Ladakh region Motorcycle Tour Grade Riding the Himalayas is often regarded as the toughest adventure ride in the world with some of the planet’s most extreme roads. Reaching altitudes of 5,600m including two of the highest motorable roads in the world and it is certainly tough in parts. It is full of uphill and downhill hairpins, sometimes on tarmac but often on gravel roads. The climate is unpredictable and can be extremely harsh with all four seasons experienced in one day. You could experience riding in mud while it is misty and raining with minimal visibility in 50C temperatures while dodging oncoming traffic. The riders on the Himalayan Heroes 2013 tour experienced these very conditions twice and they all said it was the best two days of the tour! While it is usually suggested that riders have a minimum of 2 years of off-road riding experience; there were several riders on the Himalayan Heroes ride of 2013 that had no off-road riding experience. The riders that handled it well were the confident and competent road riders. If you are a new or not a confident rider then this expedition will prove too much of a challenge for you and possibly put not only yourself but the other riders at risk. If you are not sure of your abilities, please talk to us first before you book this tour.

Motorcycle Expeditions & Logistic Every tour is conducted by our hugely experienced motorcyclist guides. The staff has years of all-terrain experience allowing you to enjoy the bike, the ride, and the many wonders the Indian Himalayas has to offer. We provide the best Himalayan motorcycling experience by ensuring that your safety is paramount. Our motorcycles, backup vehicles, mechanics, staff, accommodation is second to none. Our tours are designed to cater to riders of all abilities looking for that once-in-a-lifetime experience. We know how important your holiday time is to you, so we don’t skimp on organizational detail. We’ll take care of all transport and accommodation while you’re here, and then whisk you safely back to the airport for your trip home – simple as that.

Please Note • This ride will take place at high altitudes and on unpredictable roads, therefore the tour operator insists riders seek travel insurance. • Riders should also have a check-up or consult with their doctor before they travel. • Please consult the terms & conditions on our webpage. • Kindly note this itinerary can be changed or modified due to any uncertainty of Mother Nature such as landslides, heavy rainfall blocking roads. This is beyond our reach. In this case, our guide will take the appropriate decision according to the situation on the spot, which gives priority to your safety. • A deposit of US$300 must be paid on arrival in India. You are responsible for any damage to your bike during the trip. On the off chance that you damaged the motorcycle, the repair charges will be deducted from this deposit and the balance will be reimbursed after the trip is over.

Visa for India First of all, please note that today it is irrelevant whether you refer to India. To facilitate the issuance of visas through an Indian Embassy or Permanent Mission, it is best if persons with pre-booked travel arrangements submit along with their visa application a so-called “e-Tourist Visa (e-TV)” from this website: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/ We shall obtain our tour company registration together with the hotel confirmation letter and forward it to you. The confirmation letter implies that the tour operator is responsible for you during your entire stay in India and eliminates further questioning by the Indian Embassy. Please note that Indian Embassies generally do not consider the exact travel dates but simply stamp visas valid for 3 months and entitling the holder to 1 single entry into India within these 3 months. Therefore, we will forward to you the visa confirmation letter approximately 1 ½ month before the start of the tour to ensure that the validity of your visa will extend beyond the length of your stay in India. Once you have received your visa confirmation letter, you should contact the nearest Indian Embassy or Permanent Mission to obtain visas application forms, fill in the visa application forms in triplicate, attach one passport photo to each copy of the application form and enclose a printout copy of the visa confirmation letter with the application. Please refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_diplomatic_missions_of_India/ for a list of all Chinese Embassies, Permanent Missions, and Consulate Generals.

14. A Word of Caution Motorcycling in the mountainous areas of the Indian continental (Himalaya & Karakorum), is surely one of the best ways to experience the region’s rich cultures, friendly people, and unequaled scenery. At the same time, motorcycling does have its dangers – Especially on narrow mountain roads with unpredictable traffic & quickly changing weather conditions. This tour operated “Big Bike Tours”, should be undertaken by fit, experienced riders with an open mind to accept the changing conditions and different rules of the road. We granite you an everlasting lifetime or life-changing motorcycling with us in India (Himalayas & Karakoram). a. Additional Documents – In addition to the required documents, it is always advisable to bring with you the following documents important documents you must bring with you on tour are: b. Credit card company contact number (in case of loss or theft). e. International Driving Permit – Translated if necessary f. Motorcycle License – Translated if necessary g. Travel Insurance – To cover riding large capacity motorcycles as a means of transport you must have a suitable Travel Insurance Policy. It is your responsibility to obtain a suitable travel insurance policy covering your health, personal belongings and it must cover you whilst riding large capacity motorcycles as a means of transport.

