Mini Cooper Hardtop / Convertible
What's new for 2024.
Mini added the manual transmission back to the lineup last year, but only on the three-door hardtop models. Now, the six-speed stick is available across the entirety of the Cooper lineup, including convertible and five-door hardtop models. Last year's Resolute Edition package sticks around for the 2024 model year due to its popularity. Based on the top-spec Iconic trim, the Resolute Edition package adds Rebel Green exterior paint, bronze-colored hood stripes, and yellow and cream tweed interior upholstery. The Seaside Edition is new for 2024 and is exclusive to the Cooper S convertible models. The Seaside Edition comes in either Caribbean Aqua or Nanuq White exterior colors and wears unique body stripes, special wheels, black leather upholstery, and special decorative dashboard trim; only 500 will be offered, making the Seaside Edition cars fairly rare.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2024 Mini Cooper Hardtop / Convertible starts at $26,795 and goes up to $46,455 depending on the trim and options.
We'd choose to go with the manual transmission and put it in the more powerful 189-hp Cooper S Hardtop to maximize the fun-to-drive factor. The five-door Hardtop costs a bit extra, but we'd stick with the three-door since neither Mini is all that spacious. Beyond that, the personal customization options are numerous and desirable, and we'll leave them up to you.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The standard engine is a 134-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder, which provides adequate pep in this small, lightweight, front-drive vehicle. We prefer the S models, which come with a 189-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. With the larger engine, the S proved to be a little more than a second faster to 60 mph than with the base 1.5-liter engine , clocking in at 6.2 seconds . We found the automatic transmission shifts well, but the manual transmission is still our favorite as it provides the most driver engagement. The firm suspension lends itself to enthusiast-oriented driving, which can make the Mini Cooper exciting, but the ride can be unforgiving on rough roads.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Hardtop and convertible models with the base three-cylinder engine are rated for 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway with the automatic transmission and 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway with the manual. With the three-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual, we managed 38 mpg during our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route. The more powerful 2.0-liter engine in the Cooper S is rated slightly lower by the EPA, with automatic models earning ratings as high as 28 mpg city and 38 mpg highway and manual models earning ratings of 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. For more information about the Cooper's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Mini's interior is charmingly quirky but at the cost of user-friendliness. Rear-seat passenger space is tight, but front-seat occupants will find little reason to complain. The Convertible model's power top will fold in 18 seconds to unlock the joy of unlimited headroom. Too bad its trunk is tiny. Hardtop models offer more practicality inside their hatchback bodies—but still not a lot given the car's small size. The Hardtop model's trunk is quite small, offering room for just three carry-on suitcases in our testing. But drop the rear seats, and there's room for 12 carry-ons. The five-door Hardtop offers more space for cargo with the rear seats folded, but the Convertible offers less. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats come standard on the Mini Cooper, and a leather interior is optional.
Infotainment and Connectivity
All Mini Cooper models come standard with an 8.8-inch infotainment display and a digital gauge cluster. SiriusXM satellite radio is also standard across the lineup, but buyers seeking Apple CarPlay, in-dash navigation, or wireless phone charging will need to pay extra for those features. Android Auto is not available.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Overall safety rating (nhtsa).
The Mini Cooper comes with standard automated emergency braking and offers adaptive cruise control and park assist as options. For more information about the Cooper's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking
- Standard lane-departure warning
- Available adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Mini offers a slightly better warranty than other small-car manufacturers, particularly with complimentary scheduled maintenance. Volvo and BMW both offer complimentary scheduled maintenance plans that match Mini's policy.
- Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
- Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles

Retrofitting 5AS Driving Assistant and Adaptive Cruise Control 541 to a 2016 F54 Mini Clubman
- Add to quote
Can you confirm what I need... KAFAS was installed as standard, so I don't think I need a specific FLA camera. I have the stalk for headlight assist. I have the buttons for Adaptive Cruise Control. But I'm now seeing that I might also need an SAS module! Can anyone confirm? Also, if I'm understanding the wiring currently, I'll need a twisted pair to the BDC for the CAN, and another 3 wires for the flexray? Is that correct? Lastly, do I need to connect anything to R2 or R3? Or does the CAN connect directly into the BDC? I'm presuming the flexray HAS to connect to the BDC? Many thanks.
have you found more information about this retrofit? thanks .
I'm almost entirely certain that the FLA camera is no longer required. I already have KAFAS, I've obtained the SAS ECU, steering wheel stalks and buttons. The hardest thing to obtain is the connector plug for the SAS unit as it's not available when to BMW dealers as a part, it only comes on complete harnesses. I have one on order. Once I've got everything together, I'll try and put a guide together. I've got a huge project lined up and I'm going to do it all at the same time.
your car does not carry sas unit? how to know if i have sas?
If you don't have the driving assistant, high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, or variable damper control/active suspension, you won't have a SAS ECU.
If I have high beam assist, it means that I have the SAS ECU?
With Park assist ?

