Skopelos Mamma Mia Tour

  • 9.20 / 10 5 reviews | 132 travellers The tour is done by mini bus and the driver is very competent. We toured the most emblematic places of the film with very good and extensive explanations from our guide. We stopped at two beaches to swim and, on the second, we ate at a beautiful restaurant with quality food. A highly recommended activity. 10 Javier Ayala

Mamma Mia, here we go again ... If you've always dreamed of visiting the island where Mamma Mia was filmed , this tour of Skopelos is calling your name!

Staircase leading to the Chapel of Agios Ioannis

How many times have you seen the film  Mamma Mia ? Ever wondered where Donna Sheridan and her daughter Sophie live? If your dream is to visit the fictional island of Kalokeri, just come to Dolphin of Skopelos at the indicated time and we'll start our tour through the sets of Mamma Mia !

The Greek island of Skopelos quickly rose to fame after appearing on the big screen as Kalokeri, a dreamy oasis in the Aegean Sea and setting of the musical starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. Believe it or not, this place actually exists, and we're about to discover it!

First, we'll head to the Chapel of Agios Ioannis , also known as the Chapel of St. John , the church where the wedding in the film takes place. We'll climb its 199 steps to reach the top, which boasts breathtaking views of the island and the sea. Of course, we'll reveal some of the most peculiar anecdotes about the filming of the popular musical.

Afterward, we'll visit Kastani Beach , hands down one of Skopelos' most beautiful beaches. Starring the contrast between the intense turquoise blue of the sea and the green of its pine forests, this cove will take you directly to the paradise captured in Mamma Mia . Did you know that the longest scene of the film was shot here? While we're here, you'll have time to go for a refreshing swim and feel just like Sophie in the calm Greek waters.

To complete our route through Skopelos, we'll head to the beach of Agnontas , one of the most important ports on the island. In addition to reviewing the movie scene filmed in this port, you'll have free time to swim and have lunch in a local restaurant.

Finally, we'll return to the starting point to conclude the Mamma Mia tour after a total of 6hours of sightseeing.

Skopelos Mamma mia Grrece family tour

The Mamma Mia Greece Family Tour

Are you or any of your family members a Mamma Mia fan ? If you ever caught yourself daydreaming of the beautiful island of Kalokairi or humming lyrics of the Mamma Mia songs, then, it’s time to live the real ‘Mamma Mia’ family experience on the majestic island of Skopelos .

Where is the Kalokairi island in Greece? How can I visit it with my family?

Although there is no Greek island called “Kalokairi” (“summer” in Greek), the locations where the popular musical was filmed, are more than real. The primary location of Mamma Mia is on Skopelos, one of the most beautiful islands of the Greek Sporades in the northwest Aegean Sea.

Join our Mamma Mia Family Greece Tour and spend a memorable day with the kids while visiting all the spots of Skopelos featured in the musical.

Your Private Mamma Mia Family Tour will start with a relaxed drive across the beautiful west coast of Skopelos until you reach the famous chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri , the so-called Mamma Mia wedding church. Agios Ioannis is the place where Donna sings to Sam ‘The Winner Takes It All’.

This picturesque small chapel is built on the top of a rock offering amazing views of the Aegean Sea. Although you will need to climb 199 steps to reach the chapel, we feel that it’s worth the effort. Besides the stunning views from the top, visiting Agios Ioannis will also give you a real taste of the Mamma Mia carefree atmosphere.

Skopelos beach with rocks Greece

After visiting the chapel where Sophie wants to get married, you will head towards the gorgeous beach of Kastani . Before reaching Kastani beach you will take a short stop at an olive press close to Glossa Village . There, you and the kids will learn some interesting facts about the production of Skopelos’ virgin olive oil.

A beautiful shot of the village of Glossa Mamma Mia Skopelos

As soon as you reach Kastani beach, both you and the kids will be amazed by the breathtaking natural scenery and its crystal-clear waters. From the very first moment you step on Kastani, you will sense why the Mamma Mia production team chose this beach as one of the major filming spots of the movie.

After you enjoy a rejuvenating family swim and listen to interesting in-depth information about the several Mamma Mia! scenes that took place on Kastani beach, you can relax with the kids at the cosy beach bar and enjoy a refreshing drink while gazing at the unique beauty around you.

Kastani Beach on Skopelos Mamma Mia DP

Your next stop will be the picturesque port of Agnontas on the south part of the island. Nestled in a beautiful bay, Agnontas took its name from the Olympic runner Agnon. Both you and the kids can enjoy a swim in the calm, crystal-clear waters of Agnontas.

You may also enjoy delicious fresh fish dishes at one of the small taverns located on the beach. Choose a table right by the water and relax under the shade of the pine trees that touch the sea. The feeling is magnificent.

You will also visit the beach of Panormos, where you will see the impressive lush landscape with its crystal clear waters. The cast and crew stayed here during the filming of the movie.

The port in Agnontas of Skopelos DP Mamma Mia

On your way back to Skopelos town, you will gaze from a distance the cape of Amarandos , the so-called three trees , due to the three pine trees that stand tall at the end of a white rocky gulf, facing the sea.

Join our Mamma Mia Family tour, feel the carefree lifestyle featured in the movie and collect family memories that will last forever.

with the family(parents – 3 childs(16-17-20) we are planning to visit Greece this summmer. This mamma mia tour is something we would like to do. We are doing a small round trip. The idea is to do this tour when we are in Athens. Is the starting point Skiathos/skopelos or is volos also possible. At what time does the tour starts? What is the price for this tour?

Thanks, WIm.

Dear Wim, hank you for your message. Most of the Mamma Mia locations are in Skopelos and in order for you to enjoy this tour is to start from either Skiathos or Skopelos (as opposed to Athens). The Sporades is lovely and I highly recommend that you spend a few days there! I am afraid it will be exhausting and stressful as a day rip from Athens. All the best, Katerina

Super (Trooper) Day Out On The Mamma Mia Tour In Skopelos!