15. Where to ride and when to ride? a. A basic ‘Rule of Thumb’ as to ‘Where to Ride and When’ is, as winter approaches, we ride south. b. During winter it is too cold to ride in the high mountains and high passes will be covered with snow. We ride through western, central, and down to southern India Rajasthan, Kerala-Tamilnadu. c. From the beginning of spring, we ride across Nepal-On the road to Kathmandu and through Bhutan-The Legendary Ride. In late spring, we can reach Lhasa from Kathmandu. e. During the Monsoon, we cross the southern ranges of the Himalayas and enjoy the warm dry weather where the Ladakh Plateau is shadowed by the Monsoon rain. This is the time to ride through Spiti-Kinnaur-The lost kingdom and the mighty Trans-Himalayan Ride Ladakh and west to Zanskar and Kashmir. f. In the Summer, when the rainy season has finished across the sub-continent riding conditions are nice from the mid-Himalayan Ranges – Uttarakhand-Homage to Mighty Ganges’ and Himachal Pradesh-The valley of Gods and Goddesses and across the northeast of India through Bhutan and Tibet, are all accessible regions.

16. Packing Essentials Riding in the Himalayas always requires a range of clothing. The passes are sometimes very cold. Crossing Tanglang La (5,300mtrs) for example there is sometimes snow. Your riding jacket though should be well ventilated. Evenings in the mountains can be cool. we advise you to bring a warm pullover or body-warmer. Riding in South India requires lightweight, cool clothing, with a woolen pullover or fleece for chilly evenings. Riding during the day can get very hot, so protective/armored clothing should be lightweight and well ventilated. Remember to bring swimwear and a lightweight towel. For Ladakh, Nepal, and Tibet you can manage with lightweight clothes provided you bring thermal underwear. Evenings can be chilly when the sun goes down. After the summer season, warm clothes are required. We provide a fleece sleeping bag and a lightweight long-sleeved fleece jacket. When visiting Temples or Gompas you must remove your shoes, slip-on and zipped boots make this lot easier. Often newcomers to India and Nepal will bring too much “stuff”! All over India and Nepal, the essentials are available, from toothpaste to batteries, from headache tablets to pants and socks. It’s part of the experience to buy simple requirements as you go along. We always wear Helmets! It is the law to wear a helmet everywhere we ride. ‘Local quality’ helmets can be bought in larger cities though your own is always more comfortable. We recommend you travel to India with rugged, ‘soft’ luggage, which can later be stowed in our hotel or the support jeep. Bring casual clothes for evenings and non-riding times.

17. Tips for Planning Your Arrival  It may not always be possible, but planning to arrive a day before your tour starts, gives you time to rest and acclimatize to local conditions. This is particularly important if you be flying onwards to Leh, which at an altitude of 3,500m, gives you time to get used to the climate there. It is often the case that the onward flight to Leh connects well with your arrival in Delhi. Part of your Tour Booking and Planning process includes submitting forms with your Flight Times and Arrival Dates. You can submit these details through The Rider Pages after you have confirmed your booking. The Rider Pages contain other details about your tour. If you are planning to arrive a day or two early, let us know and we can arrange to collect you from the airport and book hotel rooms for you. You can let us know by email and in the Flight Arrival and Visa details Form you will complete in The Rider Pages. If you wish to transfer to the hotel we have booked for you, unaccompanied, we strongly advise you to take only Government Registered Taxis, particularly when arriving in India. If you plan to stay for several days after your Tour we are happy to help with your accommodation and travel plans. If you have questions about anything, please ask!

18. Emergencies  Nobody wants to get hurt or injured on tour but accidents do sometimes happen. You should have a Travel Insurance Policy that is sufficient for your personal needs. Check your insurance policy covers such needs as hospitalization or repatriation. Sometimes we ride in remote locations in which there will be no mobile signal, no helicopter recovery service and ambulances may not be available. The Tour Leader will ensure the best possible evacuation/services are provided – given our location and the services available locally. As part of the booking process, we ask Riders to provide an alternative emergency contact. In the unfortunate event that anything serious should happen to you, we will inform this alternative contact of your condition as soon as possible. If you are unwell on a ride day, you may ride in the support vehicle, assuming we have one with us even though with 2 riders. The mechanic will ride your bike until you are fit to ride again. Most medicines are available almost everywhere. Asian medicines tend to work more effectively on Asian ailments. If you use medication be sure to bring ample supplies with you. Your preferred brands of toiletries may not always be available. Drinking water comes in 1Lt plastic bottles and we drink bottled water at all times. The stock is always in our backup Jeep. Be aware that your insurance may cover helicopter rescue, but that we may have to send a messenger for one day back down the road to find a telephone that works to summon one, assuming the nearest helicopter is in working order. For that reason alone we will always wear helmets and armored riding gear. We ensure our riders stick to a minimum “2 Second Rule” keeping a safe separation between riders.

