When I went to Paris, I knew that there was one purchase I really wanted to make: the Longchamp Le Pliage . I read countless Longchamp Le Pliage reviews before deciding to make the plunge—as a broke college freshman, the cost of the bag was a lot of money to spend on a single purchase.

The Longchamp Le Pliage had been on my style wish list for years, and of course, I wanted to get it in France, where Longchamp was founded. That, and purchasing luxury bags in France will save you some serious cash.

Although it had been on my wishlist, I could never bring myself to pay full price in the States. Sure, I’ve purchased handbags more expensive than the Le Pliage, but the thought of buying a handbag that was nylon and shapeless at the price Longchamp sells it for just really drove me crazy.

Really, a nylon tote bag over $150? I’d much rather have leather…or so I thought.

Longchamp Le Pliage Large Review: Is This Travel and Work Tote Bag Worth it?

I’ll admit that I wasn’t quite sold on the Longchamp nylon. My fear with nylon bags is that they won’t hold up as well as my leather bags.

I’ve now purchased several Longchamp Le Pliage tote bags over the years, and while they don’t have quite the durability of my leather bags, they are absolute workhorses for the price and the fact that they’re nylon.

My Le Pliage bags do tend to fray or get holes at the corner, but I also egregiously overstuff them, often carrying a 16″ MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, chargers, extra phone batteries, a water bottle, and a wallet. Basically, more weight than anyone should ever carry on one shoulder (let’s hope my doctor doesn’t read this). My friends, who carry far less in theirs, haven’t had this issue to the extent I have, instead only seeing minor wear on the corners, similar to what you would with a leather bag.

What I especially love about this bag is that the interior is incredibly easy to wipe down and clean. No need to go to a special handbag repair shop, buy any specific cleaning agents, or anything of the such to clean it out.

The leather handles and flap of the Le Pliage elevate the style and also help make it more sturdy. I underestimated the usefulness of the flap over the zipper. When I leave the flap closed and open the zipper to where the flap begins, it’s difficult for even me to get my hand in the bag. It makes me feel a lot better carrying this bag around the city, knowing that it isn’t all that easy for a pickpocket to access. The one drawback I’ve noticed about this bag so far is that lighter colors pick up dirt really easily. To be fair, that’s kind of on me for choosing light colors, knowing that this bag will probably be dragged through hell and back with the amount of traveling and running around that I do (it might be a miracle that they’re all not just black at this point, all things considered).

What Does the Le Pliage Fit?

The Longchamp Large Le Pliage measures 12 ¼”W x 11 ¾”H x 7 ½”D with a 9″ strap drop.

This is definitely my go-to travel bag, the first bag I pick up for running errands, and (if my Le Pliage bags were cleaner) would also be my only choice for the best tote bag for work.

Formerly, I carried my Kate Spade Beau Bag around for everything. While I still love my Beau, it’s heavy, being all leather, and the straps are too short for carrying on my shoulder. The Le Pliage so far has been ideal for travel as it’s big enough to fit not only my 16″ MacBook Pro but also my iPad, a water bottle, a couple of notebooks, a few chargers, and a cosmetic bag or two.

I’m thoroughly convinced that this bag has no real bottom because, for me, it’s like a Mary Poppins bag. It always fits everything, and when it doesn’t, I reach for my expandable Le Pliage instead.

The bag is incredibly lightweight, and the straps are long enough to carry the bag over my shoulder but short enough to wear it on my arm.

Longchamp Large Le Pliage Price

Despite my initial skepticism over the price point, I now happily pay it. This tote bag is relatively affordable in the world of luxury handbags, and it’s the only everyday tote bag I own that I don’t feel guilty about throwing just about anything in.

At $155, the price point feels exceptionally fair for the quality. However, if it’s more than you’re willing to spend, keep an eye out for sales! Although the core colors are rarely discounted, seasonal colors go on great sales online regularly. Nordstrom Rack has the Longchamp Le Pliage Tote Bag on sale for 30% off or more all the time.

I’m really glad I purchased this bag directly from Longchamp and in Paris for two reasons:

1. The Longchamp sales associate informed me that if you buy directly through Longchamp, you get a lifetime warranty. Take it back into any Longchamp store, and they’ll fix it at no charge. I was reassured that if the bag gets holes, they will be fixed for me.