Photo of author

Jayne Gorman

June 6, 2017

Let me start by saying it doesn’t matter if you haven’t seen the Mamma Mia movie. You probably have seen as it was a massive box office hit starring the likes of Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan singing ABBA hits on a Greek Island and really what not’s to like about that? But if you haven’t ( you’re missing out! ) I promise you will still enjoy the Mamma Mia tour of Skopelos, which pairs visits to the film locations with movie gossip, Skopelos tips and delicious Greek cuisine.

Super (Trooper) Day In Skopelos – Mamma Mia Tour Is Heaps Of Fun

Luckily for me ( whose memory is hazy at best ) The Mamma Mia Highlights Tour run by Dolphin of Skopelos starts with a little refresher. Highlights from the movie are played on the coach screen as you make your way from the port to the first stop of the day, Ag.Ioannis Chapel. Vicky ( my travel blogging, karaoke-loving companion ) and I keenly claimed front seats in order to catch sight of Dominic Cooper’s abs ( *cough* I mean, the scenery ) and also because I’ll admit I was a little bit fearful about the road ahead of us.

Ag.Ioannis is known as the Mamma Mia Chapel

You see, we had tried to visit the Mamma Mia chapel on our own steam the previous day. We’d hired a jeep to explore the island and after spotting the signs to the chapel figured we’d give it a shot. Not the brightest idea. The road to the famous chapel on the rock is a twisting beast with blind corners, narrow bends and steep drops galore. We got 9/10 th of the way there before poor Vicky who had been tackling those turns like a trooper suggested we turn back and I most certainly didn’t blame her. The coach driver, however, knows the turns like the back of his hand. He honks his way around every bend and does some of the hairier reversing when us passengers are off the coach checking out the sights. ( *Round of applause for Dimitris* )

mamma mia tour in skopelos

After just a few moments of bated breath we arrived at the chapel and then proceeded to get out of breath climbing the 200-odd steps to the top. Wedding bookings have gone up since Meryl and co shot their Hollywood version here but they are still priced at a reasonable 200 euros – I suspect because you’d need at least 10x that to pay your guests to come up with you!

Despite the hairy journey ( and the fact that Skopelos had an unprecedented cloudy 30 mins during or visit ) this was probably the highlight of the tour for me. The combination of lonesome craggy rock, emerald water and the fact that man somehow made a chapel up there just fills you with wonder.

mamma mia tour in skopelos

Our next stop was at an olive oil press, which as you can imagine has nothing to do with the movie but is something they are proud of in Skopelos. I’ll admit I didn’t fully follow the talk on the olive oil making process but I did enjoy the tasters at the end and Vicky and I were among the first to queue up and buy a bottle to take home.

Mamma Mia highlights tour with Dolphin of Skopelos

After that you head to Kastani, known as the Mamma Mia beach as it’s where some of the main songs were shot including the steamy Lay All Your Love On Me. Vicky gamely re-enacted the song for my Insta Story ( if you missed it, you missed out! ) before we flopped onto a sun lounger and I enjoyed my umpteenth frappe of the holiday.

Kastani is known as the Mamma Mia beach

You’re giving an hour or so here to swim ( or use the free wifi if you’re a wimpy blogger who doesn’t like cold water ) before heading to the small fishing port of Agnontas for lunch.

Mamma Mia highlights tour with Dolphin of Skopelos

I can see why the folk at Dolphin choose Agnontas Mouria for the lunch stop. It’s a quintessential Greek Taverna where you can eat directly on the waterfront, watching boats bob on the water and cats stretch out in the sun. The food ( I ordered tzatziki and moussaka – standard! ) was sublime but it’s the kindly nature of the staff that makes you want to come back and linger longer.

On the final leg of the trip Christos our guide and the amiable driver Dimitris gave us a Skopelos orientation inter-woven with tidbits of movie gossip. My favourite story of the day involved Colin Firth who I always thought was very stuffy but apparently enjoyed a lot of ouzo on the last day of filming and ended the night shoe-less. ( Maybe he is my kind of guy after-all! ) As we were sitting near the front Christos did offer Vicky and I the microphone for a little sing-a-long but for the sake of our fellow passengers, the coach windows and every living thing within a 30 mile radius we declined. On that occasion anyway..

I travelled to Greece with Olympic Holidays who are one of the UK’s leading specialists for holidays to the Greek Islands – I’ve booked my Greek holidays with them for many years. Find out more about holidays to Skopelos .

The Mamma Mia Highlights Tour runs every Wednesday and Sunday and is priced at 30 Euros per person (lunch is extra). Speak to your resort rep to make a booking.

My trip to Greece was complimentary but all opinions and bad singing are my own, as always. More information on island hopping between Skopelos, Alonissos and Skiathos with Olympic Holidays will be coming to the blog shortly.

I love Mamma Mia, I have seen the play in London, I have watched the movie…I love all the ABBA songs. A visit to Skopelos is definitely something I would love to do. This tour sounds like great fun

A 'Mamma Mia' Tour Of Skopelos, Greece

Kastani Beach

The 2008 romantic comedy musical starring Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep and featuring ABBA songs was a bit hit. Even today, tourists visiting the island are interested in visiting the spots they admire in the Mamma Mia movie . Enjoy this small guide to the various locations used for filming this rom-com, from Skopelos island – the sole ‘location’ in the film’s story – to Skiathos and Damouhari, in the Pelion.

Kastani beach.

Kastani beach is one of the best on Skopelos and is primarily known for its tranquility and beauty, with its turquoise waters and lush and verdant surroundings. Both the wooden pier and the bar in the movie do not exist anymore though the beach now has a proper beach establishment.

Glisteri was used for basic backgrounds during the movie – it was here that Sophie read her mother’s diary to her friends, for example. The small peninsula near the beach Glisteri was the point where Sophie left for her wedding ceremony.