As we descend into the Lahaul Valley the roads get a bit rougher, but with its cascading waterfalls and rugged terrain, the scenery is no less impressive. Tonight’s destination is the small town of Keylong… if your beard needs a trim, we recommend the local barber experience!

Day 6: Keylong - Sarchu 100km Click to expand

We’ll ride smooth tarmac in the morning that curves its way up to the scenic Baralacha La pass which sits at a whopping 4,883m above sea level. We stop just on the other side for lunch and there are three things that might now happen:

  • You might feel a bit queasy;
  • You might feel a bit drunk and giddy – happy days!
  • Nothing at all.

Don’t worry though, this is just your body acclimatising to the high altitudes and it should not last long. Our medic will be on hand to monitor your blood oxygen levels and we have oxygen bottles to hand if required.

Back on the bikes, we’ll descend onto the Sarchu plateau where our campsite awaits. After enjoying a buffet dinner in the food tent we will light a bonfire to keep our toes warm and toast marshmallows! Perfect.

  • Accommodation: Large tents with attached WC and proper camp beds.

Day 7: Sarchu - Leh 260km Click to expand

After breakfast we will saddle up for what might well be the most beautiful days riding you’ll have ever experienced – this is certainly the opinion of Toby, one of the Ride Expeditions owners!

A great start to the day as we ride up Gata Loops – 21 hairpin turns that snake up the mountainside. Riding towards the Upper Indus Valley and over two more of the world’s highest passes – Lachalung La at 5,085m and Tanglang La at 5,330m – the winding roads are joyful to ride and there are breathtaking views around each and every corner.

We do have a larger distance to cover today, but the road conditions are excellent – with exceptions of course – we’re still in the Himalayas – so we’re able to increase the pace.

  • Accommodation: Hotel just outside of town.

Day 8: Leh - Rest Day or ride out to Alchi Monastery Click to expand

Enjoy a day of rest, local sightseeing and exploring the fascinating mountain town of Leh – the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Ladakh. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, cafes and markets. There are many monasteries and ancient temples that are well worth a visit, as is the impressive 9-storey abandoned Leh Palace that overlooks the town.

If you can not bear to be separated from your steed then we will arrange for your tour leader to ride the awesome roads out to Alchi Monastery – Ladakh’s oldest monastery – for lunch.

  • Included Meals: Breakfast, dinner.

Day 9: Leh - Pangong Lake 175km Click to expand

Riding over Chang La pass at 5,280m we’ll cruise over towards Pangong lake – the highest salt water lake in the world. Watch out for the huge Himalayan Yaks that patrol the valley! We’ll stop for a picnic lunch alongside a stream in this beautiful valley, before continuing down towards the lake. Careful because the horses will try and eat your sarnies…

The lake, shared by both India and China, is 134km long and a spectacular sight with snow capped mountains and orange rock faces reflecting off of the perfectly clear blue waters.

  • Accommodation: Comfy yurts with big beds and attached WCs.

Day 10: Pangong Lake - Nubra Valley 190km Click to expand

After enjoying breakfast and a couple of cups of chai tea down by the lake, we’ll saddle up for another days fine riding through the mountains. We’ll travel through an incredibly remote region along an old military road alongside the Shyok River. The smooth road surfaces cruise us down into the beautiful Nubra Valley.

  • Accommodation: Luxury campsite.

Day 11: Nubra - Turtuk - Nubra 165km Click to expand

Today we ride out to have lunch in the small village of Turtuk, located just 7km from the Pakistan border. You might’ve thought that you’d already seen all the different types of terrain the Himalayas has to offer – think again! This road is an incredible ride and the views are smack-in-the-face amazing.

After arriving back at the camp and sinking a cold Kingfisher or two, it’s into the support vans and out to the sand dunes to visit the camels and enjoy a spectacular sunset.

Back at camp – you’ve guessed it – another camp fire awaits!

