About Seed Types

Below are the most common seed types on the market. All the listed treatments are completely safe for planting and eating the vegetables grown from them.

Standard Treated

The treatment may be hot water, chemical, or biological, depending on the pathogen involved. Treatment is applied under controlled conditions, in a commonly recognized fashion, at the manufacturer’s recommended rate. 

Treated seed is usually a bright color to help growers easily distinguish it from other seeds.  Seed  treatments typically breakdown in the soil within 10-14 days. 

Some of our seed packages are labeled "DO NOT USE SEED FOR FOOD, FEED OR OIL". The seed itself is not edible, however v egetables and fruit grown from treated seed are most certainly safe and suitable for eating. In fact, many commercial growers use treated seed in their vegetable and fruit production since it improves the performance of the seed and seedling. M uch of the non-organic produce in grocery stores and farmers' markets is grown using treated seed. 

Standard Cruiser Treated

Insect Guard treated corn seed is treated with Cruiser, a protectant with numerous benefits.

1. Protects against flea beetles up to the five true-leaf (V5) stage, lessening transmission of Stewart’s Bacterial Wilt. 2. Minimizes stand loss due to wireworm, seed corn maggot, and other secondary pest damage. 3. Provides contact and systemic protection. 4. Pre-treated seed provides efficient and easy-to-use seedling protection against insect pests. Please note, does not protect against corn borer or earworm.

FarMore® Treated

FarMore® treated  pumpkin , squash , and melon seed provides broad-spectrum protection against soil-borne disease, as well as early season protection against striped cucumber beetles.

FarMore Treatment offers a first line of defense against several key seed and seedling diseases and insects. The industry standard formulation of Cruiser® 70WS insecticide and three fungicides, Apron XL®, Maxim®4FS, and Dynasty® protect seeds prior to, during, and immediately following germination and emergence. Broad Spectrum Disease Protection Proven field performance against: • General damping-off and seed blight • Fusarium spp. • Pythium spp. • Rhizoctonia spp. (including post emergence protection) Excellent Insect Protection  Early-season insect protection can reduce the possibility of insect-vectored diseases. Filmcoated seed has been coated with an inert, food-grade material for easier handling and flowability. When treated seed is filmcoated, the filmcoat helps the treatment adhere to the seed.

Certified Organic Growers: Filmcoat ingredients are not OMRI Listed.

Untreated seed is clean and has not been treated using any chemical, biological, or physical method. While untreated seed can be grown under organic conditions, the seed crop was not grown under Certified Organic Conditions.

Untreated seed is a popular alternative to organic seed. 

Certified Organic Growers: Untreated seed may be allowed in Certified Organic production, provided that a comparable variety is not available in Certified Organic seed. Check with your certifying agency for approval. Pellet ingredients for pelleted untreated seed (product numbers ending in 11-02) are not approved for use in Certified Organic production.

Seed in its “raw” form, comes in from the parent plant, is clean and has not been treated using any chemical, biological, or physical method.

Organic seed is clean and untreated, and it was grown and harvested under Certified Organic conditions. Organic seed is allowed for use in Certified Organic production.

Many home gardeners use organic seed for their vegetable and flower gardens.

Pellet ingredients for pelleted organic seed (product numbers ending in 11-03) are NOP approved for use in Certified Organic production.

Pelleted seed has been coated with an inert material in order to increase the seed size for easier planting.

Small seeds, such as lettuce, are frequently pelleted to increase the size of the seed, allowing growers to have more control over where the seed is planted.

The trick to germinating pelleted seed is to keep the soil moist, but not soggy. The water will either dissolve the coating or crack it open, allowing the seed to sprout. If the pelleted seed doesn’t get enough water, the coating remains intact around the seed, preventing the seed from accessing water or other essential nutrients. To ensure an even higher rate of germination, use a plastic dome or sheet over the top of your trays to better maintain a humid environment. Certified Organic Growers: Pellet ingredients are not OMRI Listed. Pellet ingredients for pelleted untreated seed (product numbers ending in 11-02) are not approved for use in Certified Organic production. Pellet ingredients for pelleted organic seed (product numbers ending in 11-03) are NOP approved for use in Certified Organic production.

Multi-Pelleted

In multi-pelleted seed, the pellet contains more than one seed. One pellet will create multiple plants.