Church In Agios Ioannis In Kastri

The stunning outdoor scenes of the wedding were filmed in the church of Agios Ioannis Sto Kastri in Skopelos while the interior scenes were actually shot at Agion Panton, a tiny church located in front of Panagitsa tou Pirgou at the edge of Skopelos harbor. To reach the Agios Ioannis church, visitors must climb 100 stone-carved steps, but once there, the view is magnificent.

Amarantos, Milia & Agnontas

Milia Beach – although not a filming location per se – features in the movie as well as the small Dahsia islet in the background. The pretty harbour of Agnontas was the place where the boat in ‘Money Money Money’ was moored and Amarantos definitely merits a visit, especially for sunset.

How To Get There?

Now that you know the various filming locations on Skopelos, all you have to go is get there. This stunning pine-covered island is easily accessible by ferry (4-5 hours) and hydrofoil (2 hours) from Volos harbour. There are some sea connections from Agios Konstantinos, near Athens and from Kymi in Evia. But Skopelos is 45 minutes by hydrofoil and 70 minutes by ferry from Skiathos, and daily connected to Athens by plane.

ALL Mamma Mia Filming Locations on Skopelos & Skiathos

mamma mia tour in skopelos

Oh, Greece! If someone asks me about one of my favorite countries, my vote will most likely go to this jewel in Southeast Europe.

I’ve been there a total of five times, exploring islands like Santorini, Tinos , Thassos , Corfu, etc. Nevertheless, every year I crave to discover more of this country’s fascinating beauty.

It’s not only an attractive country for me, but every year people from all around the world come to enjoy stress-free and relaxed holidays.

Greece’s stunning nature and slow, laidback lifestyle are also very popular with filmmakers .

The list of movies filmed here is long, including ‘The Bourne Identity’ , ‘Before Midnight’ and ‘Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’ .

However, the most famous one is by no doubt the musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ released in 2008. It was filmed on the two Greek islands Skopelos and Skiathos , both parts of the Northern Sporades island group.

Mamma Mia Filming Locations

As a huge fan of this feel-good movie – I’ve seen it at least ten times – visiting the Mamma Mia filming locations in Greece has been on my bucket list since the first time I watched it.

This year it was finally time for me to pack my bags, catch the ferry to Kalokairi, and stay at the famous Villa Donna!

… or at least I pretended to do that. 😉

If you love the movie as much as I do, Skopelos and Skiathos are the best Greek islands to visit !

To help you plan your perfect trip there, I created this guide to all Mamma Mia filming locations on both islands. Make sure to keep it handy for the time you go there to not miss any of the top places!

Mamma Mia Filming Locations on Skopelos

Most parts of the movie, particularly the outdoor scenes, were shot on the unspoiled island of Skopelos .

Skopelos Church

Ever since the film crew came here in 2007 Skopelos has been known as “The Mamma Mia Island”.

If you’re lucky you can find photos of cast members dining out in some bars and restaurants or even meet locals who got to chat with the actors back then!

But for now, let’s see which wonderful places on Skopelos represent the island Kalokairi in the movie!

If you don’t want to visit all the locations by yourself, you can book an organized Mamma Mia Island Tour around Skopelos.

Glysteri Beach

Remember the scene when Donna picks up her two friends Tanya and Rosie and they all make their way up to Villa Donna in a jeep? It was filmed amongst the olive groves above Glysteri Beach on the north side of Skopelos.

Moreover, the olive groves were also used for other general scenes, such as the one where Sophie sets off from Villa Donna for her wedding on a donkey.

Glysteri Beach Skopelos

Another scene shot at Glysteri Beach is the one where Sophie and her three fathers jump off the rocks after their sailing trip.

The beach itself is rather small but comes with crystal clear water , perfect for snorkeling.

It’s not far from Skopelos Town and can be easily reached by car, quad, or motorbike. There’s a large parking area so don’t worry about finding a place to park your vehicle.

Glysteri Beach is well-organized featuring a busy beach cafe , many sunbeds to rent, and feel-good music in the summer.

So if you’re looking for a quiet secluded beach with few people, this beach is probably not the best choice.

Mamma Mia Filming Locations in Greece

Kastani Beach

Amongst all Mamma Mia filming locations, Glysteri isn’t the only beach shown in the movie.

Kastani Beach, just 18 km located from Skopelos Town, is a small bay of white sand surrounded by lush vegetation.

It’s rather difficult to access, with a very steep and bumpy road leading there but with enough parking lots. Nevertheless, this doesn’t prevent locals and tourists from flocking to one of the loveliest beaches on Skopelos.

Although the beach had been famous before, it gained even more attention after it was featured in the scene of Mamma Mia where Sophie and Sky sing ‘Lay All Your Love on Me’ while lolling around on the white sand.

Another iconic scene filmed here is when a friend of Sky feels attracted to Donna’s much older friend Tanya who completely rejects him while singing and dancing to ‘Does Your Mother Know’.

Both, the small pier and the beach bar in these two scenes were built only for the movie. So don’t wonder if you can’t spot either of them. Instead, you’ll find rows of sunbeds and a hip beach café as well as watersports rentals.

If you don’t have a rental car, accessing the beach may be kinda difficult, so booking a guided Mamma Mia tour is advantageous.

Chapel of Agios Ioannis

Undoubtedly, all Mamma Mia filming locations on Skopelos are truly breathtaking and worth visiting.

However, the star among all is the tiny chapel of Agios Ioannis, the location where Sophie’s and Sky’s wedding takes place .

Mamma Mia Filming Locations

Situated on top of a rock overlooking the ocean, the chapel can be reached by climbing more than 200 narrow steps. As a reward, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the rugged coastline and the beach below.

The beach is gorgeous but a couple of times a day it gets packed when excursion boats dock there. Usually, they leave after 1-1.5 hours , then you’ll have the beach almost to yourself again.

Agios Ioannis Skopelos

When you enter the chapel, you’ll quickly realize it’s way too small to fit all the wedding guests you see in the movie. Therefore they built a larger version of it in the Pinewood Studios, using another church on Skopelos as a model.