Day 12: Nubra Valley - Leh 130km Click to expand

We’ve saved the big one ’til last – Khardung La Pass! Join the elite handful of motorcyclists that have stood on top of the world with their motorcycle by their side. Reputed to be the highest motorable road in the world (actually, it isn’t, but it’s pretty damn close!), Khardung La pass sits at 5,380m above sea level – that’s the same height as Mt. Everest base camp!

We’ll ride down the other side on rocky dirt roads until we reach our final destination. We’ll enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel restaurant and say goodbye to the support team.

FAQs Click to expand

Do i need a visa click to expand.

Yes, unless you are a national of Nepal, Bhutan or the Maldives. If you are from an eligible country, the easiest way to get one is to apply for an e-tourist visa online, but make sure you visit the official site… Here’s the link .

Assuming you live in an eligible country / territory you can apply online up until a minimum of 4 days in advance of the date of arrival with a window of 120 days. So for example, if you are applying on 1st Sept you can select arrival date from 5th Sept to 2nd Jan.

For peace of mind, we recommend you do this nicely in advance to avoid any delays or issues. The visa lasts 60 days so unless you decide to extend your trip for vastly more than the length of the tour, then this should be plenty. When you arrive at Delhi airport, there is an immigration form to fill in before you queue up to show your visa. Now we all know Brits love to queue but don’t wait to get to the front just to have the man send you to the back past everyone to fill in the form, it’s just embarrassing.

Follow this link for the most up to date entry requirements. This is a link to the UK foreign office website – if you are not a UK resident, please search for the equivalent info from your home country’s foreign office.

Visa costs, if applicable, are not included in the tour price.

How can I avoid altitude sickness? Click to expand

  • Stay well hydrated. Caffeine and alcohol impacts hydration, so it’s a good idea keep intake to a minimum until you are acclimatised.
  • Apparently a high potassium diet helps. Lots of bananas then…
  • Make a conscious effort to breathe properly as we climb to higher altitudes – you want to saturate your blood with oxygen. Your tour leader will explain this in more detail in your welcome briefing.
  • Diamox is an altitude sickness tablet – please do your own research on this – if you decide you would like to take these, we always carry a stock with us. You’ll want to start taking these in Delhi, before we start climbing.
  • Oxygen – we carry oxygen bottles with us on every trip. Our medic will keep an eye on everyone and monitor peoples stats. He will administer oxygen if necessary.
  • Ibuprofen if you start to feel a headache coming on.

How do I book? Click to expand

To secure your place we simply need a 20% non-refundable deposit (subject to a minimum of £500). The remainder does not need to be paid until 60 days prior to the tour start date.

How do I carry my main luggage? Click to expand

This Royal Enfield motorcycle tour will be followed by either one or two support vehicles depending on group size. This means that all your luggage goes in there rather than having it bounce around on the back your Royal Enfield for miles on end. You just need to take either a tank bag or small rucksack for your camera and any travel essentials.

Is Ride Expeditions insured? Click to expand

Yes. Here at Ride Expeditions, we take the necessary precautions to ensure that we protect both ourselves and you as the customer, with insurances covering financial failure, public liability, professional indemnity and employers liability (you will need your own travel insurance).

To obtain this insurance we must meet strict safety standards and local regulations. We must also carry out thorough risk assessments about all aspects of a tour before tyres can hit tarmac (…or dirt!).

Is it safe to drink the tap water? Click to expand

NO! Although the locals may be drinking tap water, doing the same has a strong possibility of playing havoc with your insides. It’s called Delhi Belly for a reason.

We recommend that you drink only bottled water and that you check the seal before drinking. If you choose canned drinks, give the lid a good wipe beforehand just to be sure. And when brushing your teeth, rinsing with bottled water is a good idea too.

Is my money safe? Click to expand

Yes. All passengers booking with Ride Expeditions Ltd are fully insured for the initial deposit, and subsequently the balance of monies paid as detailed in your booking confirmation form. The policy also includes repatriation if required, arising from the cancellation or curtailment of your travel arrangements due to the insolvency of Ride Expeditions Ltd. This insurance has been arranged by Towergate Travel through Evolution Insurance.

Is this trip suitable for those with limited mobility? Click to expand

Not riding the motorcycle, no (although this will of course depend on the extent of your limited mobility). However, we may be able to accommodate you in our support vehicle. We advise you to give us a call and we can discuss.

Is wi-fi available throughout the trip? Click to expand

In theory yes, although in practice, Wi-Fi coverage can be slow at best, slower on average and non-existent on many occasions. We advise you activate your ‘out-of-office’!

