85.71%).