The chapel is also used as the background in the ‘The Winner Takes it All’ scene with Donna and her former lover Sam who declares he still loves her.

Afterward, Donna runs up the steps to join the wedding but before, she stops and turns around in the doorway at the top to look back at Sam.

Agios Ioannis Chapel Skopelos

Amarandos Cove

For the next scenic filming spot, we have to go back all the way down to the south side of Skopelos.

There, located along a rocky road, you find the breathtaking coastline of Amarandos, consisting of small islands, rocky coves , and mesmerizing turquoise water.

This snorkeling paradise is not easy to find.

When you travel through Agnontas, keep an eye open for a barely readable sign saying Amarandos on the right side of the road. Whereas if you come from the east, the sign will be to your left.

If you have a rental car, I recommend you park the car next to the main road and then walk the rest of the way. It only takes around 20 minutes and it’s much better than driving your car on this very bumpy and uneven road.

Amarandos Cove

While walking through the pine forest, you may get the feeling of being part of the Mamma Mia movie yourself.

That’s because the surroundings at Cape Amarandos were used for the scene where Sophie runs through the pines singing ‘Honey, Honey’ while she reads parts of her mother’s diary.

Mamma Mia Filming Locations Skopelos

Amarandos Cove was also used as the location for one of my absolute favorite scenes in the entire movie. The idyllic sailing scenes of Sophie and her three potential fathers to the song ‘Our Last Summer’ were shot here as well.

If you look closely, you’ll spot the two pines on a small peninsula that are featured in Mamma Mia.

This exact place has become the symbol of Skopelos and is one of the most photographed landmarks on the island and among the most famous natural landmarks in Greece.

Amarandos Cove

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alina Schweiger (@world.of.lina)

Once you spent enough time enjoying the serene beauty of Amarandos Cove, plan a stop in Agnontas.

It was the picturesque setting in Agnontas that inspired the filmmakers to create the fantasy scene in which Donna sings ‘Money, Money, Money’ and imagines being rich.

The fishing village itself is relatively small with just a few taverns and a beach visited mainly by locals. It’s a nice place to have lunch though or watch the sunset at the coves nearby.

Although most of the Mamma Mia filming locations can be found on Skopelos, it’s not wrong to include Skiathos on your trip as well.

Compared to its quiet and calm neighboring island, Skiathos is livelier with a bustling main town and an international airport.

Old Port of Skiathos

It’s the old port of Skiathos that you see in the scene where Sam and Harry try to catch the ferry to Kalokairi , just to see it take off without them.

Fortunately, Sophie’s third potential father Bill invites both to join him on his sailboat and start the journey together.

Old Port Skiathos Town

Moreover, the opening scene where Sophie sings ‘I have a dream’ also includes views over the old town rooftops and the Agios Nikolaos Church and Clock Tower.

OMG Lina, this is dreamy! I am have been dreaming about going to Greece for years now, and next year I need to go for sure. This post is stunning and full of amazing ideas and recommendations, and the pictures are just breathtaking. Thanks so much for sharing it and for the inspiration.

Greece is seriously my favorite country in Europe, there’s so much to see and the people are the best! I hope you can go there next year 🙂

Oh man, this makes me even more excited for my trip to Greece next year – I’m so adding Skopelos & Skiathos to my list of destinations to see.

Both islands are amazing! You’ll love it there 🙂

I absolutely love this guide! I love these movies and have wanted to do a Mamma Mia tour ever since the first movie came out. Definitely saving this for my future trip!

Thanks Krista! Mamma Mia is one of my absolur favorite movies so seeing all the places in real was just an epic experience 🙂

What a fabulous concept for a blog post! I absolutely adore all of your pictures and would love to visit all of these filming locations. Thank you for the inspiration!

Thanks Elena 🙂 I’m happy to hear this!

Greece was the very first country I travelled to and I have been back a couple of times since. I live both the Mama Mia movies and have the DVDs. They are such feel good movies and have watched them several times. I enjoyed reading this post. It brought all the memories of the movies back for me. I can see I will have to go back to Greece and visit Skopelos and Skiathos.

I feel the same about the movies! I’ve seen each at least 5 times already and could watch them again and again. Greece is just such a stunning country 🙂

Hi Lina I am on Skiathos right now and after visiting the Old Harbour a couple times, I took a day trip to Skopelos yesterday to watch all the other beutiful spots. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to Glysteri Beach and Agnontas, as I only had that one day, but Amarantos with its pines and the Agios Ioannis chapel were breathtaking. Those spots are absolutely adorable and even my boyfriend, who is not a big Mamma Mia fan (yet) fell in love with those places. Another lucky circumstance is that there were only very few people, so we could enjoy our trip even more. Thanks to your reports, we were able to organise our trip very well and efficiently without getting in a hurry. Kastani beach was very crowdy (as you wrote), so it was nice, but it wasn’t that magical as the other locations. Thanks for your tips an greetings from Skiathos!

Hey Lena, it’s good to hear you’re enjoying your time on Skiathos! It’s a wonderful island 🙂 I’m also happy to hear you could use this post for planning!

mamma mia – this is amazing! <3 this is one of my favorite movies so getting to experience some of the BEAUTIFUL filming locations in person would be a dream!! did you have a favorite?!

Hehe saaaame I just LOVE it so much! And yes, Amarandos Cove was just incredible 🙂

Oh wow, I absolutely LOVE all these locations. I can’t believe how beautiful Greece is.

Yeah it’s an amazing country!

Skopelos & Skiathos look stunning! I can’t wait to explore Greece and must add these gorgeous islands to my itinerary! Thanks for sharing!

They’re definitely worth visiting 🙂

I haven’t seen Mamma Mia, but that wouldn’t stop me from wanting to see this amazing looking place. So beautiful. Those beaches look pristine, and the water is so blue. I’ve wanted to visit Greece for a long time

Oh it’s my favorite movie! You should really watch it 🙂

Wow! As a HUGE Mamma Mia! fan, I absolutely adored this post. Greece is so beautiful too – it’s my most visited country ever, and no doubt I will keep going back. Lovely post with stunning pictures!

