Matoke Tours focuses on affordable and original itineraries, which promote the region and its unique cultural and natural resources. Due to our extensive network of reliable service providers, we are able to offer a range of tours to suit all budgets to destinations throughout East Africa.  We however mainly focus on the mid-range to semi-luxe bracket.

Matoke Tours is known for being creative and innovative. We are pioneers in identifying and developing unmapped areas and off-the-beaten-track products to make our itineraries stand out.

We specialize in multi-country tours, combining several destinations into one coherent itinerary. Long-standing regional experience and extensive research including regular field visits guarantee that we work with the best service suppliers on ground and offer the best product available on the market.

Accommodations while on Safari in East Africa

Ground Transportation

Matoke Tours is one of the few companies in East Africa with its own car park and workshop. Transport can be customised to all budgets and preferences. We own Mini-buses with 7 window seats as well as land cruisers with 3, 5 and 7 window seats. All our vehicles are 4×4 with pop-up roof for excellent game viewing and photographing. Because we own a workshop, our vehicles are checked, serviced and tested after each safari.

Sustainable Tourism Development

Tourism is good but some times negatively affects the local community. In the first instance, tourism supports the country’s economy through foreign exchange earning, creates awareness and helps to protect wildlife and protected area/National Parks. Without tourism, the the endangered mountain gorillas as well as other animal species would have been extinct.

Because tourism comes with negative impacts to local people such as denying access of local people to resources in protected areas, Matoke tours as a tour operator, we have the role to reduce the negative influences on social/economic aspects, and environmental issues as much as possible. We believe that future generations can continue to enjoy the natural beauty of Africa.

Uganda is one of the most diverse countries on the African continent. With its incredible variety of nature, culture and wildlife, this destination is perfect for an authentic adventure experience. From the wildlife inhabited savannah plains to glacier covered mountains, from tracking chimpanzees in the rainforest to rushing down the rapids of the mighty Nile; no two days in Uganda are ever the same.

The savannah plains of Uganda’s national parks are inhabited by lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, leopards, hyenas, hippos, zebras, the unique Ugandan kob and many more. Uganda counts 24 monkey species inhabiting the various jungles, from the nocturnal galagos to the golden monkeys and the endangered mountain gorillas. In addition to the wide variety of mammals, Uganda is one of the most bird-rich countries in the world with over 1000 bird species, such as the prehistoric-looking Shoebill and the Great Blue Turaco.

Uganda’s rich culture is represented by over 45 tribes, offering a variety in languages and dialects, foods, dressing, customs and beliefs. Unique and responsibly developed activities allow genuine interaction with communities and create unforgettable immersive experiences.

Bwindi forest

Meet the endangered mountain gorillas.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is thought to have one of the richest faunal communities in East Africa, with an estimate of 120 mammal species in the park, ten of which are primates. It also contains more than 350 bird species and more than 200 butterfly species. Bwindi is home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas, allowing thrilling encounters through tracking and habituation experiences.

An authentic insight into an ancient culture

The Karamoja region is a hidden gem in Uganda, allowing an authentic insight into the ancient culture of the Karamojong people through responsibly developed encounters. The region as well has a stunning scenery for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists; the perfect destination for the true adventurer.

Murchison falls

Wildlife and thunderous waterfalls.

The Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest conservation area. Its most prominent feature is the Victoria Nile which cuts through the park, running along a series of rapids before forcing its way through a narrow cleft, resulting to be the worlds’ most powerful waterfall. The falls combined with rewarding game drive tracks, ranks the park amongst Uganda’s top-highlights.

Nestled on a peninsula on the fairytale-like Lake Mutanda in the southwest of Uganda, you will find Matoke Tours’ very own lodge at the foot of the Virunga Mountains. The imposing volcanic chain connects the countries of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. The lodge, Mutanda Lake Resort, can be the base for your activities in either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, or Mgahinga Gorilla Forest National Park. The region offers the opportunity to track the endangered mountain gorillas, hike the volcanoes, explore cultural trails or take a refreshing swim in the lake, among others.

How to get around in Uganda

4. Domestic flights

For those with limited time & creative itineraries, domestic flights are a great solution.

Best travel time

A great destination all year round.

Uganda is a great destination to visit all year round. Low season is considered to be from March to May & September to November, and the high season is from June to August & December to February. In general, travelers are fewer during the low seasons, making it a very interesting time to travel. Also some lodges offer discounts during low seasons, which is great if you’re looking for a good deal. High seasons are popular travel months, but as Uganda is still a relatively undiscovered destination, you rarely find big crowds.

Regarding weather, it is assumed that Uganda has a more rain during the low season, and is more dry during the high season. In recent years, however, we find that the seasons are not very reliable anymore, as we experience rainfall during ‘dry season’, and dry periods during a ‘rainy season’. Which ever season you decide to travel, Uganda has plenty of sun-hours all year round. When traveling to higher altitudes, such as Bwindi Forest, be prepared for low temperatures, especially at night.

Permit availability

It is important to know, that for the months of July and August, gorilla tracking permits sell out very quickly. We advise to secure your permits at least 6 months in advance.