Primed seed has been primed for easier germination, through a physical processes like steam treatment or through chemical treatment.

Certified Organic Growers: Priming processes vary by seed type and supplier. Contact us for more information, and check with your certifier for guidance on using primed seed.

Fibrous “tails” have been removed from seeds for easier handling and flowability. This may be achieved through either a physical or chemical process.

MTO Lettuce

MTO = Mosaic Tolerance Zero. Lettuce has been tested for Lettuce Mosaic Virus and no virus was detected in a sample of 30,000 seeds.

Biotech (Sweet Corn)

What is Biotech Sweet Corn and how is it different from conventional varieties? Biotech sweet corn has been bioengineered to exhibit specific traits that are not found in conventional varieties, including resistance to insect pests and tolerance to specific formulations of herbicide. These traits result in plants with strong inherent protection to insect pests, particularly lepidoptera species, with reduced use of insecticides, as well as greater flexibility in weed management.

How It Works - Insect Protection Proteins derived from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), are effective in controlling lepidopteran insect pests because when consumed these proteins bind to the insect’s mid-gut membrane and create pores that ultimately result in insect death. Biotech sweet corn has been developed to produce these proteins, and effectively resist damage from several insect pests. The exact spectrum of control of these insects depends on the traits of each specific variety.

How It Works - Herbicide Tolerance Broad-spectrum herbicides provide excellent control of weeds in a variety of crop production systems; however, their use is limited in Sweet Corn production due to the risk of crop damage. Certain Biotech Sweet Corn varieties can tolerate the active ingredients of these herbicides by breaking down the chemistries involved into non-effective components. Therefore, chemistries such as glyphosate and glufosinate can be applied for weed control without causing unintended harm to the crop. The exact tolerance to herbicide compounds depends on the traits of each specific variety.

About Lisianthus ( Eustoma spp. ) Flowers

Lisianthus flowers belong to the genus  Eustoma  and flowering plant family Gentianaceae . The showy Eustoma flowers resemble roses and grow on single or branching stems 1 to 3 ft. (0.3 – 1 m) tall. The showy flowers can be single or double blooms and come in pink, purple, and white shades.

Lisianthus is often referred to as the “Texas Bluebell” or the “Prairie Gentian”. It is known for its elegant, rose-like appearance and is widely cultivated for its ornamental value in gardens and floral arrangements.

In Greek, ‘Lisianthus’ is derived from the words ‘lysis,’ meaning dissolution, and ‘anthos,’ which translates to flower. The term can be interpreted as ‘dissolving flower’ or ‘flower of dissolution.’

Lisianthus flowers grow as perennials in warm climates in full sun. In cooler climates, the tall flowers grow as annuals, or you can plant them in containers and overwinter them indoors.

Depending on the regional climate, lisianthus may start blooming in June or July and continue to adorn gardens until September or October. To promote more blossoms, deadheading is recommended.

Lisianthus flowers are typically bell-shaped, gentian-like blooms with ruffled petals. The showy, vibrantly colored flowers grow between 1” and 3” (2.5 – 7.5 cm). The flowers are mainly grown for cut flowers and long vase life which is up to three weeks.

Although lisianthus flowers are grown from seed, they are notoriously difficult to germinate. They require specific growing conditions for seedlings to grow. Lisianthus flowers take five to six months to bloom after planting. Most gardeners buy plugs or transplants to enjoy the blooms in the same season.

Lisianthus flowers are also called prairie gentian, Texas bluebell, or poor man’s rose. Varieties of the  beautiful flowering lisianthus are classified into four distinct groups. Their blooming time is based on light and heat.

Here are the four lisianthus flower groups:

Group 1:  Blooms in early summer in moderate light and heat. This group includes the ‘Echo’ and ‘Doublini’ series.

Group 2: Blooms in summer in high heat and light. This group includes lisianthus flowers in the ‘Excalibur,’ ‘Rosanne 2,’ ‘Voyage 2,’ and ‘Mariachi.’

Group 3: These lisianthus flowers bloom in late summer when it’s cooler but still moderate light and heat. This group includes the lisianthus series ‘Rosita 3,’ ‘Mariachi Grande,’ and ‘Voyage 3.’

Group 4: Lisianthus flowers in Group 4 are typically grown commercially for winter production in warmer climates.