Hehe I feel you! It’s the same for me 😉 Thanks Elaine!

I love Mamma Mia & Greece but have never been to Skopelos. Am already planning a return trip so you have inspired me to add this island to the itinerary!

You’ll enjoy your time there!

Great post. Ive not seen the film but the locations looks gorgeous!

Oh it’s such a fun & happy movie!

Great post! I love Mamma Mia and have always wanted to visit the different locations. Definitely saving this for when I finally get to go to make my trip a whole lot easier!

You’ll love all of them!

I always enjoy seeing filming locations. It would be so fun to watch Mamma Mia again and then go to all these spots. I bet the locals love telling stories about the filming and meeting the actors!

Haha oh yes they really do! It’s definitely fun to explore all the places 🙂

Lina, I absolutely love this post! I adore Mamma Mia, and I’ve been dying to visit ever since watching Mamma Mia 2, haha. I’ll have to add Skopelos & Skiathos to my Greek bucket list. Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂

I’m very happy to here this Brittany 🙂 The two islands are gorgeous, you’d really love it there!

Cool all those filming locations, I would visit the locations already without them being from Mamma Mia.

Yes the places are so beautiful!

Hey Lina, do you have all the spots on map please? It helps me a lot if yes! Thanks

Hey John, I just added a map with all the filming locations on Skopelos to the post! 🙂

Skiathos: Taking The Mamma Mia Boat Trip with Poseidon

Beautiful buildings in Skiathos Old Port

As an unapologetic fan of both Mamma Mia! films, I knew that a boat trip was on the cards when I booked my trip to Skiathos.

Skiathos Town is one of the filming locations for the first film – although it’s a little bit blink-and-you’ll-miss-it . A lot of the film was actually filmed in Pinewood Studios in London.

But there are a few more filming locations over on neighbouring island Skopelos – a mere hour away. Thankfully there are several Mamma Mia! themed boat trips available from Skiathos Town which will take you there.

I choose to go with Poseidon as it’s the only boat from Skiathos which stops at right by Agios Ioannis, the clifftop chapel made famous as the location of Sophie’s wedding at the end of the first film (if you take a different boat you’ll need to get an expensive taxi if you want to walk up to the chapel).

Itineraries may change according to the weather and the schedule, but here’s what we got up to when we set sail for the imaginary island of Kalokairi…

Skiathos Old Port harbour

The boat leaves from the Old Port in Skiathos Town. This is actually one of the film locations – it’s where Sam and Harry arrive at the port and miss the ferry to Kalokairi (which is not a real island). Watch the film and you’ll briefly spy the blue-shuttered windows pictured above.

The boat left at 10 and I was advised to board at 9:30am to get a good spot on deck. I recommend going earlier though as there were plenty of people already on board by the time I got there (and this was early in the season so it wasn’t completely full).

FIRST STOP – MAMMA MIA CHURCH

The first stop is the best for Mamma Mia lovers. It took about 1 hour in good weather to reach Agios Ioannis (otherwise known as the Mamma Mia! church) from Skiathos Town.

Of course, the soundtrack is played as soon as you leave the harbour, and it was perfectly timed so that The Winner Takes It All was playing as we rounded the rocky cliff that is home to the Agios Ioannis chapel.

Cheesy but amazing .

Sadly the boat never quite comes alive with music a la Dancing Queen, though a few of us murmur along quite tunelessly.

The boat (pictured below) anchors at the beach next to the chapel. I’d say it was a 10-15 minute steep uphill walk. The path is fairly uneven and there were a few people on our trip who struggled, but most were fine. But it’s worth the effort for the view.

If you don’t want to walk up you can relax on the beach itself, which is beautiful – the water is an incredible shade of blue. There a small snack bar nearby too.

The chapel in real life is pretty tiny! You certainly couldn’t fit a wedding contingent in here.

The interior is very different from the one the film, which was a studio set based on the interior of Panagitsa tou Pirgou church in Skopelos Town.

Poseidon boat on Mamma Mia tour, anchored at Agios Ioannis beach

SECOND STOP – SKOPELOS TOWN

Next the boat motored along the coast, past Amarantos (where Sophie reads Donna’s diary at the start of the film) and Glysteri (where they jump from the rocks in Our Last Summer) towards Skopelos Town for a lunch stop.

Skopelos Town was a delightful surprise.

There are no Mamma Mia locations in Skopelos Town itself.  But it doesn’t matter because I can tell you – Skopelos Town has vibes .

It’s a gorgeous harbour with very chilled (if slightly chi-chi) atmosphere. I spied a brewery that plays jazz, immaculate streets with pretty coloured balconies, great shopping, homemade ice-cream, and a juice bar. Is this where the hipsters come in the summer?

I had a large plate of tomatokeftedes with a red pepper and cheese dip and a Fix whilst watching the ferries and plotting a return trip.

In fact, I almost did a Sophie and stayed.

jewellery shop in Skopelos Town

THIRD STOP – BEACH

The third stop included on the tour depends on the day and also the weather.

The main Mamma Mia beach on Skopelos is Kastani. This is the where Lay All Your Love On Me and Does Your Mother Know were filmed. The jetty and beach bar no longer exist but you can still do your best Amanda Seyfried and writhe around on the beach in your swimsuit. Just be aware that the beach is pebbly rather than sandy.

We stopped at Milia, which is the next beach along the coast. It’s equally beautiful with incredible colours (particularly when the sun shines, or so I’m told as it was unfortunately forecast by the time we got there).

The beach itself at Milia wasn’t used as a location – possibly some shots were filmed between Milia and the nearby Dhasia islet but I’ve not managed to confirm this. I may be grasping at straws.

Whilst writing up this post I came across these amazing behind-the-scenes photos of filming on Skopelos which give you a great idea of how the scenery is used.

Milia Beach on Skopelos

And that wrapped up the boat tour, and we headed back to Skiathos Town in time for a sundowner at Bourtzi.

