LOS ANGLES (AP) — Grace Kim shot a 7-under 64 at Wilshire Country Club to take the first-round lead Thursday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship.

Playing in the morning session, the 23-year-old Australian capped her bogey-free round with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 18th.

“Well, I chunked my tee shot on the last hole 20 meters short and then I chipped it in it,” Kim said. “I think that’s pretty cool, in front of everyone.”

Maja Stark of Sweden, Sei Young Kim of South Korea and Chanettee Wannasaen of Thailand were a stroke back at 65. Stark finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda.

“I was so tired when I got here,” Stark said. “I barely been practicing. Just did a little bit of what I needed to do. I feel like it’s kind of similar anyway because there are just some pins that you can’t go for just like at Chevron.”

Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her fifth victory in a row.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron, shooting 76-72.

“If I was to compare my round today to last week, I really focused on just not having too much in my mind,” she said. “I think I over-thought a lot of things through my first and second round last week and struggled a little bit mentally.”

Sei Young Kim had four straight birdies on Nos. 12-15 in her afternoon round. She won the last of her 12 LPGA Tour titles in 2020.

Auston Kim, Haeran Ryu and Nataliya Guseva shot 66, and defending champion Hannah Green matched Amy Yang and Bianca Pagdanganan at 67.

PGA Tour’s Scottie Scheffler or LPGA’s Nelly Korda? Who you got?

Let’s take a deeper look at Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler as they have the LPGA and PGA Tour in a chokehold.

Nelly Korda, Scottie Scheffler, LPGA Tour, PGA Tour

Which World No. 1 golfer would you take: the LPGA Tour’s Nelly Korda or the PGA Tour’s Scottie Scheffler ?

Scheffler is coming off his fourth win of the season and 10th career victory, earning Tiger Woods comparisons . As for Korda, she has won five straight and earned her 13th career trophy. She became the first player since Annika Sorenstam in 2005 to win five tournaments in a row, and only the third ever woman.

They both look unbeatable as they continue to destroy whoever goes up against them.

If you needed to complete your foursome, which player are you asking to join?

We took a look at their numbers before making our choice.

Korda has six starts this season and has won five, meaning she has won 83 percent of the time.

Scheffler has won four of his five last starts, including one runner-up finish at the Houston Open. He has played in 10 events this season and has won 40 percent of his starts.

The former Texas Longhorn has a 67.6 scoring average, while Korda’s is 69.22.

Her driving accuracy is 74.22 percent, and she hits 75.85 percent greens in regulation. Scottie hits 73.54 percent of his fairways and 74.55 percent of the greens.

He averages 28.19 putts a round, while she is at 29.57.

Their numbers are similar in so many statistical categories.

So, which player are you taking? Right now, it would be hard to select either because they will both perform.

Korda has won five straight on different types of golf courses in different weather conditions, so her ability to adapt is why she would be my selection.

Nelly Korda is putting her bid for a historic sixth straight victory on hold.

The LGPA golfer officially withdrew Monday from the JM Eagle LA Championship, which begins Thursday at Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles. Korda tied Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam with her fifth straight win Sunday at the Chevron Championship near Houston, the year’s first major.

“It was not an easy decision,” Korda said in a statement posted on the LPGA Tour website. “After the unbelievable week at The Chevron and grinding through the mental and physical challenges of four events in the past five weeks, I am definitely feeling exhausted. With so much still to come throughout 2024, I feel I need to listen to my body and get some rest, so I can be ready for the remainder of the season.”

The 25-year-old from Florida didn’t indicate when she’ll compete next. After this week’s stop in Los Angeles, the Cognizant Founders Cup in New Jersey is May 9-12. The next major is the U.S. Women’s Open in Pennsylvania from May 30-June 2.