What are the health / immunisation considerations? Click to expand

For the most accurate and up to date info, we advise you visit the Indian page of the ‘Travel Health Pro’ website .

Please also consult with your own doctor at home at least 8 weeks before your trip.

What currency should I bring with me? Click to expand

This one is both simple and complicated. The local currency is Indian Rupees – INR. However, unless you are a resident of India, importing rupees is prohibited so you cannot actually obtain the notes outside the country itself like you can for other countries.

You can either bring in other currencies to exchange when in India, or simply withdraw rupees from ATMs as you would back at home. Well we say that, but if you are in a remote village with only three residents, a yak and an elderly donkey, there may not be an ATM, so don’t expect universal coverage throughout the trip!

If you do bring cash, US dollars are universally welcome. Bitcoin, coloured buttons and belly button fluff are not. Whatever you bring, try not to exchange too much at the arrival airport – the exchange rate is terrible! There are ATMs at the airport too.

What documents / licenses do I need? Click to expand

To be legally riding in India you are required to carry your local driving licence, which must cover the size of bike you will be riding. This will also be a stipulation of any travel insurance company too.

You will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is basically an official, multi-language translation of your driving licence.

What is the average group size? Click to expand

Average group sizes are 8-9 riders and we limit the groups to 14 riders.

What is the cancellation policy? Click to expand

If you cancel your booking before departure, cancellation charges will be applied as follows:

  • 61 days or more before tour start date – retention of deposit
  • 42-60 days before tour start date – retention of 50% of tour price
  • 28-41 days before tour start date – retention of 70% of tour price
  • 0-27 days before tour start date – retention of 100% tour price

Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for further info regarding cancellations, changes and transferring your trip to a friend.

What is the official travel advice? Click to expand

For the most accurate and up to date info on travel advice for India, we advise you to visit the foreign office website.

Follow this link for Indian advice from the UK foreign office. As we are a UK company, this is the official government advice we follow. If you are not a UK resident, we advise you search for the equivalent info from your own country’s foreign office, as travel advice may differ.

What's the minimum number of riders required for this tour? Click to expand

The minimum required number for this trip to run is 6 riders. We reserve the right to cancel the tour if this number is not met and we will provide you with a minimum of 56 days notice. Please know that this is an absolute last resort for us and we will always do everything in our power to avoid this happening.

Which payment methods do you accept? Click to expand

We accept GBP payments by Visa, Mastercard & American Express and direct bank transfers. Please get in touch if you would rather pay in another currency – we’ll do our best to accommodate!

Which plug types are used in India? Click to expand

There are 2 types of sockets in India – 3 Pin connections – Type D, or 2 pin connections -Type C.

Leh Ladakh bike trip

A motorcycle tour across the breathtaking Himalayan mountains

The Leh-Manali Highway, otherwise known as the Trans-Himalayan Highway, is beyond a doubt the most beautiful motorbike raid in India. Your target on this Leh Ladakh bike trip is Khardung La , one of the world’s highest motorable pass at 5,602 metres (18,379ft). This isn’t another one of those ordinary Himalayan motorcycle tours. No, you should prepare for an extreme expedition to the edge of beyond ! On this journey, while straddling your Royal Enfield motorbike, you will also straddle two worlds. The unforgettable pass of Rohtang La (with an elevation of 3900m/12,795ft) will bring you from the lush, vibrant, mainly Hindu valleys to the high desert plateaus where Tibetan Buddhist culture will envelop you. As you continue on your Leh Ladakh road trip, in this land of high altitude passes, you will cross bewitching lunar landscapes, while encountering few other people aside from nomadic goat and yak herders. This will be a physical challenge for adventurers seeking the ultimate of two-wheeled road trips, while joining the ranks of Himalayan motorbiking devotees.

Day 3 Manali

60 Km - 2h of riding

You will have an early morning arrival in Manali, but then you will have most of the day to explore or relax. Then, finally…you get to ride! We will get warmed up for this Leh Ladakh bike trip with a 60 kilometre ride through the Kullu Valley. This will include a visit to the Manali fort and temple, both of which were built in the 10th century! On our way back to town we will pass through several rustic villages, and have plenty of gorgeous views. Then it will be time for a good night’s rest back at your hotel. The Kullu Valley is rich with history, and was formerly known as “Kulanthapitha,” which translates to “the end of the livable world.” It was believed that deities lived amongst the mortals here, and it is renowned for its gardens, orchids, and natural beauty. Even the hashish grown here is famous. Today, the Kullu Valley is known as the “Land of the Gods,” as the valley is dotted with numerous temples.