2. With the current price conversion between the Euro and USD, buying not only the Longchamp Le Pliage but luxury goods across the board is less expensive in France. In Paris, this bag came out to approximately $102 USD tax-included, whereas it would be over $155 USD in the United States plus tax.

The Bottom Line

Although initially skeptical of buying a nylon bag over $40, I really couldn’t love this bag more. I want to take it everywhere, and I want it in every. single. color.

The nylon makes this bag incredibly lightweight and easily cleaned, perfect for carrying anywhere your heart desires. Whether you’re running around a new city or schlepping through TSA for the millionth hour, the Longchamp Le Pliage is the bag for you. I honestly mean it when I say that this bag is 100% worth the price, even the price in the United States. Update: It’s been 4 years since I wrote this review, and I now own 4 Le Pliage bags (3 large Le Pliage and one expandable Le Pliage) and can confirm that this bag is still my travel bag of choice. It is just so easy, but light colors do pick up a lot of dirt, and holes form quickly with heavy use (I do definitely overstuff mine, though).

Yes, absolutely! The Longchamp Le Pliage bag is a timeless, classic style that has withstood the test of time. I still constantly see people on planes, trains, and just walking around the city carrying this bag. If it’s any proof, celebrities such as Kate Middleton are still being spotted wearing the Le Pliage.

I recommend avoiding light colors. Speaking from experience, they pick up dirt really easily, and although they are washable, how often do you want to wash your work bag, really? Prioritize purchasing seasonal colors if you’re between options. They often sell out quickly and never return. Core Le Pliage colors, such as navy and black, will always be readily available.

The classic Longchamp Le Pliage is available in three sizes: small, medium, and large (not including the other variations, such as the backpack and expandable weekender). The best size for you really depends on what you’re using the bag for. The small Le Pliage is best if you’re just looking for a new everyday handbag—it’ll fit a small journal but likely won’t fit a full-size notebook, and definitely not a laptop. The medium Le Pliage is a nice size if you need a little more space for everyday essentials such as a water bottle and chargers. The large Le Pliage is the best all-around size, especially if you’re looking for a lightweight work bag or packable travel tote. The large tote bag can fit a laptop, chargers, water bottle, notebooks, and anything else you may need for school, work, or travel.

The medium Longchamp Le Pliage will only fit a 13″ laptop. Even a 13″ laptop is a tight squeeze and may cause the corners of your Longchamp tote bag to wear holes more quickly. The large Longchamp Le Pliage is the best option for carrying a laptop of any size.

Hi Lilian! I’m so sorry that’s happening with your bag. It’s definitely disappointing! I have four of these bags and have never had an issue with white lines, so certainly seems odd. Longchamp provides after sales support for all of their bags. If they determine that the damage was a factory defect, they’ll replace or repair your bag free of charge. If the damage is determined to be caused by you or another third party, they’ll give you an estimate for the repair cost. I recommend reaching out to Longchamp customer service (contact info on their website), to see what they can do for your bag!

Every so often, you come across a piece that surpasses "favorite" status and goes on to become an essential you're unsure how you have ever lived without. For some, it can be a classic watch or sturdy pair of jeans, while for others it might be a skincare savior or a comfortable pair of heels . For me? That life-changing item is a minimal black bag— the iconic Longchamp Le Pliage tote , to be specific.

Back when I was in high school, it felt like every cool girl had this cult status carryall. Yes, it might've been a bit pricey for a teenager, but looking back, I remember feeling like it was almost borderline socially unacceptable to arrive at class without one slinked over your shoulder. So at 16 years old, I embarked on a weeks-long mission trying to convince my parents as to why I needed the bag over your run-of-the-mill knapsack. Full transparency: It didn't take much persuading because my grandma, mom, aunts, and older cousins all owned one and they knew it would serve me well, too.

They weren't wrong. More than 10 years later, I still tote it around with me all the time. Constructed from durable nylon with sleek leather straps, this bag is made to last and withstand the elements. It has a roomy interior that's big enough to fit all your daily essentials and more, as well as a mini pocket to keep your smaller essentials at arm's length. (I usually like to keep my lip balm or MetroCard there.) And no matter how much you stuff inside it, you'll never have to worry about dealing with achy shoulders. It's truly light as air with my work laptop, charger, wallet, and emergency cosmetic case. Longchamp Paris has been in business for nearly 70 years and consistently produces such high-quality, long-lasting leather and nylon goods that it’s been a fan favorite of the “elite” for many years.