you have the part number of the ecu and the wiring? Do you have to install the new button panel on the steering wheel with the additional buttons? thanks .
SAS part number RealOEM.com - Part Search I set a default distance in sas ecu. I didn’t change the button. you need make wire harness to connect ecu.
and how do you connect it to start working? with which button? Do you have to connect the sas module to the bdc, to the power supply, and somewhere else? Thanks.
Does anyone knows what is the mean for distance bar moving ?? The car stop automatically and show this on my cluster. Measure the distance ??
You're lucky you had the camera. That's what's stopped me from doing this, and I have active dampers so already have the SAS. Starts with replacing the windshield.... Dan
Any Idea?
I would presume so. It should be in the boot near the PDC ECU if you have
It's not the same as the CANBUS resistors either. It's keyed differently. However, I don't suppose it would be to difficult to make it fit with a dremel 😎 But I've got one of those that I linked to above. That fits
@maaii I've just kicked myself into gear and am going to get in with this. I have a question for you though. Before the install, did you have the Park Manoeuvring Assistant? If not, did you change the pulse generators in the front wheels... RealOEM lists a different part number for vehicles with PMA/ACC. Also, did you need to do anything with the ABS pump. There's one on RealOEM with an end date of 2017 (after my car was produced) with 541=NO against it. The rest don't say anything. I have all the wires, and I've ordered the 7E and 6F FSC codes. I also have all the buttons and switches for the steering wheel and column.
Hi CmdrBond did you have the Park Manoeuvring Assistant? ---> Yes, I have this, It's from factory. If not, did you change the pulse generators in the front wheels... ---> I think, don't care about this. did you need to do anything with the ABS pump. -->No, I didn't change ABS pump. I can use ACC stop & go all function normally. I can't find any errors on ISTA. I also have all the buttons and switches for the steering wheel and column. -->I also didn't change the switch, I set the default value on "2"

Hello Do you see SAS ECU in SVT tree? Do you try to initial flexray in BDC?
Nothing fitted yet - planning on doing this Thurs/Fri
I think you should work on add sas ecu in your car . If you want to retrofit acc , and sas ecu in svt tree is very important . you also need to use tool32 and Ista
I already have auto high beam and auto brake. does It mean that i have the sas ecu?
If you car has 223 adaptive suspension, you should have SAS ecu. You can check all ecu tree on ISTA or Esys
I don't have adaptive suspension.
For Adaptive Cruise Control - Mini S Cooper 2021 -- How can I set the DEFAULT DISTANCE DEFAULT from 4 bars to 2 bars? I have BimmerCode App - is there an Expert Setting I can use?
I bought a new steering wheel, but it has 3 connectors, and it seems like the third one is for the ACC. Any Idea?
Can you post a picture of the connectors?
Cmdrbond, what pins are you hoping on using to create the wiring? Are you getting pre crimped leads or crimping yourself? Im going to start this at a slow pace, thinking of pre doing the wiring first, if i can get a plug, in location ready to go, maybe itll give me the push to spend on a SAS module. also for anyone thats a coding guru, whats the main “free” additions that the sas opens up once fitted? I know ACC is one.
Do you have the SAS ECU?
Hi, yes, were you able to retrofit?
Can you show me your FA and SVT tree? Did you use 541 to code ACC
I am looking at ordering a SAS module now, 34526860936. What would I need to do to activate this module into my car? Would this be done through E-sys, What FSC codes would be be needing, I think Im going to look at the Loom myself but happy to get one from Maaii
Ordered a SAS module, First step to getting this done
Anyone know the Code for the SAS Module bracket? My car doesnt seem to have anything for it to mount on

Hi everyone, it's my first post but I've been stalking this forum for great information. I managed to pick up a new 2023 Mini SE for $3500 off MSRP off the lot and I just noticed I don't think the car comes with intelligent cruise control even though it shows it on the window sticker. I haven't reached out to the dealer yet but my quick google search seems to show some SEs indeed don't have it due to the chip shortage. Is this an option to add in future? I'm guessing no, I'm just surprised the window sticker still showed it but the car obviously doesn't have the functionality. Thanks
Louis W Member
Adaptive cruise has had mixed availability this past year. Sometimes it was only available with the Iconic trim line and other times not at all. What does the item on your sticker say? If it's on the window sticker, then it should be included.