How to Grow Lisianthus

You can plant lisianthus flowers as perennials in USDA zones 8 through 10 in full sun. In other regions, the plant grows as an annual. Lisianthus flowers are tricky to grow. However, by considering the right soil, light, and watering requirements, you can enjoy these spectacular flowers in your front or backyard.

How to grow Lisianthus from Seed?

Growing lisianthus from seed is notoriously challenging. The seeds are so fine they look like dust. To grow Lisianthus from seed, you can start the seeds indoors early to mid-winter in seed trays filled with a peat-based potting medium. Keeping the temperature constant at 70 – 75°F (21 – 24°C) is vital, using grow lights to ensure 16 hours of sunlight daily or successful germination.

You can transplant the seedlings to the ground after they have developed two to three true leaves, ensuring they have sufficient space to grow to their mature height. Plant them in the sunniest part of the garden where the soil is consistently moist but never waterlogged, and ensure they receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. Regularly feed them with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season and provide support if the plants become top-heavy.

Throughout the growth process, be vigilant for common pests like aphids and spider mites, and promptly address any signs of infestation. Additionally, maintain good air circulation to prevent issues such as powdery mildew. With proper care and attention to their specific requirements, lisianthus seeds can develop into vibrant, long-lasting blooms, adding a touch of elegance and color to your garden or floral arrangements.

Alternatively, you can buy plugs from the garden center and plant them outdoors when the danger of frost has passed.

In warm winter climates, you can spread lisianthus seeds on the ground in late summer, and they will bloom the following spring.

Lisianthus flowers thrive in full sun, requiring six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. While they can tolerate partial shade, full sun promotes robust growth, abundant blooms, and lush foliage. Adequate sunlight is essential for developing sturdy stems and vibrant, long-lasting flowers in lisianthus plants.

Heat-loving lisianthus flowers thrive in warm climates in temperatures between 75°F and 85°F (24°C – 30°C). At night, a temperature range of 60°F to 65°F (15.5 – 18°C) is ideal. Once established, the beautiful flowering plants are drought-tolerant.

Lisianthus flowers don’t tolerate high humidity. Therefore, it’s vital to ensure adequate spacing between plants to provide ventilation.

Lisianthus Fertilizer

Fertilize lisianthus with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season every other time you water the plants. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can lead to excessive foliage growth. Potassium-rich fertilizers like kelp meal, potash, and alfalfa help boost flower production throughout the season.

In addition to a balanced NPK fertilizer for flowering plants, it’s vital to ensure the lisianthus flowers get enough calcium. Therefore, if you notice browning leaves on your plants, check the soil for nutrient deficiency, especially calcium. You can amend the soil with a suitable calcium-nitrate fertilizer .

Lisianthus Pruning

Lisianthus flowers are typically grown for cut flower arrangements. Therefore, deadheading lisianthus is good for the plant as you can encourage it to bloom throughout the summer until fall . According to researchers at Cornell University, deadheading is better for lisianthus than pinching the flowers.

Proper pruning helps keep the lisianthus tidy and prevents the flowers from going to seed. You can cut the rose-like flowers at the bottom of the stem and place them in a vase to brighten your home.

Common Pests & Plant Diseases

Common pests affecting lisianthus flowers include aphids, fungus gnats , thrips , and whiteflies . Aphids can distort new growth, while spider mites create stippled leaves. Whiteflies excrete honeydew, leading to sooty mold. The honeydew may also attract more ants to your yard , which will then protect the pests.

The best way to get rid of pests like aphids from lisianthus is to spray the foliage and flowers with insecticidal soap or a neem oil solution . Also, avoid overwatering the flowers to prevent root rot and fungus gnats.

It's early September, and we're in the lisianthus tunnel trial. We're going to take a look at some new varieties.

This is Voyage 2 'First Love'. The Voyage 2 Series is known for these big, ruffly, full petals that look like scoops of ice cream or piles of whipped cream… really fun and beautiful.

This new color is white, with just the lightest cast of blush pink. It's almost like the softest bi-color you could imagine.

Just as a comparison, again, here is the Voyage 2 light pink (ie, 'Pink Improved' ), and then, this new color, Voyage 2 'First Love' . You can see how much softer, lighter it is, with just this palest blush of pink on the edges of the petals.

It's a really beautiful and on-trend color that we're super excited about.