Day 4 Manali - Jispa

190 km – 8h of riding

Today is the day we begin the greatest of Himalayan motorcycle tours! Yesterday was only a small taste of what is to come; today you will begin to experience the sensation of the twists and turns of the mountain roads in this beautiful landscape. We will begin the 170 kilometres journey as we ascend the Kullu Valley on endless switchbacks. Eventually we will reach Rohtang La, the mountain pass with an elevation of 3980 metres, where we leave the Indian subcontinent behind and enter the divine Buddhist world. From Rohtang La we will travel down a spectacular slope to Lahaul, a unique crossroads of Buddhism and Hinduism. Finally, we will cross the Pattan Valley before reaching the impressive Chandra Valley. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the Triloknath temples, before bedding down for the night at a guest house.

Day 5 Jispa – Sarchu

90 km – 6h of riding

This 90 kilometres of our Leh Ladakh bike trip will take us back to the main valley, and then north, to view some breathtaking gorges. We will visit several old monasteries, locally known as “Gompas”. Then we go on to discover barren, almost unpopulated, landscapes. Finally, the road leads upwards in the direction of the Baracha La pass (4890m), before entering a desolate valley. We’ll spend the night camping in the mountainous pastures of Sarchu.

Day 6 Sarchu – Rumtse

180 km – 7h of riding

This leg of your Leh Ladakh road trip will be one of the longest, covering 180 kilometres. You will go up into the mountains, gaining altitude as you approach Lachung La (elevation of 5065m) before plunging through deep and impressive gorges, and on into the desert of the Pang Moore Plains. We then head towards the Tanglang La pass (5330m), the world’s second highest motorable pass. We’ll come across a few villages as we approach the Indus valley, and then we quickly descend towards our day’s destination, Rumtse, the first Ladakhi village. We’ll spend another night camping, this time in the surroundings of the village, in a meadow surrounded by fields of barley.

Leh Ladakh bike trip

Jour 7 Rumtse – Leh

80 km – 3h of riding

Today will be a shorter journey, with more sightseeing opportunities. This stretch of our Leh Ladakh road trip winds along an impressive gorge before flowing into the Indus Valley. We will follow the Indus for about 50 kilometres and finally reach Leh, the capital of Ladakh. On the way, we will visit the famous Hemis monastery, which is the largest monastery of Ladakh, and Tiksi. It is built on top of a rocky peak overlooking the village. Finally, we’ll spend the afternoon in Leh, and lodge in a guest house for the evening. Dominated by the majestic royal palace, Leh was a rich commercial centre. Traders with their caravans from Tibet and central Asia stopped there, before continuing their journey to Kashmir. The bazaar in the old district is abuzz with beautiful women with rosy, high cheekbones dressed in black robes, tied at the waist with bright pastel belts, old gentry with wrinkled skin like withered apples, lovely children, farmers from the Nubra valley, Tibetan and Kashmiri traders, and even monks from Zanskar. It truly is a lively and colourful world.

Day 8 Leh - Khardung Lah

80 km – 4h30 of riding

Another short ride awaits us today, but it will not be easy, nor quick! We will ascend to the Khardung La pass on another labyrinthine route. The Khardung La is the highest motorable pass of the world at 5600 metres! From here, the panorama of the Zanskar range to the south, and the great Karakoram range to the north, is absolutely magical. Then we’ll retrace our routes to go back to Leh. The day is not over yet though, we’ll embark on a journey for the true and adventurous rider; the incomparable visit to Stock village, which is located on the other side of the Indus, at the bottom of the Stock Kangri at a height of more than 6000 metres! After the day’s journey, we’ll spend the night in a guest house.

motorrad tour himalaya

Day 9 Leh - Tso Moriri Lake

210 km – 8h of riding

Today will tie for the longest distance of this Leh Ladakh road trip. We begin with a ride up the Indus valley towards the Tibetan border. After Upshi, we continue along the Indus to the bridge of Mahe, often crossing gorges along the way. For lunch, we’ll enjoy a picnic on the white sand “beaches” of the Indus bank. We then leave the valley to enter the heart of Rupshu, the most isolated part of Ladakh. Taking a sandy track, we reach the famous Tso Moriri Lake, gleaming in its turquoise glory. After making this 210 kilometre trek, we’ll spend the night camping on the shores of the sacred lake. The Indian half of the huge Tibetan plateau that extends from east to west over more than 2000 kilometres is known as Rupshu (or Changtang). The average altitude of the Rupshu is 4500 metres, too high for regular life. Only nomads live here, with their yaks and goats.