Run your VIN though one of the decoders and check what the car was built with. Regular cruise control is 544 and active cruise control is 541. I ordered 541, but my car came with 544 because of the chip shortage. Check out “bimmer.work”

If the car is delivered with less equipment than what was ordered - do dealers or mini give a discount?

Dynamic cruise control’s “braking function” just means it uses the brakes to maintain a steady speed going down hills. Adaptive cruise on the MINI is called “ Active Cruise Control with stop & go.”

To be quite honest, it works, but it doesn’t work anywhere near as well (or as reliably) as the ACC on any Asian-brand car, so IMO it’s not worth the price I paid as an option, and no way is it good enough to spend the money and effort to retrofit it to the SE. My biggest complaint isn’t even that it cuts out randomly (as so many here have complained about), but rather that the minimum following distance one can set is still unbelievably long for anybody who drives on urban and suburban freeways. People keep spotting this huge gap and move into it, and the car stabs the brakes hard. It is frankly less safe than it should be in most of my driving environment.

I use my ACC daily. My round trip to work is about 80 miles. The road I drive on is only a 2 lane road so the distance between me and the car in front of me is great. The ACC does cut out for me when driving directly into sunlight for extended periods of time, or if there are a lot of shadows on the road. I have found that you can turn off ACC and make it the standard cruise control by long pressing the distance between cars button. ACC was a must for me when picking my Mini. I wish it had active lane centering which would of made my daily trips to work much more enjoyable. Overall I give the ACC for my purposes a C+ or a B-.
GvilleGuy Well-Known Member
I am to Mini ACC what @insightman is to the fake hood scoop: I'm not a fan of my ACC, and I will tell anyone who asks. It was the feature I was most excited about on my new 2022, and the most disappointing implementation I've ever seen in a modern car. The camera-only system is not sufficient and cuts out way too often, requiring a long press of a distance button to activate standard cruise. It needs the addition of radar / lidar. I still use it, but it is very common for it to cut out once on every trip longer than 20 minutes or so. The other day it cut out with no tree shadows and a completely clouded daylight sky. (normally it's the sun that fools it)
ColdCase Active Member
Most owners manuals warn that it is not safe using adaptive cruise control in rush hour type traffic. I agree RADAR based systems work better.
Danielle Strange New Member
Same thing happened to me when I ordered I was under the impression it was coming on the car. I have a 23 iconic plus and I realized when driving home it wasn’t on the car. I text my dealer and this was his response. “DCC for 23 was only available in JCWs, and countryman when your car went into production. It’s still not available for SEs” I was very disappointed.
I've had the ACC fail on snow, rain, fog, and direct sunlight. Radar cruise control on my previous vehicles was a bit better but that too failed with mud and dead bugs. It's nice to have, but I wouldn't rely on it.
Don’t get me wrong, I use mine every time I’m behind the wheel. It’s just that I’ve also used ACC in a bunch of other cars, and this is the worst implementation I’ve yet experienced. The occasional cut-out on back roads when there’s an oncoming truck is annoying but I’m getting used to it; it’s rare that there’s another car on my bumper when I’m on back roads. No, for me it’s truly the large following distance gap, because when my car suddenly brakes for no reason, the people right behind me who are not driving a MINI with ACC on are a hell of a lot closer to my bumper than I am to the car in front of me.