All in all, it’s an enjoyable and relaxing day- as long as you don’t have expectations of visiting all the locations or of everything looking the same as in the film. I can also imagine it’s considerably less relaxing in July and August when the boats are completely packed.

The locations are all worth a visit in their own right, and non-Mamma Mia! lovers will be pleased to note that the soundtrack is only played once. The poor staff must be completely sick of it.

Fans should note that throughout the summer there’s also frequent showings of the first film at the open-air cinema on the Bourtzi.

Thankfully this is where the cheese ends. The only other reference I saw to the films was an ice-cream parlour named after the film, and a few places called Sophie’s Apartments (or similar).

Mamma Mia Film Locations in Greece – Skopelos, Skiathos and Pelion

The hit movie Mamma Mia had us singing along to those catchy Abba songs and loving the feel-good Greek locations. If you’re a fan you may be wondering “where was Mamma Mia filmed?” We visited most of the Mamma Mia film locations in Skopelos and the nearby Pelion peninsula in Greece and had fun re-living moments from the movie.

Mamma Mia film locations - Agios Ioannis Mama Mia chapel, Skopelos Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

A starring role went to the picturesque chapel of Agios Ioannis, perched on the top of a rock overlooking the sea. Other locations included beaches at Kastani and Glysteri in Skopelos, the pretty port and beach of Damouchari in the Pelion and the old port of Skiathos.

Mamma Mia The Movie

The plot of Mamma Mia centres on a mother and daughter tale with Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) about to be married to Sky (Dominic Cooper). The action takes place at Villa Donna on the imaginary Kalokairi island in Greece (set mainly in Skopelos) where Sophie has grown up with her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep).

Sophie sends wedding invitations to the three men who wooed her mother, not knowing which one is her real father; Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgard). As the wedding guests arrive, including Donna’s old friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski), there’s lots of fun as Donna remembers past romances and re-creates her days as lead singer in the Dynamos girl band. Mamma Mia film locations in Skopelos

After months of research and preparation at the locations in Greece, the film crew arrived in 2007 on Skopelos to shoot the hit movie Mamma Mia. Having already filmed interior scenes at the Pinewood film studio near London, the location shoot was surprisingly quick, with the cast spending a week on Skopelos and five days at Damouchari.

Ever since, Skopelos has been known as “The Mamma Mia Island” a connection the locals are happy to re-live, since it’s so good for business! In bars and restaurants, look out for photos of cast members dining out during their filming and hear stories of what they got up to when many a glass of ouzo was enjoyed!

If you are a fan of the film, you can take a guided Mamma Mia tour to spend a day in Skopelos visiting the Mamma Mia film locations by coach, with time for swimming and a nice lunch by the sea.

The chapel of Agios Ioannis

On Skopelos, the star of the Mamma Mia film locations is the tiny chapel of Agios Ioannis, the setting for Sophie and Sky’s wedding. Perched on top of a rock, the chapel is reached by climbing the 202 steps with a reward of stunning views over the rocky coastline and beach below.

Due to the miniature size, a much larger version of the chapel interior was built in the Pinewood Studios, modelled on one of the churches in Skopelos town.

In the film, as Donna makes her way along the path to join the sunset wedding, she is met by Sam who proclaims that he still loves her. They sing “The winner takes it all” with the chapel as a backdrop.

Although the setting looks rural in the film, the actors must have been standing on the bend in the road that leads down to the sea, which is a good vantage point to take photos.

Later we see Donna running up the steep steps to the chapel to join the wedding, pausing in the doorway at the top look back at Sam (where you can also take a selfie!).

The wedding scene in Mamma Mia

As Donna walks Sophie up the aisle, there is confusion over which is her real father and Sam proposes to Donna in “I Do, I do, I do, I do, I do!”. Love is re-kindled between Sam and Donna but Sophie and Sky decide to postpone their wedding and go travelling as Sky had always wanted.

After climbing up the steps, enjoying the breathtaking views on the way up, take a well earned rest in the shady paved area around the chapel. When we visited, the chapel was open and as with all Greek churches entry is free but donations are appreciated. The inside of the chapel is tiny so you can see why the interior shots were recreated in the studio.

Visiting Agios Ioannis

When you visit Agios Ioannis chapel, the parking is at the bottom of the hill in front of the beach cafe. I suspect that in high season and at weekends this gorgeous location will get crowded with parking spaces tight, so time your visit accordingly.

The cafe serves food and drinks on the beach and runs the beach beds and umbrellas that you can rent. There’s also a small shop nearby called Sporades cosmetics that sells natural beauty products.

The beach at Agios Ioannis

After visiting the chapel, I can recommend walking down to the pretty beach to cool off in the clear turquoise waters. You can leave your things on the rock or pay to use the sun-beds that are serviced by the cafe who will bring you drinks and snacks.

Agios Ioannis is one of the key locations on the Mamma Mia tour and if you are nervous of narrow, winding roads, you may prefer to visit on the tour and let someone else do the driving.

Kastani beach

Kastani is one of the most beautiful beaches in Skopelos so it’s easy to see why it was chosen for the filming, for practical reasons (there’s good road access and parking) as well as visual ones. For the filming, a jetty and a beach bar were added, although both were removed once filming was complete.

Kastani Beach Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

This is where Sophie and Sky declare their love for each other as the waves wash over them in “Lay all your love on me”. Before things get too steamy, Sky is dragged away by his groomsmen. They goof about with flippers and masks on the jetty.

This scene was filmed at the western end of the beach where the white crags are clothed with green pines, making a pretty backdrop.

Another scene at the beach bar features Donna’s friend Tanya, a wealthy divorcee on the lookout for husband number four. She attracts the attentions of one of Sky’s friends, who is much younger than her.

With the help of the cast, Tanya belts out the sassy “Does your mother know” as they romp on the beach. For this scene a small beach bar was built at the rocky east end of the beach.