Day 10 Tso Moriri Lake - Tso Kar Lake

100 km – 4h of riding

This leg of the Leh Ladakh bike trip covers 100 kilometres and includes more sightseeing, as well as some immersion into the life of the Champa nomads. Along our ride, we will make a visit to Korzok village, one of the rare settlements of Rupshu, and its small monastery. Then you can enjoy a ride or walk along the lake. Next, we’ll make our departure in the direction of Tso Kar on a sandy and rocky track. The Tso Kar is a salt water lake surrounded by unbelievable lunar scenery. We’ll spend another night camping, this time next to the Thukje village. The Champas (nomads) live under their waterproof black tents made of yak wool. They live on their yaks, goats and sheep and mostly earn their living by selling their wool. They go down to the valleys to trade for cereals, materials, spices, sugar. In exchange, they bring back salt, butter, cheese, meat, and other daily necessities. They raise sheep, and the world famous wool from their goats, which is known as pashmina. The wool is then brought down to the Kashmir valley, where it is woven, and then sold all across the world.

motorrad tour himalaya

Day 11 Lac Tso Kar – Jispa

Another long ride of 210 kilometres will take us back towards Jispa. We begin this part of our Leh Ladakh road trip with a rugged, but safe, track to reach the Leh-Manali road, next to Pang. We then head southward until Sarchu, where we will break for lunch. During the afternoon, we will drive down to Drache or even Jispa, before overnighting in a simple Guest House. While it may be simple, it still resides at 3500m altitude, where a hard bed and a shower are items of luxury! This region is the refuge for many animal species that we can see while trekking: wild hares, marmots with thick fur, white partridges, ibex, wild donkeys from Tibet (known as Kyangs), wolves, and if we are lucky, some very rare snow leopards.

motorrad tour himalaya

Day 12 Jispa – Naggar

By now, you realize this Leh Ladakh bike trip is the greatest of Himalayan motorcycle tours. So, savor the last 170 kilometres of the trip as we make our way back to Manali. We’ll make an early departure southward to Manali before spending the night at the hotel. Your road today will be easier, so take the opportunity to enjoy a little more speed, each curve, and each new landscape. These final mountain roads will offer you some of the best moments on your motorcycle !

Day 13 Naggar – Delhi

You will have the opportunity to spend this day exploring Manali. In the evening, you’ll catch a comfortable overnight bus back to Delhi.

Day 14 Delhi

Today begins with an early morning arrival in Delhi. You’ll then be transferred to the hotel. Feel free to spend the rest of the day exploring Delhi. Delhi is the capital of India. It was founded on the site of seven historical cities, and is now composed of the old town and the new – two halves of an exciting and chaotic unit. The fortified citadel and the Red Fort remind one of the strength and elegance of the great Mughal Empire. The lively Chandni Chowk, known for its dealers in gold and silver, the Jama Masjid mosque, the largest in India, and the Raj Ghat, where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated, are truly captivating. New Delhi is a vibrant city, with multi-storied buildings, boulevards, fountains and large parks. You can visit the minaret of Qutub Minar, the mausoleum of Humayun, and Connaught Place, where the mix of vendors, displays of silk, cinemas, and restaurants perfectly reflects the essence of the national capital.

Day 15 Delhi

Today is another free day in Delhi, and your hotel room is yours until 10 am. At this point, we’ll unfortunately have to say goodbye, but not before transferring you to the airport, on schedule with your flight departure time.

When touring in the Himalayas at the right time of the year – July & August – you can expect mostly blue skies although it can be cold at night due to altitude. When the sun is out, it is hot and you can get sunburnt easily.

Beside protective clothing such as pants, boots and jackets for when riding, in general you can wear shorts and light t-shirts. It is also recommended to bring a sweater or two, alongside with some long pants for when staying at higher altitude. Waterproof jacket is also recommended as some days might be rainy.

We ride 12 days out of 16. On day 1 we meet and next day we take a domestic flight to Narkanda. After being transported to our bikes in a van we will start riding. We will have a rest day in Leh on the 11th day and day 14 will be our last riding day. On the 15th day we will fly back to Delhi and the next day the tour will end.

As we always say, we are not doctors so we strongly recommend that you consult your physician of trust and ensure that you are physically fit for such an experience. Said so, the expedition starts at lower altitudes and gradually takes us high up to 5000+ mt to help acclimatize. The main player inducing altitude sickness is the lack of oxygen, for this reason we also carry portable oxygen cylinders in the support vehicle for any eventuality.