The bag comes in a multitude of colors from black to Pepto Bismol pink, and in large and small sizes, but we prefer the large bag. Coming in at about 12” x 11” x 7”, this shoulder tote will comfortably carry all your belongings for a day out on the town, at the coworking office or a couch crashing at a friend’s place. It’s also the perfect size to fit under the seat in front of you on a plane!

One of the best parts about the Le Pliage tote is that in three easy steps it folds down to the size of a large envelope, meaning you can easily stuff it in your other travel bags and take it everywhere. The folding ability of this bag made it the brand’s most successful product and one of the world’s most popular handbags. While the Le Pliage tote bags could be considered the cult bag for any girl on a college campus, the Duchess of Cambridge herself, Kate Middleton, has been known to carry several.

Longchamp Le Pliage Travel Tote Folding

The tote is made from polyamide canvas, which is a fancy way to say nylon with a coated interior, and leather handles. Basically, this means that the tote is durable AF. We’ve pushed this bag to the limits in terms of weight— computers, textbooks, laundry, a case of wine, groceries—whatever your priorities are, this bag will hold ‘em safely on your shoulder, though you may feel it after.

The nylon material is mold and mildew resistant which is great especially when you accidently leave those weird, exotic fruits from the street market sitting in the bag all day in the sun. The coated lining makes it easy to wipe the bag out and prevents odors. In technical terms, polyamide is not water resistant, however, if you get caught in the rain running from car to café, your possessions will be perfectly dry. We don’t recommend submerging the bag in water, but with some common sense for its care, the bag is reasonably water resistant.

About three years into utilizing this bag, there was a devastating accident: the body of the bag was sliced on the saddle of a camel in the Sahara Desert. The hole was about 1 inch wide, just big enough to slip a finger through. The silverlining though is that 8 months later the hole has not grown even a millimeter bigger from when the potentially murderous stabbing occurred. The outer layer of nylon has not frayed either. Talk about a good investment!

A letdown of this bag, although it should not deter you from using it every day, is that there is only one small interior pocket. The pocket will easily fit your essentials, a.k.a. your cell phone, a small wallet, chapstick and your keys. However, they are likely to fall out of the pocket into the cavern of the bag without the luxury of a pocket zipper. The bag is not the best for organizational purposes, especially with a black interior that seems to swallow your belongings into darkness. We wouldn’t consider this a deal breaker though since the tote is not typically the only piece of luggage you’ll carry.

Given that Longchamp is an internationally-known brand, the price tag for this puppy is on the high side at about $145. While this may hurt your wallet initially, four years down the road when you have yet to replace the bag, you’ll be thanking yourself for the purchase.

The bag served as a barrier to break a fall on a cobblestone street and only sustained some dirt and minimal abrasive rub to the nylon.

With everyday use, the corners of the bag have begun to fray, but not to the point of creating a hole. Still extremely durable to carry weight.

Wear and tear is minimal and handles are fully intact without stretching or loose threads.

This bag was taken on a year-long trip and used everyday as the go-to “carry all your crap everywhere you go” bag. The nylon has sustained normal wear and tear with some snags to the outer layer like when your sweater pills on you if you lean on that awesome vintage brick wall for your Instagram post. The corners of the bag have stayed intact. The body of the bag has been sliced open, but the hole has not grown or frayed.

Most of my favorite purchases have come from jumping on a hype bandwagon. I finally caved and bought Allbirds sneakers last year and—surprise!—they're now my favorite shoes. I bought Outdoor Voices' color-block 7/8 leggings after seeing so many stylish women wearing them around New York. I even own that one Amazon coat . Rarely is it that I find something on my own only to realize it's already a cult favorite. But that's exactly the case with my beloved Longchamp Le Pliage tote bag .