Visiting Kastani beach

Although the jetty and beach bar that feature in Mamma Mia are no longer there, this is an easy beach to spend time on. Kastani offers a busy beach cafe and lots of sun-beds as well as a water-sports rental. There’s a party atmosphere on summer evenings.

The land behind the beach is flat, so there’s plenty of parking and easy access in a short drive downhill from the coastal road. Kastani beach is also much visited by Mamma Mia fans and island coach tours. If you find it too crowded, just head to the equally beautiful Milia beach which is next along the coast.

If you don’t have a car, we recommend visiting Kastani beach as part of the Mamma Mia tour of Skopelos.

Glysteri beach

Another beautiful beach that makes an appearance is Glysteri, which is one of the closest to Skopelos Town (Chora). It’s on the rocky peninsula close to Glysteri that Sophie and her three fathers jump off the rocks at the end of their sailing trip when they sing “Our last summer”.

Glysteri Beach, Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

It’s not obvious which rocks were used in the filming. However, there is a platform to one side of the beach where you can have just as much fun jumping in to the water.

The olive groves above the beach were also used for some of the general scenes. For example, the one where Sophie sets off from Villa Donna for her wedding on a donkey.

Mamma Mia Film locations - Glysteri Beach, Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Glysteri is a popular beach that’s easily reached by road, or by a long walk from Skopelos town. There’s plenty of parking and a busy beach cafe. Sun-beds are available to rent and music throbs in high season.

The setting here is gorgeous and the location within a deep inlet means that the beach is somewhat protected and calmer in windy weather.

Glysteri Beach, Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Cape Amarandos in Skopelos

With pine covered rocks and clear turquoise water, the stretch of coast at Cape Amarandos in Skopelos makes an idyllic backdrop for some of the scenes in Mamma Mia.

Sophie weaves through the olive groves singing “Honey Honey” as she reads extracts of the mother’s diary. She learns that the mother spent the night with three different men who could be Sophie’s father.

This scene uses a compilation of views of the cliffs above Glysteri and Cape Amarandos where the girls run up the steep rocky path to Villa Donna.

The sailing scene in Mamma Mia

Sophie finds her three potential fathers aboard Bill’s yacht. They spend the afternoon together reminiscing about their carefree youth and singing “Our Last Summer”.

These idyllic sailing scenes on sparkling turquoise waters under the rocky cliffs were shot around Cape Amarandos in Skopelos. There are lots of hidden coves and rocky swimming places here.

Agnontas in Skopelos Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

If you look carefully you’ll spot the two windswept pines in the film on the small peninsula of Cape Amarandos. These are a much photographed landmark of Skopelos.

You can follow the dirt track with a jeep from the fishing port of Agnontas or walk along the top of the cliffs. You’ll discover some of these swimming places for yourself. Access can be quite challenging and much easier by boat.

Alternatively just enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of the fish tavernas in Agnontas near Cape Amarandos. Contemplate the beauty of the bay and pine clad hillside.

Where to stay in Skopelos

Skopelos is a small island, so wherever you stay it’s easy to get around, especially if you hire a car. We chose to stay at Panormos, which has one of the best beaches in Skopelos. It offers a wide selection of beach bars and tavernas.

Panormos Beach, Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

We were really happy with our choice. Panormos offered wonderful swimming, a well stocked local shop, plenty of eating out options and easy proximity to Skopelos town. Check prices and book accommodation in Panormos . In particular I’d recommend;

Adrina Hote l is a lovely 4 star hotel with 59 rooms, close to Panormos with its own small beach. The Mamma Mia 2 cast stayed here when they were doing interviews to promote the film.

The accommodation is set on the hillside overlooking the sea with a pool, restaurant, dive centre. There is easy access to the other restaurants on Panormos beach. The 5 star Adrina Resort next door is owned by the same family and offers similar facilities with suites and deluxe villas.

Mamma Mia film locations in Pelion, Greece

A few of the scenes from Mamma Mia were filmed on the Greek mainland on the Pelion peninsula. This is close to the Sporades islands of Skopelos and Skiathos.

We spent 10 days touring around the Pelion and can highly recommend the region for the pretty mountain villages with shady squares and its glorious, unspoiled beaches.

Damouchari Port Pelion Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

While staying at Agios Ioannis on the Pelion’s Aegean coast, we took the footpath around the headland. Here we found the tiny fishing port and hamlet of Damouchari that features in a couple of the scenes.

During the filming, the crew used a picturesque small guest house ‘Ghermaniko’ as their base on the harbour front. You can book it here if you’d like to stay there.

Check out our guide to Pelion Greece – from the mountains to the sea!

Damouchari Port

In the scene shot at Damouchari Port, Donna arrives in her battered jeep down the dirt track. She greets her two friends Rosie and Tanya who have just arrived on the ferry.

Together they relive their old Dynamo days. Later she confides to her friends that she doesn’t know who is Sophie’s father. Then the ladies dance down from Villa Donna to the port.

Damouchari Port Pelion Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The olive groves above Damouchari port were used for part of this dancing sequence, which gathers local women on the way. It ends in them all jumping off the jetty as they sing “Dancing Queen”.

Locals we met were happy to share their memories of the filming. It involved many of the local women as extras in the Dancing Queen sequence.

Damouchari Port Pelion Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

There’s no jetty in the small harbour now as it was built specially for the film. It was later dismantled to preserve the quiet character of the harbour.

The production crew spent a month before the scenes were shot here. They made sure that the charming cobbled streets of Damouchari looked just right to represent the pretty Greek island village on Kalokairi.

Damouchari Beach

A short walk past the port and through the cobbled streets of the hamlet brings you to the gorgeous Damouchari beach. Bordered by rocky cliffs on both sides, the beach is known for its round, white pebbles. This makes for crystal clear water that invites you to swim.

Damouchari Beach Pelion Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

There’s a beach cafe here and walkers can continue along the footpath. It leads up from the eastern end of the beach on an 8km hike to the mountain village of Tsagarada. You can also use the path to climb up a little way to the vantage point for photos looking down over the beach.