The minimum number of riders required for tours in India is 8. The maximum number of riders per group is 10.

Partners, family members or friends of riders can also join and travel in the support vehicle at Pillion price.

Himalayan Motorcycle Tours

This is a non-profit initiative because we only charge the cost incurred in managing the arrangement with some nominal profit added to it which goes to the education of the poor kids and to an old age home in spiti valley.

We do not do it to earn something from this, because this is not our business. We just do it for our passion to ride and to make others see this exceptional place and these rides help to change the lives of the kids with education and provide ration kits and essential items to the elderly vulnerables in the remote himalayas. We can’t change the whole world but we can certainly make some lives better.

The famous Tiger Leaping Gorge is just one of the highlights en route to the land of “sacredness and peace’; Shangri La. Named after the fictional place of eternal peace and tranquillity. described in the novel “Lost Horizon” by British author James Hilton.

The Yila Grasslands of Napa Lake will pass by as we climb higher toward the Meili Snow Mountains and the air becomes thinner. Tibet is next on our agenda as we head west toward the Tibetan Alps and Rawok Lake, surrounded by magnificent snow-capped mountains and forests.  The eastern Himalayans are in our sights, ancient temples, palaces and spectacular natural landscapes are ahead of us.

At almost 5000 metres above sea level the Rongbuk Monastery will take your breath away in the shadow of Mount Everest!  The adventure is far from over with a visit to the Namtso Lake. At over 4700 metres above sea level, this stunning sacred lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. As well as the locals in their colourful traditional dress, keep an eye out for wild yak roaming nearby.

Our destination is Lhasa, ‘Place of the Gods’.  Centre of the Tibetan Buddhist world for over a millennium, your first view of the red-and-white Potala Palace soaring above the Holy City will amaze you. We will have two full days to rest and to explore this magnificent city and the winter palace of the Dalai Lama.

Tag 4: Alchi -Kargil via Fotu La Pass

motorrad tour himalaya

Tag 14: Dalhousie – Dharamshala – McLeod Ganj

Tag 15: Dharamshala – McLoed Ganj

Die besten Strassenkarten bekommt man vom „Reise Know How“ oder „Nelles“ Verlag.

In Indien gilt Linksverkehr.

Compensation for any damage/accident done by you during an expedition to another property/person would be directly payable to you.

The advisable maximum size of baggage should not exceed 60 litres. Remember that you have to carry the luggage to the backup vehicle and into the accommodation

Avoid High-Altitude Sickness

To avoid high-altitude sickness, here are a few steps you can take to prepare and mitigate the risks:

1. Stay Hydrated : Drink water in small sips every 10 minutes. Carrying a hydration bag can make it easier to stay hydrated without having to stop frequently. Hydration helps your body adjust to the altitude more efficiently.

2. Consider Medication : Diamox is a medication that can help prevent altitude sickness. However, it’s important to consult with your doctor before your trip, especially if you have any allergies or medical conditions. Your doctor can advise on the appropriate dosage and whether it’s safe for you to take.

3. Eat a High Potassium Diet: Foods high in potassium, such as bananas, avocados, and potatoes, can help your body adjust to high altitudes. A diet rich in these foods before and during your trip can be beneficial.

4. Oxygen Support : We carry oxygen cylinders for emergency use. Our guide is trained to recognize the symptoms of oxygen deprivation and will provide oxygen from a 10-15 litre big cylinder or a 2-litre portable cylinder if required. It’s critical to listen to your guide and communicate any discomfort you may be experiencing.

5. Stay Positive and Don’t Panic : A good mindset is crucial when dealing with high altitudes. Being aware that you’re in a high-altitude area with less oxygen is important, but it’s equally important not to panic. Stay positive and trust in your preparation and resources. Your guide will instruct you on what to do and how to handle different sections of your journey effectively. Listening to your guide and maintaining a positive outlook can significantly improve your ability to adapt and enjoy your high-altitude adventure.

6. Expedition Program Plan: The expedition program has been customized in such a way that we will gradually ascend from lower altitudes to higher altitudes day by day. This approach helps in acclimatizing to the changing oxygen levels and reducing the risk of high-altitude sickness. Gradual ascent allows your body time to adjust to the altitude changes, making the journey safer and more enjoyable. This methodical increase in altitude is designed to enhance your body’s adaptation process, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable experience as you reach higher elevations.

Remember, preparation and acclimatization are key. Allow your body time to adjust to the altitude by taking it easy the first few days and being mindful of your physical condition.