It was, first and foremost, a practical purchase. I had just started my freshman year of college, and I wanted to upgrade my JanSport backpack from high school for a more grown-up bag. I did a deep dive on tote bags , which lead me to the Le Pliage, a roomy nylon bag with leather straps and a single side pocket. It fit my books, my laptop, and my makeup case—good. The leather envelope closure, gold buttons, and logo zipper gave the otherwise plain bag the slightest touch of elegance, which was a plus. Here, I thought, was a bag that looked timeless but was purely useful.

Despite all my research, I didn't realize at the time the worldwide fan base Longchamp's Le Pliage had. It was only once I started carrying it that I noticed it everywhere —on my college campus, on the bus, in foreign countries. It felt as though I had entered a secret society, linking me to several thousand tote carriers who were clued in to the magic of this incredibly plain bag.

Since it launched in the nineties, Le Pliage has been one of Longchamp's best-selling bags. In 2017, Business of Fashion reported that the brand sold 11 per minute. A representative for Longchamp confirmed to Glamour that it has sold more than 30 million of Le Pliage totes to date.

Part of its popularity can be attributed to its celebrity fans. Kate Middleton famously carried Longchamp's tote in the early aughts. (She still carries them as the Duchess of Cambridge.) It's been spotted on the shoulders of It girls like Alexa Chung and Kendall Jenner. (The latter acts as the face of the brand .) Even Meghan Markle—long before she was linked to Prince Harry—was photographed with it slung over her shoulder.

There's more to its appeal than A-list sightings. Le Pliage is one of the more accessible bags sold by a designer brand. The small nylon totes start at $125; the large ones can go up to $190. It's stocked in all of the major department stores ( Nordstrom , Bloomingdale's , Neiman Marcus ) and on Amazon . (On all these sites, reviews number in the hundreds and are overwhelmingly positive. It's fairly common for customers to report that they own two or three.)

Visit Longchamp's Instagram and you'll see that widespread appeal in action. For teens and young adults, it's among the affordable yet high-quality bags that are a first designer purchase; for people far into their careers, its size makes it ideal for carting supplies to work or travel necessities on the road.

Akari Furukawa, a college student in Cambridge, Massachusetts, owns three Le Pliage bags, two medium and one large. "I needed a bag that would fit my 12-inch Macbook, book, and agenda, while being sophisticated enough to be carried in formal settings as well as casual everyday use," she says. "I saw this bag in a department store, and I thought it was absolutely perfect for what I need."

Blogger Carly Heitlinger remembers buying her first Le Pliage 10 years ago. She's featured it on her site several times, and still gets questions from her readers about whether they should buy their own. "I think seeing me style Longchamps over the years and having them appear on my blog with various outfits—everything from a work-inspired look to a casual outfit as a tourist in Paris—really shows off its versatility," she says. "They're truly classic bags. And they're functional."

Six years after purchasing my first Le Pliage, I've grown my collection: I now own one in navy (a gift from a family friend) and one in black (a gift to myself after a trip to Paris last fall). It's the bag that carries my laptop to work, and my weekender when I'm heading out of town for a quick trip. The simple, logo-free design matches everything I own. And with its weather-resistant coating, I know it's durable enough to take anywhere.

While I have a handful of other totes in my closet, I reach for Le Pliage more than any other. I think Heitlinger sums up my and so many other's loyalty to the nylon bag best: "Whereas other bags may be seen as classics, there's something timeless and unassuming about a Le Pliage." And that makes it the kind of tote I'll always have in my closet.

I was also looking for a lightweight roomy bag and bought a small 3-in-1 x-travel bag in brown from brics for 47 euros, the design is more comfortable and quality of the leather trims is excellent. They had nice mid-summer sale too. I am actually rather disappointed in my le pliage knock-off, it,s not comfortable to use, i hate the flap and lack of pockets.

LLBean bags you feature are great. I have several. They are strong and roomy while folding flat to nothing. They wash well which I do in the gentle cycle with an extra rinse. Come in great colors too!

I was given a knockoff of the Longchamps tote and like it except for the lack of internal pockets. After reading a post on Pinterest, got a table runner and cut it to fit around the internal space, sewed the ends together and turned up enough to fit various bits and pieces and sewed pockets for: kindle, sunglasses, small make up bag, camera, water bottle. Works very well and I made another one for the friend who gave me the bag – makes all the difference to using it for an organised day out, or in my case, my carry on bag.