Damouchari Beach Pelion Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Where to stay in the Pelion

We travelled around the Pelion staying in a number of different locations. One of our favourites was the delightful Ammos Papanero guest house on Papa Nero Beach at Agios Ioannis.

The accommodation was simple, but the huge geranium filled terrace and sea views made this a wonderful place to stay in summer. From here we walked along the footpath at the end of the beach and over the headland to Damouchari.

For other places to stay in the Pelion, you can also check out the stylish mountain village hotel where we stayed in Makrinitsa. Also see the charming sea view guest house where we stayed in Afissos.

Mamma Mia Film Locations in Skiathos

The island of Skiathos is close to Skopelos. It has a more lively reputation than its quieter “Green and Blue” sister. This is partly due to having an international airport.

We didn’t visit Skiathos on this trip but it would make a good option for a twin centre holiday, spending time on both islands.

A couple of scenes from Mamma Mia were filmed here, the best known location being the Old Port of Skiathos. Here the three fathers gather to wait for the ferry to the island of Kalokairi.

Skiathos port Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The opening scene of the film, where Sophie sings “I have a dream” while writing the wedding invitations to her three fathers, also features views over the old town rooftops and church tower of Agios Nikolaos in Skiathos.

Film locations for Mamma Mia 2

Financial considerations meant that the sequel “Mamma Mia, here we go again” was filmed in the Croatian island of Vis rather than Greece. However, the cast did return to Skopelos in 2018 to stay at Adrina Resort on Panormos Beach. Here they conducted promotional interviews as part of the film’s launch.

This is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. You can of course enjoy a luxurious stay at the 4 star Adrina Hotel or 5 star Adrina Resort , just like the Mamma Mia cast! Watch “Mamma Mia, here we go” again here.

How to get to Skopelos, Skiathos and Pelion

To see the Mamma Mia film locations, the closest international airport is on the island of Skiathos, which serves the island group of the Northern Sporades. An alternative airport is Volos , which is mainly used for summer charter flights.

From Volos there are a regular ferries to Skopelos that take between 2 and 4 hours. The same ferries take an hour to cross from Skiathos to Skopelos. The Pelion locations on the mainland are closest to Volos airport.

Other major international airports to use are Thessaloniki or Athens. Then you would need to travel by bus or train to Volos and then take the ferry. An alternative would be to fly to Athens and then take an internal flight to Skiathos and then a ferry to Skopelos.

mamma mia tour in skopelos

If travelling via Volos I’d recommend you break your journey here and see a bit of the city. Read my guide to all the things to do in Volos

Ferry to Skopelos Greece

You can reach Skopelos and Skiathos by ferry, either from Volos, Thessaloniki or from Skiathos, depending on which airport you fly into. Ferries between Volos and the Sporades islands are operated by Hellenic Seaways, Anes Ferries , Blue Star Ferries and Aegean Flying Dolphins . Ferries from Thessaloniki are with Sea Jets .

It’s worth comparing the different operators as they vary in price and journey time. You can check prices for all the ferry companies here .

Assuming you are already in mainland Greece, bus is probably the best way to reach Volos. We took the inter-city bus from Athens, which runs several times a day and takes 4 hours. There’s a rest stop at the service station at the halfway point.

The inter-city bus from Thessaloniki to Volos also runs regularly and takes around 3 hours. Both buses can be booked online in advance at the KTEL website . Or, tickets can be bought on the day at the bus station. Look out for the buses that run direct which are the quickest.

To reach the Mamma Mia film location at Damouchari on the Pelion Peninsula, it’s easiest to travel by car from Volos. Cars can easily be hired near Volos Port. From Volos it’s around 1.5 hours to drive to Damouchari. You can find lots of accommodation nearby in the small resort of Agios Ioannis.

Long dream to visit the locations from Mama Mia 1 movie

Heather Cowper

Tuesday 14th of March 2023

@Michelle Hope your dream comes true, Skopolos is a gorgeous island

Life in a Mamma Mia Film

After the credits rolled on mamma mia, were you already dreaming of a trip to greece well, it’s time to book that ticket..

mamma mia tour in skopelos

The most recognizable Grecian cities people can visit are the capital, Athens, and the Island of Santorini. While both destinations have their own incredible cultures, tourists are often disappointed if they’re looking for the atmosphere of Mamma Mia ’s Kalokairi. You might think the solution is simply to hop on a ferry and take a trip to the shores of this carefree and music-filled island. This would be ideal; however, this Island is fictional. But don’t worry! The islands where Mamma Mia was filmed have the same stunning setting.

Most of Mamma Mia was set on the Island of Skopelos. Abba’s hits, such as “Does your mother know?” “Lay all your love on me,” and “I have a dream,” were all sung on this Island’s breathtaking beaches. So, if you’re looking for a nice ocean view and a spot to get that golden summer glow, this is the place to be.

While watching the film, you might have fallen in love with the picturesque cliffside church where Sophie chose not to tie the knot. If this is the case, you don’t want to miss the church of Agios Ioannis Kastri where the scene was set. But fair warning, you will have to climb about 199 steps to reach the location. So, grab a protein bar, drink some water, and do your morning stretches before you ascend.

mamma mia tour in skopelos

The other must-see island is Skiathos. It not only matches the ideal setting of Mamma Mia but also contains some well-known filming locations. Do you remember the port where all Sophie’s dads met for the first time? This can be found at the Old Port on the Western end of the Island. Another place to visit is the St. Nikolaos Bell Tower. In this area, Sophie mailed the letters to her three dads.

Skiathos is also the perfect place to fly into if you’re taking a plane to Greece. From here, you can book a ferry ticket to the other Islands of Greece. However, make sure you’re on time so you don’t miss your ferry as Bill probably won’t be there to pick you up on his boat.

If you’re wondering about staying in Villa Donna, you’ll be disappointed to learn that it was just another Hollywood movie set. However, there is no shortage of stunning villas in both Skiathos and Skopelos. Book your stay in one of these stunning villas to finish off your Mamma Mia experience.