Electric Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (10 Popular Models)
Adaptive cruise control (ACC) improves on the older cruise control system, automatically slowing to maintain a pre-set distance or accelerating the car to the driver’s pre-set speed relative to the vehicle ahead.
As the newest form of widely-adopted alternative energy vehicles, many electric cars and SUVs feature adaptive cruise control as part of advanced safety technologies, including the navigation system, lasers, and cameras.
Some electric cars debuted with the more-sophisticated adaptive cruise system, while others had basic cruise control, especially the older model years of used EVs.
Affordable Electric Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control
#1 nissan leaf.
Nissan Leaf is one of the earlier mainstream electric cars to hit the market, offering an entry-level EV for budget-minded shoppers wanting an alternative-energy vehicle.
When Nissan introduced the first-generation Leaf in 2011, it offered cruise control across all trim levels.
The 2018 Nissan Leaf kicked off the second generation. A more advanced adaptive cruise control (ACC) became available for those willing to spend slightly more for a higher-spec trim, while the standard model maintained a basic cruise control system.
Its driving demeanor may not excite like some pricier EVs, but the available ACC and quiet driving experience should ease freeway commuting for Leaf owners.
#2 Chevrolet Bolt EV
The Chevy Bolt is the American company’s first EV, and, despite the compact status, it offers a surprisingly spacious cabin.
Considering the responsive steering, a 200-plus-mile range, and available adaptive cruise control (in the upper trims since 2022), the sub-$30k price tag brand-new should make the purchase decision easier.
Unfortunately, the Chevy Bolt EV does not have standard adaptive cruise control; few will complain, though, given the affordable pricing.
#3 MINI Cooper Electric
When the electrified Mini Cooper debuted in 2020, it lacked safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
However, that changed in 2022, when the sophisticated adaptive cruise system became standard in the Mini Cooper electric so that the little car could maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead.
Electric SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control
Available since 2022, this electric SUV is one of the best-looking EVs and has impressively balanced handling and sharp steering, making it abundantly fun to drive.
With plenty of room in both rows, sleek styling, and adaptive cruise control as standard equipment in all model years, the Kia EV6 will satisfy most electric SUV buyers looking at the $40k-plus price range.
The adaptive cruise control comes with a lane-centering feature.
#5 Hyundai IONIQ 5
This Hyundai EV shares many similarities with the related Kia EV6, with similar power, range, and features.
Since debuting in 2022, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric SUV has had adaptive cruise control as standard equipment – like the Kia EV6.
Considering the near-identical pricing and both EVs’ attractive stylings, your choice will come down to driving preference.
Choose the EV6 for a sportier drive or the IONIQ 5 if ride comfort is paramount to you.
#6 Kia Niro EV
Niro EV is an all-electric version of the Niro Hybrid; both sport an impressive list of standard features and roomy interiors for compact SUVs.
Kia introduced the Niro EV in 2019 and equipped it with advanced adaptive cruise control as a standard driver-assistance feature from the get-go.
Niro EV’s adaptive cruise control is easy to operate and works smoothly, especially in traffic.
#7 Hyundai Kona Electric
Like the regular gasoline-powered Kona, the electrified version offers agile handling, a comfortable cabin, and loads of features for the money.
Hyundai Kona electric SUVs have had adaptive cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic since debuting in 2019, but the feature’s availability is limited to the more expensive trims.
Still, this EV’s traffic-adaptive cruise control uses the forward-facing camera and radar to maintain the set distance from the car ahead (rpd), with the system able to work down to a complete stop.
#8 Mazda MX-30
The MX-30 drives like most Mazdas, with sporty handling and sharp steering, making the little EV a joy to drive around town.
Making its appearance as an all-new EV in 2022, the Mazda MX-30 has had adaptive cruise control as standard, helping it to maintain a driver-set distance from the vehicle in front.
Other safety equipment in the Mazda MX-30 includes:
- Forward collision mitigation.
- Rear parking sensors.
- Lane-keeping assist.
- Lane departure warning system.
- Blind-spot monitoring system.
#9 Toyota bZ4X
Toyota entered the EV fray with the bZ4X in 2023, with shoppers getting a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive for enhanced wet-weather grip.
Opting for this electric SUV also means you don’t have to choose a trim level, as every Toyota bZ4X comes with standard adaptive cruise control.
The system adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance from the car ahead while changing speed smoothly for more gradual acceleration and deceleration.
#10 Volkswagen ID.4
The ID.4 represents Volkswagen’s first electric SUV as the German marque looks to compete with its Asian counterparts in the EV field.
Fortunately for shoppers of this EV, all Volkswagen ID.4 models benefit from a host of standard safety aids, including adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assist, blind spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.
The adaptive cruise control is particularly useful in slow-moving traffic, taking the stress out of daily work commutes.
Mainstream gas-powered SUVs with the adaptive cruise system are aplenty, offering buyers more affordable options, especially the used ones.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital
There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.
How to find the right boat?
There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.
Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.
This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.
Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).
If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.
Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.
How to buy tickets?
Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.
“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.
Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.
Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.
Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.
Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.
This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.
Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.
“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.
There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.
Where to sit onboard?
Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.
The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.
Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.
There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
